Well, when you’re on fire you’re on fire. Being knee-deep in one drama apparently doesn’t preclude you from getting cast in your next one, because Joo-won is reportedly up for the lead in the upcoming drama adaptation of Level 7 Civil Servant, the hit 2009 film starring Kim Haneul and Kang Ji-hwan (also called My Girlfriend Is an Agent). The drama version will be called Secret Man and Woman, which I suppose is less of a tongue-twister than the original film’s title, but still lacks a punch. Hopefully the production company will come up with an English title I like. But so far, the casting’s going in a direction I very much like.
It’s a romantic comedy about a regular guy who dates a woman not knowing that she’s actually a super-secret agent. She eventually ends things to keep her cover, and then returns years later… only by then HE’s been recruited to be a super-secret spy too, and their jobs start to complicate things. The movie’s awesome, the premise is rife with action and comedy, and when cast right, it should be crackling with chemistry.
The drama is being written by the original film’s writer, Chun Sung-il, of Chuno and Runaway. So we can expect slick, glossy action. All this has to be taken with a grain of salt though, as this drama has been in development for years, and has had many a casting rumor come and go. It’s reportedly got a slot on the MBC lineup, as a 24-episode Wednesday-Thursday drama, set to follow Arang and the Magistrate.
But that’s IF it can be cast in time, and already the production is in danger of not making that timeslot. The offer has been made to Joo-won, who’s considering the role, but that basically means zero time between Gaksital and this new drama, if he takes it. Will he never rest? I guess he wasn’t kidding about his Tae-woong hyung adoration and wanting to be just like him, because these guys don’t know the meaning of vacation.
I suppose when you’re young and hungry and you’re the hot new commodity around town, you sacrifice some zzzz’s to go from masked crusader of Joseon to secret agent man, all with a swagger and dimpled smile. We’ll see if this is the leading man to get this drama out of development hell and onto the roster for good. And I warn you now Show, if you can’t cast someone badass as the heroine, we will have WORDS.

Hi Ji Won would obviously be amazing as a spy, but everything I’ve seen her in has her doing similar roles. Not that there’s anything wrong with that (in fact, I’ve loved her even when some of her character’s have been frustrating), I’m just afraid that she’s being type-cast into roles as the tough warrior-woman. So I hope she’s NOT cast here, just because I want to see her doing something else and stretching her acting legs a bit more.

I like Ha Ji Won, but I don’t seem to be as hyped up about her as everyone else is. SG, in particular, wasn’t badass; it was simply bad. I think (mainstream) Korean TV has a gaping hole for kickass heroines and HJW just happens to one of the very few actresses to fill that quota.

I watched the movie version on the plane and laughed out loud so many times my sister sitting next to me was cringing. This movie was awesome and was so hyped about a drama version but now with Joo Won up for lead OMG am I pumped.
Joo Won playing a bumbling spy would be such a image reversal after all the badass cops hes been playing … and an image reversal straight after gakistal would be so much win.

The Real CZ, I’d be the first person to admit Kim Tae Hee is beautiful. She is, but I’d be lying if I said I thought her acting talent was up to par at this point. To me her range is flat, she has no real expression, and she approaches every role in the same way. She can get better, of course, I believe she can. But with this role, she’ll definitely need some 3-dimensionality and imagining that right now is laughable. So, I was laughing at Kim Tae Hee, not your comment.

I also see the tendency of not reusing OTP in other dramas, since KHN and KJH were already in 90 days, Time to Love.

well she is young somewhere between 18 and 20 I can’t remember so it makes sense that she looks young, but like I said she showed in Girl K she already has talent with tons of room to become even better, and I really want to see her in something new, also I’ve come to realize through watching dramas that make up, clothing, and hairstyle can drastically change how old you look.
there’s also the fact that the only other two actresses I can think of for the role Ha Ji Won and Kim So Yeon while I love both of them, it would annoy me if they were cast. I can totally imagine Joo Won being silly. Looked no further than Ojakgyo Brothers. Although he wasn’t silly per se, he played the part of the socially inept Hwang Tae Hee who is totally clueless when it comes to the fairer sex. He was just so funny even without a single scene of being over the top.
And if you dont have time, just watch his CFs like the KFC burger and the Mountia, the very short 2 to 3 secs in the beginning of the clips, so funny

Totally agree… some pairings in recent dramas just looked so off to me because of how young the male leads and how old the female leads tended to be. I hope casting directors start picking couples where both partners are of similar age.
While I admire his ambitions and talent as an entertainer. I am very concerned about him wearing himself out whiich is not good for his health. He is very hard at work with Gakistal, 1D2N, does guest appearances & gets approx. 30 mins sleep per week, when is he going to rest? The man must take a break after Gakistal in his case 1 month is reasonable. He must take care of himself, his career is fine right now, rest for his body is essential for him right now.
I did see the movie Level 7 Civil Servant which I enjoyed but for the remake I do not want him to star in it. Joo Won is just 25 (26 by Korean standards) and the lead character was older which made sense. Not saying that he cannot playing an older person, he has & did a pretty decent job at that. But for me, my preference would be someone else Hyun Bin comes to mind, I think he should be out of the army by then & he has the ability for that role, it would interesting to see what he can do with it or one the actors who just left the army as a comeback role its possibilities with good writing & directing are endless.
What human can function on 30 mins. of sleep a week? That’s less than sleep deprivation torture allows. It’s not possible for anyone to focus, memorize lines, have command of his emotions and facial expressions on that amount of sleep, right?
If we’re talking about taking Joo Won out of the equation entirely, I’d nominate Cha Tae Hyun or Jo Jung Suk for this ‘un.

I love Ji Hwan and Ha Neul in 7 Grade Civil Servant… watched it at the theater when it came out and laughed so hard…I have since re-watched it at least a dozen times and still not tired of it.
I am happy if Joo Won takes this drama although that would mean jumping from one drama to another without much rest but he’s young so I am sure he’ll be okay. It will be interesting to see him as a bumbling and awkward agent since the other three roles that he’s done are serious ones.
