The King 2 Hearts: Episode 16

Awwww yeah! We’re back, baby. Now THIS is the show I know and love. Bring in da stakes, bring in da tears, and let’s get down to business. Betrayal hits like a ton of bricks, but it feels like being dusted with powdered sugar compared to what’s around the bend…

EPISODE 16 RECAP

Secretary Eun sneaks away from the engagement to take a call from Bong-gu’s minion. He offers a choice: Jae-ha abdicates the throne peacefully, or he will be removed by force. Otherwise, Shi-kyung gets told about his daddy’s extracurricular misdeeds.

Uh… I’m thinking the asking price is a little low there. Sigh. Minions. Though on the flipside, Eun is the man who sold out the last king’s whereabouts for an LP, so… even stevens?

Secretary Eun tells him to go ahead and tell Shi-kyung whatever he wants to, because he is no longer going to listen to any threats from the likes of them. Well now. Look who graduated from amoeba in the final stretch. Now, would it have killed you to grow this backbone like three fatal mistakes ago?

Minion takes that as Door Number Two, and drops his voice, “There will be blood,” like he’s been waiting his whole minion life to say that line. At the same moment, Jae-ha and Hang-ah toast (With red wine? Really?) and the clink sends her glass shattering. The Wine of Portent splatters on her white dress.

She frets, but he smiles and tells her that it’ll all make for lasting memories. They walk through the crowd and wave, and then some kind soul chants, “Kiss! Kiss!” and soon the whole crowd joins in.

Jae-ha side-eyes Hang-ah, and then spins to face her, and pulls her in for a kiss. Gah, the all-the-way-around-arm-wrapping just does me in.

The parents watch with embarrassed but adorably happy smiles.

That night, Secretary Eun calls Shi-kyung out for a chat. He asks how the Anmyundo investigation is going, and Shi-kyung says he’s going to be back on the case now that the engagement is over.

Dad lets out a long contemplative sigh, and starts to say it… but can’t quite get the words out. He just says that it’ll be over soon. Shi-kyung looks at him, confused.

Dad then goes to his office and writes his resignation. It details all of his nefarious exchanges with Club M, leaving nothing out. He takes one long look at his office of over thirty years, and then walks through the memorial hall of all the kings he’s served. He stops at Jae-kang’s portrait, “Do not forgive me, your majesty.” He bows down to the ground.

Jae-ha and Hang-ah discuss her picking up some of the queen mother’s charity events… while they get a couples massage? Ha. Okay, who’s brilliant idea was it to find some way to make Seung-gi’s cheeks look even more chipmunky? Hee.

Hang-ah suggests that maybe she could go to North Korea to do some of her charity work with a big smile, and Jae-ha tells her to have a good trip to the foreign country then. Heh.

But spa time gets cut short with an email from Club M. He goes to his desk to open it, and Hang-ah urges him to ignore it. He says it’s better to see what’s coming, even if it’s coming to explode all over them, which I’m all for. Let’s see it then.

He opens the email, filled with evidence that Secretary Eun sold out the Anmyundo location. Bollocks. HE’S JUST ABOUT TO TELL YOU HIMSELF! Aaaaaugh.

No matter how much I hate Cruella de Eun, I was all for him owning up to his crimes. He was so close! But I suppose you can’t expect the universe to be on your side if you wait till you’re backed into a corner before confessing.

The email has every bit of damning evidence – call logs between Eun and Bong-gu, Eun’s signature on clearing Bong-gu to enter the country, recordings of their phone calls.

Secretary Eun knocks on Jae-ha’s door and enters the office, prepared to hand in his resignation. But he walks in to hear a recording of the very call where he gave up the Anmyundo location.

Jae-ha just stares at him, blinking in disbelief. He finally asks blankly, “What is this?” Augh it kills me that he still wants ajusshi to say he didn’t do it. He asks if there was ever a time that he purposely conveyed lies between him and Hang-ah.

He says yes. Jae-ha asks, still disbelieving, if he was the one who changed Jae-shin’s entrance music at the conference. “You didn’t, right? You didn’t go that far, Ajusshi. Right?”

Still not raising his head, he says it’s true. Jae-ha looks up at him, stricken. He says that Anmyundo, he understands—it was a mistake, and he didn’t know who he was dealing with. But the rest… the rest…

Isn’t it just a twist of the knife to know that he would’ve been forgiven if he had come clean right away? But that’s the grave you dug for yourself, old man.

A tear streams down Jae-ha’s face as he continues to plead, “You were like family. Thirty years. Father chose you. Hyung trusted you. I leaned on you more than anyone. How could that Ajusshi…”

Ajusshi hands over his resignation, which just gets a scoff from Jae-ha. Quitting again? He says he’s not asking for forgiveness, and will take every punishment. Jae-ha makes it clear that he’ll be arrested and charged for his crimes.

Secretary Eun warns him to be careful of Club M, especially right now, and Jae-ha asks bitterly why—did he give them something else? He finally lets loose, screaming at the top of his lungs: “YOU ARE A TRAITOR!” Oof.

That’s what stings the most, of course, since he’s done all this while convincing himself that it was for the greater good. Jae-ha continues: “You committed high treason! Allowed foreign invasion! Aided and abetted an enemy of the state! YOU ARE A TRAITOR!”

Secretary Eun doesn’t deny any of it, and says he will accept the punishment for all his crimes. But he asks just one thing… Shi-kyung… Aaaauf. Don’t even get me started on the heartache you’re going to cause, old man.

He bows down to the ground on his hands and knees, and pleads with Jae-ha not to tell Shi-kyung (Well that’s just absurd—how will he be kept from finding out?). He says that Shi-kyung is an honest, upright man. He IS. And idealistic and hopeful too, and you’re about to fuck with that.

He says that he’ll tell Shi-kyung himself. Oh. Okay. At least you’re going to do that. Although I don’t see why you’re going to set yourself up for another circumstance exactly like this one by waiting. But then again, you’re not historically quick on the uptake.

The palace reels from the news in every corner. Shi-kyung comes to see Jae-ha and asks if it’s true that his father was dismissed. And despite his anger, Jae-ha keeps that promise to ajusshi—he pretends that he finally had enough of their personality differences and let him go.

Jae-ha says he’s old now and their paths are different. Shi-kyung argues for his father—that it’s different methods, not different paths, and that he served this monarchy for thirty years.

But Jae-ha cuts him off coldly, “He’s too old. He’s an old fogey. He smells foul and he’s stale.” Harsh words, but it effectively makes him the bad guy, and not Ajusshi.

Shi-kyung can’t believe the words coming out of his mouth. “Are you the king I know?” Jae-ha: “Why? Do you want to hit me?” And without hesitation, Shi-kyung answers, “Yes.” Omg, you two are gonna make me CRY. Stop it!

Jae-ha lets out a tightly-wound sigh, and tells Shi-kyung to take a vacation. He answers right away that he’ll be staying right by Jae-ha’s side (Thank goodness.) until he finds out exactly what happened between him and Dad. (Balls.)

Jae-ha yells after him, “Ya, Eun Shi-kyung!” but he storms out, having made up his mind. Thank goodness for your dogged trust, but I’m scared for you.

Hang-ah reads Secretary Eun’s letter of resignation. She says sympathetically that he must’ve had a hard time, and Jae-ha just agrees absently. She starts to make a case for forgiveness, but Jae-ha counters that Ajusshi used his trust against him, all this time.

Jae-ha: “I’m a person too. I need time.” Right? Hell, I still need time and I’ve known for weeks! She tells him to rest, and he says he’s got a million meetings to prep for, but she yanks the papers out of his hands and pats her lap.

She pulls him toward her and he lies down, head in her lap, and takes her hand. So sweet.

And then he wraps her hand tightly around him, in this gesture that kind of kills me—it’s the way a child tries to envelope himself in a mother’s arms for comfort, like it might be possible to make a monster-shielding blanket out of her embrace.

Hang-ah: “Are you scared?” Jae-ha: “Yes. Everything except you… I’m scared of. I don’t think I can trust people.” He shuts his eyes to stop the tears, and she leans on his shoulder.

Bong-gu sits at home, obsessively watching Jae-ha’s video letter for the millionth time, like the crazy stalker that he is. He even drunkenly answers, as if they’re having a conversation. HA. Anyway, he proceeds with The Plan.

Jae-shin is all gung-ho to scoop out her memories, but her therapist warns that she’s the one who locked them away, and forcing that back out could lead to panic. Yes, we’ve already been through the panic. Now it’s time to push through anyway, so get out your hypno-baubles, lady, and help a sister out!

She tries on her own to listen to “Ride of the Valkyries,” but it sends her reeling and she tears the headphones away. Shi-kyung comes by and she asks him not to resent oppa too much, because there must be a reason they don’t know about. Shi-kyung agrees, still trusting Jae-ha despite it all. Aw.

He asks if she’s not going to sing anymore, reminding her that she used to, all the time. She takes that as a cue to sing now, and he stammers awkwardly that he didn’t mean now. Ha. She tries to remember the song she first sang to him, but can’t recall it, so he helps her out.

He sings the first line, and his voice startles her, so she pretends not to know how the rest of it goes, and he ends up singing the first verse for her, as she plays along. She takes him downstairs where the acoustics are better and hands him a microphone, wanting to record him.

She says that if he does well she’ll debut him as a singer, and when he balks, she promises not as an idol. Heh. She asks if he wants to sing it as a duet then (Yes please!), but he refuses, and starts to walk out.

She asks if he hates her that much—she confessed her feelings, and she’s working so hard, but he won’t give her the time of day. He tells her that what she feels is curiosity and nothing more, because they’re so different.

He says that she’s right about him being no fun, and when she gets to know him, the shininess of the new toy will wear off, and she’ll be sick of him. She swears that’s not it, but he tells her to stop messing with him: “I don’t want to become a plaything.”

She says she’ll ask him one thing then: Is it because she’s disabled? He answers right away that it’s not that, he swears. She starts to cry as she supposes that even if it were, she couldn’t do anything about it.

She asks one final thing: She sang that song to him just once, so how did he remember it? Is he a genius? He says, voice trembling, that it’s because the princess sang it (aww), and walks out before she can ask any more questions.

Hang-ah heads to Somalia with the queen mother to do charity work, and Mom gives her a purse as a gift on the way. They get relocated to a different hotel because the place they had originally booked just got blown up in a terrorist attack. UM. Red flag, anyone?

Thankfully it’s enough of a red flag to send them back home in the morning, but they’re here for the night. The staffer heads down in the elevator, where she sees a woman with a strange tattoo…

Mom sighs that she really wanted to see one of the children who had barely made it last time, who lost his mother to tuberculosis.

