We’re having a potluck at the office today, so since everyone will probably be bringing some form of chips ‘n dip, I’ve elected to offer up two types of desserts for the shindig: Tequila-Lime Snickerdoodles and Chocolate-Ancho Chili Cookies. So bring on the drinks and LET’S PARTY!!! Oh wait… you tell me it’s only 6:30 AM right now? And your point is?
Not much happening in NorCal since the last OT — we had another gorgeous weather week, which made running back-and-forth to The Mothership tolerable for a change. It’s nice to see things settle into a dull roar for a few more days, but then another trial rears its ugly head on 14 May and I’ll be ramping up for that shortly. I’d better stock up on ramyun and soju (and whipped cream?) before that hits…
Has anyone seen the Kanu Coffee commercial that’s been running on the various K-stations? Gong Yoo opening a coffee stand inside a box of instant keopi packets, and it’s majorly swoonworthy. Oh Gong Yoo, wae you so awesomely awesome? I predict “Big” is going to be HUGE (hee!) on his squee-power alone. Bring it!!
Finally finished up Dream High 2 this week. Like I mentioned before, since I fast-forwarded through most of that nightmare, I’ll only ask for 11.35 hours of my life back. I’m hoping to catch up on EM and CLBM over the weekend to clear off more space on the DVR to grab “Love Rain” when it starts on KBS World next Monday night. I can’t wait until I have enough time to marathon some of the latest offerings, so I’m insanely jealous of you guys who are engrossed in K2H and RP right now. I’ll catch up soon, I promise… and DB Recappers, keep up the mega-awesome work you guys are putting forth right now!! You folks RAWK!!!
Gotta give a shoutout to the Pride of Northbrook, Illinois — I’ve had the new John Park album on heavy rotation for awhile now. What a unique voice!! And since I don’t watch that travesty called “American Idol,” I had no idea he was on there a few seasons back; I just remember him runner-upping to Huh Gak (another of my favorites) in “Superstar K2″ last year. I’d surely pay good money to see him and K.Will singing a duet together — the Battle of the Falsettos!!
But most importantly, there’s a new addition to my immediate chingu circle — friends that have been trying to conceive for years finally did, and their little girl was born yesterday at 1:35 AM up at Stanford. Everyone is just over the moon, especially ME since I haven’t held a baby in my arms for so long and it’s just the best thing in the whole wide world. Sigh. So now I’ve got another cutie for which to offer up my crack babysitting services… and I can’t wait to introduce her to the world of K-dramas when she’s old enough!!
Anyway, time to pack up and head over to the office. What are you guys all up to on this fine day, ne?

I can probably get some recommendations for you for cheap places to stay in Seoul… (I know plenty of people who’ve been here for a fairly long time.)
So… if you’re really coming to Korea and want suggestions (etc.), definitely let me know!
The ticket is only £60 ($90ish… maybe…. the exchange rate changes a lot) so yeah I think I am definately going!!!
Only problem so far is my Mandarin Course is taking forever to get organised hence I am waiting and waiting for the uni to get itself together… ^sighs^
And cheap places to stay are really welcomed!!!! Me and my friend are planning to stay 2/3 weeks!
So when do you think you’ll be coming? (Summers here seem to be hot and humid as hell, but if you’re living in England, as I gather, I remember a summer I spent there that was also hot and humid as hell, so maybe you’ll be fine
)
I will be coming roughly about mid august… maybe?
And I am not used to hot… only cold and wet. That’s because in the UK anything above 25C causes the country to collapse…

Regarding accommodations, try agoda.com. I’ve booked some of my hotels thru that site and it worked quite well. You can filter your selections of hotels/guesthouses per area. If you’re staying in Seoul, I’d recommend Anne Guesthouse – it’s the best one and it’s in the Hongdae area. I’ve also stayed in Seoul Backpackers – while it’s not the top guesthouse, the location is very good.

And then we have rooftop prince where I have noooo idea how this story is going to play out. Thousand theories ofcourse. i love writing the ending in my head.
and my new crack. Queen In-hyuns man. I love the contrast between the hero in that and how he copes with his time travel and YiGak in rooftop prince.
Now I have to start QIHM…I haven’t started EM either. I’ve been wound up in that nightmare that is FK and the absolute joy that is RTP. and recapping it with MadDino. That is so much fun. Recapping FK is the only thing tha tmakes it bearable.
QIHM is da bomb! I ended up watching all the episodes back to back. It differs from RTP a lot, but is just as enjoyable.
So I’ve heard! I will most definitely start it when I catch up on K2h. Only 2 episodes to catch up on tho!

