Happy Friday OTers, Beaners, hope you had wonderful week.
Mine is damn busy, how about yours?

Start my week well with the-so-normal activity then wednesday night come, and start the crazy and camping girl. at day, normal worker, at night lurking everywhere, finding info, recaps, everything include spoilers (to which i regret, its supposed ‘only recaps of current episode’ and ‘discussion of past episode’ not the ‘pain to wait all week with tainted mind’

At first, i felt guilty dropping RTP (not so with the recap, since i’m in camping team), but now i know the exact reason, not because there are any other better drama, not jung yumi, lee taesung and the gank, and definitely not because QIHM, or the technical one like slow internet connection, it just because one simple thing called bad writing, oh well, not that simple actually, because this drama start off amazing, then lost its already small steam. the small and simple thing, probably is my hunch, i sense something was off trough JB wonderful as usual recaps, then next thing i know, i stop at episode 3. when things seem get better, then again, i felt something bad is coming, so until now, not yet resuming watching RTP.

    Can i make a confession?
at first, not hate just little bit resent and sometimes i felt that GF not that great (if you compare it to JB), that i start to wonder, why GF is invading JB site?? share goddess title with JB and so on. but, became regular (silent) visitor, i finally came to my sense, that GF is indeed good, nope, she is deserved to the goddess title. since the beginning, nothing wrong with her. she is indeed one of the goddesses (along with JB) of this site.
well, better late than never, right?

i also want to express alot of thanks for her wonderful K2H recaps and other great articles.
i hope JB doesnt mind that i (start now) share my faith. (hope JB isn’t Whiny kid like ‘fate’). anyway, i love you both (in normal ways like fans to idol not girl to girl), and will always have faith in you both even if you girls didn’t recap faith (to which little bit impossible).

Happy Friday, Dramabeans ‘n’ Weenies! I hope you all had a nice week enjoying your Spring and/or Fall weather (where applicable)…

I’m still playing Hamster on a Wheel, and don’t have much to report due to all the trial work hanging over my head. Haven’t watched anything; haven’t listened to anything substantive; lather, rinse, repeat. Two more weeks of this, so apologies for being a mega-cranky-pants beeyotch right now. :)

But I was able to score tickets to GooglePop (© @Shel) next Monday night at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. It’s the KPop Event of the Decade; how can I not be there, ne? I’m wondering how MBC is going to handle all those groups with an 11:00 PM curfew — two or three songs each artist at the most (Super Junior and TVXQ will probably get at least four themselves)? Regardless, this should be interesting in a sociological sort-of way, and I’ll try to StealthTweet as much as I can until the Camera Jerks come around and yell at me. :D

That’s all I’ve got, so I’ve got to get back to schlepping docs to the courthouse. Have a great day and I’ll seeyas later!

(Ivoire, if you see this, I’ve got an extra ticket with your name on it — you can find me through Twitter or Tumblr if you’d like to join me!)

Cherkell! Happy Friday! I wish I could be there. It sounds like a fun concert!

      • 2.1.1 cherkell

Shukie! Morning dahling! I so want to get you East Coasters out here eventually — I’m sure another Major Event will eventually happen that will Make. It. So. :D

        • 2.1.1.1 Shukmeister

          You got it…I’ll be ready.

    • 2.2 Leaf

WOW!!! Have an awesome time!!!! It will be incrediable!!! <3

Definately wish I could be there!!!

    • 2.3 shel

Sam’s thinking I should take Meghan, so we may change our minds. Don’t hold the tickets if someone wants them, but I may just see how I feel on Monday morning.

      • 2.3.1 cherkell

You got it, sweetie — I’ll be online pretty much all weekend working on trial briefs, so keep me posted!

    • 2.4 zgznoona

      Happy OT!!!!!
You know I’m counting on you two to keep me updated about the concert ;)

    • 2.5 skelly

I’ll make sure to open all my windows Monday night – I live in Palo Alto, and we usually get to hear whatever is playing at Shoreline fairly well…

    • 2.6 Sunny

Ohh you’re going to the concert? I’m so jealous haha!

    • 2.7 Ivoire

      Good morning Cherkell (and everyone),
Thank you for thinking of me. I have to see how my Monday is shaping up, and I am touched that you thought of getting a ticket for me. I hope your day is going well, even though it is a busy one.

      • 2.7.1 Ivoire

        I have three questions:
1–@ Cherkell: Is the concert really going on until 11:00pm on Monday? (Just wondering so I can figure out how to get back home if I go. I currently don’t have a car).

2–What are the differences between softsubs and hardsubs? I was watching something (I think it might have been QIM) and they advised to wait for hardsubs and that only softsubs were available at the time I watched.

3–Why did Yi Tak or Yi tag (the Prince) became embarrassed when Yoo Sool told him Good Bam (and Viki translated Bam as night) at the fishing store. I thought Yoo sool was just wishing him a good evening and to have a good time, but the Prince’s reaction made me question that. What did I miss? Thanks for helping me figure this out.

4–Actually I have a 4th question: when in two episodes ago (I think) Shi Kyung rejected the princess romantically, I originally thought that theirs was a love that they would not get to experience, even though we knew that they were in love with each other. I then saw on the preview of episode 18 that SK kissed the princess and I haven’t watched episodes 17 and 18 yet of the “the king” so I don’t know if Sk and the princess had a conversation about that. I wondered why it was that he rejected her before. I started having scenarii in my head: could he be that he wanted to focus on his job (security of the king and the royal family) and not be distracted by the princess? Could it be that he didn’t believe that he could date and possibly marry the princess (not same social class, status, etc…). Could it be that he thought that he wasn’t good enough for her and not worthy of her affections? Could it be that he couldn’t handle it (emotionally and otherwise) when she confessed to him and clearly wanted to spend more time with him?
What do you guys think his motivations might have been at the time? I am asking because with the kiss I saw, it was then made obvious that he let her know that he liked her (or in his case that he actually loves her) too. Does that change the dynamics in their relationship?

        • 2.7.1.1 Noelle

He didn’t think he was good enough or worthy as well as he didn’t think her feelings were honest. Like maybe she was seeing him as a shiny new toy and nothing more or that she’s confused her feelings with something else.

          • 2.7.1.1.1 JoAnne

That, exactly. He is aware of the ‘class’ difference, and her life previous to the accident was quite carefree. He thought she only was thinking of him because of the situation, and that she would lose interest.

        • 2.7.1.2 cherkell

Iv, I can get you there and back, so don’t worry too much about that. Think about it! :D

The show itself is going to be live-streaming on YouTube, but I bet the servers in San Bruno fry themselves like they did when they streamed the 2nd SM concert in NYC. EPIC FAIL.

          • 2.7.1.2.1 Ivoire

            Cherkell,
Do you think you could really pick me up and bring me back? Because that would really be wonderful and very helpful. I would have to give you my address, so please let me know where I could do that safely. Wow, I was considering not going, but you might help me change my mind. It would be fun to be at that concert, especially because the tickets are free :-)

          • 2.7.1.2.2 Ivoire

So, I am still wondering, is the concert over at 9:00pm or at 11:00pm? It would help to know when I am coming back home, so I can let my friend know, out of courtesy. Thanks!

          • 2.7.1.2.3 cherkell

The venue stops the music at 11:00 PM, but by the time we get back to the car and to your place would prolly be closer to midnight. Email me back at cherkell at aol dot com. We’ll talk offline and get all the particulars sewed up!

          • 2.7.1.2.4 Ivoire

Good morning Cherkell, and thank you for the added info. I will email you so we can figure the rest out. I hope you will enjoy what looks to be like a gorgeous day, so far.

          • 2.7.1.2.5 Ivoire

@ Cherkell, I just sent you an email, just so you know.

        • 2.7.1.3 Rainerust

As far as I can tell, in a very layman fashion, soft subs are not made to be part of the video aka the video and the subs are two different things and you have to run both at the same time. This means you have to download the right soft subs for the right videos otherwise the timings will be out of sync. You don’t have to worry about that for hard subs, cos they’re part of the video. Hope that makes sense??

          • 2.7.1.3.1 cherkell

To further expound on this… let’s say you have a video file captured at one speed (450p/720p/etc.) — the softsub file you’ve DLd needs to be at the same speed as your video file or else the subs won’t match up with the picture (e.g., 450p subs for a 450p video file). Then you need to make sure you have the correct files in one separate folder (video and sub) so they find each other and run properly. I’ve hardsubbed quite a few dramas in my lifetime; sometimes it only takes an hour, sometimes it takes days depending on how complex the process.

Hard subs means that someone else has done the ‘heavy lifting’ and physically attached the subs to the video file itself and there’s only one item to deal with. So if you can wait until an episode is ‘hard-subbed’ (I know, it’s hard!!!) to watch, you won’t have to go through all that muss and fuss! :)

          • 2.7.1.3.2 thejawavillager

really?i thought soft subs were just a separate subtitle file. Hard subbing is when you permanently attach the subtitles onto a video, hence making them an inseparable part of the video.

          • 2.7.1.3.3 cherkell

Soft subs are a separate file, usually with an .srt extension at the end. Some soft subs may also pull us as a .txt file — all you need to do is change the extension to .srt, and all will be groovy.

The video files are usually captured as an .avi or .mp4 or .mkv, so just as long as you have both of them together in a separate folder, they meet and fall in love and have a baby that is your soft-subbed video to watch. Voila! :)

          • 2.7.1.3.4 Ivoire

Just wanted to say “thank you!” ladies, your detailed explanations have helped a lot.

    • 2.8 hapacalgirl

      Happy Friday Cherkell!

LUCKY! haha. I really wanted to attend that concert but I 1) no longer live up in the bay area (why couldn’t these concerts happen when I was going to college up there?!) and can’t make a trip to the bay any time soon and 2) am attending a 4 day digestive diseases conference from tomorrow till Tuesday night.

My life consists of Lab->Home->Sleep repeat, so minimal drama watching for me at least till I get past my NIH deadline at the end of June so I will join you in the cranky pantsness.

Hope you have fun at the concert!

    • 2.9 kewbie

Lucky lucky! Have tons of fun!

    • 2.10 cv

Happy OT Cherkell and all! ^^

Have fun at the concert. Maybe I”ll be on twitter and wait for ur up to date on it. :D

    • 2.11 Raine

      OMG sounds like a BLAST!

    • 2.12 thejawavillager

OMG… so so jealous. YOU MUST MUST STEALTH TWEET. Have fun!

    Eun Shi-kyung….
Never thought a second lead can make me cry this much.

    • 3.1 shel

      Best 2nd lead EVER.

      • 3.1.1 JoAnne

In the history of the entire WORLD.

      • 3.1.2 zgznoona

        He is so awesome.
I’m just worried about next week

        • 3.1.2.1 JoAnne

I told Shel if they kill him I might quit KDrama.

          • 3.1.2.1.1 shel

I”m right there with you, sister.

          • 3.1.2.1.2 shel

Did you read DB’s recap? Actually just the comments….interesting thoughts about the battle for Shi Kyung.

          • 3.1.2.1.3 Amberscube

It’s going be WAR if they kill him.

          • 3.1.2.1.4 maeumi

If for whatever reason they kill him I’m gonna catch the next flight to SK and hunt down every single one of them in the production team. They’re better be prepared for my wrath if they’re going down that road.

          • 3.1.2.1.5 MojoJojo

I will too, actually i’m pretty sure i’ll go into coma from the shock. I NEED this man to have a happy ending. Right now its like there isn’t any primary and secondary couples, they both have grown to have equal weight. So listen up writers, give this man puppies, cupcakes, and the love of his life or else!

        • 3.1.2.2 zgznoona

They can’t kill him. That would be the worse thing they can do in a drama. It’ll be right there with the ending of Sang Doo and WBDS in the book of the worse endings ever.

          • 3.1.2.2.1 Saima

I too think SK will be fine!! The writers have been awesome thus far and mayhap I’m crazy for pinning all my hopes on their abilities! If anything happens to any of my 4 leads….i’ll be hate tweeting on MBC & writing hate letters to the writers! hehee

I’m more worried for HA returning with that injured foot, actually!

          • 3.1.2.2.2 JoAnne

@zgznoona – I think this would traumatize me as badly as My Beloved’s death did too…

@Shel – yes, I LOVED that she said Shi Kyung is the embodiment of the Korean people. Perfect way to sum it up.

          • 3.1.2.2.3 Ivoire

Sorry JoAnne, but I am confused. I thought your Beloved was Rain (the singer/actor/model, Bi Rain). Am I wrong? Is he dead? I don’t think so, because I would have read about it, right? Or are you talking about a beloved in a drama? I just became a little alarmed when I saw your response. Just thought I would ask…

          • 3.1.2.2.4 zgznoona

@Ivorie, JoAnne is talking about the death of Rain’s character in Sang Doo

          • 3.1.2.2.5 Ivoire

*wipes forehead*, phew!!!! Thanks zgznoona. I didn’t think it was Rain, but then I only know one Beloved for JoAnne, so I wasn’t sure what to make of it :-)

    • 3.2 Arhazivory

      Best. Ever. <3

    • 3.3 kewbie

      Shi-kyung = Awesome sauce x 100

    • 3.4 Raine

Ditto. I was totally tweetcasting during ep 17 and 18. What a glorious glorious actor/character. I loved JJS in WU because I’m originally a theatre junkie. It’s like in my blood. My mother’s side is New York Jews. We do theatre. And then you see the guy as a soldier and can’t imagine him as Byung-gun at ALL. If he wasn’t popular before, JJS is going to be the THANG now, for serious. Not to mention his vocal prowess. Not just that its pretty, but that he’s REALLY a good singer. Nice voice and GREAT technique. That tickles me pink…no red. I love the vocal control, the thought behind the phrasing, diction, dynamic work, omg, musicgasm.

But ya, he and Jae-shin basically made me sob both episodes. And Lee Yoon-ji. I loved her in DH and in Goong, and thought she was GORGEOUS, but here she really shows how strong of an actress she is. The whole cast is so solid. It’s rather incredible. I love that.

Which just made me realize somethign about Rooftop Prince. The reason I loved it most was the chemistry between Team Joseon and Park Ha. These later episodes really don’t have them together, therefore there’s no chemistry to see. That and the writing. Why do I still love it? CAUSE I LOVE THE PANDA!

      • 3.4.1 dee

        Panda with glasses.. :)

  4. Kiara

    Kim Boong Do <3<3<3<3<3.

    • 4.1 shel

I’m with you on that one. That actor was the only reason I stuck with the trainwreck that was ATK. I’m SO glad to see him in something worthy of him. He’s adorable.

      • 4.1.1 Saa

Gawd, no matter what anyone says, I really want to watch ATK… I’m scared as heck to start it, but…I NEED MY JI HYUN WOO FIX, AND WHAT BETTER WAY TO GET IT THAN IN A 50+ EPISODE DRAMA, LOLLL.

        • 4.1.1.1 skelly

The character he plays in ATK is weak, gloomy, and clueless. The anti-BoongDo. Even though she is the most horrible person on the planet, he goes back to his two-timing ex-girlfriend because his mommy tells him to. In spite of the fact that this woman makes a living hell out of the life of the woman he supposedly loves – right in front of him. The only good thing about this show is his cute interactions with the boy, and his early attempts at romance. But by the end of the show you want to rip his eyes out of their sockets. Really – never met a “hero” I hated so much.

          • 4.1.1.1.1 Saa

Krap. I thought it was the main girl that was annoying, LOL. Okay, my shallowness won’t allow me to watch a drama for an actor who has a krappy character no matter how obsessed I am. xP

    • 4.2 starlight

i one millionth that sentiment :)

    • 4.3 Allie

Love his character on the show!

    • 4.4 Hang-ah

I’m so wrapped up in the world of The King 2 Hearts that at first glance, I thought you typed “Kim Bong Gu <3 <3" and I was like WHA!!?! What's with the Kim Bong-gu love?! I mean, he's played by a great actor, but…I thought I'd entered the twilight zone where regular Dramabeans was replaced by Evil Dramabeans, populated entirely by little Bon Bon clones.

      • 4.4.1 Saa

        Ohmahgawd, LMAO.
I can already imagine a whole mob of DBers turned evil with red eyes and pointy pitchforks, chanting “KIM BONG GU<3 KIM BONG GU<3 KIMMMM BONGGGG GUUUU<333" Bwahahahahaa!!

    • 5.3 Arhazivory

So many of us have fallen in love with it. Me too. M3 My second crack after K2H

      • 5.3.1 slfowie

K2H and QIHM are the two shows that make Wednesdays and Thursdays bearable. I love how they have tackled time travelling, and the heroine who does not mind using the hero’s relative lack of modern/present time knowledge to steal kisses. This who in my humble opinion deals with time travel the right way, Boong Do’s movement through time is awesome. The writers make sure that both the story line is given equally importance unlike some other show. Hope Faith does as good job as this one coz I am not watching a mindless time travlell drama Lee min Ho(t) or not..(.. no probably will but still….)

Does anyone else’s brain get a short circuit when Boong Do smiles?

        • 5.3.1.1 Saa

I turn to goo every freakin’ time that guy smiles. Or looks at Hee Jin. Or speaks. Or appears on screen. Or is even mentioned.
I ASSURE YOU I DID NOT SAVE 100+ PICTURES OF HIM ON MY IPOD, LOLLLL.

    • 5.4 skelly

Yep – same here. For some reason, I can wait until K2H is complete to watch that show (keeping track of its progress through recaps) and I’ve dropped RTP since stupid began running through the show like a bad cold, but Thursday night finds me watching the raws of QIHM, even though I can’t understand a thing…because it’s pretty and appealing and sweet and funny and there isn’t a single character, even Minister Min and the minions, that I don’t like.