Hang-ah says that her mother died of the same, because a penicillin shot cost as much as a kilogram of rice, and she could never afford it. She doesn’t say this with any heaviness—just matter-of-factly—adding that she and Dad moved to Pyongyang soon after, and there were plenty of vaccines.

Mom takes her hand and asks what kind of person her mother was. Hang-ah says she was so young so her memories are faded, but her mother was a translator, and would read her stories at night, like Gulliver’s Travels.

Mom says that Hyun-joo (Jae-kang’s wife) called her “mother,” and that here when a mother and daughter-in-law are close, they just become mom/daughter. She tells her to call her “mother” instead of “her majesty.” Aw.

Hang-ah lights up, and tries it out awkwardly. Mom laughs, “Minus the accent.” They hold hands and laugh.

But this is no time for laughter, because Mia and her band of assassins are already here, shooting their way down the hall. They take out the guards and knock on Mom’s door posing as room service.

But Mom’s no dummy—she would be escorted by secret service if everything was on the up and up, and she scrambles for the phone. But the lines have been cut. She runs to her cell phone, but before she can make a call, Mia’s standing right behind her with a smile.

One of the secret service manages with his last breath to pull the fire alarm, which sends a stampede through the lobby. It’s enough to make Hang-ah pause, and she comes out of the bathroom cautiously.

She comes out to find Mom sitting on the couch at gunpoint. Her eyes widen. But then I love how her look changes when another gun gets trained on her—she looks over at it like it’s a fly challenging her patience.

But clearly she can’t risk getting the queen mother killed in a hostage stand-off.

Shi-kyung wakes Jae-ha up in the middle of the night to deliver the bad news—both Hang-ah and Mom are missing. He tries calling her, to no avail. (I love that he’s saved her number as Hang-ahr-ie, turning her name into a homophone for “vase” but meaning “lovesick-for-Hang-ah.”)

Bon Bon pays her hired help, and then promptly shoots them in the back, for her hostages to see. Damn. Then they get loaded onto a plane.

Jae-ha gets briefed that there are no ransom demands, and the two accomplices have been killed. Shi-kyung says that another kidnapper was caught on film, but only from the back—she had a barcode tattoo.

He immediately remembers that detail from Shi-kyung’s investigation into Mia. Shi-kyung confirms that Club M is the likeliest suspect. Jae-ha realizes that Bong-gu is going after his people, one by one. And Bong-gu purposely ignores all his calls, wanting Jae-ha to fry a little longer.

Meanwhile Hang-ah and Mom get moved to one of Bong-gu’s lairs. Hang-ah eats diligently, and assures Mom that the food isn’t poisoned—if they wanted them dead, they’d be dead—and tells her that she has to do the same to keep up her strength if they’re going to escape. Nice.

But Mom is scared witless, and says that Hang-ah might be able to because she’s a soldier, but she’s too frightened to try. Hang-ah tells her they have to try something, anything, to help the king.

Bong-gu interrupts to make his grand entrance, and Hang-ah recognizes him right away. She puts out her hand, “Kim Bong-gu-shi.” Ha. I love it. He pretends not to be bothered by it and squarely ignores her, and she totally smirks.

He goes straight for Mom, asking her to join him for tea, and when Hang-ah objects, Mia hauls her away at gunpoint.

Hang-ah’s father has come down to help Jae-ha, and confirms the Club M suspicion. I’m so glad he’s here, if only so he can witness this next scene:

Jae-ha asks Shi-kyung if he’s still getting the runaround from Bong-gu. “Whatever it takes. You know, right? Tell them I’ll do everything. I can go there myself, or lie down and beg. I can do it.”

Dad looks up at him. Shi-kyung whispers a protest. Jae-ha: “It’s Hang-ah. Hang-ah and Mom. You know my mom. She won’t last.”

Mom is currently cowering in fear over tea with Bong-gu. He sits watching her for a while, and then calls her “mother,” like he really does think he and Jae-ha are friends.

He comes closer and says that she reminds him of his mom, though his mom abandoned him to run her bar, tossing him in boarding schools and expecting he’d grow up okay. But even Bong-gu knows that what he really craved was his mother’s love.

He says he really was a good kid, so she should feel sorry for him. Aw, Poor Widdle Psycho. There, there.

He gets to the heart of the matter: Mom should tell Jae-ha to give up the throne already. He oozes with compliments for how dignified she is, noting that his own mother was so different, so crude.

Finally Mom opens her mouth, “Crude? How can a child call his own mother crude?” Hahahaha. Are you in trouble now? Daebak. And it just gets better.

She totally chastises him like a child, for blaming his parents for his own flaws, for claming a rough childhood when most people who endure hardship are better for it. “I am Jae-kang-ie’s mom! The mother of the man you killed. Even if you paid for your crime and then knelt to beg for forgiveness, it would be lacking!”

But instead he’s holding her here, and for what—to use her as bait against Jae-ha? “Do I, does the royal family, seem that easy?” She stands up. Oooh nice. He stands up and sneers that he was trying to be nice, but she just blows up at him.

“Fine. Kill me. Go ahead and kill me. Kill me! Do you think my children will flinch at the likes of you?! I’M going to take revenge on you! For our Jae-kang, our Hyun-joo, our Jae-shin’s legs, our Hang-ah’s baby. Even if I fall into hell itself, I’m going to take you with me as I go!”

So. Badass. And then she HITS HIM, with her tiny mom fists. I LOVE IT.

She goes to town, letting loose a barrage of swears and insults, asking how his mother gave birth to such rotten trash like him and still ate seaweed soup, as she hits him over and over. See, Mom, you’re plenty strong. You just had to get in touch with your inner rage.

Jae-ha finally snaps that he can’t take it anymore, and decides to just storm over there himself. Shi-kyung pleads with him to stop—this is exactly what they want, for him to go crazy and out of control. He calms down and gives Shi-kyung ten more minutes to get him through to Bong-gu.

Secretary Eun has locked himself away at home, and hasn’t answered any of his son’s thousand calls. But he does see the text that Hang-ah and the queen mother have been kidnapped, and takes Jae-ha’s call.

Jae-ha says nothing—all he does is dial and then listen. But Secretary Eun humbly offers his advice: to use Bong-gu’s international influence against him. Basically if he alerts the U.S. and China of Bong-gu going off the deep end, it’ll cut him off from major powers, and he’ll have to back down. He advises that Jae-ha stay calm, cold, and rational, and act decisively.

Exposition Minion tells Bong-gu that Jae-ha’s gone through diplomatic channels and for some reason, the U.S. and China frown upon the kidnapping of royals. Who knew? Bong-gu sighs that Jae-ha’s gotten smart, and agrees to a meeting.

Jae-ha goes to see Bong-gu, who plays dumb about the whole kidnapping, even as Jae-ha offers to do whatever he asks if he just lets them go. He says he’ll postpone the wedding, and Bong-gu finally says that IF he had kidnapped them—purely hypothetically, of course—then a measly broken engagement wouldn’t be the right price, would it?

Jae-ha asks what would be. “Your resignation.” His eyes widen. Bong-gu blathers on about who would take his place then, ruling Jae-shin out in her condition, and mentioning a sixth cousin. “Isn’t politics not your kind of thing anyway? It’s dirty.”

He suggests with a smile that he should gather up his loved ones and go live on an island in comfort, and leave the politics to others. He walks off, leaving Jae-ha reeling.

Bong-gu walks out, smiling as he passes by Shi-kyung. Aw, it’s Cookies and his unrequited love. Shi-kyung runs in to check on Jae-ha, who spends the entire journey back in silence.

He washes his face and comes out of the bathroom to find Hang-ah just sitting there, waiting for him. The lighting changes as he comes upon her, so this has to be a dream. She comes closer, and they look at each other with such loving eyes, and he asks, “This is a dream, right?”

She cups his face in her hands, and he clasps onto her hands with tears in his eyes, hugging her in desperate relief.

But then he notices a strange expression on her face, and asks why. Hang-ah: “Take care to eat well. And don’t forget to exercise.” He starts to cry and asks what’s happening.

She just keeps going, “Every sadness is just for a time. Because it’ll all pass someday.” And then she takes his hand.

Suddenly Mom calls out for Hang-ah, and she goes to join her. He tries to hold on, but she pulls away from his grasp. And then he looks up and they’re gone.

He’s left screaming, “Mom! Hang-ah-ya! Mom! Hang-ah-ya!” it startles him awake in a cold sweat.

Bong-gu’s minion shows Hang-ah a video of Bon Bon playing bloodthirsty hairdresser with Mom, and tells her to persuade the king to comply with their demands.

Meanwhile Shi-kyung is trying to do the very opposite with a scared and desperate Jae-ha. He can’t abdicate the throne and play right into their hands! But Jae-ha’s last nerve has cracked, and he asks why not.

He breaks down, “What if they really kill Hang-ah and Mom? I’m not that strong a person.”

*whimper*

He says that he’s lasted this long on obstinate pride, but he can’t do it anymore. They’re going to die. “I didn’t even want to be king! Why do I have to hold onto this seat while Mom and Hang-ah die??”

Shi-kyung has no words to make it right. Jae-ha tells him he’s sorry, but he’s going to live comfortably now, intending to give it all up.

Hang-ah watches as Mia threatens Mom with all manner of torture, and finally caves. “I’ll convince the king… to resign.” Minion tells her he’ll set up the video, but Hang-ah turns to him with a scheming glint in her eye.

“I’ll do it in person. Don’t you think it’ll be more convincing face-to-face?”

COMMENTS

Yay for the return of life and death stakes and heroic moments for everyone. I just about lost it when Mom talked down to Bong-gu like a misbehaving child and then wailed on him with all her momness. It was So. Awesome.

Bong-gu really stepped it up as a villain in a big, big way, and I’m ecstatic about that, for the sake of the story. There’s been enough messing about and pulling hair and getting in little jabs on both sides. Time for the real fight.

And as much as Bong-gu has his fatal flaws, he really is brilliant as an adversary, because he’s managed to take away the one thing that gave Jae-ha his confidence—his trust in his people. Jae-ha taunts him with that one thing Bong-gu will never have, so he deals that blow to Secretary Eun. Which is really just aimed at Jae-ha, because it levels his sense of trust in his people. And then just when he clutches onto Hang-ah for dear life as the only person he can trust, Bong-gu yanks her away from his side.

