It’s definitely been a chock-full drama year so far and there’s a glut of premieres about to hit at any moment, but one of the shows that’s farther off in the distance has been holding my interest for months now: the ghost fantasy-fusion romance drama Arang and the Magistrate, due out later in the summer. Now that the cast has been finalized, the production has officially begun. Here they are, gathered for the first table read to kick things off.
Shin Mina plays Arang the wronged ghost, formerly the young daughter of the local magistrate who gets brutally attacked and left for dead. (In the original legend it’s doubly horrible because she’s attacked in an attempted rape, and then when she goes missing, they label her as shameful, assuming she ran away with a man out of wedlock. I mean, can you blame a girl for getting her revenge on?) She haunts every new magistrate who comes to town, until Lee Jun-ki shows up for the post one day, and the two fall in love. Talk about your obstacles.
Yeon Woo-jin (Ojakkyo Brothers) plays the villain, and Yoo Seung-ho (Operation Proposal) is doing a guest stint as the King of Heaven, a whimsical ruler who gives the lovers an important clue in their quest to right the wrongs in Arang’s murder. Hwang Bora (Love Rain) plays Arang’s shaman sidekick, Kwon Oh-jung (The Duo) is the magistrate’s servant and stalwart bodyguard, and Han Jung-soo (Poseidon) a guardian angel who serves the King of the Underworld.
It sounds like a really interesting world with a dense mythology, a classic whodunit murder mystery, and an epic love story between the living and the dead — all great things, if they can deliver. And I just love that the heroine will be a vengeance ghost. You get those baddies with your haunty ways.
Arang and the Magistrate will follow I Do, I Do on MBC.

Yes Ive been waiting as well. LJK amaze me once more in 2012
Looking forward. Waiting patiencely.
shin min ah <3
Yessss!
I know most actors don’t like to by type-cast, but this girl does a mean supernatural character. I loved her wild shots for Gumiho. Maybe next she’ll be a vampire or a werewolf.
Juuuust kidding~ maybe…
Among of all of the dramas that are about to air. This is the one that I WANT to watch the most. I can’t believe it airs after I do I do. >_<"
Same here and I hope it wont be a disappointment like some that I’ve seen already.
I wasnt looking forward to QIHM but its now my favorite drama so far eventhough there are 6 eps left.
Shhhhhh Don’t talk about QIHM and the “e” word.
It will never do that in my heart!
It will go on for ever and ever!!
Quick! We need to come up with a reason for a sequel.
Season 1 – HJ and BD end up together (HEY, THIS IS A LEGITIMATE USE OF THE “E” WORD)~<3
Season 2 – Time traveling side effects and BD dies and becomes a vengeful ghost (WTP, right!?), but now HJ gets to be badass and avenge him…I totally did not steal the plot from Arang. Nope~!! *Shifty eyes*
WHATEVER. ALL FOR THE SAKE OF MORE BD AND MORE BDXHJ<3
LOL and bow to
(THIS IS A LEGITIMATE USE OF THE āEā WORD)~<3
I am seriously going to cry for days when the episodes cease to be new.
DAYS? Weeks!
lol. “No ‘e’ word” seems to be your motto Jomo.
THIS T_T
Me too! My birthday present to myself!
Yeah, I can’t wait for this as well. I’ve only seen LJK in My Girl and Soulmates. All courtest of all you guys on OT.
So I want to see what’s the fuss about him now that he doesn’t look like a kiddo. Seriously. Am curious. There is a serious amount of swooning every time you guys talk about him.
What’s the attraction?
LJK was not in Soulmate. That was Shin Dong Wook ^^
Hahaha. Thanks for the correction. Now you guys know I ended up being a LDW fan instead.
Because he so pretty! I actually really liked him in Time between Dog and Wolf.
Thanks again for the Dalja’s Spring links!
LOVED TBDW!! My first drama purchase ever!! I still watch it constantly! Best revenge drama (until Equator Man) ever!
One of my favorite dramas – so solid all the way through. And Lee Jun ki did very well with a challenging role.
Me, too. Loved it.
LOVED him as Kay chewing gum and driving NSM crazy.
You’re welcome. It sounds as if I better start downloading TBDW if everyone was impressed by it.
It is like a very long film.
All the actors are great.
Good kisses. You KNOW how important that is.
Jomo… hahaha…. you know my priorities in K dramas so well.
Definitely! Well worth the time to download! Its on my iPad, computer; everywhere!
Amen to all the praises for LJK’s acting in TBDW. I love… love… that drama. It has action and drama. It is the best I’ve seen of him!
I don’t get the “pretty” comments.
Androgynous (as in a bit weird looking) in the mold of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust – yes, but not what would be considered the a typical “pretty boy.”
