Good morning everyone!
I have to go tutor French. I will be back later…
Morning Iv,
happy Friday
Good Afternoon, Zgznoona,
So good to hear from you!!! How are you? You are the one who went to Spain, if memory serves me right? If you are, how are things and are you still there?
You ‘re right, and I’m already back.
Everything is good so far, missing my family a little bit but good.
It was nice to go back home during the summer. I was able to do things I had not done in a long time.
Hey Zgz, I am currently cooking and I have a few things to do, but I will respond to your comment later. So if you can and if you remember, check back here later today or tomorrow, thanks!
Hi Zgz, I hope you will get to read this…
So what are you doing these days? Are you working now? Or just continuing to figure out what your next season is going to be like? (those things sometimes take time). It is always nice to be able to be with one’s family, isn’t it?
Did you go to Barcelona? (I don’t remember where your family is). Did you have some empanadas and chocolate con churros and the Spanish omelet with the potatoes inside and some good paella? (Man, I love Spanish food!) I have been to Spain twice a long time ago and I had a great time both times. I have been to Madrid, Avila (I studied there), Zamora, Salamanca, Toledo. I think that is all I can remember. I lived on La Calle Princesa when I was in Madrid, great times indeed! And I do speak Spanish, which was my major in college, both in France and in the US.
Bueno mi amiga, que lo pase bien. I hope you are having a great weekend!
Iv,here you have my reply. Better late than never
I’m still trying to think what to do next. Making the decisions isn’t my forte. And I’m actually trying to take a big step in my life. So the more I consider it, and the more I research about my alternatives the less certain I feel.
In any case, I hope I come with a definitive plan soon. though, you know that in life things never happens as you plan them.
I was good to be back home for such a long time, but now that I’m back there are times I feel homesick. Oh well… I’m a big girl, so I better overcome it soon.
I didn’t visit Barcelona, the plane lands in Madrid. My home city, Zaragoza (that’s where zgz comes from), is located in the NE, just between Madrid and Barcelona.
So you lived in Spain??!!! that’s great, I think there are several her in OT who have already told me they lived there when they were young.
I didn’t have any chocolate con churros, too hot for that. But I had my mom’s potato omelet that is the best in the world.
Well, see you at the next OT
Hi Ivy! Just thought I’d let you know that I read your epic post from last week, we can definitely continue the discussion here, if you don’t mind.:)
Hello Oftheshore,
I am so glad you read it, because I kept checking the page and not seeing any comments from you and I felt so bad and felt like I wrote that “Epic post” for nothing. I was thinking “I went through the trouble of writing all of this, and she won’t read it?
” Especially since as I had said, I couldn’t do it in a timely fashion. I am glad you thought of checking and that you read it.
I am back from tutoring, so yes, we could continue the conversation here and on the posts of episodes 13 and 14 (when that one is posted). How are you, and what did you think of my epic post?
Oh no, Ivy! I’m really sorry for not replying – by the time I decided what to write it was already Wednesday, so I chose to wait until Friday, that was really stupid of me.:(
Either way, I loved the cute moments in episodes 11 and 12, and even more so in the last two episodes! TK writing suggestions on his hand, singing and just being awesome made me smile. I also laughed at JA thinking she has some great cooking skills – and later when she suggested cooking ramen for TK, and the poor was trying to get out of eating it! My favourite cute scene in the last four episodes has to be JA and TK squealing and spazzing after their victory.
On a more serious note, I loved that they chose not to drag out the ‘why didn’t you tell me’ conflict too much. It’s also great to see TK making progress in terms of his career. I don’t think he necessarily has to go to the States to become a good designer, but I wouldn’t *really* mind it if he accepts the offer.
By the way, I was the one who suggested that TK and Ankle would sneak out to get food from a nearby restaurant, because I used to do this with my own dad.
It’s not a perfect drama by any means – as you said, it’s more of a dessert than the main course. Side characters and subplots clearly needed more work, for example. Still, I just love JA and TK as characters and the chemistry they have together.
Would you recommend Gaksital? It seems like something I would enjoy…
Hey OTS (short for OfTheShore
)
I am currently cooking and I have a few things to do, but I will be back to respond, you should know me by now
. Please check back later, thanks!
Hi OTS, I am back
! And I hope you will get to read this.
You know, I thought about my epic post and I guess we can just say that I am passionate about Kdramas (and Korean culture in general) and I also LOVE to write. You put those two things together and you get an “Epic Post”
, I think.
I am OK that you chose to wait until Friday, that actually makes sense to me. Next time, just let me know that you will wait until next OT. One line to let me know would be fine. I do tend to get carried away when I write and I got this response for the 1st time here. Check this out if you are interested and read my response (let me know what you think

My response: 1.2.1.1 Ivoire July 12th, 2012 at 6:29 pm
I loved the scene with JA and TK spazzing and squealing. Have you ever seen the American show “Friends?” TK reminded me of Chandler, because I thought it was something Chandler would do.
I think it would be a great opportunity for TK to go to the US, however I don’t know if he should continue to work for that company (considering how they are treating JA and he would have to work with Jake, *Shivers*…) I do think TK should be formally trained and educated, whether in the US or in Korea. I wouldn’t mind him going to the US, but I don’t want him to miss the pregnancy and the birth of his baby. He should absolutely experience those things because he would appreciate them.
Like you, I am glad they didn’t drag out the “why didn’t you tell me conflict” as they have other issues to figure out. I “Awwwwwed” at the comment of you going out with your dad to a restaurant to get some good food. That was so sweet
Regarding Gaksital, you would love it (I think) if you have seen City Hunter and The King 2 Hearts and loved them. It is the same genre, except Gaksital is more intense and violent. It is fast paced, a lot of action but as many have said, it is epic. The acting is really good, the cinematography is awesome as you know koreans are really good with that, the musical score, Wow!!!! I love it.
I am sure it has his flaws, I have read people complain about the fact that they didn’t thoroughly do their research on the time period, regarding the cars and clothes and maybe the type of dancing that occurs. I wouldn’t know, as I am not well versed in that period. I also haven’t watched all the episodes of Gaksital, just a few, but I already know that I will love it. It does keep you on the edge of your seat, I can say that and it does get quite emotional.
I hope my short review helps. People have been raving about it on OT as well. You can always watch one or two episodes and decide if you like it or not. I hope you are having a great weekend. How is your PhD. coming along?
Hi Oftheshore, I also wanted to add that I have just read some of the comments on episode 14 of Gaksital and they are quite informative. Some of the discussion is quite good and engaging. Something to keep in mind.
Hey Ivoire,
I could basically sign my name under your post. I absolutely agree that TK doesn’t really have to go to the US to learn the craft. He might as well study in Korea – in fact, with his limited knowledge of English, I think he might have language issues if he goes to the States. By the way, I noticed that characters in Korean dramas can easily travel around the world and study/work anywhere they want. I’d love to see at least one drama where a character has visa/work permit issues.
Also – LOLed at your mention of ‘Friends’. TK definitely has some Chandler-like traits.
Thanks for your thoughts on Gaksital! It sounds – from what you said and from the recaps – like it’s something I would enjoy, so I’ll give it a try! Like JB and GF, I wanted City Hunter to be a bit darker, so I’ve been ready for dark dramas for a while now.
My PhD is…Well, I’m stuck in a phase where I just can’t make a decision about the research question, as I wrote in my comments to Alua’s post somewhere in this thread. The trick is to choose a topic that’s both ambitious and doable.
Hi OTS,
We meet again
! Thank you for reading my post. Isn’t it interesting how we live in different places of the world (you in Europe and me in the US), that we are from different countries and yet we tend to see the same things in this drama. Wow, the love of Kdramas has no geographical boundaries and the analysis of them either, I reckon.
You know, Jomo pointed something worth pondering in the last recap of IDID: that in going to the US, TK would be getting more than a formal education. He would be doing an internship, would probably be going to NY because apparently going to the US in Kdramas is associated with going to NY where he would be exposed to the world in a US and international sense. He would be exposed to fashion, entertainment (classical music, reminds me of Dr. when he listened to that classical piece which name I can’t remember), food, etc… all those things that make NY, NY. And I have to say that I do see her point, and she has one.
I just really don’t want him to miss the pregnancy and the birth of the baby because TK is the kind of man who would absolutely LOVE being a part of that. If it were another man who doesn’t deeply care about those things, it would be different, but our TK is not like that. So I’m not sure of how the writer will tie everything in. I guess we will find out soon enough next week.
Like you, I would like to see a main character or some characters in a Kdrama have some visa-work/permit issue or issues about getting a visa to go study abroad. That would be a novelty and would be quite interesting. Maybe we should write to the writers of Kdramas and suggest that. And I agree with you that they do seem to be able to travel easily. They must get along well with all the countries, if they can get visas from any country to go in.
Let me know what you thought of Gaksital once you start watching it. And you are welcome, about my review of Gaksital (at least from what I gleaned). Since you like darker dramas, you should definitely check it out. Also check out “The Chaser” who has the City Hunter’s dad in it. There’s only the sub for episode 1, unfortunately. However it is very good! Keep an eye on it. It has ahjussis in it (as the main leads), so you know the acting is excellent
(and it is). It also has its emotional moments, and I cried during those.
About this: “My PhD is…Well, I’m stuck in a phase where I just can’t make a decision about the research question, as I wrote in my comments to Alua’s post somewhere in this thread. The trick is to choose a topic that’s both ambitious and doable.
”
. I hope that you will be able to come up with a solution soon, Oftheshore, Fighting!!!!. What field are you in?
Awwww… OTS, I feel bad for you
Good to read your post, as always!
@ Kelinci Biru,
I posted this last week for you and I don’t know if you got a chance to read it (about the drama with Tim Whang and the actress from Indonesia). Thank you for your link, I saw the video and loved it and saw the trailer for the drama. Please let me know when it will be airing in Indonesia if you remember. Hope all is well with you! I think the languages used (mostly) will be English and Korean, unless I am mistaken (you can correct me).
2.4.2.1 Ivoire July 7th, 2012 at 11:43 pm
Hello Kelinci Biru,
I hope that you will get to read this message. I have been quite busy this weekend, so I could only get to your message now.
Thank you so much for answering my post. I asked about this drama now because they said that it would air in July, so I wanted to see if anyone here knew about it. So, is the singer (Tim) big or huge in Indonesia? I had never heard about him before I stumbled on that article. And as I mentioned earlier, I am really interested in how they tackle the cultural differences.
I am also curious about the languages that will be spoken in the drama. Do you know what they will be? (Will they be using Korean and a (or some) language(s) from Indonesia?
