Shin Mina becomes ghostly Arang

Now that the hero’s had his introduction, we turn to Arang and the Magistrate’s heroine, Shin Mina, pictured in these latest stills wearing hanbok for her role as the murdered Arang seeking justice for her death.

Shin Mina said, “I’m so excited and happy [to do this drama] that I find myself waiting for filming days. It’s because it’s my first drama in two years, but also because the script is so entertaining and the cast and staff are all working so hard; the more expectations grow for the drama, the more I want to do a really good job. I’m enjoying every moment on the set.”

She described her character, Arang, as a plucky, bright personality, in a departure from the typical ghost character. But I don’t expect this kind of plucky to hew to the usual heroine types, who are often Candys (poor but hardworking and optimistic): “She’s cynical and coarse and reckless, and strong-headed to boot, but not in a hateful way; she’s a lovable character. She doesn’t remember who she was in her life, and struggles to get by in this world, desperately wanting to know the reason for her death.” Ah, so the plot just got a hair more interesting—the ghost doesn’t know why she’s hanging around, so it’s not strictly revenge she wants, but the truth.

It also seems that the ghost doesn’t exactly get a free ride, despite her non-living status, because Shin describes Arang’s experience as “struggling to live in this world” and fighting with other creatures over the bits of food that get thrown on the ground as a ritual to scare away ghosts. (Hm, so a bit of a Dead Like Me setup, where the characters still have to fend for themselves even after they’re dead).

Co-star and drama hero Lee Jun-ki previously described his first impression of Shin Mina as “seeing a celebrity.” As in, feeling her star power. Shin said the same goes for Lee: “I felt the same thing when I first saw Lee Jun-ki. A strength of his is that he’s always upbeat and positive on set. Because he’s always positive and enthusiastic, I get wrapped up in the energy too and it makes things pleasant for the other staffers.”

Shin describes Arang as a “fantasy-melo sageuk seasoned with comic elements.” Ah, finally a description that makes sense; I’d been wondering how to reconcile Lee’s particular mention of the strong melodramatic elements with the descriptions of scenes and setups that sounded inherently comical. She elaborated, “On the whole the atmosphere feels bright and healthy, but when you follow each character’s circumstances and emotional throughlines, you’ll also feel a different type of fun and emotion. Arang is much more three-dimensional a character than the ones I’ve played before.”

Arang and the Magistrate premieres in July.

So her character would be very much like Miho in MGIAG?

From what she says I don't think Arang is quite as naive and carefree as Miho was... I'm curious to see Shin Mina play 'coarse'...

I've been missing MiHo these days and I am happy I can see her again..

although I know I'll NOT be seeing the same MiHo at least I can see Shin Min Ah again :)

Looking forward to seeing the two of them working together! I love Shin Min Ah and I've missed Lee Jun Ki!

I hope the drama doesn't break my heart with a love that cannot be though :( someone give a girl a second chance at love and life!

Me too. They're both so beautiful I fear watching them together will be like staring directly at the sun i.e. too much for human eyes to handle. Sigh.

Wow, I want to watch this drama. I think it'll be extremely exciting to watch how LJK and SM will do after 2 years.

Yey for the comedy! I thought it was going to be a melo thing. *phew*

Now I'm back on the Arang ship, trying to claw my way over to Jun Ki vs other fans.

(sidenote) Lee Dong Wook has had a decent comeback, and Jun Ki is getting one too! Jae Hee oppa, please find a good drama soon...

Is that a tattoo what I see on her neck?

So happy it's not a melo/angst fest, I was kind of worried about it because this is a drama I'm ~so~ going to follow -I mean, Shin Min-ah AND Lee Jun-ki in the same shot? How can I resist?

omg I didn't notice that! creepy...

I hope this is more melo and serious since Lee Jun Ki and Shin Min Ah are both very good acting that way. I didn't like MGIAG cuz it was overly silly and cute.

I wonder if this is related to her death... We'll see~

I have no problems with melo and serious stuff done right (as rjyuggy pointed out, like 'Tree with deep roots', which I LOVED), but I'm a bit afraid for it to go into makjang territory or something, that's why I'm a wit wary of this premise.

