Faith: Episode 12

A much more exciting episode, with a face-off and big step forward for our couple. The good guys even get a step ahead with a scheme that proves they’re not just sitting ducks, and that Aunt and Young are really the brains of this operation. Mostly there’s a lot of funny and even a little romance, which keeps me happy.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Ki Chul gets word that Choi Young is on his way here. So much for surprise sneak attack. Eum-ja is on high alert, but it’s the two Suribang boys who show up at the compound, and give him the runaround before disappearing. Hm, a diversion?

Ki Chul mulls it over and decides triumphantly that he knows why Young is coming – to steal the diary. Hwasuin asks Eum-ja if the one boy with the pretty eyes was here, and that gets a scowl out of him.

She figures they should go give Ki Chul the audience he needs (That pretty much sums up his entire character, doesn’t it?) and they join him as he fawns over how important the diary must be.

But the thing he trips up on is how simple and low-rent it is for Young to sneak in and steal the diary while Ki Chul is supposed to be away on a trip. He thinks it not a fun enough game and clearly Young is a better opponent than that.

His conclusion? Young must be sending him a message, to bring the diary himself and hand it over, or else he gets robbed.

Young sets up another of his Suribang friends to wait outside, and deliver “something” to “someone,” in case “something happens to me.” This is the entirety of your contingency plan?

Meanwhile Eun-soo rides as fast as she can. Apparently she rides so hard that the hat gets knocked off her head and her hair falls around her like a shampoo commercial, because that’s not ridiculous at all. Pffft, directing fail.

Young enters the compound, which is eerily empty. He sits and waits. Ki Chul comes out flanked by his guards, who come charging at Young.

I love that he takes the first one out by flinging his sword straight into a man like it’s a tiny dagger, and then running up to yank it out. He slices through them quickly. But then, behind him, they disappear into puffs of vapor. What? Do these guys get made in a jar too?

Young’s sword drips with blood. Ki Chul now stands alone, hands behind his back. Young leaps into the air, sword above his head, and Ki Chul pulls out his sword. He slices Young twice, in the arm and the chest.

Oof, Ki Chul gets the upper hand way too fast for my liking. Young dodges a few strikes, but before he knows it, Ki Chul’s sword is at his throat. He points it down at Young’s shoulder, forcing him to his knees.

But then Young stands back up anyway, and tries to stab. Ki Chul whirls him around with the sword still at his throat, like they’re backhugging, but in a murderous way. And that’s when Young STABS HIMSELF, going clean through to stab Ki Chul too. Aaaaack!

And then… he opens his eyes? The frak? Was he imagining all this? UGH.

Goddamnit, he’s still sitting in the same spot, having imagined the whole thing. I didn’t think I’d be so annoyed that you’re not stabbed right now, but I am.

Eun-soo finds Dae-man and demands to know where his leader is. Dae-man stutters that they’re not supposed to follow, so Eun-soo runs off to find him alone.

Ki Chul shows up to meet Young all alone. He asks where the trap is, and Young says setting a trap means you’re not really prepared to die… and Ki Chul is too powerful an opponent to face with anything less than his life on the line.

He asks if Ki Chul brought the diary. He did. Young asks if he really intends to kill anyone who shows support for the king, and Ki Chul confirms it. Young: “Then what I suspected about you is true. That with you gone, the world would be a slightly better place.”

With that, he charges, and they fight.

Ki Chul slices Young in the arm. And then through the midsection. Aaagh, this is happening exactly like it did in his imagination! Okay, I take it back. I won’t be annoyed. Just don’t do the double skewering thing!

Ki Chul slices the bandana off the hilt of Young’s sword, and it falls to the ground. He struggles but gathers up his strength and attacks. He ends up in the same position as his imaginary one… and doesn’t stab himself to get to Ki Chul. Oh phew.

The thought of what this scene could look like if directed better makes me want to cry.

He whirls around and they fire up their ki powers. Ki Chul just chuckles. They separate for a moment and get ready to charge again, when Eun-soo suddenly runs in between them and yells at everybody to stop.

She stands there with a dagger to her throat, threatening to die if they don’t quit it. Did everyone have Suicide Kool-Aid with their breakfast this morning?

Ki Chul asks her to answer a question then: When does he die? She hesitates, and he roars at her that he needs to have a reason to let her live. She says four years, maybe five. He asks by whose hand.

“Does the king remain after I die?” She says yes. “Then the one who kills me is the king. Did you ask what I’m doing? I’m trying to test heaven’s history, to see if I can change it.” OH. He says that if he can, he and the doc will have some words, so she should stay alive till then. And with that, he turns to go.

That leaves Young to yell at her for risking her life, and Eun-soo to yell back at him that he’s the one who started it. Eun-soo: “You’re the one who’s trying to die! You said you’d lose! If you fight and die, is that the end? How can you only think of yourself?!”

Omo, is that a confession? She says he’s doing this for her, so that means if he dies, it’s because of her. “You know what it feels like to be the one left behind!” He shoots her a look of surprise.

She wraps his bloody hand and tells him not to move the one that’s frozen blue from Ki Chul’s energy. She reaches for it but he pulls it away, and she pulls it close anyway. She covers his hand in hers and starts to blow on it to warm it.

The closeness startles him, and he just watches her intently for a moment. She’s hunched over his hand, and suddenly he reaches out to sweep the hair out of her face. So you can look at her?

She inches back at first, but he tucks the hair behind her ear. And just as he does, a tear falls and she begins to cry.

He says that it was the only plan he could think of – to just try it, and fail if he fails, because that’s just always how he’s lived his life. He glances over at her again, “I won’t risk my life that easily anymore. Ever again. So… don’t cry.” Awwwww.

Ki Chul’s underlings are up in arms that he’s used his ki, which he clearly shouldn’t be doing. Oh, interesting. Is this what’s killing him? He suddenly looks very different – haggard, thin, powerless.

They argue that he should’ve taken that Woodalchi out without his powers, but then wonder if Young was so strong that it wasn’t possible. But all Ki Chul can do even now is obsess over Eun-soo’s words that the nation of Yuan would collapse and that he’d die.

He growls that there’s no such thing as a history that can’t be changed, and if the king is the one to kill him, he’ll just replace the king, and if Yuan won’t last, he’ll replace the country with another. “If the heavens have decided it, then I will replace the heavens.” Chills.

Young and Eun-soo walk through the palace, followed by a giddy Dae-man and Dol-bae. I love that they’re just walking and talking, but the peepers make it seem like they’re doing something so illicit. Young hilariously stops every five seconds to shoo them away.

Eun-soo decides that she won’t run away anymore, which makes Young smile. She figures that just leaves fighting Ki Chul. He wonders why she can’t just do neither and sit still, but she says that’s not in her nature, “I can’t do that – just breathe and do nothing.” Which is why you’re great.

She asks if he doesn’t want to be her partner. She says her goal is to get her diary back, and his goal is the protect the king from Ki Chul. Ki Chul won’t just hand that thing over, but if the king becomes strong enough, he could demand it from him.

She decides they’ll have to be partners, and tries to get him to say the word in English. “Partner. Aren’t you going to learn heaven-speak at all? It’s not even that hard to pronounce.” He refuses to say the word, but does smile when she tells him that it means they fight on the same side.

I love that she’s taken to ordering him around with the catchall: “I saved your life, but you can’t do this one thing for me?” She tells him that if they’re going to be partners, there are some rules.

They have to tell each other everything, and they protect each other. That last part does not compute for him. “Each other?” She says they protect each other, which means one person can’t go running off to fight without telling the other person.

He agrees with the caveat that she do the same – no running off anywhere without telling him. Hee. So they’re basically both like, don’t do anything without me knowing.

She sticks out her hand for a shake, and he looks at it skeptically. Didn’t she say that was for hellos and goodbyes? She says it’s also for times like this, and when he fidgets, she just grabs his hand and forces the shake.

He looks over and sees the boys giggling from behind the bushes. She’s still madly shaking his hand, and he leans in to ask, “Didn’t you say we would protect each other? Then can you maybe start with protecting my dignity?” Ha. They let go just as Aunt walks up. Ha, did everyone see them holding hands?

They go to see the king and queen, and when Eun-soo starts to tell them about her night, Young grabs her hand to stop her from giving them any details beyond her leaving and Young stopping her.