  6. Llamaesque

So after almost a year of watching Korean dramas, I finally lost a personal battle with myself and wrote Kdrama fan fiction: it’s an epilogue of sorts to Coffee Prince. This has made me want to read more K-drama fanfic, but I haven’t been able to find much out there. (American TV shows that have literally not aired in my lifetime have more stories on fanfiction.net than all of Korean drama, as far as I can tell.) Does anyone have suggestions/recs for good sources of Kdrama fanfic?

    • 6.1 Leaf

I wrote Korean Fanfic!!! There was quite a lot of Boys over Flowers fanfic when I was writing it!!! But… I haven’t written anything for years… I try and keep up with some of the stories though!

      I stick with Fanfiction.net personally…

      • 6.1.1 Shukmeister

Never been there, Leaf. Any good?

        • 6.1.1.1 Arhazivory

Biggest fanfic site ever I’m sure. Its actually the only fanfic site I really visit. Hmmm…been a while though.

        • 6.1.1.2 Leaf

Hmm…. it’s acceptable. So of the stories are enjoyable enough. Some are actually very good as well.
It’s fun if you have some free time and feel like reading!

      • 6.1.2 Llamaesque

Leaf: What name did you write under? I’d love to read your work! Boys over Flowers is the most fanfic-able Korean drama ever, I think—so many fun characters, so many loose ends. If I had been watching Kdrama back then, I’m sure I would have been writing about it, too. Teehee…not that the world needs the Jan Di/Ji Hoo/Jun Pyo smutfest I would have been tempted to write.

        • 6.1.2.1 Leaf

haha Leaf900. Because that is (99% of the time) basically the only name I use… except if they are doing something stupid! Then it wasn’t me ;)

      • 6.1.3 cv

LOL I’ve always wanted to know what happened afterward. :P thanks for the site. I”m going to go see what awsome fanfics of this drama is out there.

    • 6.2 Mystisith

I know asianfanfics.com. A ton of stories, but you have to skim to find the good ones…

    • 6.3 Shukmeister

Llama!! Read your fan-fic and loved it! It’s always interesting to be able to see the characters past the final happy ending ep. Keep up the good work!

  7. Shukmeister

    Happy OT, chingus!

Watched the last two epis of RTP and QIHM, and my loyalty has switched to Boong Do!!

Watched the first two epis of Hero from OCN and really really liking the dark tones of the story arc.

Read the first 5 books of Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changling series.

Last week I completed 10,000 words of the fan fic, but I took a hiatus this week to gear up for the final arc and ending by next week or so.

    Let the OT Games begin!

    • 7.1 zgznoona

      Happy OT Suk!!!
I haven’t read the last few chapters, I’ll probably do next week. I hate cliffhangers, as I told you before. Then I need to finish things in one go when possible (movies, books, dramas…)

      • 7.1.1 Shukmeister

It’s not done yet, Z, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it ain’t the train. lol

        • 7.1.1.1 zgznoona

          Glad to hear that :)

    • 7.2 Rashell

OH…I love Nalini Singh!! If you enjoy the Psy-Changling series you should try her Guild Hunter series too. Sooo Goood!

      • 7.2.1 Shukmeister

This came as a recommendation from an OT screenfriend, after I whined about the ho-hum’edness of the JR Ward and Sherrilyn Kenyon series now in their, like, 20th books.

So far they’ve been burning up my Kindle!

    • 7.3 whimsyful

Happy OT Shuk! What’s Psy-Changling about?

      • 7.3.1 Shukmeister

        Whimsy!
Three races: human, changling (species-specific shapechangers), and psy (no emotion cerebral types), interacting in an alternative California.
Romance series, but with power struggles and bad guys. 13 books total that I know of for that series.
cv recommended them about 2 OT’s ago.

I thought California was alternative anyway, lol. So in an alternative California, are they conservatives? Ha! (I can only say that cuz I live here, lol)

          • 7.3.1.1.1 Shukmeister

Yeah, but they’re considered the weirdos…wait…I guess literature DOES reflect the times.

            ;-)

      • 7.3.2 Rashell

I’m not Shuk, but I hope you don’t mind if I answer. In the world that Nalini has created there are three species of people. The Psy – who have different mind powers like telepathy, telekinisis, etc. The Changlings – who are part animal and part man. And Humans – who are just human. The Psy consider themselves the elite of society and the do control most of the money. They look down on the other two species. The Psy are also “silent” which means that they have shut themselves off from any emotion. They believe that it has no place in their world, and with some of their delicate mind powers emotion can actually be dangerous for some of them. The Changlings are pretty much opposite. They live in packs according to what species they change into, and they thrive on emotional connection. They have “mates” and once they find their mate they mate for life. In the first book a psy woman is negotiating with a changling pack to build a new apartment complex. She’s a “broken” psy, in that she can’t cut off her emotions, but she has to hide that in order to survive. He’s the alpha of the pack and is immediately drawn to her. He’s started this project to try to find a psy who the changlings believe is kidnapping and killing young changling women.

I don’t know if that makes any sense, but really the series is so good.

        • 7.3.2.1 Shukmeister

Yeah yeah, what she said – lol

          • 7.3.2.1.1 Rashell

You’re explaination was like three sentences, and I write a novel. LOL!

          • 7.3.2.1.2 Shukmeister

Yeah, but yours was more detailed!

        • 7.3.2.2 JoAnne

and now I want to read it.

          • 7.3.2.2.1 shel

Adding to my list. Hopefully starting Insurgent today…

        • 7.3.2.3 Noelle

This sounds awesome! And it takes place in CA? Count me in.

        • 7.3.2.4 cv

LOL This about sums it up! ^^

I also love the guild hunter series. It’s good.

          • 7.3.2.4.1 Shukmeister

There’s the evil temptress. CV – how are you?

    • 7.4 cv

Hi Shuk! Did you like Nalini Singh’s Psy-changling series?

Hero is dark. I like the storyline alot. I need to get back to it though. hehe

Love ur fan fic! can’t wait to read the ending sooon.

      • 7.4.1 Shukmeister

cv – I’m really enjoying the series, durn it! I also have “Insurgent”, but I’m not even glancing at it until I finish this series.

After watching RTP slowly evolve into a train wreck, I got an idea to extend my fanfic with a amnesia arc.

Just when Rickie is ready to pop the question, a clumsy waiter spills the champange, and the waitress with the dessert tray slides and strikes the window, which shatters.
A seagull flies in, dive bombs the cake, which causes the ring on the top layer to fly off. Rickie jumps up to retrieve it as it merrily rolls towards.
Meaghan tries to stop him by grabbing his arm, but breaks one of her multi-colored nails. Shocked, she immediately falls to the ground and hits her head on the edge of the table.
Even though Kuching has a modern EMS, they deside it’s easier to piggyback her to the hospital 4 kilometres away rather than call for an ambulance.
Now she’s in a coma, and Rickie sinks to his knees right next to the ionizer happily pumping mist into the air and screams “Whyyyyy??”

Wow, taking a week off has its advantages…

  8. Mystisith

Yes! Happy Friday and OT everyone!
That week passed so fast. I’m still trying to catch my breath.
I’m working on the recap of Can Love Become Money ep3 at the moment. You better prepare yourself cause it’s going to be a blast. I have invited guests: A poet, Benny Hill, Nice Guys and much more. My personal muse must have gone totally nuts.

    • 8.1 Shukmeister

      Awesome,, Myst!

    • 8.2 cherkell

Yay Mysti! You go, girl! Looking forward to the next recap — AJA AJA AJA FIGHTING!!

Good Luck with your new adventure. I can’t wait to read it

    • 8.4 Arhazivory

      Hey there Myst. :D

    • 8.5 kopytko

Yay! Looking forward to the recap (can be in installments, like ep 2;)) and to Nice Guys!

      • 8.5.1 Mystisith

No, no, no! Only 1 chapter! Need to discipline myself, even if i feel guilty of letting my poor readers without anything to read another day. :)

        • 8.5.1.1 Shukmeister

Don’t be…[evil laugh] I’ve gotten good at the cliffhanger two chapter 1000 word blog…

  9. SweetiePie54

Hola Open Threaders! I hope everyone is having a wonderful Friday or Saturday depending on where you are. :)

It’s been awhile since I have come here. I haven’t been busy, I’ve just been in a drama funk, which is weird since there have been so many things out to watch. I’ve been a bit slow to get out of it, but I think I finally did. I’ve started Rooftop Prince which I am loving. I am only a few episodes into it but I have been skimming recaps so I’m excited for what is coming. I’ve also been watching Que Sera, Sera which I LOVE. My newfound love of Shinhwa (and Eric Mun) has gotten me to watch this drama, which has been on my to watch list for AGES! I am on episode 8 and I am HOOKED. This is very late but thank you to Javabeans for recapping this when it aired as her recaps are amazing (as usual) and their seems to be some scenes missing on the site I’m watching.

    I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! :) :)

    • 9.1 Arhazivory

Que Sera Swra is one of those titles that seems to always be popping up. Maybe I should check it out as well.

      • 9.1.1 okiejune

Definitely try it – I watched it based on OT comments, and loved it. (mostly just watched rom coms before, but am trying other types because QSS was so good)

      • 9.1.2 Hang-ah

It’s really really good, but MAN did that show put me through the wringer.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so emotionally broken by a tv show or movie before. So prepare yourself :) .

  10. 10 shel

Hello, chingus! I’m early today, sitting in the driveway waiting for my daughter.

K2H is giving me 5 to 6 heart attacks an episode. I love it. Unless they do something really stupid at the end, it will be my all time fave drama. If they could just do something about terrible English speaking actors, it would be practically perfect. That creepy chick has the whiniest voice….like fingernails on a chalkboard. <>

ALso watching QIM, which so far is adorable. I gave up on FK. I’ll check in on the last ep to make sure my YAI got his weepy girl, but I’m done with it. Surprisingly, I’m liking Love Rain, which I didn’t really expect to. First time JGS has not looked more like a girl than a guy, lol. He’s like a grown up. I wasn’t crazy about the first few eps…and I noticed something yesterday. The first eps were supposedly in the 70′s, when they were in their early 20′s, which would put them all in their 60′s today. How come they barely look 40?

This weekend starts the summer of non-stop company. Most of it family, which is awesome. My parents will be next door for the summer.. A little pressure to keep my mom from being bored and my six year old nephew, who surely would rather be home with his friends than hanging with my 70 Yrs+ parents. But, we signed him up for swimming lessons. I’ll be driving 20 miles to the pool twice a day, since my daughter has swim team in the afternoons and lessons are only in the mornings. My car should be able to find it’s way on it’s own before the summer is over. The most exciting thing is that my son and DIL will be here mid-June to stay until August. I’m thinking this may be the last time they’ll get to spend this much time with us, so we plan to enjoy it. Between trips to the pool.

    Everyone have a good weekend!!!

    • 10.1 Saima

TK2H is P.E.R.F.E.C.T!! No other way to describe it….yes, there were a few lows in the past but the highs have rendered me speechless and I sit there shell-shocked unable to breathe! Ep 15-18=perfection and at this point know that this drama will go out with a bang!

The acting astounds me, really, with nary a misstep from the actors playing the core characters! The characterizations are so thorough and nothing out of character ever happens! LOVE IT!!

I’ve been watching K-dramas for almost 2 yrs now and am so glad to be a part of this spazz-fest of a drama. <3

ps: Seung-gi is soooo bloody hott!! HAD TO MENTION THIS!! When he comes on-screen I just sighhhhhh!

      • 10.1.1 Arhazivory

Saima….I find you lurking in here too. ^^

        • 10.1.1.1 Saima

          HAPPY B’DAY, girl!! <3

yeah, i'll be going back to TK2H Ep 18 thread and spazzing with the rest of ya'll!! ughh, will have to read close to 600 comments…oh the work we do for our love for this drama!! :D

          • 10.1.1.1.1 Arhazivory

Its only about 150 that I have to catch up. Good luck to you Saima.

      • 10.1.2 shel

I’ve always liked Seung Gi, but this is the first show that I’ve thought of Seung Gi as a man, not a cute puppy. He’s really stepped up to the role and is doing a fabulous job. LOVE LOVE him.

        • 10.1.2.1 Saima

What’s interesting is with other K-actors all of us hope for the requisite broody shower scene but I’m perfectly fine with a fully-clothed Seung-gi as long as he parades around in formal wear!! I wouldn’t mind a broody Seung-gi shower scene, though!! Who was I kidding…I’m as shallow as they come!! :D

          • 10.1.2.1.1 Arhazivory

When we look deeply in ourselves we realize that we do want that scene. Wouldn’t mind a broody Shi-Kyung shower scene either. He was clothed and in a car while the rain showered outside in ep 17. That was hardly satisfying.

      • 10.1.3 MojoJojo

Co sign on everything you said! My mood is attached to the outcome of that drama. I’m pretty sure I look insane while watching but I do not care!

I love it so hard I don’t know what i’m gonna do when it’s over.

        • 10.1.3.1 shel

I know I do. Last night I was watching with headphones cuz hubby had to work, but I kept talking and/or yelling at the screen. My family thinks I”m nuts But whatever. What an awesome show. I think I may use this one to hook hubby. Although, it’ll ruin him for anything else.

          • 10.1.3.1.1 Saima

I got my brother hooked onto this. After watching Ep 17 the guy goes, “oh, crap WE have to wait another day to find out what happens to HA!!” lulz

          • 10.1.3.1.2 shel

Hubby has a soft spot for butt-kicking babes, so he’ll LOVE HJW.

    • 10.2 Mystisith

Fashion King deserves a special place in the drama museum: It’s an epic fail but at the same time it’s fun to watch in a very twisted way.

    • 10.3 zgznoona

Shel darling, I’m not watching Love Rain, but I’m pretty sure they said the ones in the 70s are the parents of the ones in the present

      • 10.3.1 shel

They did. BUT the actors playing the parents might be 40, but no WAY are they 60.

        • 10.3.1.1 aoiaheen

I know they were apart for 30 years. So I think they have to be atleast in thier early 50′s. I think they met each other in the late 70′s. and had kids in the late eighties.

The actors look like they in thier 40′s but i think they are meant to be in their 50′s. I think the PD thought its easier for the audience to accept thier relationship if they look younger.

I don’t know why… they should have chose actors in thier 50′s. like Choi min soo…

          • 10.3.1.1.1 shel

The mom looks barely old enough to have a daughter that age, although I know from experience with my Asian friends that Asian women don’t age until they’re like 70, lol. My college roomie still looks 25 and she has 2 daughters in college and one married.

      • 10.3.2 shel

Not to mention, if the characters who were in their 20′s in the 70′s had children in their 20′s now, they would have all waited until their 40′s to have them. Not impossible, but kind of unlikely.

        • 10.3.2.1 zgznoona

In drama land reason and logic can be bent and we just have to go with the flow, or go crazy trying to make sense aout of it

          • 10.3.2.1.1 shel

Mostly I ignore it and it took me this many episodes to even notice. I think it’s cuz I read the synopsis that says that “40 years later, their children…..” I’m like What?!

        • 10.3.2.2 skelly

It actually makes sense – lots of people have kids later in life now. For example, my sister is of the right age for this drama – she was 20 years old in 1974, but she didn’t have children until her 30′s, so her youngest (born in 1990) is still in college right now. I’m another example – I’m about to turn 51 but my youngest is 12.

    • 10.4 Arhazivory

You sound like a good parent. <3 Good luck with the car and I hope you do lots of exciting stuff with son and DIL (thought for a minute before I realized its daughter in law). ^^

      • 10.4.1 shel

I don’t know about being great parents, but I love my kids. Even the 15 year old who lives to argue with me. :0)

        • 10.4.1.1 Arhazivory

The fact that you love them makes you great. :D

    • 10.5 kewbie

Shel, as I read the first line of your post, I chuckled a bit because I am sitting in the carpool line of my kids’ school waiting for my 2 older kids. So this is what we do in the mean time — log onto Dramabeans and make sn OT appearance. :-)

      • 10.5.1 shel

Yep. Something to do while we wait at school, at swim team, at church youth group, at piano lessons…..I spend a lot of time waiting. Only a couple more years and if I’m brave enough, she’ll be driving herself.

  11. 11 Leaf

Hope everyone had a good week!!

Have reorganised my dramawatching spreadsheet so it now makes more sense! Haha… and it now has catagories for US TV programs as well! So now I’m super organised!!! :D
And I also wanna watch a Thai Drama (and Filipino…?) so I can get closer to my quest of watching something from every country! But looking at what I cam currently watching…. maybe I should wait a while…

Watching King 2 Hearts at the moment but have really rubbish internet, my cables kinda broken :( so it’s been annoying with all the stoping and starting. But it is definatly good!

Hope everyone is doing well!! <3

      • 14.1.1 John

        zgznoona~

Just whatever they have on Dramacrazy, they have it listed as SPEC Special 1..

Is there a part 2? If so, I wanna see !

I see that the movie is out… Waiting…

She has a gyoza screen saver on her PC. I lol’d when she was messing with the gangster’s hair…

In Kagi no Kakatta Heya, Enomoto-san and Aoto-san are falling for each other ever so slowly

        • 14.1.1.1 zgznoona

Usually when tit has a number on it means there is more than on.
If you watched it and look like a tied ending, then that might be the whole thing.
Gyoza screen saver…I ended up making gyoza from scratch after watching that drama
Enomoto and Aoto are so cute. I love odd characters, and those two are just perfect. Not sure if they give us any romance. Some who I have a hard time watching Ohno in a romantic mood in a drama. But hey! anything is possible

          • 14.1.1.1.1 Hillary

Lord, I am tired … I saw your post and asked myself “whose tits have a number on it” … LOL. Took me a while to realize it was shorthand for title.

