The King 2 Hearts: Episode 15

Just when you think the king is Gilligan, he turns out to be MacGyver. Yeesh, the things you gotta do to get engaged in this world. Remind me never to double down on war games to be with the one I love. Huh? Whadduya mean that’s crazy? IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE.

EPISODE 15 RECAP

We backtrack a bit to our team after finding out that key-bearer Young-bae has been taken hostage. Jae-ha calls his general for options – if they can’t get off this island on that raft, what are the other ways to win the game?

The general names the options, all unlikely: full surrender by the opposing team, they “kill” every member on the other team, or get the rest of the U.S. team to switch sides on their leader in a coup de tat. Jae-ha says no, none of those.

The final one: destroy the other team’s equipment, cutting them off from supplies and all communication, leaving them incapacitated. That’s the one. Jae-ha hangs up and his team worries – real explosives? Hang-ah says they can’t, scared that people might get hurt, but Jae-ha says that’s why they have to make sure that no one does.

The plan is to set off a few bombs and then get the Americans to surrender. If they don’t? Then they blow every last bit of the U.S. bunker. They ask how they’re even going to make explosives anyway, and Jae-ha takes out his phone. All he needs is two of these.

Then we catch up to the end of the last episode, as Jae-ha sneaks onto the Americans’ base, and gets to work. In voiceover this time we hear his explanation to his team, that the upside of military service being compulsory is that you get all sorts – guys who make cell phones, video games.

And what did princey do in his spare time in the army? Why make bombs out of everyday things, of course. “Because I was bored.” Hahaha. I love that the explanation isn’t that he’s some genius, but that he spent his army days goofing off and doing things he wasn’t supposed to.

He sets up the first explosive and waits. Kang-seok draws two guys away, successfully killing one on a land mine. Dong-ha waits, and the guard watching Young-bae finally asks if that lighter he picked up is his. Young-bae takes a look, and sees “Yeom Dong-ha” carved into the side of the lighter.

He beams and calls out Dong-ha’s name, which is his cue to toss a smoke grenade into the room. Young-bae overtakes his guard.

Hang-ah gets into a firefight, and Not-Shi-kyung ends up dead, but she takes out one on the other team.

By nightfall, the Americans are down to three active men, and one taken hostage (Young-bae’s guard). Jae-ha sets up another explosive, but the clock is winding down on the whole game, and Dong-ha asks if they shouldn’t just ambush the other team.

Hang-ah says they can’t, ’cause that leaves Jae-ha alone to finish the job, clearly meaning, he couldn’t possibly, the wee tyke. Jae-ha just turns to her mid-bomb assembly, with the most hilarious silent you-did-not-just-patronize-me-like-that look on his face.

He radios Kang-seok to see if he’s holding up his end. Kang-seok is too busy making a run for it to answer, as he climbs a barbed wire fence to get away from the one American left on his tail.

But just as he reaches the top of the fence, he takes a bullet and his kill-meter beeps. He collapses to the ground in a heap, as the U.S. soldier takes out his first-aid kit (aw), and Kang-seok mutters with a laugh that it’ll take three hours for him to get back to the rest of his team. Ha. What an elaborate diversion.

They wait, but the two last holdouts on the American team refuse to budge from the bunker. Jae-ha tells Hang-ah to draw them out. She worries that there isn’t enough time, but he says with confidence, “We still have twenty minutes. We can do it.” Aw, you learned that from her.

Hang-ah calls the U.S. team leader (she speaks in Korean and he answers in English, but at least they have interpreters in earpieces, since it’s a game) and calls him out, as she walks the hostage toward them.

The leader leaves the boat keys with the last team member inside, and goes out to face Hang-ah without weapons, to negotiate. She asks why he’s here alone, nervous since this puts a big kink in her safety distraction plan, but Jae-ha gives them the go-ahead anyway.

Hang-ah panics, but keeps up negotiations, while Jae-ha sneaks up behind the bunker, calls to ignite the bomb, and gets the drop on the guy inside. He tells the guy to get away from the wall behind him, but he doesn’t listen, of course. Oh crap.

The bomb goes off, and the guy gets knocked down by the blast. Oh noes. Please don’t die. Please don’t die. Jae-ha runs over to make sure he’s okay, and breathes a sigh of relief. Phew.

But the explosion must’ve knocked out his radio, because it goes dead and he chucks it aside. Jae-ha snatches the boat keys and then immediately gets to work in rigging the last charge. He cuts the gas line on this one. Eep. Is that a good idea?

The U.S. team leader calls foul (they’re not allowed to bring real explosives) but Hang-ah points out the rule that they’re allowed to make use of whatever they find. He says it’s just a game, but it’s no game to her:

“It’s critical for us. The people we love are on the line. Have you ever been separated from your family? People with the same language, the same history, who lived together for thousands of years… in one moment, halved… have you ever been split like that? Losing parents, siblings, destroyed by a three-year war… have you ever had that happen to you? I don’t know if something like this is just a game to you, but it has always been critical for us.”

She tells him that their communications are out. She points out their armory, and presses a button on her phone. It blows. She says their headquarters are the last to go, and tells them to surrender. But they aren’t backing down.

She checks her watch nervously. Minutes till deadline. But there’s no answer from Jae-ha, and she doesn’t know if he’s had enough time to set the last charge.

Inside, Jae-ha works as fast as he can, sweat dripping, hands shaking so hard it turns me into a nervous wreck just to watch. Stop shaking while building explody things!

