Song Seung-heon on acting, ratings, and Dr. Jin

There’s a strange dichotomy about Song Seung-heon that occasionally crops up, and this interview is another example of it.

Essentially, he’ll act in a project and be mediocre in it despite incredible hype, and occasionally even be terrible. I’ll wonder how on earth he got to be as famous as he is, then remember The Pretty, which in his case possesses so much force of its own that it practically has its own entity. There are also the occasional stories hinting at a sizable ego and star demands, and you’ll wonder if he’s some kind of diva.

But then I’ll see or read an interview with him like this one, or the one following My Princess, and he’ll be so self-aware that I find myself confused and reevaluating. You mean Dr. Jin… makes sense? (The person, I mean, sadly not the drama.)

I guess it boils down to: He seems like a nice guy. Still can’t act, although he does win points for (1) knowing it and (2) admitting it. Too bad personality doesn’t always translate into onscreen skills — because you can SEE him straining to act in Dr. Jin, and you want to go there with him, but you just can’t. Especially when the script and the directing are falling to pieces all around him.

Song explained his prior reluctance to dip into the period drama genre: “For whatever reason, I’d had the preconception that doing a sageuk would be boring. I also thought I was still lacking [as an actor] to attempt one. I had thought to try it later, after I’d built up more experience, but I found the premise extremely interesting. Dr. Jin helped get me past a lot of my sageuk fears. I’d like to give a sageuk a proper try next time.”

Calling Dr. Jin his most difficult-to-shoot drama in terms of physical comfort, he said, “This summer was really hot. Filming was extremely taxing. The costumes are hot because they’re Joseon-era clothes, I had to wear a wig… but thanks to Dr. Jin, I was able to feel the fun of the sageuk genre.”

Song Seung-heon had already read the original manga Time Slip Dr. Jin when he’d been approached to do the role. “I was extremely happy,” he explained. “He’s not just a simple doctor, but he gets to meet real-life people in history and see historical events unfold.” AND ALSO CHANGE THEM, YOU DOLT.

Sorry, sorry. Must remember: Song Seung-heon is not Hyuk. Song Seung-heon is not Hyuk.

If there’s anything that gives him disappointment, it’s the drama’s “melo” line, aka the love story between him and co-star Park Min-young.

“In the Japanese drama that storyline is restrained. But our director said, ‘In a Korean drama, we can’t leave out the melo loveline,’ and put it back in. However, the director, writer, and I differed in our opinions of what happens when Jin Hyuk meets Young-rae in the Joseon era.”

Huh. Good for you, Song Seung-heon! I had a feeling the director was the main problem in this drama — if by “feeling” I mean it’s glaringly obvious from every single frame in the show — but who would’ve guessed it was Song wanting more restraint? More purism to the original story?

In Song’s opinion, the central point of Jin Hyuk’s character is: “He traveled to Joseon to save the woman he left in the present, Mina.” Thus in his mind Hyuk wasn’t out to romance anyone else and Song wasn’t thrilled with the director’s insistence that Hyuk falls for Young-rae, but there wasn’t much he could do about it.

He said, “They look the same, but they’re not the same person.” THANK YOU, sanity. “I asked the director, ‘How can they fall in love just because they look the same?’” You would think that would be the first thing a writer or director would consider in a doppelganger drama, but I guess we shouldn’t give the PD too much credit here.

It’s too bad Song had to go with a storyline he didn’t believe in; perhaps if he’d been invested in it, he would have been more suited to emoting their angsty scenes. He said, “Later, I saw that Young-rae had to be saved in order for Mina to also live. That’s an example of the type of melo thing I was a little disappointed in.”

That aside, Song enjoyed everything else about the drama shoot — his fellow cast members, the staff, the filming atmosphere. Asked about his co-stars, he said, “I shot a movie with [Lee] Beom-soo hyung ten years ago called Once Run. We were friendly, too. With this project, though, I sensed a more seasoned Beom-soo sunbaenim than from back then.”

“This was my first time meeting [Kim] Jaejoong-sshi, but I think he’s got talent. We became friendly after talking a lot and sharing our concerns. It’s also my first time meeting Min-young-ie, and after first just seeing her usual bright image, I could see in this drama that she was really good at playing both characters.”

Ratings: “Up against A Gentleman’s Dignity, naturally we lost. But someone said that the people who win medals aren’t the only ones to be praised — those who didn’t win medals also worked hard and sweat blood. You shouldn’t judge merely based on someone not winning a medal. We did lose in the ratings, but the director, writer, and actors all worked hard. We weren’t a so-called makjang drama. We faced difficulties like editing despite the MBC union strike. I have no regrets.”

With two big stars heading those two dramas, there was a lot of pre-show talk about whether Song Seung-heon’s starpower would beat Jang Dong-gun’s, or vice versa. “Just being compared with Dong-gun hyung is excessive. I’m thankful just for the comparison. I didn’t feel any pressure,” Song said.