Rooftop Prince is awesome,with every episode a new theory comes into my mind,and the next episode totally kills that theory!I just hope that writers at least know where the story is going!
I am loving ‘Love Rain’. I was watching the last episode on Viki and at the end I screamed ” Oh sh*&$!” and noticed that the next fifteen comments on the screen shared my sentiments.
JGS is blowing my mind. Every time I threaten to write him off for good he reminds me of how awesome he can be onscreen.
And some people say he can’t act?
I can slam JGS with the best of them, but I would never say that he is a poor actor. With all his ‘Prince of Asia’ talk I want to hate on him sooo bad, lol. But his acting is tops.
He really is very talented. He builds a character, with his slight gestures and quirks.
It reminds me a little of Choi Min Soo. (No! I wouldn’t go as far as to compare them. CMS is too out of his league for that)
CMS also builds a character that I think even writers didn’t imagine. JGS has done the same with his Joon character. I also saw that in his Tae Kyung character in You’re beautiful. He adds a little extra to the script.
But off screen he’s a little wierd.
@aoiaheen: A little weird?? Define little… LOL. I love his acting but once he starts to open his mouth in real life, I just have to move on to something else. His acting is so mature and in real life … argg!!
the ending rocked! But my absolute fav scene was the one where he hugs her while drunk and says, “I don’t feel a thing.” OMG! he nailed that scene because you can see the emotions play across his face but the heroine can’t. I almost cried for that one.
The most surprising thing about Love Rain is how realistic the writing has been for the young couple. They’re going through a real dating cycle
For example, it seemed that SJ was going through “noble idiot” syndrome, but if you rewatch the episode, you realize that he PANICS around his parents. From the beginning, he’s noticeably uncomfortable around both of his parents. Not hostile, just nervous, and it’s consistent with a child who grew up around his parents fighting all the time. Things would go well with Ha Na, and then BOOM his parents act out, and it’s like “cold hard reality” comes crashing down again. His perspective makes sense. If you JUST started a relationship and realized the complication, wouldn’t you decide to end it before it got “serious”?
That’s the beauty of the setup. The “noble idiot” syndrome sucks, because we already know the person loves the other person and is doing this for “their sake.” That isn’t the case here. He actually acts like a person who’s never had a serious relationship, and he doesn’t realize how strongly he feels until the “drunk ex-boyfriend” thing.
I loved the drunk ex-boyfriend scene, because that was done realistically. Most drunk ex-BF scenes are used to set up a muffled, incoherent confession. But if you’ve ever had an ex come over . . . well, Love Rain actually did it right.
yeah. totally agree. SJ is not being a noble idiot. He’s just doing the sensible thing. After all they haven’t been dating all that long and they can esily move on to other relationships.
Except of course, it doesn’t look like he can move on.
And now that i think about it, yes, SJ is definitely uncomfortable around his parents. The scene where he asks his father to break off his relationship with YH – it was almost like he was talking to an acquaintance. He really loves his mother but just can’t live with her. Poor boy.

I think the big surprise for me is that Love Rain, for all of its soft focus Love Story-isms, has ended up being a really good (and unsentimental) family drama.
For all intent and purposes, his mother is a high functioning alcoholic. Even before Yeon Hee’s return, it’s obvious that Hye Jung has a drinking problem and is not aware of the effect her behaviour had on her son. That effect on her son is essentially different than on her ex-husband.
The more SJ falls in love with Ha Na, the more he shows himself to be his father’s son. He has the arrogance, bravado, selfishness of his mom, but that hides the same basic loneliness and sincere decency that he shares with his father.
I almost died during that scene. Just melt into a puddle of sadness. It was heartbreaking.
Loving Love Rain. I was actually down to 2 shows live (RTP and K2H) using my split-screen, multi-tasking method, then sometime week before I marathoned both Love Rain and K-Pop Ultimate Survivor. Before you know it, I was streaming those live as well.
I loved that drunk scene! I thought really was going to cry with JGS and Yoona. They were both quite good. Can’t wait for ep 13.

I LOVED the countryside. My SIL lived in Hereford, so we stayed with her and took daytrips. I’m not much for big cities and she hates to drive in London, so we didn’t do much there. But we saw Stratford Upon Avon, Stonehenge, Oxford, the Cotswolds, Cardiff (Wales), Avebury, and a ton of little towns I can’t remember now. Oh, Hay-on-Wye (called Ham-on-Rye by Sam’s bros, lol), if you love old books, that’s the coolest place in the world.

Yeah, for other cities in the UK, EDINBURGH! Whenever I go to Edinburgh I’m like “Why am I living in London again?” And I like London a lot, don’t get me wrong. It’s just that Edinburgh is absolutely wonderful in every way. Starting from the Scottish accent of course.

Mostly because they keep bringing them back and advertising them as a new story, only I sit down to watch it and it’s something I watched in 2004.

Love the premise but it’s a bit slow — I hate the side characters, they really don’t add anything to the storyline, especially the evil assistant — but maybe it’s the sort of thing that is better to read when it’s all finished and you can marathon it in one night. In drama form that might work better actually, because it would probably structured differently (not so fragmented with present-flashback cut ins etc)
Because I really want to know more about how the main characters’ relationship started, but the manhwa is always only throwing crumbs…

Its so ironic how the subs for everything have a tendency to come out in the same time period – weekend. So I’m always caught up by Monday and then from Monday to Wednesday I’m looking around. To fill that gap I’ve decided to take up the jdramas Keizoku and Keizoku 2~SPEC. Hmmm…I’ve also been fitting in some anime time.