Hang-ah weighs her options. Another minute goes by.

Flashback to their initial conversation where she voiced her fears that the plan would be too risky. He tells her they can do it, and caresses her face, hugging her for reassurance.

He tells her that no matter what, they can’t go past eight o’clock, so even if the other team doesn’t surrender, she has to blow the charge before their time is up.

Back to Jae-ha wiring with trembling hands. Ohgodohgod, who knew bomb-building could be just as nerve-wracking as bomb-disabling? He barely finishes, and then struggles to drag the American out in time…

She looks down at her phone, and then gets ready to make the call. The U.S. team leader apparently has thrown all reason aside, because he declares that he doesn’t care whether his teammate LIVES OR DIES (uh… just going to assume you’re psyching her out, ’cause that’s just ridiculous) but warns her that Jae-ha will die too.

She hesitates. Back to flashback, where Jae-ha says to her, “I’m going to win. And I’m going to return and be engaged to you. If you feel the same way, then you press that button before eight o’clock. Trust me. And I’ll trust you.” A nice reversal of the last war games they played, where they did neither.

Holding her face, he asks her to promise—that if she loves him, she’ll push the button. Back to the present. Hang-ah puts her finger over the phone, with seconds left to spare. A tear rolls down her cheek, as she says, “I love Comrade Lee Jae-ha…” and she presses the button.

The call goes through, and the whole bunker goes up in a massive explosion. She screams for Jae-ha and goes running, and Dong-ha follows after her. He stops her from running right into the fire, and she screams and cries for Jae-ha, thinking the worst.

She wails, and then from the edge of the woods behind them, Jae-ha’s voice rings out, “You’re so loud!” Startled, they run over to the other side, and find him heaving on the ground, the American solider still unconscious, lying next to him.

Her tears turn from fear to ones of relief, and he gets up and smiles, joking, “Why are you crying? Did someone die?” She just keeps crying. He staggers to stand up, and then she finally walks toward him, collapsing into his chest with sobs.

He just hugs her tight as she cries and cries, and he laughs, “You can’t trust me, even till the end, can you?” I just love that she’s crying and he’s laughing. He holds her close, and from the distance, he and Dong-ha exchange smiles.

At the palace, Secretary Eun reports to Mom and Jae-shin that the WOC is currently weighing final verdict. Mom asks about the latest incident with Club M, and he says it’s taken care of. Jae-shin takes issue with his idea of problem solving, since it involves groveling to the enemy. You and me both, sister.

Mom tells her to apologize to Secretary Eun (as an elder), and she does, knowing that he did what was necessary. Well, necessary for the good of whom is questionable, but whatever. He adds that it was a good experience for his son as well.

She looks up, startled, “Eun Shi-kyung went there and apologized too?”

Shi-kyung goes for a run as the day’s events go swirling around in his head. Mia’s threats, her crimes, the fact that she enjoys watching Jae-shin suffer in terror… it sends him to the ground as he trips on a traffic cone.

He goes to put it back, and it suddenly opens the floodgates. He kicks and screams, boiling over with anger. He falls to his knees, fists balled up, as angry tears come pouring out.

And from the distance, Jae-shin sees it all, having come out to look for him. Oof, that breaks my heart even more. He lets one last tear fall, and she cries a tear to match his.

He gathers himself and goes back to being the pillar of strength, which I think breaks my heart most of all.

She calls him to the greenhouse later, and he comes in uniform. She asks if the man he met earlier today was the one who killed her brother, and agrees to return to therapy to regain her memories. But this time Shi-kyung tells her that she doesn’t have to.

Oh noes! Did it kill his spirit? Is he broken?

She looks up, surprised, “Have you given up on me?” He stammers no, but he’s clearly seeing things differently now. I’m terrified that this is the end to Shi-kyung’s innocence, but then Jae-shin switches gears: “I like you.” Er?

“The world’s most frustrating and un-fun, one leader of the royal guard… I like him.” He just gapes, mouth literally hanging open. She starts to get flustered and asks him to say something, so he tries to move his lips, but no sound comes out.

I seriously think he might cry. Or crap his pants. It’s fifty-fifty right now. He’s so nervous that he can barely speak, and finally manages to stammer that she must be having a really hard time, which can lead to psychological trauma. HA. You mean the only reason she could possibly like you is if she were damaged in the head?

She agrees that she is having a really hard time, which is why she kept wanting him by her side—by throwing tantrums, and picking fights, making jokes. “And then I realized… ah, I like this person. So don’t give up on me. I’ll be courageous like you. I’ll become a woman who befits you.” Awww. She asks him to standby and keep watch.

Meanwhile, it’s Day Three of limbo on Battleship Island, as both teams await the official decision from the WOC. The air is still tense between the two teams, despite the fact that they’ve had to bunk together, which the boys complain about, but Hang-ah points out is a given, since they’re the ones who blew up the other camp. Touché.

She decides to try and make the best of it, and gathers up the meat on their table. The boys panic—Not the meeeeeat!—but it works to break the ice, and they share their rations. The guy who tended to Kang-seok’s wounds tosses ointment at the back of his head, even eliciting a grumbly thank you from the giant.

Cut to Shi-kyung panicking, “The princess went where?” She went to go face the bad guy is where, as she watches Bong-gu’s speech at the peace convention with a glare. Bong-gu declares the monarchy of this country lacking, and the peninsula not yet ready for true peace.

