Ryu Soo-young cast as middle brother in new weekend drama

Seo In-gook has a new hyung: Ryu Soo-young has been cast in the upcoming drama Rascal Sons as the second brother of three sons, where Seo plays the maknae. Huh. You’d think he’d gotten his fill of being the middle bro in a weekend family show after 58 episodes of Ojakkyo Brothers… but hey, who’s to say you can’t keep doing what you’re good at?

At least it’ll be a different type of character for Ryu, who’s gotten used to playing urbane professionals; he was the charming history professor in My Princess and the rising newscaster in Ojakkyo. In this drama, he’s taking on the role of a early-thirtysomething martial-arts-fantasy novelist with a creative soul and a free spirit. He doesn’t care about what others thing of him, which sometimes translates into offbeat behavior and an unrealistic perspective. Cute. I so much prefer Ryu being light-hearted and charming over brooding and angsty.

He also falls in love with his friend’s girlfriend, which, uh-oh. The friend will be played by Kim Young-hoon, who had a brief but notable role in Gaksital as the comrade who goes after Kang-to in the Angel Club disguised as a waiter, [SPOILER?] who then sacrifices himself to save the hero’s life. Aw. Already I feel bad for him; doesn’t giving up your life for your nation merit some happiness in your next (drama) life?

Being a weekend family show means it’ll come with the usual large family at its center, lots of side characters and multiple storylines. We can expect marriage and family ties to figure largely in any show of this kind, but even so it seems this drama will have a particular emphasis on “examining the meaning of marriage and divorce.”

Rascal Sons is directed by Kim Kyung-hee of Gloria and written by Kim Ji-soo of Scarlet Letter. The drama replaces God of War on MBC weekends, and will premiere in mid-September.

Are you referencing his role in Bad Couple? I loved watchng this actor in Ojagkyo Brothers, and I think it will be hard for me to view him in a different role in a similar drama.

Ryu Soo-young is one of my favorite South Korean actors. I totally LOVED him in OB and I LOVED his chemistry with his female co-star, they were my favorite couple in that show. I kept wishing that they would have more screen time together *Sigh!*
I LOVED his comedic timing in OB as well and I LOVED him also in Bad Couple. I just really love his acting. (I haven't seen all the episodes of "My Princess" yet).

Hi Lizzie,

They did have a lot of chemistry, didn't they? Interestingly enough, they apparently didn't like doing the lovey-dovey scenes. They liked the other types of scenes better.

I liked him in My Princess ans loved him in Ojakgyo Brothers. He's one of the best-dressed Korean actors--yummy in anything (or barely anything). :)

His wardrobe in OB was fantastic, and he did it justice.

I've watched several of his dramas (OB, Bad Couple, My Princess), and I'm currently recapping one of his older shows (18 vs 29 from 2005).

He has firmly established himself as a solid performer.
Whether the show itself was fantastic or mediocre, his acting abilities are wonderful to see, and, let's face it, I sooo want to run my fingers through all that hair. ;-)

My interest in this drama just increased tenfold thanks to this! Ryu was so charming I'm Ojakgyo Brothers; I watched for Joo Won and UEE but fell for the chemistry between Ryu and his co stars

Oh, I'm in. I love love love him. I'm hoping the friend's girlfriend is just a red herring and that he falls in love with someone else instead.

The more I look at this man the more good looking he becomes. It's mind boggling. Depending on the episodes I might watch.

Ryu in another family show?
Well, he must have done something really good on Ojakky Brother - can't tell, cuz I don't feel like watching this kind of drama.
You know, I almost watched it, but UEE gives me the creeps (don't ask), so... nope.
But now I feel like trying, even if my interest is focused only on the thoughts of seeing Ryu's sparkling-white-breathtaking smile.
*drools*

Ryu Soo-young, when he smiles... his whole face smiles :)
Even when he played the villain in "Save The Last Dance... " I couldn't help but like that handsome face more, and more every time he smiled. He is definitely at his pretty best when playing in a romantic comedy.

I have not seen OB, so I kept scratching my head thinking, "why oh why does he look familier?" But I just finished watching "Save the Last Dance" and despite his murderous ways, I really wanted him to win something (at least in the beginning; and not the girl he wanted because she was milktoast--wait wasn't she milktoast again in Equator Man?). Anyway, he is lovely. Anyone, who could still look attractive with the awful hairstyle they gave him in Save the Last Dance . . . has a gift.

Wonder who Han Hye Rin will be paired up with. She seems a little young for Ryu Soo Young but I'm not sure if Seo In Gook will actually have a romantic storyline in this drama.

Annie~

Han Hye Rin is in this? I saw her in New Tales of the Gisaeng. She was a clothes horse in that drama.

I've been looking forward to see her in another drama.

I love him since Bad couple. I watched OB because of him and he and his partner were the best couple in that drama. I wish he will take a lead role. I doubt he lacks offers.

I love him in OB, he & his co star is my favorite couple. And his hands are beautiful. I keep staring at his hands especially at the scene in which he gives the wedding ring back to his OB wife. >.<

Have only seen Ryu Soo-young in "My Princess", but he was very likeable in that.

While KTH and SSH were great fun as the lead couple, the whole male ego/competition btwn SSH's and Ryu's characters was also quite fun/entertaining.

I will never forget Ryu Soo-young in 'Seoul 1945'. He was beyond good. It is one of my favorite dramas and he is the reason why.

Bashful82 you are right about the dimples. That's why Oh Ji Ho is my number one man..........................

Yay! Ryu Soo-young is back!

I was waiting for his next drama or movie after Ojakgyo Brothers. He was one of the better actors in OB.

His scenes in My Princess were brief but entertaining and he gave off smart vibes. Much better than Kim Tae-hee, Song Seung-hun and Park Ye-jin were.

Good to see him again.