I love K2H and RTP, but right now I can’t wait for them to end so that Queen In-hyun’s Man will get some loving!!! God I LOVE this drama, it’s about perfect as at as my standards go… Haha. Everytime the two leads are on the screen it practically sizzles with chemistry, and do I have to add that I love Ji Hyun-woo and Kim Boong-do?

Especially when he smiles that little smile of his. His attitude is really that of a scholar and I love him to bits. First time seeing the actor too; actually the only people I’ve watched previously are Yoo In Na and that villain dude from the Joseon era (he’s the deadbeat dad in FOTG).
I’m really enjoying Queen In-hyun’s Man! This is the first drama of late where I haven’t skipped an episode or two and I’m looking forward to next week’s episode!
Unrelated: I’m watching Fashion King because of Yoo Ah In. But the female lead character drove me CRAZY more than anything else. I was so close to quitting this drama but YAI was getting better looking with each episode so I hung on. This drama is so bad but oddly addicting because of it.

My sister recently convinced me that secret garden isn’t a bunch of silliness ( the posters and the description isn’t very helpful) and I started watching it and I haven’t been sleeping. It’s like I’m a new addict again! She told me the end doesn’t really satisfy but I want her to watch will it snow for christmas, the poor dear is going to complain about crying her face off.
Last week saturday I paid for my new computer and on sunday my old one died. Isn’t that a drama watcher’s miracle?

I have a love/hate relationship with SeGa. Amazing OST. Amazing chemistry. I hated it. I loved it. The story drove me crazy but was intrinsically compelling. I love it. I hate it. I love it. I hate it.
Same here. I started reading the re-caps half way through…I know I should be soundly beaten for that…but I was in between loving it and going to Korea to have a ‘nice’ chat with the directors.
However it had a really healthy dose of funny so I won’t complain…alot…-_-
I’m not going to go with best drama ever yet, but there are some merits. I think it has a realistic take on the chaebol ordinary girl romance even if it comes over as elitist and mean sometimes. However I find there is a too much of a disconnect between hyun bin and his character- it’s not that he’s unbelievable, it’s only that I can see someone else playing the role better.
Good things about SeGa:
Secretary Man – he’s the guy with the crazy eyes in Ahjussi, but you’d NEVER know it.

I’ve been enjoying reading the recaps and watching episodes of QIM, RTP, and K2H.
Japan TV has a lot of delayed drama broadcasts so I was also able to catch some bits of Secret Garden, Sons of Sol Pharmacy, Sweet Palpitations and Obstetrics & Gynecology Doctors.
Also read a few of the blogs of fellow Beaners. Everyone has a different writing style so it’s fun reading:)

Does anybody watch Feast of the Gods? I do. I don’t care about the cooking, in fact I hate dramas about food. Billions of people cook everyday, it’s nothing special. Besides, there are also millions of people starving, and they would love to have those dishes that “don’t have the right taste and should be thrown away.” I just ff the moments when they cook. LOL.
But there is one thing that puzzles me. Totally. Namely, I don’t get what president Baek is up to. She should be your typical chaebol-mama (It’s a pun! My first Korean pun! Yeah) who terrorizes the world to have her son marry a girl good enough and breaks the necks of people she has a grudge against. Well, the thing is, she doesn’t yell, doesn’t slap peoples faces, doesn’t bribe potential girlfriends to stay away (actually, one girl asked to be bribed – hilarious). But on the other hand, her objectives are the same as mentioned before. I don’t know what to expect. I only know she wants revenge, but she’s so precise and subtle in the execution that it nearly freaks me out.
Other characters are not bad, but not outstanding either. I just happen to like them a lot because of other dramas
I would love to follow Can Love Become Money, but I have to wait for the subs. And wait. And wait…
i am glad that someone else is watching ‘CLBM’… i watched it in chinese sub so i am up to ep 18.. and so sad that it’s ending this week… i wonder why no many people give more love to this drama.. .i totally enjoy it.
I wish I could speak (and read LOL) Chinese. But this drama is nothing if you don’t understand the witty dialogue. So no subs-no love
I am joining in on the love for CLBM.
The emotions are so out there with the OTP, and some of the dialog is simple enough for me to react to the sweetly spoken Korean words without subs.
I just LOVE this show.

I think President Baek is a brilliantly written character. Everyone else is pretty typical but she is complex and sometimes doesn’t really seem evil. Her smile is so automatic and bright. lol.
With FOTG, I’m now unsure….has Do Yun taken over the role of ‘main lead’. I honestly don’t mind but it’d be a first for me to see the girl end up with the 2nd lead.

