The King 2 Hearts: Episode 12

There’s nothing better than a show that can pack an hour full of heart-stopping action, fairytale romance, and gut-busting humor. Our hero gets into trouble, but you know what that means – time for the heroine to swoop in and save the day. ‘Ssup.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Hang-ah’s father races into the prime minister’s office with the news – General ShortFuse has gone off the reservation and Jae-ha is in danger. Nooo! This is why we need a batphone!

Sure enough, the general’s troops march right up to Jae-ha to announce that they will be taking over his security detail from now on. Shi-kyung steps forward to tell them that he’s the only one who gets to put his hands on the king. Okay, he doesn’t say that, but he does step forward like a big ol’ hero to say that’s his job.

Soldiers on both sides tense up and reach for their guns. Shi-kyung is in full-on Doberman mode. Jae-ha comes forward and asks for their rank, and dismisses them with a laugh. I don’t think that was such a good idea.

The prime minister reacts skeptically to the news, even though it’s happening right now. He says that the general was just blowing off steam, but he wouldn’t do something so crazy as to kidnap the South Korean king… and then names the location where he’s going to be kidnapped. Er…

Hang-ah’s father looks up. He never said where…

Augh, the friggin’ prime minister’s in on it too? Is there anyone we can trust? At least he’s not so much IN on the plan, as he’s letting the plan happen so he can catch General Shouty and get rid of him for good.

But Hang-ah’s father reminds him that it’s the KING they’re talking about. Forget kidnapping – it’d be war if he got a splinter under his nail. Hee. I do enjoy prissy king jokes, despite the gravity of the situation.

He reminds the prime minister that war is the only way this scenario ends, which means a leveled peninsula, both North and South. That finally gets through to the man, and they send troops to arrest the general and his men, but they’re already in the wind. In fact it just makes the baddies move their timetable up.

Dad comically pretends to be talking about something else when Hang-ah bursts into his office during a frantic phone call. He’s turned the base upside-down looking for the general, which she tells him, and he’s like, how’d you know? Ha.

She tells him that Jae-ha has to be sent back home immediately, and Dad says he’s already on it—he’ll be sent back first thing tomorrow, because he’s got a few more stops on his cultural itinerary that can’t be undone.

Hang-ah freaks out, as do I. This is not a leisurely I’ll-take-in-the-sights-and-then-run-away-from-my-kidnappers-later kind of scenario here. But Dad in turn freaks out over her caring about a man who has nothing to do with her anymore. He swears he’s got it under control, and puts her under house arrest for good measure.

Jae-ha heads to an amusement park next, and Shi-kyung worries about the openness of the landscape. Won’t it be hard to secure the area? LISTEN to your head of security please. But their guide assures them it’ll be fine.

Hang-ah worries about the same thing when she hears about Jae-ha’s next stop from the two soldiers guarding her at home. They tell her to forget that jerk already, and ask if they can peek at the present he brought.

She tells them they can have it all and goes to her room, to stare herself down in the mirror and say over and over that Jae-ha is no longer any of her concern.

Dad decides to oversee Jae-ha’s amusement park visit personally, and watches as he rides the Viking. At first it’s dead silent, with citizens on one side and Jae-ha and his security team on the other, so finally Jae-ha nudges Shi-kyung and raises his arms up for a Whoooo~!

No one else follows along, so he has to force Shi-kyung, who does the most awkward and self-conscious Whooooo~. He finally gets everyone to join in, and they have a great time for the cameras, broadcasting live on the internet.

He even stops to wink into the camera at Secretary Eun, who watches from the palace. Keh. Everything is business as usual down at the park, but from the top of a hill, the baddies put their plan into motion and take over a security room.

Hang-ah cleans her room, which serves as a distraction for about five minutes. She comes out to ask about lunch, and the soldiers say they found a box underneath the other stuff in Jae-ha’s present.

They hand her the gift-within-a-gift, a box marked with the royal seal and a note: Handmade by Lee Jae-ha. Flashback to Jae-ha researching the best thing to make for her skin, and slaving away over his chemistry set like a big ol’ nerd. So. Cute.

She braces herself and then opens the box. There’s a note inside: “An unfamiliar marriage, an awful man, a miscarriage… For Kim Hang-ah, who had a really hard time: Natural 3-step Skincare Project.”

That’s adorable. It comes with detailed instructions on how to use everything, and then she takes out the first bottle. It’s called: “I’m sorry.” The second: “Thank you.” Omg so sweet.

Cut back to Chemistry Set Jae-ha, getting frustrated halfway through. He wonders if he has to work this hard, and then takes out his phone to look at a picture of Hang-ah dressed as his princess bride.

He sighs, “Of course you do, you jerk.” HA. He says to the picture, “I love you.”

And then Hang-ah takes out the last bottle. The third label: “I love you.” Awwww. She looks down at the gift, overcome with emotion.

She peeks outside at her sentries and asks for lunch again, and they rush to her side. Cut to: Hang-ah holding both agents by the throat, one with her hand, and one with her foot, while her free hand waves around a gun. Hahahaha.

She tells them she’ll be going out now, and then changes into her military uniform. It’s totally her superhero cape moment. She makes a call on her way out, to ask someone if they’re up for some training. Please be your WOC team. I want that reunion so badly.

Jae-ha gets led to a carousel, and he eyes the ride like, you want me to get on this? They swear it’s the last one, so he sighs and turns to Shi-kyung, who decides that it’s probably safe enough for him to ride alone. Ha. Is riding little horsies too emasculating for the super agent?

Jae-ha walks off sighing, “Stresssss.” The park’s mascot, Tom (of Tom and Jerry) follows him onto the ride along with a few civilians, and is anyone else suspicious of that overly cheery cat?

He goes ’round and ’round and everything seems fine, until suddenly the lights cut out. Bong-gu watches the live feed online, screaming, “Showtime!”

Suddenly the civilians aren’t civilians anymore—they take out guns and train them at Jae-ha’s head. Tom takes off his cat head, and of course it’s the agent he laughed at earlier that day.

