A Gentleman’s Dignity: Episode 14

What’s up Mr. Noble Idiocy? You’re that one drama ingredient writers like to use to spice up their semi-bland plot. I’m sorry to tell you that you’ve lost your kick and that your expiration date is long overdue. What’s that? You don’t care? Well okay. I guess I’ll dilute your bitter aftertaste with bottles of alcohol. Gah. Somebody. Drink with me.

EPISODE 14 RECAP

This opening has got to be one of my favorites. In 1995, Tae San, Yoon, and Do Jin cuddle together as they watch the last episode of “Sand Glass” aka the drama that catapulted Choi Min Soo and Go Hyun Jung into the Korean Hall of Fame. The guys hold back tears and soon break out singing the theme song of the drama as the credits roll.

Tae San turns off the TV and they begin imitating Choi Min Soo while sighing at how cool he is. Jung Rok crashes the drama party and whines that he can’t believe he missed the last episode. He begs his friends to tell him what happened at the end but they giggle devilishly and order him to watch the rerun if he’s so interested. Haha wow. Meanies.

Jung Rok shoots them the stink eye and replies that he’ll just have to ask his mommy. He whips out a cellphone that looks like it’s made of Legos and the other three ooh and ahh over Jung Rok’s new toy.

Tae San remarks that it’d be nicer if the phone was a little slimmer and Jung Rok scoffs that the phone might as well have a touch screen too. The men all utter a huge “pshaw” and Yoon jokes that TVs might as well hang on walls and they should have air conditioning blast from the ceiling. Maybe they’ll pay to drink water soon too.

F44 dissolves into laughter but a voiceover from Do Jin laments that he and his friends were too short-sighted to realize those technological developments could actually happen. They could have even become Korean versions of Steve Jobs. Lol.

Yi Soo peeks into Betty and wonders where Do Jin went as he sidles up next to her. She jumps back in surprise and he hands her a cup of coffee while asking what she ate for lunch. He calls her “my lover” and she hides a smile before reminding Do Jin that she only has twenty minutes before she has to head back to class.

He responds that she’s not pretty enough to spend the entire twenty minutes with him and teases her further when her face crinkles in annoyance. He puts his hand over her face to cover it from the sun and flashes her a cheeky wink.

Do Jin informs her that he and his friends are sending Colin back to Japan and she cautiously asks if it’s because Eun Hee might worry. Do Jin shakes his head no; he’s doing it because Yi Soo seems worried about Colin’s presence. They agree to meet later for dinner and she sees him off.

After Colin drops the bomb that one of F44 is his father, Jung Rok immediately wonders if it’s him. HAHA. “Why do I always think it’s me when I hear something like this?” Bwaha. Tae San and Jung Rok argue about who the father is on the way back to Do Jin’s apartment.

The men begin to interrogate Colin on who he thinks his father is and why he’s looking for him now. We learn that Colin’s current father is not Korean but raised Colin like his own biological son. Colin explains that he realized he was really good-looking one day and now wants to know the man who gave him such great genes.

Jung Rok sighs that it must be him (hah) but Tae San immediately shushes him. Do Jin commands Colin to take out his passport, which reveals that Colin was born in 1994, not 1995. Huh?

After a moment’s pause, Do Jin says that he thinks he might be Colin’s father. ::bashes head against desk:: I guess we’re really going there. His friends and Colin stare at him in shock. Jung Rok breaks through the thick tension first by admitting that he met Eun Hee a couple of weeks before and she had asked him to contact her if Colin ever showed up.

Tae San starts to scold Jung Rok for not saying anything earlier but Do Jin interrupts to ask for some private time with Colin. The three men get kicked out and Do Jin hands his phone to Colin; put in Eun Hee’s phone number. He leaves with his shoulders slumped as the other F44 members look after him worriedly.

Yi Soo waits for Do Jin outside her house and calls him continually. He observes her from behind the corner and lets his phone ring in his hand. She soon huffs and puffs back into her house and waits a bit for his call. Meanwhile Do Jin sits in Betty until Yi Soo’s bedroom lights turn off. He goes back home to brood and then calls Eun Hee after some hesitation.

Jung Rok, Tae San, and Yoon discuss the night’s events and Jung Rok wonders if Do Jin really is Colin’s father. Tae San responds that nothing has been proven yet; they still don’t know who Eun Hee liked the best out of all four of them. Sigh. You guys are still fighting about this?

Level-headed Yoon orders Jung Rok to get some drinks and then turns to Tae San to talk about the matter more seriously. He comments that Do Jin would only say he was the father if he really thought he was and Tae San replies that Eun Hee must have had a hard time raising Colin by herself.

Yoon plays devil’s advocate and questions Tae San on what he would have done if a girl had said she was pregnant with his child back when he was in his 20s. Tae San answers that he would have taken immediate responsibility but Yoon remains slightly unconvinced. It’s easy to say that now because they’re in their forties.

Yi Soo leaves multiple messages on Do Jin’s voicemail but the only call that she receives is from Me Ahri, who informs her that Min Sook wants to meet with Yi Soo.

Me Ahri, Se Ra, and Yi Soo meet Min Sook at a restaurant, where Min Sook reveals that Colin is the son of one of F44. The women gape at her in surprise but Min Sook pushes forward; she doesn’t know who the father is but she wanted to inform them of this crazy situation.

She goes on to say that one of them will be hurt because of this revelation. The other women try to figure out who the father could be while Yi Soo remains quiet. Me Ahri and Se Ra begin to fight over whether or not Colin is Tae San’s or Yoon’s child. Soon the two then look to Yi Soo, who readily defends Do Jin by saying Colin doesn’t look like Do Jin at all.