I love that this episode is filled with shots of Jae-ha in the foreground with Shi-kyung standing behind him in the background. There’s no fanfare about it, but he’s just always there. It’s telling that of all people, it’s Shi-kyung he apologizes to, when he’s at the end of his rope and about to give up the throne. It’s like Shi-kyung’s trust is what gives that position any meaning. This episode had great moments for both couples—Shi-kyung’s accidental confession that he memorized every note of that song, and Jae-ha and Hang-ah getting to such a supportive, honest place—but it was the bromance that really did me in. When they had words over Dad and Jae-ha was trying to protect Shi-kyung by being the bad guy and Shi-kyung continued to trust him anyway? I kind of swooned. I can’t help it! They’re just so perfect for each other!

Jae-ha’s emotional progression just in this episode alone, ripped me up good and proper. When his betrayal turned to fear, and that fear multiplied turned to desperation and despair? It kills me that he’s ready to give it all up, but I know that his people won’t let him. Hang-ah will kick ass, and Shi-kyung will find the words. Right? RIGHT?

By the way is everyone still thinking that there might be a mole in the Palace? I get really frustrated how Club M always seemed to know where the royal family goes (e.g Hang Ah and Queen Mother) and the Palace people know nothing.

They seriously need to hire more people like Shi Kyung and try to think one step ahead of Club M for goodness sake.

LOL! I was just thinking that too after I watched Ep 16. Not only do they know where they Royal family goes, how do they get their phone numbers too? It's so easy for Club M to contact the palace but not the palace...imagine they have to go thru the US & China diplomats before they were able to get hold of Bong Gu! That even shows how powerful Club M is compared to the S. Korean's monarchy. How sad and scary is that? good thing this is only kdrama hehehe :D

I expect that the QD and HA's trip to Somalia was widely publicized ahead of the trip itself. It is for charity works and a source of good publicity for the royals. So it was probably announced to the press.

As for Club M getting the mobile numbers of people in the palace, I suspect its not so hard to do. They can either have connections with the mobile network provider itself or even own the company secrectly (i.e. subsudiaries and stuff). Or as you said, they have a mole in the palace. I mean there must be a lot of people that works in the palace, and finding one or two amongst those that are hard up for money should not be hard to do.

I agree. I'm sure Club M has links or probably controls the mobile networks. Not to mention the flight schedule is most likely a cinch for them to get

Hang Ah and the Queen mother went to Somalia to do charity work. That was officially.
Bong Gu had his hands in from that point as the hotel they originally wanted to stay was attacked by terrorists (surely charged by Bong Gu). So the two woman had to change the location last-minute to that place they were kidnapped in the end. I'm sure Bong Gu prepared it from the beginning to have an easy access for his assassins.
Bong Gu might appear haphazard but in real he has enough time and money to set and execute his evil plans. Additionally he has a lot of influence, especially when money flows.

You know you are desperate for your favorite characters to have a happy ending when you analyze everything, even the OST's.... For example, Jae Shin and Shi Kyung's love song end's like this:

"When sadness passes, you will be my one and only love
When the tears dry, you will be my one and only sun
Little by little, slowly, I will go toward you
I can't forget you even for a moment

I love you, as I only dream of you
I love you, I breathe only for you
Like the long, long wait
I won't let go of these hands that I hold
Forever with you, whom I love more
than the moment I first met you"

To me, that means that, after all the suffering and everything, they will be together. Right?? RIGHT???????!

Now after I saw ep 16 with sub I think JH worth the pain going through because he was the one who challenged BG without "the right weapons" ready to fight and he also suggested indirectly how he can be hit (ep 15- as his strength is the people who believe in him). And I'm afraid that the next blow will be SK. Maybe the only way JH can to defeat the BG is economic destruction of his business or his credibility on the world market.
And the end ... everyone will live happily until old age with their children ... a princess and a prince ... Except for the BG and BB will live in an asylum by eating chocolate and cartomancy and looking at K2H. I would like that !!!

So...Since I rewatch episode 15, to escape from episode 16 sorrow, please don't mind that I'm listing all the things I love here again, okay? Okay??*begging*:

-Bad foreign actors, in fact, while I watch episode 15 I found the actors acting is acceptable. Probably because in episode 14 they need to do some 'mayor action' scene, and just admitted, it looks awkward indeed. But in episode 15, well,,,all is acceptable, (at least for me)

-Problem&tense between Korean Team and US settled with the most primitive way: Food. I'm chuckled a bit while typing this, but you can't deny that hunger is the greatest nature of human to force you do something. And I also love how the writer chose BBQ meat instead. Not just because the meat is limited, But Hang Ah choosing the most nutritious one, and warm food. It's symbolizing the desire in sharing, welcoming and protecting.

-I don't care How many times I've said that I LOVE Jae Shin speech to the core. I feel like such a proud Momma. Jae Shin's speech is not just an act to prove herself in public eyes, it built and constructed how she need help from other to stand just like her country!! At least for now. Kyaa!! My gutsy and bold princess is gaining herself back!! Also love how she glance and smirk to Bong Gu (YA! EAT THAT BONG GU!!)

-Can I say that I love the WOC meeting? It's like small UN meeting-or that's what I imagine- without veto right, and all of the country participating given the same right for vote? *raising eyebrow*smirk*

-I love the badge exchange!! Anyone else noticed that it's the exchange of united country symbol?? NO? Well,..then..okay, I just love it! Maybe it's the reason why the writer choose US as the 1st opponent, to exchange with similar 'united country' ^^ PS: I also love how Korean team is defeated by Egypt, remember? They considers Egypt as weak team, but team Egypt is in Big Three!! WOW! Speaking the Dark Horse here ^^

And don't forget Jae Shin's confession, Shi Kyung hang out Bong Gu's phone*plonk*-and named it as Rotten Biscuit- kkk~, engagement party (and reappearance of Jae Kang).

Wowww...those beloved scenes are so many, and now we are trapped in deep sorrow again. The writer really know how to describe 'calm before the storm' aren't they?
Off to watch episode 16...with subs now*preparing buckets*

Thanks for the opening, reglest! Was planning to comment on ep15 after reading comments for ep 16 as I'd just finished watching the subbed ep 15 too.

I say more power to the ladies of tk2H! Loved, loved, loved them in that ep, especially:

1) JS - perhaps I'm getting out of touch but the girl making all the first moves is still rare nowadays, is it not, in both real life and kdramaland? I just L.O.V.E. how she tells SK plainly that she likes him - no coquettishness, no beating around the bush. And that speech? Do I need to say more? As Randy Jackson would say, props! props! more props to you, dwag! (*whatever that meant!)

2) HA at the badge exchange. I loved the way she showed the team leader in her by suggesting the badge exchange. In that scene, I thought she completely held her own as a woman among all the men. Was so proud of her!

I'm also with you on the foreign actors. Previously, I'd said they were the weakest link. They probably still are but ep 15 was't too bad. Not too much cringing on my end.

I loved the food exchange too. Esp when HA said, wow! they even have dessert and goes all cute and wide-eyed. Reminded me when she was applying moisturizer to JS's legs at the hospital and was told there's a different cream for the feet. Her look of wonder and amazement kills me. It ties in so well with the never-dated/pure lips/cream-loving side of her that is such a contrast with her take charge/kick-ass/don't mess-with-me side. Yet that is who she is. I love how the characters in this drama stays so consistent.

Favourite part has to be when she runs to the burning command post thinking she'd killed her love and their sweetest hug so far. That scene when JH struggled to stand and sighed, Till the end, you still don't trust me. Yet he was smiling, so happy to witness for himself how much she loves him. I so loved the way HA threw herself into his arms and bawled her eyes out, her arms going around him too and of course his going SO TIGHTLY around her. Ah, swooon....

The proposal hug always felt a little wanting cos HA didn't hug him back. Why, heh, PD?

Gonna savour subbed ep16 tonight. Can't wait....

that hug after the explosion, and with the smile on his face, hang ah n jae ha really earned that hug. i think i've longed for them to hv that for such a long time. come to think of it, it's like compensating our proposal hug scene.

n yup, i got teary watching that

I watched that part over and over. And the tense situation before that. Like you said, the Americans aren't too shabby, especially the captain. His lines warning Hang Ah that Jae Ha might die, cutting in with the flashback, and then Hang Ah's hesitation and finally declaration of her love...Wonderful.

And Jae Ha's comments that why so loud, why cry, did someone die...So typical guy thing to say...

Required fields are marked *

I think that at the time of the engagement hug, Hang-ah hadn't really fully processed their reunion and she wasn't completely ready to forgive Jae-ha yet. Grand romantic gestures are all well and good, but consistent action trumps romance in a real relationship. She needed to feel (not just see) that Jae-ha cares for her just as much as she cares for him. And I love that the past couple of episodes have shown us that they are now on equal footing in the relationship. They both love and respect each other and depend on each other for support. Seriously best kdrama couple ever.

Unfortunately, this is the 'old video' which only contain 28 countries, number of countries participating is around 31 if I'm not mistaken.

I'm sure the staff already watch it:
1. One of soompiers (gita) mention @uniq81 (Kwon Hyun Sang who plays as Dong Ha), and he replied with: OK!!!! Yes with 4 (!)
2. The video it self made news in Korean internet, I forgot is it Nate or naver, but we made it!!

the k2h soompi project was great! Dramabeans can do the same -
I looked at how many comments about K2H epi 16 are posted in this site so far - 918 comments . This is the most discussed/ most commented Drama, i've checked it. Is there a way to collect these comments and pass to K2H production people? They need to know what they have spawned.
I am guessing this site is mostly international fans? I am non Korean fan and I live in N America so I am not sure if Dramabeans is accessed in Asia or Europe or Middle East continents? I watch the drama online TV VIKI mostly and the other sites. I don't watch TV at all.

I am from NYC USA, and very amazed at the popularity of this drama internationally, gauging from the commentaries seen in this thread/forum. The producers are, I'm sure, more than pleased to know that, in spite of the less household tv viewers locally as reflected from the weekly low ratings, internet/online viewing tops the competitors. No doubt it would also be a commercial success if the video(s) will be exported to international markets, China, USA, Japan to mention a few. Just my thoughts though.

Girlfriday, thank you for your recap! I enjoy reading your recap and also your personal views!

Lee SeungGi really makes my day like a roller coaster. Before K2H, I enjoyed watching his previous dramas like Shining Inheritance and MGIG. I like him as a singer too. But at that time, My liking to seung gi is not as crazy as NOW, esp after his perfect potrayal as Lee JaeHa.

His acting is improved so much! I like his mature image. But in the same time, he is still the funniest, cheeky, humble, caring, loving & romantic seunggi that we all know. HAHA! i love his fashion sense in K2H. So So So handsome! Before I have never thought that seung gi is handsome. HAHA! But now, my eyes & heart is OPEN! hahhahaa!

I love Ha JiWon too! I really do! Before I'm worried about the 9 years gap. But now, I feel Seung Gi and Ji won is really compatible!