He steps down from the stage, satisfied with himself, and then a special guest is announced: Lee Jae-shin. She comes to the stage and apologizes for her last appearance, making no excuses for herself.

She calls Bong-gu out on his words, for not separating personal feelings from a view of an entire country, and says that yes—they are a war-torn country, always preparing for the worst, every game a war game.

As she speaks, Shi-kyung races to the convention hall and bursts into the room, but finds that she’s poised and confident and speaking with ease. She says that what Bong-gu said is true about peace not dropping in out of the sky—that it has to be made little by little.

And with that she motions to her assistants, who take out a pair of crutches. And with their help, she rises from her chair and stands up. Not on her own – she’s wearing braces, essentially an entire suit from the waist down, but she’s holding herself up, even as her hands tremble.

She says that she can only stand for about ten minutes. “But someday I will stand. Our country is the same.” She says that every little step they’re making is for peace, and just as she needs this walking suit to stand, their country needs the rest of the world to help them achieve that peace.

And then she ends the same way she did with Shi-kyung, asking them to standby and keep watch, as she works hard. She bows. Shi-kyung wells up with emotion. The room applauds with a standing ovation, and Bong-gu fumes.

From the palace, Mom watches with tears in her eyes, “That’s my daughter.” Aw. Secretary Eun smiles.

The WOC panel debates the decision for three days straight, and then finally put it to a vote. Back on the island, the winners’ boat gets started up, and it’s Team Korea onboard. Whooo! Not that we ever thought they’d lose.

Jae-ha looks over at the Americans, waiting on the shore in defeat, and offers them a ride. Once they’re aboard, Hang-ah offers her Korean patch to the U.S. team leader and they trade patches with a handshake. Suddenly it’s like an end-of-summer-camp lovefest, and Kang-seok’s like, that’s enough of that mushy stuff, until he gets offered a trade too. Hee.

As they sail off, we get told that Team Korea bested Russia in Round 2, but lost to Egypt in Round 3, landing in fourth place at the end. They toast with the Americans at the end of the games, and give interviews, faces beaming.

Hang-ah gets asked about her engagement, and she stops mid-sentence, not knowing how to answer. She looks around… and then Jae-ha pops into frame, “Engaged? Of course we’re getting engaged. From now on, this is my fiancée.” Kang-seok pours champagne and the party rages on.

Bong-gu watches the broadcast with a smile on his face, and though his words are mocking, I’m pretty sure a part of him thinks that they’re friends. Seriously. Like the war game teams, except he’s too much of a sociopath to know the difference between that and real life.

He calls Shi-kyung and greets him with, “Hello, this is Rotten Cookies.” Pffft. Shi-kyung coldly asks how he got this number. Bong-gu asks, “What is it that you like about Lee Jae-ha?” Omg, is this a jealous why-don’t-you-love-me call?

“You know, he and I are the same. There’s hardly a difference. So why…” Shi-kyung just hangs up. HA.

He starts to save the number into his phone as “Rotten Cookies,” when Bong-gu calls again. Dude, take a hint. He already has a king he loves. Er, serves.

But he pleads with him to listen, and this time he asks, “Do you trust your father?” Oh NO. “Blind faith is poisonous you know…” Aaaargh, I’m so torn between wanting him to know the truth so he can right the wrongs, and wanting him to be protected from the truth about the father he keeps on that pedestal.

If he did say more, we don’t get to hear it. Next thing we know, Jae-ha gets a call from Secretary Eun, who’s on his way to meet him with Shi-kyung in tow. He says that Bong-gu has requested a meeting, and though Hang-ah protests, Jae-ha agrees to meet him.

Dad asks Shi-kyung why Bong-gu called him, and asks if there was anything else he said. Shi-kyung shrugs it off, though he’s clearly got a lot of new questions where Dad is concerned.

Bong-gu congratulates Jae-ha on the WOC, and then in a surprise move, he says that all this one-upping each other back and forth has run its course. He proposes that they stop now: “Let’s just say I’m sorry and end it.” Jae-ha sneers, “Say? You killed a man, and you want to say it’s like you’re sorry?”

Bong-gu says he lost a lot too, a hundred billion dollars to be exact, and figures that it’s a fair exchange—Jae-kang couldn’t possibly be worth that much, right? He says they’ll call it even then. Brother, hundred billion, they both lost, but it’s samesies.

Cookies, you are so off your rocker, it amazes me.

He says it dawned on him how alike they are, actually acknowledging that Jae-ha is on his level. He says that Jae-ha is the one who said in his present that he shot at his girlfriend too.

Jae-ha: “So you shot that woman too? So you could be like me?” Bong-gu counters that he’s actually a step above, since he used live rounds. Jae-ha nods calmly. “That’s true. You and I are only a hair different… But I know how to feel ashamed. I shouldn’t hurt the people around me. I shouldn’t have shot Hang-ah like that. At least I reflect on my actions. But what are you?”

Bong-gu laughs, taken aback. “Why are you being like this? You’re a philistine just like me.” Jae-ha says sure, but at least he has a conscience. But Bong-gu is nothing except himself.

“You eat when you want to eat, and crap when you when you want to crap. Haven’t you seen something that does the same? Oh it’s dog-pigs. They do that, right? They eat, crap, bite and tear each other apart anywhere. Without knowing shame.” [A dog-pig isn’t a real thing, but what you’d call someone who’s sub-human, a beast.]

