Posters and stills for The Horse Healer

Here’s a look at the upcoming 50-episode medical historical drama The Horse Healer, starring Jo Seung-woo as a Joseon-era vet-turned-royal-physician. It’s the big anniversary drama from MBC (usually a sageuk but always a long-running banner drama that gets a big budget) from PD Lee Byung-hoon and writer Kim Yi-young of Dong Yi and Yi San. The posters are your standard fare, but everyone looks beautiful because, well, it’s a beautiful cast.

Jo Seung-woo stars as the affable hero who starts out as a lowly vet, rises to horse specialist, and then eventually to the highest medical profession of the time, as physician to the king. It’s got a pretty epic arc built into the premise, and though medical dramas aren’t my favorite thing, I do think the horse-to-king trajectory is pretty cool, and a nice twist on your regular ol’ doctoring-is-dramatic take in most dramas. It seems most like Dae Jang Geum (cook-to-first-female-royal-physician).

Lee Yo-won plays a woman who defies social norms and conventions, and spends a good deal of her youth dressed as a young man. She eventually becomes a doctor as well, and reunites with her first love (Jo Seung-woo). Lee Sang-woo is the wealthy son of a nobleman who also studies medicine. So poor hero who sleeps in stables and chaebol second lead, yeah? Lee Yo-won was his first love (of course) and he’s a mild-mannered progressive-thinking man. At least there are no jerks in this drama. Maybe there’s enough of those in the political wings of the cast that the doctor trio can be the nice guys.

Kim So-eun plays Princess Sook-hwi, fourth daughter of King Hyojong, little sister of King Hyunjong. She’s spoiled, but starts to change when Jo Seung-woo enters the palace as a physician, and falls in love with him. That’s our main love square, and the drama also stars Sohn Chang-min as Lee Sang-woo’s father and baddie, Yoo Sun and Lee Soon-jae as doctors, Han Sang-jin as King Hyunjong, and Jo Boa as a young widow and yet another love rival for Jo Seung-woo’s affections. That’s a lot of ladies, McHorsey. Well, if there’s anything I’ve learned from TV, it’s that doctors always make time for romance.

The Horse Healer premieres next Monday on MBC.

Jo Seung-wooooooo!!!! <3 <3 (I had to one-up you Kiara. : D )

These posters are gorgeous, and not just because of the beautiful people but because of the costumes (especially Kim So Eun's, wow!) Seriously, if the costumes look as luxurious and gorgeous in the show as they do in these posters, I may watch just for that.

I'm with you on not being that interested in medical dramas, especially not of the veterinary sort, but there's always a lot of potential for epicness, engaging storylines and fate-defying romances when it's a sageuk. At the same time 50 episodes is so long! I hope this does exceedingly well so that I'll have a reason other than JSW to try watching it.

Steamy Bun: the thing about "one-upping" is that it can always be "one-upped".

Jo Seung-wooooooo!!! <3 <3 <3

hehe

totally agree with you about the posters' costumes. if this drama consitently showcases this level of fashion...i'll invest in 50 episodes.

I'm probably the only one, but I find Yowon's acting so bland. She's not bad per se, but she lacks charisma imo. Her partners are always amazing though

No, you're not the only one! She's not a bad actress, but she lacks on screen presence + charisma. I want to like her, I just... can't.

Agreed. She's also not terribly beautiful so I wonder why, with so many pretty and talented actresses in the industry, she keeps getting some plum roles. Hmm.

I don't think looks should ever be considered as a requirement or a factor of a leading actress. Everyone has different standards of what "beautiful" should be. I personally think Lee Yo Won is charming in her own way.

My comment came off as a bit shallow but what I meant is that people tend to be famous in the industry for two reasons: looks or talent. In my very humble and personal opinion, LYW isn't all that talented. Usually, when that's the case, beauty can be compensatory - unfair, but that's life. It's just hard to explain her career if you don't see her falling in either category.

Exactly, but Jo Seung-woo, Lee Sang woo and even Kim So-eun I dont wanna miss. I'm excited to see some veteran actors in the mix like Sohn Chang-min. It has been years since I last saw him in a drama.

I'm glad the powers that be do not share your view because LYW is the main reason I will put myself through a 50 episode sageuk. I think she's wonderful, acting and look wise. :)

Yeah I'm just incredibly torn, I love Jo Seung Woo and Kim So Eun but this premise is so much like every other PD Lee Byung Hoon drama ever...and this is 50 eps, possibly longer if it becomes a ratings hit....also there's the fact that the Great Seer looks so much more exciting and interesting than this, making it the sageuk I'd much rather follow....darn it....this might be another Dong Yi like watch for me...watching the first 10-12 eps on ffwd and then giving up altogether

I'm sure you're not the only one since he's from a slightly older batch of actors as well as being more of a movie actor than a drama actor.