Young says that the veiled assassins are in town and asks if Eun-soo can remain with the queen, under her protection detail. But! That’s where the mole is! The king asks if that would be okay (I like that he asks her) and the queen says yes.

Gongmin asks Eun-soo about the future, and that Joseon that she spoke of. What is it? She hedges and says that it’s a country… waaaaay off to the east, where a lot of Yis live. Ha.

She confesses that she doesn’t really know that much about the future. Young mutters, “If you don’t know, don’t say.” She just continues, saying that she’s not sure if the history she knows happens because she came here or if it’s a history that exists only before having come here.

Young: “Do you not hear me?” Eun-soo: “I’m not saying I know when I don’t!” Young: “Still!” Suddenly she’s standing up and they’re bickering in each other’s faces, totally oblivious to the fact that they’re doing this in front of the king and queen. So cute. Gongmin smirks, and Noguk and Aunt just gape. Hee.

Eun-soo finally gets to rant the comeback she wants to… at a vase. HA. I love her.

Meanwhile, the Woodalchi gather to discuss very important business: how far their leader has gone with the doc. Deok-man demonstrates the hand-holding he saw when Young came to stop Eun-soo from running away, and the other guys all balk that he must’ve seen it wrong.

They’re like, Our leader? With a woman? No. Deok-man insists, “I saw it with my own eyes!” He grabs Dae-man to ask if he saw it too, but he says no. The guys give Deok-man another beating.

Suddenly Dae-man turns back to say he did see that though… when the doc was saving Leader… she used her lips on his lips and many many times at that. They practically all faint at the thought.

Young sits in his room staring at his sword. Or more accurately, at the hilt. He must’ve tied the bandana back on after the fight, but he stares at it now with a sigh. He makes a decision and unties it, and puts it away in a chest.

Aunt comes by and marvels in her usual gruff way that the doc was able to get through his thick skull. He just complains that he has so much to do now, which earns him a slap upside the head. He really deserves a few more.

But it’s down to business, as they have to take care of this veiled assassin squad. She offers some of her warriors and then remembers that they have a mole somewhere in the palace.

Young says the mole conveyed the exact message that he would go to Ki Chul with his life on the line. He asks where the leak could be, and Aunt realizes with shock, “I’m the leak.” She recalls saying those words to Noguk.

He asks who might’ve been around, and she says she’ll handle the matter. But Young tells her not to—they can feed her misinformation. Yay for smart good guys.

The ideal plan would be to find a way to draw out the veiled assassins one at a time. All together, and Young can’t guarantee he can win.

Aunt says she’ll try, and then asks what Eun-soo said to make him stop his crazy shit. Did she use the law of heaven or something?

Young: “Life. She put up her life.” And then HE has the gall to be annoyed at her fearlessness, complaining that someone who supposedly hates the smell of blood just stuck a knife at her throat. Why, is she stealing your death wish thunder?

That just gets him all riled up again and he storms out, leaving Aunt gaping behind him.

Eun-soo gets new clothes and complains at all the layers. Aunt comes in to help her, and says quietly that she has a request to make. Young didn’t seem to like the idea, saying that someone from heaven wouldn’t want to lie.

Eun-soo suddenly sits Aunt down and starts to pull her face this way and that, thinking of ways she could fix her face to make her look twenty again. Aunt asks, “Is such a thing possible?” Eun-soo laughs, “Fooled you, didn’t I? I’m a good liar!” Haha.

Gongmin frets that only four days remain until the lecture, and trembles at the thought that Ki Chul really plans to kill anyone who supports him, just for choosing his side. Noguk sees what he’s really upset about and assures him, “You’re not like him.”

He feels guilty that people are losing their lives in support of him, but she says that people dying because of that choice doesn’t make him the same as Ki Chul. She asks him to believe in himself, otherwise those who struggle on his behalf become pathetic.

Young and Aunt put their plan into motion. Four Woodalchi change into plain clothes (Whoa, hello there.) and get sent off to act quietly in secret with Young’s usual, “Just yunno, do well.” One by one, they start quietly nabbing the scholars so they can be protected in secret.

At the same time, Eun-soo begins to tell the king names of people who will end up being supporters or enemies, and they do this all out in the open, so that the mole can hear. Aunt keeps an eye out and notices suspicious movement. Yes! She spotted the mole!

Ki Chul gets the list of names, and it’s suddenly different from what they expected. Now they have no idea which list was true, and who ends up friend or foe. The mole also conveys word that the good guys are protecting the king’s supporters in one location, and the only one who knows where is “a close friend of the king.”

That can only mean Young. Eum-ja offers to go, eager to face off against Young, but Ki Chul sends him elsewhere, to fetch “someone important.”

Meanwhile Young collects head scholar Lee Je-hyun to join the others. He muses, “When I heard there would be a new king, I thought that if we were safe with no incident, that meant there was no hope. If there is to be change, the winds of blood will blow. In times like these, warriors like you are the most pitiful – until you are cut down, you must continue to cut others.”

He returns to the palace to find Eun-soo out on a stroll, and asks where she left her bodyguards. She points them out, saying she asked to walk alone. She asks if her heavenly wisdom helped his plan, and he asks if she’s really going to keep up her involvement.

She teases him for always being so serious and sincere and worried, and slaps him in the chest playfully, “You’ll get sick that way!” And then she does this cute little twirl to show him the new dress that the queen gave her, and asks what he thinks.

He clears his throat nervously and tells her to go inside. Ha.

She sits down and says that in her world, after a day’s work, partners get together over a drink. But there’s no bar inside the palace, so what about his place? They can get together every night here. He asks so innocently, “Meet and do what?”

She says they can check to make sure they’re both okay, talk about what they did that day, and cheer each other on. He gets avoidy and says he’ll be busy, and her voice grows serious as she says she knows – after all, she’s the one who leaked the information that the king’s closest friend is the only one who knows the hideout location.

She asks if he’s going to take them on all by himself, and he says rather than chasing them down, it’s better to lie in wait. He tells her that if he fights well he can win.

Suddenly out of nowhere, he says, “Lift up your skirt.” Rawr?

He stoops down to lift up her hem, as she squeals in surprise. This from the guy who couldn’t manage to look her in the eye when she asked how she looked? But then he takes a dagger out and ties it to her ankle.

She pulls it out gingerly and squirms that she can’t stab people! She’s a doctor! Young: “Stab first, then you can treat them after. That’s what you did to me.” HAHAHA.

She reminds him that he’s the one who warned not to go around stabbing if she didn’t know how. So he offers to teach her, when they meet here. Aw, you’re promising to meet. He says it might not be every night, but says he’ll teach her when they do, and turns to go.

She waves and gives him a cheerful goodbye, putting a smile on his face, and then only betrays her worry once he’s gone.

He goes to see Man-bo, who complains about this plan of his. Ajumma asks if all they have to do is distract the veiled assassins so that Young can take them on one at a time, and Ajusshi acts all put out.

Young just laughs, “Honestly, you guys are happy to have someone to help, aren’t you? You were bored, weren’t you?” Hee.

Ajusshi accuses him of drinking in the middle of the day and saying crazy things, and Young just keeps teasing, “Eh, I can tell you’re excited!” The way he smiles around them just makes my day.

Jang Bin tries to teach Eun-soo about feeling a pulse—not just the beats, but the quality of it, and the roundness and movement. It’s a foreign concept to her, but she tries to feel her way around.

They’re interrupted when Ki Chul just strolls right in like he owns the joint. He asks Eun-soo what it is that made her open up to the king about the future when she was so reluctant to do so with him.

The queen arrives and raises hell for the lax security around here, and then Woodalchi arrives to announce that the king would like to see him. Gongmin demands to know why he came and Ki Chul just says he wanted to check in with the doctor.

Gongmin says confidently that none of his people will bend to Ki Chul’s threats. But Ki Chul asks if he’s really so confident, wondering how many times Choi Young will run around to clean up after the king’s mess before growing tired of it. It shakes Gongmin up.

Ki Chul adds that the doctor is quite shrewd as well, and won’t she discover in due time who truly has the power to protect her? He laughs and adds casually that his sister, empress of Yuan, asked whether he was fine with the current king, or if Goryeo needed a better one.