Ah-Ha Chemistry is Daebak! I can't express it through beautiful sentence.

Other than Ah-Ha couple, i love bromance between Shi Kyung and Jae Ha too! Shi Kyung's loyalty make me salute and respect him. Also Jae Shin's courage to appear in PUBLIC, make me feel touched.

K2H is too fantastic and I feel that they deserve a recognition. I don't really care about rating now, although I hope, in the next 4 eps, the ratings is improving. But It's okay. I can feel that the love from all fans all over the world.

Happy Mothers Day to every mothers out there!

Last night, I tried to watch the "Classic Kdramas" but to my dismay, none excited me anymore like when I watched them at first.
I think watching K2H spoiled it for me. After the mental and emotional stimulation I experienced from K2H, I have become more discerning and picky now about dramas - ouchhhhh, perhaps this will cure my drama addiction - since I will be very choosy from now on. LSG and HJW captured my heart now, and they better do a follow-up movie or drama as exciting otherwise it would be the death of kdarama for me. I shall resign myself to rewatching and reliving K2H. But how long will that last??? The soundtrack is super- its my playlist now.

@ iluvk2hlsg

I experienced this phenomenon once after reading some excellent books. After that it became (and it still is) very hard to find something proper to read, which is even roughly at a similar level.
The same happens when the kdrama writers are entering a new level of entertainment. And we - the viewers - want more shows/movies of this quality.

Of course. ^^ Once you've eaten your soup with salt then why ever eat it again without? (*lol* just a poor metaphor from me)

@chethaera,
There is a novel I read called "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Housseini -- made me cry.
Latest book I read " The Marketing of Evil" - non-fiction. This is a serious commentary of how our society have changed and why. Serious reading!
I need another good book- any recommendation?

I am also watching the drama "Unexpected You" -a nice, light drama exploring married life and relationships with in-laws. Easy to watch and I don't have to think. LOL. I like watching relationship/family dramas because I learn from them and it also helps me understand Korean sensibilities.

Sorry this is out of topic- just want to share.

Back to the subject.....

I am still processing K2H - there are so many interesting relationships and character study from this drama:
1.between LJH/KHA- we haven't done talking about this pair..and I don't want to stop talking about them.. :)
2. Jae Shin and SK - later
3. Queen Mom and her children,Jae Kang and Jae Ha
4. LJH and Secretary
5. Secretary and SK
6. SK and Jae Ha
7. Bong Gu and Jae Ha
8. WOC team
9. Hang Ah and her Dad
10. Club M and the world
11. SKorea and NKorea and the monarchy
12. Seung Gi and K2H and who were the actors who rejected this role?
13. Romance in kdrama
14. the nutty fans of K2H - who are we? and why are we here at all? did Club M buy you too? LOL .. Ahhh stress!!!

If I were a drama teacher, I would make this a subject for character study for my students. It is so rich. Who is the writer and what other work has he done before this? I am curious!

Here's what I'm thinking (kinda inspired by KHJ's promise to hi-5 every one of his fans at his recent fan-meeting here, which he did fulfill):

each of us who attend this wrap-up/wean-off fan meeting gets 2 minutes of lappy time with LSG; either you lie on his lap or he lies on your lap, you choose (for me, it's a clear choice - I'll lie on his lap cos I'm ticklish that way). So, one hand in an embrace, the other stroking the head. 2 minutes. That should be closure enough for me.

Now, how to get him to co-operate?

SEUNGI in Sageuk drama will be good. I think he can be a realyl great Joseon-era or pre-Joseon king. or has dramaland already exhausted their history files? If there are no more historical figures, then create a fictional Joseon-era king for LSG. HJW can be the Queen/Princess.

I wanna see him in a hanbok.

Sigh, 2 more weeks, how to wean ourselves from K2H. Shall we say goodbye folks? Why don't we decide to watch another drama together and dissect it to pieces like we do K2H? Gong Yoo's BIG? Or Gentlemen's Dignity? those two sound appealing to me and I like GOng Yoo from Coffee prince. it better be good. i don't expect these to be another K2H in terms of depth, but I need something light to soothe my wounded heart (K2H you are such a heart breaker).

Agreed. It's tough to just pick a replacement drama to "reconvene" on, because the joy of this show is that it's just so meaty. All of you commenters are incredibly smart and insightful, and K2H gives us all the chance to "shine" in a way. I sincerely hope that there will be another drama that allows for this level of engagement and dissection, but part of me feels that this is a once-in-a-blue-moon alignment of amazing acting, writing, directing, topicality, and commenters.

One more thing: I'll absolutely remember you as my partner-in-K2H-obsession! You're definitely a pillar of the K2H recaps. :)

I've seen HJW in bed with JIS and SJS in WHIB, 2 extended kissing scenes with HB in SG but this head-on-lap scene with JH strikes me as her most intimate scene with a co-star yet. Yes, even without lips touching, their love feels so real.

Yeah, I agree that that scene was SO INTIMATE because it was just so real, and also so indicative of the maturity of their relationship. Maybe the most intimate scene I've seen in a kdrama. Jae-ha was so vulnerable, and Hang-ah was just this pillar of emotional support for him. It was incredibly beautiful, it made me cry (and I rarely cry when watching things). Just stunning.

It killed me when he turned his face into her lap (for a brief moment). It was so heartbreaking that he wanted her to envelope him within her warmth and protection. When Hang-ah's eyes welled up with tears for the worst betrayal (and hurt) her fiancee had encountered it was incredibly moving! *sniffles*

i always attribute it to the WRITER. Just amazing understanding on how it is to love. i wish i could shake hands with him just for putting all these very subtle yet satisfying and unforgettable love scenes that they put into screenplay.

most importantly and thankfully , i believe the fates have a play in this, what with the casting and all that we have these two wonderful actors one who is coming to terms on his own after this drama and one that is like a beacon to her costars and one who reveals to us that their chemistry is so palpable because it's the first time she is so in tune with her costar.

IF NOT FOR THIS CHEMISTRY ...(ok so many wonderful couples in dramaland comes to mind...) but nothing i've ever seen yet that comes so close to reality.

i don't think even with the lap scene mentioned ( and a few others *dream sequence ) would deeply strike us to the core and make me for the first time even comment in a drama so much w/out this deep connection.

i just adore the narrative of this couple and so unforgettably played by our two leads.

thanks HJW & LSG even though the reel can never be real but thanks for making it meaningful for us viewers.
you both rock!! :)

Ah, the writers really know how to show the real love in the real world. You know, physical intimate session is needed but putting in understanding and support in the scene have just made it more realistic and valuable.

As for me, in love and life, you need a person who can be your partner. I used to hate (yeah, was soo immature) when a guy cries, but looking at k2h perspective, woman does not only need a guy who can protect her, but we also want a guy who wants us to be there as the special someone whom he can lean on and share his burden with.

And that my friends, seal the deal of love.

I'm watching it subbed now and that scene just had me melting all over again. *sniffles* It was really a beautiful scene. I've seen lap scenes before where the guy lies on her lap and she's so hesitant to touch him but this one...they were locked in an 'embrace' even though he was on her lap.

Beautiful.

Yes.....I've watched several too but mostly it is the man who wants to lie his head on his beloved's lap. So I'm so glad to see that Hang Ah is the one who initiates the gesture to let Jae Ha rest his on hers. And the way she caresses his hair and arm.......It speaks for itself how much Hang Ah loves and understands her man.

Deeply in love to this couple. The best and most lovely couple in my Kdrama, If I may say.

I agree. Sometimes you don't need hot making out sessions (I wouldn't complain though). It is those moments (head-on-lap, hand-on-cheek, deep stares) that make their love and interaction look so natural, real and intimate. Love them together!

I can go on and on about the dream sequence. I've commented about Jae-ha's gamut of emotions during this scene. When he almost gasps with relief upon hugging her = rendered me speechless!!

It's funny how us fans always finish off these comments with, "oh, but we don't mind an uber-hot passionate kiss/embrace". They can go the passionate route when Hang-ah (& mom) return safely. *prays fervently to drama-gods*

Sorry SG fans, i loved SG but not as much as i love K2H.
Although SG had alot of skinship, i've got to say K2H has me oogling even when they are not kissing/having sex.
Their relationship by far has the most emotional impact on me than alot of other dramas...
"their love feels so real"

i so agree with you guys! the Ah-Ha couple's quiet moments rock any hot and passionate bed scenes, and their fridge-makeout kiss sizzled the screen, that's for sure!

Watched Ha Ji Won's "Win Win" interview last night... and love her more. Such dedication to her work. My heart ached hearing about all her injuries as an action star... ouch.

Go watch it, guys... helps to tide over to Ep 17 :)

By watching in details, I found some discrepancy in the story..
1) in ep 16, HA mentioned to queen mother that her own mum died when she was young. HA's mum was able to read stories to her until she contracted TB. But in Ep 7, when HA'sdad was kneeling and asking JH to take good care of his daughter, he said that HA's mum died soon after she was born. I hope I did not take the translation wrongly.

2) in the tent kiss episode on JH's first love, JH told HA he was sent to a normal school. But in ep 16, BG mentioned to queen mother that he was sent to royal school by his own mum. So the schools were not in line. Both JH and BG Have to go to the same schools else how BG stabbed JH with his pen?

3) in ep 14, in the ship going to the island, in 32:15 when dong- ha passed something to young bae, he was with the Korean peninsular sticker. But when the scene flashes back again, he was without the sticker.

Anyone spotted these like me?
Guess this TK2H is into me so much that I did not like the imperfections discovered.

Nevertheless, Really hooked into this drama. OMG.. Watch, look out for recap, comments, rewatch ep 1 to 16 again..what is this drama doing to me?

Look at the preview ep 17, BG seems to hv done something and want to keep JH from knowing.. Did someone died? Did the mother Queen died? I do not think HA died, probably being shot? Argh.... The waiting kills...:(

I don't know about the other 2, though now that you mentionned it.. I also thought HA's mom kinda died in childbirth or something.. :S
BUT About the schools :) JH didn't go to the same school as BG.. He was on visit with his mom to Jae Kang's school and was looking for his hyung when the meeting with crazy BG took place..
He was not in JH's class or school so JH didn't remember him at first because they only interacted when he stabbed him and then pull that crazy creepy move behind the window.. UGH. Was a freak back then too ..

Here's what I think:
1) Hang Ah's dad said she lost her mother when she's little. So she needed to do housework and tried to take care of her father too. Also remember translation is not always correct.
2) Jae Ha was VISITING Jae Kang and BG's school when the stabbing occurred. Maybe the queen mother was thinking about sending Jae Ha there too. But she eventually decided not to (maybe little Jae Ha complained too much?).
3) Just let it go.