This sounds like a very interesting project. I hope we will be able to find it online with English subs. And yes, please keep me posted as soon as you have some information. I might not always be here, so please feel free to email me at : amvondo1@gmail.com (I would greatly appreciate it). Thanks again.
I hope your weekend is going well
Hi Ivoire! I heard about this project before. I knew Tim from past variety shows and then I stumbled upon your post here. I don’t think that many people in Indonesia knew about Tim before this project, or rather before he released his single in Indonesia. But he definitely is famous now (given the amount of Indonesian infotainment videos I found).
I read somewhere that the drama will premiere on July 16th, so I can’t tell you much and I don’t think I’ll be watching it since I’m not in Indonesia at the moment. Sometimes some fans would upload the show on YouTube, so if I watch it, I’ll definitely elaborate more on this.
However, I’ve seen the trailer and from what I saw, I believe they’ll be using English, Korean, and Indonesian for the dialogue, with Indonesian subtitles when dialogue is in Korean or English. The drama itself will be shot in Korea and Bali. And I spotted some of the famous locations in K-drama, like the amusement park in Stairway to Heaven and also the corridor which is surrounding the main courtyard of Gyeongbokgung Palace.
I think that this is Tim’s first acting role(?), so I can’t really judge much from the trailer. However I’m not sure about the female lead. I’ve seen her in Indonesian soap before and I think that her acting is just sub-par. She’s not versatile, and she always portrays the same painfully depressing characters.
The dialogue (at least from what I heard in the trailer) is cringe-worthy in parts esp when English conversation is involved. The scenes seem to resemble many typical scenes from Korean drama. I’m not sure about the lighting and editing since it’ll be produced by one of the major TV stations in Indonesia. Although, I kinda wish that another TV station with better camera, lighting, and editing team would do this project. Keeping my fingers crossed that the end result won’t come out like Dr Jin ep 14 (which is almost the case for many of the soaps produced by this TV station).
One thing I notice is the exposure of Indonesian cultures. There’s a scene of a traditional Balinese dance and other rituals, and I believe it’ll feature many beautiful shots of Bali!
Ah, I just read that you’ve seen the trailer.
@ Maya, Good morning (it is 6:03 am where I live),
Thank you for your response, which actually answered some of the questions I had. The past variety shows where you saw Tim, were they Korean variety shows or were they Indonesian? I am kind of assuming Korean, since you also mentioned that people in Indonesia didn’t know much about Tim Whang until this drama. I read that his single was released in April in Indonesia. Is that when they started to talk about this project in Indonesia? Do you think he released his single in Indonesia because he knew he would be in this drama or do Korean singers regularly and usually promote and release their singles/albums in Indonesia? (I am just curious…)
Please let me know if you do watch the drama or parts of it on Youtube or any where else online. I have included my email address in the message to Kelinci Biru (in case I don’t participate on OT on a particular Friday) so please feel free to contact me there if you don’t see me here and if you do remember. I am very interested in this drama because of its subject matter and also because I am very curious of how they will tackle (and act) the cultural differences. This (in my opinion) is a very interesting and relevant subject because people do intermarry and some Koreans (living in Korea) have married foreigners, as demonstrated on the KBS show “Love in Asia,” I think that is the title, if memory serves me right. I currently live in the US and I have seen that show on KBS World. I even saw an African woman on the show who was talking about her experience of having married a Korean and living in Korea (I am African, by the way). I like that show, as they show the difficulties people who intermarry go through. They also try to come up with some solutions.
Thank you for mentioning the (filming) sites that they showed from Korea, as I am not familiar (yet) with many of them. I haven’t seen Stairway to Heaven yet, so I don’t know the sites that were used for that drama. Please forgive my ignorance, but Bali is a part of Indonesia then? I don’t know why I assumed that it was an island independent of other places. The world is such a big place, it is hard to know about every country on the planet, as curious as I am about the world. I think it is such a great idea that they will be showcasing Bali’s beautiful spots and some of Indonesia’s cultural elements such as dances, rituals, etc… Hopefully that will increase Bali and Indonesia’s tourism numbers (for lack of a better word).
It also seems to me that it might be Tim’s first acting role. I get the sense (I could be wrong) that they partially chose the actress because she is beautiful. I have seen the trailer and I was not impressed with their acting, if I may be so honest. It made realized how good Korean actors and actresses are (those who can act). I have the feeling that they might have chosen Tim because his English is excellent (he is Korean-American) so people will actually be able to understand him when he speaks, and that is important. And Tim gets to try his hand at acting
“The dialogue (at least from what I heard in the trailer) is cringe-worthy in parts esp when English conversation is involved. The scenes seem to resemble many typical scenes from Korean drama.”
I agree with you on this, I was also not impressed by the dialogue and its delivery (the little that I heard). I do hope however that this project will be a success, as it is different from what we usually see in Kdramas.
Please remember to keep me posted if you hear and read anything new regarding this drama. I would greatly appreciate it. I hope your weekend is going well!
Sorry for the delay, folks. A glitch prevented it from posting on time! Sigh, technology.
jb!
I thought a Friday the 13th gremlin threw a wrench into the works.
OT, Fighting !
That’s Friday the 13th for you – not that we’re superstitious or anything.
Have a great weekend, JB and the DB team!
The Universe finally recovered its balance.
Glad you could fix the problem
Yeah, it was getting scary there….
Glitch, the other “itch” that drives us all crazy!!!
^ i wish i could *like* your comment. made me lol so bad, coz it’s too freaking true!
Oh. So that explains why at this time the OT is still the most recent thread, and still 23 comments long.
Must be F13 glitch/joke.
Glad everything’s okay now.
Happy Friday y’all!
i panicked…
it was about 9:30 am PST when i woke up and i couldn’t find OT. normally it’s posted around 6:30 am in my time.
i kept checking and im glad it’s here now.
From my experience, glitches on dramabeans are about as rare as “Friday the 13th”s. Hats off to you, jb, for the incredible job you do running this site– I don’t know how you make such a huge undertaking seem effortless. Chongmal kamsahamnida!
It was so weird to wake up and check your site and not see Open Thread! I was getting worried. Just shows how much of a Dramabeans addict I am.
I 2nd your feelings SweetiePie54, realizing how much of a Dramabeans addict I have become. I kept thinking that maybe the OT thread was being delayed (which it had to be because of the glitch). I was up early, hoping to be able to at least say “Hello.” I kept refreshing the page throughout the morning.
Between 8 and 9am, I became worried, thinking that maybe something had happened to Javabeans or Girlfriday, such as one of them being in a accident or something that simply prevented them to manage the site. I was getting worried, so I emailed Javabeans, letting her know that I hoped that they were OK. I also texted Cherkell to see if she knew what was going on. I am relieved that my worries were unfounded and that it was just a glitch.
Phew *wipes eyebrow*
Oooo…. Friday the 13th gremlins are on the move!
The funny thing is, I’ve been on the site since earlier and kinda thought something was missing, but was so distracted by the posting of a possible extension for Dr. Jin that no OT presence just vanished off my radar!
So, as it’s 3 pm EST, Good Afternoon, OTers!
Oh, btw – anyone here watching ‘Unexpected You’ aka ‘You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly’ or ‘My Husband Got A New Family’? JB mentioned it in the Kim Nam Joo – Sueng-Woo post yesterday. It’s due to run into September and I’m loving every minute of it.
anyone here watching ‘Unexpected You’?
I am! I’m really enjoying it too. It’s just the way I like my family dramas– lite on the melodrama, heavy on the cute, funny and/or touching moments. Does anyone know who’s subbing this drama so that I can thank them?
I’ve been watching it at kimchidrama. It’s great that the subbing team only runs 2 episodes behind – unusual for a long-running drama.
Thank you I posted a comment on Dr Jin while waiting for OT:-) Thank goodness everyone was civilized. How late was it? I finally went to bed at 2am because I really wanted to ask a question this week here.Off to aks it.
I’m so disoriented by being on the other side of the world in China.
Happy Friday the 13th =)
Hello everyone!! Today’s my first time at the OT! ^^ Who who is looking forward to this weekend? Got any plans for the weekend? Not much on my end-had to cancel a dinner with friends
n looks like I’ll be cancelling another visit to a friend’s place too! Meanwhile, I’ve got A Gentleman’s Dignity to look forward to tomorrow and the day after!
Nowadays I’m watching just Gaksital and AGD! Love them both! ^^ <3
Hi there,
not much on my side either.
Well is my roommates birthday. She told me to go with her and her friends to play volleyball at the beach. But I might decline.
Tho, I made her carrot cupcakes and she loved them
Wow, carrot cupcakes! They must have been delicious! I haven’t had carrot cupcakes but I am in love with carrot cake!!
My friends were enjoying a dinner gathering tomorrow but I cant go with them so (I’m a little depressed because of that!
But I’ll be fine by morning!
I am contemplating whether to write over the weekend or opt for studying instead
The only difference between one and the other is the shape and size. I used a recipe for carrot cake.
Sorry to hear you can’t make to your friend’s dinner.
Hehe, oh!
Are you fond of baking? I wish I knew more than how to bake a cake or make some whipped cream but Alas!
I’m sorry to miss the dinner too-I was hoping we’d have a gathering so we could meet up. But there’s no need to fret over it since I can’t make it anyway. Besides, I doubt they’ll miss me much! I’m the quietest of the bunch n the least outgoing-termed ‘loner’ so to speak, so I probably won’t even hear from them again for a while…
Baking is not that hard either. And if it doesn’t work the first time, it’ll work the next one.
I love cooking in general, but I particularly like to cook for others.
Hehe, no wonder ahjummabunny wants to be your roommate! Heck, I would too, if it meant eating delicious food everyday! ^^
zgz wanna be roommates???? Every time it rains it’s my birthday. Are you back from home?
If I ever move up north we can talk about the roommate deal.
Are you Joo Yoo Rin from My Girl?
I’m back in the US, and trying to figure out what to do with my life. I was so tempted to stay…
How are you doing bunny?
If you send me your complete chef portfolio I’ll move anywhere you say and sleep in the shoe closet.
This bunny is tired for the usual reasons. I’m glad you decided to come back this time. have you started working yet? You could always study something like culinary arts of india or china and invite rabbit teeth girls to visit.
LOL
Study culinary arts of China or India sounds like a plan, and actually one that I already have in mind.
Not too sure how I’m going to do it, but I’m seriously looking into moving to Korea or Japan, to learn cooking and a lot more.
Worked all week, so I’m going to have to study all weekend! Gotta get my hours in!
Best of luck with the studying! I usually find myself falling asleep the more I stare at my books!
when that happens i just take a nap!
nah, fortunately i can alternate between reading / analysing data / inputting data / etc. so that helps.
what do you do/study?