Bong-gu asks if he’s really going to keep up the fight, and Jae-ha says he was going to let it go, but he Just. Can’t. Do it. Bong-gu asks, I swear with a touch of eagerness, if Jae-ha’s going to keep attacking the front line, but he says no: “I’m just going to ignore you.”

Hahaha. I love that Jae-ha can always read what Bong-gu wants him to say, and do the opposite. He says he doesn’t want to end up a dog-pig by association and laughs. Bong-gu seethes on the inside and then gets up to congratulate him on his engagement ceremony, and sticks out his hand for a shake. Jae-ha glares, thinking it a threat, and Bong-gu coos that he can rest easy, and turns to go.

But then… he has to scootch out sideways from the space between the chair and the coffee table, an inch at a time. Hahahahaha.

It’s time for the engagement and the guests file in as Dong-ha checks every single person and Shi-kyung does another sweep, warning the team to keep a watchful eye.

Jae-ha’s mom and Hang-ah’s dad sit up on the stage, and Kang-seok and Young-bae arrive in full uniform and sit down in the front row, all stiff and sticking out like sore thumbs. Aw. The whole family is here.

All except Jae-shin who’s hard at work in physical therapy. She’s got a long way to go, but she’s not giving up, and says to herself that she’ll make the wedding, no matter what.

Jae-ha and Hang-ah arrive in a convertible, waving to the crowd, and then Jae-ha waits on the stage.

Bong-gu plays with his tarot cards, tellingly still obsessed with the people who surround Jae-ha, and picks some ominous cards, or at least that’s what the music tells us, because I don’t read tarot.

Hang-ah comes out onto the stage and Jae-ha takes her by the hand.

Suddenly a familiar voice rings out. Omg, is that Jae-kang??

They turn to the giant monitor, and there’s Jae-kang, practicing for this very thing. The MC announces that the late king had recorded his rehearsals and that today he’ll be presiding over the engagement. Aw. Are you gonna make me cry?

Jae-ha gives Secretary Eun a grateful smile, knowing it was his doing. He bows his head with a smile. But just when I’m about to give the old man a point or two for this adorable stunt, he gets a call from Club M and leaves to take it. Urg.

Jae-kang presides over the engagement ceremony, which in Korea can be as elaborate as a second wedding, and given that they’re royals, it’s pretty much like a wedding-lite.

He asks them each to vow to uphold their duties to the country and to its people, and they answer yes. And then he asks them for one last promise, as a couple representing a union between North and South Koreas – will they do everything in their power to rid this country of war, and even in war, promise to stand united? They turn towards each other…

Back to Bong-gu, cackling at the Queen of Swords card. He picks another to turn over: the King of Swords. I’m just going to go out on a limb and say he’s happy ’cause it’s king, queen, and war.

Jae-ha and Hang-ah both give their promises. Jae-kang smiles. Waaaah, it’s like he’s smiling right at them!

They turn to the crowd, hand in hand.

COMMENTS

Damn, the things we had to endure to get the two of you ALMOST married. I hope having to win a war simulation to get engaged doesn’t mean they need to win a real war to get married. Why do I feel like I just jinxed that?

Frankly the main reason I’m glad they finally got engaged is that the last few episodes were sapped of a lot of tension, because once the couple confirmed their love, the WOC was the only thing standing in the way, and it was pretty much a foregone conclusion. So while there were interesting moments for our characters, there wasn’t a lot of forward movement. I’m much happier now that we’ve got that past us, and can go forward with new story points, because this drama is a lot better when we’ve got real world stakes against the monarchy rather than a war game situation.

I get what they’re trying to do with the WOC and what it means to have the couple fighting together successfully in a practice situation, but it’s just not as dramatically riveting as the actual threat and political strife between North and South, no matter how many homemade bombs you make. Sure it’s tense in the moment (and we got a great crying/laughing reunion in the rubble), but plotwise these last three episodes felt very much like treading over necessary but not new or interesting ground.

I’ll put up with a lot for the sake of the plot, but that was definitely the rough patch in the story. It’s possible that the execution left a lot to be desired, but even in the writing, despite some good character beats, overall it doesn’t hold a candle to their training days, Jae-kang’s death, Jae-ha’s kidnapping or crossing the DMZ for love. I know you can’t be epic for twenty episodes straight, but you can’t help but feel the downshift in momentum when it falls short.

Thankfully it’s behind us and I feel the upswing a-comin’ in a major way.

Though what we did get in the meantime I do appreciate: Jae-shin and Shi-kyung have made great strides, which is awesome to see, especially in watching Shi-kyung influence Jae-shin to stop feeling sorry for herself and take charge of her life. These royals sure do take their time growing up, but they make an impact when they do. I hope she can get it together and be a pillar for him to lean on, because he’s going to need it. Wah. If the mini breakdown today was just a taste, I don’t know how I’m going to handle it when the shit really hits the fan. For now, let’s enjoy the happy.

I love how Mayer's tickles our brain with Tarot cards...I have to say google worked for me yesterday.
Mayer character isn't well written for me...s'times he seems like have plan...but in next ep he only has his idea of killing JH. It seems stupid and petty.
I can't wait for tonight.
Thanks for recap.

BTW, Bong-gu is definitely a psychopath. He doesn't do things out of impulse, but plans ahead of time.

Psychopaths are more manipulative, are extremely self-centered, get bored easily, show no remorse, plan ahead of time, have many sexual partners (as was shown), always blame others for their actions, lack a sense of reality (king of the world), tend to want gratification.