Min Sook blows a figurative whistle and reminds everyone that there’s a 25% chance that any one of F44 could be Colin’s father. Se Ra asks if Min Sook could understand Jung Rok if he turned out to be Colin’s father and Min Sook responds that she’s not sure. They need to confirm who the father is first before panicking.

At Se Ra’s house, Me Ahri complains that she can’t raise a 17-year-old child. She’s only 24! Se Ra marvels at Me Ahri’s train of thought. It’s “How will I raise Colin?”, not “I’m going to forget Yoon”? Me Ahri asks why Se Ra cares about whether or not Tae San is the father; aren’t they separated? Yi Soo sits in a haze during the entire conversation.

Do Jin listens to Yi Soo’s messages but can’t bring himself to contact her. She later stops by outside his apartment only to turn away in fear before ringing his doorbell.

The next day, Do Jin invites Colin over to have lunch and asks about his current father. Colin answers that he’s a pilot and Do Jin nods in response. He informs Colin that Eun Hee will fly in today and that he will have a conversation with her to figure out this situation.

A couple hours later, Do Jin sits across from Eun Hee who compliments Do Jin on how well he’s aging. He ignores the small talk and gets straight to the point: what happened? She disappeared without warning and made a huge decision by herself. Furthermore, she turned him into a fool. She should have at least told him the truth.

Eun Hee responds that she ran away because she was scared. She wasn’t planning on having the child but changed her mind suddenly. He angrily snaps that she should have told him that she was planning to have the baby but she quickly responds with a question of her own. Would he have wanted the baby at that time?

She apologizes continually and makes the excuse that she was young and in love. WHAT. DFKJGDJFDLJ…wheww. Okay. Save it for later. She tells him that she doesn’t want anything from him and that nothing has changed. Uh, except everything has changed. Blargh. Do Jin stands up and commands her to stay in Korea for the time being while handing her the address of the residence hotel.

Eun Hee makes her way to where Colin is staying and she yells at him for acting so rashly. He remarks that he recognized Do Jin as his father right away. She pauses momentarily but then pulls out the guilt card; does Colin not know how much she loves his current father? He nods and she snaps that Colin is betraying his father by acting so immaturely.

Colin slowly replies that he knows it’s betrayal but he was just so curious. He questions if Eun Hee ever regretted keeping him and she gives an affirmative answer; she regrets it today.

Do Jin arrives at his apartment to find his friends waiting anxiously for him. He sighs that Eun Hee confirmed that Colin is his son and the other three give him looks of pity/helplessness/sadness. Yoon asks what he wants them to do for him whether it be give laughter or consolation. Do Jin just replies that he wants to speak to Yi Soo first.

Jung Rok cautiously comments that the four ladies already met and know about the general situation, but they don’t know who the father is yet. Just then, everyone’s phones start ringing except for Do Jin’s. Do Jin urges the other three to pick up the calls and reassure their ladies that he’s the father.

Yoon meets with Me Ahri who jumps to the conclusion that Colin is his son. She reassures him that she’ll raise Colin well and he can only facepalm in return. Jung Rok chases her out of the bar by threatening to call Tae San and then turns to Yoon to give him some advice; Yoon won’t ever find another woman who is willing to raise another person’s son. He might as well win ten lottery tickets.

Jung Rok then rushes home to convince Min Sook that Colin is not his son. He gives her three reasons: Colin is good-looking, has a small face, and has double eyelids. She nods in agreement. Misunderstanding cleared. Teehee.

She also reasons that Jung Rok would have hid Colin away if he really was his son and he reluctantly says that she’s right. She slips in that he can stay for dinner and Jung Rok’s eyes light up. He gives her his best puppy dog face and inquiries whether he can sleep at home or leave after dinner.

He receives permission to stay after dinner and he squeals with joy. He skips down the hall to change and she quietly comments “Would you have matured if we had a child?” Aw. Her thoughts are interrupted when Jung Rok bounds up to her with Se Ra’s car key. He wonders if it’s his but she demands that he put the key back. Typical Jung Rok doesn’t listen and then later realizes that the key is to Se Ra’s car.

At the same time, Tae San and Se Ra have tea at a cafe and she presses him to reveal who Colin’s father is. She tells him that she still wants to be by his side if he’s in trouble…out of friendship. He calls her a coward, which she sadly acknowledges as correct. She responds that she still misses him but he coolly answers that he wants to separate cleanly; he will never understand men who stay friends with their exes. He exits and she cries.

Me Ahri shows a picture of Eun Hee and the men to Yi Soo and Yi Soo remarks that Eun Hee is quite pretty. Me Ahri wonders if Yi Soo has heard anything from Do Jin yet. Yi Soo gives her a cryptic answer. “I can’t tell when happiness is coming, but I can predict when sadness approaches.”

Her phone rings at that exact moment and she steels herself before answering it. Do Jin asks if he could come over to talk but she suggests that she head his way instead; waiting for him to call has been hellish enough. I’m going to cry.

She drives nervously to Do Jin’s office yet feigns a calm demeanor when she sees him. She gently chides him for failing to contact her and he apologizes. He then prepares her for a more serious conversation by apologizing for what he will say next.

Do Jin: I’m going to cancel my words about living together. I also take back the promise that I’ll make you happy. I won’t be able to fulfill your request that I never leave you before you leave me either. I’m a horrible bastard. Please try to forget about me.