. I kind of love Mom Baek — evil, but kind of funny evil, the way she so relishes being so. Loved the way she always put down the fake IJ. I kept watching even though FOTG was schizo– food porn and romance, then makjang, fp&r, then mj, then too much mj. I got really frustrated and stopped watching ’cause of the wimpiness of the female lead — actually really the writer’s wimpiness. I had switched to DY, but strongly suspect there will be a crapola end, so don’t want to spend additional hours I could “invest” in more worthy activites — like maybe QIM

I started FOTG because unlike you I’m always into the food porn Kdramas (JIP one of my first ones) and also think Joo Sang Wook and Lee Sang Woo not bad on the eyes
Her wimpiness was also getting to me but then in the later episodes she became strong and started talking back and started wearing a haughty expression and basically got a backbone. I loved that the writers did that because the tragically tragic female lead is getting a out of style.
Hi Arhazivory- I saw that and thought “finally”, but she is still victimized — what about the Arirang woman chef who needs a frying pan upside her head? But by wimpiness, I’m really referring to her not going for DY. I was totally rooting for him — esp after he knowingly ate the mushrooms! After the poisoning and paralysis (that phrase alone exemplifies mj), I switched to reading the recaps once a week. It’s now up to ep 26 of a 32 ep drama (that length really gave me pause initially) and isn’t she still wavering between DY and JH? By the way I thought JSW’s character in Thorn Birds was one of the biggest wussess going, but in FOTG he’s also got another entry for the Wuss Olympics.

But, in FOTG I switched my preference for leading man from JSW to LSW. What got me is even after he knows how bad fake IJ was to JY – he doesn’t do anything to really protect JY. I know it’s Kdrama world, so I don’t expect a police report or even a mental facility commitment — but jeez, he still meets with fake IJ to comfort her?

Actually, there was an episode of Hose with a Korean family. The thing was, their son was in a realtionship with an older woman and they both were into SM stuff (sounds weird, doesn’t it). The parents cut off any contact with their child and refused to take a life saving decision. So House threatened to tell about their family relationships in all the local beauty salons and so he got them to sign the documents needed. Hypocrisy exposed and defeated

Looks like nobody has talked about a little drama called ‘Can Love become Money’ starred the awesome Vampire prosecutor.. I really enjoy it.. it’s finale this week so i am really looking forward to it.

Hey, chingus! I’m here, a little bleary eyed and it’s JoAnne and Deeno and Raine’s fault I think. Where it started is a little blurry. They’ve got me watching Autumn’s Concerto, my first Tdrama. It’s really beautifully shot, very melo, but different mahkjongy stuff than most Kdramas. But, it’s like 22 eps, and I swore I wasn’t gonna get sucked into some long thing ever again (see ATK, although this is VASTLY better).
I’ve been limiting myself to airing dramas because then I have no choice but to stop and wait for next week. Keeps my life more balanced.
BUt I had a cold this week, and therefore insomnia and was bored and they were watching it and tweeting about it and I just couldn’t help myself.
I think I need one of those 12 step programs.
In RL….spent the week with a sick kid, who then gave it to me. Sam got to work at home this week, but that means he works nights, so then I think its OK to stay up all night and watch dramas “with” him (he doesn’t watch, he has headphones on watching Warehouse 13 or something). Then I stayed up last night waiting for them to come home from the midnight Avengers, and then I woke up at SIX AM! I was not happy. Until Ricky reminded me it was OT time, so here I am. Rambly-er than usual and kinda incoherent.
Crazy busy weekend, I hope I survive, considering how tired I am. One of the sisterwives does arts/crafts shows. I’d explain what she makes, but it would take too long and I’m tired. Anyway, there’s one tomorrow, so I’m helping her with that, tonite is the usual Friday nite date night with our BFFs, tomorrow night is something else….i cant remember hmm.. Sunday is Sunday. Not much of a day of rest if you’re Mormon, lol. Not that I don’t like it, but the whole “day of rest” thing has always made me laugh.
Yeah… Autumn’s Concerto is strangely addicting… I likethe characters and they are more complex then normal.

Yep. I love my Sundays, cuz it’s just my faith and my family. But, since we dont have a paid clergy, everyone has “stuff” to do. I’m the organist, which is a piece of cake for me, but Sam teaches Sunday School to teenagers (he’d rather teach the 4 yr olds, lol, he says they’re right on his level)
Our church is 30 mins away, and we have 3 hours of meetings, so that makes for a long day. But, we also have a big “family” potluck dinner with our local adopted family/friends and it’s nice to just not think of the real world problems for a day and think about what’s truly important.
I hear ya on the day of rest, my hubby was executive secretary for a while and that was almost all day on Sunday….we those LDS out there, I’ve decided it’s just a day to ‘rest’ from YOUR labors and do the Lord’s work…if that makes sense

Shuk, you are my best friend for mentioning that. I wrote a ranty post on my blog about composers getting neglected. I LOVE the RTP OST. Actually, everytime I post an instrumental, I rant about it and link to the rant so it’s a double dose of ranting. As a studio musician, I can personally say it SUCKS not to be recognized. And then if you actually composed the music? GRRRRR.
I”ve bought a couple of OST albums, and usually the instrumentals are on there too, with credits and everything. I bought Bad Man, cuz the music was awesome (wasn’t crazy about the actual show), I bought Playful Kiss for my daughter, and I have the Capital Scandal OST whih is my fave because it’s kind of 30′s/40′s blues/swing.
Good deal, Shel! I’ve always liked how KDramas have those thematic instrumentals similar to Hollywood movies (love, action, etc), so you get a viceral thrill when they start playing it, even before anything happens.
Of course, my first OST purchase was “Winter Sonata” — I was just listening to it on the ride to the office this morning. I jumped all over the WBDS OST when it first hit the stands, and had to pick up the BVS one mostly for the incidental music that brought so much to the show. But mostly I’ll bypass the entire album purchase and just grab one or two songs from a drama if the tune burrows itself into my ear and refuses to leave.