Thank you amtee for clarification. U r right about the translation is not always correct. So nowadays I watch the Chinese sub first then the eng sub so that I make sure they are tally. But at times, I am surprised that Chinese sub reveals more details than eng sub.. Hee

Like the let it go part meaning u noticed it as well..The careless part.. Well, I will let it go for my love for JH n HA..

*But at times, I am surprised that Chinese sub reveals more details than eng sub.. *

Panda, that's actually not a surprise at all cos the Chinese language is alot more similar to Korean than English. So many Korean words sound like Mandarin or one of its dialect, Hokkein.

Whenever I watch a drama on DVD, I almost always watch it in Korean w Eng subs first then in Mandarin audio w Eng subs to get a fuller picture.

Yeah babes. But there are times that eng sub are more accurate than chinese sub. Like the scene after engagement party, when Eun secretary asks his son where is jeona. In chinese sub, SK says that the king is having some private time with his fiancé after the royal elders session. But in Eng sub, it says that the king will be having separate room with his fiancé till wedding after lecturing from the royal elders about their premarital sex. So different version...hee..

Also, chinese sub usually comes put 1st before eng sub..
Am learning Korea now but is still a long way to go ya..:(

JH went to a regular school.JK and BG went to the royal academy.JH and QM were visiting the academy and there was a fight and that's how JH get stabbed by a pen. With HJW, I guess you could interpret " born '' as few years but if her father said " after birth " then definitely the mother died after delivery.

Eun Shi Kyung, my heart is finally making a place for you. When you answered the princess, "Because you sang it." plus your steadfast belief in my JH, believing that he had his reasons for firing that skunk father of yours, feeling his pain like it was your own, holding back your tears as he cried...thank you, thank you.

Btw, can I just tell you how much I like watching you run? Almost as much as I like watching LSG walk. And that's saying ALOT.

I say, we are dedicated, aren't we? It's 12:32 am where I'm at so I have at least a couple more hours according to your standards. ;)

And had you been holding back on your Eun Shi Kyung love and not noticing what a wonderful, trusted, straightarrow, dedicated, loyal friend he is? It could be 'cause he's almost too good to be true. I find myself thinking, "I want one!" I don't care how supposedly boring or frustrating he can be. We need more Eun Shi Kyungs in the world.

I love that he doesn't mince words or play mind games. "Because you sang it" is what he said. He didn't say, "Yes, I am a genius" (jokingly or otherwise) or try to downplay it.

Oh, and I love how he runs, too. His breaking into a sprint when he realized it was JS laying on the ground at the bottom of the cliff, comes to mind. The man even runs with dedication and determination. *sigh*

I let out a giggle when you mentioned his "skunk father", no doubt due to his hair. Which got me to thinking.. do you think his hair color demarcation is symbolic of his treading dangerously on that line that separates the light side from the dark side? It's just so stark of a line that I'm thinking there must be a purpose other than failure to do his roots.

"And had you been holding back on your Eun Shi Kyung love and not noticing what a wonderful, trusted, straightarrow, dedicated, loyal friend he is? It could be ’cause he’s almost too good to be true."

Don't be mistaken, Bot fans, I appreciate all his good qualities but I guess like HA, I'm more attracted to bad boys. What should be avoided at all costs in real life is best compensated for in reel life, to borrow maria's words, doncha agree?

"The man even runs with dedication and determination. *sigh*" - LOL. Agreed.

As for "skunk" father, I really can't take the credit. This nickname came up in earlier comments by one of our fellow brilliant hearties. But you got the symbolism. *clap, clap*

Like rearwindow, I'm starting to soften towards this flawed "loyal" servant. However, like JH, I need more time and need to see more redemptive action. Seriously, how could he have continued "sleeping with the enemy" even after JK's death and JS's injury?

I dont want to be paranoid but there is a bit in ep 17 preview that is really bugging me and I find it disturbing. What is the secret that BG wants to keep from JH?
Is it that Queen Mother or Hang Ah is terribly hurt, injured, escaped ? Or .. please let it not be true possibly dead? That's why he wants to keep it from JH to not loose his grip on him and to continue playing him as a puppet since if JH knew , all hell comes loose.

I have this terrible egging feeling about this, I hope , pray and wish to dramagods that my hunch wont be true!

IKR...the previews can really cause a lot of stress. It could be a ton of things though...maybe it isn't about HA or the queen mother but about the state of Club M. With all that's happened, it would be too cruel to kill HA or the queen mother.

@ ann
@ random person

Yeh I was thinking it might have to do with Club M as well. I think Jae Ha will go full on at investigation on Club M and maybe find some dirty secrets on Club M's activities since it's possible they might be involved in some corruption/conflict of interests type of thing. And realistically that's actually a really good way to bring down such a big corporation. There HAS to be something in there that's a bit dodgy. But then again you really need tonnes of evidence and unfortunately Club M's money can get them anywhere...

HAHA but then again I'm not too sure lol. People are saying that maybe Hang Ah and Queen Mother ended up escaping and Bong Gu wants to keep Jae Ha in the dark... But there's really million of possibilities and the preview always deceive us and our guesses and predictions are always turned upside down :(

DAMN i told myself I won't look at any videos relating to K2H but I went and checked out that scene again and see that Bong Gu's reaction is more of a concerned, serious look with a slight fear. I don't know what it means anymore lol.

@ A - agree with you that the previews throw viewers off sometimes... it must leave you in suspense so you'll come back to watch, right? ;) that said, i wondered if Hang Ah ended up doing a video conference withi Ja Ha to tell him 'face-to-face' to abdicate. cos in the preview it looked like Ja Ha was having a video conference when he shouted "Hang Ah!"....

Ep 16 you got me on floor with tears in the eyes...

I always thought everything what Eun do is for the RFamily, to make sure they survive because he knew how much money BG gives. What fool I was until the advice, I restored my faith.
Eun on the knees I've felt like watching sageuk drama. JH words, tears...some things just can't be forgotten or forgiven. 'Family' Scars don't heal that easily.
'I'm scared of everyone but you. I can't trust people'...OMG, you bought me. It's just like saying: You're part of me, I only trust myself. Can girl ask more?
I love SKyung and JS, he always good with word and she's the one who push them to be close.
Well played BG, right time, right place...Somalia. And that scary pictures on the wall...it suits you.
Queen finally opened up, and took all her grief on the right address...×superb.
Oooo HA you look like and angel with all that light around you...my heart stay still.
'What to do I'm not that strong'...this is when heart rip in two parts; beloved ones or country.
I've enjoyed every second of episode...to go thru cold-hot-boiled emotions, worth endlessly.
And smirk on HA face is promising ;)

Very nicely put.
I love to see the contrast in Jae Ha's reactions to betrayal.

This time he controlled his rage. He did not lash out. He even said to Hang Ah that he needed time, to forgive what the secretary did.

This paved way to secretary's redemption. I am sure the old man has more to give to Jae Ha and the royal family. Of course, he owes his own son that as well.

I have been thinking because SK does not know the true reason behind his father's seemingly cruel dismissal, he's having concerns about his dad's (and of course his own) positions and standing. After all, they were there to serve the royal family. They can be dismissed just like that. So the gap between him and the princess was made even clearer. He knew things were that simple between the king and his father. And he's too loyal to Jae Ha to be quitting him right now. But to the princess, while he loves her, he does not want to open himself up to an eventually futile (in his mind) and painful relationship.

Done with episode 16 for now! And still struggling with swollen red eyes, snorty nose, and hoarse voice plus Mom's glare because I'm crying in the middle of the night....

- Is it wrong for me to feel emphaty with Eun Senior? Now I can't called him Cruella de Eun anymore. Can't stand it, at first I feel he is so despicable for betraying the royal family and so, but it's contradicted with his recent action...now after episode 16 finally I can connect to his emotion. And to see this lone old man kneeling in front of Jae Kang's picture while his body trembling, My heart can't stand it. This old man is pathetic, as he said, he want to keep his merit still but fortunately he regained his consciousness and support uri King. But...it still unforgivable... I don't know, my feeling conflicted within...

-Again, I'm so touched with family relationship within this drama. Previously I excluded Eun family from the sweet bonding relationship, since...yea..at that time he still Cruella de Eun. But seeing how he beg to Jae Ha to not telling his son makes my heart crumpled, Eun senior still desiring to be a father that his son proud of, and How Shi Kyeong back off his father in front of His King, just show me how deep their relationship before. For every boy, their father is their hero, isn't it?
Also loving Hang Ah-Queen mother relationship, Queen mother gesture is so welcome, so warm, no wonder her daughter in law doesn't feel awkward to call her 'omoni'- though in my culture it considered habitual, but Is till understand this process.

-Someone here has said that, but I want to repeat it again and again, the scene Jae Ha resting his self in Hang Ah's lap is executed beautifully. I love how Hang Ah offer her lap to his man, it's like saying : this is the safe place you want to. And how heart breaking it is when Jae Ha grasp her hand, and covering him self into her hug, it feels like he is a baby who seek for comfort from her mother, his trusted ones. She stroke his hair while letting him sleep in her lap portray the unbound relationship between them, and while he comfort him self, she lean on his shoulder, resting on him vice versa. I love how this pair lean and depend on each other, the gesture might be small, but has deep meaning...

-Uri Queen Dowager and her tiny fist. Again, I am amazed by her performance, as always. She turned out from scared old woman, to an angry mother, her emotion is so palpable that I'm shedding tears for her. I do think she actually pity Bong Gu, but him cussing her own mother change it all, how can a mother hear other mother get curse by their own son? For me, that is her turn point from scared to angry. I love that our queen mother isn't cunning type like Sageuk type, or that weak type, begging to get saved. Our queen mother is just....a mother. And it conclude all, mother.

And uri Seung Gi...I don't think any praise and adore will work for you now. You just make me speechless!! How came you make me cries along with you?? I hate you for now!! I need to go to my friend's wedding and I've used the ice cubes, but the swelling won't go. Now ottoke?? What if they think I'm crying because I can't let her husband, like i'm third wheel, or worse..my friend??-aka lesbian- now ottoke? Oh, OK, I might forgive you for your one-unbuttoned-white-shirt in dream scenes, you look so sexy in that *wiping drool over the screen* but you kept make me cries after that, so should I forgive you or not?

Anyone else feel the last two episodes feel rushed? Previously the production staff let us breath in the the role shoes, and shows us every little detail, but not in the last two episodes. For example, I think Jae Shin's speech scenes need to get more time, like how she struggle herself in the hospital. Or the scenes when Eun Senior finally decide to resign and how he bow in front Jae Kang's portrait. Those scenes already edited beautifully, but I will not mind if they add some depth within it like how they used to do before. Though I know...the peril of the live shoot is the most probable reason who forced them to do this...also the airing time, can't conflict with this one.