Yi Soo asks the billion dollar question: is Colin his son? He whispers “yes” and her mouth drops open in shock. He continues, “It’s not that I don’t have the confidence to love one woman forever. It’s that I don’t have the right. I’m being punished for making others cry and being so conceited during my lifetime.”

She asks him again and again if Colin is his son and he answers that all he can say is that she forget about him and that he hopes she meets a good man. Oh gosh. I need another drink.

She storms out but is prevented from leaving by the building’s security guard. The guard refuses to give her the car keys under Do Jin’s orders. Alright, first of all, why does the security guard have your keys? Second, please stop throwing a temper tantrum. Take the bus! A taxi!

Damn it. Nobody listens to me. Yi Soo continues to whine and cry…and then allows herself to be driven home by Do Jin. Where’s the dislike button. When she arrives home, she curses at him and sarcastically wonders if he doesn’t have another hidden child.

She runs inside and sinks to the floor of her room while sobbing uncontrollably. Do Jin likewise lets manly tears trickle down his face in his apartment. Nope. You don’t get to cry! You don’t even HAVE TO CRY. ::rage::

The next morning, Sung Jae’s mother screeches her way into the school and slaps Dong Hyub for bullying her precious son. Damn woman! What is wrong with you. Yi Soo pleads with her to calm down and that they should talk outside. Sung Jae and some other teachers soon drag the woman out of the classroom and Dong Hyub leaves before Yi Soo can speak with him.

That night, Yi Soo drinks beer alone in the baseball field and is soon joined by Tae San. He asks if she’s okay and she replies that she’s not. She complains that Do Jin didn’t give her time to think or ask what she wanted. He just dumped her without a proper explanation.

Tae replies that he would have done the same thing if Colin had been his son. He comments, “Giving someone time to think is asking that person to stay with you. He probably thought that he didn’t deserve to ask you to stay.”

She answers that she might have been able to understand him if she had been given some time; how can you go straight to home base justifiably without first going to the other bases? Tae San replies that Do Jin wants to protect Yi Soo…from the 22-year-old version of himself. What? That makes no sense at all. That’s just lazy ass writing. What. WHAT.

Jung Rok informs Tae San that Se Ra’s car is with Min Sook as collateral for a loan, which Min Sook confirms when Tae San questions her directly. Min Sook remarks that Se Ra put down her pride to request money from her; maybe Tae San should pretend not to know about Se Ra’s debts for now.

He replies that he needs to keep his pride first and offers to repay Min Sook. ::groan:: What is it with these men and thinking that they know what’s best for someone else? Is this why you and Do Jin are friends?

Do Jin and Colin have another lunch meeting where Colin assures Do Jin that he needn’t try so hard. Do Jin responds that he can only think of two things at the moment. He has a son and he lost someone important. Colin asks for a piece of Do Jin’s hair and then heads to Yoon’s office to request a DNA test. Eh? Do you usually go to a lawyer to do that?

Yoon hands Colin the results of the DNA test that he submitted secretly. Colin and Do Jin have a 99.999% that they’re related. Okay. That’s GREAT. Now there’s no chance for a twist in the plot. Everyone might as well go around banging pots and pans while singing “Do Jin is Colin’s father” in the streets. WE GET IT.

Yi Soo’s co-worker informs Yi Soo that Sung Jae’s mother is going to sue the school (OMFG REALLY?! UGH) which causes Yi Soo to run over to Yoon’s office for a consultation. She runs into Do Jin and Eun Hee there and the temperature in the hallway drops to below zero.

Yi Soo lets out a loud sound of disbelief and tries to stalk out but is blocked by Do Jin. Oh hell to the no bro. Don’t you dare introduce Eun Hee to her. Or okay. Just introduce your ex-girlfriend from twenty years ago to your most recent was-your-lover-until-a-day-ago ex-girlfriend. Right. ’cause that makes sense. The two women stare at each other.

Comments/Incoming rant:

I admit that I avoided writing this recap because the episode was painful to watch. It made me angry. Sigh. After three short episodes of happiness, our main couple has been tearfully splintered apart. They’ve only been dating for a short period of time too. I’m not sure about everyone else but I had a series of reactions when Do Jin dropped the bomb that he was the father.

Initially, I went “Aha! Yup I totes called it” like a snobby know-it-all and then I got all disappointed that I was “right” because predictability kinda sucks. I didn’t want Colin to be the son of any of the other F44 but I think I would be way more interested if we were thrown a curve ball.

The DNA test is concrete proof that colin is Do Jin’s son so we can’t get around the problem. I never cared about Colin to begin with and now he’s slowly working his way into the “get the hell outta here” category. Sorry CN Blue fans.

Half of my brain “understands” why a secret son is a huge hurdle for a couple. Do Jin has fallen from A+ groom status to a D and Yi Soo feels a huge amount of betrayal. I get the whole noble idiocy thing too; Do Jin doesn’t feel like he deserves Yi Soo anymore, so he pushes her away. Tae San’s conversation with Yi Soo is supposed to present Do Jin’s way of thinking to the audience, but I don’t think it’s done very well. I mean seriously…he’s protecting her from his 22-year-old self? PFT okay.

On the other hand, why CAN’T the two be together? It’s not like Eun Hee wants Do Jin back. Colin is almost eighteen and he doesn’t seem like he’s obsessed with having his biological father in his life. We’re told that Eun Hee has a husband who loves Colin too. So where’s the dramatic tension? Do Jin may feel obligated to become a part of Colin’s life but Eun Hee and Colin don’t “need” him either. If anything, it seems like they just want to maintain a civil relationship.

