Scenes from campus rom-com To the Beautiful You

SBS’s youth rom-com To the Beautiful You (aka another Hana Kimi remake) kicks off next week, and above are the latest posters from the show, featuring our lead couple Min-ho and Sulli, as well as the doomed-to-fail (I assume) secondary pairing of Sulli with Lee Hyun-woo.

My anticipation for this show is pretty evenly divided down the middle: interest versus dismay, hope versus cynicism. And that’s probably mostly due to the production team: PD Jeon Ki-sang did Boys Before Flowers (which was a hit despite the terrible directing) and writer Lee Young-chul wrote the High Kick series (which brimmed with heart and cute relationships). The actors in this bunch include a lot of idols, which tends to make lots of viewers wary, particularly when they’re in the leading roles. But there are enough more-experienced castmates in supporting roles, so it’s not a total crap shoot.

Plotwise, I feel like you can basically tell the whole story in six pictures:

There! Done!

Oh wait, you mean you want more? Okay, fine. So the awesome genius high jumper, Tae-joon (Min-ho) suffers some kind of incident, right? And now he doesn’t jump anymore. And the heroine was sad.

Heroine Jae-hee (Sulli) decides, I KNOW! I’ll pretend to be a dude, go to his school, and cure his psychological trauma by taking my stalkerism to a more intimate level. Because you know, that works.

So she does, meeting all the guys at her new boys’ high school in the process. Also some girl.

One day she meets a dog. The animal, I mean. Not a value judgment! He happens to come with an owner, our very own depressed genius athlete Tae-joon.

I’m guessing that meeting doesn’t exactly get off on the right foot, because I’ve seen this story before in every other drama. But there’s this other student at school, whose terrible haircut must mean he has an awesome personality. (Because we know Lee Hyun-woo’s gonna rock it, don’t we?) This is Eun-gyul, who seems pretty friendly.

And yet, the encounter leaves him scratching his head. There’s something about that girl… I mean guy! Guy! There’s something about that guy! Wait… does my Freudian slip know something I don’t?

Eun-gyul is pretty good at soccer. Maybe he’s not a genius like the hero, but at least he can multi-task!

…or maybe not.

Is she taking cross-dressing-infiltration tips from the girl-dude of K-Pop Ultimate Survival? ‘Cause… that didn’t work out so well there, although I suppose she got her man eventually. Yet, inasmuch as people generally don’t appreciate being stripped in public, Jae-hee’s integration as the new kid in school does not get off on the right foot.

Hot bod alert! Wait, this is a high school drama, right? Must check to see if I should feel guilty about this…

Oh phew, Seo Joon-young is 25. Ogling sanctioned. As you were.

He plays Seung-ri, the head of his dorm who’s determined to make his dorm first place. What, like Gryffindor? Then again, if that requires activities like painting shirtless, by all means do what you must.

Enter the rival. Hanna (Kim Ji-won) is a rhythmic gymnast, which seems appropriate since Korea’s just about obsessed with that these days. Hero Tae-joon has been her friendly oppa since early childhood and they’re both repped by the same sports agency. She’s got it all: looks, wealth, background, talent…. except one thing. She doesn’t get to shack up with her crush like some enterprising (some might call fanatical) young ladies, and you know what they say: presence makes the heart grow fonder. Oh wait, that’s not a thing. It should be.

But sad. Someone dies! That’s not a fun way to end this post about a hilarious school romance.

So here you go. Have a bromance palate cleanser:

The end. Which is really just the beginning.

To the Beautiful You premieres next week on SBS. Catch Episode 1 on August 15.

Thanks, JB! This was HI-larious! I'm not really planning on watching this one, but your summation of the plot with the screenshots was perfect.