        • 14.1.1.2 zgznoona

          @Hillary LOL I’m laughing so hard I’m crying. I didn’t realize I did that. Sorry :S

          • 14.1.1.2.1 Hillary

I just finished working 48 hours straight … I shouldn’t have come to OT in this state. And not sure why I am on now when I am really tired and should be sleeping. Lord, OT addict now.

          • 14.1.1.2.2 zgznoona

Hillary, is not you. It’s me and my typos. My brain seems to go faster than my fingers and ended up omitting some letters.
At least this time was a funny typo, or maybe not, well I laugh at my self when I saw it

    • 14.2 Arhazivory

I just started Keizoku and only at ep 2. Ep 1 was certainly interesting and I’m looking forward to more. After that I’ll go right on to SPEC.

      • 14.2.1 John

I haven’t seen Keizoku. SPEC is well worth watching though.

  15. 15 barshabarsha

    happy friday for you all

  16. 16 JoAnne

    Good Morning my wondrous beans!

K2H. Really. There’s just nothing to say about this show. You all know what it is, what these actors are. It’s the perfect storm of story/direction/acting/music.

Meteor Garden II – watching him fall for Ye Sha is killing me and it goes on forever. I had to take a break because I can’t have that ache plus the emotion of K2H.

Yay! Phil Phillips in final two for American Idol!

Not much going on…they’re tearing down a building that is on the opposite side of my parking lot at work. I could hardly bring myself inside this morning, it was so exciting to watch. Crane SMASH! Crane TRASH!

Now extremely excited about Arang, with the addition of General Choi from Chuno.

Is anyone else getting really, really irritated with Ionair? Or is just me?

    • 16.1 Saima

unnieee!! Did you watch Ep 17 & 18? wahhhhhh!! This show’s not good for my heart…my heart rate drops and soars w/ consecutive scenes!!

Next week I’ll be crying tears of sadness when this momentous show comes to an end! sniffles…

      • 16.1.1 JoAnne

Saima, I did watch them. 17 left with me actual swollen eyes. Not as much crying on 18, but a HUGE workout for my heart anyway with fear, mostly. This drama is just insanely good.

And for whomever mentioned uri Seung Gi and the whole shower thing – that that thought has crossed my mind as well. Isn’t it funny that we all adore him and no one is really unhappy with the fully-dressed state we always find him in? I mean, dang, boy looks good in a suit…but there’s something about him that is just – it seems inappropriate to ogle. Doesn’t mean I would kick him out of bed at this point, though…he’s welcome, crackers and all.

ShiKyung too, but he’s got to keep those motorcycle boots handy.

Ok that sounds way more twisted than I’m thinking.

    • 16.2 shel

Maybe we need to get Ricky a crane for when anyone kisses his woman.

    • 16.3 zgznoona

JoAnne, I don’t use Ionair that much.
I’ve used it for some movies, but rather find them directly at the source, most of their videos are from youtube.
and about the life dramas I go to Solive. You have to download it to your computer but you get OCN, tvN, and some others you don;t get on ionair

      • 16.3.1 Arhazivory

Solive. Never heard of that. I doownload dramas as well so I’ll check tat out.

        • 16.3.1.1 zgznoona

I’ll look for the link and send it to you. It’s a program that you have to install

Actually someone in OT gave me the link some time ago, but I don’t remember who.
Sorry I can’t remember your name :( But I’m really grateful

          • 16.3.1.2.1 Arhazivory

Oh nice. Thanks for the link and by extension I also thank the person who originally gave it to you. ^^

          • 16.3.1.2.2 JoAnne

ooh me TOO will be checking this out tonight.

          • 16.3.1.2.3 cherkell

Darn. Anyone know if there is a Mac version? TVU was working well streaming the cable channels for awhile, but suddenly went off the grid and now only streams the Big Three…

    • 16.4 Ivoire

      Hi JoAnne,

I agree with you that TK2Hs is the perfect storm of acting/directing/music/story. I would like to add that the cinematography is great as well. This is a drama where they have invested financially (big budget) and it shows. Definitely worth rewatching when it will be over, or when things are slow… you know, to reminisce or relive the moments :-) . I was rereading the first six recaps of this drama this week, and I felt like watching it again. Seeing the former king’s face (hyung) brought a smile to my face and I wanted to rewatch those episodes.
I was writing a long rave to a lady I know (who also likes and watches Kdramas) about TK2Hs. She wanted to know if she should watch it. At the end of my rave (which basically listed all the reasons why this drama was worth watching and no, I didn’t give her any spoilers), I ended by saying that in my opinion, “the king” was like the best dessert (or meal) one had ever had. It was to be savored one spoonful at a time. I also told her that some dramas should just be watched whereas “the king” is to be “experienced.” To my long text, she said “wow, that was a rave!” to which I responded, “yeah, but I am not exaggerating and it is well deserved.” She will give it a try when she has time.

      • 16.4.1 Saima

        Beautiful! <3

I will have to say being a part of a rabid fan base has helped me understand other aspects of this drama than I would've if I'd have watched it later. Teasing apart the drama alongside them has been a pleasure.

For instance, even before the drama addressed that there're many parallels b/w JH and BG the fans of the show on DB discussed it in much depth: what divides both of them is love, which the former has from his family and his country men. Even after JH fires Secretary Eun the latter helps him in dealing with BG. So, BG's attempts on creating a chasm b/w JH and his 'people' didn't really work.

The analogy of JH running 60 kms is akin to the 60 yr divide b/w the two Koreas; the colours that JH and HA are wearing at their engagement in the convertible represent their country's colours (blue and red); and the reason why JH visited the chicken farm factory is that N.K. prides in said industry.

There're are so many to count and/or remember but it enabled me to appreciate the details that the writers put in which would've been lost on the int'l audience if not for those dedicated fans!

@Hey Ivoire. I have been so busy at work, I have been reaching OT when everyone’s gone home … or so it seems.

Only two things spoil K2H: those ill-fitting uniforms that they gave to the non-Korean actors (I noticed a poor Chinese actor today was drowning in his uniform just like some of those who participated in the WOC) and the ungrammatical English by English speaking actors

. I mean, if you are Australian and English is your native tongue, then tell the pd or whoever that a sentence is ungrammatical, don’t just say it and make people cringe. Other than that, K2H is my second favorite drama currently airing (sorry … Kim Boong Do of Queen In Huyn’s Man have quite stolen my heart). I am now reaching into work at noon on Wednesday and Thursday because I watch K2H and RTP simultaneously followed by QIHM …

        • 16.4.2.1 Ivoire

Back at you Hillary, Hello!!! How are you? Wow!!!! You are quite faithful to your dramas, aren’t you :-) ? It’s a good thing you can come to work at noon on Wed. and Thurs. so you can watch K2H and RTP, followed by QIHM.
So, I have a question: how do you watch K2H and RTP simultaneously? Are you watching both at the same time? How? On different screens? And I am assuming you are watching them raw, right?
It was good to hear from you, by the way. I understand being so busy, you can’t read or participate on OT when most people are, although part of the beauty of OT here is that you can participate at any time because most people skim the posts to see if there are new ones, which are easy to spot because of the time they were posted on, and I am sure you knew that :-)
So, if you watch those 3 dramas raw (as I am assuming), do you watch them again on the weekend with the subs, or do you watch something else?

          • 16.4.2.1.1 Hillary

@Ivoire: I am so glad I was able to make contact. I know you too were busy a few weeks ago with your move and I know it went well. I know you are still looking for a job so good luck with that (I should ask a friend of mine if she knows of anything … she lives out in suburbs of LA and rubs shoulders with folks that hire nannies… can you send me resume to admin@msvproductions.com so that I can forward).

Well to give a bit of a background. I broke down one day and paid to be a premium member of ionair. I know … I know. But I was accessing it to stream MoonSun live and got up early to get on 2 hours in advance to watch ionair free … and my flash player died 10 minutes before show started. Then I tried to log back on but by then they had met their 5,000 user quota. So, I took out credit card and paid to become a premium member.

So, this is how I watch both K2H and RP simultaneously. Keep in mind that I am quite good at multi-tasking (it is part of my job as I often have up to 8 windows on my screen at any one time).

I actually have 4 windows open. Two are ionair (with its lovely close captioning in English), one with RP and the other with K2H. Ionair’s close captioning now includes it on the video itself (like subtitles) in addition to off to the side. Sometimes, the video goes out on ionair, but you still get to see the close captioning at the side. I realize that the video on ionair lags behind its close captioning terribly, but the close captioning actually runs better in time with my backup streams (TVU and SOLIVE). So I use SOLIVE to watch K2H and TVU to watch RP. If the video is fine on ionair, then I just have SOLIVE and TVU running in the background and have the two ionair screens as a split screen. If the video goes out, then I have the video from my backup sources, resize to fit where the ionair video used to be but with the close captioning box visible. And that is how I watch both simultaneously (and have fairly good understanding of what I am seeing thanks to ionair close captioning). Once the appointed time for QIHM reaches (even if the other 2 shows is still running), I switch back to SOLIVE to watch my TvN channel (I do love the shows this channel has brought me … first Flower Boy Ramen Shop then Shut Up Flower Boy Band and now Queen In Huyn’s Man).

And of course, viki is fantastic because they always seem to have RP subbed (usually at 90+ if not 100+) within 6-8 hours after airing, while K2H is usually subbed within 12-15 hours. Unfortunately, I have to wait 3-4 days for QIHM but at least both episodes of QIHM are generally subbed before the next airing on Wednesday and Fridays.

So that is my long-winded explanation when I could have probably just said yes … and be done with it… LOL.

          • 16.4.2.1.2 Ivoire

@ Hillary, I am glad we could make contact as well. We haven’t communicated in a while, life gets busy, I know. I quickly skimmed through your response and I will have to get back to it, so I can fully understand and visualize what you explained to me. Technology is not my forte, so it takes me a while to understand certain things :-)
I am just quickly writing this to let you know that I actually currently live in Northern CA, in San Mateo, which is close to Mountain View (where Google is), close to Palo Alto, Los Altos and Sunnyvale etc… Your friend lives in LA, which is in Southern CA, so I don’t think that would work (unless she knows people where I live or in the area).
I do want to thank you very much however for remembering what I share and for caring. I appreciate that.
P.S.: As one who has written very long posts on this blog (which you have enjoyed reading, yay!!!!), I am really glad you went the long winded way with your response. For one, your details will help me understand and try to visualize what you explained. 2nd: as you know, it’s not as if one gets censored here for writing a long post and 3rd: what you wrote wasn’t about “hot air” or things that don’t make sense, so I personally appreciate that you took the time to explain things to me. It brings a smile to my face to see that you wrote so much, when I AM THE ONE who has been notorious on this blog for being long winded. You will not hear (or in this case, read) any complaints or put downs from me, rest assured :-)
I hope the weather is nice in Chicago these days, it is gorgeous here. Will be back later, with more.

      • 16.4.3 Ivoire

        Hello again Saima,

Thank you for sharing those tidbits of information about TK2Hs. I knew about some of them, such as the divide between BG and JH and the reason for the trip to the kitchen farm in North Korea, but I didn’t know all of them. I did realize at some point that the writers really paid attention to the details and inserted certain things for a specific reason. It is always nice to learn from others what they have gleaned from reading and interacting with others.
I have also noticed that you are quick to share the information you have, which I appreciate. I hope your weekend is going well.

        • 16.4.3.1 Saima

          aww, thank you!!

I will have to say I have a vested interest for sharing these TK2H tidbits!! :P

            you are welcome!

  17. 17 Raitei

Finally, it’s weekend! (Although, that doesn’t change anything much for me; I’m working on weekends. Lol)

So, straight to the point: I currently have “Another Time, Same Sky (같은 하늘 다른 시간에)” on endless replay and I’m wondering, does anyone know where I can get the instrumental version? If anyone know, can you please share it with me? Pretty please? O^O (that’s puppy dog eyes, in case you’re wondering XD)

    • 17.1 Shukmeister

I haven’t seen it yet, but hopefully they’ll release it before the show is over. I’ve only seen 3 or 4 songs from QIHM so far, and that one is my fav.

Happy OT everyone. Just passing by to say hi.

Busy weekend editing and doing some subbing. No time during the weekdays with work.

Wish me luck as I am giving myself a ban on soompi so I don’t read any accidental spoilers for K2H. My heart is in tatters after reading an ep 19 spoiler rumour. This drama as some of you know ( yeah yeah no need to mention you see me here :-) ) has me totally obsessed. Never watched a drama which made me have palpitations after palpitations and leave me shell shocked every time I live stream. Forget about waiting for recaps and raw links. Live stream is the way to go!!

    Have a good weekend.

    • 18.1 Saima

Ep 19 rumour?!! DON’T.WANNA.KNOW!! omigoshhh. FIVE DAYS TO GO until Ep 19!!

I JUST hope for one thing: Please don’t kill any of my favourite four characters!!

    • 18.2 leonardswench

This is one of my problems with Soompi — the lack of etiquette over rumors and spoilers (they need better moderators, apologies to any here who are, and that comes from the top down — owner to moderating team).

Enjoy the weekend, I’m re-arranging the office for a late spring clean and re-working a 5 year old screenplay that has been suddenly asked for whilst making corsets. It’s going to be a tight weekend in every possible way!

      • 18.2.1 Shukmeister

Wow, talk about multitasking – dust lamp – slide in whalebone – rewrite chapter twelve – clean ashtray – stitch lace – rewrite chapter thirteen – roll around in chair (fun!) – add laces – rewrite chapter fourteen…

        • 18.2.1.1 leonardswench

That is not too far off the mark of how today went, and how the next three days will probably also go.

Let’s put it this way, I’m in re-write hell and distractions of the cleaning and sewing kind are most welcome, even if not technically the best course to follow when trying to figure out how to plump up my middle without re-writing the end.

To keep me sane, I’m putting up new posters, too. MMMMM Leader and Cha Cha Cha side-by-side over my laptop. A girl has to do what she has to do!

          • 18.2.1.1.1 Shukmeister

:-) – Good luck with, and keep a chilled bottle in the fridge as an incentive.

Happy Friday, Beans. Taking a break from gardening and warbler watching to pitch in.
Loving K2H. Wow. The plotting is amazing. Stunningly good turns and emotional moments.
Fashion King…I can only bear to skim through it because the passiveness of certain characters makes me cringe…will they ever change?

I got a flashback malware virus (healed now) from a site and now I am wondering if you folks have recommendations on safer sites than others for dramas and news.

At the moment I am only checking dramafever and dramabeans because I trust those two. My subscription to dramafever has been so worth it. Naw, I have no connection to them. My brain is just happy to not have to watch the annoying ads and also I like tracking my shows and being able to immediately return to exactly where I was in a show I stopped watching, even if it was weeks ago.

The only thing is that they take so long to post some things that occasionally I like to watch some shows ASAP, even without subtitles. K2H addiction, anyone? Good for my Korean learning to go without subtitles for a first watch. So, any hints would be welcome…regarding sites that seem better than others.

Meanwhile, I just got a phone app so I can learn Korean letters. That’s what you get for watching Tree With Deep Roots. Suddenly, you want to learn the alphabet!

Dramabeans rocks. I so love the clever conversation and community here. It’s great to be with folks who appreciate emotional trajectory and all the elements of great drama creation. American soap operas might not be crashing if they had a community of criticism and appreciation similar to dramabeans.

    • 19.1 Arhazivory

I also felt like studying the alphabet after being obsessed with TWDR. But I’m already such a bad Japanese student so I don’t know when I’ll get around to hangul.

    • 19.2 shel

I’ve never had problems with viki.

      • 19.2.1 SoyB

Ditto about viki… K2H is on faster on Viki without subs and the subs been incredibly fast with the recent episodes.

  20. 20 Eliza Bennet

    Greetings Friends,

Currently watching Inside The White Tower and this was the drama that brought back the sleepless nights and being a zombie at work. I have watched 14 Episodes and very much in love with the whole thing (needless to say despite the fact that loving Dr.Choi I somehow want the lying, cheating, scheming Dr.Jang to find redemption. What’s amazing is that this has nothing to do with the way the actors look – for a change-. I do not really care for Lee Sun Gyun (neither the appereance nor the voice) and this is the first time I watch Kim Myung Min who is easy(ier) on the eyes but no So Ji Sub or Song Seung Heun.
And the drama is not perfect. Their attempts at shameless manipulation and hints of the story arc with the subtlety of sledge hammers only manage to stick so bad since the rest of the drama is simply perfect. The story (I understand is adapted from a Japanese manga – but I’m a spoilerphobe so I stay away from anything that may tip me off on what’s going to happen-) the acting and the conflicts seem very real to me no matter what the setting is.

    • 20.1 leonardswench

Just started my rewatch of Inside the White Tower today, so I won’t spoil it for you, but it will be interesting to hear what you think of it, in the end.

    • 20.2 leonardswench

I was hoping to hear back that you’d finished Inside the White Tower, Eliza Bennet.

The number one irritant in the show for me — the music!!!! Swelling music of increasing intensity does not equal faster pacing or even emotionally climactic moments, since they’ve all been pre-laid out to such an extent that literally, nothing is a surprise in the drama. It spoils itself.