If Eun Hee was all cray cray about having Do Jin back in her life, there would be an actual plot. I would hate Eun Hee with all of my black heart, which would at least equal some kind of emotional investment. We’re at this really strange middle ground between “It’s not that big of a deal” and “Oh shit it’s a big deal.” In other words, I don’t care. I’m just tolerating the problem because we have six more episodes to fill.

Alright fine. Let’s try to think about this from a different perspective. Maybe this problem is meant to force Do Jin to re-evaluate his life. Maybe it’ll force him to “mature”…whatever that means. He’s a selfish character and this noble idiocy is an act of unselfishness, right? Eh. Kind of. He doesn’t get to keep what he wants but he does maintain his pride by leaving Yi Soo first. Tae San argues that asking Yi Soo what she thought about the situation is the same as asking for her to be by his side. Only it’s not.

Yi Soo had the right to make the decision to be with Do Jin or not. She should have been able to break up with him first if she wanted. Where does he get off acting like he deserves to make decisions for other people when he can barely manage himself? He pretends that he knows what’s best for his woman when he actually doesn’t.

Similarly, Tae San chooses to ignore Se Ra’s wishes and repays Min Sook to preserve his own pride. You know what that means? You place your own pride above what your woman wants. Also, you don’t NEED to protect them. They’re grown women who are capable of taking care of themselves. Or at least, that’s what I thought we’re supposed to believe.

Also. Eun Hee. What the fuck. Apologies for the profanity but oh my freaking frack. I sympathize with her younger self because it would have been scary to deal with an unplanned pregnancy but she still should have told Do Jin. Why should he be punished for what she did without his knowledge?

Granted, he may have run away after telling her to erase the baby but he also could have stepped up and done the “right” thing. She could have informed him after the baby was born as well, unless she just didn’t want Do Jin in Colin’s life at all. But why? He didn’t hurt her all those years ago; she victimized herself without proper reason.

We know this drama works best when it’s light and fluffy. It’s just disheartening because there are so many topics that are rich with potential. Why, for example, cast Dong Hyub with a capable actor when all he’s doing is serving as filler? He should be utilized more.

Also, where is Me Ahri’s growth? Will she be stuck in whiny cry-baby mode her entire life? What about Jung Rok and Min Sook’s marriage? Will he continue to sneak around as she grows into a bitter old woman? What happened to Do Jin’s short-term memory loss? Is that going to make a convenient re-appearance soon to piss me off even more?

I appreciate that this drama is entertaining. But why pretend that you can create something more meaningful when you can’t? Honestly, maybe the writer should have just gotten rid of Eun Hee altogether, have Colin be Jung Rok’s hidden son, and then let the Yi Soo/Do Jin and Tae San/Se Ra couples get married and deal with marital problems.

Or maybe include a credible love rival for Yi Soo instead of wasting time on her crush on Tae San. I don’t know. There are a lot of possibilities that were available but I guess we’re stuck now. ::shakes fist at sky while waiting for Saturday::

I just don't get it.

Why is this child such an issue? Do Jin has been a playboy for many years so the landscape could be littered with his carelessness. Is it a bad thing only when there is evidence?

The boy has grown up healthy and happy, so no one seems to have been harmed.

Can someone explain the Korean views around this topic? Is there just something so dastardly about having a child out of wedlock? I am assuming the Korean audience gets it, else there wouldn't be a story like this.

I understand why people are angry... but I can see why Do Jin and Tae San are acting the way they are. As annoying as it is, I think it's EXACTLY what Korean men would do. Maybe as Americans we don't understand why having a secret son is a big deal or why a man continues to protect his pride while ignoring the wishes of his significant other. But after watching a lot of dramas and being Korean myself, I just think that's part of the Korean culture. And I know that's a HUGE over generalization, but I honestly don't think it's a bad thing. I just think the way Koreans think/react is different from Americans and/or other cultures. Blood relations/family history/ birth right and etc. are all extremely important in Korean culture. So yeah, it's a huge deal that Do Jin has a secret son. And yes, Eun Hee is annoying and stupid but her son made this huge mess without her consent or knowledge. And she is not making anyone suffer, it takes two to tango. It's not like she got pregnant on her own.

And yes, I think Do Jin was being really selfish and unfair when he ended things with Yi Soo... but honestly he made the decision that she would have wanted to make. I feel like he did that, knowing that if they stayed together she might end up resenting him in some way in the future.

That being said, I think the writers are dragging out a couple things and the plots are suffering. I just want all the couples to be happy!

Eun Hee, not Colin, made this huge mess by not telling her son who his father was or mistakenly thinking she could go through her entire life without having to deal with the situation. If Colin were waiting for her consent to find his father, he would have to wait his whole life. True, Eun Hee didn't get pregnant on her own, but if the woman doesn't tell the man she's pregnant and disappears, how exactly is he suppose to know?

That's the point, he's not supposed to know. But that's Korea. I know it's trying to change but if a women is pregnant out of wedlock, she has to

A) abort it, to protect her future.

B) raise it on her own and accept the consequences.

She can't ruin the man's future by hampering him with a child.

So that was what she was thinking when she was 20. She made that choice. She probably didn't think that Colin would never know.. It's usually hidden from a lot of kids in Korea and they never find out.