I’ve found the same works for me and along with a nap, I opt for a break with watching something interesting-an episode, a movie or something that would refresh my mind. Sometimes I also end up writing, but that’s on a few rare occasions! That makes the sleep bugs run away for a bit and I can get back to studying and revising.
I’m actually done with my degree studies but I’m preparing to take a national exam for civil service. It’s different subjects-tons of reading and revising. By profession I’m an Architect and I practiced a bit after graduation but then circumstances changed and I’m taking the exam so preparing for that!
Same here. By the way, Alua, I checked out your blog and it as great.:) What exactly are you researching?
argh, it is*
No, I’m not using Nvivo (though I did look into that briefly). I use WordSmith Tools mainly, plus manual analysis. I compiled my own parallel corpus and use several large, general corpora (British National Corpus, COCA, Survey of English Usage, COSMAS, DWDS and the web-as-corpus) as part of the instruments to measure linguistic creativity. It’s a real methodology hotchpotch.
If you are doing 3 years than you are not in the US? (Or did you say last week you are in the UK? Don’t remember!) I’m part-time, and have done almost 3 years and hoping *knock on wood* to finish in 2 more.
I know what you mean with everyone else’s topic seeming more interesting. Some people are also so impressively passionate about their topics – I like mine, but I’m under no illusion that it’s relevant in any way.
And when I’m done, if I stay in academia, I’ll do research on subtitling, particularly fan translation (which has absolutely nothing to do with what I’m doing now).
Don’t worry about not being sure about what phenomenon to study. It’ll come to you eventually. When I started, my supervisors told me to forget my original proposal and read anything and everything and to get totally confused! Which is exactly what the first year was like and only then did I figure what I didn’t want to focus on, and what was of interest to me.
Oops. That was meant to go under 3.2.2.2.3!
Thanks. Hope you got inspired to watch some film.
I research linguistic creativity in retranslation. I’m in translation studies/comparative literature/corpus linguistics.
That sounds really interesting – good luck with your research! People who are already analyzing their data are my main source of inspiration.
Ha ha! My main inspiration are people who actually can already say something about their data (you know, write about it)… As I told my supervisors that I’m currently not seeing the forest for the trees! Which is okay – that’s how it should be be at the moment but, man, that colleague of mine that submitted and successfully passed her VIVA, two weeks ago… would be nice to be there already!
Are you doing research (but not yet analysing?)?
Yes, a few friends of mine have just officially become Doctors, so I can definitely understand what you mean.:) Don’t worry, you’ll start seeing the logical patterns in your data soon enough! Are you using NViVo, by the way?
I’m on a 3-year programme, which requires you to do an MRes (this involves attending lectures and working on research projects for each individual course) *and* work on your PhD in the first year, so I’m in this phase where I’ve just realized I’m not sure which specific phenomenon I want to study. Everyone’s topic seems to be more interesting than mine these days. Have to make a decision soon, because my supervisors want me to start collecting data in autumn.
I don’t know the lingo in your field, so I may be way off base here (and possibly sound like an idiot), but when you talk about “linguistic creativity in retranslation,” are you referring to things like word choice and nuance? Like, what are all the considerations that go into deciding on one particular word rather than another? And I suppose what I just said could refer to regular writing (as in, any regular person writing something in his or her native language), not only to translation — I wonder what the particular considerations are when you’re trying to most accurately convey something someone else wrote… like, how do you determine their exact intention?
Sorry… like I said, I don’t have the vocabulary to express my questions accurately, but there are a lot of ideas here that I find fascinating, and I wish I knew more about the subject so I could phrase my questions better…
Hey Alua,
Thanks for the advice (3.2.2.1.1 alua July 13th, 2012 at 1:26 pm) – it seems like a lot of people are waiting to finish their PhD projects to start working on research questions they are actually passionate about (which is a little sad, but probably has to do with the politics of the academia). Fan translation is a great topic – a long time ago I wanted to study it myself, just from a very different perspective. Hope you get a chance to research it.
Loved your supervisors approach, too! I think it actually makes a lot of sense, and I’m glad it helped you.=)
Yes, you remember correctly, I’m based in the UK. Going to London tomorrow, but all of the plans fell through at the very last second…which tends to happen every time I go there. =(
To be honest, it’s complicated. There isn’t one way of being linguistically creative, it more depends on what you want to focus on. One could look at word choice and nuance, one could look at grammar (or certain aspects of it such as syntactical or phonetic choices). I’m using a specific definition of linguistic creativity (based on a particular linguistic model), which essentially relies on measuring word/phrase choices compared to the way language is used normally/conventionally (which is where the corpora – large databases of language – come in as they can highlight to usage patterns). This sort of aspect you can explore this without ever looking at translations.
That said, because I am looking at retranslations I’ve seen linguistic creativity that doesn’t fit the model, i.e. language that is conventional and doesn’t strike you as original/creative/unexpected/innovative in any way but is so once you compare it to the other translations (i.e. other translations using the same/similar words/phrasing but one doing something completely different). I will discuss both these different types of creativity since they are equally valid and interesting to my project.
I don’t look at an author’s (or translator’s) intentions – it’s something we cannot ever know (even if they state it, they can be lying). Both literary studies and translation studies don’t really consider this anymore (i.e. Roland Barthes’s “The author is dead”) but try to focus on the data/facts we have before our eyes. In other words, while I can say translator B is doing the same in a particular sentence if it is identical to one from translator A, I can’t make claims that Translator B is copying Translator A (ever though he might have been).
Don’t worry about your ‘lingo’ – you don’t need specialised terminology to talk about these things, in fact, I think it’s often clearer to ignore all the specialist terms and just think about them in non-scientific language!
Thanks for being so interested btw.
That comment was in response to Sethe in case that wasn’t clear…
@offtheshore. You don’t need plans for London! There is always things to do, unplanned.
As I said, I’m just going to study this weekend and ignore the world, but next time you come to London you can make plans with me!
Alua,
Yep! That’s one of the reasons why I miss London so much – so many things you can do there and no need to plan ahead (unless you want to see a play with one of the big stars, of course)! It would be great to meet you and learn more about your research (and discuss dramas!). I have to come again next weekend anyway, because the plan I had was to collect something from a friend, and then again in August…
Good luck with the studies, don’t work *too* much.=)
@offtheshore I’m not sure yet if I’ll be in London next weekend – was going to go see a friend, but haven’t finalised plans yet.
I am definitely not in London during all of August though.
It’s sounds like you live close enough to visit fairly regularly though?!
Hi Mariah! Have a good Friday and weekend!
Don’t have plans yet..will be working Saturday soo… maybe will do something Sat. night but who knows…..anything goes I guess.
I hate working Saturdays the most! Weekend’s ought to have both Saturday and Sunday off!
I have to go for a house visit on Sunday with my mother and will probably have to take her to the market tomorrow. I hate the market visit the most-sitting outside in the car in the heat isn’t a much pleasant experience, hehe.
I’m hoping to get some studying and writing done over the weekend… Who knows…
Good luck with your work load! ^^
Hello everyone!
How are you guys doing?
Anyone watched The Promise, 2005 movie with Jang Dong Gun? I’m trying to find a subbed version online but couldn’t.
I’m a new JDG fan. Just recently realized he’s just the right age for me to drool over. a 72′er
In other news… I think Gaksital is not good for my heart or my nails.
Have a Happy Weekend!
I’ve seen it but I downloaded it ages ago from doramax264.com! Don’t know if its still there though!
And Gaksital isn’t good for anyone’s heart or nails but its too good to let go of, hehe!
Yes, have The Promise: I don’t know where it is available subbed on-line. It’s a good movie, overall, probably not one to purchase unless you are a major JDG fan (as I am), and have all of his works! The movie suffers from an over-ambitious director and a simplified storyline: had it been in defter hands, the movie would have been far more noteworthy. Add to that critical press for production problems, and it is not one of JDG’s “successes”. However, he’s brilliant, as always, and the story is worthy if not stellar.
Review here if you are interested, but be ALERTED to SPOILERS in this review: http://www.lovehkfilm.com/reviews_2/promise.htm
Thanks Mariah, Leonardswench! The reviewer wasn’t very kind to the movie.
Not sure if i should bother scouring the net to find it now. Oh well, there are so many other JDG gems out there. One good thing about slightly older actors… they have worked longer so there’s more drama/movies of theirs to see.
Aoiaheen, have you seen Jang Dong Gun’s Warrior’s Way? Somehow, I liked the movie a lot even though it was a bit mild compared to what I usually watch and enjoy! The Promise was a little too much ‘fantasy’.
No, i havent. And that’s actually because it’s in english. I watched the trailer and it was cowboys and ninja’s. Somehow I didn’t think it would be good combination.
But if you think its good i’ll give it a try.
Ummm, It wasn’t as good as it should have been or as I expected but by the end of it, I didn’t think it was a waste of time and rather enjoyed it. If you’ve nothing else to watch, check it out. Maybe you might find it a good time pass too!
“Warrior’s Way” – I watched it just for JDG’s english and his forehead (this was before the mambo scene in AGD 12). Not a terribly well-put-together movie, but not bad fluff for a rainy afternoon.
The Promise used to be on YouTube (subbed) until very recently! It’s been removed. I’m pretty sure it’ll be uploaded again soon, with the current JGD craze going on
just checked Netflix for you and they have 2 titles for Jang Dong Gun:
The Warrior’s Way
Good Morning President
sorry, man.
Thanks. I think i’ll watch warriors way this weekend.
Hello there, I myself am a HUGE JDG fan. I’ve seen The Promise, but didn’t really like it, though the cinematography was good. I’m not a fan of kung foo movies, though. He was good of course.
My favorite movie of his is Chingu (Friend). Everyone is really good in that movie. Actually, come to think of it, it’s one of my fav. movies ever. Got me watching Korean dramas and movies.
In reference to later comments, I just watched Good Morning President last night. Really good movie; I highly recommend it.
I’m excited for his next one, Dangerous Liaisons. He looks really good with facial hair.
heart, nails, what? I just got a nosebleed from watching it, with some gray braincalls flowing out as well.
Happy Friday and weekend! Snowed under with costumes and business, have to squeeze in writing, too, why did I promise a September deadline?
Yeah, mental-pause made me do it.
K-dramas gone crazy week — Dr. Jin extension? BIG disappointment with the entirety of Big? Arang delay? (at least that is for a just cause, The Olympics) the snark in me wants to go off about a dozen things, saving it for the blog!
Hope everyone finds some joy today!
yes, this has been a crazy, disappointing week for the doc and big, but! gaksital made my days with such great episodes!!! (F44 are like a wildcard that doesn’t amuse me much…)
have a nice weekend!