That said, it is mostly a well-written, well-acted drama, the first medical K-drama that I truly loved despite it’s flaws. I wanted to talk to you about the ending, when and if you get to it and have the time. Dr. Choi, Dr. Yum, Dr. Roh — my favorites for looks and personalities, but I also love that the drama is literally chock-ful of k-faces — if you’ve watched more than ten dramas, you’ll recognize practically everyone in the cast.

Still don’t want to spoiler it for you, so won’t say too much more.

      • 20.2.1 Eliza Bennet

nside the White Tower ended with me endlessly crying.

        SPOILERS

Dr.Jang died – of some weird cancer and he donated his body to be examined by Dr.Oh. He was such a compelling character. One of the two villains I felt sympathetic towards (the other is the one in Old Boy). Even though I fail to understand the ambition (being really without any myself) and if I had to choose a life partner Dr.Choi would be the one I’d get along with, there was something about Dr.Jang that made me root for him despite his being clearly in the wrong. Well it is good writing and good acting – a combination that is hard to resist.

I don’t feel anything towards Dr.Yum except I never want him to be my doctor. Seriously what was wrong with him? I completely agree that Dr.Jang was responsible and the last verdict was correct but Dr.Yum’s personality is not compatible with examining patients and surgery. I understand a person being shy and not assertive but this is not forgivable when a human life is involved. If only he could have been a little bit responsible, he’d be able to get some help. He was simply incompetent and he also was responsible of that man’s life.

Dr.Choi is the flat character since he didn’t have any arc. He was the same as he started. It would have been more interesting if he chose not to testify but I knew that he would. This is the character I know and recognise best hence he was not very interesting to me.

All in all I think this one is a keeper since the setting may be different but the issues maintain themselves since human nature is both constant and variable.

        • 20.2.1.1 leonardswench

          SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Dr. Jang is the type of man that cheats on his wife, stabs his friends in the back repeatedly, changes sides as often as he needs to get ahead, and still stays fairly happily married and his friends forgive him time after time and he skyrockets to corporate success young. I truly found the greed of his power trip honest, at least, and therefore, could get on board with his ‘redemption’ in the end. Except, in real life, I’m sure I’d be saying under my breath “too little, too late, pal” since he really didn’t leave his wife, his lover, or the world a much better place and peace. Donating his body, fine, that does some good, furthering surgery, yep, also noble, but he did live such a duplicitous and twisted life that his ‘genius’ was supposed to make up for the evil? I know, I bought it in the end, too. As did his loyal friends: his genius blinded them enough to his faults that they followed him and twisted their own moral codes to go where he directed.

Dr. Yum discovered what many an intern learns — classroom doctoring is a far-cry from the God-like power and control you can and will have over a real patient’s life and health decisions, and many a young doctor has screwed up royally by the stress of a life-or-death situation. He either learns from it and becomes a better doctor, switches to another area of medicine, or departs the field altogether. The first time my brother lost a patient he nearly drove himself crazy with “if I had _____”, but within a few years, he was a much better doctor and has now learned what most veteran doctors tried to tell him and didn’t get through until it was real: there are miracles you cannot explain, and the flip side of the record plays the “There Are Tragedies You Cannot Explain, Too” tune. A patient seems to be recovering and dies two days later from septicemia despite all modern advances and aggressive and immediate treatments. Another lives 20 years longer than his prognosis, x-rays, scans, and blood tests says he should. It’s inexplicable, and if Dr. Yum didn’t know before, he was fast learning to normalize the life-and-death care he was giving to many patients, as well as to be far more aggressive with his decision-making or consult earlier and more often with other doctors who LISTEN to him. Which leads us to Dr. Choi ….

who probably found out very early as an intern that he was too invested in his patients and therefore, chose research over surgery, hence his specializing and sending them along to another doctor once a diagnosis had been reached. He over-tested, according to other doctors, but he wanted to be sure that he was sure that he was sure what their diagnosis was and how best to treat it.

Dr. Roh was a writing device and I was disappointed that they didn’t give Dr. Dreamy more of a storyline, in the end. I was happy when he was a conflict and disappointed when they didn’t bring him back, his background gave room for lots of potential that went to waste.

Dr. Lee and Dr. Oh — these veteran actors, wow, always in there, delivering the goods. Stylistically, bits of ITWT were over-acted, and I’m sure it would be filmed slightly lower key today, however, still just a fabulous ensemble cast with mostly tight plot and dialogue.

I cried buckets the first watch, still do sometimes if I watch when I’m a little low, but I honestly appreciate that Inside the White Tower took us inside surgery, the political world of chief of surgery and staff, and into the courtroom over negligence. It was the first medical k-drama that I loved.

Now, some side notes: Dr. Yum was oh-so-appropriately named! DIMPLES!!!!! Dr. Roh became Dr. RRRRR (that’s a growl) in our house, as well. So, some yumminess to moon over, and then there’s The Voice. Sigh.

Hey y’all, I’m doing a presentation on kdrama (and pop and such) and the online fandom for my intercultural communications class. The topic is Digital Cultures and the Global Village, so… Where’s everybody from? What drew you to kdrama? What do you like about the community? etc. etc.
I actually rather abruptly changed to this topic when the Global Popular Culture dismissed kdrama as a global force. So I dumped the presentation on the Arab Spring I was going to do and am currently gathering opinions and clips for a multimedia presentation. So, if y’all have recs for music video or drama clips I should use, please share!

    • 21.1 Arhazivory

I’m from Jamaica. What drew me to it was the fact that everybody seemed to be raving about it. I was into jdramas before. I love everything about the kdrama community. Since there’s hardly anyone here to talk about my obsession with, I have to go online to squeal with others. :D

      Good luck on your study.

      • 21.1.1 Amber

Thank you! My presentation is on Tuesday, so gathering things very quickly ;) .
So when you say everyone, do you mean people on other online communities? I ask, because you said there’s hardly anyone there to talk about your obsession with.

        • 21.1.1.1 Arhazivory

Anyone at home. My mom watches kdrama but she’s overseas now so I’m back to having no one to discuss with. And even when she’s here….that’s just one person. My main place to discuss kdramas is here on DB. I’m signed up on other forums but don’t talk much there.

My main dramafriend moved to another state, but then I discovered that some of my friends were dramafiends and I never knew! So it doesn’t hurt to talk about dramas with people, because sometimes you’ll find that they actually are interested in the same thing. Or you could draw them to the dramaside ;) .

          • 21.1.1.1.2 Arhazivory

They think I’m crazy. All my friends. Its just so different from our culture. Most Jamaicans only interact with asians through ‘karate’ old shows or one of the many ‘CHinese’ wholesales downtown. Its a culture where every asian is ‘chinese’.

          • 21.1.1.1.3 Amber

I’m familiar with that attitude, though it’s really “Every Asian is East Asian” here. It’s very different culturally here (PNW, US) as well, but most of the people I know in RL like that krama is so different. In possibly related news, most of my friends are nerds/geeks like me ;)
I’m also (proudly) a fan of classic Shaw Brothers films. Come Drink With Me is my absolute favourite, and the rumours that they’re going to remake it make me shudder. If it was made today it would be…harsh.

Arhazivory, u have company. Fellow Jamaican here and big time kdrama addict. Currently on vacation with 1 week left before back to work. Watching – K2Hs, RTP, Queen Inhyun’s Man, God of War, Feast of Gods and finally Fondant Garden.

Enjoying – K2Hs, Queen Inhyun’s Man, God of War.
Huge fan of sagueks and historical. None misses me until it bores me. I care about the content and quality of the story more than the actor names. Though I do think the working conditions for them (live shooting) is horrible.

Love reading recaps from all sites.

I am always a lurker at dramabeans, soompi, koala’s playground, cadence and other kdrama sites. Do talk now and then at most of them but not often.

There are a lot of Jamaican kdrama addicts out there its just that we don’t talk much about our addiction. I understand that a couple of weeks ago they were showing Shining Inheritance on our local station which of course brought more kdrama addicts.

What I find interesting is that – I just completed my exams (cross fingers hope to pass all). I had an easier time remembering a kdrama episodes I watched 1 time years or even recently. But I look on the exam paper and my mind goes blank, wonder how many people went through that.

Have to go for now, will be back later.

You have company here – no problem.

And I am from Trinidad & Tobago. I used to watch Mhz World because they showed crime dramas from other parts of the world (Norway, Italy, France, etc.). Right after the crime drama, they used to show Korean dramas but I always went straight from there Mhz to Sci Fi, or History or National Geographic. One day I could not find anything of interest so I ended up watching the Korean drama … Of course, I did not know it was a Korean drama … LOL. As Arhazivory said, all Asians are “Chinese” to most West Indians. The drama that caught my attention was “Someday” with Boo Dae Na. And that was it. I put it on my schedule and after 3 weeks of watching, I just couldn’t wait for the next week to see what happened next. So I got on my computer and from there found Mysoju. Then I saw found my second Korean drama (hide my head in shame because this is OT …Boys Over Flowers and loved it). So then I found a Korean movie, My Little Bride and fell in love with Kim Rae Won. So of course, I started watching all of his movies and dramas and found My Love Patzzi, which is when I actually found dramabeans because she had a write up on the whole ending of that show. Actually, I think Javabeans and 2 others had it out about what that show meant…. And I have been lurking here ever since. I think I lurked for about 6-9 months before I actually worked up the courage to post in OT. I must say that I don’t watch anything other than korean dramas now (I have also been experimenting with taiwanese and mainland chinese dramas … well really, I have just been following Roy Qiu around and watching his dramas … LOL.). And I know it is bad because just a few months ago, I was live streaming 11 ongoing dramas. Praise the Lord it is down to 4 now (K2H, QIHM, RTP and Love Rain) as I could not imagined keeping up that pace and lucky they didn’t fire me at work… LOL. I am trying to get my sisters to give them a shot … I know they would get just as addicted if they do. I know of only 1 person with my addiction but really come to the dramabeans, soompi, koala’s playground and cadence because I enjoy being around people who don’t think I am deranged when I stay up to marathon a drama. LOL.

California. Just happened on Playful Kiss on Hulu during an insomnia episode while on vacation. (I could watch on my laptop w/headphones and not wake my family up…which I would do if I turned on the TV). They only had 3 or 4 eps posted at the time, but I watched them all that night. I know it has all kinds of flaws, but I thought it was charming and funny. So, then I went looking for more…..

      • 21.2.1 Amber

When did you find the community, and what did you think of it at first? What do you think of it now?

        • 21.2.1.1 shel

I can’t remember when I first found DB here. This is really the only recap/drama ews site I follow. I pop over to Raine’s site now and again. I also can’t remember why I found it….like what was I looking for? But, I think JB and GF have great insight, they’re really good at explaining the cultural stuff I didn’t understand (banmal, etc). And mostly I like the same shows they do. I usually watch the show, then read their recap to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Especially for a show like K2H where missing plot points would mess with my head, lol.

I don’t know about other sites, but everyone here is very respectful (as long as we’re not talking about Goo Hye Sun, lol) and nice. I hate forums where people like to be jerks. I also like it because I learn about old dramas, or t-dramas or whatever that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise.

          • 21.2.1.1.1 Raine

I remember looking for You’re Beautiful recaps because I stumbled upon You’re Beautiful looking for Jdorama and not understanding certain cultural things. I was hoping a recap would explain it! I stumbled upon DB…and then Thundie’s and then Koala’s…etc etc. Then made my own and haunted Deeno’s…now Mystisith has one…

      • 21.2.2 shel

I’ve met people here on DB that are from England, Spain, Saudi Arabia, all over the US, Malaysia, Philippines, France…..I can’t remember them all.

        • 21.2.2.1 Amber

So, for you, it’s been cool to meet people from all over the world?

          • 21.2.2.1.1 shel

Yeah, but that’s just a side benefit. I think it says something that they have fans all over the world, though. It was a couple of years before I found all my worldwide friends.

What I liked about the dramas initially was that I rarely had to worry about whether my then-13 yr old was watching, which is not the case with most US television. Also, I like the beginning to end story arc, without endless seasons of them trying to figure how to keep the story going (a la Lost, which I loved at first and hated by the end).

I’ve always like learning about other cultures, and while Kdramas are probably skewed insights into Korean culture, there are some things I’ve learned that are legit: the importance of family, the respect for their elders, work ethic, etc.

          • 21.2.2.1.2 Amber

I know what you mean, I appreciate that I can watch the shows and not have to (embarassedly (and i know that’s not a word)) explain things to anyone who might catch a glimpse of what I’m watching.
I like learning about other cultures as well, which is what drew me to the international channel in high school. Yep, when I first started watching it was without subs, and no, I don’t speak/understand the language.

          • 21.2.2.1.3 Raine

Single seasons is a HUGE draw. Except if its NCIS…

    • 21.3 Mystisith

I’m French. Discovered K dramas totally by accident. Loved it at first sight because of the different cultural codes, and for all the pretty of course. What i love is that absolutely no country is immune to their charm. The fan community is extraordinarily active and grows every day.
Did you take a look at the map which shows where DB readers come from?
      http://whos.amung.us/stats/maps/s1inqcsy/
I mean, even on my baby blog i have readers from 52 countries including Irak, Mexico, Sweden… It’s crazy when you think about it!

      • 21.3.1 Arhazivory

        Cool map. :D

      • 21.3.2 Amber

I’ll be using the map for my multimedia, thank you!

      • 21.3.3 Shukmeister

That was neat, Myst! I went ahead and added that to the bottom of my blog, too.

I discovered I’m getting a lot of hits from Saudi Arabia and Austria…

        • 21.3.3.1 Raine

Isn’t it crazy? I just gape when I see the countries that love K-drama. My current top hitters are US, singapore, malaysia, indonesia, thailand, turkey, philipines…HELLO WORLD PEOPLE!

    • 21.4 Raitei

Philippines. Here, they show a lot of dramas. When I was a kid, it’s all about Mexican dramas. Then they turned to Taiwanese and Chinese dramas. These days, it’s all about Korean dramas.

The thing I probably like about Kdramas is that they generally keep them short. To be honest, I hate it when they make dramas so unnecessarily long that the conflicts/plot points get dragged, characters start acting stupid, and the like. Local dramas here tend to last 3 months to a year. That is loooong, given that they are shown every single day (except weekends). Even if I consider the fact that episodes only last 20-25 mins., I still often find them exhausting (this is probably the reason why I barely watch TV now). Korean dramas often offer interesting and refreshing concepts, and that is one great reason to get hooked.

Although people have different views, Kdrama communities tend to be warm, especially here in Dramabeans. I find it wonderful to read other people’s thoughts, share my ideas and fascinations, and simply rave and go gaga. :)

      • 21.4.1 Amber

I’ve noticed that as well. I love that the online kdrama community tends to be really kind, welcoming, and informative :) . Plus, it’s nice not being the only one squeeing ;)

      • 21.4.2 diorama

Oh yes, I’ve hated the loooooong US series too. I remember loving House the first season…but who wants to watch all eight seasons to get to the end of the story?

        • 21.4.2.1 shel

Well, and really they keep going over the same stuff just to get a few more seasons. I LOVED House at first, but by about season 4, it was all the same. He’s on painkillers, or getting off. He meets a patient, about kills them with all the wrong diagnoses, then cures them after some last second epiphany. It just got old. Lost was great, then started into all kinds of weird at the end. So far Burn Notice has held up, but I haven’t seen the last season.

          • 21.4.2.1.1 alan

mexican dramas or in mexico, telenovelas, me don’t like them U,U i like how korea portray in their dramas people who actually look korean and not foreign, mexico is the opposite, mexicans are brown skinned with features more native, but telenovelas ughhh i hate their racism,my stomach hurt much, most actors are white with european faces U,U is sad,is good how korea have more pride in their features, yeah some korean actors have surgery, but that is much better than actors with faces who look 100% different and foreign

          • 21.4.2.1.2 Shukmeister

            Alan –
I watched a few telenovelas, mostly from Mexico and Brazil, but they didn’t capture my interest as much as the Asian shows. You’re right, I didn’t like the portrayals either.

      • 21.4.3 iZzie :)

Philippines too. :) If I remember it right, Autumn in My Heart was the first kdrama that I paid attention to. But what reeled me in, i.e. started the addiction, was Dae Jang Geum. And then there was Jumong, Full House, Stairway to Heaven, and then Coffee Prince… hit drama after hit drama going on air, until I’ve become addicted enough that I started searching for other dramas on the Internet. I’ve never really recovered since, although lately I’ve been through a year-long drama drought (but that’s another story). Anyway, what I love about kdramas is the relief from the usual story lines, running time, and degree of sex and violence that are in most of our local dramas.

One interesting aspect of kdramas, I think, that sets it apart from those of most other countries is the restraint when it comes to the characters’ romantic relationships. Their meetings don’t automatically lead to mating, and it’s seldom that we see torrid kisses. This also is connected to another aspect of kdramas – the old world rules that still govern the modern setting. There seems to be always a question as to whether to break/bend the rules or not, which makes stories more interesting.

And you’ve got to love the set and location of these dramas. They make full use of the beauty of the country (yes, it looks as good in the dramas as it is in real life) – indoors and outdoors. And then there’s the fashion. ;)

Let’s not forget the food – which isn’t often showcased in other countries’ dramas. I can’t count the times I paused the drama I’m watching to get me instant noodles and then come back to watch and eat at the same time as the characters. And I’ve never been so adventurous when it comes to food until I got curious about Korean food. Together with my friends, I seek out local Korean restaurants just to answer the craving. It has become a regular thing for our gang.