Did you see King/Clown?
TBDW…now that was bloody epic. I loved every minute of it.
@ck10z – my comment (no 26 below) was meant in response to you. I am new to this site and am trying to navigate around.
The attraction? certainly not his “pretty boy” look alone as i was quite impressed with his performance in TBDW.
TBDW was phenomenal and actually the last drama of his that I watched! Searched out all of his movies after that so I’ve seen them all except May 19 movie (think its called)!
me2 (even about may 19. i don’t have the courage to watch that. but all the rest… even if i had to hang on with all my might lol.)
apparently TBDW is one of his best works but I haven’t seen him in that….first saw him in My girl and then Flying Boys where he played conventional male characters but it wasn’t until I saw him in the King and the Clown (finally), 2 years ago that I fell in love with him….his performance blew me away and made me a bona fide LJK fan….which is why I’m extra escited that he’s picked a sageuk as his comeback
TBDW is his best drama! You got a peak into that type of character in his movie Fly Daddy Fly because he plays a rather rough character. But you are right, once I saw King and the Clown, I was convinced he could act!
In TBDW, he plays a bad guy, a good guy, an ambiguous guy and a “try to guess what he is now guy.”
Despite the fact that he was wearing the same body, you could TELL which person he was because of the way he held himself and spoke. It was pretty amazing.
He has a very low voice, which lessens the pretty boy affect, too.
I think the way he moves his very beautiful eyes is pretty hot as well. You can see him thinking. As we all know, THINKING is sexy.
Yeah, you could always tell which character he was by his speech and eyes. It was amazing! TBDW is excellent!
You hit the nail on the head. And he played a tortured soul exceedingly well in the drama.
Jun-ki’s best drama is not only TBDW, there’s also “Iljimae”: The Phantom Thief~ It’s SBS production. In this, you can also see him as a mischievous boy at day & super thief at night who helps the poor! That’s also the best historical action production with excellent storyline & perfomances of all actors that you won’t find in most other K-dramas^^
I hope you will discover this amazing artist~ That’s why most of his fans can’t fall for other K-actors with only good-looks…kkk
Lee Jun-ki is baaaaaaaaaaaaack !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^^
AMAZING ACTING in Iljimae !!!
Is it July already?!I can’t wait!
Cannot wait, no more exams = excuse to overdose on dramas ^^
I’m too excited to watch this! It’s quite interesting for me, plus I love Shin Mina.
I’m waiting for this one. What a cast… If the story follows then it’s going to be great. When i see all the promising dramas coming our way i’m overwhelmed. This summer is going to be hot.
Luved LJK in Iljimae and Time Between Dog and Wolf!
Shin Mina in a A Bittersweet Life, Time To Kill, and My Mighty Princess^^. Although I didn’t care 4 My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox…she owned that drama.
I haven’t seen Mighty Princess in ages…Bittersweet Life though…LBH’s character T_T
Eeeep! Totally can’t wait for this one! Starts straight after my exams are over so it’s purrrrfect. ^^
Junki Oppa!!!!! This is the one that I’ve been waiting!!! Hopefully it rock cause if it fail to deliver, I’ll be so sad. I’ve waited so long for Junki gracing my tv again… please be awesome.
LEE JUN KI!!!! You’re back finally!!! =)))
Lee Joon Gi!!!!!
woot!!!
YOO SEUNG HO! HOTTIE !
EEEE!!!! I’m so ridiculously excited about this drama. Lee Jun-ki! Shin Mina! Ghosts! Revenge! – In other words, some of my favorite drama ingredients!
I love trendies, but I’m so glad LJK chose something like this for his first post-army drama. It’s a much more interesting comeback choice than a standard rom-com.
If this drama is even half as awesome as I’m hoping it will be, I’m gonna be one happy camper.
can’t wait for this drama!
SMN is so classy. Love her accessories.
I miss Mi Ho ya!
Sounds fun for the summer – the time for all spooky dramas and films!
Is it weird all I could notice in the pictures was that somebody must be the spokesperson for barley tea? Lee Junki? Only his picture has a clear photo of the drink and it’s opened. Slyyyyyyyyyyy, dude.
Oh! The article is wrong!! The Heroine is the amazing talented guy Lee Jun-ki, the Magistrate “Eun-oh”^^ Waiting…too excited!!!
I hope the article is right because I prefer him as the hero :p.
I also said “Jun-Ki” is the HERO^^ Shin Min-a won’t be a hero bcuz she lost her memory after she died. The Magistrate “Eun-oh” will find the truth with both intelligence & super martial art skills, kk~ Hmm… oppa will be so damn hottttt!!