It's a sucky situation all around. All I'm saying is I don't think it's Colin's fault. If Eun Hee wanted to hide who Colin's father was, then she shouldn't have given Colin a picture of the F44 and said one of these guys is your father...Basically, Eun Hee GAVE Colin a picture of Do Jin, but Colin wasn't suppose to figure it out?! >Giant facepalm< That does not sound like a woman trying to keep a secret... (This is a problem of inconsistent, err bad, writing).

I'm dumping on Eun Hee, but Do Jin is no saint either. I just think since she decided to keep the child, that she should have said something to Do Jin before the kid was 18yrs old... just my take on things.

Ok, my question with the whole paternity test is this: did the report actually say Do Jin's name? Because I got a distinct vibe that there was more there than Yoon was saying. Namely, that Yoon is the father, which totally threw me for a loop, because I had decided forever ago it would be Do Jin. Also, it would explain his relative silence when Jung Rok and Tae San were so adamantly trying to weasel their way into and out of a past relationship with Eun Hee. It would also explain Yoon's denial if Eun Hee had cheated on Do Jin with Yoon—something he REALLY wouldn't want Do Jin to find out about now.

I don't get the whole life's-over-because-I-have-a-child thing either. I know there are major cultural implications there, but Colin is almost an adult, and it's not like Do Jin was hiding him/being a dead-beat dad all these years. He seems pretty ready to step up to the plate now that he knows, but Yi Soo should ultimately be able to make the decision whether she wants to try to stick things out.

I, too, was really mad at Tae San for trying to fix all Se Ra's problems. I liked him at first, and didn't really care for her, but everything has been flipped for me. She is a strong independent woman, and wants to deal with her debts and other problems on her own. It's not that she's unwilling to ask for help—she went to Min Sook, after all—it's that she finds it completely inappropriate to get a loan form her (ex) boyfriend. I totally agree. Let her solve things her own way. And IF you want to help her out, OFFER your help. Don't just go behind her back trying to be a fairy godmother. JERK.

This was the first episode where Jung Rok was my favorite of F44. His puppy-dog eyes when he asked "just eating, or can I sleep here, too?" were soo great. So was his skip. Maybe the cheating d-bag will have some major character growth, after all.

Thanks for letting me rant/rave.

I agree with all the above comments about how the whole part related to Colin was completely unnecessary and is just dumb. I also agree whole-heartedly with orangy's rant on noble idiocy and why it's such a big deal when colin and eun-hee have a family..
anyway i hate the tae-san & se-ra couple they're so boring..they should have less screen-time. se-ra's okay when she's with the other women and tae-san's okay with the 3 guys but together they exert negative energy -_-
alot of people hate me ahri's character for being annoying and whiny but I actually find her cute and light. i think she has a very likeable quality. plus her adoration of yoon is pretty admirable :)

Hey Orangy!

Thanks so much for the recap despite your frustration (and mine and just about everyone else that has a functioning brain UNLIKE SOME OF OUR LEADS... ahem cough cough Tae Sun, Jung Rok, Do Jin)

honestly your recap made this shoddy episode waaay more awesome, i was chuckling

honestly don't know what writer-nim is thinking this has to be the most depressing frustrating noble idiocy episode ever!

firstly, colin never appeared in the first 12 episodes for more a minute or two and suddenly BAM he's a plot mover, WTF?

not to mention like you said there are so many loose ends and questions that have never been answered
granted we still have 6 episodes but it doesn't look like these will be resolved any time soon

tsk, tsk

Exactly. What's the big freaking deal?

Sure, the revelation is life-changing for Do-jin, but how does it really impact his relationship with Yi-soo?

It's not like Eun-hee is begging Do-jin to "take responsibility" and marry her. It's not like Colin is a baby or a child who will require a huge amount of time investment on Do-jin's part to take care of and raise.

I get it if Yi-soo would've been initially shocked and hurt -- that's a normal reaction, especially from someone portrayed as a naive, virginal, idealistic. If she couldn't accept it and had broken up with him, that would've been understandable too.

But Do-jin's noble idiocy makes no sense whatsoever. Such lazy, ridiculous, manufactured and cliched writing.

Do-jin, no one is asking you to sacrifice the love of your life for at the altar of unplanned parenthood. What the hell for? And please stop acting that the existence of your son is some cross to bear. You're lucky he's already grown and doesn't seem particularly angsty about his paternity.

If the drama is really going there, a better conflict would've been Do-jin trying to get to know his adult son and learning how to become a father (a la Mark Ruffalo in The Kids are All Right) while juggling a new romance, with Yi-soo figuring out where she fits in in his new set of priorities.

in contrast to many on there, I appreciated this episode quite a lot. I was getting bored with the show as soon as Do Jin and Yi Soo got together, because there was absolutely no development anymore. Do Jin needed a kick in the butt, desperately - as does Yi Soo. Both characters need to go through some catharsis before they can become happy together - both have deep running issues with pride/trust. with 6 episodes to go, it seems likely the show will deliver nicely in the end and will make their (highly likely) happiness much more believable.

I also understand Do Jin's reaction (though I'm far from being Korean :). If you truly love somebody - and I've always believed that he loves Yi Soo, though probably doesn't know how - you want to protect them at all cost. pushing them away from you, when something really bad comes your way (and is your fault) is something I've observed happening in real life many times. It is definitely not smart and it is also, in some ways, selfish, but it is not done because someone is a bad person; the opposite is true.

Huh. I'd say the opposite is true. In my observations, when bad stuff happens people tend to cling even tighter to the few good things in their life, especially someone they deeply love.