That's more Bong Gu than a sociopath. A sociopath does things on impulse because they don't think about the consequences ahead of time. They don't have room for love, lack *empathy* (not conscience), will lie continuously to get what they want, will change themselves if found out.

Bong Gu is definitely a psychopath, where as many of the K-drama villianesses tend to be sociopaths (doing it because it feels good at the time, but having no regret later.)

Oh right, based on what he did, seems like he is more psychopath than sociopath.

This plan ahead doesn't get me...they usually have master plan...what Bong Gu have, only hate and little crush on JH. His plans are weak, no brain actions...and they look like Swiss cheese.
I don't get, how that people work for him...His Assistant will stab him first when time comes.

Wonder if Bong gu is still hang up on whatever happened to him when they were little. I still want to know why wrote "I am King." Still curious if there's any connection with family, business in the family or was he an illigitimate child?

Episode 15 was mostly as expected and after my fancy not very exciting.

In the first instance I have to point out my following observations and analysis are based on the raw version of this episode. So it's possible I missed or misunderstood some scenarios. Sorry in advance for that.

The WOC, which took approximately the half airtime, turned to an almost tragic end, thanks, as it seems, due to one of Jae Ha's "McGyver-like" ideas. Oh boy, do you forget you are the king now? And Hang Ah! Why did you agree to this idea? Is victory really THAT important to risk your life for?
Really, I appreciate their teamwork and trust into each other for the sake of his promise. But in reality it wouldn't work that easy. Not at all.

Yep, this is dramaland, of course. But the show begins to lose it's authenticity in my eyes.
And once I've started to take a critical look on this episode I'll continue cold-hearted. ;)
Of course it's not my intention to destroy the mood for anyone, because there were countless great, emotional and even beautiful moments as well. I just don't mention them here.

Well, let's continue.
I assure you I have no tactical or military knowledge, but the (re-)actions of the US-soldiers and several other small circumstances made me more then one time shaking my head.
Therefore I wonder how it's possible to turn on the gas and while it's spreading out into the room - even filled with running electrical equipment (!) - Jae Ha can prepare the self made fuze over a longer time period? May be I missed a crucial scene or information and I just make a fool of myself right now. But in case I didn't this was the most reckless way to produce a spark for blowing up the bunker. Admittedly, somehow "Jae Ha-like". *lol*
The US-soldiers meanwhile seemed to me like bloody beginners.
Just a few examples:
- the lighter, obviously used to contact the hostage Young Bae;
- the diversionary tactic of Kang Seok with the quad to split them up;
- the uncovered window at the backside of the bunker;
- the US-soldier, who simply run into the open yard without any sense for taking shelter from enemy fire;
ect …
Whereas I wasn't bothered by their characterization till now they aren't represented plausible anymore in this episode. Too many unlikeliness can't be overseen. At least not by me if I take just a slightly closer look.
Darn … I shouldn't do that. ;)
Besides I know they are only amateur actors, but still …
As usual in this blog: feel free to correct me if I am wrong in any way. :)

Well, there is much more I would like to comment, but since I've got only one and a half hour of sleep last night (I'm in Europe) I should take a break.

Sigh, this drama keeps me awake, albeit in a good way. ^^

@Chethaera,

Let's assume all your fault fining is valid, so, what's your point?

That you are very smart? That K-dramas don't know how to do wars or do Americans? That this episode is not good?

For me at least, why they chose to do the daring 'destroy all' to win is very persuasive, and says a lot about the character of the Koreans.

They tend to be very tenacious. Or stubborn. They take great pride in their country, and won't give up especially in competitions. I remember in past Olympics Games (yes, another 'just a game' setting) there were more than one case where the Korean athletes perceived some unfairness in judging, they protested vehemently and some even refused to yield the venues. Note that I am not saying this is good or bad. It's just something I observe about the people. What Hang Ah said to the American captain pretty much summed up the stake here. To them, it's not just a war game.

@chethaera @frankie:
Well, well, don't get mad friends. This is how things works in kdrama, and just like we had talked long before, the writers seem not much knowing about spy thingy or maybe military works. That's their weakness btw, but they have strong characterization which I adore the most ^^

@chethaera:
You have hawk eye to realize all the things,^^ for me, when I watch it I just want to enjoy it the most. The things I am digging mostly about curiosity about 'random things' Jae Ha said, because usually they refer to some issue in South/North Korea. Thanks for realize it though

I agree with @frankie, for Hang Ah and Jae Ha, this 'game' isn't merely a game. This is how they prove the public in south and north that the joint team can do well (as symbolization of the two countries), and also they stake their engagement in 'the game'. That's for me ^^

Thank you reglest, as always, you are very kind. :)

It's absolutely not my intention to get mad about anything or with anyone here. I just say my opinion, what includes sometimes my "hawk eye" for details. It's not that I search for mistakes, but this time it was simply too obvious and in that sense the mistakes came to me. *lol* I didn't meant to offend the writers or anyone here.

@Frankie: So please no reason for getting personal and for sure my smartness is not at issue here.

The episode was okay for me, somewhere ranging in the middle field. The WOC I didn't like, the second half was much more my taste.