Damn. That’s a blow. They talk about trading him out like an old shoe.

Meanwhile, Noguk cleans up the king’s desk and wonders what she can do to make him feel better if he’s had a bad day. Aunt isn’t much help in the matter, but asks the king’s eunuch, who’s married, what his wife does in that situation.

He says she gives him liquor. That seems easy enough, but the women wonder what’s so special about that. The eunuch stammers that it’s not so much the liquor as what they do after… and then sputters that he can’t say any more. Heh.

They don’t get it, so they prod him to answer. With no choice, he spits out, “We… we share a bed!” Noguk freezes, wide-eyed.

And then Gongmin walks in, making the whole thing so hilariously awkward. Noguk practically runs out past him without a word, and he’s left totally puzzled. He asks the eunuch to tell him what happened, and the poor man just wails, “Kill me, your majesty!” Hahaha.

Hwasuin and Eum-ja track down someone named Deok-heung, and convey the message that Ki Chul wants to see him. Can he ride a horse or shall they prepare a carriage? But he just quotes a passage that even in the mountains when it seems there is no path, there you will find another village… and laughs as he walks away.

Young readies for battle and hears someone approaching. He swings… at nothing? Wait, are these people literally invisible? ‘Cause that changes things.

No, they just seem super fast, so they whiz past him back and forth.

At the same time, a member of Suribang is dressed exactly like Young, and leads a few of them into the woods.

Young closes his eyes, and three assassins strike at once. He cuts them down swiftly. Gee, Show, it would’ve been nice if you showed me the awesome action instead of whip-panning around it. He counts, “Three.”

He heads to an inn that looks empty, but he talks to the assassins, knowing they’re listening. He wonders what good it is to kill for money, when it all ends if you die. He says with a smile, “Someone I know says that the most important thing in life is living. But you and I don’t know that. To people like us, living is not dying. But that person is different. That person is really living. And with strength at that.”

An assassin comes running out at him from the shadows. Young tosses his sword up and catches it before stabbing him, without even getting up.

He just continues, “So when I look at her, it makes me think: What am I doing right now?” He looks down at the dead man and shuts his eyes, “Four.”

Eun-soo sits in her spot and waits, trying to feel her pulse.

Young washes his bloodied hands in the rain, and waits. Another assassin. He cuts him down, “Five.” He breathes heavily, sighing and drinking the air each time. It’s starting to worry me.

Deok-heung approaches Eun-soo and introduces himself as Gongmin’s uncle. He asks if she’s really from heaven, and then hands over Hwata’s diary. “I was told if I gave you this present, you’d receive it gladly.” Whaaa? How’d he get that?

Young cuts down another, the sixth, but then slumps to the ground and drops his sword. His right hand is covered in blood. He clenches it in pain.

COMMENTS

Interesting… is Gongmin’s uncle a good guy or a bad guy? Is he offering up the diary per Ki Chul’s orders to lure her over the dark side, or does he have a twist in his agenda? Is Ki Chul giving up the diary hoping that Eun-soo will jump ship and start whispering future things in his ear? There’s a giant string attached to that notebook, and I can’t imagine that it’s a very pleasant cost.

As with most things in this drama, I really wish the epic face-off with Ki Chul was, well… more epic. But it was great to have them battle each other to find out a few things – namely, that Ki Chul shouldn’t be expending his ki, and that if Young could outlast him, he might be able to win. I’m glad he made the choice not to be suicidal even before Eun-soo showed up, because despite being willing to die, he ended up choosing not to filet himself just to get to Ki Chul. It seems like each week we have to take baby steps with him to get him to choose life, but in this episode he confesses (to no one but himself, really) that what he was doing before wasn’t really living; it was just not dying.

It’s nice to know that it’s Eun-soo who makes him question what he’s doing with his life. Earlier in the episode she makes a point of saying that she can’t just sit still and breathe—that’s not a life for her. She always chooses to engage her world and be proactive about things, even if they don’t all quite make sense to her. I love that she changes his ideas, makes him question everything, and gets him to smile. They’re developing such a nice rapport, bickering and all, that’s reached a level of comfort and trust that’s great to see. Good developments on all fronts, and a nice place to be at the halfway point in the series.

"the original idea for Faith" - What do you mean exactly?
And "Faith" and original... Hm.. I had a "what the..." moment? I even wandered if I was seeing "Arang". Dead people vanishing into thin air - but then I had the puzzle solved - CY was forecasting the fight. Or Trying to.

Seeing the original trailer makes me more happy than sad. Yes, probably it could have been a great drama - the directing and the visuals seem really good, but Kang Ji Hwan didn't impress me much neither in "Lie to Me", nor in "Coffee House" and I had me share of blood for a few good years in all the four episodes that I could resist to watch from "Dr. Jin". I am so happy with the actual king/ queen story, Ki Chul's machineries and his facial acting and Auntie Choi - CY reelationship more than anything, that I don't feel we lost so much to have a good reason to miss the original.
However, I'd like to watch a movie like the one promissed in the trailer. Who knows, they should consider reducing the length.
All in all, there is no reason and no use in crying over the spilled milk!

Hi M.D.,

I really like your perspective. I hadn't thought of it that way. To be honest, KJH did not impress me either in LTM and I didn't see Coffee House, so I wouldn't know. I didn't necessarily like the ketchup squirting-like fake blood in that trailer, so I can see what you mean.

I would say that I did like the feel of the trailer, it was darker, but I don't know what the script had in store, so I will reserve my judgment on that. I do like that in this version of the drama, the traveler is female (the doctor), not male, and so she is actually the leading character, because the story is a lot about her. LMH's character is important and a strong one, but part of me also feels that he is there to play a supporting role to her character (KHS), a very strong supporting role, mind you. I know that their stories are equally important, but originally, the story was about the doctor. I am glad that for once, the lead is female.

I, like you, do like (a lot) all the side characters and how they play their roles, except for microwave lady, who I personally find to be too flirtatious in a slimy way. her flirting with CY, I can understand and see the reason why (and his response to her reinforces that he is not interested in women since his last girlfriend died, until ES shows up). Her flirting with flute guy makes me feel yucky. He is supposed to be her "brother" and I am not sure I understand (actually, I don't understand) why they (the writers) have her behaving like that towards him. I just don't get it. There is a scene (in the last episode or episode 10, I don't remember clearly) where she hugged him, and it felt creepy to me. It wasn't just that she was hugging him, it was HOW she hugged him: in a sensuous and slithery way (that's how it felt like to me). When I saw that scene, I thought: "what is this and why is this scene here? (as in, what was the point of that scene.")

If I were to contrast that scene with the scene where ES and JB hug, I would say there were big differences. JB and ES did not hug in a yucky way, they were barely touching each other, and it was like a respectful touching and one could tell that sensuality and sex were not on their mind. So, I was OK with that scene. It felt appropriate within the episode and within the story.

I personally liked the magical powers (or fantasy like powers) dr. Jang Bin had in the original script, he did more based on that trailer and he seemed to have had a more prominent role. I wish they could have kept that aspect of things in this version of the drama.

I will end by saying that like many, I did have to adjust my expectations as I watched this drama. I was expecting something close to the original trailer, and we got this. Once I relaxed my expectations, I was OK.

I am sorry, it should have been: "for those of you who are wondering" not "for those of you who wondering," for some reason, I didn't see my mistake.

@Ivoire, WOW, so someone has actually made a name in honor of you (Ivoireisdabitxh), to berate you and call you names? That is really disgusting. Maybe you can contact the owners or moderators of the site and see if it is possible to get that IP address blocked!

Hi LoveIt,

WOW! was my initial reaction as well, followed by: "Please, tell me how you really feel about me, (even though to be honest, you don't know me)."

I find it sad that some people feel the need to hide behind the anonymity that the internet provides to do things such as this. You would think that they would want to utilize their time in a better way? I guess not... I thought about contacting JB or GF, but I want to wait and see how this will be handled.
I know that sometimes, comments are not posted on the blog right away because they are awaiting moderation. I know that because it has happened to some of my comments, and to someone else in last OT or 2 OTs ago. I know that JB and GF read our comments and so, I am hoping that they will read this or see this and let's see what happens. If I don't see any reactions from them in a day or two, then I might contact them.