Lee Hyun-woo's hair might be just as bad as Lee Si Young's hair in Wild Romance which kept me from enjoying or really watching more than 1 episode of that show. Also Sulli doesn't look anything like a boy, which doesn't surprise me as the only girl posing as boy story actress ever in the whole world was Yoon Eun Hee in Coffee Prince

The PD of BBF being involved actually makes me kind of hopeful. I mean Hana Kimi is a SILLY freakin' show, unlike Hana Yori Dango which, although somewhat silly, I was able to take really seriously. Therefore it was ruined by the Korean director who did not seem to get or appreciate the beauty and drama of the original, and just made it, well, SILLY. Since Hana Kimi is already quite ridiculous, they can't ruin it, right? Okay, they can still ruin it in other ways, but I'm not as hopeless about this remake as I expected it to be.

My biggest worry is whether or not there will be an Oscar equivalent, and if he will be even half as funny as the original! After Nakatsu I think Oscar was my favorite character lol.

Why do they give Lee Hyun woo the worst haircut of the lot? His hairdo looks like a mushroom cut you would give to 5 year old. Even Sulli has a better haircut. I think he's the only good actor among the guys.

Sulli doesn't look like a dude. She looks like she's just dressed unisex. She looks prettier dress as a dude than the actress playing the gymnast who's ugly. Maybe they should have switched roles.

Hope they don't mess it up like they did BOF.
Dunno if this one can top the original Japanese version.

Sulli looks so adorable! I cannot wait for this series! When I first heard about the series I thought it might be worth watching, but it wasn't until I started seeing production stills that I realized "hey, I need to watch this!" I was pretty displeased with the last drama I finished, so here's top hoping this one will be a winner!

Have people read the actual manga before they comment on this? I hate it when people start judging the drama based on the other two adaptations not on the original manga itself!!!

Personally I think that no adaptations have lived up to the awesomeness of the manga. I think we should wait and see the first episode before we criticize, shall we? I hate it when people have this prejudice against idols turned actor... but when its actor turned singer everyone praise "he sings well for an actor"!

not looking forward to the obvious bear vs fox fight coming most likely around episode 9 or so. i would love to have a korean drama that doesn't have women fighting over a guy.

also, i liked that even in the japanese version, the st blossoms girls weren't malicious or cut throat. even in teh japanese version when one of the girls has an opportunity to act that way, she opts not to (not wanting to type a spoiler here but if you've seen the japanese version, you know what item one of the hibari 4 finds that belongs to ashiya)

i'll watch this shit show and laugh along with the recaps like the rest of ya.

Haha this was hilarious.
It's probably not going to be on my list for top dramas of the year but I'll give it a go and see if it'll at least keep me mildly entertained. I'm really wary of idol actors. Most of them are just not meant to be placed as main characters of a drama, especially not as the main leads (there's like a tiny exception here) but hopefully it'll improve if it's bad at first.

I love SHINee and Minho but the thought of Minho acting makes me cringe... When you become a fan who knows how to accept your idol's flaws, you'll see that Minho's acting isn't that good. I'm not going to be a delusional fan who goes, "WHAT?! OPPA CAN SING, RAP AND ACT! WHY AREN'T YOU SUPPORTING HIM?!" I immediately tsk-ed when I heard about him being the male lead. I do have a bit of expectations for Sulli. Didn't she used to be a child actress? Hopefully it won't be as bad as I think it will be... I'm hoping. If it flops, the least I can do is read the recaps.
Minho ah...fighting... T_T

This is hard for me because I really did like the Japanese version and Ikuta Toma was BRILLIANT as Nakatsu, I don't think they could have picked a better actor to play Nakatsu. I'm not sure how Lee Hyun Woo's gonna do with the role, but, when you have that one actor that you made you believe he is the character - I think it'll be hard for me to like Eun Gyul's character. I just hope he understands that as silly as Nakastu was, he had depth as well. It'd be better they don't forget about it or I will be extremely disappointed >..<

It'd be better they don't forget about it or I will be extremely disappointed :( Jiro did came close in the Taiwanese version though - it could be because I like Fahrenheit LOL

As for Sulli... I liked Horikita Maki, she is by far my favourite Japanese actress - I have every drama/movies she had ever been in and that is a lot for me because I don't really follow actresses. She is funny and brilliant, slightly fragile and have great comedic timing - I think that awkward smile of hers helped. I don't know much about Sulli, but, I do hope she could actually pull off Ashiya because I really don't like Ella in the Taiwanese version...