I guess the writers simply focused on other things as the relationship and actions of our leads. By the way I am not the only one who thinks the military stuff is not the strength of this writers. Additionally I have a great respect for their ability to create suspense in general and some of the most convincing characters I've ever seen in kdramas.
The very same writers developed my absolute and all time favorite character Eun Shi Kyung and I'll be forever thankful for that! :D

I've already mentioned this is the analysis of the RAW episode 15! So I didn't understand anything, also not the fact HOW important it is to win this competition for Hang Ah and Jae Ha. And due to Jae Ha's high IQ there should have been an other method to gain victory. But yes, that wouldn't depict then his character well enough. Anyway I take what I get from this drama and usually I'm super happy with it. Three times I pointed out I might be wrong with my impression and that I left out the positive aspects of this episode for first due to my tiredness.

Anyway, I'm always open for CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

Further I'm aware about the Korean mentality and I absolutely agree with the fact they can be tenacious or even stubborn. Often enough I've observed it.
But for Jae Ha's extreme action to blow the bunker and jeopardize himself and others was too much for my sensitive mind. ;) It was a similar behavior and reaction as previously in episode 4, where Jae Ha puts the gun to his head. An impulsive and desperate reaction. Truthfully, I don't know what I would have done in his situation. But I'm quite sure if he would be still alive his hyung would be likewise terrified as a reaction of his younger brothers methods.

So agree with you.
Based on the preview, seems like Bon Bon will chase after Queen Mother and Hang Ah. If there'll be anyone to die in the next episode, I hope it's Bon Bon. Is it weird that I hope someone to die? Argh stress. Can't wait to watch episode 16.

yeah, the preview for ep 16 somehow worries me.. it looks like bong-gu plan something either for Queen Mother or HA.. and what the hell happened that JH needs some comfort from HA? (on the scene depicted him put his head on HA's lap and cry)

Omigod, waiting for tonight's ep is totally killing me. and I do really hope nothing terrible happens to our hero/heroine's side.

do something about that bon-bon girl, please!!

I think JH is laying on HA's lap while crying because he just discovered the thruth about Old Sec.. :S
JH said "Except you, I trust no one" BOUHOU!! So heartbreaking. I don't want him to go back to a nutshell where he doesnt open up to people.. At least HA is there for him!! :)
But what about our Eun Shi Kyung, JH ? Do you still trust him? You do right..?! :(

Acc to the preview it seems SK is disappointed in JH. I think the dialogue goes:

JH: do you want to punch me?
SK: yes!!

From the previews, it looks like JH protects SK by not telling him why his father was fired/quit. That's what I saw. Only JH and HA know what happened! Of course, I have not read the recaps for ep 16 because I have not seen it yet. Will be watching tonight when DF has it up.

0

well it depends on who you wish to die.. if it's Bon Bon, then no, you're not weird.. lol.
yeah I also can not wait to watch the next episode. I hope nothing bad would happen to Hang Ah or the royal mommy. :(

i'm actually scared to watch ep 16 cause that preview gave me the chills. I'd like to believe that no one from our heroes will die but with this show, you just never know. It's up in the air so I'm filled with dread and hope at the same time. This show better not pull a City Hunter! (My nerves can't take it!)

Somebody needs to shoot Bon Bon soon or I'm gonna shoot her myself! I'm sure I'm not the only one . . . did I hear someone say "Fire at will!"?

On another note - I love Jae Shin's confession to Shi Kyung and her speech at the peace conference. The Princess got them balls of steel like Shi Kyung. That's why they're perfect for each other. Gah. I love this pair ♥

The Lee siblings make me proud. And, the late King presiding over the engagement ceremony just made it that special! The Royal Lee family is something, ne?!

I had a fangirl moment in the still shots after the episode's done: the one with the boat with both crews....you can see HJW leaning against Seung-gi and the latter's leaning forward!! lkjsdlkjfdsfkjdfklsjfsakjjfs

When you KNOW the result already, but you are still hanging there by a thread!

I tell you, my eyes must have bored holes on my computer during that sequence! All the technical details, inconsistencies, disbelief, rational thoughts, MY SANITY, all gone out of the window. I was not screaming (never a screamer, hahaha) but I might as well. I think my mouse got drenched from my sweat!

All these just made the final cry-laugh-hug all the more sweeter. What an experience that was!

0

@anon @jade butterfly -

and i bet that when the show is done, we're all gonna linger and deconstruct, analyze, discuss, and debate on every single sequence until the cows come home. ;)

0

Please do not remind me of world cup. I was the only Asian in the pub watching it and when Korea won, the only idiot who cheered. I was even asked if I was Korean and had to defend myself ... "Doesn't matter! Asian, Asian ... go Korea!"

Funny, no one offered to buy me drinks after that ...

0

Yeah me too. Despite knowing the outcome of the WOC, I was sitting at the edge of my chair during that scene. Was really curious how they were going to win and was really urging JH to quickly get the job done and get out. Was actually more worried about the American soldier. While I know that JH got out alive, was not to sure about the US soldier.

Btw, your daughter sounds like mine! (She's the one going to Korea to snag LSG!)

For those wo didn't particularly didn't find this episode thrilling, I think it's because we already know the outcome. If there were no spoilers and invitations to engagement party, i think many would see this scene a bit differently, although I do admit that the scene is not hollywood standard.

I love this episode, it's not just backstories but a crucial narrative of the main story.

The extreme measures taken to win the war game, but from Hang Ah's words, it's the divide in the importance placed on the "game" due to what is at stake and the subsequent bonding between the 2 sides.