I did like MGiaG because of its fluffiness though, but if I were to choose, I think I'll rather prefer a TwDR tone (specially if it comes with superb acting, direction ~and~ writing. And Lee Jun-ki's mandatory post-army abs' scene).

Gosh the pretty for this drama is going to be dazzling. If the cinematography is good, it will be glorious.

As long as she doesn't do the scary Gumiho look. Eeeks.

Ooh, I'd love it if they did something like TOxA. Now that you mention it, I think that's what I'd been wanting from this show all along, even before I started watching the anime.

If Arang isn't good, I might just cry.

This drama just got a lot more interesting to me now. I like the twist that the ghost doesn't know how she died.

Also, as lovely as Shin Mina looks in those photos, there is some seriously bad hair Photoshopping going on.

These pictures are really lovely, with a portrait, painting-like feel. Shin Mina looks fierce in the first picture, and I love the "ghostly" hair! She's so beautiful, sweet and demure in the second picture.

I'm looking forward to Arang even more now, especially since Mina is not going to be a scary, vengeful ghost.

I also read from other sites that the production team/crew is the one from TBDAW, where I really loved the film-like production quality. So, it looks like we may have a feast for the eyes in store for us!

I agree. I love that they're going to make her somewhat vulnerable. What an interesting twist they're putting in with her not knowing why she's a ghost.

Ditto on the gorgeous eye food. I can't wait to see all of this put together. I'm really excited for this one!

She somehow looks matured. I don't really know how to explain.
If this will resemble a Chinese Ghost story? I love that movie and Leslie Cheung, may he rest in peace.

Shin Mina is smart, talented, and, incidentally, The Most Beautiful Woman in the Known Universe.

It's good to hear she has a character who isn't secondary to the male characters, as in several of her movies. In Gumiho she had a chance to cut loose and do so many different kinds of acting. You could do a portfolio just on the different faces she made in every episode, enjoying the job.

The article is a little wrong with the description as SMA, the heroine of the drama. She'll be 2nd lead bcuz she lost her memories. Thus, Magistrate Eun-oh will find the truth with his superb intelligence & fighting skills.
We can also judge it with the title. In "King & the Clown", the Clown "Gong-gil" is the lead role. So, also in "Arang & the Magistrate", the Magistrate "Eun-oh" is the 1st leading character.
Lee Jun-Ki is a very talented actor who is recognized for his great acting skills plus a true action star with no stuntman. He always choose the 1st leading role with the 3D characters which are rarely found in most other K-drama's simple male characters which are a little easy to portray. His infinite potentials can be amazingly discovered in the great productions with good stories like "King & the Clown", "Time between Dog & Wolf", "Iljimae: The Phantom Thief", etc. That's why he receives the ever-growing fame even after the military service and has so many everlasting fans who love and respect his talents & personalities.
I also love SMA in MGIAG, and she's a very beautiful actress in the industry. So, this is a great pairing! The script also sounds very interesting~! Can't wait my birthday, July 25th!! ^^

SMA is one of those few actresses who can act and be naturally cute (that whole fake cute act is sooo annoying).

She hasn't had the chance to play the naturally cute/charming role too often (the most recent one being Miho in MGIAG), but she does so in some of her earlier works (the film "Madeleine" w/ Jo In sung and the series "Punch" w/ Joo Jin mo).

I have hopes for this drama that even if the ending is sad, and the couple can't stay together, they will be together after death. After all, there's a king of heaven character in this drama, no? That means there's an after life where our characters can meet up again and be together for eternity. BRING THE MELO ON!

Mina is just telling the truth, not being considerate. ^^ Joongi's not like most other actors. As I've watched the filming sets of Iljimae, I know about him. When filming, he only concentrates on acting & gives perfect performances. During break, he always treats to all actors & staff of any age like his friends, not classify as males & females.
He's always bright & proactive, and jokes around sometimes that makes everyone at the set working happily. These are his unique charms that the actresses feel more comfortable & just become happy to see him.