Its its Shin Mina Awwwww!!! <3
I love Shin Mina (period)! so I will be watching this. She is so dang beautiful. I wonder if the guys are nervous to be working with her….keke
I can’t wait for this drama…asldka;l
Eff yeah! Lee Jun Ki can make dead girls fall in love with him. (Not that there isn’t enough competition amongst the living.)
And Shin Mina. Icing on the cake!
This drama is looking delicious from where I’m standing.
I highly recommend Time between Dog and Wolf (TBDW) – it was this drama that introduced me LJK. He was fantastic there and sadly I find that his other dramas i.e. My girl where he was the second lead was very much the typical “pretty boy” role with not much substance to his character, did not match up with his performance in Time between Dog and Wolf! I am really looking forward to seeing him again in this drama which I find pretty intruguing given the premise of the story. Hopefully I will again see the LJK that I saw in TBDW.
Talk about an introduction! Mine was Iljimae! Everything else came afterwards. I happened to find TBDW on Netflix, watched the first disk and immediately went on a hunt for the entire drama to purchase! let’s just say I got my money’s worth! I really was hoping he would do another drama like TBDW because it highlighted his physical capabilities. Can’t say that I have been crazy about My Girl or Hero. I simply watched because he was there.
I forgot about Iljimae – he was pretty good in it. After seeing him in My Girl i was disappointed and did not check out his other movies/dramas. So i am having high hopes for this new drama of LJK.
I watched him first in Iljimae and fell in love with his smile and his tears (man, he had a lot). Iljimae still holds a special place in my heart.
then you should totally check out the King and the Clown…I was seriously unimpressed by him in My Girl too and it wasn’t until I saw him in this movie that I came to see that he has more than just looks
thanks much. i will check it out.
“My Girl” was simply unwatchable.
Haha, I became LJK nut after My Girl. I watched the drama with my whole family, and with some snarky comments from my mom and sister, it made the whole thing more fun. My mom borrowed the DVD from a friend who bought it, and honestly, I couldn’t even take my eyes off of his pictures on the box. I was giddy, practically. Soon after I watched King and the Clown, and man did LJK have a phenomenal performance. After that was Iljimae, which was eeeh, I guess. I didn’t really like the drama as a whole, though LJK was fantastic as always. Then came TBDW and I was seriously in love. Arrrrrrrgh. It was so…sexy.
I don’t really recommend May 18, or Splendid Holiday, if you’re looking for just LJK, since he’s the hero’s brother. But it’s not a bad movie, though not one of the best war films I’ve seen.
talking about dramas to air, i wonder when is King Muyol going to air as King Gwanggaeto the great ended a few weeks ago and nothing happened..
I miss Lee Jun Ki. I love Shin Mina. Throw in a Yoon Seung-ho and I am in K-drama heaven.
Can’t wait for this.
uhhh. Shin Min Ah as a ghost who really wants revenge? But how can I get her out of my mind as the gumiho who takes advantage of our adorkable Woong <3
and YES LEE JUN KI <3 No underrated but his last couple of dramas before enlisting in the army SUCKED
Hope this one is a hit!
yeah, Miho and DaeWoong were SOOOO adorable together!! I dropped it the first time around and am glad decided to stick with it the second time around.
Yeah, Hero was tolerable but not good.
Yoo Seung Ho looks quite relax~~~ But this boy is wearing the shirt from Operation Proposal ep5 – he bought it or kept it as a souvenir of this drama, I guess.
How do you remember that!
I am impressed!
Heyyy Min-ah, long time no see <3
This is the drama that I want to see already!
I love all the leads, but I didn’t know OB’s little bro, Yun Woo Jin was also in this. He is a major scene stealer, I think.
If you are tolerant of gay couples – and believe me, they don’t hold back – check him and Lee Je Hoon out on YT in a very short film called: Just Friends. This would be rated R in the States. You have been warned!
This is acting. Neither of them are gay.
Hey, Jomo, how are you going to watch this? You’re scared of Casper the Friendly Ghost, remember? I don’t think this ghost is going to be friendly.
Yay! I’m more excited about this than I Do, I Do. The upcoming dramas I’m going to watch so far are Big and Arang
So excited for this! It’s like everything I love in one drama: fantasy, horror, murder mystery, Shin Min Ah, and Lee Jun Ki.
Maknae oppa!
Of the summer dramas I’m looking fwd to this and Faith the most (hello, awesome writer!!).
I recently watched MGIAG and I just wanted to nomnom Miho….the most adorable female character ever!! In K-dramas there’s such a fine line b/w adorable/cutesy and annoying and SMA handled her role with aplomb!
I WILL be watching TBDW next to see what Junki’s all about. I’ve only watched him in My Girl…’nuff said!!