Hmm. Just thinking about kdrama food makes me hungry.

About the community… well, when I think of online Kdrama community, I automatically think “Dramabeans.” I don’t visit other sites anymore. People here are the warmest, funnest, wackiest, wittiest, most welcoming bunch of fellow kdrama addicts I could find. They don’t hold back in sharing their kdrama experiences. Here, I find my strange reactions to kdramas – such as using up an entire roll of tissue paper on tears for one drama episode – to be not-so-strange at all. I found out that I wasn’t the only one living temporary hermit lives on drama marathon days. Some are known to shut out family during such times. ;) I, among others here, also “spread the disease” to family and friends.

As for my non-online friends, well, we’ve been friends before the dramas came – so the chemistry is given, but kdramas give us more grounds to be closer and have fun discovering a culture that is new to us.

I was going to do and am currently gathering opinions and clips for a multimedia presentation. So, if y’all have recs for music video or drama clips I should use, please share!

My suggestion is to take note of the remarkable aspects of kdrama and seek samples of such. I think you should start with the most popular dramas, pick from each genre. One measure of a drama’s popularity and relevance to pop culture is when its sets or locations are preserved or improved by the government and used as tourist/cultural attractions.

        May I suggest the following:

sageuk – Jumong, Dae Jang Geum, Hwang Jin Yi (culture, history, arts…)
comedy/drama – Best Love, Dream High (kpop, hallyu, fashion)
heavy drama – Autumn in My Heart, Stairway to Heaven, Winter Sonata (sceneries, big name actors)

I’ll think of more dramas for you.
In the meantime, please excuse me… I think I still have a pack of ramyun in my pantry. ;)

        • 21.4.3.1 Amber

Thank you muchly! I’ll try to find some good clips of those to incorporate into the presentation.

      • 21.4.4 Laya

That’s one thing I like about K-dramas too– we know when they will end, plus they air only twice a week. Recapping a Filipino drama is so exhausting– I got hypertension halfway through Amaya.

All I could think was that I should be thankful it wasn’t the original Mara Clara :D

        • 21.4.4.1 iZzie :)

Haha! Amaya… I would’ve liked it if they didn’t include supernatural stuff. :P

And i remember how my friends and i watched the actors of the original mara clara grow old and change physique thru its years of airing. Alas i didn’t have the viewing stamina to wait until the freaking diary was found, which accdg to friends, was just sitting on top of a dusty cabinet. That source of all the makjang mischiefs. :P

          • 21.4.4.1.1 Laya

But Izzie, if you grew up in the province, that supernatural stuff is always there! :) ) I grew up with stories of aswang, kapre, tikbalang, tiyanak, etc. When we were kids, the parents took us to the hilot when we were sick and only to the doctor when the hilot said they should. It’s part of our culture, just like the fairy tales and folk tales in other countries.

LOL that cabinet. I don’t have any plausible explanation for that diary up to now except that it was sitting in everyone’s blind spot (every one of the characters, that is, not the audience).

          • 21.4.4.1.2 iZzie :)

LOL. I grew up in the province too, and old people won’t stop at any story to frighten the kids just to keep them from playing under the moonlight. :) I was also told that I have “usog,” and was accused of causing a few people to fall sick – dizzy and vomiting – after making eye contact with them on a stressful day. And then their symptoms were instantly gone after I touched their forehead and tummies. Sometimes I believe it, sometimes I don’t.

As for Amaya, I expected it to be done with a purely historical, more realistic approach. The way Amaya was done reminded me much of Encantadia, where the magical things were more fitting. But yeah, as you’ve said, the supernatural stuff is very much part of our culture, especially for the tribes. It’s just that I’ve been waiting for an Urduja-like story to be done on tv, and I thought Amaya was it. I’d be more okay with the inclusion of supernatural stuff were Amaya advertised as a Pinoy folklore-based drama – which brings my thoughts to Lam-Ang. Oh, thank goodness they didn’t pick Aljur to do it! I was wishing for an actor the likes of Raymart of decades ago (remember Mumbaki?) to do it, and along came Rocco Nacino who has decent acting abilities. Alas, it’s not a series, but a movie. Haha! Is it right that I’m wishing for a Florante at Laura tv series now?

And the cabinet… LOL. LOL. Did they have the cabinet too in the recent mara clara series? I think what happened there is akin to Murphy’s Law. The things you need don’t show up when you need them.

    • 21.5 Leaf

Well my journey went Anime (then Manga) then Taiwanese Live action versions of Manga and then Korean Live Action version and now anything!! :D

I live in boring monocultural area (I am not even joking when I say that I could count the number of non white people within a 100 miles on one hand :( I hate it there) which also as quite a lot of prejudice so apart from one girl who I discovered liked k pop (we are now best friends!) there was no one who I could talk to about Hallyu stuff.

Fortunately now I am at Uni where there are many people from all over the world!! I have made lots of good friends and have joined the Oriental Drama Apprieciation Society there. We are a group from all over the world (I am the only white girl though) but predominently Danish Somalians. We meet up and fangirl and eat Kimchi fried rice <3 Everyone is super super nice!!! It's really nice to have a community of people with similar interests and not just have closed minded stupid people around haha.

      • 21.5.1 Amber

I used to live in an area that was very mixed ethnically. Koreans, Ethiopians, Russians, Vietnamese, Mexican, Brazilian, Chinese, you name it! I had to move back home recently, and, wow, shock! WHITE PEOPLE EVERYWHERE. It’s so weird!
I like anime as well, but I got into it about the same time as I discovered drama. My fave anime is Last Exile because it’s so very pretty.

        • 21.5.1.1 shel

I am lucky to live in a very culturally diverse part of California. The closest town of any size is probably 30K people. Driving down the “main street” you can see Vietnamese, Filipino, Salvadorean, Korean, Chinese, Indian food. Not just restaurants, many specialty groceries: Hankook Market, Indian-Pakistani apparel, Filipino market, Asian Market (also owned by Koreans) Mexican market, etc etc. I have friends here from Fiji, Jordan, Korea, Armenia, Pakistan, India, Tonga, Thailand, Romania, Mexico….

Part of it may be that there is a Defense Language Institute here and they prefer native speakers to teach. My Arabic and Korean friends are all teachers there.

    • 21.6 Amber

I love when a school assignment turns fun! Wish I didn’t have school stuff going on today *sigh* oh well.

    • 21.7 Shukmeister

I’m from Virginia in USA. My first drama was “Bad Guy” on Hulu. I love Japanese anime but was in a bit of a slump with nothing new that caught my eye. Saw “Korean Drama” under the Genres tab and got hooked. That was slightly less than 2 years ago.

My first favorite (and still near the top) is Secret Garden. I found Dramabeans, read the recap of the first couple of episodes, and fell in love with the song “Watching / Looking” which is the first K-song I downloaded.

It was much later when I de-lurked and began commenting here.

I enjoy the interaction from screenfriends from all over the world, have shared recipes, fears, medical issues, bad jokes, good times, relationship stories, and a plethora of other topics as well as choco abs, showers scenes, bad scripts, and cute couples.

I’ve shared drinks at Bourbon’s virtual p’macha, and watched movies together during Movie Noona night.

I think the online KDrama shrinks the differences between individuals and cultures while expanding your worldview more profoundly than Google Earth did with satellite shots.

Hopefully I didn’t wax too rhapsodic, but that is a problem for writers…lol

      • 21.7.1 Amber

Considering that I have made such a last minute change (presentation is tuesday) waxing rhapsodic is extremely helpful! any suggestions for clips I should show in class?

        • 21.7.1.1 Shukmeister

Hmm, that’s a toughie. Several of our regulars make their own clips, but that’s indicative of the shows, not the network.

Maybe you could look at the Six Degrees of Separation / Small World Phenomenon. For instance, there’s a bunch of us who started blogs just because of the people we met when talking about Asian drama.

My blog is a long-winded tale spun around standard KDrama elements and starring many of the OT regulars.

Mystisith started her recapping blog with encouragement from this community.

Raine met Deeno and now they recap together on alternate episodes on either/both their blogs.

Several individuals have met face to face after first connecting over KDramas, specifically our California contingent.

Those kind of connections might be interesting to talk about, too.

          • 21.7.1.1.1 Amber

Well, I was thinking of clips or screencaps from shows to give people an idea (only one fellow fan in my class) of what the Hallyu wave is about. for kpop I’m thinking I’ll play some of the earworms and viral hits. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of my classmates see “Bubble Pop” and say “Wait, I’ve seen that!” and the reason I’ve been asking for anecdotal stuff is to show what the fan community is like. Both together should give me a good presentation!

          • 21.7.1.1.2 Mystisith

@ Amber: For Kpop, just show the fanvids of people “watching Fantastic Baby for the first time”. :)

          • 21.7.1.1.3 Amber

            @mystisith Excellent idea!!

          • 21.7.1.1.4 Shukmeister

LOL – I was thinking “Fantastic Baby” too, both the original and some of the fun covers.

          • 21.7.1.1.5 Amber

so, at this point I’ve filled 18 minutes, and haven’t even put in any drama clips. I’m thinking I’m going to end with Fantastic Baby instead of Nobody.

      • 21.7.2 Ivoire

Hi Shukmeister, I was looking for that song, “Watching/looking” on youtube and I didn’t find it. Who sang it and is it on the OST of Secret Garden? Thanks!

        • 21.7.2.1 Shukmeister

          Iv!

The song is sung by Yoon Sang Hung, and it is on the SeGa OST.

Thanks! I will look for it again.

      Representin’ Canada!!

During undergrad I’d watched a few K-movies but it wasn’t until my final semester of grad school that I watched my first ever K-drama!! It’s been almost 2 years since, and I love it. Am totally out of the loop vis-a-vis American popular culture and entertainment!

I’ve already shared this in TK2H thread but since it pertains to your topic I’ll share it here as well. Last week I was at the grocery store and a bunch of girls ahead of me were discussing how hot Seung-gi is in TK2H….I joined them and we collectively squealed and spazzed over him. The cashier and the other customers thought we had lost our minds. And we did!! The cashier asked who were we spazzing over and her face was major LOLS when we confided he was a K-actor!! We did share his identity. Gotta spread the love!! What really is awesome is that a bunch of Canadian girls were spazzing over a K-actor and not one of us was of SE/E Asian descent!! hehee

      • 21.8.1 Amber

Canada for the win! (my dad’s Canadian)
I love finding random fellow fans. Happened in the class I’m currently in. We ended up sitting together and discovered we both loved kdrama. She’s taken Korean here, and I’m going to be taking it in the fall, so now, thanks to kdrama, I have a tutor! ;)
I’m spreading the love with movies rather than dramas, because people are more likely to give one movie a try than multiple eps. My current fave to recommend (aka force my friends to watch) is “Head”

        • 21.8.1.1 Shukmeister

“A Chilling Romance” is my #1 fave this year.

          • 21.8.1.1.1 Carinne

I second that! And its OST is great too. (。✪‿✪。)

      • 21.8.2 Ivoire

Hi Saima, what does LOLS mean, please? :-)

        • 21.8.2.1 Amber

“major LOLS” means it was really funny. LOL means laugh out loud, so LOLS is something that makes you laugh out loud (at least from my understanding)

        • 21.8.2.2 Saima

          @Ivoire:

Amber’s right! The capitalization was used to highlight how tickled us girls were at her reaction upon being told that we were swooning & spazzing on a K-actor and NOT a Hollywood celeb!!

          :D

        • 21.8.2.3 Ivoire

Thank you girls, very helpful explanation…

    • 21.9 diorama

Hmmm, from California, formerly India. And now I watch more Kdramas than US or Indian film combined.

My cousin got me started on Goong, after a Chinese friend of hers got her started…and now I’m even more of an addict than both of them. I love the community here! It’s the only place where I can spazz about dramas with the people who actually watch them :) There are so many countries represented here, it’s fantastic.

      • 21.9.1 Amber

But Bollywood is so fun and pretty and awesome! But, yeah, I like kdrama better as well ;) .

        • 21.9.1.1 Saima

Bollywood USED to be fun (at least to me)! I’m of Indian descent and the last (and only!!) B-movie I must’ve watched was earlier this year. I don’t think I watched anything last year!! lulz

          • 21.9.1.1.1 Amber

I’ll admit, I haven’t had many opportunities to watch anything new in a long time (it’s been more of an availibility thing for me), so I don’t know if I’d enjoy anything current. :)

    • 21.10 mellowyel

From Nigeria, but at grad school in the US. Got into k-pop through a friend (also Nigerian but with many Asian friends). First song was Abracadabra – I was intrigued by the video and of course the song was ridiculously catchy. I looked for more music, and then happened upon allkpop and indiefulrok and Soribada (before it shut down streaming music for foreigners) and the rest is history. Now I listen to all kinds of Korean music – pop, indie, rock, etc. The k-pop community is a mixed bag, but I have found a subset of it who aren’t deranged fans, but who are willing to look at the music and the package critically, like the people here on DB.

First k-drama was Personal Taste, which I watched after seeing it mentioned on Dramabeans. I love the DB community because it’s very diverse and welcoming. I remember being so excited when I saw another Nigerian on here, though I’ve forgotten her screenname and haven’t heard from her in a minute. (Hi, if you’re still here!). I also love that it’s willing to entertain both shameless fangirling/fanboying and more critical discussions of dramas and movies and culture.

In general, I find the online K-culture fandom to be a little more open-minded than the people I encounter in everyday life, which is refreshing. because so many of us in the non-Korean-speaking section of it are, well, not Korean, it’s cool to see everyone finding something to relate to in a culture that’s foreign to them, and not just closing off to it because it’s unfamiliar. I particularly enjoy seeing the parallels between Korean culture and mine – a huge emphasis on the importance of family and respect for elders, ridiculously dramatic storylines (Nigerian movies are like k-drama specials, only with the makjang of 50 episodes packeed into 4+ hours) etc. The internet has definitely been a huge part of why I’m into Korean culture – the downside of this being that now I can’t do without internet, lest I go into drama and culture withdrawal, lol.

      • 21.10.1 Amber

Thank you for responding! This is really helpful. Any suggestions for kpop clips I should show in my presentation?

        • 21.10.1.1 mellowyel

probably the ones from bands that have gotten a lot of international coverage recently – Wonder Girls (toured with Beiber, TV movie on Teen Nick); Big Bang; Girls Generation; Super Junior’s “Sorry Sorry” (I heard this was one of the first big hits internationally). You could also include footage from the Google K-pop concert that’s happening this weekend – it’s livestreaming on Monday but there’ll also be interviews the day before via Google+ hangouts

          • 21.10.1.1.1 Amber

I’m leading the presentation with “Sorry, Sorry” actually :) . I’m also thinking of using HyunA’s “Bubble Pop” because it was such a viral hit. For Wonder Girls I’d probably use…”Nobody”…hmmm…now you’ve got me thinking more specifically about what vids I’m going to show. Thank you!

      • 21.10.2 Ivoire

Hi Mellowyel, I am from Cameroon, your next door neighbor :-) . Who sang “Abracadabra,” please? (I looked for it on youtube, but I wasn’t sure what to look for because other things came up as well).

        • 21.10.2.1 Shukmeister

          Iv -

If you are talking about the song from the 80′s in US, that would Steve Miller Band. As for a K-Drama, I don’tknow.

          • 21.10.2.1.1 Ivoire

Shuk, thanks for the info about Steve Miller, but I think Mellowyel was referring to a K-pop song. I think I saw an artist or two who sang the song on youtube (one or two choices as K-pop artists) but I wasn’t sure who she was referring to, because she didn’t give a name. I am pretty sure she was referring to a K-pop song, if you read the beginning of her post.
I am not as much into K-pop as I am into Kdramas OSTs, so when songs are mentioned here, I like to listen to them to see if I like them or the artist.

I am from Connecticut. I always liked Asian horror movies and was surfing around and stumbled on Goong and that was it for me. I found Dramabeans very quickly after that but it was a few months before I began participating in OT – which (for me) went from being a Friday morning thing to a couple of FB friends and an honorary little sister who emails and then we came up with the movie noonas and now there’s this whole twitter explosion, so…it’s really expanded. I love that we share so much of our worlds, however different they might be. I learn so much from everyone and receive so much affection everywhere – even though I have a close knit circle of friends and family IRL and am quite satisfied with that, it enriches my life to have this global community to share an interest with, and develop new interests as well.

      • 21.11.1 Amber

Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. Can you recommend any drama, movie, or kpop clips that might enrich my presentation? I want to show more than my personal faves, but I don’t have the time to show clips from every show out there ;)

        • 21.11.1.1 JoAnne

Unfortunately most of the clips I see on Youtube are ‘All the Kiss Scenes from..’ or ‘Best KPop Abs’ or something like that.

You could look for clips from Goong (costuming, palaces), Kimchi Family (OMG food porn), the scenes in Heartstrings where they play the gayageum with modern instruments – these are all things that got lots of people interessted in and looking for more information on Korean culture.

There’s also lots of people who found KPop in general after searching for OSTs on Youtube, since K-Drama is good about getting popular singers as well as studio musicians to create music for dramas, especially Idol dramas – and now Girl’s Generation has been on David Letterman, SMTown has done concerts in LA and NY, Big Bang is hooking up with Live Nation on the first ever world tour of an Asian boy band after winning some huge MTV world award, and they just ran a world-wide contest for covers of songs off Alive – people from dozens of countries participated. (Look for the BigBang channel on Youtube.) Rain won an MTV award for being the biggest bad ass ever in Ninja Assassin a few years ago, and Stephen Colbert did a few bits about that on his show – you can see those on Youtube, too.