Tom leads Jae-ha around the carousel, and Shi-kyung spots them. Guns come flying out from every direction, but so do Tom’s agents, who surround the secret service. Crap crap crap.

But then as if things weren’t bad enough, the baddies all rip open their jackets to reveal bombs strapped to their chests. Oh. Shit. Tom says go ahead and shoot, and he demonstrates by shooting one of his own men. He promptly explodes.

He announces that every bomb is wired to go off if the guy wearing it dies, and takes out a big trigger button as he orders everyone to drop their weapons and step back. They do as they’re told, with no other choice.

And then he reads a prepared speech for the camera, basically an angry attack at Jae-ha for using Hang-ah and stepping on North Korea’s pride. Oh, so this is you defending her honor? How helpful, but I think she’s got it under control there, cat.

Bong-gu has a direct connection to Tom via earpiece, and he actually directs him mid-speech to ask that the camera show Jae-ha’s terrified face. Dude, you are obsessed. He interrupts Tom’s speech to cut to the chase—his message to Jae-ha.

Tom hands Jae-ha the pre-recorded message from Bong-gu, claiming responsibility. Bong-gu watches eagerly, “That’s him, watching it right now, right?” He practically drools.

Hang-ah arrives just outside the park, running as she radios her backup. It’s Kang-seok! Whoooooo! And… whoa, is that a rocket launcher on your back, or are you just happy to see me?

And then! Young-bae sets up his sniper rifle from the top of the ferris wheel. NICE. The band is back together! Hang-ah looks down from the hill and her eyes widen at the sight below.

Jae-ha watches all of Bong-gu’s recording, barely holding back his terror. Please, don’t give him the satisfaction. He chucks the tablet on the ground in annoyance, “What’s he saying?” HA. I love that he’s smarter than the evil mastermind!

He looks Tom up and down, “Is Kim Bong-gu talking to you in that earpiece?” He turns to the camera, “He’s watching right?” Tom panics and takes out a gun from his cat belly. Jae-ha’s like, how much stuff do you have in there? Hee.

Jae-ha turns to the camera to give the best comeback ever: “Ya, Kim Bong-gu. If you’re going to work out your inferiority complex, do it right. What is this? Are you advertising to the entire world what a laughable ass you are? You can’t even show yourself so you send a video letter? What is this, Section TV? Are you shooting We Got Married? I. Don’t. Love you. So please stop, and go exercise. It’s really the best thing for a complex. Or go read a book. Work on cultivating your inner self. You overly self-conscious inferiority-complex-riddled ass!”

So. Satisfying. Bong-gu FLIPS out. “Kill him. KIIIIIIIIILL HIIIIIIIIIIIIIM! Detonate now!”

Boom! There’s an explosion, but it’s not the baddies. It’s Kang-seok, who busts through a wall to overtake the security station. He gets the lights on and the carousel moving again. It’s enough to throw the baddies into confusion, as they scramble to regain control.

And that’s when Sniper Young-bae fires at Tom’s trigger arm, and then takes out the surrounding gunmen, one by one. Yessss! Shi-kyung scrambles for a gun. But Hang-ah is faster, and she jumps onto the roof of the carousel, ready to make her move.

The cameras catch her, and everyone, including Mom and Secretary Eun, sees her. Kang-seok throws smoke grenades onto the carousel to give her cover, and she swoops in with one flying kick after another, to take out all of the gunmen singlehandedly.

Tom scrambles for the remote trigger and reaches out… and Hang-ah stomps on his hand and kicks the trigger away. She whips out her gun and sticks the barrel in his mouth. Dayum. Shi-kyung and the rest of the agents fight their way up and secure the bomber from her grasp.

Jae-ha watches as she turns and walks right off the carousel and into the night, like a superhero who’s done her work and doesn’t look back. It’s even got the dramatic smoke and everything. So badass.

She goes straight to her car to drive away, when a car pulls up in her path. Jae-ha gets out and stands in the road. She puts the car in park and then guns the accelerator, staring right at him. Ha. Nice way to let out some anger.

She shifts into drive and drives head on, but he doesn’t move or flinch. I love it. It’s his way of saying I’m not going anywhere. She stops a few feet short of turning him into a pancake and gets out of the car with a peeved look.

He asks, “Do you like me, or do you like Eun Shi-kyung?” She scowls, “I don’t know about that, but I do have someone I hate.”

Jae-ha: “Lee Jae-ha?” He reminds her of his famous vengeful streak. “I’m going to get revenge for those words.” She turns away, still fuming.

He takes a step closer. “Every morning, I’m going to kiss you. For revenge.” Hahaha.

“I’m going to follow you around all the time like a stalker, and buy you everything you want. I’ll never cheat. I will only look at you. From now on, I’ll never let you cry even one tear.” Which is of course exactly when she starts to cry. Aw.

He walks closer and wipes the tears from her eyes. “I’m going to make you the happiest queen in the world. And until the day I die, I will nauseatingly like only you. For revenge.” So adorable, the true-to-character, sweet-with-a-kick proposal.

And then, he gets down on one knee, and takes her hand in his. “Can you handle it, your highness?” She just looks down at him, crying more tears. He smiles, “Hey I’m officially proposing to you right now.”

She finally opens her mouth… to mutter that South Korean playboys are always smooth-talking with their stupid words, as she sniffles back tears. Hee.

He gets up and hugs her tight, as the cherry blossoms fall.

Now it’s time to deal with the baddies, starting with General Regrets-a-Lot, who demands payment from Club M because he held up his part of the bargain. Sort of. They don’t quite agree, and send his location to Hang-ah’s father, who doesn’t receive the help kindly, but does arrest the man with pleasure.

And then Bong-gu takes out his frustrations on his right-hand man, because… um… he can? What’s an impotent rage if you can’t share it with those closest to you?

Back home, news of the incident gets reported as “WOC members” saving the day, and Dong-ha sighs at the lack of naming names. Seriously, you save the day, and you don’t even get a mention on the news.