@Shuk: This is slightly off topic but here goes. My current playlist on my iphone are the OSTs from various dramas, mostly Korean but with a couple of OSTs from taiwanese dramas as well. Anyway, I was listening to the OST from SUFBB and took off earplugs so that a friend of mine could listen. My 3-year old daughter in the back seat decides she wants to listen to. So, I give her the headphones and after a while she keeps on talking about dancing chickens. And I totally don’t know what she is talking about. Until I pulled the earplugs from her and listened to the song. It was the OST from Skip Beat and that particular youtube version included the dancing chickens from the drama. The thing is I had the iphone so she was not actually watching the video … she just associated the song with dancing chickens. I think my daughter will grow up speaking Korean and Mandarin Chinese … LOL.

I actually have about 40 OST’s in my collection, including Japanese, Taiwanese, and, of course, Korean.
I made a CD of all the creepy, dark subtone nonvocal music (like Glory of the City from The City Hunter ) and play it in my car when I’m driving through a thunderstorm or the middle of the night. It’s kinda strange but fun, especially with the windows down and moonroof open.
I also made a love song collection, and one of nothing but pop idol OST music.

It was good. $ 7.99 paperback good, maybe not $ 23.99 hardcover good. I finished it in about 4 hours total.
I wonder how long Qhuinn’s going to angst. It’s been like 27 books already, haha.
It’s still not completely resolved, but [cross fingers] please make it soon. If JR Ward goes for the happy ending, though, I’ll feel bad for Saxton.

oh the male lead is HOT. please go google “Ji Hyun Woo Mr Idol” and you’ll see what i mean. he’s got STUFF under those scholarly robes. not the usual pasty Korean pretty boy, this man. and he plays the guitar and sings too. pretty underrated as an actor, as i’ve discovered. but gosh, the SMILEs. i could go on. and on. and on.
and the wiping of lips would not normally be considered romantic. just that when it’s done by Yoo Inna and Ji Hyun Woo, my toes curl. in a good way. those two, have off-the-charts chemistry.
second lead is cute too. the character is so immaturely bratty. i hope he remains so. i wanna see HeeJin get her petty revenge on him =P but well, my heart is owned by Kim Boong-do. I love how Ji Hyun Woo plays him with this detachment, this degree of otherworldliness, and those bemused smiles at the heroine… i don”t blame her for jumping him in the elevator.
Actually I agree that he is nailing the role really well. I just got distracted by his dark lips when contrasted with hers. I thought male actors do put on lip sticks, like Hang Woo in History of A Salaryman (though that was overdone).
Ji Hyun Woo, the Smile Man. I’ve liked him since Invincible Lee Pyung Kang. He was so cute (this time I don’t mean it as an insult) that it makes me giggle even now when I think about it.

My Xth birthday was Wednesday. I have entered a new decade with more love for the world and life than I have ever felt. I guess I am lucky to be able to say that.
For my Xth birthday, we had a competition for my friends and family to bring 50 of something. We gave away $50 in prizes for the best presentation of 50 somethings. All the guests voted with 10 star stickers – Just like in Dramas! – that they could use all on one, or spread their votes out.
I was amazed at what they came up with, and some of them were very touching.
My daughter won with “50 Things My Mother Taught Me” poster. All those years of ranting and coaching and encouraging and motivating showed up, and some fun ones.

There are a million ways to get around it.” “Different is good.” “How to spell: S-I-N-C-E-R-E-L-Y” “You’re not late till you get there.” “Always wear a slip and earrings” “It’s OK to park on the lawn.” “Share your talents with the world” “Nothing can replace hard work” “Just ignore him. That’s what I do.” (I think that was about my husband or son, or both.)

The little girls, of course, loved the stickers. And we put the teenagers in charge of tallying. My mom gave me a button tin that I have coveted from a long time ago filled with 50 pretty buttons on a ribbon. I cried.

I always feel different than my peers, I love to call it quirkyness but others call it freak. Hell, I don’t care, I’m just unique.
It’s still May but I already have 3 newly wed friends and another two whose going to get married in the summer and at the end of year. They’re still young, I mean we’re in our early and mid twenties, and we’re not financially stable. So I don’t get why they want to make family so soon. Or can make one of the biggest decision in life at such young age. You’ll spent the rest of your life with this guy, and how do you know that he’s the one? what if one day you realize that he’s not the one and that’s not what you want.
I just hope that they’ll be happy and they make the best desicion in life by getting married.
I wanna get married someday, in my late twenties, when I’m mentally ready and financially stable, so that I can support myself and not depend on my husband.