          • 21.11.1.1.1 JoAnne

Also on Youtube – check out the channel for Talk to Me in Korean (the guy’s name is Hyun Woo Sun – really Sun Hyun Woo) – it’s a fascinating business model, first of all, that capitalizes on the interest in all things Korean these days. In particular they have a regular segment where they talk about ‘Korean Drama Phrases’ – an acknowledgement of the gateway drug if I ever saw one.

Another to check would be KWOW on Youtube. More language education, and clearly inspired by us drama lovers.

On PBS there’s the Kimchi Chronicles – I think her name is Marja Vongerichten? Married to a big time chef, half Korean, adopted to US – the show chronicles her travels in Korea and is food-based. Wouldn’t be possible if people weren’t fascinated with the region and the food.

          • 21.11.1.1.2 Amber

thanks muchly! I’m feeling less worried about being able to fill the time ;)

      Hi Amber!

I am from California. I became familiar with k-ent through kpop way back in 1999 while i was in middle school/high school but I didn’t get into kdramas till 2003. I can’t remember if it was taiwanese dramas ( I think I was watching Mars and Meteor Garden at the time) that led me to kdramas but I remember stumbling onto “Autumn in my heart” and than “Attic Cat” and enjoying the immensely. Finding episodes online for those dramas led me to other dramas and thats where it began. I didn’t have cable in college (wasn’t home enough to see the point in having tv) so my entertainment came from the internet. What drew me into kdramas though was that they had for the most part a defined story in a finite amount of episodes. One of my main gripes with american television is that things go on and on forever and sometimes I just want a beginning and a defined end.

What I like about the kdrama community is that unlike the kpop international community, the people tend to be more mature and a bit older (in their late teens to even their 30s and above) . When I go on sites like dramabeans, cadence, or koalasplayground there is often actual intelligent discussion about the drama rather than “oh my god my oppa is so hot” that I see all of the time in the kpop community.

      • 21.12.1 Amber

which isn’t to say “hot oppa” convos don’t happen here ;) . I’ll ask you the same thing I’m asking everyone I can think of, what clips should I show? K-ent of any form! I’m definitely going to show “Bubble Pop” (since it went viral and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of my classmates have seen it) and “Sorry, Sorry” (because I must spread the earworm!). I’m going back and forth on if I’m going to do screencaps, clips, or both for movies and drama.

    • 21.13 kewbie

I’m from Atlanta, GA (not orginally, but this is where I live now). What drew me to k-drama? My husband’s college friend is Korean and she had mentioned on FB how much she enjoyed watching “Boys Over Flowers”. I asked her about it and she highly recommended it. At that time I didn’t really know where to watch k-dramas. Two years later, I found Boys Over Flowers on Hulu.com and the rest is history. I marathoned all 25 episodes in like…3-4 days. Crazy. I found Dramabeans and Soompi not too long afterwards via Google while looking up BOF stuff. As far as what I like about the community, well to be honest I don’t have many friends here in ATL, even though I’ve been living here for 6 years now, and I tend to get a little gung-ho about something I’m very interested it, so it was actually kind of a relief to find Dramabeans and all the k-drama related sites. For once I didn’t feel like a weirdo for liking what I liked. Plus I have to say the people that I’ve met on this site in particular are really lovely, so that makes it easier to share our common interests. I’m finding, however, that I need to watch more dramas to keep up with a lot of folks here, but otherwise, it’s been really fun chatting everyone up about what’s on their tv/computer lately.

      Good luck with your project!

      • 21.13.1 Amber

lol, I’ve given up trying to keep up with folks. I have too much to get through with school. I need to find more excuses to incorporate Kdrama and such into my classwork. I’m getting better at it ;) . The last thing I did like this was write a review for the movie “Head” for my English class. Got to rewatch and received an A ;)

    • 21.14 SweetiePie54

Ohhhh. Your class sounds interesting. I’m from Los Angeles. I got into K-Dramas through K-Pop which I got into when Perez Hilton posted the Super Junior “Sorry Sorry” music video on his website. The song got stuck in my head so I googled SJ and started listening to them and then other artists in K-Pop which led to K-Variety (Star Golden Bell, how I miss you) and that led to watching K-Dramas. My first K-Drama was The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry but it was when I googled Boys Over Flowers that I found Dramabeans.

I like watching K-Dramas because they can feed my overactive imagination sometimes. The drama is that much more dramatic and the romantic declarations are that much more romantic etc etc. I also love that I can get through a 16-20 episode drama in a couple of months instead of waiting 9 months to get through a single season of a tv show. Because it moves so quickly, I’m not left agonizing for months on end about what is going to happen. I agonize for a couple of months and then on to the next. :)

If you haven’t already come across them, below are a couple of links that may help you in your research. At Thundie’s Prattle there is a post where people (including myself) shared how we got into dramas and what was the drama that brought us into this fantastic and sometimes crazy world etc etc.

      http://thundiesprattle.com/2011/11/30/my-personal-train-wreck/

Here is a link from Dodo’s Bell Jar where people (again myself included…I have no life) share why they love K-Dramas.

      http://endodo4ever.wordpress.com/2012/01/22/pensive-ponderings-about-korean-dramas/

Hope this help and good luck with your project!

      • 21.14.1 Amber

Thank for the links! And this class is *awesome*. To give you an idea, my teacher did her doctoral thesis on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

        • 21.14.1.1 SweetiePie54

I NEED TO MEET YOUR TEACHER!!!! Doctoral Thesis on Buffy- one of the greatest TV shows in the history of the world! That’s AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

          I’m a bit of a Buffy fan if you couldn’t tell :)

And she’s a Whovian. BEST. TEACHER. EVER.

    • 21.15 Laya

I’m from the Philippines. Got addicted rather late, actually– after Legend, I didn’t follow another K-drama until the third time (yes, third) Full House was shown on local TV, then after that, Jumong. I think it was the sageuks that got me first, then the rom-coms. I didn’t consider myself addicted until Shining Inheritance (and that’s all Lee Seung Gi’s fault for being so cute). Then Queen Seon Deok (and it became Kim Nam Gil’s fault that I’m his fan for life :D ). I didn’t start marathoning dramas online till Personal Taste, though– got too impatient with local TV and decided to look it up online. Then started collecting DVDs (ssssh), stumbled on this site by accident– Dramaholics Anonymous, only we’re feeding the addiction, not curing it! LOL. Then I started being curious about Korean culture– clothes, food– and started self-studying Hangul and reading up on Korean history. And I just bought a jar of kimchi today because I’ve been craving for it (the whole family doesn’t like the smell, but I love it).

I like this community because people are so nice, and I learn a lot about Korean culture– why people in the dramas act a certain way, etc., that I wouldn’t have known if I were just watching it on local TV without the added input from DB. Plus, I learn about other dramas that I should check out, and not just Korean dramas. And JB’s recaps are teaching me how to dissect a drama’s elements.

      • 21.15.1 Amber

In spite of growing up in areas with a lot of Korean immigrants… I have never eaten kimchi! I should rectify that one of these days…

    • 21.16 rainerust

Odd. I went through the list and not a single Singaporean/Malaysian when I’m pretty sure there’re loads of them hanging around DB. So there you go – two more nationalities you can add to your list. Er, I’m a bit of both – it’s a long story, but not unusual in this part of town.

If I had to trace my long-standing love affair with kdramas, it would really have started back when I was a child and staying up late to catch all the late night Japanese and Korean dramas…but it only really became an addiction in university days!

What drew me to the DB community in particular was that even though most people here watch ‘popular’ dramas, the DB community doesn’t just WATCH it – JB and GF provide their own insights into the dramas, and many of the usual commenters (some of whom have…stopped commenting I think) offer nuggets of wisdom which aren’t covered by the recaps. So it’s partly educational, partly because I can’t teleport or warp time so recaps are really the way to go, and mostly because everyone here loves the same thing I do so there’s warmth in sharing. People care.

Okay, and I really love QIHM, and would’ve suggested the trailer as something you could show (dichotomy between Joseon era / modern times, but drawn together by a common link = sounds like us much?) but that’s really because of my bias and not because it’s actually useful HAHA.

All the best for your project!!

      • 21.16.1 Shukmeister

Rainerust – Yay, another malaysian-type person. By any chance, so you live anywhere near Sarawak?

    • 21.17 Jenlikeskettlecorn

I’m an Australian born Korean, so I’ve grown up with Korean dramas to some degree, although honestly I didn’t take a whole lot of interest in it until the last couple of years when I started working with a lot of Korean people.

The first drama that really got me hooked was ‘My name is Kim Samsoon’, which my best friend, my sister and my brother in law (who is an American, not Asian at all) marathoned over a 4th of July weekend, with terrible subtitles. This didn’t immediately get me hooked onto more dramas though, mainly because access to K-dramas wasn’t as easy as it is now.

My other best friend is 3/4 Japanese and due to the ‘hallyu’ wave I guess and her frequent trips to Japan, she knows a lot a little bit about Korean dramas and idols and weirdly she got me more interested in Korean entertainment as well.

Finally, a really good friend from university (who is Australian) became really interested in Korean cinema- in a large part due to the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), which has had screened quite a few Korean films in the past few years (it has had a fairly solid Asian cinema program). Her interest definitely sparked my own and it just went from there.

So funnily enough, even though I’m Korean, it was other people’s interest in Korean culture and entertainment that got me interested enough to follow it up.

Hope some of this is helpful to you Amber.

      • 21.17.1 Amber

Everyone has been helpful :) . Though…Heh, I ended up hitting almost 40 minutes and remembering there are other people who have to do presentations too *sheepish*. So, yeah, did not get to put nearly as much in there as I was hoping for.

  22. 22 Arhazivory

It’s my 27th birthday today and at 12am it found me watching TK2H and eating ice cream and freshly made muffins (big sister did that before bed). I’m thanking God for another year and looking forward to many more years of kdrama watching. :D

So, I’m waiting to finish up all these many currently airing dramas that I’m watching right now. And I’ll be more disciplined next time. After this I’m only going to watch Bridal Mask live because there are three monsters thatg have been sitting on my hard drive for the last 1-2 years that are begging me to just watch them already.

    1. Jumong
    2. Kingdom of the Winds
    3. Giant (recently added)

So after I make a brief run to jdrama land (Keizoku 1 and 2), I’ll tackle those monsters. But…which one should I watch first? =O

    • 22.1 shel

      Happy happy birthday!!!!!

        Thanks Shel. :D

    • 22.2 SweetiePie54

Happy Birthday! I am about halfway through Giant and I love it. It’s really good! I haven’t seen Jumong or Kingdom of the Winds (yet) but I have heard good things about Jumong. My vote is Giant though ;)

      • 22.2.1 Arhazivory

Thanks~!! That’s my problem. lol…everyone has good things to say about all of them. I should probably put the names in a hat and draw out one.

    • 22.3 Amber

      Happy birthday! hope it’s *fantastic*!

      • 22.3.1 Arhazivory

It is so far. Except daddy just said to the me who’s an adult ‘Because its your birthday, you don’t plan to wash the dishes.’

So…I’m off to do that now. And yeah, I still call him ‘daddy’. -_-’

        • 22.3.1.1 shel

I still call my daddy that and I’m 52. Oh wait, 53. I’m so old I have to do the math, lol.

          • 22.3.1.1.1 Arhazivory

I still do the math sometimes. By mid-year I’ll start forgetting my age again. lol.

        • 22.3.1.2 Amber

Ditto. Though sometimes I call him daddio when I’m being a smart ass (which is often)

          • 22.3.1.2.1 Arhazivory

Daddio…I can imagine it being said ‘smart ass’ style. Maybe I should try that.

          • 22.3.1.2.2 Amber

Depends on how good his sense of humour is!

    • 22.4 John

      Haven’t seen Giant.

I have seen Jumong. It’s a long series. A bit draggy towards the end but over all a good series.

Han Hye-jin is so pretty, (my bias)

Song Il Gook .. Everything I’ve seen him in since I hear Jumong when he speaks.

    • 22.5 Shukmeister

Happy Birthday!! Glad you could share it with us.

      Happy Birthday!!!

I am watching Jumong now… in between subbed episodes of K2H and RTP. I am really enjoying it. The story has a lot of twists, as do most historical dramas. Song Il Kook is fab!

I dropped baker king because of the young tak gu was no yo jin gu! I vote for Giant.

    • 22.12 Arhazivory

Thank you all for the birthday wishes and suggestions. THere’s more talk of Jumong and Giant than Kingdom so now I know that Kingdom will be third on the list. lol.

      Happy Birthday!

    • 22.14 rainerust

      Happy birthday!

Jumong. I have a soft spot for it. Although I have to admit I never got around to finishing it… but considering I never watch anything beyond 24 episodes, that’s not too much of a stretch… I didn’t even finish Smile, You, which I absolutely freakin’ loved.

  23. 23 zgznoona

    Happy OT wonderful people!!!
Not much to say this week, since the most interesting thing for me thins month will be happening next Friday (I’ll get home after six months :) )
Any ways the other day I decided to try the Shinhwa Show, it was ep8, I believe, some kind of kids special. But what got me wonder is that the voice of the PD at the end of the episode, while they were paying a penalty, it sounded exactly like Na PD’s voice. Maybe is that I miss him, because I went to the show’s website and couldn’t find his name. Does anyone know what Na PD is up to after leaving 1N2D?

    • 23.1 Arhazivory

Yes! There was a pic of him out the other day. He gave a lecture to some District Officers at a Univ and someone from there posted pics. I’ll see if I can find it.

I was ridiculously happy to see him.

      • 23.1.1 Arhazivory

Wow. Found them really quick I hope G1World doesn’t mind but they’re pics she posted on twitter:

          YAY! Thanks
Even though he was the PD, he was another star of the 1st season
I miss him and Eun Ji-won so much

          • 23.1.1.1.1 Arhazivory

Me too. *sniffles* We can see Eun Ji Won again easily but with Na PD, we have to wait for pics like that to come up.

          • 23.1.1.1.2 zgznoona

He’s coming back with and some kind of idol drama, isn’t he? Lest cross fingers for that one

Yeah. I’ll cross my fingers and hope its good. A sitcom is really long and that’s a lot of time to invest in.

  24. 24 Yumi

    Good morning.

I have a question for the community about something I’ve been thinking about since I began watching k-drama. I’ve been wondering if anyone else has notice it and have on opinion.

The visual vocabulary of k-drama’s–two issues.

    1) Shot Matching–have you ever been watching a k-drama and when the characters are in a two-shot, say from waist up or a tighter shot they seem to be in easy touching distance of each other, but when the camera pull back they seem to be a block away from each other. I can’t tell if this is bad filming, lazy editing or a different cultural aesthetics. But this effects is disorienting to me and happens so frequently that I can’t believe it is a result of a lack of ability.
I also find it hard to see it as a choice, since it never ADDS anything to what is going on.

    2) The Point-of-View Shot–in Western visual vocabulary when something is filmed from behind an obstacle, i.e. a tree, outside a window looking in, it is often mean to signify the point of view of someone unseen within the story, your stalker, your frighten kid, etc. But I notice that k-drama film from behind visual obstacles frequently and it rarely if ever signify a point-of-view. Any idea why this is done?

    • 24.1 Llamaesque

I’m not sure why the Point-of-View-Shot is done differently in Kdrama, but it’s crazy abused in Kimchi Family, which I’m watching right now. In the middle of two characters having the most mundane of conversations, suddenly the camera will be filming them through a window or from behind a tree or something, with no evident rhyme or reason. I’ve noticed this approach in other Korean dramas, but this one uses it so often it’s actually annoying. I might have liked it if it only happened at the central Korean restaurant, which would have made it seem like the building was a character—but this show hardly lets a scene go by without using this angle. Maybe it’s just an attempt to make things more visually interesting? As a director it must get kind of old forever shooting two people talking, which is 80 percent of every Kdrama…

      • 24.1.1 shel

I actually loved the photography in FF. I think it’s an artistic license thing. I thought that it really added to the feeling.

      • 24.1.2 ahjummabunny

don’t pick on my fermentation family! that shot is an invitation!

        • 24.1.2.1 Llamaesque

I’m not picking on it…I actually really like the show. It’s just that a new peeping-tom camera angle every 45 seconds seems a wee bit unnecessary =X

I suspect in this case it’s compensating for a tiny set—the restaurant’s interior is so little, they had to get imaginative about how they’d film people in it.

      • 24.1.3 Hillary

I absolutely loved the cinematography in Fermentation Family.

      • 24.1.4 Yumi

I noticed that in Kimchi Family. And it was weird because iKF was a drama where people hovered and spied, but the spying was not related to the camera shot.

thanks for taking the time to answer.

    • 24.2 Arhazivory

I agree on both points. They look really close but then when the camera pans out they’re far apart and sometimes I think someone is watching the person because they’re being looked at from the bushes….but then there’s no one. -_-’

      • 24.2.1 JoAnne

Ha! I only really noticed that in the final scenses of Flower Boy Ramyun Shop but it was quite striking and I still think about it…seemed that strange to me.

      • 24.2.2 Yumi

Perhaps in K-drama it’s the “OMO someone’s watching shot–ah, fooled you!”

    • 24.3 Cynthia

      Interesting questions, Yumi.

