Killer for hire goes rogue in A Company Man

So Ji-sub in a dark, dramatic role? What a surprise.

Here’s a look at his new action movie titled A Company Man, which has a trailer and some stills. It’s got an interesting premise to counter the ordinary-sounding title, and that contrast is the whole point: He seems like your ordinary salaryman employee, only the company’s in an unusual line of work — killing for hire.

The preview starts out with wearied, bleak-looking Ji Hyung-do (So Ji-sub), who seems like an everyday rank-and-file employee. The chyrons read, “Working late five days a week. Working outside the office, no time to rest. Suffering from work-related stress, I am an ordinary company man. It’s just that my company is a little unusual.” Bang! Down goes the hit.

The company operates under a manufacturing front, and Hyung-do is a section chief in its sales department. Which makes me wonder: Why does a contract-killer agency need a sales department? Is this world somehow getting less violent that you’d need to really market your product?

Lee Mi-yeon (Merchant Kim Man-deok) plays his love interest, and it’s because of her that Hyung-do wants out of the company to live an ordinary life. Too bad it’s a lot harder leaving the place than joining it, and that turns all his colleagues against him as they’re mobilized to off him.

Meanwhile, the maknae of idol group Ze:A, Kim Dong-joon, plays a part-time employee in Hyung-do’s department. You can kill on a part-time basis now? Looks like he’ll be one of the new foes who’s put on the hunt. You may recall Kim Dong-joon from that other assassin-for-hire project (though he’s on the other side of that gun barrel this time), Girl K, as the adorable high school boy with a crush on the high school killer.

A Company Man releases on October 18.

I wonder if this is more of a psychological thriller more than it is a killing people off (that we actually get to see, a la Gaksital) kind of movie. Or maybe it is both?...

SK movie land is piling up the good productions lately. And they never disappoint with those "black is black" movies (A bittersweet life, Man from nowhere, Kiss me kill me). Will keep that one in mind.

There is something charming about a killer wearing a nice suit. As if he respects his targets a tad bit more than if he wore some jeans and an old jacket :)

So true. That's why Won Bin also looked fine in Man From Nowhere. But it's So Ji Sub, we are talking about here, the man looked so hawt in suits (see ghost.)

Oh heck yes, I remember his character in that production and Kwang Hee must be a taaaad jealous. Glad to see him cast in this dark one too.

I'm still waiting for the day when he does a Rom-Com Drama/Movie. Kinda getting tired of the whole serious roles.

I think he has some Rom-com dramas before his I'm sorry I love you/WHIB days. And there was that Chinese movie, Sophie's Revenge, though he wasn't the main lead in that one.

Hated it too! He was barely in it! So why give him top billing!? I know why but I imagine a lot of people were upset about that lie

Exactly, when i first saw that it was coming out i though he was the lead, with how he was the center of everything, so u can understand my disappointment after watching it. So I'm just going to have to wait until he tries out Rom-Com. ^^

I totally agree with you. He has pretty much established his ability to play melo and suspenseful and needs a role with plenty of smiling and laughing. I will be so happy if he ever does a rom-com! I know there are more untapped facial expressions in you, SJS!

"I know there are more untapped facial expressions in you, SJS!" < I LOL'ed XD

I agree, he has established his ability in melo/suspenseful drama/movie, but we want to see a whole new size to him. I want him in a full out Rom-Com. I want to see him get out of his shell. That is what I'm waiting impatiently for.

So Ji Sub does a lot of melo/serious roles. But then he's good at it and it appears to suit his persona. When one of you suggested him doing a rom-com role, I tried to imagine that happening. The result - Nahh, doesn't work for me!!. His humor tends to be dry, subtle and a bit self deprecating. That surprisingly does not really fit well in the rom-com genre.

Got to admit liking his smiles and tattoos (wish he does roles that will display them more) and I'm not a tattoo type of person.

I do agree that SJS is very competent at those intense/angsty/macho roles but he seems to just have one mode of rather surface-level intensity that he displays in every. single. project he does. I'd have no problem with his sticking within a certain genre if he demonstrated a lot of varied types of acting within it, but he's always sort of one-note, no matter how good he is at playing that note, so I can never get very drawn into the characters he plays.