On the other hand, if the relationship is tenuous, the first bad thing that comes along will pull it apart. When I see what DJ did, and YS's reaction, it seems to me they can't really love each other that much - because what society will say, or what hoops they may have to jump through, or what uncomfortable conversations they will have to weather, seem to have top priority here.

And that really annoys me, because for about the thousandth time I am thinking, 'what on earth is this writer trying to say?'

I've been finding these recaps very enjoyable but haven't watched the show yet. From this episode I think it's probably going to be because I'm simply not going to get the conflict. Even in Victorian Britain an illegitimate child from nearly 2 decades before wasn't this much of a hurdle - that this is considered a sufficiently major conflict to create the final run-in to the end and justify noble idiocy seems excessively baffling and is likely why this type of show would have a pretty hard cross-over to somewhere like the UK.

Is this seriously, in modern South Korea, such a major issue or is this just a high class soap, governed by TV rules that don't apply to movies, with a strictly limited takes on modern mores (which seems somewhat in conflict with the attitudes of the randy leads!). I get the stuff about marriage arrangements and issues over 2nd marriages but still? I mean, I found it amusing when it comes up in Ozu's films back in the 40s and 50s and Setsuko Hara is expressing distaste for an uncle being dirty for getting remarried :)

Orangy911 - I have to agree with you more than I'd like to admit here... *sighs*

I had to keep all the pencils locked up because I seriously wanted to stab someone with it for the entire episode. Like... Are you KIDDING me? *facepalm* The whole who's Colin's daddy had been obvious, but, I was REALLY hoping that I was wrong. I don't enjoy being right because it'll just prove the predictability of Korean dramas and that saddens me a wee bit. It was like... Hmm, okay, I knew that - moving on? And the DNA test... Seriously? *death* Do you REALLY need to confirm it? Yeah yeah, the whole crap twist, but, look at the F44 and then Colin - it's like so obvious if you didn't notice it from the beginning who's the Colin's daddy, you might have been on something.

I don't really pity/care about Tae San and Se Ra, there, I've said it. He's an idiot who wasted his life for her and she's a bitch for keeping him around when she knows she doesn't want to marry him. I mean, I honestly don't mind the whole 'let's live together and not get married', it's like so common these days I'm indifferent. But, 'let's just play around and say we're in love while I pursue my dreams and leave you hanging' is just -- WTF?! I thought the villainous second female lead was annoying, but this is just - let's just say she's lucky that I have locked away my pencils.

And I can't follow Min Sook and Jung Rok... But, the reasoning did made me laugh a bit and when Min Sook agreed, I died. Is it supposed to be funny? I don't know, I just feel like laughing then...

As for Me Ahri and Yoon... The jury is still out for me. I don't know whether I like or hate them together. For one, she could be good (kind of) for Yoon as her youth would inject a little bit life into him. And then when I thought about it a bit more -- maybe I think I'd like to see it after all. And when she confessed she would 'raise' Colin - I just had to raise my eyebrows and thought; how much raising are you planning to do? The boy is like 17! I love that bit of innocence her and her ability to accept possibility albeit the fact the never bothered to confirm it. To be honest, I don't mind if she never grows up and remain just as childish and innocent as she is.

Se Ra stated from the very beginning that she didn't want to get married, and I can understand why. If she doesn't feel like she's ready for the pressures of marriage, I don't see why she should feel compelled to go through with it. Tae San is the idiot for assuming she'd come around and making all these assumptions about how she still isn't done "playing".

Then she shouldn't have begin or agree to go out with him. I don't understand it because if it was me, I would never even give a drop of hope to things if I am that certain, which I am. When it comes to marriage and not wanting to be tied down, I am on that boat. The layout is easy, don't date - don't be serious. Serious means possibility of marriage. If you're not up for it, you're just hurting the other party and it's downright selfish to pull someone along, worse than telling them no from the get-go.

I guess that's what many of the characters in this drama are doing or have done so far. Thinking about what's good for the other party or what they think the other parties' reaction might be to a certain dilemma and then acting according to their estimations, and all the while ignoring the other parties wishes and decisions completely!!!!
Do Jin has not matured and inkling if u ask me. What he does is pure selfishness and the exact same think Eun Hee did to him 18 years ago. He makes the decision for Yi Soo to prevent her from making the decision. Although when Eun Hee did that she was 20something and Do Jin is old enough to acknowledge the other persons right. Funny how he asks Eun Hee why she didn't give him the choice while he does the exact same thing!
It's the exact thing Tae San's doing, ignoring his girlfriends pride and wishes to preserve his own.
It's even what Colin did. without thinking the slightest bit about the results of his actions, he barged into everybody's life. Though him, I can understand. He's still young and careless but the others, not so much.
It's just the same as Yi Soo said the previous episode that when someone those something FOR somebody else it just doesn't make sense to the other party and only shows one loves the other less. U get to make a decision FOR them when the right thing to do is make a decision with them. That's what me thinks.

That's the whole point of the show.

FLAWED characters. Often when a person does something they think will protect another, it;s wrong and actually hurts the person more.

That fact that there are 150 comments here and people are outraged means the show is driving this point home.

This is not a lovey-dovey romantic show with happy endings. This is a life lesson.

Why can't Me Ahri love Yoon? Why can't Do Jin love Yi Soo? Why can't Tan San admit he's paying his gfs debt. Why doesn't Min Sook leave her stupid husband?

Why Why Why?