Out of curiosity, would this constitute "cyber bulling?" I always see it being associated with teenagers, but it has to start somewhere, right? Would this (calling me the "B") be considered cyber bulling or a form of it? (would be thankful for an answer or two).

@ LoveIt,
You actually managed to make me laugh with:" a name in honor of you," (that was funny), except, some honor that is... I am not sure I want it :-)

0

@Ivoire, if it becomes continuos, it would be considered cyberbullying. Is this the only post?

PS. I am happy you kind of got a laugh out of my "in honor" of you comment, because that was my intent. You must have have made quite an impression and constantly on their mind for them to do that ;). If it were me I would flip my hair, throw my head back and laugh. lol

0

@ LoveIt,

Yes, as far as I know, this is the first time I see that kind of post. I loved everything you said in your response (thank you :-)!) and I agree with all that you have said.

I loved especially this: "If it were me I would flip my hair, throw my head back and laugh. lol" So well said!!!! I wear my hair short, so flipping it would be funny, but I get what you are saying :-))

Oh god. Please don't say the trolls have made there way to DramaBeans as well!
I liked the fact that the crowd here are witty and mature (when you're not hilariously perving).
There's actually smart convos about dramas.

@ slfowie,

LOL, you actually managed to make me laugh. Can I just say this? "I love you!" It had not occurred to me to have such a perspective, but I think that you are right, I might as well embrace it, huh?
I especially liked this: "you actually have your own haters like all the stars have… :-)." What a way to find out how "famous" and how "awesome" I am... (by being called out of my name, and such a demeaning name at that).

Thank you (all) for the love and support, I am truly touched by it.

P.S.: I think I answered your question here: 1.2 slfowie September 18th, 2012 at 8:53 pm in M.D.'s response. I hope you saw it. I still have to post my comment about this episode, I will do that later today or over the weekend.

0

@ Ivoire
Good to see you bounce back from the negativity! some wise person once said "let the haters hate" ( have no idea who said it though but makes sense). Yes i did see the answer, but being the lazy a** i am i did not reply.
That trailer has such a dark feel to it and the character is not something i think LMH will be able to play now. Nor would I want him to play such a dark character at his age. KJH not a really big fan of him, he is ok in my books. If the show or anything of it was made i would want another actor.
I don't know why but I would love to see the ahjussi who played LMH's dad in City Hunter be the warrior. I think he does roothless so well.. ( plus he is my ahjussi crush!)
P.S Ivoire love u 2!

Thank you for defending me and for actually reading my comments. I know how long winded I can be (more like how long winded I usually am) and so I appreciate that you actually enjoy reading my posts, because I do enjoy writing them and sharing in the love of Kdramas we have.

"WTH? Why would you say that?"
I am as surprised as you are about this and I know I have seen characters in dramas being called the "B" word on this blog, but not actually the people who participate on the blog. Well, either I was wrong about my assumptions, or that has changed.

Wow, Ivoire! I know this troll thing is annoying but did you not have an urge to laugh if that is the best someone can do? Seriously lame, right? That's my reaction to when someone calls me a bitch! Shake it off, and keep on posting! Aja! Fighting! ;)

0

Hello Mar,

Thank you for your piece of advice, I will take it. More than anything, I am curious as to what brought this on, but I guess I will never know. If someone has a problem with me, why don't they simply address it? I might learn something in the process, but maybe not with a troll, huh?

My first reaction was surprised, simply because I didn't expect it. And then, I smiled. To put one's energy in doing something like that, of well...

I will heed your advice and keep on posting, thank you for encouraging me :-)!

0

You're welcome! I do not always comment, but I enjoy reading long comments a lot! ^^ So thanks for writing them! :)

Yeah, Mar's right, we should just laugh it out! It is really lame now that I think of it! This person must be jealous of Ivoire's writing talents! So, here: :D :D :D !

Good morning GF,

And thank you for putting a smile on my face at 1:50am. Yesterday was a very challenging day for me, and when I saw this, I wondered if it was supposed to be the straw that would break my back for that day. I am glad I chose to not let it affect me the way that it could have (and maybe the way that it was intended to affected me). I guess since this is a public forum, things like this can happen.

I was also comforted and encouraged by the reactions this brought forth, not that I was seeking them, but it was nice. In the end, this experience brought another unexpected result: a personal message from GF, and a nice one at that. I couldn't have orchestrated it, so maybe I should thank whoever called me the "B" word? I don't think they realized this might happened, because from now on, on this page, this is what people will see, GF saying that "Ivoire Is Awesome" *Smiles pensively*

What I would say back is: "Girlfriday Is Daebak! :-)" Thank you for quickly remedying this situation.

Hi Ivoire, GF & All,

GF...great job handling the unsolicited opinions.

Calling someone names is so 2nd grade. Some people will never learn what our moms once taught us at some point in our childhood's lives that 'If you don't have anything nice to say....don't say anything at all.'.

GF, I love and always look forward to read your witty and funny recap. You're probably one of the most talented writer/journalist I've encountered:).

I also enjoy everyone's comments as it gives me a good laugh after a rough day of work.

Thanks all!

I like this episode. Too bad about the director though. What is his deal? It's not really good to watch scenes with obviously bad directing. *cringe* I feel a lot of sympathy towards the actors and writer(s) if the director has a different vision of the material. Nevertheless, I actually like Faith a lot and even if I'm not really satisfied with some things and wish for what might have been, I'm still quite thankful that LMH as usual is doing and looking great. Plus I like the heroine and other supporting characters too.

I really like this drama because, up until know, I think this drama is about how the characters evolve and become what they should be and how 'history' remembers them. That being said, I would love to see a little more planning in the plot department. I don't feel like I'm dying to see what happens next because the writing feels... lazy? I don't know how to express my feelings.

BUT, I do know that I cry every time I see the editing and directing of this drama!!!!!!! OS@UH(*UFBP&Ugf837P7G*&g*d@boHU9 Why?! Why can't you put a lot more effort in your work, PD?! WHY?!

The opening sequence with the fight was just awful and amateurish. Painful to watch really. And this is why you hire actors who can do a minimum of stunts themselves (at least the pauses) and/or a good editor who can do smooth transitions between actors faces and stuntmen wide shots. I thought I was in Dr Jin. Not a good thing at all...

Oh, did you see the kind of slithery thing they had Ki Chul doing in that opening scene (not the imagined one)? I lol'ed so hard and thought of Orochimaru from the first (2nd?) season of Naruto. Although now that I think of it, both baddies are compared with snakes all the time, so maybe it was a snake-like move? If it was, then credit to the show. (I'm pretty sure it wasn't.)

It's actually sad how beautiful the first fight scene could have been and what it turned out to be. A similar fight between Chun and Yeo Woon in WBDS is just so amazing that i can rewatch that scene so many times.

And i wish her hat hadn't flown off the way it did. I would have been able to overlook it if she just appeared hatless rather than see that scene.

But the story is really nice. And i look forward to it a lot... i just have that 'what-could-have-been' because the writer is pretty good. I loved that "living is not just not-dying" bit. Thought it was quite profound for a warrior.

and the chemistry is awesome as usual. I think they should show more of LMH. that's where thier strength lies.

I really don't think they know what to do with CY. After having to change their original script, I think they are grasping at straws with how to implement the character, which is why we have seen so little of him.

The fight scene was almost like parody of what the fight scene should look like. I really felt embarrassed for the actors, while I watched it. Please don't mention the scene with the hat. OMG, I felt like I was watching some cheesy Danielle Steel cheap made for tv/lifetime show. Ugh!

This show better be glad the actors are so great, because they pull you into the story even though the director is doing such a god awful job.

Required fields are marked *

This might seem like a stupid question but humor me. Why did they have to change the script because they changed the actor? Did they think Lee Min Ho would not be able to act to that extent or was it related to legal issues?

And yes, the actors are doing such an awesome job that they make you forget the awful directing...at least for a while.

0

Required fields are marked *

They didn't change the script because of Lee Min Ho. They had actually offered him the script 2 years ago and he passed on it. They changed the script because of Dr. Jin, or so it is rumored. Also they had budget issues, and couldn't make the visually "epic" drama that they intended to make in the beginning.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Lee Min Ho was not their first pick. Two yrs ago the lead role was offered to Lee Jun-ki but he left for the military. Then it went to Kang Ji Hwan and thats why he is in the original trailer. Kang Ji Hwan had to drop out too due to some kind of dispute (forgot who it was with). Lee Min-ho then stepped in around April of this year and thats when they had to make some ajustment with the scripts because they blew some of their budget already shooting in 3D with KJH.