Happy Star Wars Day bourbon! As I was walking on campus today I saw a group of girls dressed up as SW characters mock-fighting with light sabres. Brought a huge smile on my face at the nerdyness of it all:):)
i am LOVING Queen InHyun’s Man like loads of people here. and I’ve discovered a new favourite in Ji Hyun Woo. His smile, oh his eye-smile. *swoons* Everytime he looks at HeeJin with that bemused look on his face, with a crooked smile and crinkly eyes, my knees go weak. and Yoo Inna! I normally can’t stand aeygyo done in squeaky voices, but from her, it’s so natural and I could just watch those two interact all day. So. CUTE. They’ve got chemistry in bucketloads those two. I can’t wait till they start acknowledging their feelings, and the consequences of all those time-travelling start figuring their way into the plot. Time-travel dramas almost never get a happy nor at least satisfactory ending. But goshh, for the sake of our Kim BoongDo and HeeJin-sshi, i hope the writers come up with something good. why is each episode so short and every week so long.

It’s something light to counter some of the heavy stuff on air now. Not much angst yet, and I don’t forsee any makjang. So you should give it a try if that works for you!
ohhh no angst yet. it’s a nice balance of the romcom in the modern period and suspense in the saeguk part, and the masterful way the director scriptwriter and editors string everything together makes everything so amazing to watch. time travelling dramas almost never have happy/satisfactory endings, but i’m waiting to see what the scriptwriter pulls out of his/her bag. Ji Hyun Woo just tweeted a pic of the scripts all the way to episode 12 lined up, praising the scriptwriter for the beauty of it all and how he enjoys reading them. ahhh. i. cannot. wait. i need therapy while waiting for the next episodes.

Has anyone watched tvN’s The Romantic? It’s a reality (matchmaking) show which brings 5 bachelorettes and 5 bachelors (collectively called Romantists) together in a foreign country for a 10 day journey. During that time, they go on dates which are decided by “preference shuffles” which are based on individual tastes. The 1st season just ended last Saturday with a total of 12 episodes. Each episode is around 45 minutes so it’s a breezy watch. The first 6 episodes take place in Croatia (Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik) with the first group of 10 Romantists. The other 6 episodes take place in Turkey (Istanbul, Cappadocia) with a second group of 10 Romantists. The show is made by capable and seasoned folks previously responsible for 1 Night 2 Days and Qualifications of Men so the production values are pretty top-notch. They even got Lee Seung Gi to narrate the Croatia episodes and Yoo Hee Yeol to narrate the Turkey episodes. The cinematography is amazing, the scenery is beautiful, even the music is fresh and trendy. And it sure doesn’t hurt that on the whole, all of the Romantists are a bunch of attractive and refreshing young people in their 20s and 30s. For the Croatia episodes, there’s a Sandara Park look-a-like, a Kim Tae Hee look-a-like, a Lee Min Jung look-a-like, a Ji Sung look-a-like, a Jung Seok Won look-a-like. For the Turkey episodes, there’s a SNSD Yuri look-a-like, a f(x) Luna look-a-like, a Lee Hyun Jin look-a-like, a 2PM Woo Young look-a-like.
The show has even released its own OST.

I knew there was something I kind of forgot– it’s Friday, and Friday’s for OT! Happy weekend, DBers!
Nothing much for me on the K-drama front except watching Dream High on local dub, and reading the DB recaps and waiting eagerly for the next installments.
On the local drama front, I’m really hooked on Princess and I… the heroine’s Mikay, a kidnapped princess from a kingdom who was adopted in the Philippines as a baby, and then wins a package tour to her dad’s kingdom when she grows up. She’s got three guys in her life– Kiko, who’s this geeky, earnest type (I bet he doesn’t get the girl, he’s like Bae Soo Bin that way); Gino, the rich kid heartbreaker (shades of Gu Jun Pyo in this one, especially the attention he gets at school, only he’s more aware, especially of his family situation, than Jun Pyo was); and Jao, the aloof princeling the king is eyeing as successor, not knowing Jao’s scheming mama was responsible for the queen’s death and Mikay’s disappearance (I get flashes of Lee Sun Joon earnestness in this one– his mom raised him to be king, and he’s been buried in his studies and his princely arrogance until he met Mikay). There are scenes that also remind me of K-dramas– Jao piggybacks Mikay up a mountain, for instance, and Gino throws Mikay into a fountain because the hot dog costume she was wearing had caught on fire due to a stray cigarette. Three weeks into the drama so far, and I still want more; I hope it just gets better.
That sounds really really cool…. is it as good as a k drama?
K-dramas have raised my standards a lot, but I like it so far. I like that Mikay is trying to be a good daughter to the people who adopted her, but can stand up for herself– she reminds me of those bubbly K-drama heroines who work for their living (like Park Ha) and isn’t ashamed of it. I also like that although I’m pretty sure JaoMik is the OTP, there’s enough doubt in there for GinMik, because both guys have chemistry with her.. both Enrique Gil (Jao) and Daniel Padilla (Gino) are cute and adorable. I’m just standing on JaoMik as the OTP because he’s the prince, LOL. And there’s a nice touch of irony in there that Mikay’s adopted mom is training her daughters to be beauty queens and telling Mikay she’s not pretty enough to be a beauty queen, when Mikay is a real princess and will be queen if her real identity is discovered.
What I hate is that our dramas air every day on weekdays for a shorter time, so it’s kind of a pain to recap.