I know that people and thus characters are flawed and that the stories dance around these flaws. My point was how is it that every other character in this show has the same flaw??!!!!!! is it epidemic?!!!!
and the fact that people are outraged in great portions is related to the fact that they are tired of repeated plots. First yoon attempts noble idiocy. Then Do Jin. Then ...? Is it a whose next game?! Granted different people make the same or similar mistakes. However in a drama its better not to show the same problem happening to every person every other episode. Don't know about others but in times like this, my reaction would be throwing my fist in the air and asking " why are u wasting it when u could have been so sooooooo great show?! sigh

I don't have the problem with the character's flaw, but the way it is built and delivered of the character, which is doesn't make any sense or seems contradictory. Like DJ is a modern man who has so casual sex relationships with women, living together with girlfriend ('cause he won't get tied in marriage?), is ready to lie for his friend's adultery, and suddenly... BHAM! He goes all traditional about taking responsibility for his son , who is already an adult (born in 94 means 18 y.o.) and has his own mature way and doesn't hold a grudge against him and asks him to be a good father 'cause he already has a good (step) father, and whose mother doesn't hold a grudge against him, either, and is happily married and so far doesn't have cancer ....
I thought he'll say let bygones be bygones, instead of getting mopey and cutting off Yi Soo without a reasonable reason. Does he think he isn't good enough for Yi Soo because he has tainted past? Well, it's too late for that isn't it, writer-nim?
And I just talk about DJ character ... #sigh#

Would you rather that Do Jin have casual relationships, date Yi Soo and then when the Colin-news hits, he doesn't allow Yi Soo to dump him and continues to stalk her? Cause this does happen, men try to get the best of both worlds and torture all their women.

I think the drama is trying to tell that Do Jin was a jerk and by meeting and falling in love with Yi Soo, he's going to change, or at least realize that he needs to change into a serious relationship. But when the Colin-News hits he doesn't know how to react, Yi Soo is such a nice person, so he'll just push her away because he's can't get out of his own way (his jerky past)

But Yi Soo's got him by the nuts in episode 15 (figuratively) and it's such torture for him now. I love it :)

Wow, I've been waiting for this recap to compare what my frustrations were with you all... First off, this episode was one of the most maddening, almost comparable with the worst dramas I've ever watched: Don't Hesitate...

Anyway, I have so many "what the crap" moments as I watched this episode and even the first scene wasn't enough to calm me down because I knew where the episode was going -- to the pits. Sure, on a good day, the Steve Jobs scene would've made me choke in laughter but I kept giving my screen the side-eye because the comic relief came too early for me. They should've saved it for after the mess created by the show's lazy writers.

A sign of lazy writing:
Saying that Colin having a strong inkling that Do Jin was his father because he was the most handsome??? Really? I almost died laughing... The worst I've seen in any writing ever.

For the longest time, I scratch my head whenever you all mention Noble Idiocy because sometimes I get why the main characters use them... or should I say the authors use them to avoid real conflicts, but wow, this one I totally get why Noble Idiocy is the devil. Why waste two freaking episodes to focus on Do Jin's ridiculous excuse for why he can't handle both his newfound son and his girlfriend at the same time?

If we were going to take this, "I'm a father and I don't think I can handle both parenthood and boyfriend status," Colin's need to find a dad other than the curiosity of how he got his handsome genes should've been more necessary and useful. If Colin needed a transplant or blood transfusion, this plot would've made sense to me.

Who cares that the 18 year old with a perfectly "great" dad back home in Japan is now looking for a dad in someone that doesn't seem too keen to want him?

I just don't understand the need to take this plot. And because we're wasting time being forced to watch this, the other potential plots like Orangy911 aptly mentioned are gone... to the pits of No Return.

Judging by this botched-up writing, I won't be surprised if they try to jam up the reconciliation of JungRok/MinSook's relationship, Yoon/MeAhri's relationship and Do Jin's mysterious illness all in 5 episodes... I mean once they clear up this mess with Colin.

Though at this point, I am no longer interested in seeing what other tricks the Show writers have up their sleeves. I'm not in the mood for this type of lazy writing. I wish the show was over so I could fast forward to the end...

This show writers just need to figure out how best to salvage what sense they have left. I'm left questioning their adequacy to handle REAL conflicts besides "I'm Your Father" plots. Ugh... Can I fast-forward to the end please?

Thanks for the recap! I generally pretty much agree with your comments. There is a lot of untapped potential with this drama and its ensemble of interesting characters. However, not much is being done with them or perhaps their progress is too slow for a 20 episode drama (everyone is moving at the pace of a 40-50 episode drama). However, at the same time, I feel like the days and weeks in the drama move quicker than the average 16 episode drama. Seasons have changed.

My biggest disappointment is probably MeAhri. Please grow up a bit. Get your college degree and get a job outside of the cafe. I think she's been in Korea for about a year now and yet, week after week, she mopes over Yoon.

Colin was disappointing in this drama. And I think it's because of the writing and a bit because of the acting. What was his motivation? He's always so flippant. Did he think turning things up like this is some sort of fun game to satisfy his curiosity? or did he truly yearned to learn about his heritage?

Tae-san: I've overlooked all the things he has done that most people don't agree with, but this really takes the cake. He cares about his pride more than Sera's? What makes Sera, Sera, is because she is prideful. And he completely broke up with her after she begged to let them break up slowly. Now he comes around digging into her matters!

Do-jin: I hated when he broke up with Yi-soo. I'm glad Yi-soo cried and yelled at him. And I'm glad she had said to Tae-soo that if Do-jin had given her some time, she would have understood- which points out the rashness and noble idiocy of Do-jin's actions. If she hadn't said that, then I would have been really mad at the drama for thinking this is some sort of truly noble thing.