Jae Shin's admonishment by Queen Mother to be respectful to elders shows us why the Royal fledgelings and well brought up, though spoilt in other ways. Her confession to Shi Kyung, and drawn strength to confront her fears.

Jae Ha's and Bong Gu's face-off, confirming what many insightful comments here have realized, the 2 are of the same mold, though yet different in ways that may be a split decision that seems like a thin red line, yet they differ thousand of miles apart due to what they need to protect.

I'm really surprised K Drama is serving such a different fare, and that the writer is a lady. She goes to length to stick to her narrative, even venturing into war games which is not natural to her experiences. I don't think another story like this will be executed in the future, so savor it while this show lasts.

Totally agree with your comment about the main writer stepping out of her comfort zone to nail her point she's trying to make.

When we complain about the stagnant and boring nature of certain K-drama trends (that's really impeding it from moving upward artistically), we need to give risky and daring innovators their much deserved cheers and appreciation.

I savor this drama. Every episode. And I strongly hope that this won't be the last venture for the time to come. I hope our support give the K-drama new wave a chance to take hold.

GF. To me the last two epsidoes were sort of placecard spots. But it was needed to lay out the princess's recovery and also how old man was going to get revealed. The big real has not happened yet but they needed to lay the groundwork.

I am starting to get a little concerned about Jae Ha and his playing this game. Going to the dark place because he needs to is fine. And I found the part where he allowed John's girlfriend to walk back in knowing she was going to be killed to be bringing his A game to this fight I am a bit worried he is not going to be guilty by association but because Meyer sets him to kill or destroy someone who turns out to be innocent.

Put another way Jae Ha being ruthless with JM is fine ...Hell it's needed. But ruthlessness needs to be kept on a strong chain and I am not sure Hang Ah knows how far he has gone without telling her and how she will react.

She was restriaing him with the 'fair play' postion she took but Jae Ha did those first hits back at John Meyer without filling her in on what he had done.

Thanks again, gf! I chortled at: I seriously think he might cry. Or crap his pants. It’s fifty-fifty right now.

I love that as a soldier, HA is a badass woman who makes the best of both her badassery and her womanhood. She's badass enough that she was able to put an end to the NK scary-go-round incident using her physical prowess, and yet she's also woman enough to know that offering your kogi to your former enemy (who are now houseguests) is the right (and smart) thing to do.

And I super love that Jae Shin was able to witness the release of Earnest Bot's earnest bottled-up emotions and that the way he gathered up his strength after that was what inspired her to gather up her own strength. I'm a huge sucker for relationships in which each person serves as a catalyst for the other's best self to come forward.

Episode 16 and I was on the verge of tearing my hair apart at midnight here. And I was watching it RAW, not understanding the full meaning of what they're saying but....ARGHH. Shall wait for the subs and restrain myself from reading the recaps a few hours later.

Counting down to 6 more days...as patiently as I can muster. ARGHH.

btw, the writers' touch is back! Finally producing what they're best at despite several turbulent earlier episodes, in my opinion.

First of all, I don't want another City Hunter outcome as in the death of the prosecutor represented by Shi Kyung. Second of all, I don't want another East of Eden ending where the lead guy dies just after getting married, here represented by either Jae Ha or Hang Ah.
I swear if that happens...Ah...stress!
On another note, Lee Seung Gi is going way overboard. Damn, his acting is superb (especially in episode 16).

By the way, I'm on board with all the SeungGi-JiWon shippers! They would be one awesomely-gorgeous-uberly-hot-royal-couple :)

I am with you about Shi Kyung's character. Only a few things give me hope, and one of them is that everybody is kinda expecting something bad to happen to him. So far, the series has been good in surprising us; we just do not know what to expect.

You know, I want to buy this drama when it comes out... but ONLY if they give a good ending to our main leads, and that includes Shi Kyung. If they kill him or his character doesn't get the justice he deserves I'll go berserk!

I have this strange feeling it is going to be something that sure will blow our mind. As much as I don't want Shi Kyung to be killed, I don't want out OTP to be seperated by death, but I can imagine the writer going that path if it means to eliminate Bong Gu for good :S

Right. It is a tragedy if Shi-Kyung has to die. I will cry much if this ending happens. I really want to see his love for Princess Jae Shin shines in the end.

I swear LSG in episodes 15 and 16 is becoming more handsome than before. I don't know why -Is it the smile or the tears?Excellent performance for all the actors. They can all be nominated to receive awards especially the Queen mother for her brilliant potrayal and of course HJW and LSG.

@mtoh -
The crazily delusional Bonggu has been obsessing over being king since school days('I am king' window scribble) so , its right up his crazed logic that since
the 'Queen Mother' births Kings so, if he wants to be king , he wants to be associated via this crooked rationale.
He already established that his mum is someone else & his dad dumped them. Unless , the writers are going to throw us a curve ball , that JaeHa's dad had an affair & birthed this troll.( No disrespect to YJM, I hate u as Bonggu )

Dum Dum Duuuuum! Okay, another great episode. But I can tell this is just the calm before the storm. Things are really going to get going now (hopefully). Bong-gu is so freaking annoying, he makes the perfect villain.

I loved Shi-kyung's moments again. He is so awesome. And his breakdown was heart wrenching. I love that Jae-shin confessed to him, leaving him speechless. And speaking of Jae-shin, she grew so much in this episode. I'm so proud of her.

I loved the bits between Jae-ha and Hang-ah, but the WOC felt wrapped up hastily. And I can get that, for the sake of the story, but still. Why?