?#1 – It is disconcerting to see these proximity shots – Personally, I think it has to do with the Asian take on personal space. There seems to be a distinct awareness of maintaining personal space between individuals (common in a society where a great majority of the citizens live cheek to jowl – space is prized) – the ‘Pull-Away’ shot in dramas emphasize this, plus those shots generally highlight the location (think Han River filming with the bridge). Kind of a’two-fer’.

?#2 – As for the ‘Point of View’ shot, personally, I think it’s a tool the PD uses to ensure attention to the immediate dialogue – a refocusing, if you will, especially if a monologue is going on a bit long.
The only different use I can think of was in A Thousand Day Promise – there, it signified isolation and the compartmentalization of a memory/thought process being gradually destroyed. It was used very effectively throughout the drama.
Of course, these are only my opinions – I could be wrong… :)

      • 24.3.1 Yumi

        thanks for responding.

Happy Friday everyone! Next week is finale for K2H. Really don’t want it to end, this drama made me suffer more than moonsun. Just finished the last 2 episodes, and I must say k2h has really got me hooked. Really amazed at how good the plot, directing, cinematography is and this drama deserves awards. The last 2 episodes totally killed me and they really sure know how to stop at cliffhangers! thankfully we get to see some developments with our second leads which makes me happy :)

Meanwhile, to cure my addiction to K2H, I’ve been watching 1N2D with our male lead in it. It really cracks me up and hopefully it will last me till wed!

    • 25.1 Arhazivory

I plan to go back to the 50s eps of 1N2D today. I also miss seeing our maknae laughing and being carefree when he was still a puppy.

I’ve been watching 1n2d as well! To wean myself off of TK2H by watching more Seung-gi!! heheeee

  27. 27 kopytko

    Hi Everybody!
This week was marked by the first time I watched a kdrama on an actual TV rather than computer – it’s all thanks to digital broadcast – we had to change some tv equipment and I came across arirang tv. The drama in question was Super Rookie and it seems not so bad. BUT it feels so weird to look at a tv with tv-like quality and stuff. I actually like it better on my good old laptop. Dramas look more like cimema films rather than cheap tv programmes when watched on my computer. The other thing is dramas on arirang aren’t that abundant :)

As for my watching experiences per se – I’m head over heels for QIM – just lovely. I want more smart and really charming scholars with badass fighting skills. And that smile. What I also like is that this show is also idiocy-free. Something worth noticing.

I have also seen Can Love Become Money ep3 but I watched it too late at night and need some recap to process it fully (Hi Mysti!).

I would like to note that I am not really looking forward neither to I Do, I Do nor Big. I cannot really put my finger on what actually discourages me – generic stories or AGAIN lousy marketing job?

    Have a lovely weekend!

    • 27.1 kopytko

I forgot to add that the villain in QIM is none other than the Photographer Guy (hot! hot!) from I Need Romance. Nice to see him in a less positive light.

    • 27.2 Shukmeister

      Hey Kopy!

I actually hook my lappy to my flatscreen using a HDMI cable, so I watch them large and in charge – lol. My laptop is one of the larger ones (17″ screen), so I’ll watch something while cooking in the kitchen as well.

I listen to airang radio on XM Korea Today in my car (I have a 40-minute commute to work), specifically Catch the Hallyu Wave.

QIM is daebaek! I never watched ADK (forever grateful JoAnne, Cynthia!), so this is my first JHW show. There’s some great youtube stuff from his band, too, if you need some filler between epis.

      • 27.2.1 diorama

I wish I could get kradio where I live, I’ve got a 40-minute commute too.

And QIM, is just love love love right now.

        • 27.2.1.1 Shukmeister

I actually got XM for the 24-hour NASCAR channel, but now I’m all over the dial!

      • 27.2.2 kopytko

A silly question: What is the name of JHW’s band?

If you like sweets I recommend Invincible Lee Pyung Kang. He was such a hilarious and cute character. But there isn’t really much more about that drama: funny, light and feelgood.

On a side: I will be gratefull if you shorten ny nick in any other way, KOPY is not a nice word in my language but KOP is totally fine ;) (not that I’m offended, don’t wory)

        • 27.2.2.1 Saa

JHW is the lead guitaristy in the band The Nuts. LISTEN TO “SARANG EH BABO (FOOL OF LOVE)”!! And also listen to his solo album, Crescendo. His voice makes me melt in “Baby Elephant”~<3 "Kid" is also good~

  28. 28 Licia

Hey Whats Up OT. I’ve been absent these last 4 OTs.
So to catch up on all the little conversations I could have had I put all in a list
    Of: Licia’s Top Honorable Mentions

In at #7 is Big Bang fan Youtube Cover contest.
Well a few weeks back I mentioned that someone from my area was in the contest and she actually won in the singing category. She wasn’t 1st place in the whole competition which meant you fly to Korea an tour YG office but apparently she signed a contract with a company in Korea and just flew there yesterday. I feel excited because she’s someone from the same little city as me pursing her dreams and that’s always encouraging.

Honorable Mention # 6 Crashing birds
I live in the Bay Area and our weather has been up and down this spring so things bloomed late, anyway my neighbor’s cherry tree hangs over our backyard because it so huge and the birds go crazy for this stuff and I swear every bird in the area starts yapping at 5am flying back there. So I am in the kitchen and BOOM I hear this loud crashing noise. It’s the bird of course flying into the window. Scared me at first. But this poor bird did this for about a minute over and over. But what’s funny is that after it flew into the window it would go back for a piece of cherry chew and then fly back into the window, cause I guess after crashing your head into glass nothings better then some sweet cherries. I did feel really bad for it though.

Honorable Mention # 5 Japanese Dramas
So I started watching some Japanese detective dramas in my free time the weekends. These include: Answer, Toshi Densetsu no Onna, Kagi-no-kakatta-Heya, Ataru and even though it a lawyer show Legal High is my favorite. Komikado Kensuke played by (Sakai Masato) is a hilarious over the top lawyer who has never lost any case and he is so overindulgent in spending and making money but he is a great lawyer I laugh every episode because he can be so childish.

Honorable Mention # 4 Summer Dramas
Man its happening again. Why are you doing this to me Kdrama Land? Last year a slew of summer dramas all came out at the exact time how am I going to handle. All I know is Bridal Mask is at the top its like a pre City Hunter. He won’t have all the gadgets though so I can’t wait to see how resourceful he’s going to be. Next Ghost because of Daniel Choi so I have to check it out. Then I love Lee Jung Woo because of We Got Married ( I miss campus couple) so I will be watching I Do, I Do. Oh no then there’s I Need Romance 2, Big, Faith, Time Slip Doctor Jin, Arang. Dang the list is getting to long. What’s a K drama girl suppose to do. What if theres some cute TW Drama or interesting J drama coming out.
I will have to make an excel sheet and then proceed.

Honorable/Dishonorable Mention # 3 Fashion King. A.K.A Crazy, Stupid, Love
The men in the show are crazy. The women are stupid. And all for the sake of what they think is Love.
I say this because I was really hoping for something great for this show. I am a fan Yoo Ah In and I really try to find the best in every drama. But this show actually makes me angry, angrier then Dream High 2, more confused then I am legend, Why, because it has a great cast just maddening characters. There has not even been a true character development. I guess I thought the show would be like a serious baby faced beauty. Like having challenges to do and having them be underdogs at the company and becoming Fashion King and Queen. Everyone is so young so that means there should be some youthful energy but there none.
So despite my being upset with the show I decided to think of this show as a comedy because then its really a great show. I decided to laugh at everything, poor secretary all ways getting beat up, Jung Jae Hyuk temper tantrums, Young Gul “don’t leave me but then I will be mean and distant to you and want to give the world“. Ga Young’s back and fourths. I think she should take the money she made from her job and go to school and get away from both guys. All joking aside I still have been drawn into the world even as flip floppy as it is.

Honorable Mention # 2 King2Hearts and Rooftop Prince
Stress. I could not take it this week. With K2H I wanted ep 18 to finish so fast. I have not felt this stressed out about a show since watching the last 2 ep. of Samurai Champloo and City Hunter. Come to think of it there is a few similarities between Kim Young Joo from City Hunter and Eun Shi Kyung their ideals, their fathers and them breaking their trust and the good bye talk they had to the woman they love just before they go after the baddies. I just hope it does not end the same way. That’s why I’m so scared right now. I read the recap ahead while I was watching 18 ep. because I was so scared. My internet was so slow so I felt like I was being tortured, And Rooftop Prince really surprised me because things got so intense and went in a direction I did not think it would go. Can’t believe it almost over for both shows

Honorable Mention #1 Queen In Hyun’s Man
One word for this show in my opinion Romantic. I think I said it before but I love when an actor who may not be as big lands a role and they knock it out of the park. Ji Hyun Woo as Kim Boong Do, and Yoo In Na as Choi Hee Jin have such a natural chemistry. And finally a guy who does not bicker with the girl. He is so charming especially when he looks at her when she thinks he making fun of her and he tells her he’s not, he always reassures her. And Yoo In Na is cute here because she completely falls for him so quickly. Can’t wait for 9 and 10 to be subbed.

    • 28.1 Beng-Beng

totally agree about QIHY being a romantic drama. I like the fact that Boong Do will just start at Hee Jin intently and trying to figure her out. So sweet! I was also surprise with their chemistry. Love, love, love this Kdrama.

      • 28.1.1 Licia

Romantic and yet so suspenseful cause you know he is in danger every time he goes back. But it makes Hee Jin such a safe haven for him. Its make there connection so much more meaningful.

    • 28.2 John

      Licia~

The birds are probably “drunk” if they’re eating fruit. It ferments and hic!

My parents house had Pyracantha bushes ( lots of red berries) and the birds would bonk into the windows affter “having a few”.

      • 28.2.1 Licia

That’s what I thought. Maybe this type of bird has a really low tolerance. It could never be a Kdrama bird.LOL

        • 28.2.1.1 wintergirl

Birds also do this in spring, even when not drunk on berries. Their hormones are humming and they fall in love with or more likely see an adversary in their own reflection in their window. Once had a mallard duck do this. Also had an oriole do this.

    • 28.3 Matilda

Started watching Ataru and Kagi no kakatta heya too but been distracted by k2h and rooftop prince i haven’t been following much. This season is really full of detective/mystery dramas. Will choose to start on legal high soon, since it’s just sitting in my computer tempting me

    • 28.4 afjfa

I think why a lot of girls love the character Boong do is because he’s not the guy we see now in society. I think Boong do is behaving like how men used to do in historical times and that makes me swooooon. He’s a real gentlemen.

      • 28.4.1 Saa

A gentleman, and a brainy gentleman (with sword/scroll skills) at that~<3

QIHM must be the most romantic drama I've seen all year~ (Rewatching The Princess's Man doesn't count because it was released last year, LOL.)

    • 28.5 rainerust

      Okay I SO LOVE QIHM.

I’m not even watching any of the other dramas right now (really, that pesky time / work issue) and so I’m really glad that QIHM is sooooo well written, directed and acted!! Love both leads, both character-wise and real-person-actor-wise haha.

I’ve always had an odd soft spot for JHW and went through 5 episodes of Birth of the Rich for him (but then stopped because no matter how charming he was, his female lead was NOT. I am so bitter about that drama).

[Be warned: MAJOR MAJOR SPOILER ahead]

      …okay, you’ve been warned.

I was so upset in Episodes 9 and 10 when they had to be apart. I could literally feel my heart breaking into itty bitty pieces along with the frustration and longing they must felt as they struggled to deal with a) KBD’s amnesia and loss of the talisman b) CHJ’s two separate stream of memories and her inability to put KDB down to JUST a dream (thank goodness!!)

And I was SO overjoyed when she finally saw him!!!

      [END SPOILER]

Can’t wait for next week! Where’s my time-warping hole when I need one??

    • 28.6 gazelle

I love your parallel of K2H and City Hunter. I am dying for GF and DB to do a thing vs. thing between these two series or between a character from each series (e.g. Nana vs HG, City hunter vs. JH , Prosecutor vs. SK, Vet vs. Princess. ) The two series are very different but they have some similarities (beyond great story/acting and execution) and I can’t help compare them to each other.

  29. 29 kewbie

This is a hit-and-run kind of post, but Holla, ‘Beans!

I was just listening to Taeyeon’s “Missing You Like Crazy” from the K2H OST and I was almost on the verge of tears when I realized, hey, I forgot about OT Friday! Haha…

Anyway, I hope you all are doing well, and I’ll probably be back later. Happy Friday!

  30. 30 aoiaheen

    Hello everyone.

I’m wondering if watching kdrama has warped my thinking a little.

I was watching love rain and Sun Joon struck me as horribly selfish (when he decides to be with hana at the cost of his fathers marriage). It was only after I thought about his situation that I realized he is very normal.

I’m so used to watching noble idiots that selfless behaviour has become the norm.

I mean, what is wrong in going after what you want?

Anyway, in other news, I’m taking my daughter swimming for the first time in her life. She’s so excited she actually woke up at 7 in the morning.

    Have a good weekend everyone.

    • 30.1 John

      aoiaheen~

Re Love Rain & Sun Joon ..

We he asked Ha Na to “run away” with him, I was yelling, “Say Yes ! ”

Just take the girl and run…

Im Yoona is sooo cute.. and tiny !

      • 30.1.1 aoiaheen

I know! He seemed so earnest. And Yoona is doing very well. I was quite pleasantly surprised, especially after hearing a lot of negetive comments about her acting.

I think the PD really knows how to wring the emotion out of the actors.

        • 30.1.1.1 kewbie

I think Yoona is doing pretty decently. She can cry when it’s time to cry and everything. Her newness in acting kinda helps with the “newness” of her character to her relationship. It’s like Joon said, everything she does with him is a “first”.

    • 30.2 kewbie

Yeah seriously, Seo Joon was miserable without Ha Na, and that’s a big deal for someone who started out as a playboy-type. I really wanted them to run away together and elope or live in America or whatever! I was relieved at the end of episode 16, but of course new problems arise! I appreciate that Joon’s dad In Ha doesn’t want to give up on him and make him suffer in love as he once did a long time ago.

      • 30.2.1 John

        kewbie~

Joon loves the girl but I hate it when he’s mean to her.

I find Kim Jeon Sul ( Chang Mo’s nephew) funny. Perhaps he’ll take care of the annoying Min Ho. Poor Sun Ho! He’s a good guy that would probably be a good fit for Ha Na.

Ha Na’s sunbae isn’t creepy creepy, but he needs to go away.

        • 30.2.1.1 kewbie

Joon doesn’t know how to deal with his feelings that’s why he ends up being mean to Ha Na, which totally sucks.

I totally want Jeon Sul and Mi Ho to get together! He can give her the attention she wants (even though, right now, she wants it from Joon).

Yeah, I have always said that if by chance Ha Na got together with Sun Ho, it wouldn’t be a total loss, but it’s like the waiter guy said, he tends to fall for sad girls / girls in trouble, like Ha Na.

As far as sunbae Taesung, well, he’s not too bad, but he needs to take his focus off Ha Na. He’s a chaebol-type — he shouldn’t have any problems finding a new girl.

  31. 31 MojoJojo

    Hello all,

With all the raving i’ve been hearing about Queen In Hyun’s Man it’s going up next on my “too watch” list. It was going Rooftop Prince only, since the last ep is next week, right? But now it looks like I’m gonna be watching both at the same time. Oooh i’m excited.

Currently though, nothing Noooothing can unseat K2H for drama of the year for me. I can’t even remember which drama’s i’ve seen up to now, it’s that bad. I’m all wrapped up and invested. My happiness is contingent on their happiness, whoa, I sound mental. oh wells. lol.

Episode 18 there are no words. I think i’m gonna go watch it again…

Oh and in completely unrelated drama news has anyone seen the SPEC movie? Ive seen the special and I really want to see the movie.

I have ants. I don’t know where they’re coming from but they are driving me insane. I have tried vinegar, lemon juice, salt. I’m trying to get them to go away on their own without having to kill them but they are truly testing my patience. It’s about to go down and I will be the last one standing. Any suggestions cause if I see one more ant stroll past me like they’re paying me half of the rent, i’m gonna explode.

    Enjoy your weekends :)

    • 31.1 skelly

I have found that a sprinkling of cayenne pepper along the baseboards will at least discourage ants; also if you wash the area where they have laid a “trail” with a heavily perfumed soap they will get confused.

That being said, they drive me nuts too and if pleasant means don’t dissuade them I do break out the ant bait.

  32. 32 Threeangels

Kim boong do lovvve him! QIM best drama ever :)

  33. 33 Bluefyre

    Hi you guys! :D

    So I just saw this:
    http://youtu.be/FOjtx6nIgsA

And suddenly I can’t wait for Dr. Jin!
    0.o
    LOL

    • 33.1 Mystisith

Oh! I never noticed Jaejoong had such a low voice before. Maybe the sageuk speech… And he looks better in action than in the promo pics. Could this drama be a pleasant surprise? Would be nice.

      • 33.1.1 kopytko

Having watched Protect the Boss I believe in JJ. Not so extatic about the rest of the cast though.

  34. 34 Sunny

Happy Friday! It’s been a while since I dropped by ^^
I marathoned Queen In Hyun’s Man recently and I absolutely love it. The leads are so adorable! Can’t wait until episodes 9-10 are subbed.

I’m on episode 6 of 12 Men in a Year and I don’t like it as much as I thought I would. I don’t know, the acting is not very good and the plot it just okay, I kinda see where the story is going. But I’ll finish watching it anyway since it’s not that long. I’ve also watched the first two episodes of Marriage Plot and it’s alright. The recaps have me fearing it will jump the shark though.