So, a few weeks back I made my brother watch the best scenes of TK2H. Aaaaaand, he LIKED it a lot!! hahaaa. Felt so glorious since he pesters and annoys me with my K-drama preference over the Bollywood and Hollywood stuff.
He was enthralled with the Jae-ha and Bong-gu showdown in Ep 10 & 12, Shi Kyung and Bong-gu showdown in Ep 14, and couldn’t take his eyes off of Ji-Won unnie!! lulz

I have been compulsively live tweeting my involuntary exclamations while watching, much to the amusement of Deeno, Ricky, and Shel.
I have apologized twice to My Beloved, because he no longer stars in my favorite drama. Never fear, though: even though Van Ness Wu grew on me MASSIVELY in about 4 episodes worth of time – I went from ‘he is NOT good looking’ to ‘omg he smiled look at that smile babble babble babble’ – he cannot replace My Beloved. Then again, I have yet to see his other work, beyond a few music videos. That will change.

I have to admit I’m glad you’re almost done with AC. Because as i said before thanks to you and Shel, I ended up watching the ending episodes. No way I was going to watch all the melo in that drama, my heart can’t take it. But at least now, I’m not so curious about who are you talking about each time you comment.

Gardener was adorable. I looked him up, but he hasn’t really done anything since if I recall. I thought his acting was really strong considering it was his first role (if I recall correctly).

DF has GLLMK in I Really Really Like You. He plays a Secret Service Agent/Play Boy. He’s REALLY young, and adorable. I’ve only seen the first episode though because I fell into the Wu-niverse.
He is adorable in that one, I’ve seen it all. Twice.
Mixed-up Investigative Agency is my favorite k-drama ever. It always makes me happy, I rewatch it when I’m feeling bla. My favorite are episode 4 where they go to the beach and the Chusok episode. I think I would love it even without Lee Min-ki, and thats saying a lot.I also recommend Taerung National Village for more Min-ki goodness.

I had to get my Polish passport renewed in New York so took this opportunity to visit Koreatown and fill up on Korean goodies. Picked up some paper face masks at the Face Shop, and just had some seafood bibimbap. It came with tons offside dishes – couldn’t finish them all. Now I’m off to Paris Baguette to get some lovely pastries for mom. It’s almost like being in Korea! Now that I have my passport, maybe I’ll go!
Soju, I’m gonna be in NYC July 13th-15th and would love some recommendations in Korea Town. Because I am SO going, and I’ll be on my own so I can take as much time as I want.

Kiddo is in a seminar from 10 to 5 each day. http://www.theschoolofstyle.com/ and since I haven’t been in the city for a while and she loves to hang out there, I’m tagging along. We’ll take the train in on Friday – we’re staying same gen area as the seminar – and she wants to show me ‘her’ China town. Apparently she has delved quite a bit more deeply than that one street you go down with all the markets, LOL. There’s an indoor mall somewhere she loves…and then while she’s tied up, I’ll probably have a book and some knitting and sit in a park and people watch, but I do hope to get to K-town. I am pretty sure I’ve been through it in the past but it was before Kdrama took control so I just noticed – hey these signs are …this is not Chinese…hmm. It was somewhere in the west 30s I think, and I’m staying in the west 20s.

So happy that you will get to visit New York. I’ve only been to Koreatown twice, so my experience is limited. As far as I know, K-town is just a few blocks of 32nd Street between Penn Station and Madison Ave. Here are my recommendations:
The Face Shop – This is located next to the Koryo bookstore. The poster on the door (when it’s closed) is a picture of a cute k-pop idol (Kim Huyng-joong?) holding a bottle of BB cream. This somehow epitomizes the Face Shop experience for me. I go there for the paper face masks of which there are countless varieties. They go from $1.50 to $7 and if you buy 10 you get one free.
Koryo bookstore – they have posters and lots of very pricey Korean books, CDs, DVDs and magazines. You can get an issue of Men’s Health with your favorite abstastic actor sporting a killer smile for $20. My favorite is a little DVD bootleggery in the back where you can pick up a DVD with English subs for $7. I found a nice copy of Antique Bakery which I couldn’t find anywhere on the Internet.
Other – there is a cute store next door with hair accessories and umbrellas. I think it’s called Shine. A few doors down towards Madison is a small store with cell phone accessories. I picked up a great orange wallet for my iPhone and the guy who worked there was very good looking.
Food – As ahjummabunny mentioned, the Korean food is questionable. The best I had is at Franchia Cafe at 12 Park Avenue. Not in Koreatown proper but a short walk. Their stone bowl bibimbap was really great, but they didn’t give a lot of banchan – still managed to leave full, though. The decor is really nice, too. Yesterday I ate at Miss Korea but then I got a stomach ache, so I don’t recommend. They gave so many side dishes that I was wondering where the bibimbap I ordered was going to fit. Maybe you’ll discover a great place and can post about it.
Paris Baguette – I got a beautiful green tea and blueberry cake for my Mom, and it came in the blue box you see in dramas. It was very light and tasty. They have single-serving versions of their cakes so you can try different ones. Everyone who worked there was very tall, and one guy reminded me of Kim Jae-wook in Coffee Prince.