What about all the criticism about Song’s lack of acting ability?

“I can’t always feel satisfied with my acting. However, in this drama Jin Hyuk encountered a lot of extreme situations, and as a result I was able to show a much more dynamic side to my acting than in previous roles. I feel like I’ve broadened my range a bit. Of course, the disappointment is greater, but on a personal level I’m satisfied that I was able to portray those sides.”

The interviewer asked whether he thought the criticism of his acting came because he was so good-looking (too pretty! too pretty!) even when he “ruined” his image (by dirtying himself and mussing up his polished image). Song replied, “That’s not it. There are a lot of good-looking actors who ruin their images and don’t get criticized about their acting. I have to perform well in order to keep those comments from arising.”

If he were to be given a time-slip opportunity, would he choose to be an actor again? After some silence, Song replied, “Again? Um… I suppose I should answer that I would do it no matter what, right? Hahaha. If I could go back in time, I’d like to try being an athlete, at golf or soccer. Of course, this is assuming I’d be good at those. [Laughs] When I watch [Cristiano] Ronaldo dribbling the ball, I sometimes wonder what it would be like to drive onward like that, feeling that kind of joy. I hadn’t dreamed of being an actor since childhood; it’s something that started from a chance opportunity, so I hadn’t prepared much for it. If I could go back, I think I’d study acting in a more methodical way.”

He added, “I’d also want to go back to my middle and high school years. I was really happy then. High school seems like just the other day, but 15 years have passed by in a blur. My maternal grandmother raised me, and passed away when I was in middle school. If I could go back to that time, I’d want to treat her better — she died of cancer — and later on that was something I regretted a lot.”

Song only recently began using Twitter (on May 31), and now communicates with fans via Facebook and me2day as well. He said, “I first heard of me2day while shooting My Princess and started using it then. I had thought those things didn’t really suit me, but Jaejoong and the others around me use SNS a lot. I hadn’t even intended to change my phone, but I thought if I didn’t get a smartphone I’d get left behind the times. [Laughs] After using SNS, I find that my fans really like it. I don’t use it frequently, but I can see the fun of it.”

He has plans to return to film now that Dr. Jin has wrapped: “I haven’t been cast for sure yet, but I think I’ll be going back to the past.”

Question: As a top star and Hallyu star, what is your final dream?

“Marriage. Hahaha. Deep in my heart, my biggest dream is to raise a happy family with a wife and children I love. It might not be so for an actor, but I think personal happiness is about raising a family. Looking at my friends, they’ve all had babies and are living happily, and I’m envious of that. My ideal type is… as my sunbaes say, the person who makes you feel giddy at first doesn’t last long, and you should marry the person who’s your friend, whom you can talk with comfortably. Then again, there are people who tell me to take my time getting married. [Laughs] If I had to choose between love and work? Without hesitation, I’d pick love.”

I've been following him on Facebook and I must say, he is really endearing. I'm tempted to even call him naive. He comes across as a genuinely sweet, hard-working person, who might be vain - he sure knows he's pretty ^_^ - but he shows a healthy amount of self-criticism. In any case, I watched about 35 minutes of Dr. Jin, so I'm not qualified to talk about his 'acting' in this show. I just know that I'll definitely give his next project a try of at least 35' as well :)

I visited his FB and twitter page and yes, he is most amusing...and surprisingly funny. Found myself chuckling a few times reading his captions to his posted photos. And, he's got some obsession with food and the sky. Most amusing.

Yea, and how bout the latest installment of his "Locate Me" game with the added feature of "say 'found!'" upon locating him? Because before I realised it, I was searching thru his posted picture for him and exclaimed to computer "FOUND!"...then, I came to my senses. AAAAHHHH, stupid SSH! Made me play the dumb game!...Actually, don't know who is more stupid; he, who happily provided the game or I and countless other thousands, who went and play it! Hahaha...yes, yes kakashi, a little vain. But, most amusing =)

I don't like him , even after this interview. I don't know he seems kinda arrogant and shameless. He can't act, but still do. And to him, it doesn't seems to be a big deal. Bein pretty isn't everything man. Gotta learn to act or something.

'the pretty', my new nickname. I think from now on, I will be super leery of anything with Song Seung-heon. Truth be told, I've never been bowled over by his acting! People complained about So Ji Sub, they are definitely not the same. I thought his acting in Dr Jin was sub par! Jaejoong did a better job as he struggled to make a good showing in a bad drama!

Wow, I'm... pleasantly surprised. This is my first time reading an interview of his and he sure does come across as a decent bloke. Full of awareness too.