I was thinking that Dramabeans doesn’t do Friday the 13th OTPs out of superstition. j/k
Happy Friday, all!
Lol, I’ve never even totally read what the Friday the 13th curse was all about! :S
I think it’s just that 13 is an unlucky number and Friday is an unlucky day. But I’m not biased, I love all my Fridays–even the ones that land on the 13th.
Hehe, same here, love all fridays, no matter the dates! Besides, today wasn’t anymore unlucky than it ought to be! Had a rather good day! ^^ Happy Friday to you too! ^_^
Poor 13, to be labelled unlucky!
…and I thought no OT because of holidays or what…
OK, this bellow is my attempt to make a photo of a van on highway at 150km/h

Wasn’t as successful as I wished for, but you can guess the slogan
As for others,
- Salmon Fishing was good – first half actually pretty good, the second departed from the book and was a bit weaker. For people who like English humour and nice photography recommended.
- Not much interested in the fuzz in AGD about one found and one lost person
- Much more interested in further development of the relationship of one teacher and her student. Yes, GDR a KKJ finally did it!
- Behind with IDID and Gaksital.
Happy weekend!
Still on the fence about watching Salmon Fishing – did you see it in the cinema or at home? Should I just rent it when the DVD comes out?
I went to the cinema. Was actually the good old cinema, no popcorn. great. I liked the movie, it is a good-feel-movie with plenty of humour. But I liked the book better.
Hi Dorotka!
I guess I am dumb, but I’ve got no idea about the slogan
As for dramas – I don’t follow BIG except for having a glimpse or two on the recaps, and when you wrote about a teacher I first thought about Seo YiSoo and her troublemaker student. Then computed GDR and understood
Have a lovely weekend!
No, you are not dumb
It was meant for one of the regulars here who has the same name as what was on the truck. Although I actually don’t know if she is still visiting OT, I haven’t been here for a long long time…
I still like Big, and now Da Ran even leaves her supporting role and is becoming the lead as well… pity we didn’t have more of her doubts and talks with her father earlier….
The story of Seo Yi Soo and Do Jin doesn’t interest me… sorry… though with the student… could be interesting
Charming troublemaking students are fun. I tell ya
I hope this character will be given some importance in due time (read: ASAP)
…and I thought no OT because of holidays or what…

Yay! TGIF though it’s already Saturday in my area?
Gee. Didn’t watch episode 14 of A Gentleman’s Dignity. Don’t think can tolerate the heartache & etc for a week till ep 15 and 16 come along.
But manly mature men are really attractive! Cha Seung Won, Jang Dong Gun etc. They just give off this confidence and charisma?
Just saw this yesterday?
Choi Siwon’s Mamonde CF

Think just stare at the screen and grinning crazily/non-stop.
oh, now it will be watched 1,000 times …. to be a teenager again! Glad my daughters will enjoy this, thanks for posting the link!
Ha. There are 20 other different clips for this cf- 21 videos altogether for 21 days. =)
oh, dear, then I really wasn’t kidding about how much it will be watched …….
all I can really be grateful for, then, is that they loathe Justin Bieber. At least it is K-pop idols over and over ….
Happy OT everybody!
AGD why are you breaking my heart and killing my fun? Can someone explain the ending for episode 14 cause I am confused on who’s the papa.
AGD SPOLERS****
The Papa is DoJin, he broke up with Yi Soo, because he thinks he’s damaged goods now.
Sucks tho
Opps, me and my typos spoilers
So the paternity test just confirmed it?
Exactly
Is it really him? I wasn’t able to decipher the name on the result paper… still any chance of a twist?
Anyway, still don’t get why to go for such radical measures…
I would bet on a twist: A good one. I need to smile again. Needed 4 days to recap this episode, now I want my candy.
Thats what I thought because Colin looked shocked. I would be pissed at a twist. I mean wouldn’t Eun Hee know who she slept with? I don’t believe she slept with all four of them! How ridiculous it would be if they pull a fast one on everyone! All the heartache for nothing.
i know koreans are conservative people, but why such a fuss over a son he didn’t know he had and appear after 18 years!!!! just gimme a break you guys! this is ridiculous ¬¬.
i know right? (part of the AGD beanut gallery, and i’m not even watching this drama …)
I was so sad when I came for a couple.
Well I missed a couple of OT but Step 1 on learning to drive is complete got my permit. I have not driven a car yet but thanks to all the advice everyone give me it really helped.
First thing I wanted to say is did anyone else the boom of Japanese drams that primed this week. I thought my drama list was about to get smaller but looks like I’ll be adding a few. Number 1 is Rich Ma, Poor Woman with Oguri Shun.
I am behind in Kdrama this week so I will be catching up this weekend.
Licia~
Congratulations on obtaining your permit.
I saw the link for Rich Man, Poor Woman on Dramacrazy. Looks interesting.
I was thinking of trying out Rich Man, Poor Woman. Mostly because of Shun of course.
Congrats! Now that you’ve got your permit – start driving as soon as possible – how about a weekend ride?
And I also saw the first ep of Rich Man Poor Woman – seems not too bad. It’s the first Japanese drama I saw in more than a year. I am curious how it developes next.
I’ll take adavantage of the Arang delay to watch shows on my ” to watch ” list.
Finished the TDrama Office Girls. Roy Chiu & Alice Ko made for a cute couple.
Almost done w/ CDrama New My Fair Princess
John, hello!
I think with the ending of Big and AGD, I’ll probably try out one of the CDramas you recc’d. As for the JDoramas, too many to chose from!
Shuk~
Office Girls was enjoyable. The first full T Drama series I’ve watched.
Young rich guy agrees to take a entry level job at his father’s department store to prove he’s capable.
He falls for a country girl trying to make it in the big city.
While there’s some conflict, he’s not a jerk, which was refreshing.
Hmm, sounds good.
As I was looking at the pictures of Lee Min Ho in his Goryeo era outfit, I was imagining an annual K-Drama meeting involving K-Drama PDs and writers where they discuss what’s hot and what’s not and plan their work for the year. Apparently, this year the theme is ‘Time travel and its implications for actors’ hairstyles’. It also looks like it was agreed that time travel would be strictly limited to large-scale leaps spanning centuries. Have you noticed that nobody actually travels to, say, the 50s/70s/90s? Also, it would seem that only one Big Damn Hero story per year is allowed, which is kind of sad, because so far they have been pretty well-done (your mileage may vary – this is my humble opinion only
).
Happiest than usual OT to everyone!!!
I thought we would have one this week.
Okay lest start with those who send their regards but won’t be here.
JoAnne unni is on vacation, enjoying the beautiful Main. But she says hi.
cherkell is already at court, she might come later to say hi
About me, well I’m back to kdramas watching AGD, IDID, INR2
I have mixed feelings about the three, but I keep watching.
About jdramas…I’m kind of stuck waiting for subs on the ones I’m watching.
But I’m so happy Yamapi will be back with Shingo in a new drama.
Talking about Yamapi. Hooray for the shower scenes!!!! I just saw the preview for his new video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWiiYW__F4A&feature=player_embedded#!
I’m a happy girl
My SBO (Secret Boy Obsession) is making me download a great a mount of songs, movies, dramas, and tv shows.
Having a SBO is way to dangerous and time consuming. This is totally new for me
btw, my SBO is not Yamapi. Now reading that it kind of sound like he’s.
MY SBO is older and not as hot
woow yamapi is a big boy now! how to download? I googled and downloaded this thing called clipgrabber that wouldn’t listen to me and just added all the stuff it wanted and I got rid of it.
I started downloading a couple of months ago. I used to be afraid of anything too complicated. So I always watch things online. For youtube viedos I got a program for firefox it’s called downloadhelper (I think)
thanks zgz. It’s in one of the firefox add ons right?
I think so
Ahjummabunny
I think there is an easier way out. There is this program called Realplayer, it is a video player basically. You download it for free and install. When you hover over video clips, a link appears in the top – right corner “download this clip”. You can download vids from no matter what site.
Yamapi?! *dead* He is going to have new drama? xDDD When? He looks so much mature now.. Oh Gosh… Loving him!
I think at the end of August. I read about it on LJ, but I can’t find it now.
found it, and I was wrong. We have to wait till October for it
http://aramatheydidnt.livejournal.com/4020735.html
Thanks for the info… <3 <3 <3 but but but i can't believe we have to wait until October for it! T____T
Yamapi will star in a new drama? Will definitely watch out for it!
No spoilers ahead. All possible spoilers are encoded.
Watched: I Need Romance 2.
Status: Getting gooooooddd! I like the initiative and the mystery is becoming more interesting/agonizing. WHY, dude, why!?
Watched: Can Love Become Money
Status: Skimmed ahead, watched last episode and can’t figure out why I can’t quite like it. (Writing is good, and all of that…)
Watched: Big
Status: OMG, getting good. (I know people want the roller coaster, not the ferris wheel)
Watched: I Do I Do
Status: Skimmed odd-numbered episode. I liked the TK scene… but the episode was kind of boring since there was inserted makjang for the sake of it and I knew everything that was coming. Blech. (Characters were a bit OOC too) I rather watch 3 dads and one mom again. Haven’t gotten around to the even one.
Watched: Running Man
Status: Laughed my head off. Soo Hyun was cute.
Oh and J-drama cluster… (Just came out)
Watched: Rich Man, Poor Woman
Status: Will watch until the end. LOVE it. Plus the actors are playing against type, so I’m thoroughly entertained (probably for the wrong reason to choose a drama, but the story is good too) (Has star power)
Watched: Naniwa Shounen Tanteidan
Status: Fluffy fun. Has some bishounen power too. (Koike Teppei) Features Osaka Ben, both fake and real. (You can tell which of the actors came from the area). You can also recognize the shopping center from the first shot… if you’ve watched enough dramas. (There was one drama set completely there.)
Watched: GTO 2012
Status: fun. Not making comparisons to the original. Well-acted though.
Watched: Summer Rescue
Status: Dropped. Love Mukai Osamu. I don’t mind the drama so much, but the tension is off. I find myself not really caring about the characters… and I’m not sure why. The tone is WAFF (Warm and Fuzzy feelings), for those who want to give it a try.
Watched: Sprout
Status: Slice of Life WAFF drama. A little cheesy, but doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s one of those Japanese dramas that are used to test newbie actors/writer/directors. Has romance. Nice summer drama. (Sounds of summer make me feel hot though…)
Watched: Tokkan
Status: Will watch it to the end. Was very, very fun to watch. Tone I would classify as low key/light, but not fluffy (Gets you in the heart) Would say slice of life in a way. The jokes are also kinda twisted and low key (not dark, so much as kinda catches you off guard.) Not laugh out loud.