Ok, I need to leave now, should use these ice cubes well, and hoping the swelling is gone when I arrived at the wedding *sigh*

And in the last second of the scene, Jae Ha slightly elevates his arm for Hang Ah to be more comfortable on her leaning position. Perfectly done!!!!

In my own opinion, viewers of K2H are intellectual people..Reading those deep insights and comments you can tell what type of person they are.. In the drama "you have to read between the lines" to get the message..It is full of sense and quality..I need not to elaborate the details anymore cause we all know it.. :)

Thank you for the insightful recap, Girlfriday!!

As one of the over 1000th commentators it's really, really hard to add anything what isn't said yet. And I have read all of them, cause they are as same addicting as the drama itself. I'm super happy to see there are people like me, who think and feel like me and some are even in a similar situation. Usually I'm a loner, but not here. A great feeling! :) Besides the comments make the loooong time between the episodes somewhat more bearable.

@ stressor: "sense and quality"
Absolutely. As the viewers as the drama (or vice versa). TK2H entered a new level and made many people very happy with "feeding" their hunger for an intelligent drama staffed with exceptionally gifted actors (or those who just became such, as LSG).

This episode was fantastic. Even the kidnapping of the females, what is like a cliché by far too often in dramas in my opinion, went better I thought. Nope, I don't say it's a good thing Bong Gu uses such low methods, but both Hang Ah and the Queen mother can show him personally how strong the royal family really is. Of course I'm worried what will happen to them in the next episode. Especially the Queen mother already suffered enough, not physically but mentally. But just as Shi Kyung I trust into the abilities and intelligence of our young king. He will find a way to rescue them safely. He is not alone.

Much more I'm worried about our Earnest Bot, who actually doesn't behave as his (by girlfriday(?) given) name says at all.
Usually he tells the truth. But it seems he even don't trust his own feelings, respectively he's afraid of them. Truthfully I can understand him. In his position it's not easy to make a right decision when a princess confesses her feelings to him, even not, when his heart screams at him desperately. Who said mind and heart working hand in hand?
Shi Kyung might be the captain of the royal guards, hence he needs to be tough, both inside and outside, at the latest, however, his voice reveals his surpessed feelings. It seems he isn't good at lying at all. What makes him even more adorable, if that's possible. Just listen to this heart-melting trembling voice … *sigh*
Oh princess, take your man before it's too late!

Primarily I see this drama through the eyes of a writer. And I know writers like to use various methods to give the audience or readers a hint what will happen sooner or later, such as songs.
My gut instinct isn't getting better when I read the lyrics of the song Jae Shin sang for Shi Kyung.

First Love (처음 사랑) Lyric English Translation
In he beginning, like a dear friend, like lover
From the moment stocked your heart in my mind
My fluttering heart says that it’s the destiny
Believe in the immature first love
Even if breathing also feel happy
It’s the love like the sun
I thought it’ll be forever
Only memories left
Now my heart is hurt, shedding sad tears
Even if leaning on my cheek, it’s okay
The memory of whole body full of wounds
It’s okay to remain
It’s my first heart that first chose you
Because it’s the first love, that’s good enough for me
Guarding my first love forever
That kiss with you is magical and exhilarating
My heart begins to beat just like this
Whisper of love that is hot like a flame
My first love that had dreamed of the future
Your smile makes me smile
Love that is like the stars
Satisfying, really, at that time
Beautiful times
Now my heart is hurt, shedding sad tears
Even if leaning on my cheek, it’s okay
The memory of whole body full of wounds
It’s okay to remain
It’s my first heart that first chose you
Because it’s the first love, that’s good enough for me
Guarding my first love forever
The first love that used to love happily

If Jae Shin and Shi Kyung will have a kiss scene the time has come to worry about the validity of the lyrics and especially about Shi Kyungs destiny.

Although I have to admit that I'm one of those who could deal with it if they let Shi Kyung die at the end. It's not that I'm not afraid of it.
It would break my heart. For sure.
At the same time it would make this drama REALLY DRAMATIC for me, and that's what I'm longing for at Korean dramas. Nowhere in the world people "die" as beautifully as in this dramas. Sounds that weird?
Well, despite all that "roller-coaster"-emotions this drama gives us, I still know it's "just" a drama. As long as I'm sure the actor stands up with a smile on his/her lips after his/her death I'm okay with it.
Gah, the view of a writer. T_T

Wonderful comment. I love your analysis of Shi-kyung. It's interesting and spot-on that he seems to have trouble trusting himself. I think this is part of why he's so devoted to Jae-ha. Jae-ha has an amazing ability to identify what he is feeling and to share that with those around him. Additionally, he's brave and thoughtful, and he's not afraid of his own emotions. In fact, most of the time he uses them to his advantage (except when Hang-ah is in danger, since she has become such a pillar for him and without her, he can't think straight).

I'm with you in that, from a writer/director's perspective, I would be ok (dramatically) with Shi-kyung dying. It would COMPLETELY gut me to have this happen since I love him as a character, but from a plot perspective I would understand the choice.

Doesn't mean I would LIKE it, though.

Do you feel that, as a writer, you're learning a lot about the construction of plot and the building of relationships? I respect this drama so much that I feel that it's teaching me things about how to weave plot and relationships together in an organic, compelling way.

Thank you, rearwindow. ^^

Yes, Shi Kyung and Jae Ah complement each other in the most effective and efficient way, besides they create a beautiful bromance. I love this moments.

In fact I'm just a hobby writer, nonetheless, character development, their relationships among each other and the plot in general is a never ending learning process for me. This drama finally is one of those rare (and among kdramas the first) which satisfies my little writer heart. I learn from it, simultaneously I see parallels to a plot I work at since ages for a novel I intend to write (in German though, which is my mother-tongue) and there the characters I developed till now are resembling to some from TK2H. Especially Shi Kyung shares a lot of similarities with one of my main characters, what sparks off my inner fire, as you can imagine. :)

Yeh remember the episode where Jae Ha was talking to Queen Mother in the greenhouse about getting Jae Shin to be Queen for a while and how Kim Bong Gu killed Jae Kang? I think she was trying to connect all the dots.

And I don't know why but I just feel it's very highly unlikely (but I might be very wrong here lol) that Kim Bong Gu's related to the Royal Family. He's just a guy who has too much money to throw away and nothing but more and more power will satisfy him.

On the preview for epi 17 that is shown at the end of 16 epi. we hear BG telling his side kick - "JH does not know, keep it a secret"
I am thinking - maybe Hang Ah escaped????? therefore BG wants to hide that fact from Jae Ha?as a form of torturing JH..
it looked to me that JH and HA were having a conversation via video chat and the connection was suddenly cut?? the look of fear in JH's face - I am scared to know what happened there..

and SK learned of his father's sins? SK is broken- hearted who will comfort him?? Look at that weary back so bowed down.... poor SK..

The ‘Section TV’ reporter asked Ha Ji Won how she felt about the engagement and she answered in the way Kim Hang Ah speaks, “Today we are getting engaged. We’ll live happily from here on.”

Then both stars were asked who was getting the better deal out of the engagement and Lee Seung Gi made everyone laugh by contemplating the question.

The reporter pressed for an answer and Lee Seung Gi jokingly mumbled, “No..I was gonna say I was the luckier one.” Ha Ji Won though gave the perfect answer, “It was not an easy engagement at all, so both of them are lucky”, and Lee Seung Gi playfully admitted defeat.

Ha Ji Won and Lee Seung Gi had both chosen the marriage proposal scene as the most memorable scene of ‘The King 2hearts.’ Ha Ji Won stated, “It is the dream of all women. It still lingers in my mind.”

When Jae Shin asked Shi Kyung in tears, “I only sang that piece once for you. But How do you remember it. Are you genius? “, he said, “It’s because the princess sang it,” and left.

My friend, what did he imply by that response? Did he mean that he remembered the song just because it was his duty to take care of her as a royal member. So he had to remember all of her sayings and actions ?

If so, it appeared to be his refusal to her love. Then it really was a brokenheart feeling for Jae Shin. :(

that was Shi Kyung's bot heart saying "You're important to me (in the romantic sense)". @maeye86 articulated it quite nicely. And in Ep 7 when Jae Shin was singing to him that song, the way he looked at her was of someone starting to fall in love at that moment NOT someone who was trying to memorize the song she's singing out of duty, in case he needs to repeat it in the future.

Although I think he really is a genius for knowing that song he only heard once. Human flash drive? He truly is a bot!

I must say the "lap pillow embrace" in epi 16 - to me is the most romantic and touching scene I have ever seen in a Kdrama- this scene equals a hundred kissing scenes -in terms of swoon factor....
The relationship between JH and Hang Ah is the most equal in kdrama land- they are equal in status (guy is a prince-later king, and girl is a daughter of a general), equal intellectually and socially - and they equally love each other.
So refreshing after watching so many kdrama plots involving rich guy -poor guy vice versa and a wicked mother-in-law or disapproving family type of love story, this K2H pairing is quite refreshing.
K2H actually has a story to tell and the characters are explored in depth and doesn't insult the intelligence of the viewer. This is one story one can sink into - I have never been excited about a drama before until now.
So I don't feel foolish chatting here and leaving comments coz I think I am conversing with like minded sane people who love a good story and excellent acting.

In episode 16, the last scene where the King is breaking down and ready to snap and do something rash, it was SK who stopped him and protected JH from himself - now that is a real friend. He stood up and spoke his mind when it was needed, other times he was just the dutiful subordinate. I love SK character, how he stood up for the King and also how he defended his father - he was loyal to both his father and his king at the same time- it was absolutely brilliant writing! How SK was mad at the king for firing his dad at the same time still maintain his faith in his King, believing that it wasn't done out of spite but because of a reason and he accepted that. Thus he could love and be loyal to both his dad and his King.
I love the look on SK face while watching the King unravel -it was saying "i'm beside you, count on me"-- if SK wasn't there at that moment - who knows what JH could have done?
It takes just a fraction of a moment of "insanity" when the mind snaps to do something rash and irreversible. JH was lucky to have SK by his side at this moment.

And the dream sequence was so needed to restore sanity to JH. At least even in his dream he could hold his beloved. That is enough to restore his equilibrium.

The look of fear in JH face because he might lose his beloved...is so palpable.
He was very willing to lose everything to have her back, that's how deeply he was invested in their relationship.