Secretary Eun releases an official statement on the question of Kim Bong-gu, as in who the hell is he, and he deflects to say that he’s nobody important, and that it’s a nickname the king invented to represent those who oppose reunification. Pffft. He apologizes to all the Kim Bong-gus of the world for misusing their name. Ha.

He calls Jae-ha to say that he got the press off that scent for now, and Jae-ha asks if anyone’s found the recording (of Bong-gu claiming responsibility) yet. They haven’t, but Secretary Eun reminds him that he doesn’t have the power to do anything with that evidence anyway.

He says that most big players already know that Kim Bong-gu is John Meyer, but they can’t do anything about it because it would mean war for their country. Jae-ha asks how long they’re just supposed to stand by, while he kills hyung, goes after Jae-shin, and now him. Secretary Eun calls him out, saying truth be told, Jae-ha is scared too—that’s why he hasn’t acted yet, why he hasn’t come forward about Bong-gu’s identity. URG. I hate you, old man!

Shi-kyung interrupts him to say it’s time to go home. Jae-ha walks down the train platform where the prime minister apologizes again for what happened while he was here. Jae-ha asks if he knows who Kim Bong-gu is.

He can tell by the look on his face that he does. “Let’s grow strong together.” Nice. He reaches out his hand, and the prime minister shakes it. Hey, enemy of my enemy can be an ally when it counts.

Hang-ah calls her father to say that she’s going now. He pouts that he doesn’t care, whatever, she’s just going to do what she wants anyway. Aw. Jae-ha boards the train car and snatches the phone from her.

He calls him “Father,” and promises to visit with Hang-ah after chuseok. Dad says he can’t handle the stress from his visits, given the international terrorist fiascos and whatnot, but Jae-ha insists they’ll be there, and leaves Dad smiling. Yay.

He asks why the long face, and she says that South Korea still scares her, and she’s worried about how she’ll be received. He takes her hand reassuringly.

They arrive at the palace and Mom and Secretary Eun are waiting in her room. Mom runs up and takes Hang-ah’s face in her hands, and tells her how sorry and grateful she is. Hang-ah says she should bow properly, and Mom says no, she should be the one bowing to Hang-ah, for saving her son’s life.

She leads her inside to her room filled with presents sent from well-wishers, from food to seaweed to bears and other gifts. She opens up a few, overwhelmed by the gestures, and then finds a note in one, written in blood? Creepy red ink? “Kim Hang-ah Die.”

HAHAHAHAHA. This show, it kills me. What a way to cut the saccharine. Mom quickly snatches that one out of her hands, but Hang-ah’s so happy she doesn’t even register it.

Jae-ha smiles, pleased at her warm reception, and Secretary Eun follows him out to say that that’s not really a lot of presents, and technically, fifty percent of the public still opposes the union. Jae-ha groans, “Ajusshi! Do you have to say things like that right now? We just got here!”

Secretary Eun just doesn’t want him floating around with his head in the clouds (or he delights in being a killjoy because he’s eeeeevil, take your pick) and Jae-ha assures him that he won’t, saying that Daddy Eun is just as un-fun as Shi-kyung.

“I know it’s just the beginning. I’m going to raise it—that power you talked about.” Secretary Eun smiles proudly despite himself. I do think that he believes he’s justified in everything he’s doing for the good of the monarchy. It’s just… you know what they say about the road to hell.

Shi-kyung goes right back to work like the toy solider that he is, gathering more intel on Club M. I don’t know why he has to be told this by someone else, but the princess is the one who holds the key to identifying her brother’s killer.

He goes to check on Jae-shin and finds her playing cards with her staff. She’s happy to see him and asks him to join the game, but he’s so wired from worrying about her that he ends up asking gruffly if this is all she’s been doing while he was gone, instead of trying to recover her memories.

She gets defensive and asks why he’s attacking her when he of all people knows what she’s going through. Shi-kyung: “So do you want my pity?” Ouch. She looks up at him with a stricken look, saying that she can’t force herself to remember.

But he challenges her, “Or is it that you don’t want to remember?” He calls her out for clinging to it as a weakness, to get more sympathy, to be treated with kid gloves by everyone around her.

He tells her that she has to face it, and even if the memories don’t come back, if she doesn’t deal with it, she’s just going to get worse and worse. “Please come back, Princess. Be bold, like you were before.”

But this is a tough love speech she’s not ready to hear, and she cuts him off to call and ask that Shi-kyung be replaced by another agent from now on. Nooo. She calls him a frustrating ass.

It stuns him so much that he stands through an entire meeting with Jae-ha lost in thought. He remembers every time Jae-shin called him frustrating in cute ways, culminating in the last one, meant to be an insult.

Jae-ha snaps him back to reality, and Shi-kyung asks, “Am I really that frustrating?” Aw, but you’re also adorably earnest! Jae-ha isn’t one to mince words, and confirms it, and Shi-kyung just sighs, resigned to his fate as a funless bot. Maybe we could install some party programs in your CPU.

Jae-ha then goes to Hang-ah, to fill her in on Kim Bong-gu, Club M, and everything that’s been going on. See, THIS is what I’ve been waiting for. The romantic declarations are all swoonworthy, but I love that he treats her as an equal, and goes to her for advice and support. It’s real, and lovely.

He tells her everything about Bong-gu—that he’s just one man, but more than just a man. He has endless money, with which he’s bought up everything. His modus operandi: “That power is justice.” Might is right? Yeah, that about sums it up. Evil bastards.

He says the whole world wants to see North and South tear each other apart. He spins the little globe on the table with a sigh, “There’s so much to do, but we’re so small.” Man, you can just see it on her face, like she’s watching him grow up in front of her.

He asks if she thinks they can do it—the WOC, getting married. She’s struck by his sincerity and his very kingly concerns, which is a side of him she’s never really seen before.

Suddenly she’s like waitaminute, “What’re you saying, that you’re NOT going to marry me?” Ha. He’s like, I am, I am, but she bolts up, “So if it gets difficult, are you just going to send me back? You know that’ll be the THIRD TIME!”

She rants, calling him a rat bastard, and he takes her hands, repeating that they will, he swears, what about now, next month? Hee. But she pulls her hands away and tells him to stomp out Bong-gu first: “If you can’t handle him, you’re not even a MAN. Why would I marry a guy like that?”