I had heard about Koryo and definitely want to check it out. Man…I how KJW look alike is still at PB because. Well, that needs no explanation. He’s incredibly beautiful. There are some men who you just – it’s like statues, or paintings. You don’t feel about them as a whole person, they are something pure and different and ‘other’ – just an object of beauty. It’s not objectifying in the sexual sense…it’s more like – how you feel when you step into a beautiful, famous church, or see a painting you’ve only ever seen in books. You’re looking at something special. That’s how I feel about how he looks.

I really like how you express your appreciation for beautiful men. I think I remember you saying something similar about
Lee Min-ki and I totally agree. Reminds me of their scenes together in Dal jas Spring where they were having a who is prettier competition. Just wanted to clarify that the guy wasn’t as beautiful as Kim Jae-wook – because if he were he would be in dramas and not working at Paris Baguette – but somehow his general look and mannerisms reminded me of Waffle Sunki.
I think it was in gourmet that they said that all those korea town restaurants are owned by japanese people! I recently ate there and not only was it over priced but it wasn’t very tasty at all. It is possible I chose the wrong place, but Union Street in Flushing is better.
Reminded of my of my little California town, lol. We went to our favorite Japanese sushi place and noticed for the first time that the owners were speaking Chinese. Which was really amusing because the Chinese place right across the street is owned by Koreans. We haven’t ventured to the Korean BBQ restaurant up the street (lack of funds…we’ve eaten at Korean BBQ places before and at least here in CA, they aren’t cheap). JoAnne suspects it’s run by a German guy.
There are also Filipino, Thai and Vietnamese restaurants here. For a town of 20,000, that’s pretty good. I was driving down the main street in Seaside next door and noticed, in a row, Sarita’s Mexican, Taste of Vietnam, Hankook Market, a Middle Eastern market and a place that sells Indian saris. All in the same strip mall. I love this place!

Czesc Kopytko! I was going to comment on your earlier post where you mentioned the long weekend in Poland. I had an inkling you were Polish from your handle, but it’s great to meet another person from my own country who is into k-drama. Visiting Korea is a long-term project but I’m hoping to get there in the next two years. I wonder if Dorotka who posts here occasionally is also Polish.

Started watching the jdrama Bloody Monday. Enjoy the plot so far, but keep on getting annoyed by the Imagine Spot (which features a falcon flying through a building) which pops up every time our genius hacker hero does his thing. Computer science does not work that way.
Also started watching Queen Inhyun’s Man and I’m not speedily zipping through all the subbed eps–why isn’t this being subbed more quickly?!
In other news, finally got a practice mute for my violin so I can practice in my apartment. I’m thinking of trying to arrange some kpop/kdrama pieces.

RTP: Man-Bo figured out the mechanism of the zipper immediately watching Park Ha demonstrate
QIM: Bung Do figured it out after stealing a jacket and watching the cast members.

QIM: BD almost immediately looked for a library to see what it said about the past.
RTP: The only one that did that is Park Ha, and we still don’t know what she saw.

QIM vs RTP: The elevator…oh god, the elevator.

Both are awesome, though, just different.
BD is pure intellect, and doesn’t panic when caught in a strange situation.
It’s probably the same for Green Ahjussi in RTP, but, since he mostly defers to the prince, you don’t get to see that intellectual spark too much.
Oh man, I remembered the zippers and the library, but I totally forgot about the elevator. *devolves into fit of giggles all over again* Thanks for reminding me of that!
Yep, there are a lot of comparisons to be made between the two shows, but right now I’m liking QIHM the best. I enjoy RP for the fish-out-of-water stuff mostly, but I’m enjoying QIHM on all levels – especially the characters. I could go on all night about how much I love Boong-do.
For one more comparison, though, I think Boong-do has the edge when we’re comparing him to Man-bo because while they both of brains to spare, Boong-do’s also got a little more innate dignity and warmth. Man-bo’s got a lot of heart, yes, but he doesn’t exactly inspire feelings of strength and security, which I think Boong-do does.
Still, like you said, both shows are fun in their own ways. It’s amazing how two seemingly identical stories can be so drastically different. I love it.

Question: What is Noron and Soron exactly?
Is it just two political ideological groups or does it have anything to do with where your ancestors are from. I used to think that it’s just political factions (like left and right), but then in many sageuks we see that if someone is born to a Noron, they automatically become a Noron, so it must be more than just ideological group right? Now this might be a stupid question but does it have anything to do with now South and North Korea? For some reason, I associate Norons with the North and Sorons with the South, it might just be the initial alphabets. lol.