You can NEVER top Oguri Shun in my eyes. I mean, seriously. He will forever be my Hanazawa Rui and though his role as Sano wasn't as memorable as his role as Rui, it was still one of the few that I like. I like his comic timing and the 'kissing monster' running gag was hilarious for me. I've seen Minho in Salamander Gang - to be honest, he's a good singer. He can dance really well as well. I won't say that he is not talented. But, his acting in Salamander was so one-dimensional I wonder why they cast him in the first place. He looked pale in comparison to the other actors on Salamander. I do hope he had grown since and could do well playing "Sano" and be the first actor to play that role which had been played by Shun before that I could say - I actually liked that better than Shun's version. Yes, despite the fact that I liked Fahrenheit, I hated Wu Chun as "Sano"... Seriously, that one as just BAD casting :(

In the manga it's not just plain girl-on-high-stalker-mode, she has a real reason to go to the school to help him, she feels responsible for his injury, are they going to change that here so the girl is just a sasaeng fan???

Okay... it'll be the last I'll rant about Lee Hyun Woo's hair (for a while hehe).

His Equator Man hair from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwm_MnmeafE is quite perfect for Nakatsu. Considering that the other two of the main trio had to make significant changes to their regular hairstyle to match their manga counterparts, the frizzy brown Sunwoo hair from EM fits the bill of Nakatsu's messy light-colored hair, and the frizziness could be a good foil to Minho's straight hair.

I half understand why the bowl cut, though, it enhances his image as a bumbling foil to Minho. It suits Nakatsu's personality as someone who's outrageous and monkeylike, but on a less attractive actor it wouldn't have fit another aspect of Nakatsu, which is that he's popular with the girls for his looks - he's the genius soccer player, friendly and charismatic.

Ok laugh if you must - but give those guys a chance! And i so far over 15 will not say. The one who dies was the mother! so it is all in the past (think) and it seems very sad scene with Minho showing a lot of passion. I ask you what is so bad about loving your mother!
This sounds like a fresh new version and from what i have seen and read looks to be good with a more modern feel and more up to date scenes. it could be very big break for some so i want to give chance!
Yes i have watched all the other Hana Kimi's too and read the manga but will not be so quick to compare. This also seems to have more of a storie compared to other versions so im looking for something new even though on outside it may look the same to some.
Knew JB would not like it- they seem to like darker shows- but i decided to read anyhow because i at least though they be fair - i was disappointed- they made judgment without seeing. I will see it before i judge but i know young adult shows not get the ratings because adults control tvs more in Korea then here.
I am not SHINee fan but willing to give him my support

To bad you not seeing before you decide! And just for the books - i way over 15 - the funeral was his mothers and guess you not hear the part where Minho was praised for his acting. Is no one allowed to feel sad at mothers funeral? Looks to be very touching scene. What , you can not have a story? I think this one will be more balanced emotion wise and not just for laughts. Sulli was triped in restroom and accidently grabbed guys pants. So instead of trying to be funny - please get story straight and not judge before it aired. I for one want to give those guys chance.

I don't know if this has been brought up before but I'm curious about something. I'm a big fan of the manga and the j-drama so I'm a bit confused by the plot summary we have read for the k-drama where the Mizuki/Jae Hee character is basically a sasaeng fan of Sano/Tae Joon, and goes to his school to stalk him into recovery instead of the Mizuki who feels responsible for his inability to jump. So, are they hidding the fact to use it as a plot twist later on or they have changed the character motivations?

I don't understand why TTBY has a low rating in korea. I mean here in Philippines, its a BOMB! It is the best korean drama i've watched so far. I love the plot of the story.. the characters.. the OSTs.. EVERYTHING! I cried niagra falls and laughed and fangirled as if there's no tomorrow. I got really attached to the characters and i just couldn't get enough of them. But i am really unsatisfied with the ending. TO THE BEAUTIFUL YOU SEASON 2 PLEASE :D