Watched: Ghost Mama
Status: Has star power. (Nakama Yukie–loved her since Trick 1) If you want a light detective drama that has some good jokes, with laugh out loud and punctuated with a little waff, this would be your drama. Plus, I can’t resist cute kids. High production values too. You can taste the sponsorship in the frames.
Watched: Houkago wa Mystery to Tomo ni
Status: Cheesy drama that doesn’t take itself seriously. I kinda like it for the campiness of the drama. The acting can be a bit uneven, but as I said, it’s campy, so I don’t mind so much. Back burner drama. The description doesn’t quite follow the action.
Watched: Magma
Status: Dropped. Couldn’t get through the first episode. The lead in is unusually long… plus I don’t really like soapbox dramas much.
Watched: 20nen-go no Kimi e
Status: Also has Mukai Osamu… makes me wonder if he’s sleeping at all. Also a soapbox drama. Forces the waff a little too much. Dropped.
Will Watch: Omo ni Naitemasu
Status: Will dump if they go into the melo territory… I don’t mind WAFF though.
Will Watch: Vision
Status: Probably will watch it through because I can’t write mystery for the life of me. =P
Will not watch: Iki mo Dekinai Natsu, Hatsukoi, Beautiful Rain. Blech. “cruel fate” is enough to make me hurl and causes my melo allergy to flare.
–;; Why is it that I’m recognizing more and more locations? Is that pathetic, or just a sign that I’m getting more healthy by watching more dramas? Or is it a sign I haven’t watched enough dramas because I can’t identify all the locations?
I’ve been watching Jdramas too!
sprout: cute and fluffy. I liked it.
GTO: omg! it is awsome. lol Loved the three musketeer. ^^ Can’t believe one is a cop, and one is a teacher.
As for the students in the class that he’s teaching, omg…first impression I had was, wait, they look too clean cut–they don’t look like messed up kids until the story continues on. Yea…then you’re like, yup, they’ve got issues. I will watch this until the end too.
Vision: one where she see’s ghost and works with a detective? She has visions of the future. This isn’t a bad drama so far.
I hope it stays that way.
Summer rescue: First ep wasn’t bad. I didn’t quite get the storyline though. Is it just going to be about his stay at the mountin clinic? I’ll wait until the story is developed more.
Rich man, poor woman: ooooooh first eps isn’t bad at all. I do like the storyline but I just hate for them to start off with a lie between the two leads. I’m hoping that the second ep or third will have that misunderstanding out of the way.
Otherwise, the new bunch of Jdramas is sure pretty good.
Try Ghost Mama too. It’s really funny. If you say you like the others, you’ll like that one too.
A little off your radar since it doesn’t have bishounen power, but Tokkan is also pretty good. Just a bit hard to describe. Has Inuoe Mao from Hana Yori Dango in it.
Rich Man, Poor Woman: More like their relationship starts on a lie rather than a misunderstanding. She did it on purpose. I think that makes it interesting. I won’t mind if they hang it for one more episode. But J-dramas tend to not leave things hanging (less episodes)
Will Watch: Omo ni Naitemasu
Status: Gag drama. If you like Japanese gags, then this will be up your ally. Low production values, but entertaining. Backburner drama for me
Will Watch: Vision
Status: Probably the only drama with a dark tone in the gamut so far. It’s more of a thriller than a mystery drama. Not bad, the first episode is a bit confusing.
*Watched not Will Watch. =P I’m fast.
I’m going to try Sprouts, Rich Man Poor Woman, Gosh Mama, Tokkan, Summer Rescue, and Boys on the Run. I really hope the last one is funny.
The only thing that bothers me with jdramas, is that sometimes I star watching a drama, and towards the end the subtitles stop coming out. I have like 10 jdramas that just need subs in a few eps.
If people were more religious about uploading them to viki, they would get subbed faster…
I don;t think there are any Jdramas in viki. You can find anime, but I don;t think there are dramas there. I’m sure it’s a license issue.
For some dramas LJ or some fan forums are the best place to find the subs
You mean, Rebound, Reset aren’t J-dramas? Or the other J-dramas I helped to either sub, time, edit or otherwise? (I almost completed another drama, Love Game, but I kinda half quit at episode 8 when the ending was so depressing. No one is watching now anyway, so I’m subbing for my own amusement. I’ll probably return to it eventually.)
You can also use viki to kick the original subber’s butt into gear. Subbers have a weird competition thing of being first. I did that for When It’s at Night (k-drama), which I helped upload, time and translate. The original subber thanked me because it made her team move faster and I swore not to use any of their subs. (Which I didn’t.) Helped roughly with 50… either editing, timing, modding, uploading or otherwise. (Also sent suggestions to viki proper to improve the website–but that’s more compulsion on my part.)
There are also Chinese language dramas, Hindi dramas, (and other languages from the sub continent), Thai dramas, Filipino dramas/movies, etc.
But you don’t have to be fluent in the target language to do so. You just need to know how to split and upload the video and get it onto viki. There’s tutorials for that.
Point is, if you are complaining about the speed of subs, you can help with it. You aren’t helpless, even if you don’t know the language. The earlier you do it, the more likely the original subber will try to beat you down.
I’m not complaining, and I have actually helped sub to Spanish a couple of dramas
funny thing I watched the 1st episodes of Iki mo Dekinai Natsu and Hatsukoi and really liked it. i am def going to watch Iki mo Dekinai Natsu
None of the currently airing drama’s have intrigued me enough recently so I went a head with something a little older and after just finishing with a marathon of The Princess’ Man I must say.. boy did I love it!!!!!
From the OTP to the political machinations everything was fun for once! I absolutely loved Se-ryeung’s character and my favorite part has got to be the ongoing conflict with her father, seriously wow!!
This was seriously good and I can’t believe I waited this long for it.
Happy Friday to everyone!!!
Yay, more love for The Princess’ Man! <3 Can't believe that it's close to being a year old. None of the currently airing dramas interest me either :/
Times flies! I just glad I caught it before it was too late!
what else are you watching? I find that I’m very interested in sageuks these days. does that make me a korean nationalist, or a sunday evening harmoni?
I’m in a super sageuk mode as well haha! Within the K-drama landscape, only the princess’ man.. Oh and I did watch Queen in-hyun’s man which was really good aside from the weird finale. But that’s about all I have watched this past year (kdrama)… I know CRAZY right? But for some odd reason nothing is attracting me enough.
I did watch Jin (the original japanese version which very good actually) and I am super excited for Kenshin.
For me in fact I think it’s historical drama mode in general. I re-watched North & South AGAIN and seriously Darcy who? Mr. Thornton is LOVEEEE
… The casting and the acting was spot on!
Probably going to re-watch Jane Eyre and Emma now.. and then Pride and Prejudice (Collin firth version)
More saguek suggestions are much appreciated!!
I marathoned The Princess’ Man in December, and I was so hooked, it’s a wonder I remembered to eat. Sleeping was kept to a minimum. Even now it’s one of my top 5 dramas, and I listen to the OST almost every day.
I really loved when Seung-yoo was in his “dark avenger mode.” The writers took that to a pretty bleak place, and I loved the conflict that it created – for the other characters when they realized he was still alive and what he had become, and also for him when he started to question his own methods and to slowly regain a bit of his lost idealism.
Agreed!! I was in the sleep be damned mode as well!
I precisely loved the fact that they did take him to that bleak place! It gave soooo much more credibility to the stakes which for once really felt like LIFE & DEATH as opposed to life & death, if know you what I mean.
I am sooo in loveee with this series right now! I think the fact that I marathoned it somehow compounded the love I feel right now haha.
Agreed on the awesomeness of the OST!
Oh, I know exactly what you mean. And when a show can take the hero to that super dark place and still make me root for him, I know I’m in love. Not every show can do it – or if they can, the writers/actors/PDs/whoever aren’t willing to try – but whenever it does happen, I’m over the moon with joy.
If you enjoy dark (anti-)heroes and nail-biting suspense, you really should check out Gaksital. It’s every bit as intense as TPM, and it takes the idea of the tortured hero a few steps further.
Thanks Becca_boo! Will certainly check it out as soon as it is completed
I really need to watch The Princess Man soon!
YOU HAVE TO !!!! Right NOW!!
Seriously I randomly started ’cause nothing else was good enough… but I am sooooo thankful I did!!!
Get ready to forget sleep & food and an amazing dose of awesomeness!
I know I should. But streaming it in dramafever took ages (I blame my net book, I need to get it fixed T.T). I wish viki would add it to their TV show list, so at least I can watch it from my iPhone.
Happy Friday and have a great weekend, everyone!
I’m happy because 1) Kim Nam Gil is out of the military as of yesterday!! He’s spending a ten-day vacation before he goes back to work. 2) on the local drama front, things seem to be picking up on Princess and I– at least I hope Jao confesses/proposes before Mikay finds out she’s the princess, since he’s decided that it doesn’t matter if she’s a commoner, because now that Esme’s turned up again, the fact that Jao’s mom tried to have the princess killed when she was a baby is going to come to light soon.
Squee! Kim Nam-gil! I just read it on soompi.
I found out via the soompi twitter. Have been flailing all over Facebook the past couple of days
/dances you all around the OT.
Again, Happy Friday!
I hope everyone’s having a good drama year.
My current drama on play is Big – no other at this time, coz I’m trying to finish A Storm of Swords and reserving later for viewing Gaksital. Big… I’m loving the show more and more with the developments with the characters that I’ve seen so far.
It’s all work stress for me this week, with reports required of me within 2 days, a row with my boss (gah!), and getting sick at work – which make me more excited for the weekend. I’ll be having a catch-up marathon of Big’s last 4 eps and so avoiding the recap threads. >.< That while recovering from stiff neck. XP
Oooh, which part of ASOS are you on? It’s probably the best or at least second best book in series. I also hope you’re enjoying the excellent adventures of Brienne and Jaime a.k.a. one of the most epic roadtrips ever.))
I’m on the part where Jaime just got the swoosh! from the Dothraki – which made my hairs stand on end. I hate that he kept on calling Brienne “wench” but find it funny that he’s getting to like her more and more and is having the sense to try and protect her.
Dany is still at Astapor, Jon in the grips of Ygritte, and Arya’s traveling with the motley crew looking for Beric Dondarion. (Am I wrong to cheer on her and Gendry? I know they’ll part ways later on, but him and Arya seem like young sweethearts in a sageuk to me.)
I’m hoping to be done with it this weekend and move on to A Feast of Crows next week.