Oh nice. She’s totally turning it into a challenge for him. It’s brilliant. He has something to fight for, and gets a boost of confidence without being patronized. Plus it has the added benefit of leaving him all flustered. She says she’ll reject him if he doesn’t succeed, and he calls out after her, “I’ll do well!”

She storms into her room and calls Daddy, asking how long he’s known about Bong-gu. He whines at being woken up in the middle of the night and wonders how she knows, and she shouts into the phone that Comrade Jae-ha, a guy who laughs when people threaten him with bombs, is quaking in his boots.

“I’m not going to leave him be—the bastard who made my man this way!” She’s so cute. She starts yelling about how she’s going to slit his throat, and Dad tells her he’s already on it, with the research.

But research isn’t gonna cut it for Action Girl, and she basically orders Dad to find out where Bong-gu lives, lying that Jae-ha needs it for his plan. Thank you! Someone else who thinks just bombing the hell out of his fancy house should do the trick. I know, it’s probably not going to work, but I need someone to TRY.

Meanwhile, Jae-ha and Shi-kyung are off chasing another lead on Bong-gu—a girl at a club who sees him on a regular basis. They track her down, and Jae-ha goes in for the big seduction…

But he spins back on his heels to remind Shi-kyung that this is all in the name of The Plan. “The person I love is our Hang-ah. There is only Hang-ah… Just in case she says something, you have to be my witness!” Pfffft. Shi-kyung smiles and nods. I don’t know how he’s not busting a gut right now.

Annnnd, I was already laughing, but then you got a full shot with your shiny shoes, and now I’m on the floor.

Mission: Seduce-the-girlfriend-but-only-in-the-name-of-the-plan-if-Hang-ah-asks is a go.

Sometime later Bong-gu receives a care package in the mail, sent to his home address. It’s got a royal seal on it. He opens the letter from Jae-ha that says he sent a present, but not to bother opening it.

It requires a password, and Jae-ha wouldn’t want him to suffer trying to figure it out. He does give a hint though: “It’s something I have, that you don’t.” Taunting the villain never gets old. He closes the letter with, “But don’t open it. You’ll regret it.”

So of course he sits down with it right away. He’s so hooked. Also, I love the password game! Among the things he tries: royal seal, good looks (deciding that’s not true after all, ha), honor, youth, manners, a conscience.

Jae-ha tells Secretary Eun about the plan and says that now is the time to strike, and he’s going to do it together with Hang-ah. He asks for ajusshi’s help.

Bong-gu goes crazy (er, crazier) trying to open the box, and flings it at his minion to take an axe to it. Only of course it’s wired to explode if it’s tampered with. Have you never seen a spy movie? He refuses to let it be taken away.

The royal couple heads out to Hang-ah’s first public appearance since the hearings. Jae-ha asks if she’s ready, and she nods. He holds her hand one last time in the car, and then leads her up the red carpet hand-in-hand.

Bong-gu ponders the password, and then it hits him. He gets up with a start and whispers into the box, “People.”

It opens.

Jae-ha and Hang-ah reach the top of the steps, and then face each other for one last us-against-the-world look. Then they turn to face the cameras.

COMMENTS

WHAT’S IN THE BOX? Okay, sorry I had to get that Seven quote out of my system. I love the games Jae-ha plays with Bong-gu, knowing that curiosity will get the better of the maniacal bastard. So far he’s played every exchange with him perfectly—that carousel speech was such sweet vengeance, not to mention crazy brave, given the circumstances. And even in setting the password to “People,” it says so much about what Jae-ha understands about his adversary.

Sure, he has more money, more power than Jae-ha has. But the king has his people—from the woman he loves and his action wingman, to every last citizen in his kingdom, something that Bong-gu will never have. More than anything, I love that he’s come to acknowledge that a king can be more than a puppet, and that maybe he finally gets what hyung always said about the king belonging to the people—the crown is theirs, and it represents them. Though he might not have money or power, he has the might of the people, and perhaps he’ll find that when moved, they are a greater power than money can ever buy.

It was so satisfying to see Hang-ah and Jae-ha each be badass in their own ways when faced with danger. How much do I love that he’s the brains and she’s the brawn? I mean, REALLY. It doesn’t get any better than that. I wish we could’ve gotten an actual reunion scene with the WOC team post-rescue—they saved his life for crying out loud. But I’m going to tell myself that there were hugs and drinks and SNSD jokes offscreen somewhere.

The proposal was adorable, of course, but what’s great about this couple is that their everyday interactions are just as full of bickering cuteness as the big romantic moments are, so it’s not a departure from the norm. And I love that they’ve finally moved past fighting each other, so that they can fight the world together, hand in hand.

This episode is total DAEBAK for me. It has everything I want, action, romance, humor, etc etc XD Been watching a lot of the scenes over and over again and I just can't get enough of them~~~
The Hangah-to-the-rescue scene (GOSH how can a woman be so cool, when she jumped on top of that carousel I think my heart just stopped from that moment onwards, all those ninja-esque ass-kicking, swooping and backflipping~~!! and then that walkoff after saving the day without even taking a glance at our King~~ LOVE IT! although Hang-ah can't immediately forgive him but her coming to save him shows how much she still loves him awwww action speaks louder than words!) and the proposal scene (why so beautiful, show~~), definitely my two top fav scenes in this episode.
Oh!! and the Bong Gu password-breaking scene was so funny haha, Jae-ha making him do what he did a few episodes ago with his brother's diary hahaha

I could rewatch this episode again and again! My fav part was when he talked about loving her as revenge, which to me was a reference to his threat the first time she refused his proposal when he said he would marry her and then once died, reveal that he never actually loved her :P

However it's hard to pick a favorite when there are so many epic moments!

Thanks for the recap!

I just loved JH's character! Though he was badly affected by his mistake of sending HA away followed by her miscarriage and probably feeling a little defeated when told by HA to return to the South, he didn't stay down for long.