If you are watching Rooftop Prince, you will also recognize the guy playing Tae Mu!
Stopped watching RTP!! He’s in TBDW?!
I liked him so much better in PK…..he’s such a one-dimensional character who’s plain annoying in RTP.
My LJK is back!!!!!!
))))))
Can’t wait to watch this drama
hooo, so in the year- end award event of mbc we will have a chance to see Min Ah with Jun Ki and Seung Gi with Ji Won battle the title of best couple out?
imagine, if Jun Ki replaced by Hyun Bin
how will it turn?
I notice that every posters who commented about SMA always talk about how pretty, how classy etc. she is and not talking about how good her acting is. Is she that bad actor that everyone avoid that issue ??
I was not crazy about her in A Love to Kill, did like her in MGIAG but the movies I’ve seen have really, really been good! The Devil was ok. But her movies have been more interesting especially My Mighty Princesss, Sad Movie, and A Bittersweet Life
“Sad Movie” is real nice ensemble film, but “MMP” otoh is a total mess.
One of SMA’s bets films is one of her earliest – “Madeleine” where her charisma really shine thru (“Madeleine also has one of the best K-film soundtracks).
For K-dramas, MGIAG, despite its flaws, is worth a watch just for SMA’s adorable performance as Mi-ho.
An underappreciated drama w/ SMA is “Punch” (w/ Joo Jin moo). SMA also shines in that drama and has a lot of chemistry w/ JJM.
One thing I really like about SMA is that she can be so cute/adorable on screen w/ it being totally NATURAL.
Some actresses try to act all cute and adorable and it comes across as fake/trying too hard, but it just comes naturally to SMA.
Yup, agree with MMP, it’s such a mess.
I’ve also seen “Sister on the Road” but she’s overshadowed by GHJ’s acting, I thought she could have been better there
Not really interested on her character in MGIAG. So many actresses playing cutesy lately
The point is SMA could be a very good actor with her talent but she choose to be not by choosing a “save” character & be a CF queen instead
SMA’s character was cute, but not in an artificial way like for many actresses.
It takes talent to do cute (Mi-ho wasn’t just cute; also had a darker, not to mention “raunchy” side), esp. cute w/o being cloying and cute w/ great comedic timing.
As for this whole “cute”-thing, most of SMA’s roles have been quite different.
My criticism would be that she has’t always picked the greatest projects (those w/ good writing/scripts), but finding one isn’t that easy.
Forgot Punch, it was good!
SMA is a pretty good actress; definitely one of the better ones when it comes to actresses also being known for their looks.
Lee Jun Ki….:))) I think I watch My Girl so many times because of him…lol
So nice to have him back and definitely will be watching this one.
The success of this drama would probably spawn a new trend – supernatural love. I think that would be a nice change from the overworked time travel theme. Or who knows, they may even COMBINE supernatural love and time travel: Hero goes back in time, falls in love, girl dies, hero travels back sadly to his own time and the faithful childhood sweetheart waiting for him. Little does he know the girl’s spirit has travelled back with him – until she starts appearing in every snapshot that he takes….I’m creeped out by what I’ve just written *shivers*
is this saeguk or modern drama?
Oooooh, this looks very interesting, i’ll be sure to keep my eyes peeled for this
Yoo. Seung. Ho.
!!!!!!!!!!!
n LJK is looking skinny there.
Jun Ki!!!! I’ve been waiting for your next drama and now there’s a bonus.. you’ll be pairing up with one of my fave actresses!
looking forward to this one! kyaaaa!~ <3
The story sounds really interesting! I shall be keeping a look out for this drama.
And, did the header for the comments section change recently? “88 COMMENTS FROM THE BEANUT GALLERY” heheh, so cute.
it has Shin Min Ah what more do you need!!
There are soooo many reasons to watch this drama:
#1 Lee Jun Ki. <3 He is my second Korean crush (first one was Rain and for some reason they remind me of each other).
#2 Shin Min Ah. I fell in love with her from MGIAG and this is after seeing her in the horror that was A Love to Kill. Ugh. I look forward to seeing her as a ghost. She has an ethereal kind of beauty so playing non-human characters suit her.
#3 Maknae OPPA~!! I can't wait to see him being evil. Lub him so much. I hope he doesn't die in the end. Even its a sageuk…this can happen, right?
#4 Yu Seung Ho. My dongsaeng crush. Sometimes I look at his pic in my phone and wonder why he's only 18. So….wrong. His acting is great.
#5 (and by no means least) The plot! It sounds absolutely fantastic! I like that there's even a guardian entity for the King of the Underworld. It sounds like a manga story-line so I am completely sold! *^_^*
YSH, SMN, & LJK! …what more could we ask for?!