Oh noes! I used to hate Jaime, but halfway through the epic roadtrip, I started liking him as a character (not that I think all of his actions are justified – just think he’s wonderfully complex and I love that he *kind of* wants to do the right thing). Brienne, to me, is what Jaime aspires to be – a true knight, whereas Brienne should learn that sometimes you need to learn to prioritize your commitments and some oaths might have to be broken.
Aw, I love Gendry and Arya! <3 Arya is getting a bit too aggressive in the last few books, I'm getting worried.
I never thought I’d like Jaime too. Well, apart from the thing that involves Cersei. I never liked Cersei. I like Tyrion too, cuz of his wit and smartness. I think Jaime and Tyrion were born into the wrong family. I think had Jaime been born a Stark he’d get the proper guidance as a warrior from the very start. I mean, Tywin is a great war tactician and all, but Jaime still spun without good direction until he met Brienne. Although for Tyrion, what molded him into what he is was being born a Lannister.
I’ve heard about Arya joining the faceless men. I’m both disappointed and excited – cuz that means she’ll never meet what remains of her family after Ned was executed, but then again the assassins would make her stronger – develop what she truly is as a female warrior.
I’m so dreading reading about the Red Wedding. I think Rob’s too young to go.
About Jon Snow… are you one of us believers that his true parents are Lyanna and Rhaegar?
Here’s a confession: I don’t care about Jon Snow!
To be honest, I think he only became relatively interesting in the last book. I do think the R+L = Jon theory is correct, but it would have made a perfect twist if he were, in fact, a bastard son of Ned Stark. At this point, it looks like he’s the real Azor Ahai, though. Let’s just hope it doesn’t mean he has to kill Dany (in the way that AA killed his wife). Argh, too many prophecies!!!
I actually have a ton of dramas to catch up on (watched ep 1 of Shut Up: Flower Boy Band and was intrigued, but currently have the other eps on standby). The thing is, I can’t seem to pull myself away from watching MBLAQ yuk it up in variety shows.
Confession: I never GOT Korean variety shows. I’d caught Star King a few times and thought, “Hmmm, Korean Star Search, pass” and Running Man befuddled me. We Got Married? Huh? It’s REALITY and yet not? (Yeah, like American reality shows are any better, but just couldn’t wrap my head around the concept of two ‘real’ people pretending to be married).
Then: MBLAQ Hello Baby. Hello variety for me. Well, variety with MBLAQ (still can’t get into it if those five yahoos aren’t around). My God, why wasn’t I told about these five perfect, handsome, talented, dorky, sweet, totes adorable men when they debuted? WHY? WHY?!? To think, I missed so much time with them! Breaks my sad, sad noona heart. I turned A+ in less than a week zipping through Hello Baby.
So. Freakin’. Adorable.
So, yeah, all my dramas are on the backburner now as I plow through Idol Army, Sesame Player, etc.
On a related, fangirly note: Why is Yang Seungho sooooooooo perfect? Plays the piano and guitar, sings, dances, raps, knits, fixes bikes, assembles computers, can hold his own in at least 3 languages, and can control the zaniness of not 1, not 2, but 4 hyperactive loons? It’s not fair that so much awesomeness should be in one yummy package. I mean, you gotta spread it around a little, right? Oh wait, yeah, there’s one flaw.
I will never be able to convince him to marry me. Hahahaha (and also, sigh).
Have a great weekend, all! Oh, and A+ (and non-A+), after seeing G.O. in a drama, do you want MBLAQ in their own drama, or is it just me?
Um, me. They are the cutest dorky boys in the world and then they come out with these INSANE hot videos. I can’t reconcile the real with the performance, LOL. Seung Ho KNITS? I haven’t seen that yet. But yeah, he’s super capable and I have respect for him. I laugh my BUTT off at Joon. So pretty. So clueless about how other people work, and so completely confused when they don’t respond the way he expects.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I was really happy with I Do, I Do this week. (warning, spoilers ahead)
The look on Tae kung’s face when seeing Ankle on the monitor for the first time was just… so, so precious and heartwarming. I hope Ji-an took a good look at that face and all that love for Ankle that was reflected in it. A better Dad that child could not have… He was glowing!
I’m confident that Ji-An will make the right position with regards to her job. Of course, she could go for the Noble Idiot solution, but somehow I don’t see her like that – rather that she will forge straight ahead as she always has. That’s what has defined her in this show after all.
As for Tae Kang – I’m sure he’ll do the right thing as well. If he goes to America (which I’m doubtful about), it’ll be only for a super-short time and with all kinds of provisions in place (which we’ve already seen in ep 12). I really, really liked what we saw of him in ep 11 and ep 12′s episodes in terms of speaking up whenever they were trying to make him the “only” designer of the shoes, especially when he walked out of Nari and told her clearly that he didn’t like being used that way.
My hope is that Tae Kang and Ji-An will talk about the work issues they have with each other, and together quit and set up their own shoe business with Dad in tow.
(I keep wondering about Ji-An’s lost shoe design as well. If it will pop up again.)
As for Nari, what a boring, pathetic person. Things haven’t changed 20 years? Yeah, maybe not but you can change them. Especially with the history of her own mother, you’d think she’d stand up a change, but no. She’s got no brains, no guts… and funnily, I would have thought that Ji-An’s independent way of being would have been what made Nari admire her in the first place. Ji-An has been acting true to herself all along, Nari, meanwhile, seems to have forgotten that she admired this woman once, presumably for her guts. Ah well.
I don’t really get the whole “you quit or Tae Kang and his Dad and you will all end up fired”. What’s the logic behind this? Even if Ji-An quit, Tae Kang would still be the child’s father and the secret is still bound to come out. Why would it be any less scandalous and “less tarnishing” for the company image if Ji-An didn’t work there anymore? A baby isn’t erasable. He’d still be the one-night stand Dad, unmarried to the mother of his child….
Oh, and Tae Kang sneaking kisses at work… hahaha! So funny!
I’ve been waiting since the second week for Tae Kang and Ji-An to quit and set their own business with dad.
I hope that happens soon
Me too! Why stick around with flaky Nari and evil Madame Jang…. they can just take off, the three of them (and maybe take that one other team member with her, you know the one that’s a mom).
They can do a kids’ shoes business. Or any shoes, it doesn’t matter, they don’t need those other losers!
*with them
Tae-kang is the most adorable proud papa. I did a lot of squeeing when he was sneaking kisses and finding ways to make things easier for Ji-an, and then the look on his face when he saw Ankle for the first time reduced me to a puddle of goo. *melts again just thinking about it*
I’ve been hoping they’d start their own company, too. I remember a couple episodes back, Tae-kang even thought of the idea and got all starry-eyed (yes, that was adorable, too). It would make my day if that turns out to be more than a throw-away bit.
** I Do, I Do SPOILERS**
Yeah, so much win this week! I’m really glad that the writers decided to tackle these issues head on, instead of avoiding them. All the conservative business practices need to be addressed. (Not that there’s anything wrong with being conservative.) But seriously, firing your best designer because she’s pregnant is not only foolish, it goes against logic – you’ll end up losing as well.
And you’re right about Nari – I’ve been yelling at that girl to stand up for herself this entire drama, and to be honest, I’m hoarse. And tired. Do what you want, Nari.
Did anyone else watch the Nari crying scene and go “why is this here?” 2-3 episodes ago, maybe. But now, I’m like, “why is she still crying? Did she JUST realize that she didn’t have a chance with him?”
And Tae Kang – why so cute?
I guess in some ways Nari is a badly developed character – like they couldn’t decide what angle to focus on. Her I-want-to-be-the-CEO-at-all-costs part or the Tae-kang-is-meant-for-me bit. She has neither been particularly evil nor particularly love smitten (you know, the scheming love rival you get in so many dramas), there have just been hints of both but on the whole Nari just doesn’t amount to much. In particular because we don’t know much of her backstory (with her mother, and why she adored Ji-Na when she was still in the US).
She just falls flat and, at this point, bores me. She isn’t threatening really – and I’m sure Ji-An feels that too. To challenge Ji-An by backstabbing (the shoes) or threatening dismissal is just not going to turn out well, because Ji-An is such a strong character. (Which is exactly why I love her! For once a drama heroine that goes Are you kidding me? in her actions – the way sooo many threats/manipulative schemes/rumours/etc. should have been countered in countless k-dramas!)
)
I think the actor playing NaRi hasn’t the skill or experience to bring complexity to her role. A better actor could have done more. I don’t think she is bad, she just doesn’t add anything that is not written in the dialogue.
I am with you on JA, TK and TK’s dad leaving the company and setting up their own wee boutique shoe factory. Though that might look like JA throwing away her years of dedication to the company, at least on her own, there’ll be no more threats and compromising.
And what’s with ‘going to America’ with Korean dramas? Shoes… why not Europe, where really nice shoe designs come from? I don’t think America is the centre of shoe design.
Hahaha!
Send them to Europe indeed, we’ll happily have them, especially the pretty flower boys.
Guess it must be ‘the land of dreams’.
At least Eun-chan from Coffee Prince was sent to Italy to become a barista. Trying to think of other dramas now with other destinations…
I was one of those that thought I missed some no more ot’s message because I don’t twitter or whatever else. I just finished iris and sign. I’m watching ghost but I’m very close to throwing it away. I’m laughing at how nothing is happening and feeling really frustrated. Is anyone watching the go bong shil drama? I love it! I also think I want to move to Itaewon. Well I have to check if there are indian restaurants first and then I’ll move there.
I’m also going to start dong yi and athena. Yesterday I spent about 2 hours looking at csw cf ads. Oh and is Gakistal any good?
I hope you’re all enjoying your weekend!
Hi, ahjummabunny!
Gaksital is awesome There were a couple of slow weeks mixed in there, but it’s in full gear now and blowing me away. I find the characters – particularly Kang-to and Shunji – fascinating and deliciously dark. It hits on all the right notes for me, and I’m addicted. It’s my new crack drama.
I’ve been wondering about Go Bong Shil – it’s a family drama, isn’t it? What’s it like?
It’s quite unlike and very like your typical family drama. Have you seen weeds? similar set up except our widow is older and she doesn’t really have two children to take care of. It has the lovely kdrama cinderella theme lurking and oodles of make shift family. One of the major story lines is about an lgbt group of friends who do business in itaewon.
okay I’ll my weekend watch list is gakistal, athena, dong yi.
Hi ahjummabunny!
Hope you’ve been well. Just wanted to let you know that my city has this awesome supermarket that stocks stuff from all over the world and they have soju! I was so excited when I found out that my new-found alcoholic love affair will not be nipped in the bud:)
Have a splendid weekend!
ha ha! ah the globalization of the world in person! I’m glad you were able to find your soju close to home. konbae!