He was still his fun self when getting everyone to cheer on the Viking ride and he could even wink at Sec Eun. LOL That got my laughing!

I thought the scene of him looking at HA fight the baddies was him not only in awe of her but also, damn...she still loves me! That's why he was so confident at the proposal scene. He KNEW she was HIS!

Haizz...can't get over that scene. I'm been smiling like an idiot the whole day just thinking about this ep....

Who wouldn't be deliriously happy to discover Ha Jiwon loves them?!

and did I say best episode ever?! i could watch this for the nth time and not get tired with it. cinematically, i love the proposal scene. so beautiful! but my favorite scene is when Hang Ah was kicking the baddies' butt. ah. satisfying.

Dear girlfriday,

Thank you so much for the recap.

I love this scene as well: Hang Ah just dusted herself off and walked into the night...While Jae Ha watched in awe the whole time, the woman he loves and adores, disappearing in the mist! Gosh, this is probably more romantic than the proposal itself because it is so organic, so un-drama like (if you know what I mean)!

Also when she gunned the engine as if she wanted to crush Jae Ha! Really! It's only those who have LOVED would understand the feeling. You really wanted to, just wanted to, tear the person apart, the one you loved so much. And Jae Ha just stood there and took it. OMG. These two.

Her walking into the night was one of the best parts in the episodes.
It was the cherry on top to her kickass save being heroine.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah. Totally. I'm such a sucker for that spare kind of ass-kickery. I love that she wasn't doing it to be a hero, or to reconcile with JH (though it had that effect), but because she had to. And you could tell when she walked away that she was almost frustrated with herself for having to save him.

Frustrating is the right word! On how complete stupid jerk he is and how much she hates herself for loving him,

I don't get why the korean characters speak korean to the americans characters and then they speak back in english.

0
9
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's partly for the sake of the Korean watchers cause watching subtitles sometimes ain't easy especially for older folks, and secondly the actors/actresses will have a hard time speaking their non native language.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

i actually like that -- how bong gu talks to his right hand man in korean and he's suppose to totally get him and talks back to him in english.
quite interesting.
but yes, as topper says, it's for the sake of the viewers. guess they dont really like the subtitles but hey, we're stuck with it.
No english dubs anytime soon, and i'm glad for it. LOL loss of emotion no offence, whenever we talk. :P

0
7

Required fields are marked *

Also the actor who plays Bong Gu sucks at English and was burdened at the possibility of having to speak it, so the writers cut down his Eng lines as well. I love it too...its different and interesting but still comes off naturally.

I so wished he would be killed off you know, dunno why but he irritates me so much than that creepy gollum did(couple of episodes before that is, now when ts btw JH and him, I totally love it)

0

Required fields are marked *

I always thought it was strange.

I'd imagine those lackeys whom Bonggu probably pays $$$$$ to would speak to their boss in Korean.

But it doesn't affect me so much watching the drama. I actually feel kind of sorry for his right hand man the past few episodes. It's like being a nursemaid to a lunatic half the time.

I wouldn't be surprised if the henchman betrays Bong-gu in the end.

0

I have to admit, I haven't noticed how strange this is, possibly because this is how I've grown up speaking to my parents and siblings- but now that you mention it I guess it could be jarring to watch.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

We're a multilingual family....so, I've never thought about the fact that people find it a bit disconcerting. I converse with my parents either in my native language, English, or a combo of both wherein I follow the English lang. syntax. And, my parents reply in either language.

I think it's better that they don't have the actor playing BG struggling to speak in English....not only would it be kinda cringe-worthy but also it wouldn't lend the same effect that the character has when he's confident and at his best which happens to be when he speaks Korean.

0

I kinda like this it though, how he speaks Korean (even though he can speak English, as per early episode) and everyone around him supposedly understands although they all reply in English. I thought it further emphasizes Bong Gu's megalomania. He believes he's the center of the universe, and therefore everyone around him is expected to understand what he's saying in any language he cares to express himself in. I think its entirely in character for the craziness that is Bong Gu.

“The absence of a kiss made it more heartfelt”

So right. I know some people wanted a kiss but I felt it would've been somewhat inappropriate.

It's a running habit of Hang Ah's that when she's angry at Jae Ha, she doesn't like him to touch her. When he calls her poor while she's in her Princess-wear, she tosses away his hand. When he tries to hold her hand after her speech about the miscarriage, she throws him off again.

Even though he did that whole romantic scene, he still has to be careful how he touches her when she's upset. A hug had just the right amount of intimacy for his apology but didn't overstep his bounds during a frankly tenuous moment in their relationship.

man, that whole proposal scene was like.. sigh.hey, here we go again. i'm gong to cry... and i was gong to force myself to watch it because i'm sorry most proposal scenes can be just too cheesy and this drama wasn't that but instead it left me smiling and satisfied. not wanting anything more or anything less.

we've already said and heard (wrote and read - more appropriately) our kudos and congratulations for the AHhA couple for their great job in this series but i guess the shoutout this time goes to the HONG writers for the wonderful turn of events here... they're taking us to a whole new level of plot-scheming without ever losing the touch of every genre possible... the script's written to play viewers emotionally and mentally as it goes from drama to action to suspense then romance to humor and back again... i would never tire watching this and reading the recap all over again... it was written perfectly to fit everyone's taste (viewers) and talents (actors) and was directed well with a touch of class and style... i hope the writers and the director will keep this drama the way we've come to love it (or much more... kekeke)... we're more than halfway through and my love for everybody is growing stronger than n could ever imagine that i already dread its eventual end... would i sob even harder than SOAW, MGIAG and SG?! i dont want to know... :(

I beg to differ about Beethoven Virus not being great!

[spoilers]

I just loved that show, except that I understand why a lot of people didn't like it because *every* character ends up alone. Sob. Plus the cute guy (Jang Geun Suk) didn't get his girl. The drama is more of a character-exploration/development show rather than a romance, and gosh, what a character the Hong sisters created in Kang-mae the conductor. He was written, and acted, to absolute charisma by Kim Myung Min. Plus the dialogue is snappy and there are many witty moments (like K2H). So...I've never really understood why people didn't like BV, except for the absence of eye candy (there's only Jang Geun Suk) and the bittersweet open ending (which is pretty realistic anyway).