Still a bit of an anomaly though. How many actors have we seen who rely on their looks alone AND not being an idol either...?

first, i saw the trailer it is totally exciting drama but some part of the scene didn't reached my expectation after i watched but it never been boring to me maybe we have different point of view how the story goes and it depend also the people how would they appreciate it but i think there is no perfect that was the story goes on ! always have ? but important we should look forward and enjoyed watching.
Even though still like the drama dr. jin i understand how the drama goes on and i would to commendable the actors they doing great and i appreciate they hard worked and i'm not kind of person that pulling down the dignity of others they doing there job well by potraying the character well and ssh character is not too powerful even not ssh potrayed that character that was the story of this character
i hate so much people critizing ssh they doing their job well but for those others descriminates him you are too much! enough ! don't you realized you bullying SSH whatever the reason is it wanting to improved only his acting career still you hurt him so much and judge him so much. i hope you would live in heaven because i know people can't be happy for others or praise he/she are living in hell.
why don't you makes satisfied and why makes your life difficult or complicated and not be open minded and give him chance
may god bless you ...

Oow, so sweet. He seems like a nice guy. I feel sorry now for ranting on him in Jin.
Well, hope he knows now that playing a complicated character is not his forte, just stick with simple character in romcom, I guess.
On the side note, the PD and writer of Jin really mess up this drama !!!

Don't know where javabeans got the diva part from. So far, all I've ever read from his costars to production teams and every other person working with him has always said that he is no diva. Very hardworking it seems.

Actually, the only place that showed his "demanding" side was the conversation between javabeans and girlfriend a few months back where they were jokingly pulling his leg by conjuring up an imaginary arrogant Seung Hun demanding and yelling into his bluetooth. That was made up.

But, yeah, he is hard working but lacking in acting skills. Completely agree. He's got to work at it HARDER.

Javabeans doesn't follow him but if you've read his interviews through his career, the thing about him is he is damn honest. Yes, a little naive too. Don't know bout his army thing but even then, he honestly admitted his mistake and made no excuses. He humbly apologised and took the shame. Sincere and that's what this interview was as well. No surprise or mystery here javabeans. This interview is true to his character if you've followed him. Song Seung Hun through and through.

I might eventually finish Dr. Jin.

His acting isn't great, yeah, but I still enjoy watching him-- at the very least I always know what his character is "supposed" to be feeling, unlike a few other characters I've encountered in Kdrama land.

I have hope for him getting better, not that I've watched everything he was in. My first time seeing him in anything was "My Princess" and I thought he was totally fine in that. It wasn't a role that required the awesome levels of awesome say that Gong Yoo put fort in "Big".

While Gong Yoo's acting is was almost enough to save the trainwreck that "Big" became, SSH just doesn't have that prowess (yet...). I think for him to really grow as an actor he can't be the lynch pin of the drama. He needs strong writing, strong direction and a really strong supporting cast.

Riiiiight... A totally hot guy like him just CAN'T find someone that loves him for himself, regardless of how much he tries.

We are to believe that he is simply an unlucky hot guy looking for love, wanting to marry and have a family, but just can't find that special 'someone.'

More PR crap that I am not buying. I think he is very aware of how freakin' gorgeous he is, how he could have any woman he wanted, and; how he gets parts even lacking acting skills.

SSH is laughing at us. He is acting, this is how he does "humble."

Lol, I gotta agree with you. Standard interview with standard answers and standard "humble" attitude. After all these years, the man and his team are well aware of his attractions as well as his limitations. There is no way that the man does not know that his acting is sub par and his singing is atrocious--unless he lives in a bubble.

The industry still allows him to get away with it because he is a hallyu star with a loyal fanbase-- especially in Japan. He is still raking in big dough, so why not continue a few more years until the well runs dry.

It surprises me that so many here think that one has to be a good actor to be a successful one. What SSH has aside from being good looking is an charismatic appeal that comes across of film.

This draws women to him, magnetism is a force to be reckoned with.

"But that’s just it. He isn’t a successful actor, he’s just successful"....

to which he sorts of readily admits, hahaha.

But isn't it proof that a simple, 'standardised' interview like this even managed to draw so many comments here ....proof that he's a draw ( for both good and bad)

I totallly agree that he has that charismatic magnetic appeal that came so easily through the celluloid...so this confers him star quality which elevated him to Halluyu Star status. How we criticize reflects more on us than on him, actually.

Required fields are marked *

I don't think anyone's criticisms are wrong though. We're just people who see a guy that can kinda, sorta act and we wonder why he is so famous. So, rather I find we aren't criticizing but critiquing. And even if he admits it, it's not enough to simply admit something if, as other commenters have stated, he doesn't improve. After a while it just sounds like an excuse to why he's sub-par every time. I can't always be pleased with my acting but I must try harder is nice to say but it's also the generic thing to say. And even though we can't be sure whether or not he's trying to improve, I expect that he would at least be getting a little better but it just doesn't seem to be happening which leads me to scratch my chin in speculation of the guy most of the time. So he needs to try double-y harder if he's trying at all.