What was the point of introducing her to Eun-hee? I wouldn't have thought it rude, if Yi-soo and Do-jin were still together and he was introducing her to the mother of Yi-soo's potential stepchild, but dude, he threw Yi-soo away! Doesn't introducing Yi-soo and Eun-hee mean that he wanted to show Eun-hee that Yi-soo's his woman? Do-jin and Tae-san should stop giving our gals such mixed messages! You want to break up, let's break up cleanly.

Yi-soo, wait for Dong-hyub to grow up a little and marry him!

This whole ep made my head spin.
1. EunHee...slut and I do not like her and I do not think she knew who the father was.
2. DoJin..so much for you are my true love forever. BS! he was horrible to YiSoo.
3. YiSoo...sad how DoJin treated her...run away from this relationship as fast as you can.
4. Colin, I like him, what teenager would find it easy to deal with the fact your mother slept with four men. Again, I don't think she knew who the father was her's was hoper's guess. If she knew why didn't she tell Colin.
5. The other couples we just seem to go around and around.
6. I am going to watch to the end because I have so much time vested but like BIG...I seem to be reading more and more recaps.

I think we all agree that TS and DJ made the wrong choices with their girls. Happiness is still possible even when one a) doesn't want to marry but still remain together (as in the case of brangelina) or b) is found to have a child. Both are out of cultural norms, sure, but clearly are things a person can get over if u love someone enough.
And the Sandglass vignette at the beginning Is making that point....that their false beliefs/close-mindedness about what could be was and continues to be a problem in their 44 year old selves.

This drama had so much potential! It's going a bit downhill right now. I wanted it to be a breath of fresh air and unpredictable. But it's not going that way so far. I agree about the breakup. What exactly is at stake? Couldn't they have talked it over rationally like mature adults before breaking up? Eun hee is 100% over do jin and basically is here to round up her bratty son- who is the most boring character ever. The actor who plays him is stiffer than a robot. The most expressive his face got was in ep 15 and even then I winced at the attempt. I hope things get better.

"... six more episodes." WHAT?!
And here I thought (after watching ep 15) 'Good, now I'll just have to watch one more eps to have closure', 'cause to be honest I don't like the show but don't hate it neither.
I just stay to see where the show is going and have enjoyful moments of the openings of each episode. Those parts are funny and insightful and really reflect the title ...
The more important issue is what else to tell for the next 4 episodes (cause I see eps 15 and think it will end perfectly at eps 16 )? I know there are some more issues (Yoon-Me Ahri, Tae San-Se Ra, Min Sook-Jung Rok), but I think it's too late to make them deep and elaborate perfect closure.
And I agree about Dong Hyub's role in this drama. What is his purpose? Will he bring another secret or just there to be a filler and show how good a teacher Yi So is? (Unlike Colin, whose from the beginning we know some relation) because if it is so, that such a waste of talent...

The writing made me think that either all four gents were childless because they didn't know where babies came from or that they had all slept with Eun Hee that year.

Yeah I agree with you and everyone else in this post, but the writers spend WAYYY too much time focusing on the issue with Eun Hee and Colin wanting to find his dad.. The story should be more about what happens to the main couple.. Yi Soo and Do JIn and how they become a pair and have a great relationship that also involves the 4 guys and their woman.. not about a Past Woman who was their life but wasn't everything in their life.

They all moved on from EUn HEE.. no need to reemphasize it.

This episode so was soo sad I waited till today to watch it.. I really hope this isn't the focus of the story till the show ends because that's going to be a waste of the 6 remaining episodes and the loose ends for all the other problems are not going to be tied up. :(

Thank you for posting as always! :D

Thank you so much for he recap!!!
I have to agree partially with some of the comments!
First: I do love the little stories of the beginning of the show THEY ARE AWESOME!
Second: We all knew at one level or another that Colin was do Jin kid, I think the writers placed subtlety in the" picture looking scene" from last episode.
Third: I do understand why DJ let YS go. I do not agree with it but if we based it culturally DJ is protecting her from society and from his shock. i guess. Yet, I do agree with YS that DJ didn't give her the option to choose, but I do understand both of the situations. I don't like but I understand it! :)
About Mah eri, she is cute and fun to watch sometimes, but she needs to stop the tears like right now!
and I think that Colin and Dong Hyub will become best friends, or at least that is what i am wishing for :)

A lot of people here forget that this is a Korean drama. Not an American one with Korean actors...

When watching a KDrama expect a plot set in Korean society with Korean values... not American society with American value...

Do Jin reacts the way he should: he wants to protect Yi Soo from the shame that Korean society is (rightly) putting on his shoulders... As a Westerner, I might say it's refreshing to see that a man is held almost as responsible of the unwanted pregnancy than the woman...

And for PETTY SAKE Meahri is not immature: she just cry easily with shows her frustration not her weakness. OTHERS (brother and all) think of her as a baby: who would not be frustrated with that? She's strong and courageous enough to show her love over and over again, and over and over again she is rejected and treated like a baby!

You cant blame this on Jonghyun (aka Colin). I think its the writer's fault on how the story and characters are a little lost.
To be honest, Ive always found KES dramas to be a little flawed and not exactly to my liking- though she is a good writer. It has great potential to be a great drama but then somehow, the writer gets lost in the way and then things just get unnecessary. I felt the same way in Secret Garden, then her writing in Heirs just solidified my opinion.