0

I'm with randaom person on BV. It's not your regular romance but the characterization and relationship development were fantastic. Very heart-warming. And I loved the actor who played the conductor - excellent acting chops which made his character very believable, hated and loved at the same time. BV is definitely worth watching.

0

@ random person AND babes:

I myself haven't watched it but it's a word-of-mouth opinion of the drama that I've heard viz sadly enough to dissuade me from watching it.

Also, forgot to add that the writer/PD worked on BV as well!

0

BV was a hit in Korea (I think that time shows like 'Kingdom of wind', 'East of eden' were running but BV had the most buzz due to KMN/ Kan-mae acting).
People loved KMN acting but People did not like the ending - Open ending with no promise.
Kang-mae and Yi JiA's hand holding scene was said to be hotter than a kiss.

0

Co-signing a bit here but I agree with the previous comments. I did actually enjoy Beethoven Virus but it wasn't to this level of quality writing for sure...

I will say this...the romance was unusual in that I honestly found myself wanting the story to end with a Triad. (Not that that would happen in a KDrama since the world is not ready yet. :/) Now it wasn't because I couldn't decide who should be with whom but rather the drama focused a lot on the growing intimacy and closeness between all three leads.

*spoiler alert*
Four years after watching this drama the most memorable and vivid scene for me was actually between the two male leads. JGS' character breaks down and starts sobbing and begging for KMM's character not to leave/abandon him. It was one of the most emotionally moving scenes I've ever watched in a KDrama. Jussayin'
*end spoiler*

So that's my two cents on Beethoven Virus. I enjoyed it and it had really good scenes at times. I definitely didn't find it as terrible as others did.

0

@ ravensnest : wah, now you made me remember. LOL!!
it sure wasn't a drama for the mainstream.
hmmm, that drama was an odd charm.

0

Yeah, the writing/directing team on this show is just incredible.

I am just super glad that all the episodes were already written out. It makes me giddy because there's no worries for any last minute rushes on the live-shoot system. Ugh, that's the worst.
I believe thats why each episode has such a nice pacing. It sweeps you off your feet and gets your emotions full-drive. Hopefully, there's only going up from here. And the previews/ spoiler stills tells me that that shall be proven. :)

I didn't know that the episodes were already written out before filming. Interesting! It definitely explains why the pacing is so taut and the character interactions have so much depth. Is writing out the episodes prior to filming a rarity in Korean television? If so, I wonder why.

apparently, they like to procrastinate and do everything last minute.
cause yknow, these days all you're hearing is constant title changes, actor/actress dropping roles, taking roles, and all that yiddie yaddie stuff.
Just MAKE up your mind already! I'm pretty sure stress level wouldn't be as high, and they wouldn't have to scramble to get things done.
But yes, i do wonder why such things are a rarity.

And with all the love I have for this drama, I just wish the title would make sense you know!
KING 2 HEARTS? Seriously?
When the writing, pacing, camera, actors, when all of it is awesome, why couldn't they have a awesome name?!?!??!
Or there is a deeper meaning in the name, which am not getting?!!!!!!!!!! :-0

0

ilikemangos: LOL. As a writer myself, I can certainly understand procrastination :).

But you'd think, with such a quality improvement at writing things out ahead of time, more drama writers would do it.

Divyrus: LOL at your reaction to the name. It is super lame sounding and I was against it for a long time, but I've actually grown to like it. I think that the meaning works on a few levels. I'm not sure how much of this translates to the Korean, but in English, here's how I interpret it:

-Jae ha's journey is one of becoming a king to the hearts of Koreans. At the beginning of the drama, the king is viewed by the public largely as an ineffectual nepotistic position. But we're seeing, over time, that Jae-ha is gaining the respect and support of the public. So not only are we watching him grow into the role of king, but we're also seeing the royal family, led by JH, win over the hearts of the public. This ties into the password he used to lock the mysterious box he sent to Bong-gu ("people"). Bong-gu may have money and power, but Jae-ha has (or will have, I'm guessing, by the end of the show) the love and respect of the people. And in that, Jae-ha will unlock a greater power than anyone imagined was possible for a position based largely on tradition and ceremony.

-The two hearts mentioned in the title can refer both to the division between North and South Korea and to Jae-ha's relationship with Hang-ah (which, I think, is largely symbolic of the North-South relations). This is the story of a king not only reaching out to the hearts of his own public, but of one king learning to lead (or at least gain the respect of) "2" countries. It is also the story of a man learning to bridge the divide between two human hearts (his and Hang-ah's) both of which are weighed down by the prejudices between the two nations.

-Now that Hang-ah and Jae-ha are teaming up to take on Bong-gu, the title could indicate that the king's role is composed of two hearts--Jae-ha's and Hang-ah's. Alone, JH is just a man, but with HA by his side, he is a king.

-This is a much less "meaty" interpretation, but the title always makes me think of "2 of hearts" (as in, the playing card), which nicely references Bong-gu's magic schtick.

At the end of each episode, I'm always craving for more and wondering:

Who's behind all this amazingness?!!

Thumbs up to them. The writing is superb, the writers put in so much detail!!! I usually take K-dramas on a surface level, but I love it that this show has more than that.

The scenes are lovely to watch and the casting is superb. LSG and HJW are so amazing to watch, and whoever discovered Jo Jung Suk and cast him and Eun Shikyung deserves a prize.

@ random person : i have to agree on beethoven virus with you. i was partial to it because i am a big ennio morricone fan and when in the right mood classical music just lifts me up. plus, for me with all the sadness in that drama it was really their way of paying homage to these amazing musicians that don't need any words at all! a very powerful drama indeed. :)

Thanks sooo much for the recap!

This episode was amazing in so many ways!!!

1) I think one of my favourite parts was seeing HA and the WOC people getting together to save JH! I can't wait till the WOC starts and the team gets back together. I really miss that camaraderie they had!:D

2) JH's speech to Bonggu on the carousel made me crack up! "I do not love you". LOL!