Jae Ha was very forgiving, even after sacking the Secretary, he still listened to his advise. And he also took the bad guy side so the Father will not be dishonored in front of his son. JH showed his honorable and noble character here. (In Joseon era, the secretary would have been either poisoned, broken to pieces, or exiled quickly! him and his entire family)

The look in HangAh's eyes - you can tell she has been strategizing in her mind. She never lost her composure during the kidnapping. That's a mark of her inner strength- she is a trained officer after all. I am glad both her and the queen did not weaken before their captors but remained composed throughout. It would not have been queenly and dignified if they showed them whimpering and cowering and wailing when they were captured...

I commend the writers here! It's like reading a good book, very engaging. I hope they maintain this until the end.

Ohh I make correction to my earlier statement, I did not watch 100 Kdramas , thats too exagerated- i think about 30 and a dozen korean movies for the last 2 years. My first sageuk drama was DongYi , and my first romance is Coffee Prince. ahh Gong Yoo how can I forget you, you are safely tucked somewhere for now.

But now it's all about Seung Gi. I adore you to pieces LSG. HJW , you are my favorite actress!!! I must seen most of your dramas. you are my most beautiful female Korean Star.

Hurray for this drama K2H!!!!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY again!

The Queen is the best mother is dramaland -strong, courageous, and the epitome of nobility!. Imagine accepting a North Korean officer to be her daughter-in-law? She is quite progressive and broad minded.

JS's memory loss is due to traumatic brain injury (TBI)-related amnesia. This is due to the swelling of the brain in response to the injury.

So, it wasn't a plot device to stall her story line but since she jumped from the cliff I'll say it fits perfectly.

Oh yeah! you are so right about the list of 4 No's. :)

Hang Ah and her scheming to get escape Bong Gu - it really shows how she's fitting her royalty role perfectly. In fact, all the royal women - Queen Dowager, Jae Shin and Hang Ah - all showing grace and composure under great pressure.

I will never forget the bravery Jae Shin shown when she chose to jump off the cliff than have Bon Bon push her off the cliff in a car to fake her accidental death. Couldn't believe my eyes. that was one helluva brave girl. after her standing with clutches and the speech she made at the peace conference in ep 16, I'm really hoping she'll get more chances to kick ass in the next episodes.

I swear, if there's one thing i absolutely LOVE about this drama is that it doesn't include the stereotypical k-drama stuff.
It's more of an 'adult' drama in that it doesn't feel the need to include things that supposedly makes the people happy. It steps OUTSIDE the box.
It brings forth a new idea, a new plan, a new execution.. and many more.
It surpasses all the typical k-dramas in that it does not try to please its audience, and it's ORIGINAL.
The writers are following what they believe in and aren't being influenced by the public.
I mean honestly i will be looking out for these Hong sisters, as much as i love the other Hong sisters as well.
If anything, THIS drama MAKES what other dramas will hopefully follow in suit doing.. that is, if they're smart.

Much ado about kissing scenes...

I still like the innocence portrayed in Kdramas- I hope they keep it that way. The reason I quit Hollywood produced tv and movies is the in your face "sex". I don't need to see that. We want to see romance, and I think K2H really did a good job in this department. It has very few "skin ship" but the romance is TOPS. I believe most viewers of dramas are women and we experience romance differently than men. That is why, hugs, touches, gazing, and subtle moves gives us more "swoon factor" than heavy necking scenes.
K2H romantic scenes I believe were staged by women - for example- in the refrigerator kiss behind-the-scene- I saw women were staging it, so it really came out so romantic. They did not even kiss long, just light touching of the lips- but the entire scene was sooooo romantic. And a few of viewers commented noticing the moments where Jae Ha just gently carressed HA's palm and finger, and touched her wrist, etc ., those moments were really highlighted in this drama - and the lap-scene, and the embrace - and the gentle kiss on the BBQ scene - - these scenes taken separately- were only very brief moments, but the impact - whewwwww gives me goosebumps and reminded me of how I felt when I was first falling in love. This is romance!
My pet peeves- and it is recurring in all of Kdramas I have watched- are the kissing and hugging scenes where they show the close-up and the girl's lips tightly pressed together while being kissed...and the girl not hugging back when the moment calls for it - it ruins the story for me.
It is better not to show a kiss scene than bungle it like that. A kiss doesn't have to be shown close-up all the time.
It's okey to not have a kiss scene when unnecessary.
(The latest kiss scene was Moon Embracing the sun- when the king and Yeon finally reunited after all their suffering etc.. where was the passion in that kiss- totally useless scene, - what I was thinking watching that moment was," yeah Ha In is married and the king actor is way younger- so they can't really kiss passionately") . It would have been better to cut that scene altogether - they could just have embraced properly , if thelike cheating isn't it?

I hope the other writers and directors will learn from K2H how to execute a romantic scene. If you did not feel any tingling and did not swoon everytime Jae Ha and Hang AH were together - you are half dead LOL.

"The reason I quit Hollywood produced tv and movies is the in your face “sex”. I don’t need to see that. We want to see romance,"

That and how they play musical chairs so that almost every character falls in love/sleeps with almost every other character in the series. Pulzz...we, or at least I, want romance and fairy-tale unchanging love not promiscuity.

"My pet peeves- and it is recurring in all of Kdramas I have watched- are the kissing and hugging scenes where they show the close-up and the girl’s lips tightly pressed together while being kissed…and the girl not hugging back when the moment calls for it – it ruins the story for me."

You are so right again there, iluvk2hlsg.

There, unfortunately, both our beloved leads are guilty as charged too.

Have you watched BL, LSG's 2nd drama? That bridge kiss! Ah! The build-up was promising, the BGM at that scene is still etched in my mind. In fact, I replayed that scene so much bcos I LOVED how K.Will's "Love is Punishment" was used in that scene - the crescendo build-up, dramatic pause, then, the crescendo itself as LSG plants his lips on HHJ. Literally just plants his lips on hers, period. That's where the magic ends. The kiss left me cold. Who kisses like that?

As for HJW, much I love, love her, her kissing scenes are her weakest for me too. She's probably very shy as seen in the BTS of the fridge kiss and thus rather unresponsive. That's why I think these scenes in tk2h work out better for her and us, viewers becos she can ACT and EMOTE so the feelings comes through a lot better through her eyes, expressions and gestures.

Still hoping for a passionate kiss between her and LSG though. *sniggle, sniggle*

OK , just watched Epi 15&16 for d 88th time (random number chosen to hide scary real number). Now its time to nitpick .
*Beloved Queen Mommie - One.pair.of. Earrings.
Ok its Van Cleef but one pair for everyday & formal wear ? Please ! Even the simplest lady I know has a pair for daily & one for a more grand occasion! Come on , stylists-shhi , we love Queen Mom so can you give her something else to wear ? We notice you know .
*JaeHa - Our '10-Minute' Man.
" I'll give you 10 minutes !"says JaeHa to the UN officer at the border(epi 11) & again to Shikyung (epi 16).
Ten minutes is all anyone gets to run to the nearest phone to make desperate contact wt the North & with Club Mi . Really ?! haHAha. Since I'm not the one freaking out running to d phone like officer & SK, i think its funny & cute.
*HangHa - 'Curtain- down' eyes
Think I mentioned before but since i'm 'silently' shipping them , i'm wondering, is it HA or HJW who can't stand the loving stares & have to break d stare & look down.Always.
* SK - Musical 'Idol'
Wonder no more . He's an idol on the Musical circuits. No wonder he sings like a nightingale !
*HangAh- Honey thighs .
Just read that she has that nickname since showcasing her lovely thighs on her movie ,'Korea'.Ahh , Lucky Seunggi !Hugs toned arms & lie down on toned thighs!

That's a small detail that bugged me. I mean, com'on, she's the Queen Mother, for pete's sake. Her wardrobe in and out of the palace, at family dinner and royal engagement doesn't change. How's that possible? It's a royal engagement!!!

Btw, allow me to add here how much I love out OTP arriving in a white Merc convertible. Just so in character once again as opposed to stuffy limo or OTT horse-drawn carriage.

Back in ep5 (?), when HA came to Jeju to meet JH, she was told that she'll have 10 stylists to work on her wardrobe, hair and make-up. Surely there'll be more back at the palace, right? Where are they? Who are they working on? Looks like it was only JH. Now, HE always looked good, so no complains there.

Oh, here's a thought: perhaps they have all been fired! Was so excited for HA at the prospect of her being all dolled up and just slaying JH dead when he first lay his eyes on her. But, alas, no, no, no. Was so disappointed in that white blouse, fuschia mini AND clunky shoes AND flashy necklace. HA looked so much better in her hanbok and black heels, in my opinion, or even the NK uniform in the photo on JH's phone.

Then just when I thought they'd finally referred to Kate M's lookbook when she was dressed in that swoon-worthy blue lace number, she's back in a frumpy, shapeless blue shirt. For me, the excellent dream scene was almost spoilt by that outfit. With JH looking so hot, disheveled and all in that white shirt with buttons undone, sleeves rolled up and so, so fitting pants, HA just looked, looked, looked, sigh,..., there's no other word, dowdy next to him.

OK. Rant over.

0

@ babes:
Am I the only one who was distracted by how delicious Seung-gi was looking in his crisp white button-down shirt that it made it difficult for me to focus on the actual sequence?! I literally had to tear my eyes away from the torso area to focus on their faces (which isn't a difficult task given they're two gorgeous beings).

I couldn't agree more with you on that frumpy shirt. I do think the stylist wanted HJW to be comfortable...there may be a possible fight sequence b/w her and crazy assassin lady?

0

I certainly have issues as well with the styling for HA. Most of her "royal" outfits look pretty frumpy. Maybe they should have used the stylist from My Princess although admittedly, that may be a bit too "princess" for our HA. But the shoes in My Princess were to die for!

0

Once again, I loved your comments. I'm actually loving everyone's comments and will be sad for this reason and all the other obvious reasons when TK2H comes to an end. Sniffle, sniffle. But we shan't talk about that now...

Yes, I think we're all afraid to reveal our scary numbers. Although, with as comfortable as we seem to be here, it's safe to say just let it all out. There's always someone who's watched it more than you.

Re: Queen Mother's one pair of earrings. Wow, I must admit I didn't notice. But this comes from a girl who pretty much only wears a wedding ring, so that doesn't mean anything coming from me. Good catch.

Re: 10-minute man, JH. Yes, he puts a lot of weight into 10 minutes. But then, a lot can happen in 10 minutes. Recall "10 Minutes Ago" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. (I have found her! I have found him!)

Re: Curtain-down eyes. I have a sneaky feeling HJW doesn't have to act very hard when he stares lovingly at her. Natural reaction, I'd say, for HA and HJW.

SK has a gorgeous voice and I'd be the first one to buy his CD. He (JJS) IS a genius, vocally.

