Arang and the Magistrate’s poster and behind-the-scenes photos

This newly released poster for Arang and the Magistrate may look ethereal and romantic, but as we know from the drama’s teaser, those are just two adjectives of many that describe the genre-mixing fantasy drama. Others include: quirky, comic, ghostly, action-packed, and fast-paced.

The poster copy reads “A fateful beginning, a truth greater than you imagined.” I suppose we can add mysterious to the adjective pile, because the premise hints at a secret behind the death of our heroine, Arang the ghost (Shin Mina), who doesn’t remember or know the reason for her murder. That makes it tricky when she appeals to the young magistrate Eun-oh (Lee Jun-ki) to help figure it all out. I find it interesting that the poster applies a fuzzy, romantic glow when it appears the heroine’s a grittier type of character than the goddess-like image makes her out to be. And we know from the preview that she’s hot-tempered and maybe a little badass, too. Which makes her that much more interesting in my eyes.

Below are more behind-the-scenes stills from the drama, which is being filmed in the thick of summer heat. Oy. I don’t envy anybody filming a drama right now, but it’s especially bad for sageuk performers, who’ve got to deal with all the layers of clothing. I don’t know how the stars look so refreshed, ice packs and mini-fans notwithstanding; in the summer it’s thick clothing and hot lights, in the winter it’s freezing sets with no heat, but I guess that’s the price you pay for being a star. Sure, the fame and piles of money don’t hurt, either.

Arang and the Magistrate follows I Do, I Do on Wednesdays and Thursdays, but thanks to the Summer Olympics there’ll be several weeks between the ending of I Do (it wraps this week) and Arang’s premiere on August 15. Time to catch up on all the dramas you’re behind on! Or, you know, I guess you could sleep.

I keep thinking if I should give this a shot. The premise doesn't really interest me but it has potential. Plus, Lee Junki. :D

Totally! She rocks the supernatural characters. If she does it forever, that would make me happy (if typecasting is wrong, I don't want to be right)! ;)~

my only concern is the 'ending'...How can this end well??? I'm so slumped down by supernatural elements in dramas right abt now, with Faith coming (time travel ...again) and this (undead and alive)...my heart can't take it...as it is I couldn't even watch the final ep of Rooftop Prince....wae wae wae???....having said that, I don't think I'll be able to stay away too long from this drama...

SMA rocks the bright and effervescent characters - not only as Miho, but in the series 'Punch' and the film 'Madeleine.'

I like the part she doesn't remember the reason for her murder. This somehow makes it seem so real, that you would forget what happened in your earthly existence once you become a wandering spirit. It's going to be fun piecing together the pieces and I suppose she's going to get flashbacks as she slowly retraces back her past with his help. I hope they don't make it too funny though. Hope this will be good. I'm still haunted LOL by "The Sixth Sense" which to me is one of the best ghost movies ever - terrifying but so sad. I cried buckets at the ending, and I think Arang's going to have a sad ending too.

This is a true sageuk if I'm not mistaken, so this could probably be just a half-body shot while she's running...the shoes are not featured. When it's full body shot, she'll be either proper sageuk sandals or running on thin air (she IS a ghost anyway)

Love it already !!! Between this and Faith, so far I find this more interesting and believable. I hope there is some twist in the story so the hero and heroine will be together (like actually she is in a long coma, but please no reincarnation!), 'cause LJK and SM look so cute together *fangirlingmodeon*

yeah, i was thinking that maybe arang is a living ghost. that her spirit is running around thinking she's dead but really she is in a coma due to an attempted murder

I was just about to write the exact same thing! If she doesn't remember how she was killed, she might not be dead. Who knows, she may have been saved by a shaman or a magic ahjumma (magic ahjummas FTW!) and her body is just lying somewhere unconscious. Guess that's a less awkward scenario for her than switching bodies with Gong Yoo.;) Let's hope they were inspired by Just Like Heaven.

Magic ahjummas XD

They could go really supernatural by someone stealing her body and pushing out the living soul... that would leave room for a possible reunion between the body and soul.

I decided I really really like romances that have impossible scenarios, or at least moments where everything thinks that the OTP getting together is impossible.

NOT stupid, MIL-induced-impossible like SG, or
"I saw you kiss your ex-girlfriend from when you were 12 and she told me you gave her a necklace that night I ran over to your house to confess in the rain"
but authentic, painful barriers.

How do you have a long term romance with a ghost?

Impossible in real life but possible in dramalife...

Thank you for this news! I'm always interested in what happens behind the scenes during the filming of a drama. It is so informative and it helps me appreciate the amount of work and effort that goes into making a drama or a movie, for that matter.
I also like to see some of the techniques that are used to create certain scenes, like when the characters seem to be flying or in the air, like Shin Mina seems to be prepared for in picture #8. I sometimes wish I could be a fly and be on the sets and follow them around to see how things get done, I am that curious about the whole process.

If one can look so cute with an ice pack on her head, it is definitely Shin Mina! So so cute! Together with Lee Jun-ki they are a winning pair! Love that "bed" scene :D

Super super looking forward to this drama. Sad about it being push back but happy for the cast. Hope they film at a comfortable pace.

Can't wait!!

You have missed one picture JB, the one where those of that beautiful people were on a horse bag, smile happily with a V sign on their hand and that bag of ice pack on the top of her head, that was really gorgeous and i can see how SMA feels ao comfortable with my Lee Joongi, soooooo adorable, keke, and yeah, this is the most promising drama i have anticipated so far!!!

and they use red epic camera, plus Lee Joongi does his stunts by himself and SMA is super cute...

Can i die now??? NO, i cant miss it!!!