3) Did anyone else laugh when the carousel went back on and evil Tom and his posse look around in confusion? The combination of suicide bomber + kid's ride was just hilarious for me.

4) The proposal scene. (SWOONS)

5) JH's gift to Bong-gu. It has to be so deflating for his ego to say all those nice things that JH has and he doesn't: "Looks, conscience, a throne."

Now how am I supposed to wait till next Wednesday?:(

ok, i'm back!!!
this week eps started me to get back my interest in this drama (after the absurd way of JaeKang n the Queen's death). i love these 2 eps, esp this one. well, actually, after the KIng n Queen's death, i kinda underestimated the plot n still pointing out the illogical things in this drama. even i love yesterday eps, i still pointed out it's weakness (like how could Sec Eun can order the JaeHa? he is the king while Sec Eun supposedly HAVE n MUST follow JaeHa orders or abt the lady assasin who seems to be more interested in playing with JaeShin n took her time while they were out in the open rather than just kill JaeShin n then run away when ShiKyung came. heck, i thought the woman is a pro killer. she must be have to much time in her hand *sarcasm*). but even that i love that eps.

but this eps.. i dont even care abt the 'hole/weakness', i love all of it!!! i love how when JH told HA abt his worries, rathern than comforted him, she out challenge him. i mean if it was other couple, she would hold his hand or hug him n assured him everything will b ok. but this is not everybody couple. this is JH n Ha nthey have ways to show their love n care. and i love how in this eps, both JH n HA now are act n think smartly n even act badass-ly... love it!!! and i love how the pw wa People. at first i thought it would be crown/king/throne. but People are wayyyyyyy better n wiser. again, so love it!!!

What's up with 2012? Shut Up: Flower Boy Band and now King 2Hearts (and I'm liking Rooftop Prince and Equator Man as well) - there must be something in the air for so many well-written dramas to appear in the first half of this year!

I loved the proposal, the character interaction, the 'drive BG crazy guessing the password' box, and the return of Action Girl Hang-ah. I can't believe how much I've bought into this dramaverse, such that I'll suspend disbelief to enjoy the show e.g. How did Kang-seok get that bazooka/ grenade launcher/ whatever? Does he sleep with it under his pillow? Did he stroll into the nearest armoury and pick one up? And while it was Hang-ah's scene, I was slightly disturbed that Jae-ha, who's completed his military training and the WOC training, doesn't take any action at all when the smoke bombs go off. Would have loved him and Hang-ah to team up to disarm the baddies.

Ah well. Looking forward to the next few episodes, hoping the show doesn't run out of momentum, and thanking you wholeheartedly for the recaps!

"I think this drama has it’s way with undercutting alot of it’s heavy moments."

That is such a brilliant way of putting it. K2H doesn't talk down to its audience. I think that's why the serious moments--the death of the king & queen, for example, or Hang ah's miscarriage--are so successful. I don't feel like I'm being led by the nose to feel that THIS IS A TRAGIC MOMENT and should be greeted with wailing and gnashing of teeth. The situations are presented with humanity and even a touch of humor, and because of that, they are all the more devastating.

Agreed! Reminded of their bickering as they walked down the hall just before JH shot HA at the door. At first, I thought, what the...? But later I appreciated the writers'/director's delicate handling of tense & light moments. They are so good at keeping us on the emotional roller coaster!

0

Babes: Great example! Scenes like that (before a big emotional reveal or a plot twist) give the show such a rich, layered sense of reality. It helps that the actors are able to turn on a dime and take us from jokey/flirty to heart-stopping tragedy in a millisecond, and that the director so deftly maps out the beat changes/action changes. And I'm just thrilled to be along for the ride :).

0

Hahaha!
And I love the nonchalant way he carries it. It's like no big deal, this thing I do everyday.
Just like he shoots off two knives (or whatever they are) into the dorm wall he's supposed to share with Jae Ha!
Hilarious indeed!

Required fields are marked *

LOL, yes, when it's about bazooka,,,it's totally Kang Seok it is.
I don't know why, but there is something in his role which tickled me even more.

And to see him bring out bazooka, more over for saving Jae Ha...that's more than mere hillarious LOL LOL

Required fields are marked *

I'd like to think that the reason why Jae Ha couldn't move an inch was because he was so mesmerized, gobsmacked by how awesome HIS woman is. Jae Ha had that dazed look I interpret as this: she loves me! after I so royally effed-up, she came for me!

And of course, she had to finish it off by walking out oh-so-casually and never once looking in his direction. I wub it!

"I was slightly disturbed that Jae-ha, who’s completed his military training and the WOC training, doesn’t take any action at all when the smoke bombs go off."

It'd have been strange for him to take action. Rememer that he sucks at fighting. I don't think he has the confidence to wrestle a gun from someone. He'd have most likely botched it. He can probably only shoot.

He's a king that wars with words, not with fists. Reminds me of Sejong from Tree With Deep Roots. Hehe.

This episode is nomu nomu DAEBAK!!!

I used to skip Bong Gu's scenes but with Jae Ha trying to one up his brand of crazy, I'm totally buying him as the villain. Its so satisfying watching Bong Gu seethe in frustration every time he says something that Jae Ha has that he doesn't...I can see the loose screws in his brain slowly coming undone! Now I see why the writers had to make him so over-the-top lunatic.

Kudos to the writers for stepping up their game with each episode. And the PD, too...this drama looks and feels like a movie. Of course, it goes without saying that our OTP, is just pure gold. Seriously, when did Lee Seungi-gi become such a HOT manly man in my eyes? And HJW...my forever girl-crush. And the rest of the actors, they are all bringing it.

The proposal scene could so easily be turned into a farce, an emotional fake, or empty sweetness. But no, TK2H pulls through, as usual. We are treated with a visual celebration and a truthful heart-to-heart. As a viewer, I don't feel I am an outsider watching. I swear I know what Jae Ha and Hang Ah are thinking at that moment. As always, reading your recap tickled my mind. But, I realized that King2Hearts is such a wonderful drama that has be seen first and dissected later. I never I knew that I had such willpower to withold myself from reading the recaps before a subbed episode was available. Now I know what addicts go through while waiting for their next fix.