And while I do admit he draws attention, I'm actually not seeing the charisma or magnetism that is SO amazing as I can read a bunch of articles about him, sure, but I can't sit through anything he starrs in. To me charisma/magnetism is something you can see and feel radiating off a person that makes them fun to watch but I can't watch SSH. So, I ask, does he really have "star quality" or is it just his "star quality" looks? And I think that's the main point some of us are getting at.

I love all of his answers to this interview. You can tell he's quite a humble person.. even though many people were criticizing and saying things about him, he took his criticism and found a way to use it to his benefit. Yes, Dr. Jin was a bit messy, but I'm glad that he was able to break out of his comfort zone a bit and try something new even though he wasn't sure if he could carry it on. For what its worth I think he truly did a great job on his role, even though it didn't turn out good in terms of ratings.

Yes, I guess being good looking can have its set back, but I really appreciate that he's a good person with a good personality and that he has a positive outlook on everything he does.

Thanks for posting the lovely pictures of him and the interview.. Wish he gets a better script next time~ ! :)

I'm astounded at the many criticisms of the acting of SSH. After seeing many of his performances (Dr. Jin excluded), I can't help but draw the comparison to a US actor named James Dean who, along with Marlon Brando, revolutionized the approach to acting from the "technique" to "method" (or intuitive) back in the 1950's. One of Dean's three movies, before his death at age 24, was "East of Eden", and my favorite performance of SSH is also "East of Eden", although not the same story.

As a woman approaching the age of 83, I feel compelled to support SSH for his acting ability because I'm not a star-struck fan who is fantasizing about a young man with unusual good looks. If, as many people are saying, his performance in Dr. Jin is not up to standard, I would tend to place blame more on the writing, since the actor can do only so much with the words given to him.

He chooses to act like an ordinary man in real world to conceal his feeling inside. We can tell how charming he is in his interview or his film when he was in Vietnam. He is so natural appeal. I wish he would have happy family as he wish. It is really hard to find a right person particularly at his social status for the time being. I enjoy Dr Jin drama in which Song Seung-heon treat the patients, perform brain operation, make syringes etc.

But Park Min-young is a bit extra to the drama. Her hugging scene with Kim Jaejoong is so fake and obvious. You can slide a ruler and see the gap already.
I rather they dun hug at all and omit this hugging scene from the drama.

Love Song Seung-heon he is way too beautiful! He is the most beautiful man I have ever laid eyes on, no guy should have eyes like that. They are beautiful black pools that I would gladly swim in. In fact, even if he was a girl and had those eyes I would have to stare they are so very beautiful. He needs to study the form like Lee Byung hun now that guy can act 10 out of 10 all the time...he is amasing. What he does though is to study the old actors, he watches old movies across a wide range of films, from the great Hollywood actors through to the best Asian actors. He has an extensive video library and it has paid off. If SSH did the same he would blow Hollywood apart but he needs the will and the inclination to do so. I just think he doesn't give a rats ass about being famous or raking in the cash he's happy with his lot. what happens when he is no longer pretty though? What then? I love him though he seems really chilled and a nice guy, I haven't heard any horrible stories about him being a pig to any women.

I have to disagree strenuously with all those who say he can't act! I live in the U.S., have watched films and dramas for over a half century. BTW, we have some fine actors in the U.S. Just saying. SSH captivated me from the beginning. As I have come to watch Korean shows I have noticed across the board how I will dislike an actor/actress in one role and think them untalented only to recognize them in another one where it is clear they CAN act different characters. If you have not watched East if Eden, done about 10 years, I think, into SSH's career, I suggest you do so. It is a sweeping story that makes huge demands on its main character, Dung Chul, who manages to carry almost the entire emotional weight of the drama, acting on the knife edge of being a bad guy/still lovable by all. Think about all the complex emotions he displays in all the scenes with the dozens of characters. His eyes are so soulful and open to the camera, it's like you can see right inside him. Sure, some of his productions aren't as good as others - but that is the nature of all of them. Of all the 100s of Korean actors I have watched, I put SSH #1. You may disagree. From all the comments above, it is not clear just what you object to, except that you envy or resent his good looks. I'd say by looks alone, I would pick his face to represent 1,000 years of Asian men. But like he said, looks alone won't allow you to continue in acting. Also, consider that he's been in the business 20 years, so he is not the teeny bopper idol like Lee Min Ho, who I think is really overrated. So, maybe Dr. Jin wasn't the best role. So what. No actor should limit himself/herself to rom/com or any genre. Just about all actors welcome the chance to stretch and try on new and demanding roles. I think SSH has true heart, made a mistake as a young man, and there are still those who resent his success. I can't wait to see Obsessed!