I’m just so charmed by Queen In Hyun’s Man, I went on tumblr yesterday to reblog all the gifs haha!

  35. 35 biene1709

Kim Boon Do is my ultimate K-Drama Hero. He has raised the bar so high, I don’t know who will ever surpass him! Oh god, I’m so obsessed with this drama, haha :D

  36. 36 diorama

Is anyone NOT liking K2H that much anymore? I mean, it’s got plenty of adrenaline, but beneath that the characters and plot are pretty kdrama standard dressed in fancy uniform. And I really wish they gave Ha Ji Won a character arc beyond being trusting/untrusting of her love interest, because she’s basically the same as in episode 1. I don’t know…somehow the high stakes games the characters are playing makes it fun to watch, but I don’t think there’s substance under that. I do love LSG’s performance though <3

    • 36.1 Mystisith

I can’t decide myself steadily about K2H. Very strange. LSG’s character has a lot of screen time compared to HJW if you pay attention. It’s really more about the king than the Queen.

      • 36.1.1 Saima

Initially I thought the original title of “The King” would’ve worked superbly but now think that “The King 2 Hearts” works just as fine. The drama is really about The King’s love for his country and his woman and how will he reconcile these two loves when facing an inimitable adversary!!

    • 36.2 Saa

      Me. Yep.

HJW is awesome and all, but I agree that she’s been a pretty static character. I wanna see her falter more. Right now, she’s like mainly supporting LSG’s character development. What about HER character development? D; And I don’t mean romantically. =/

      • 36.2.1 gazelle

I don’t know, I thought she got more gusty as the series went along. She refers to south korea as “our side” now :)

  37. 37 Ivoire

    Hi everyone, Happy friday!!!
I am caught up on Rooftop, and have yet to watch the King’s last two episodes. I am trying to stay away from spoilers and recaps :-) in the meantime.

    • 37.1 Mystisith

Hello Ivoire! Nice to have you with us. :)

      • 37.1.1 Ivoire

        Back at you Mysti,
I hope the recap for CLBM goes well, and that you will have fun with your guests on your blog. I have started reading recaps of QIHM and watched an episode here and there because of what people have been saying on the OT. I will have to make time to watch it from the beginning and in a chronological order. I love the OST, at least the songs I have listened to so far.

        • 37.1.1.1 Mystisith

Thanks! Recap is going EXTREMELY well. :) :)
QIHM is one of the best dramas i have ever seen: In my top five! Be sure to watch it in good conditions, the show deserves it.

          • 37.1.1.1.1 Ivoire

Thanks for the recommendation of QIHM. I will definitely watch the whole drama at some point. So I know that QIHM and Secret Garden are in your top five favorite dramas. Which ones would you say are the other three so far? (just wondering).
What did you mean by making sure that I watch the show “in good conditions?” Where should I watch it (in your opinion) to watch it in “good conditions?”

          • 37.1.1.1.2 Mystisith

Lol. Ivoire, when i say good conditions i mean big screen, HD and without disturbances. For me at least, i love to feel the flow of that particular show: It’s like an alternate universe, a little bubble.
The other shows i rank in high places (no special order) would be the japanese saga Hana Yori Dango, the taiwanese drama Mars, and City Hall. Truth is, i have seen a lot of very good dramas. The bad ones are not so numerous (one 1000 kisses by decade is enough)… I tend to remember only the good things, but i’m sure you noticed i’d rather have a happy ending. Frankly speaking, when i see all the good dramas we had in just 5 months this year i’m amazed. This is really impressive.

  38. 38 Alex

Can you two continue Queen In-Hyun’s Man recaps? I love that show!

  39. 39 Hannah25

I’ve not really been watching much k-drama lately other than Queen Insoo which I am loving. It’s more of a traditional sageuk but the acting, pacing and plotting (and the music) is really good – such a pity that this is not being subbed.

Been watching Game of Thrones (poor Sansa!), Revenge and Once Upon a Time (good finale but could have done with about 10/15minutes to flesh out certain aspects).

    • 39.1 aoiaheen

How is game of thrones? I bought the book last week, but got bored after the first few pages. Should I bother continuing?

      • 39.1.1 Hannah25

Well I would say – yes. Depends how far you went into it – if I were you I would read up to the chapter ending in the tower (without spoiling anything!). I find the series of books to be quite different to the usual fantasy kind and love how he can take a standard fantasy “thing” and turn it upside down.

However, it is not everyone’s cup of tea. You might prefer to watch the first few episodes or the whole season 1 to see if you like it and if you do, then continue reading.

        • 39.1.1.1 aoiaheen

Thanks ! I’ll try it again, if i get bored I’ll probably watch the series. It seemed interesting and I’ve always liked stories with knights and swordplay.

  40. 40 Laya

    Happy weekend, OT denizens! :D

Nothing much happened except I got my first rejection letter. :D And got a friend hooked on Dream High– she is now blaming me because she’s torn between Jin-gook and Sam-dong. My answer: You haven’t watched Sungkyunkwan Scandal yet! =)) Hngggh, must finish fic.

Finally got paid for a freelance job and bought new earphones, so now I can watch dramas without waking the whole household (especially my sister’s baby). :D

Oh, and K-drama tropes seem to be invading the local dramas. They kind of stand out if you’ve been watching local dramas for years and then became a Dramabeans disciple. :D Now we have piggyback rides and throw-up scenes (where the girl throws up on the guy at the most inopportune moment). I’m just waiting for someone to do an OPW so that my suspicions will be confirmed!

    • 40.1 Ivoire

      Hi Laya,
So if I may ask, where are you from or where do you live? I am wondering where those local dramas are? It is interesting how Kdramas are influencing other pop cultures.

      • 40.1.1 Laya

I live in the Philippines, Ivoire. Local channels also air K-dramas, one or two timeslots a day… we just finished City Hunter, now Dream High is airing on the channel my family’s loyal to (network wars FTW). I’m beginning to think the local writers are studying the K-dramas. :D

        • 40.1.1.1 Ivoire

          Laya,

I had a hunch you lived in the Philippines because I know that Kdramas are shown there (I worked with a nurse from the Philippines who told me that Kdramas are popular there) and I remember seeing clips of the Philippino version of MY Name is Kim Sam Soon online. I just didn’t want to assume, so I thought I would ask. The drama “Princess and I” sounds like an interesting drama. I would watch it as well if I knew where, online.
I am from Cameroon, in Central Africa, but I currently live in Northern California. We do meet/come across interesting people globally on these blogs, don’t we? I like that.
What is the time difference between where you live and the Dramabeans time? (just curious :-) ) How long has the Philippines been broadcasting Kdramas?

From Cameroon to Northern California… O_O wow, that’s a long way to travel! Nice to meet you, Ivoire!

I’m not sure what Dramabeans time is, but the Philippines is GMT+8. So it’s currently 6:38 am Saturday here. I’m not sure when local TV first started airing K-dramas, but I’d peg it at around the time Autumn in My Heart first aired here as Endless Love in 2003. I guess it appealed to a lot of people because of the melodrama. After the melodramas began to pall, along came the sageuks, then the rom-coms.

MNIKSS is not the only K-drama that was remade here– so were My Girl, Autumn in My Heart, and Stairway to Heaven.

I think it’s a universal phenomenon. I was watching a new daily drama in Poland and I had to laugh about the chaebol-like storyline and all the makjang elements I had never expected (or noticed) before. I was thinking whether somebody was inspired or the writers explore the human fate in the whole world in the same way.

      • 40.2.1 Laya

LOL yes, our local dramas do have chaebol-like storylines and makjang elements, especially noble idiocy o_#. It’s just that I haven’t seen a piggyback ride in a local drama before (because they always do that romantic thing where the guy lifts the girl with one arm under the knees and one arm around the back). And the girl is always a sweet girl who needs protecting and rescuing, who doesn’t do anything to harm her reputation (hello, Catholic influence), but now we’ve got a drama heroine who makes a deal to go to a party with a rich guy in exchange for money (because her dad needs to be bailed out of jail), and then of course she ends up humiliated because he just brought her there to forestall his grandfather from fixing him up with the daughter of a company investor. She gets mad at him of course and tells him to stay away from her, but now the guy keeps following her around because she’s the only one in the school who doesn’t fall for him (hi, Jan Di, is that you). Oh, and the mean girls pick on her for that reason, and he keeps stepping in to rescue her– and she gets so mad at him that when she finds out he hates frogs, she throws one at him and lands him in trouble, and the college dean ends up giving them both a punishment (oh hi, Shin and Kyu Won, is that you). Did I mention that on their second meeting he threw her into a fountain because she was wearing a hot dog costume that caught on fire due to a careless smoker? Oh, and instead of this loveline where the two know each other practically from birth and are separated by scheming people, there are three guys in this story–her best friend, the prince she met on a vacation (who piggybacked her), and the annoying guy in her school (who took her to the party) and no one quite knows yet which one the girl ends up with. The drama is called Princess and I. I love it so far. :D

geez, I’d watch that. I wonder if Viki will have it.

          • 40.2.1.1.1 Laya

I hope Viki gets it! I watch unsubbed epis I miss on either epdrama.com or pinoypride.net, but I can’t find any subbed epis posted yet. :( I’m trying to recap it, but I’ve just done the first two weeks (and have a notepad full of material for future recaps).

    Happy OT everyone!

Are there souls still wondering around eating bon bon covered evil cookies?

I just finished watching Glowing She/My Shinning Girl. It was horrible. I liked the fact that the lame ballerina got some spunk in this show but they blew it out of proportion and made her obnoxious most of the time as well as incredibly naive. The back and forth was endless. I wonder if she just became KM’s autobiographer would the romance have made more sense? Thank god for QIHM and K2H.

    • 41.1 ahjummabunny

I like so e hyun! that’s her trade mark personality. you will enjoy it in hyena. I though she was very charming there.

      • 41.1.1 becca_boo

I’ve never really been impressed by So Yi-hyun before, but I recently saw the first episode of Hyena (I’ll get back to it when I have a little more time), and good grief she was adorable. I think she’s one of those actresses who needs just the right role to be good. She’s so much better at bubbly and determined than tragic and aloof (like in You’ve Fallen for Me – such a weird character), don’t you think?

        Happy OT Friday!

  42. 42 mellowyel

Happy Weekend everyone! Just popping in to say hi as I have to move out of my temporary housing today. Packing and cleaning – ugh. Spazzing over QIHM still. I keep waiting for the drama to take a wrong turn, but it hasn’t yet. So pleased! I feel like I’m watching each episode 3 times – first without subs, then reading recaps here and on Dramatalk. Then when it’s done, I plan on watching it all over again!!! Once I find some reliable subtitles that is – crossing my fingers that Dramafever will pick it up.

  43. 43 KMW

I decided to stop being a lurker and post. I won’t have internet in 2 weeks because i’m moving and don’t have an idea when i will get it back. Funny because i just got it 2 months ago… So far since the last time i’ve had internet i’ve watched a dozen dramas ranging from Chuno to Greatest Love to Fight. I had at least 2 dozen more dramas to watch and was super excited for some new ones: bridal mask, arang and the magistrate, big, Fullhouse 2. At least i’ll have netflix dvds. And the last drama i’m choosing to watch: Slingshot-Story of a man.

    • 43.1 Shukmeister

Welcome, KMW! Sorry you’re going to lose your I-net connection. I think I’d quietly go catatonic if that happens, lol.

Bridal Mask is one that’s caught my interest. I’ll check people’s reactions to the others before I’ll consider it.

I watch a mix of K-, J-, and TW-dramas, with an occasional Thai one if I’m missing a lot of face slapping and screaming women.

Does Netflix have a lot of foreign drama? I’m trying to decide to either get Netflix or Hulu Plus.

      • 43.1.1 KMW

Hulu has alot more variety. You wouldn’t even need hulu plus just regular old free hulu. So between Netflix and hulu, i’d definetely recommend hulu. just be ready for a ton of commercials, even from hulu plus.
i’ve watched some j-drama. Can’t say i’ve watched Thai or Taiwanese dramas though. I mostly watch foreign films, mainly because i find hollywood and even independent American films lacking…something. the last one i saw in the theatre was The Hangover because it was my mom’s b-day present-
I almost feel silly for wanting to watch Full House 2 but i can’t: Park Ki-Woong.

        • 43.1.1.1 Shukmeister

Thanks! I’ve actually watched abut 80% of what free Hulu has for both anime and KDrama; I thought there would be more variety with Hulu Plus.

I know PKW was going to be the bad guy in Bridal Mask; I’m leery of FH2 only because remakes rarely work for me. (notable exception, all the incarnations of Hana Yori Dango). But things can change dramatically!

          • 43.1.1.1.1 JoAnne

For me the big difference between Hulu and Hulu Plus is that I can watch HPlus on my tv.

Hey im from Puerto Rico found out the hard way how my android enable my drama addiction. Whenever i have free time at work im either reading recaps here or wacthing dramas on my numerous app. Yes its true while many have anbry birds app i have dramafever while others battle in the many game apps ihave crunchyroll and netflix and hul. Im not evsn using my phone to call people so sad when you get so many apps that feed your addiction.

So i got into kdramas when my son had to be hospitalize and enduring the hospital for a week and half was toture. But it made me a fan of kdramas cause the only channel that worked well was a local channel that dub ths dramas.drMas dub sojnd funny as heck. So got into the spanish dub kdrama and from then on is been feeding the addiction.

How to know if a drama is good i call it the sleep depravation rating if i dont sleep just to see what happens next good drama.

Queen In-hyun’s Man, I love you.

Awesome episodes this week. Drove me crazy like Hee-jin. Hopefully the recaps would come soon since Rooftop’s ending this week. I won’t be able to watch raw episodes anymore since I’m moving to another city for a new job and so it’ll be busy for the first few months. Just thankful that the new office would have an internet connection where this site is not blocked so I could check out the recaps of the dramas ending next week esp. TK2H.

P.S.: I was wondering where I’ve seen Hee-jin’s friend-manager, Soo-kyung, before so I googled her. Surprised that she was Kim Seung-yoo’s sister-in-law in The Princess’ Man! She’s really good with both roles at TPM and QIM.

    • 45.1 needlight

I love QIM too!!! so so much.. Now that you mentioned it, Soo-kyung IS the sister-in-law in TPM!! She is a great actress because she does her roles so well that you don’t even realize it’s the same person.

      • 45.1.1 Saa

        Oh wow, I would’ve never thought… o______O!!;;
        That’s one amazing actress…

    Hi friday goers,

Never expect to stumble upon this !

  47. 47 needlight

Hi OT-ers! I’m not sure if I’ve posted on OT before (maybe only on drama recaps) but here I am! I’m currently watching QIM, RTP, and LR and liking all of them (in that order).
For those of you who download the dramas to watch, where do you find them (in HD quality preferably)? I think i’ve become more picky with my kdrama watching experience lately, especially knowing that I can watch Hee Jin and Boong Do in HD (like the trailers that CJENMDRAMA uploads on youtube).
Thanks in advance for any help in this area!
    Happy weekend! :)

    • 47.1 Shukmeister

You can find various quality torrents at d-addicts and various d/l platforms at doramax264. Also, some folks have links as part of their blog, and some streaming sites allow RealPlayer d/l’ing.

I still recommend purchasing the DVD whenever possible to support and encourage more good drama! Yesasia and Amazon are good places.

      • 47.1.1 needlight

Thanks so much for the info! will check it out. :)
i’d love to buy the DVDs, but I’m not sure if TVN cable dramas will come out in DVDs?

  48. 48 Rossi

Joining Open Thread for the first time b/c I’m in love and love makes you do things you never done before like joining DB’s Open Thread to pimp out this petition for QIHM’s DVD. Please Santa, can you make this happen for me? I’ve been a rather decent girl this year and I will be an awesome one if you let me have this. PLEASEE!

“ANYONE INTERESTED IN THE DVD OF THE DRAMA?!?!?
There has been rumors for a release of an OST and DVD… flying for a while already.
Well, CJ E&M confirmed the rumours might actually come true. So basically, if you want it too, i need your help.

CJ E&M(Production team) posted a status regarding the DVD.
As this is a cable drama, the chance of a DVD production is still low.

[Queen Inhyun's Man] Hi everyone!~ Our production team is currently discussing about whether we are going to release a DVD for the drama. Do you guys want the DVD? People who wants the DVD, what kind of things do you think we should include in the DVD?
Whatever the case, i will keep you updated regarding the discussion of the DVD.
The more the people who wants the DVD, the higher the chance of getting it produced!

https://www.facebook.com/CJnDrama Go here, like it… and please comment and like the last status they posted that looks like what i posted in korean above.

Even if you don’t know korean, please comment… like please include the BTS… or commentary, interviews and whatever by the cast!
Just comment about your love for it in english… it’s fine!
Just prove the popularity of the drama!”

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS!

I hope DB makes an official post for this so that more people will see it.

    hi everybody! happy OT!

im kinda frustrated with RTP right now. i feel like i wasted so much time downloading 16 episodes. tho it already start to loose steam earlier on, i keep going. but this week, it just go downhill, nearly going into the sea. i was thinking of dropping it this week and stopping the d/loading, but i’ve already d/loaded 16 eps! and there’s people who’s counting on me to d/load it for them. but i would rather use my bandwidth to d/l QIHM. this is why i should stop d/loading drama as they air. i probably should wait till they finish airing or i’ll end up wasting my precious bandwidth when the drama go down down down hill…… =(

I totally love that you posted Andrew Bird! Love him and seeing his show in August.