So many wonderful things about the episode. Where do I start?
- Eun ShiKyung and Jae Ha defying the Secretary to make a public broadcast AND sneaking off to the north to get back the fair damsel
- How HangAh tells JaeHa to bugger off
- JaeHa's rejecting BongGu's declaration of love
- JaeHa's plan to seduce BongGu's girlfriend because he HAS to
I could go on, but I am pretty sure no one wants to read a recap of the recap!

And now, I shall go back to researching ways to speed up time, while stalling the ageing process.

I was actually one of those nay-sayers when LSG was announced as the male lead on TK2H. I didn't think he was particularly handsome nor cute. However, once the show started, I had to eat my words, big time!! Wow, is he good in this role. I now see that he totally owns it. So half-way into this drama, I can reflect back and try to come up with another actor who can do this role: Kang Ji Hwan? Park Shi Hoo? One of the original names mentioned was Cha Seung Won. I really like him, but I think he is too old for the role of the younger brother (JH). Not sure who else was offered this role. Oh, another name: Jang Geun Seuk. Maybe Yoo Ah In.

I have a confession to make. At first, I was apprehensive with the pairing of HJW and LSG. Boy, was I wrong, and happily admitting it. Now, I can't see anyone portraying the King except LSG. His acting is so spot on. He sure did come a long way and his acting improved a ton. The way he talks, his smile and the way he walks..gahhh!

I remember that one post -- lol. i didn't bother to read down further.
people were too quick to judge.
Honestly, we need to --quote jae ha-- "believe in me, just this once?"
Kudos though, to those who are admitting to currently eating up their words.
You never know until you see it with your own eyes!
But i'm glad that he's surprising viewer after viewers.
So proud seunggi. *sniff.
I remember when i first saw your cuteness in Shining Inheritance.

Actually, I didn't doubt him acting wise, because I have seen him in Shining Inheritance and I love his performance. It was the age gap between the two leads that I was uneasy of. However, seeing them now...I can't even tell that Ha Ji Won is almost a decade older than him. And not to mention the sizzling chemistry they've got going on. So, glad I'm watching this show "live!" My first, by the way. Aja, TK2H!

no matter how we say age doesn't matter but it's so fixed indelibly to our minds across every culture that we can't help but judge.

it was more on their age gap for me. i felt like really is there no one out there ??? it was partly too that i didn't want seung gi's and ha ji won's career to be tainted and i'm glad that i was wrong.

as with most " match made in heaven " don't they always start with not knowing / unexpected happenings. well, we got ourselves a treat. :)

Maria that was my main concern too. So, agree with your sentiments. I'm so happy I was wrong. "match made in heaven" it is. :)

The age gap did surprise me, but I remembered Seunggi saying in a 2010 interview that he was a fan of "Secret Garden" and how he would love to work with HJW someday, so I was excited to see that they actually paired up.

As for the 9 year age gap, I was wondering how it would pan out, but it's not showing at all in this drama. They both pass off easily as 30 year olds and HJW is just so gorgeous.

i think the fact that they both love working with each other and seems like they're getting along SO well on set...
Makes the chemistry so hothot hott-er.

i didn't watch hwang jin yi but i saw bits of it. her and geun suk were okay. although i couldn't really tell about the chemistry since i wasn't giving it my full attention but i didn't even notice the age difference at that time.

now i'm wondering is this woman really for real?
i don't think we'll ever see another actress who can blend with her opposite costar so well crossing all ages. >.

all i can say is the chemistry here between her and seunggi is seriously making me rethink of her and jo in sung. wah!!

The USB drive reveals Jae Ha seducing that Crackpot's girlfriend and pretty Hang Ah bashes Jae Ha again?!?! I hope not as they ought to be loving and trust each other from now on*:゚・♡φ(o ⋓‿⋓ o)ノ~~

HJW and LSG should have more screen time to boost higher rating pts, they have very strong chemistry together♡♡♡good take!

I have a feeling what is in the box will probably be something completely anticlimax that will majorly piss off Bonggu and have the rest of us keeling over in laughter. [think an empty bottle of cream:P]

Apparently, in the (hopefully) next few episodes, there will be an engagement party for Jae Ha And Hang Ah ( she's wearing a beautiful white gown.)

and our wonderful, missed WOC crew is reuniting for some celebrations.

Yeah, Mr. Kim is awesome! How great is it that the parental figures in this show are 100% lovable?

That is one thing I find so refreshing about this drama. I get tired of all the parental disaproval being used to keep the main couple apart. And it's also nice not to have the typical bratty girl/nice boy seconds leads too. This drama has plenty of conflict for the leads without those typical plot points. I love it!

Forreal.
Yay for political conflicts rather than in-law conflicts.
ENOUGH OF THAT.

and certainly no third party!!! THANK YOU writers :)

Ditto. And am so glad that there's not third party too, as @maria mentioned. As most of us here say, the show's such a breath of fresh air.

OMG i fell in love with Mr.Kim in this one.
he was playing detective all over and maintaining peace when things got out of hand.
I feel so bad for all the stress put on him -- he loves his daughter so much and doesn't want her to go through any pain, and yet, he still has the political responsibility of NK.

I love it when he said to jae ha not to come back to North korea -- cause everytime he does, he always has to clean up his messes. HAHAHAH so true, though.
It was sweet.

Thank you for recapping as always! You are wonderful. :-)

Even though Jae Ha wasn't as badass as Hang Ah in this episode, I appreciated that he still had his moments of romance/sweetness as well as mental bad-assery with John Meyer/Bong-gu. There were lots of squeal-worth moments from the King. I have to say though, I screamed out loud when I saw Kang-seok come out with that big-ass bazooka. I totally missed that guy! Like many people, I'm sure, I would have loved to see him and the other WOC people get together after they saved the King's ass. I hope he shows up again!

I was fist-pumping the bazooka scene so heard. I think I squeal-laughed, too. So. Awesome.