Konbae! I am in good company on DB – what more globalized space can you find?:)
There are definitely Indian restaurants in Itaewon — I’ve heard there are some great buffets
I’ve only recently started spending time in Itaewon (started doing Muay Thai at a martial arts studio in the neighborhood), but I’m liking it more and more. I’ve met some really, really nice people (expats from all over), and the place has a really vibrant, diverse feel.
Oh, and I hope you enjoy Athena. CSW is intense and beautiful (naturally), but the hero is… well… kinda dim. (You’ll see what I mean.) Gets a little frustrating after a while. (Overall, though, I thoroughly enjoyed the drama.)
Sethe! you bring good news! I’ve resolved to never live more than 20 minutes away from chinese (authentic) or indian food. In the drama itaewon residents really love kebabs apparently one of the characters gets a job at a turkish restuarant. I saw a few episodes of athena when it was airing but I thought there was back story I was missing from iris so I didn’t watch the series. I’m glad to be wrong about that.
Hey ahjummabunny!
How did your meeting go last week?
Hi ahjummabunny! Hope you’re having a good weekend! ^_^
Happy OT all! ^_^
Hope everyone is doing well!
Kdramas: I’ve come to a blah….Just can’t watch Kdramas anymore. I’ve just been jumping around with K/J movies and Jdramas. Most of them are not romance. haha! I think I may be sick of watching rom-com/melodrama. Is there such a thing as that?
maybe you had an overdose of romance.
if you wanna return to kdramas, haven’t you heard of gaksital??? it’s awesome!!!!! i think you should watch it
ghost it’s interesting too and both have like 5% of romantic dose
Yup, there is. I had it several months ago. Hoped I was free of an addiction, but alas, it is back in full force.
Same here – I was pretty sure I was done. Then summer came.
Have you tried Gaksital yet? It’s definitely not blah.
Definitely would recommend Gaksital as well!
Its Friday, the 13th. So use two condoms tonight.
LOL
Are you superstitious?
Or very lucky maybe? ;P
Am I dead? Because I think last night’s Gaksital killed me. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: these people need therapy! Still, I wouldn’t have it any other way: this show is precisely my kind of dark, twisted, and fist-pumping. Is it Wednesday yet?
On a less twisted note (and maybe a little SPOILERY), who wants to join me for a happy-dance in celebration of the fact that Tae-kang FINALLY KNOWS?! I would have preferred to get to this place much faster, but if we’re looking at the glass as half-full, I do like that by the time she tells him, they’ve already built a relationship and fallen for each other (well, he has – I’m still not sure if she loves him yet or if she just likes him), so neither will ever wonder if they’re just together because of the baby. Not that that wouldn’t have been fascinating territory… *sigh* what could have been…. (SPOILER ENDED) IDID isn’t going to make it onto my list of all time favorites, but Tae-kang might end up being one of my favorite heroes. He’s just so adorable and earnest! Every time he comes onscreen, I want to give him a bear hug.
Still watching AGD, but I’m not enjoying it as much as I did in the beginning, and the most recent episode actually annoyed me. Am I the only one who thinks that noble idiocy is out of character for selfish Do-jin? I hope it gets better. If a show is going to be this loosely plotted, it should at least make up for it with a ton of cute.
Here’s something I’ve been wondering about this week, what with the casting news about the Hana Kimi remake: dramaland is filled with cross-dressing girls, but why don’t we ever see a guy forced to masquerade as a girl? I know it’s been done in episodes here and there, and to varying degrees (Hyun Bin in a bra was brilliant!), but I’ve never heard of a whole show about it. I wonder if it’s because a cross-dressing boy is considered weirder (or possibly ickier) or if cross-dressing girls are just funnier. What do you guys think?
So that’s what’s on my mind. Now seriously, is it Wednesday yet?
I am happy Tae-kang knows. I’m thrilled she told him, rather than TK finding out accidentally (even if the moment of the big reveal wasn’t planned).
I certainly don’t love everything about I Do, I Do but I really, really appreciate the single-mom/strong, independent woman message that the drama has put out there.
That’s why I’m confident that Ji-An will do the right thing – forge ahead, straight on “like a missile” – in response Nari threatening to fire her if she doesn’t resign first.
Re Hana Kimi: trying to think of a guy cross dressing… I can’t think of dramas that have that as their main plot device, but there have certainly been mangas. The Korean My Heart Is Beating is one that is entirely based on this premise. I didn’t read it in ages – the story of a boy who loves swimsuits just seemed too much tilted towards weird fetishes, but it’s actually a wonderful, wonderful webcomic: http://www.webtoonlive.com/description/My+Heart+is+Beating/
So I just finished replying to your comment, then I come back and here you are! Kind of funny.
I agree with what you said about Ji-an, I have a little trouble connecting with her so I don’t really love her, but I do love how strong she is, not only when compared to most kdrama heroines but also as a woman.
Hm… manga isn’t usually my thing, so I don’t know if I’ll check it out, but thanks for letting me know.
Tae Kang should’ve known half a series ago, IMHO. But better late than never, right?
My sentiments exactly. Of course, better on time or even early than late, but who’s quibbling?
Cross-dressing men can be funny if done right. American films that have done well: Ladybugs (for the younger crowd) and Sorority Boys.
I would definitely watch – maybe Song Joong-Ki could be the lead??
Hello Everybody!
Just like many watchers I was slightly traumatised with the development in the recent AGD episodes. Hope it won’t last. I don’n want a cheap melo and noble idiocy. If somebody is going to split up, then ok, but give me some reasonable reasons. Anyway, Jung Rok and Min Sook rock. Love this couple, I hope they realize they love each other too and we’ll get to see why such a smart woman as MS actually married JR, the shameless flirt of shameless flirts.
Ghost is good. Mad Cow is just brilliant. SJS is meh, but at least it is not his worst role. A Thousand Years of Love, anybody?
I Need Romance 2012 surprised me a little, but I like it no matter what. I’ve been a Lee Jin Wook fan all along, now I have also discovered Jung Yoomi’s charm. Quirky – that’s what tiggers like best.
And this week has been abundant in Can Love Become Money episodes – two of them at once! I cannot help but love the witty dialogues and the main character. I cannot however bring myself to watch Vampire Prosecutor. Maybe autumn will be a better season for that?
Have a lovely weekend!
I’m with you on AGD. Don’t know why they make such a big drama from the existence of Colin…
I’m also disappointed with Mae Ri, I thought she and her relationship to Yoon oppa would change and advance after the talk they had a couple of episodes ago… but nothing… I now want to know more about MS and JR… MS is starting to be my favourite character
Me Ahri makes me impatient. If I could get rid of one character in this drama that would be definitely her. At first she was spunky and funny, then she became less funny, now she’s plain annoying. I would be fine with M&Y relationship if she moved on a little. But all she does is whinig and crying. Recently I realized why I don’t buy that relationship (beside the age gap – it does bother me a little) – those two were never shown having a normal conversation, like about any matter, except for the one about Meahri’s future. They seem to have only Tae San in common.
Min Sook is a character I fully approve of.
“They seem to have only Tae San in common.”
That… and her kindergarten years
Kim Soo Hyun!!! What a nice surprise.
I’m hating Ghost more and more.
seriously, everytime the protagonists solve something they realize they’re one step behind AGAIN.
my god will the writers of this drama never stop with the “oh yes we figured it out OH GOD I JUST REALIZED WE’RE TOO LATE” crap? every time they figure out something a second later they’re figuring out a new problem.
seriously, stop it!
lol!
mic. so is my favorite character because he seemed to use his brain and I thought he would elevate the team but instead his brain has slowed down. I don’t understand why gi young is suddenly woo hyun? isn’t ki young supposed to have enough brains to elude a team of cyber police for years and hack chongwadae? I understand he’s supposed to be pretending to be woo hyun I just miss the old days when he would do illegal things to get the answers. Man where did awesome cases like the high school case or the phantom of magician’s dream cases. Man those had me seriously spooked but still they are awesome! I’m really upset about ghost!
Looking at the thread it seems cupcakes are getting as much attention aas dramas this week.
Wonder what cupcake you’d pair with what drama.
I’d go for Mocha Cupcakes with Espresso Buttercream while watching IDID/AGD.
I’m not sure whether Gaksital will match any cupcakes.
but I’ll go with Dark Chocolate Cupcake with smooth White Buttercream Bumps, dipped in Dark Chocolate Ganache.
For Big, I’d go for a red velvet with cream cheese – KKJ/YS is red sexy with just enough sweetness to temper it.
For IDID, I would use yellow cake mix with chocolate and butterscotch chips, all those little kisses just a little surprising and happy when you find them. Maybe dark chocolate frosting for the sizzing chemistry between the leads…
For AGD, I’d mix different cake batters top it off with ketchup because, WTH is happening?!
AGD ketchup cupcakes – LOL. That’s so disturbingly appropriate.
I think they should have sprinkles, too, because that show is all about the shiny, sparkly, pretty-pretty things that distract you from it’s flaws.
OK, someone needs to make this into a drama ASAP.
I need to see Kim Sun Ah and Lee Ki Woo play battling lawyers. Either Wang Ji Hye (Protect the Boss) or Uee as the ‘Other Woman’. Choi Ran would be a great ‘Baddie’.
Hell, if we have to go Hong Sister Style, make them have once been lovers in a past life that swear to ‘find each other again.’ Yet when they first met in this life they absolutely hate each other. Thus ensues the hijinx and sexy smoldering.
Wow, I love the idea! I’m surprised more Asian dramas haven’t gone for the whole past lovers reuniting in the present angle. I think it would be refreshing to see a young lead actress for a change though since it seems like producers are wary of taking a chance on new talent. Aside from the Han Hyo Joos, Moon Chae Wons, and Shin Se Kyungs, I can’t really think of many lead actresses born around or after ’85.
who are the 85ers?
I think Han Hyo Joo is an ’85er and Moon Chae Won is an ’86er… Shin Se Kyung is much younger. I’m so glad that there are roles being written for talented actresses like Kim Sun Ah but I can’t help but wonder where the next generation of star actresses is.
I think the young women might want to play the light roles for just a while longer as a way to emphasize their youth. Most of them have been playing 25 since they were 20 so they need to get older before they can lie about their age.
No, Hyo Joo is 87ers as far as the wiki info goes. MCW is indeed 1986ers and SSK, though hard to believe is a 1990ers just like Park Shin Hye, Kang So Ra, and Park Bo Young.
Whoops, forgot Shin Min Ah… didn’t realize she was so young!
your brains are awesome! ( incidentally one way of translating what my favorite pojangmacha ajumma said to me after I told her I learned to order from watching kdrama last weekend.) I love the idea of kim sun ah and lee ki woo. I don’t see him with the ji sung type energy that is required ( he’s very tall) but anything can happen right!? I see it more like the battling bickerers in can’t lose. Man how can we get this into the ear of someone influential!!!!!