0

@Kiara, I didn't say he was their first pick, but he was also offered this role 2 years ago. He just didn't want it then. Someone posted the link to the article discussing this in one of the earlier episode discussions. I am also well aware of the other people who didn't want the drama either. Clearly there were issues from early on.

0

I definitely missed that one. I wonder why he decided to do it with only a few months to train and prepare for the role.

0

Another indication of script issues imo, is the fact that they aren't showing any previews this early in the drama. This indicates to me that they are not getting the script ready in time to film anything outside of the episodes that we see that week. Which is also a bad sign for the drama, because if they don't have a script ready, do they even know what will happen from week to week?

It kind of makes me sad because the actors and fans deserve better, and the director needs a swift kick in the rear.

0

Required fields are marked *

Thank you for clarifying that. Sadly, they had nothing to worry about regarding Dr. Jin. Watching a Caterpillar metamorphosize into butterfly was more interesting (and easier to comprehend) than that Weapon of Mass Confusion.

Oh, NO!...anything but that. I'll take the awful directing and the sub-par fight scenes but not the live-shoot. That is a line I'm not ready to cross again. I've been burned twice already this year (RTP, BIG), not about to do it a third time. If that happens, I'm removing this show from my schedule and instead, I'm going to wait patiently for OUaT (they already finished their script) and Revenge to come back . Thankfully, I only have to wait eleven more days!

0

Yes! The no-preview things has been worrying me since it started ... and I think the drama is showing clear signs of live-shooting (on top of the bad directing/editing from earlier). I keep seeing unfocused camera shots (or wobbly shots) and bad lighting. Many scenes look super rushed. The terrible action scenes *sob* are probably also a clear indicator for how they're constantly running out of time - good fight scenes take 12hrs or more to shoot (judging from what I read about Arang and VP2)

0

Another casualty of poor direction and tight scheduling is the music. One of the things that made the hat-flying-off scene so unintentionally funny was that there was absolutely no background music at that point. In fact, there was no music for long stretches of this episode, which is fine for a realistic drama, like a gritty police procedural or something, but in a fantasy time-travel sageuk, you need the music to help you with that "willing suspension of disbelief".

0

the director get's one thing right though: MANY shots of LMH's profile... b e a u t i f u l. I simply love his new grayish outfit and could look at him from the side all day long.

0

Have you notice that they also do it right with the lighting (the way it falls on his face), more so on the stills and pictures than in the drama itself. If you go to viki and click on videos, (once you are on the Faith page), look closely at the 2nd picture of LMH and KHS and you will see what I mean, I think. I have seen that in pictures as well. Go look, and tell me what you think.

Agree. They kept the original characters but changed the story completely and now they are stuck: What to do with 2 Doctors in your script when you decided NOT to show medical scenes (I want to see the magic needles!). And a warrior who in fact is played by an actor with 0 sword skills? Really, the secondary characters (king/queen/lady) can be thanked cause they are keeping the boat afloat.

CY has sword skills is good enough according to the people who train him. But considering this is his first sageuk he needed to be in the hands of a very capable director, which is clearly not the case. He also needs plenty of time to execute the scenes, which they don't have. I really can't blame it on the actor.

Since our body can only work at a specific temperature, anything lower than that, we might go into shock and die.

The thing I love the most about ES and CY is that their relationship isnt about the romance. Im sure we all know its headed there, but the fact we get to be there on the journey is cool. And the fact that he falls first is always fun.

Can somebody please clarify why Young look so exhausted after killing those 6 assasins with ease (at least from what is shown to us)? He does not seem to struggle at all, yet he seems to be at the end of his strength...
Also, the scenes that are sort of like fake-outs, where we see th fight but then it wasn't, could it be that Young actually has another superpower that lets him see the future -- just a little bit?? (or is he just such a great warrior that he can predict which way a fight will go?) I am a bit confused, but thought that maybe this is what made him so exhausted at the end?
so I don't think that the three assassins at the end were so fast that they disappeared on Young, but I think that was his "vision" (or whatever it may be) which happens pretty much exactly the same way, just a moment later... what does everyone else think?

0
3

Required fields are marked *

He's exhausted because he hasn't completely healed from Ki Chul freezing his hand. His body is trying to heal but Choi Young is channeling all that energy into fighting super fast assassins. It takes a toll.

0

Required fields are marked *

i think that too, that he have some of vision thing they give hints about that on this ep maybe that what make him so exhausted and maybe he should not use it but he have do it this time and i think it right cause everything on this drama so far has meaning that always reveals aftar few ep's so we just have to wait and see .

Required fields are marked *

I felt the same confusion. I actually went back to see if I had missed a scene. As you said, they show him killing the assassins with ease. Why is his hand bleeding?

It must be from the wounds when he faught with KC that he didn't tell the Doc about?

I don't know if Choi is seeing the future, or readying himself for the fight to come. Musicians and athletes do the same thing - imagine yourself going through the whole routine successfully before beginning.

just two words "good jop" this ep fall on my heart so all you have to do its just going on ,and walking the same road on the next ep's . just love everything there and make me want more and dont want to wait even one day , but if they work more on the action side i will say it was perfect ,cause sorry but the action side didn't seem real to me and CY need more work to make me think that he really fighting there , but he really good on the romance side i can feel his pain and confuse and every step on his thinking just by looking on his face and ES go for it girl you now the really doctor and person we want , you even now were you stand and what you should do ,and more important you now have CY on your heart and mind and trying to save him not just from death but from living like a death person .

Ha! This episode was much better. My side still hurts from laughter. It was hilarious how Noguk asked the unmarried Aunt Choi about relationships and she, in turn, transferred the question to the married Eunuch. Poor guy. And the way they high-tailed it out of their without meeting Gongmin's eyes? Priceless!

The directing still continues to be a problem, no matter how hard I'm trying to overlook it. Everything falls apart during the fight scenes. What happened to what was show in episode one? That was much better than the recent fights. Is it due to the scheduling and filming? Do they not have as much time to spend learning the fighting sequence? I would not mind if they took a two week break to get their mojo back.

I can't wait to see what happens next.

Something is definitely fishy about this show.
It was SO good up to the 8th episode, then everything just fell apart. This drama has just lost its direction, nobody can predict where it is going.
I think the team is unlucky with the director who seems to have some major financial problems. I have looked upon him in the internet, he seem to have a weird personality.
I feel pity for the actors, who are desperately trying not to lose face. Such a blow for LMH and KSH, especially for KSH, she had not filmed for 6 years, now is paired with a much younger actor, the script is falling apart, she must feel really bad. Her career might be shaken here.
As for LMH- well, we can just enjoy watching his handsome face , of course, but it is better if his hero says something sensible. Right now I don't get, why CY suddenly became so shy and embarrased around Eun-soo? Where is his frontal attack?
This romance will rather absurdly transform into some sort of pure friendship, I am afraid.
Honestly, while watching the last 3 episodes I felt nothing but embarrassment.

After watching every episode, I go here to seen your comments. I love your witty way of recapping each episodes and how you make us understand some of the underlying points in the plot.

anyhoo, I love this episode because finally there's a progress between our couples. Young and Eun Soo finally reached an understanding....lol but not in a very romantic way. I mean they are partners *coughs* it means something right? babysteps but still cute. especially young, i love seeing him like this. caring for someone... i just hope that the dead ex fiancee wont resurrected. and omoooo the king and queen is freaking hilarious.. I wish them a cute baby prince but not at this time because its still messy as a murky mud.

The plot is really thickening. I hope the king's uncle is with the good guys but hey, its ok. more bad guys equals more fun. the whole time travelling gist gives me headache. what is eun soo's main role here? will she be the one who makes history or she's gonna change it...

i hope she'll take young back to the future ;)

I kind of agree with you, but I don't blame those that are being hard on the show either. How are you going to promote an epic fantastical drama, and can't even get your fighting scenes right? I'm rooting for Faith too, but if the directing doesn't get better, I won't pretend to be surprised that people aren't tuning in. There is only so much the actors, production team, and writers can do if the directing is lacking so much!