Allow me to recommend The Classic if you're at all interested in seeing what the fangirling is all about. I almost guarantee that that movie will make you fall in love with him!

Lee Yo-won!!! My favourite... loved her in all her drama. I like her acting because her acting is good... she doesn't overdo things when she doesn't need to. Like it's obvious she's held herself back when she was acting in 49 days because that's what the role required.

She has the most amazing luck! Always get the big roles in the anniversary drama...

She doesn't feature high in the looks department, but perhaps that's why she is chosen for some lead roles... you can't have the hot babes leading all the time...

I wish Kim So-eun would do a miniseries romcom. She's been doing daily/family/weekend dramas since BBF, and I'm dying to see her in something more my style.

You're not alone! The girl is such a catch and has so much potential. Since I first saw her in Boys over Flowers, I thought she must be big star by now. But too bad, her roles and dramas after BOF sucks bigtime! She always plays a mother, a wife and her partners are always an ajhusshi.

I'm also hoping that one day she will do a romcom miniseries and have a guy near her age. Maybe, Kim Bum perhaps! Its been ages and yeah! My SoEul heart never died. Haha! :D

I know. I hate the fact that she's constantly being paired with older men. I wish she'd be paired with someone her age in her next project. And yeah, it'd be perfect if she and Kim Bum would play the leads in a drama. It doesn't matter if it's a rom-com, melodrama, or action as long as they're in it together. I'm a SoEul die-hard fan as well. :)

They should take this to a whole new level and have the horse play the lead. Horse learns to talk from picking up speech patterns of the humans tending him. With sheer grit and determination, Horse gallops his way to success and into the heart of the leading lady.

So Lee Sang Woo's bound for heartache again? :(
Sigh.. I'm just hoping this'll be one of those dramas where 2nd leads can end up together after being rejected by the mains. I love Kim So Eun so I hope she's not the usual irritating second female lead, a bit spoiled like Princess Minhwa maybe (minus the unrepentant desire to do almost 'anything' for the sake of landing the guy.. Lol).
She and LSW would look great together..imo. :)

I’m not really a fan of a medical drama and a sageuk! And with these medical +sageuk + 50plus episodes = horse healer, is defenitely not my genre!

But since Lee Yo Won, Lee Sang Woo and Kim So Eun are in it, I will definitely give it a try!

The cast are all really pretty pretty!!

But nooooo! Lee Sang Woo.. when he will ever get the girl? Aww. My poor boy. I'm so sad for him. :(

I love Kim So Eun in Boys over Flowers! So cute and adorable! Can she and LSW just end up together? :(

And it's true that Lee Yo Won lacks charisma onscreen and her acting is bland but I don't know but I think she's pretty effective. I just love her in 49 days.

I'm not not really a fan of Lee Yo Won, but wait!! Did I just read Lee Sang Woo and Kim So Eun is in this drama?! Are they the second leads? Argghh. I don't know but I'm always into the second leads more than the main actors! :|

Reading the characters description I think its impossible for LSW and KSE to end up together, but errr! Why they can't just end up together!! I can't bear LSW again in just one sided love and brokenhearted again!!

Agree with geenah..Lee Sang Woo robbed the leading lady in Feast of the Gods and took the leading guy place. I watched it..more than once, if he is capable doing it once ,he could do it again..( that depends on the writer if he decides to follow the viewers review) Lee Yo Won is an actress that have very good chemistry with her co-star..She might not be able to win everyone heart but I simply love her..all her dramas is top in my list of must watch..Her character here is between Doekman and Bong Dal hee... love her in this 2 dramas. I am looking forward to watch Jo Seung Woo in action..for the very 1st time...Thanks for the beautiful pictures especially the grandiose Hanbok they put on Kim So Eun..hope this will be her breakthrough...

So now we have Lee Yo-won looking every inch as Jang-geum. It's like "Surgeon Bong Dal-hee" Joseon times.

And coincidentally, 2 years ago when SBDH was broadcasting here in my place, I watched an FMV of SS501's "The Love That can't Be Erased" in YT, and sketched Lee Yo-won's poses there in uinyeo attire. Didn't even think that Lee Yo-won would eventually be an uinyeo as her future role. XD

Well, I can't wait to see this series... As for LYW, she's one of my favorites, maybe because Queen Seon Deok.
I don't think of her as very beautiful but she does have a very serious beauty fit for heroes, I think, princesses and important females.. I see her playing in Dae Jang Geum sequel.
She could play both young and mature characters.. I have not seen her as Joseon queen just yet.. let's see.