Ha! Wanna hear what I want Gong Yoo’s, Lee Seung-gi’s and Cha Seung-won’s roles to be?
Is anyone at all watching the morning drama Welcome Rain to My Life? I desperately need to know why Dan Bi and Seung Joo aren’t together and why she was trying to marry Gyu Won in the first place… gah, I hate not knowing Korean!
is the show available with chinese, japanese, or vietnamese subs?
Yes, it’s subbed in Chinese on 56.com (I can include the link if you’d like). Episode 71 just aired and I’m tearing my hair out trying to figure out what’s going on :/ Unfortunately, I love Shim Hyung Tak too much to quit.
yes please place the link.
not really for me, but I’m sure there are some people who speak those languages and can help with that. I’ll call in my chinese posse.
My gosh, thank you so much! Here’s the link:
http://www.56.com/u72/v_Njg5NzQ1NDk.html
Seung Joo’s father killed Dan Bi’s father. That’s how SJ’s mother was able to have the restaurant business all these years as a payment from the Chairman Lee.
DB and Gyu Won made an arrangement to get marries so she can prevent (don’t know how..due to my limited Korean) the beach property being handed over to Chairman Lee.
FYI, Dan Bi means sweet rain.
Wow, I definitely wasn’t expecting that! So this means that Dan Bi is Gyu Won’s mom’s daughter, right? Is Gyu Won himself adopted? Also, how does Dan Bi really feel about Gyu Won? It seems like she still loves Seung Joo and he loves her… I hope they can overcome what’s driving them apart.
Thank you so very much for replying!
DB and SJ still love each other but…. I think there will be a revelation that SJ father was not really the killer but confessed to being so to give SJ the surgery he needed. There was this guy in the hospital who knows the real story but can’t or won’t tell the story due to his hysteric fit when Db and SJ separately approached him. DB is the doctor’s (Sunny) daughter.. not sure if GW is the real brother or adopted.
Not sure if you caught it, but the wife caused the para-sail accident to kill Db’s dad to obtain his estate, and Chairman Lee found out. Of course he blackmailed her to just give up the land.
If I see more develop, I will try to post it here
Amazing how everything makes sense now… I’m guessing Gyu Won will turn out to be adopted to prop up the love square. Did he get sick in 70-71 because he found out about SJ-DB or about his mom being Sunny? I’m rooting for SJ-DB like I haven’t rooted for a Kcouple in a while. Once again, thanks for your help!
Happy Friday the 13th everyone!
Still enjoying Once Upon a Time in Saengchori. I’m at the part where they introduced the young arrogant chaebol kid who’s Pak Kyu’s son. He and Na Young are cute together, but I keep on wanting her to beat him up, because he really needs to be taken down a few notches. Is that weird?
I love that drama. Well it’s a pity that that role was just a short cameo by Yoon Shi Yoon, with a Baker King/Secret Garden parody
It would have been nice to see a little bit more of development on that direction.
But the main story of the drama are the mysteries both the murder and at the village, Min Sung’s problem, and the love story
There is so much going on in that drama, that is not surprise that at the end there were some threads that were never properly addressed.
LOL@ Once Upon A Time In Saengchori
I really enjoyed that show.
It seemed more realistic as far as budget.
I’ve become sort-of ambivalent towards the dramas lately that portray everyone as having fantastic wardrobes/cars/jobs and living in huge, modern houses/apartments…. *sigh* so predictable.
Is anyone watching GOLDEN HOUR. I stumbled across it this week and enjoyed it. I’ve never seen a male lead played as so lacking in skill. I eager to see him grow.
I just started watching it; the atypical main character has captured my interest. I hope this drama really focuses on the characters because they seem really interesting.
Hi everyone.I wanted to ask this yesterday but gave up and went to bed at 2am.
The word is Golden Time is good and I’ll watch it this weekend.
The thing is because of it I’ve downloaded The White Towers because I’ve heard it mentioned so many times in relation to medical dramas quality. So…why do you like it?And is it deserving of it’s reputation?
I have seen Surgeon Bong Dal Hee,Ob /Gyn and Brain.I like the first 2.The last not so much. But only because the female lead was a total disgrace to female interns everywhere. Her clinical skills were worse than a 2nd year student.
So… The White Towers anyone? Thank you. Have a great weekend.I am going to be watching Sunny Happiness as it’s the first weekend free since mid June.Yay. It’s fantastic just having nothing to do except watching a TW and Golden Time. Not watched AGD and IDID. If anyone is free you all should marathon the last 3 weeks of Standby because it’s been pretty adorable and funny. I’ve cracked up a few times and all the lovelines are getting crossed.
White Tower, amongst other things, inspired me to be a doctor. I’m now in my 3rd year of medical school and I can’t recommend this drama enough. It’s unbelievably powerful and blows all other dramas out of the water imho.
Oh… I had replied. Sorry for checking so late.
Thanks both of you. Better start TWT next week. Holidays starting time for a drama session.
@Ahjummabuddy. I didn’t rank Ob/Gyn with SBDH I just watched both. Surgeon BDH made my family drag out the textbooks that hasn’t seen light of day since Uni days.
Ob/gyn to me was just a cry fest.
Typos. I mean someone from OT actually replied
you should see the uselessness that was han hye jin’s character in syndrome. I never saw less actual work from interns before. I think I’m spoiled by surgeon bong dal hee. I see you’ve ranked obgyn with bdh I was iffy about it before.
Ah standby is still on standby for me but why I’m not sure thanks for reminding me of it.
yay, weekend!!! I never really paid it too much attention before, but from reading above I can assume that a new OT starts every Friday morn? just want to make sure since wow there are a lot of posts already! mmm, i love the dramalove.
SO. this week I finished Chuno FINALLY. I was really ready for it to be over by the end. Its kind of telling that I kept thinking of the characters by their actor’s name instead! While it was fun, and I don’t regret seeing it, I was never super engrossed in it. I ended up rather disliking Haewon/UnNyun and feeling like I stopped buying into her with Song Tae Ha after she found out Dae Gil was alive after all. The couple I ended up squeeing at the most was the two slaves, when he went to rescue her and then she sent him back to help fight! It makes me want to know about what really happened during that time since I don’t know and couldn’t tell the fiction from the history. I thought I had read somewhere in the recaps it supposed to be something like that. ANYWAY, loved the scenery, the music (tho it did get repetitive), and Han Jung Soo. And I really did love at the end how Dae Gil and Tae Ha become sort of friends. I coulda watched more bromance there and pretend there was no girl for them to fight over. SIGH. meh. moving on!!!:)
I can’t decide what to start next: The Return of Iljimae? Sandglass? Midas? one of the current ones? So many dramas, so little time!!
If you really like melo, Sandglass
Return of Iljimae was good. Personally it took me a little bit to get into the story.
Forget about Midas, not even go there, or you’ll ask for your time back at the end of it.
About OT, is the Friday staple, we all wait all week for.
bah, i hate finding out a drama with a somewhat interesting premise and actors i want to see a little more of is reported a dud. oh well, plenty of fish in the sea! I’ve been busy this weekend so I haven’t started anything new yet, while i like them, i’m not feeling a melo right now so… i suppose i’ll end up reporting back next Friday.
thanks for the tips!
I liked a lot of midas. I wish there was more character story versus story story. Sandglass for me is a hard watch but it has really good acting. If you’re interested in a thriller and haven’t seen it a man’s story is the tops. chego! chego!
where can i find that show?!?!?! a man’s story isn’t on dramafever and so far, i’ve only been watching shows on there after switching from hulu. oh and two cases of using dramacrazy.net. i have this sense there are untapped resources i am as of yet unaware of….
it looks quite like it’s only available in segments. Dramacrazy, mysoju etc. As far as untapped resources go there is viki: home of the best subbing teams in the world, in every many languages and in real time.
Hi folks!!!
and man am I happy that Arang will take a little longer to start… my time is so jam-packed with dramas I was wondering if I’d have to feed myself through IV so that I can continue watching dramas without interruption…j/k…
but it is really a busy summer with good dramas to catch up on and lots of sun filled activities to participate in so I can lose my whiter than chalk skin color.
Hi everyone!
I was waiting for OT yesterday, but fell asleep in the end. Now its Saturday here so I wish all a happy Saturday!
I have been watching Big but didn’t get to watch the last 2eps.. I managed to read only the recaps. I suppose it will be so till the end of the drama.
Thankfully, I have Hello My Teacher in my laptop which I can watch whenever I miss Gong Yoo! I am only 3 eps into it and I’m hooked!
I just finished Hello My Teacher and it is the most perfect drama I’ve seen yet
hi there everyone! Anyone here watching or have watched A wife’s Credentials? Well I would like to recommend it to everyone though its not eye-candy but it is an amazing drama. I swear you will not regret it. Thought its just so sad that until now only episode 5 has been subbed. I’m requesting all the subbers to please sub this drama. I cant help myself I have already watched until ep 8 raw. Eventhough I dont understand korean. I have to watch it again when the subs are up.
mvibo actually acquired jtbc’s dramas which is great. I really want to see happy end but it’s a paid subscription. I was thinking that I could pay for the month and figure out a way to share the videos. But that might not work at all but I may be able to share the account with several computers. They don’t have all the episodes yet so there is still time for me to figure out how to share it.
I wish, just this once, that one of you will recap Golden Time. I perfectly aware that medical drama is not cup of tea of most viewers, but this one is so different and unique and well written and great executed. I’m kind of tired to read only things that related to idols or studs or mix of both. I really need a little more.
Lee Sun Gyun even with his weird haircut still AWESOME actor. Any volunteer? Is someone brave enough for this challenge?
OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH I find no enjoyment whatsoever lately!
Big: my eyes glaze. And this is from reading the recaps.
AGD: the Noble Idiocy, the Tears and the Separation kill half of my love for the main couple.
Thai lakorns: I have currently lost all interest
Historical romance books: whenever I read a new one, I keep thinking: ‘Julie Garwood in her olden days has done better’
Paranormal romance books: same as above, just substitute Julie Garwood’s name with another big name in the genre
Make up world: what else to buy? what else to try? what new fad is happening?
I’m so sad honestly. They are my escape methods but I think I have to pull back a little. Okay, maybe a lot. I really wonder how JB & GF perseveres with the obligations from running DB. No matter how they feel, no matter how a drama has turned into a dancing bear, they still have to write recaps. #$%#@^^@#$!@#$ Goodbye for now, see you guys in a month’s time or so.