Seriously they have stunt doubles and their fighting scenes still come out looking like this? I just don't understand. The actors are the only reason why I still watch this show. Their story lines and relationships far exceed the epicness we are supposed to feel from the super powers(which extends to fighting scenes).

I don't know in America but in Asia like Singapore, Malaysia, Hongkong, south korea, there is this TV rating thing, if the original Faith trailer kind of fighting would be considerred too bloody and violent to pass for TV screening and end up being edited....
Let's don't compare it with any epic production and just appreciate it as a light hearted time travel show...

You're right. *sigh*. I'm probably the one who's being unfair. The fight scenes in this show are so painful to watch and I feel like the rest of it should be grander and more... just more. Ah GirlFriday, your recaps are FABULOUS! Now I wait to read your recaps before seeing the episodes, there is so much detail and nuance that would otherwise be missed. Do I miss these details due to reading the subtitles, or simply because I lack the insight? Either way, with your insightful recaps I am truly enjoying this series. Thank you for your efforts.

Yeah, is the uncle a goodie or a baddie? Nice twist at the end. This was a dang sweet episode. I'll admit I have been a fickle fan lately, wondering if the writers are going to get to all the things that make kdramas so addictive! Like blossoming romance (check), good guys pulling ahead (check), bad guys showing weakness - Gi Cheol fearing his immortality and shorting out with sparks and sputtering like a 1960s low budget sci fi autobot movie, hilarious (check).

I'm also worried with Choi Young breathing heavy, dripping blood and dropping down after kill #6. What's really going on? And I still wonder how the time travel part will affect Choi Young and Eun Soo's romance, which I want to work out so badly!

I also wonder whether Gongmin's uncle is on the good or bad side. From his simple getup, he doesn't look like the type to covet wealth or power. I suspect the diary he has handed to Eun Soo isn't the complete set. In Epi 11, something fell out of the diary when Ki Chul took it out of the small chest.

My gut reaction is to like the uncle. But then, is it a trick? After all, we saw him with the unpleasant pledged brother/sister team, and the uncle's poetic speak confused them so easily that it was amusing. Can't wait for episode 13. I hope CY gets a break from killing - that's all he's been doing lately and the poor guy needs a mental and physical rest, dont you think? After assassin kill # 7, that is. Also wanting more CY/ES togetherness time, uh huh!

The ratings are low compared to other LMH starrers. Maybe they are not digging the historical story. I hope the ratings pick up, though. If not, are they going to still have 24 episodes? Also, the actress is much older than LMH. I hope they pair him with somebody his age. He is too good looking [in fact beautifully handsome and very photogenic] and talented. Like #26 I got hooked on Kdramas because of Minho when I saw him in Boys Over Flowers, and the rest, as they call it, is history. I thought he was the most talented among the boys and I was right. He was the one who shined the most. Well, I still like Faith no matter what. I just love watching him.

I'm concerned about the ratings, too! I checked LMH's past dramas. Faith's pilot episode rated almost the same as CH (based on AGB Seoul: CH 11%, Faith 10.8%). Surprisingly, Personal Taste came out stronger at 13.8%. CH had been going back and forth 13 and 14% and was only able to hit 15% by Episode 10. Faith's highest episode so far is 13.5% (Ep.6) and it's episode 12 already. Again, surprisingly, Personal Preference never went below 11.8% but also never went beyond the 15% mark.

I do not even dare to start discussing BOF's ridiculously high ratings. They're like the rating gods. The rating of all ratings.

The Faith promo team really need to do more publicity and highlight the blooming romance to get more people on board. It really saddens me!

There's a glimmer of hope when it comes to raising the ratings! The leader of the Mon-Tues 9:55 time slot is Golden Time (MBC), followed by Faith (SBS) and Haeundae Lovers (KBS). BUT Golden Time has only 2 more episodes left. After this, I hope viewers transfer to Faith. (Sorry, I'm too invested in the figures being a media researcher. Haha.).

This was a fun episode but about the end...I just assumed that the diary that he gave her was the early one (i.e. the blank one that Eun sol writes in that will eventually be "Hwata"'s diary)...but in that case the guy is a cheap gift giver. He should have given her another vase. That's where the real money is at.

When Ki Chul was losing it in his hot bath treatment, I really felt..okaaaaaaaaay, stuff just got real! Ki Chul's passion is really riled now. No more playing around, he is royally pissed.

Loved the "partner" scene...because what with the vow and now with the definition of partnership, Choi's mind can only see this as a kind of betrothal...the same kind of personal-but-not-quite-legal "betrothal" he had with Mae Hee... vows and committment and well...subtext of marriage.

In real life, I don't think the actress is that much older than LMH...it's just that we humans are so trained to see beautiful women as being a particular youthful age that anyone over 25 just seems old to us. But even if she seems older than he is, I like the noona vibe. Choi Young is still a youth and inexperienced in love and the mother-figure thing is also subtly present.

Totally loved the bickering scene and the eunuch scene.

How many assassins were there? I kinda lost count. And, seriously, those are the most obvious assassins I've seen in a while. What's with the matching outfits?

I thought the entire situation where Eun Soo dressed like a guy from last episode to this was so funny. Shows how silly it would be for a woman to actually dress like a guy and disguise herself back in the day. I didn't mind the hat flying off her head. I thought the director was just showing her haste to rescue Choi Young. Hat could have flown off in a more romantic way, I guess but it's not something to get too worked up about.

Didn't something fall out of the Diary before? Is the entire diary there?

So glad Choi Young is falling in love again and acknowledging it. When he put up the red ribbon, I was like... yes, LIVE!

love your analysis, Carole!

I also much appreciated seeing KC's vulnerable side. so glad he usually wears that fancy hair net ... he looked super scary with his hair down! His personal motivation for coveting the doctor (fear of dying) makes him a very interesting villain in my book. It's not 'just' power he wants - it's something far more fundamental. I'm also intrigued by the fact that he is that strong? I'm not sure I fully understand whether CY gave his all, though (and is, therefore, weaker than KC) - or whether he just wanted to execute his plan of stabbing him by stabbing himself and therefore needed to let KC believe that he has the upper hand.

I actually went back and counted the assassins (when they walk through the forest in ep11). I counted 7. So he has one more to go up against. Curious to see how they are going to continue that storyline - I think CY is in need of a lot of doctory care after this!!

The partner scene: one of the best so far, definitely the best between the two (+ the bickering). The noona vibe is actually what makes me enjoy this pairing. Currently, it's her who is moving things along. This episode did a good job in showing how he is allowing himself to open up to her.

Something fell out of the diary, yes, and we were reminded that not everything's in the diary when KC opens his treasure box and takes out the diary. A slip of paper remains inside.

So right, kakashi, about the fundamentals of his villainy. He's fighting the gods, kinda like the Big Bad in Arang is fighting the gods. I so love that. Fighting destiny, fighting fate..and fate has assigned death to you...what to do? A part of me would say "well stop fighting the king and befriend him...but then history has him marked for dead so even if he befriends the king...deaths' gonna come."

One more assassin, uh? Dang! And he's kinda sitting there just waiting...and bleeding.

I think it's interesting that Ki Chul is the one wrestling with whether it's possible to change fate. In a lot of dramas, like QIHM, it's the good guys who are busy with the existential questions, while the bad guys' sole focus is how to win the immediate confrontation. That's not to say that Ki Chul isn't also focused on how to win the immediate conflict with the king.

I also get the feeling that he might have some chronic illness. Why else all the baths in the beginning even though he hadn't been using his powers? Well, hadn't as far as the viewers were shown that is.

She's at least 10 years older than him. I have no problem with it, and the story acknowledges the disparity, but that's a pretty big age difference. I can see why some people don't like the pairing even if the reaction is a bit knee jerk. My main complaint is the lack of chemistry but I don't think the age difference is necessarily to blame.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think that's what bothers me about folks complaining about her age..the kneejerk quality of it all. I see a lot of kneejerk reactions to things on drama recap blogs..and I want to say "Really? Really??? How mature are you? Let it GOOOOO!"