Re: HJW's honey thighs. The woman is an inspiration to me, and the next time I wish to talk myself out of exercising, I will look at the poster I will plaster on my wall of HJW and tell myself to buck up!

Hi I'm not sure if this is an appropriate place to talk about it but I was wondering what's the effect of a low rating like K2H?

I think everyone of us who watches K2H have faced that fact that K2H is not everyone's cup of tea and we basically ignored the rating and just enjoyed quality of the substance of the drama which for me means so much more than the rating itself. It's really the first kdrama that I watched that I feel it is of superior quality and excellent plot-line that is original and fresh.

But I was reading the article on the actress who plays the Queen Mother and she was saying how the rating usually put pressure on the casts and directors but luckily the K2H set is really lively thanks to Ha Ji Won and Lee Seung Gi. I just feel sorry for all the cast and staff to have to face such tough competitors and the pressure to garner high ratings. So I'm not sure how much effect does low rating play on K2H? But then again people watches it online and its not like they don't know anything about K2H so I'm thinking the effect is minimal.

Thoughts anyone?

@A - Yeh , as mtoh stated , its been pondered about in earlier post. Think you need to look at comments in epi 13 & 14 section. But to cut a long story short , we sorta concluded that the ratings , 1stly , compared to Em & RTP , aren't that way off. 2ndly , the North -South political situation may have cost some viewership to drop .3rdly , worldwide internet viewing & internet search for K2H ,far far surpass those other dramas mentioned ( double to triple ) . 4thly , judging from the outpouring of LOVE here for k2H , I think its safe to say , we've risen above it . Lets just concentrate on hearting & supporting the show from our end . I'm sure the cast & studio knows of the craze raging here for K2H & LSG's fans hv been phenomenal in their obvious support . All's Well !

@A: in addition to Jade Butterfly's great comments, sometimes there were kdramas writers/produces that change their plot in order to accommodate the viewers which most of the time make it worse. That's why kudos to TK2H writers/producers because it seems like they didn't change their styles since the beginning ~ the quality and story are still awesome and unique compared to other kdramas. Probably, other viewers can explain it better than me. :D

Sigh...ratings, ratings, ratings.

Used to be, before I discovered Dramabeans and was craving a good kdrama (and we all know how many bad ones there are out there), I would search wiki-drama for a drama's ratings to decide if I should watch it. Must qualify that I'm still rather new to kdrama, having only started with BL. That one had average of 40% in ratings and so I thought that was the way to go.

After this experience, I can safely throw that out of the window. From now on, JB and GF will be my guide. Hooray to money spent only on worthy boxsets! Anybody interested in LTM boxset?

I will give it a shot - and this is totally my personal opinion.

First of all, TK2H is in a dead heat with the other two competitors. I am no statistics guru at all. But even I could see the differences in TV ratings were probably in the margin of error. (EM seemed to pull away one or two weeks ago, but then it came down a bit.) So I don't think anyone can claim a big winner for this time slot. This is highly unusual in itself. And we have not included the downloading or live streaming data yet (where TK2H leads every week I heard).

Anyway, MBC sold out all the ad spots long ago. So no complaints from them.

As for actors and the behind-the-camera staff, sure, a good rating show adds to their immediate marketability and popularity. You can see the guy from the show before TK2H garners a lot of ads because of his hit. But I always like to cite this example: what ever happened to the baker king guy? Remember how hugely popular that show was? MGIG was not getting high ratings because of that show. But, due to the quality of MGIG and its legs (it has been picked up by many countries and got good receptions), I think LSG's career was not hurt by it at all. In fact, SMA's career got a revival from it (LSG was doing so well it really did not show as apparently as it did on SMA's).

Back to TK2H. I think there was pressure and a sense of urgency in earlier episodes as it seemed it could not hold its initial success. But, as viewers' support and critical acclaims pour in, people involved in the show realized it is indeed a very unique drama in a very unique competition environment. I sensed the mood has stabilized and right now they aim to make if not high ratings but then high quality drama. For actors, they all got a huge boost from this show. This time, LSG benefits a lot, as people, professional or not, view him differently now. He is no longer a singer who also can act, but a proper actor, period. He certainly has broadened his range, and, if you look at this site, got himself a whole new slew of fans.

(If you look at the most recent interview of the cast at the engagement filming, you can sense the jovial atmosphere and high spirits from everyone.)

In those earlier episodes, some viewers, like me, worried the pressure might get to the production team so that they dumbed down the show. Thank goodness that did not happen.

Oh dear, I meant this to be short and sweet! Anyway, for the short term, TK2H does not have the bragging right like those hit shows, but for the long term, and I say this one definitely has legs, I see only good things coming from it.

i feel the same way too jade.
the talent is there but till now i just didn't realize he could be this good.

and oh so well written annmichelle ;)
to me it just boggles my mind how important the ratings are in Korea but at the same time i understand the competition.
it's just not healthy to have that kind of mentality and also for the actors, crew and the writers.

i mean there should always be room for improvement but i feel sometimes that we get rob off for scenes or the actual written story just because half the time writers are bound to change it in order to cater to the viewers.

sure the viewers are precisely the main point right but this is where TK2H differs from most dramas. i loved that it stuck to what its original intended story and like you said annmichelle not for high ratings but for high quality drama.

as for the ratings, i don't even consider the other two as successful if they based it on terms of ratings only . i mean look it the difference of all three dramas .... just 2-3%. that just tells you how equally it is received by the viewers.

plus, the other two never got to the 19% ratings. so.

I don't care what others say TK2H you are the best!!!!

nicely put, AnnMichelle!

The ratings war is such a pain cause there are a lot of ways to measure the success of a currently airing drama other than the "dreaded" ratings figure. Even if TK2H might be in the 2nd or 3rd spot in the ratings, the difference among the three is not that much.

For instance, a lot of commenters here have been posting links on internet viewing ratings and most number of episode downloads and our K2H is leaving the competition in the dust.

The level of hysteria and cult following that K2H incites is incomparable to the other shows. Proof?
Exhibit A: the number of comments this drama has even on a non-finale episode is unheard of. 1500+ comments on episode 12 and looks like it's gonna be the same for this episode.
Exhibit B: videos of encouragement from international fans.
Exhibit C: numerous fan events for the staff and crew (complete with lunch and giveaways for the staff) & TK2H news/spoilers "internet stalking" by fans *raises both hands - guilty as charged* --> Cult following to a T.

As you so aptly put it, "[it may] not have the bragging rights like those hit shows [now] but for the long term . . . you only see good things coming from it". How true.

The true test for this show's staying power starts when the show ends. I feel it will still be talked about months after the last episode aired not only because of the actors' brilliant acting but because of the content and the originality of the plot lines sans kdrama cliches. I mean, who could ever forget Hang Ah kick ALL butts when she was saving Jae Ha during that NK stand-off in Episode 12? It's always damsel in distress in kdramas but not here. Power to the SHE, I say.

And if the actors are (or even if they're not) Hallyu stars before this show, they're freakin' Super Nova now!

HJW was already a superstar so we won't know the difference in her star power.

LSG was uber famous in SE Asia and this drama has catapulted him into an entirely different league in terms of acting but also with the int'l audience. *squeals* Bummed that we won't be seeing him soon since he'll be focusing on his singing career. About ratings:
Just a cursory glance at the comments sections of online blogs and google searches - K2H trounced the other dramas airing at the same time - EM and RP, I do watch those also but not as engaged as I am in K2H.
Remember that the TV ratings is only based on a survey of 1,000 or 2000 households who are tuned on the TV station at airing time. This is so obsolete- - I know that majority- over 50%- of viewers watch the drama online esp International viewers from 31 countries and counting!

What are the reporters doing? They should do these searches before they make claims which has higher ratings!!! Sometimes I don't believe the reporters, they are too lazy sometimes.. they just regurgitate what they heard from someone and not do their own research...Grrrrr. Or are they must be paid by Club M???

Where is Girlfriday and Koala - they make better writers.

BTW, I have sent a congratulatory mssg to LSG here-
http://leeseunggiworld.wordpress.com/2012/05/13/4722-info-lee-seung-gi-8th-debut-anniversary-8-yearsa-path-of-sincerity/
I hope you will do the same - it is LSG's 8th year in Hallyu.

And the passion that the fans have for this K2H drama is unmatched- I've seen the incredible fan-support for the entire crew of K2H- gifts of food etc... wow! I am impressed, I wanna be in the filming set too LOL...

What about us here chatting away like crazy.... that counts too right?

This will irk you but there was this lame reporter a couple of weeks back who had trashed Seung-gi's acting skills in this drama. She further went on and requested our boy to take a leaf out of UTW's book (Equator Man). :/

As soon as that article was out Seung-gi's fans went deservedly wild with rage and that article was taken down from the site! heh

So, there are a lot of haters out there who love to talk smack but whatchagonnado!! We can only love a drama (& those involved) for all the right reasons, ne?! =)

Yes, I remember hearing about that but by the time I went to check out the site, the article was taken down. Don't be getting us fans mad. There was no truth to it, just a cheap attempt at hits. Oh, we'll hit you alright.

I remember that very article..and even traced back the original article...

There was some chaos over the site that time, e-news who translated the article finally add 'this article isn't representing the thought of e-news or its affiliates' before the article taken down...

I read the article at nate&the comments, haha, fans don't agree with the reporter. What amused me is the comment in e-news, the best comment is: 'YA! KIM BONG GU!!'. I was LOLed at that time, e-news received some blow attack that day, through comment section & twitter mention, I guess that's why they finally take down the article -and... email address of the the original author had spread like fire, wondering how many love letters she got? ;) ?

My friends even said, airen isn't too famous because they never engaged in fanwars like other fanbase, but when time needed all of them showed off their canine and evil horn. LOL

Seung-gi had mentioned in TK2H press conference that they wouldn't pay heed to the ratings when working on this drama. That statement itself gives away the fact that right from the get go the entire team knew that this was a risky project. So, I applaud everybody to have the courage to not succumb to ratings-pressure.

The cast is being lauded for their work: I know JJS will prolly work in a movie next, Seung-gi's getting many love-calls from movie makers, and HJW has further cemented her position in the industry.

In addition, this drama has catapulted the males leads and 2nd female leads' popularity with the int'l audience.

So, ratings....ehh?!

I'm tracing back my own comments, it's in 74.3, though it mostly jokes :p

More over, I believe our @AnnMichelle explanation is more than enough :)
It's quality that we love, I also one of the viewers who worrying at the dropped rating, but thanks god, it's not a problem at all.

Now..the only wish is..please end this roller coaster safely, no City Hunter nor 49 days please!
Writer-nim, I beg you!!
For the sake of my sanity and heart!!