And, MORE JAE-KANG! Yay and Wah! I miss him! He was awesome!

Thanks for the recap, Girlfriday!

I don't mean to be a buzz kill but I really wasn't feeling any excitement for the first round. I knew they were going to win the first round and frankly, hang- ah's crying just kinda annoyed me. Oh and the speech she gave to the american team leader, was that supposed to be a tear-inducing moment? Not making fun of it, I'm just curious, because it just left me confused and not sure how ti react. I don't remember what was said, but I got the impression as if it's everyone but the americans that din't miss their families when they're in war or whatever. Not trying to spark a debate here (it's kinda late anyways, now that the thread already has 271 comments before me) but I found myself more interested in shi kyung and jae shin rather than the lead couple. I'm sorta getting bored with them. Maybe it's because after so much choas with the baby and hang ah coming and then leaving and them coming back that now when they're on the same page and not fighting, it seems kinda weird.
But I guess that's the calm Before the storm, eh?
The preview for the next episode looked sweet though. Looking forward to it. Somebody's gonna be having some daddy issues, aren't they?

What a great episode for Jae-shin and Shi-Kyung! Both of their scenes had me in tears! Queen Mother, so proud of her daughter!. The tying up of the WOC was nice. The engagement vows given by the late King was an excellent choice of the writers!! They continue to surprise and amaze us!

One scene that really stuck with me from this episode was JH and his (beautiful) trembling hands when he was wiring up the bomb in the American's command base. His nervousness was so palatable! That's what I love about this show - the way the characters react are realistic and consistent - clever as Jae Ha is and despite being armed with the know-how of how to wire up the bomb, he doesn't suddenly turn into Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible and nail the wiring with no sign of nerves.

Thanks so much for this summary.

I can't stop myself loving Eun Shi Kyung and Princess Jae Shin. But I don't understand why Shi Kyung cried that much.

I wonder was it because he blamed himself for the princess's suffer or because he had to apologize Bong Gu.

My friends, anyone please give me a hint. I am looking forward to it.

Both your suggestions and also the fact that his father had to bow down to the one who killed the late king.(emphasizes on his father bowing down in apology) because he's such a daddy's-boy who's daddy means the world to him and maybe is his role model. To see him bend his head like that was too Much for him

But i agree, the crying was a little unnecessary but at the same time necessary because he had all that pent up anger and frustration and worry that it had to come out sooner or lalrer. I say i'm glad it came out on the cone and not a person :)

But earnest bot how I love you so. I would totally dig for an awkward boyfriend like him. Keep him locked up in my closet. THAT'S IT! BY The power in me as a reader of db recaps I claim EarnestBot (and the man who plays him) as MINE!

I think it was having to apologize to the man who killed the king and also being overwhelmed by having to ignore Bon Bon and all of her taunts about the Princess and his imagination of what they might have done to her.

Just watched the subbed episode. While I too like this drama a lot, the resolution of the WOC round 1 is annoying as it mars an otherwise well written episode. I do not understand why Jae Ha has to proceed with the third bombing of the command post when he already got the two keys to the boat from the other US soldier. It seems to weaken Jae Ha's character as he seems to risk lives without much thought (KBG's girfriend previously and the US soldier with him here). Found the whole WOC segment lacking impact and irritating with this illogicallity on top of the bad acting of the US soldiers (in fact all the acting of the foreign actors in this drama seem amateurish). Anyway, I know that is over with just needed to vent on this.

Ultimate point grabber in a game of war. Remember, they had the 10 point deduction so they had to go for the most points which was to blow up the command, storage and communications!

My understanding was their aim at the onset was to get both keys to win despite the deduction. It's only when they lost the key that they switched plans or maybe something was lost in the translation.

I'm not sure if you are still reading this thread, but they couldn't win with just the keys because they dismantled the boat. I doubt they'd have had time to reassemble it in time to get off the island. Remember, the "endgame" was to actually leave the island, not just to possess the two keys.

What I wondered about that scene was why he didn't take the unconscious American soldier's body out first and then set the bomb. Jae Ha waited till he set the bomb then dragged out the US soldiers body and himself to safety. I guess maybe he was caught up in the moment, but it didn't seem that smart and put them in more danger.

Ooh...the first part in the WOC: I liked that wle get to see Jaeha as a hero =) and I so so love that Shi Kyung just put down the phone on the maniac =P

The best part about the WOC competition was seeing the whole gang back together. Other than that it seemed like the writer felt obligated to finish up that storyline or that they were using it to explore some political issues they wanted to address. I understood why they chose to tie it to the engagement happening, but I didn't like that aspect because it seemed unnecessary and dramatically a lame duck given that we already knew our couple would get engaged and Jae Ha had already risked war to be with Hang Ah...so now he's gonna bet on a game. Just not on the same level.

Shi Kyung and Jae Shin are on the level of the OTP, main couple. Their story is so awesome and moving. I relate more to their struggles than to Jae Ha and Hang Ah whose relationship is mired in politics.

I have to say the Royal family guards and security basically suck. Shi Kyung needs to do a better job with that whole situation. Seriously. And I know the next people to be in danger will be Hang Ah and the Mom.... I know Sec. Eun's demise is coming soon, but absolutely NO heads have rolled for real or metaphorically for Jae Kang and his wife's assassination. Ummm, I'm not happy about that at all. I want some justice for our late King!