So I don't mind the age difference. Everytime I see some age discrepancy thing, I think the writers are trying to battle the ingrained Korean culture thing that pretty much forbids friendship between folks of different ages. It's very rare in Korean culture to think of an older person as a friend if one is younger, (it happens but it's rare) --much less a love relationship. But Korean dramas have a lot of those relationships.

I kinda wish the worship of beauty would drop from all cultures as well cause sometimes it's like...."What?Extremely Beautiful women are always gonna get the extremely hot guy? Or the regular looking guy will get the extremely hot girl? But why can't the ugly and/or fat girl get the hot guy?" Okay..off my soapbox now.

I also have no problem with the LMH/KHS duo.
Whatever it is that makes a compelling pairing, they have it.

What the director, or LMH is getting right is the way he actively looks at her - in unguarded moments, and now, more and more when everyone else is around.

His task has been to be a sheep dog guarding the most errant of the herd. At any second he knows she could get away from him again and he'll have to go chase her down again. Problem is Choi has not been able to control ES from the beginning. His usual threats don't work, plus he can't kill her. This is driving him crazy. Remember when he had to pick her up and carry her out early on?

Because ES is no sheep. She stabs him! She questions him as nobody dared before. She makes him think of everything from a new perspective. Suddenly, along with containing her body, he felt he had to convince her that he wasn't a completely heartless murderer, even if he had to kill to be a good warrior.

Through his gaze, we see him trying to estimate and move her opinion of him. He seems to approach each encounter with her like a skirmish, prepared to do or say whatever is necessary to keep her close by. He even admits this when he finds her trying to run away - he didn't know if he should drag her back, or persuade her with words.

I love how the sheep dog's job of guarding her started his interest in her as a person, but now it has become more than that. Not sure if this is a romance yet either. But they definitely want to see and hear each other as much as possible to find out.

I like LMH-KHS pairing too. And I love their dynamics. And how he can never keep her quiet and obedient. It's the way she messes up with his plans that is messing up his heart.

Right now, they're partners. The don't necessarily think they love each other yet but they certainly care for each other a lot. I'm just gonna wait patiently for the lightbulb moment for them both.

They don't have chemistry? lol I think they have tons of chemistry. I love that we can see the strangers with no initial attraction fall in love over 24 episodes. You can actually see it happening. It is quite different from dramas where the 2 have instant chemistry, like the king and queen (even the bickering shows hidden emotions/love) or arang and the magistrate (who had instant cuteness kinda sexual energy from their very first meeting).

I actually love this about CY and Eun Soo, and it makes me appreciate their pairing much more. DO you know how hard it is do what they have done and are doing? Go from zero love chemistry to a budding one? It is darn near impossible to find in kdrama land.

The whole hand scene in the first part of this episode oozed cuteness and butterflies. It was done very well by the actors. The bickering in front of everyone was so different from the bickering they did from the episodes prior. They make a very good pairing and I never think about their age difference while I am watching them in a scene.

I also don't get a noona vibe. What i see is a 21 century woman who is free from the ideas of the proper way a woman should act in the "olden days", and a general who is so used to having his way not knowing how to deal with this new species of woman hahaa. I think they are adorable.

Love your comment.

Plus this: "I love that we can see the strangers with no initial attraction fall in love over 24 episodes. You can actually see it happening."

makes me want to go back and watch from the beginng.

Their attraction is so the-opposite-of-surface.
They do not matchy-match at all, but are perfect intellectually and emotionally.

Not that she's fake ugly, or so much older than him.
If she had the meek, eyes-down manners of a Goreyo woman (not a warrior woman -they are never typical) CY would appreciate her for her beauty, but he wouldn't be drawn to her.
Did they have gisangs yet? I could see if he did frequent such places of leisure, how CY would end up seeking someone out with her personality rather than a shyish woman.

0

Chemistry is highly subjective. You see chemistry, I don't... ah well, the world goes on! Like I said before, it's not about age at all. If we took LMH back to the 90s when KHS was in her heydey, I don't think we'd see chemistry either. I don't recall her having chemistry with many of her leading men.

0

Good comment. I don't mind the age difference. It's always an issue when a woman's age>man. ES was so annoying to me in the beginning but she's now growing on me. I think they have a lot of chemistry now. I enjoyed the bickering in front of the royals, haha. ES is a handful and probably why Choi likes her. She woke him up from his 5 yr funk, haha.

0

"What i see is a 21 century woman who is free from the ideas of the proper way a woman should act in the “olden days”, and a general who is so used to having his way not knowing how to deal with this new species of woman hahaa. I think they are adorable."

This is what I get while watching also. I kind of missed that she didn't carry her purse around this episode. I love that detail b/c it screams modern, capable woman, and it is so out of place.

0

Noona vibe is a lotta different things. A woman who is older and who causes a certain reversals of certain relational roles. Whether it's obedient woman to guy or sheep dog to sheep, a noona causes the general to deal with a woman who fascinates him because she knows more about certain things than he does. If she hadn't been a doctor or older than him, she would have pretty much obeyed everything he said when she came to his world. But as an older woman, she is not going to take his guff. Older women know their minds. A 21st century 21-year old would've listened and obeyed everything he said.

0

So much, definitely! There are so many things that go into creating chemistry. She knows more than he does, but she also knows less. Cause she's in his world. So there is the protection factor. Protector/Protectee is one aspect of the chemical mix.

There is also the guilt factor. He brought her into this mess. She wouldn't be here if he hadn't brought her to the past. Guilt is a bitch...and that enters the chemical mix.

Plus there is the fact that she is definitely his type. He seems to always have liked tough non-submissive women...like Mae Hee. He isn't shown as having a love life with a regular maiden or submissive peasant girl.

Plus there's the noona thing. The older woman who knows herself and has her own job and doesn't listen to
men simply because they are men. She's a doctor! And women doctors have to fight to get where they are...if they want to be successful. They don't take crap. If Choi had captured a young 21st century girl, the girl might not have had the personality to deal with him. But female doctors have their own strength and they are mighty willful.

So all these issues are creating a kind of chemistry unique for them.

Chemistry is definitely subjective...and it involves all kinda stuff in the mix: in this case, guilt, worry, respect. Also, there is the understanding of hearts issue. Ki Chul doesn't seem to see that there is no real chemistry between him and his friends/pledged siblings. He doesn't see their hearts although he wants it.

One person can notice two people falling in love while other folks watching those same folks simply see nothing and then suddenly say, "Dang, I didn't know you guys were even falling in love"

Haw Su In sees/understands that Eum Ja likes her. Auntie Choi, the royals, and the Wooldachi understand the Choi/doctor chemistry. Everyone kinda understands the king/queen chemistry. And then there is the ultimate chemistry mix: the king and the country...and how they'll get together.

I finally lost faith in Faith. I struggled with ep 6 and then picked up watching ep 7 and 8. I actually enjoyed ep 9 because for once something exciting was happening, what with the king turning the tables on the bad guy. Then came ep 10 which was such a letdown. Does the producer really have to portray the WDC as a group of soldiers who only have brawn but not brains? And shouldn't by now someone discover that a mole must have been planted within their midst (referring to the servant maid with the King's lady)? I rest my case if someone has done so and I congratulate that person because I stopped watching 10 minutes into ep 11.

I started out watching the show namely for LMH. But what ended up as interesting for me is the interaction between the king and his lady. And Kim Hee Sun's acting because I didn't think she is much of an actor before I watched this drama. It still strikes me as a weird pairing between LMH and KHS because one looks much older than the other (the co-stars for Rooftop Prince also differ greatly in age but still manage to look so cute together, you can't tell their age difference much).

I think much of the blame has to go to the producer and I really wonder how the show is gg to pull through all the way to ep 24. Maybe when I have run out of nice dramas to watch or my faith has been slightly restored, I may return to giving Faith a second chance.

But I'm glad Eun-soo and Choi Young finally reached an agreament, now I want to see the general teaching our girl how to fight and defend herself - mostly because it'll be funny/cute/hot to see them together more often :)

Finally, with these 2 last episodes, I'm rather glad to see improvements in the storyline even if there is still some work to do. Does anyone have noticed that CY's arm and leg were wounded in the fight against KC, Yet, ES only tended to his hands afterwards! Same thing with the final fights against the assasins: CY managed to kill the 6 of them pretty easily so, why is he so exhausted at the end?

I was grinning and lol-ing at this episode. So so so happy cheerful ES is back. My wish was granted! Cheerful ES always surprises and delights CY. (and me!)

I actually notices all the directing fail in this episode which is really sad. I actually LOVE the story and the actors and keep wishing that the director don't spoil it so much. Gawd, the pathetic fight scenes. The first two episodes were pretty good, the it went spiraling downwards from there. I never place high expectations for engaging fight scenes in kdramas but still I expected "tolerable".

The fly-away hat was just so "awkward". And I got confused with his fight with chilsa too. He's got 6 out of 7 already, and what little fight scenes we saw actually showed that he's dealing with them okay. So why all the bleeding? Was his wound from KC that bad? Or the fights were actually more taxing than was shown? If so, the editor really need to be sacked. Sigh.

Anyway, they should just stick to the emotional threads. It's what this drama does best anyway.

I have to admit that Faith has been somewhat disappointing from its original hype. Still, it's one of the shows that I'm most anxiously waiting to watch every week to see what happens next.

Problem wise, I think that the pacing is incredibly slow. For those of us that find that the 16 episode K Dramas are the ideal length to tell a story, the extra 8 episodes just screws up the pacing. Essential, the vibe I get from Faith is like it is a 16 episoder stretched out for 24 episodes. Episodes 1 and 2 were pretty tightly packed and really got me interested but then it just slowed way down.

Dire directing really doesn't bother me that much. Much prefer poor directing of a crackling good plot to style over substance. And please... no calls to change directors/ writers mid way through, cos we all know how well that usually pans out...

Gongmin too and I wonder if it's just an optical illusion created by nature or it's a deliberate attempt by the director.

I'm hating LMH now. Faith has been INCREDIBLY boring and yet I'm unable to drop it just because of him. I can't believe how silly this story seems to me. It's the horribly slow pace, the weak characters, the unbelievable situations, everything!

How come a prince can kill a lot of innocent citizens and basically kidnap the queen and the royal doctor and still hope to get away with it? It's so absurd, if that's not high treason, what is??? Anyway if there is a perfectly good explanation for this in the last 2 eps please forget it, I haven't had the patience to go through them yet, if not please enlighten me!:)

I think they mentioned this in the early episodes. CY told the king that Ki Chul has thousands of men/soldiers under his command and the king only has his few Woodalchi warriors. Also Ki Chul has a lot of money and connections - his sister is the Yuan empress. He can basically go to war against the king and win or just have him replaced.

LOL at hating LMH.

I think the folks, me included, who fell in love with this show did so because of its heart, not its execution.
When you love something, you overlook the faults and just concentrate on the good stuff.
The best parts are how characters interact and feel about each other, not the fight scenes or the politics, or the repetitious plot cycles. Sagueks generally suffer from the same plot issues since real history is boring, with far less interesting people.

As boholAnna pointed out, 14th Century monarchs actually didn't have that much power in many countries in the world.

Both France and England had strong and weak kings, but all were pretty much run by those with the most power, which meant the most soliders, which meant the most money.
I know in Europe, you weren't anybody unless you could afford to feed and maintain both the army of people, and the horses. And mercenaries didn't hang around because they were loyal but paid.

when I decide which drama currently airing to watch and follow , I stick with it . There is only one this year that I dropped mid way . This being said I think this will be worth it in the end despite the directing , yes some of the sequences in the first 12 ep are well you know , but the real point of a great drama besides the story is, is it re-watchable I think the director is filming a movie here . If u marathon the whole drama (when it's over) it will be more cohesive story all together . Also a selling point for other markets

The world doesn't freeze at the sight of the ONE. Love is a process of getting to know, building rapport, and making that connection. It's not instant coffee or instant ramen we the 21st century drama viewers are so used to. In most dramas, the romantic pair become touchy feely/googly eyes before hitting episode 4. I am actually starting to think that those who find the romance build up boring and slow are the hopeless romantics who believe in fairy tales and love at first sights and THE ONE while those who dig the process-oriented romance the rational and more attuned to reality.

Yeah! I love how our two lead actors grow their feelings to each other. It's natural and logical!

I wholeheartedly agree with your comment. That's what excites me with the love story part of this drama, it isn't rushed but as you said, more attuned with reality.

Wow, so much age-discrepancy disdain when folks talk about the actor/actress pairing. It seems so kneejerk to dislike a couple because they are not the same ages...I'm reading some of these comments and wondering what world some folks are living in. Just seems so weird to me. Maybe I'm abnormal, i dunno. But I really think love can happen between anyone of any age, or status or race..or if one is from the 13th century and the other is from the 21st century.

Also, re: chemistry. Chemistry is chemistry. I might be seeing things (and i don't think I am) but I feel the chemistry between them. I feel it more from his side, because he seems more desperate to love. The only thing we know about Eun-soo's love life is she wanted a rich guy. She hasn't really had love on her mind all this time whereas it was all he had on his mind for so long. He was so overwhelmed with despair about love tht he was pretty much gonna fall in love with any woman who came his way. Also, he doesn't talk about his mother much and he and his aunt are good pals so it seems to me that he does have a kind of need for a girlfriend who might also be a strong mother-figure...and that's kinda how he behaves toward Eun-soo sometimes, with a kind of boyish deference. So he's ready to be smitten. She isn't quite ready yet. So the chemistry is just right, i think.

But that's just me.

I agree with you there. I also do believe that the reason she seems less 'interested' than LMH is because this isn't her time. She's possibly holding back simply because she knows that at some point she could be returning to her own time, leaving him behind (and history clearly stated that he dies late in life, so he definitely stayed behind... or maybe, someone assumed his identity and he left with her? But then, where does the diary fit in? Does she maybe return after leaving once? UGH!!!).
I think just knowing that this relationship is possibly not meant to be could be holding her back.

Agree with this comment although I do not see an age difference in their appearance. My god this actress is beautiful and young looking.

I see the age difference, but for some reason, it doesn't make me cringe (unlike in some dramas that I've seen). I'd say the actors have successfully managed to make me see and feel the persona of each character, such that I don't really care if one is older or beautiful. What I know is that I can place myself in their shoes and that makes me see how good they fit together.

I see how their characters have progressed -- and that's thanks to their great acting.

Carole, it's a loss cause arguing about the chemistry. Some viewers feel it, some don't.

Sometimes I wonder, do some commenters here actually watch every episode of this show? Because there are quite a bit of criticisms on the directing part or what could have been or should have been, but not many comments on the actual story itself.

Right now, we have two main plots moving in parallel, not yet converged.

1) The rise of the rightful king. The question of possession and trust from his subjects, in contrast with KC's determination to not give up that power or his "toys"

2) CY's and ES' converging paths. Prior to this episode, both wanting to leave their existing world through different approaches. ES wanting to detach from the history she's living in now by going back to "heaven", while CY looking for death as a way of escaping this voided world. As of Ep. 12 we see both paths converge They no longer feel like strangers, they are "partners". The time travel mystery is a conflict device to test that partnership and faith in the future (I think).

There are a lot of rich story elements in this show.

So true. I don't much think about what should have been --when it comes to the writing-- because I'm assuming what I think is lacking is gonna show up later. I trust the writers.

As for the directing, I am really not an expert in k-drama epicness so I'm not the best of judges. I'm easily pleased in that respect. I've seen a few stories where I think, "Dang, they shoulda done that with the camera!" But that's only when I see a really bad fail. So far, there hasn't been -- in my opinion-- so many really bad fails. But again, I don't know much about epic direction of epics.

And yes, mucho elements in this story. And (I posted this elsewhere to someone else) the ultimate chemistry we're after is the chemistry between the king and his country. Bad chemistry (between ki chul and his pledged siblings) and "falling in love" chemistry kinda pale to that. We want Goryeo free from the Yuans and we want the king to be loved and accepted in the "hearts" of his people.

Great comment. As for the chemistry thing, I'm seeing and feeling it and don't understand how others don't. So you're right, it's a lost cause arguing about it. Still trips me out, though, and wonder if we're watching the same show.

Both LMH and KHS are beautiful actors and good actors, and their characters' gradual coming together and growing love for each other is beautiful to watch.

Seems like the thing many want to do...talk about the shoulda coulda woulda's and not so much about the storyline. A pity, 'cause as you said, there really are a lot of rich elements in this show.
