Running Man: Episode 109

If Olympic athletes have trouble with Running Man’s Boot Camp, then what hope is left for us? They’re going to be challenged to the brink with what the staff has in store in these four seasons. And mind you, Mr. PD may be way stricter (and a lot less reasonable) than your world-class Olympic coach.

EPISODE 109. Broadcast on September 2, 2012.

The cast welcomes back Gary, who’s been out on a back injury for the past 2 weeks. Jae-suk mentions that he’s still not 100% but Gary jokingly grabs onto Jong-kook, proclaiming that he’ll win today.

The two carpeted entrances (blue and red) catch their eyes and Kwang-soo points out that they must have a male and a female guest.

First, the blue door. They try to guess the darkened silhouette (Suk-jin: “An Olympic athlete?”) and then the headphones come out. A single person comes to mind: swimmer, Park Tae-hwan.

Wow, Jong-kook really does look tiny compared to Tae-hwan’s broad stature and the boys joke, “You’ll have to work out some more!” Pfft.

Suk-jin noticeably drops banmal and Haha reminds him that their Olympian is higher on the celebrity-o-meter than they are. It doesn’t help that Jae-suk pulls out his celebrity A-list friend card to “Tae-hwan-ee”. As they bicker, Tae-hwan just smiles and nods without uttering a single word. Are we ever gonna get to hear you talk?

Tae-hwan apologizes for not being able to catch up to Running Man (Caption: We 1000% understand) and Haha asks whose name tag he wants to rip off the most. Answer: Haha.

We have another guest waiting behind Door #2. Meet rhythmic gymnast, Son Yeon-jae. As expected, the boys start running and pushing each other to greet her first. When Jae-suk mentions that they should also take care of their other guest, Tae-hwan just coolly waves, “It’s okay! I’ll just say hi and leave.” Hahaha.

Haha cries that he’ll go back to his playboy-esque days one more time (uh-oh) and starts, “My last… my last love… is Byul!” Phew. You might have ended up in the doghouse there.

They take a moment to sincerely congratulate Haha’s engagement to singer Byul. Aww, congrats Haroro!

The boys tell Haha to just to focus on Byul and Gary pipes that he doesn’t have anyone. Haha: “Just start things up again with Ji-hyo!” Gary gets all huffy, “Me? WHY?!” Aw, no ex- Monday Couple moment?

Jae-suk poses the same question (Who do you want to eliminate the most?) and she meekly answers Haha. When they press her why, she explains that she met Haha once when she was younger and he refused her an autograph.

Haha’s jaw drops in response and the boys start kicking him. Yeah, I bet you regret that now.

Today, there are 3 teams of three (Jae-suk: “That means there’s a team of just us.”) Tae-hwan and Yeon-jae get to choose their teammates in a rock-paper-scissors battle. They get flustered and the cast playfully tease a loveline.

Gary and Jong-kook join Tae-hwan to make up the Green Team. Yeon-jae chooses Jae-suk and lowers her voice to whisper something. A minute later, we learn that she wanted to choose Kwang-soo but, “He doesn’t do well…” Oof.

But she picks the Giraffe to form the Red Team (Kwang-soo: “Is this heaven?”) which means Suk-jin, Haha, and Ji-hyo automatically make up the remaining Blue Team.

It cracks me up that Jae-suk quickly wraps up the opening so the cast can exchange pleasantries with the Olympians. You can almost sense Mr. PD actually sweating as he calls out that he has yet to introduce today’s mission and rules.

Today’s race is a Four Seasons Boot Camp and at each “season,” the first place team will determine to change the size of someone’s name tag. Ooh, this ought to be interesting.

First up is Spring at a small amusement park across the street. They’ll have to clear both games to move on. Both the Red and Green Team opt for the trampoline noraebang first while the Blue Team head for the pool.

Jeez – they have to score at least an 80 to succeed and not surprisingly, turns out to be a harder task than it looks. The Red Team fall short but at least we got to see some Yoo Hyuk moves!

The Green Team starts jumping and singing to Jong-kook’s “Lovely” (Gary stands on the sidelines, shouting). And woah – Tae-hwan can jump pretty high; his mouth comes mere inches to the mic.

When the song wraps up, Jae-suk looks directly at the camera addressing Yoon Eun-hye yet again, “Eun-hye, did you enjoy listening to that?” Flying kick from Jong-kook in response.

Even the Nation’s MC can make a fumble. He ushers out the other team who barely make the cut and spills out, “You’re ‘eliminated,’ right?” Tae-hwan whips back, “I’m really sensitive to that word!” Ooh, yeah you would be.

No worries because Jae-suk immediately apologizes and Tae-hwan lets it roll off of his shoulders.

Tae-hwan looks over to the Blue Team and wonders if they’ll get any screentime (since they’re without a guest). Funnily enough, Haha is giving that exact same speech to his teammates.

This mission entails traversing water but that human hamster ball sure makes me nervous. Sure enough, Haha tumbles inside from the get-go like he’s inside a washing machine. The staff play a rehearsal clip to show how easy it is but I’m gonna go with Haha on this one.

Back at the trampoline, Jae-suk complains to the staff that if the Olympic athletes are getting tired then how hard must it be for the staff? Tae-hwan answers, “Tell me to do the 1500m instead!”

After the Red Team dance to the Number Song, Kwang-soo has a grave expression, “Hyung, I already saw the score…” And poor Yeon-jae can’t hide her disappointment at the sad 32.

The Red Team awards the Green Team 3 points for their dance to DJ DOC’s “Run to You” but that’s just enough for them to hit 80. Thankfully they get to move on too.

If you ever wondered what it would be like to see an Olympic gold medalist tackle a water ball, today’s your chance. I love how the staff sets up this epic marine boy vs. water ball battle… and then Tae-hwan flails, rolling around in the ball, barely making any progress.

Exhausted, he jokes when he hears that it’s only the beginning, “Yeah I’m a bit weak at the start!” Aww.

Surprisingly, the Blue Team pass the noraebang in two tries (with an impressive 95) and clear the Spring portion of the mission. They can either decide to enlarge one team’s name tag size or reduce their own.

In the car, Jae-suk scolds Kwang-soo for trying to act as if he’s friendly with Yeon-jae. They talk about her Olympic performance and she informs them that her hands get sweaty so sometimes the ball slips out of her hands.

Jae-suk: “So what do you do?” Yeon-jae: “You have to go after it…” They chat more about her coach who’s the quiet but scary type.

Poor Tae-hwan is stuck with a larger name tag (we flashback to confirm that the Blue Team chose him) and humbly accepts Jong-kook’s compliment. Jong-kook presses him that he must know how good he is and Tae-hwan admits, “[I say that] to myself…”

They ask the burning question of what song he listens to before his meets and Tae-hwan answers that it’s always an energetic ones. At that, Gary resolves that Leessang should start making some happier songs. HA – so that Tae-hwan will listen to them?

When they hear that Tae-hwan only drank alcohol once while he was training this past year, Jong-kook claims that he did too. Gary cuts in, “You drank so much that you couldn’t remember!”

Tae-hwan shows off his large name tag at their second (Summer) mission. Here they’ll have to earn the ingredients for their boodaejjigae by playing 알까기 (ahlkkagi, a finger shooting game to knock off your opponent’s pieces off the board).

Kwang-soo and Tae-hwan are up first and it’s hilarious how Coach Kookie makes another fantastic appearance. He and Gary shout out strategies simultaneously to the point where Tae-hwan exclaims, “One at a time!”

Kwang-soo’s pieces ends up in a precarious situation which force him to stand behind Tae-hwan to get a good angle. Tae-hwan teases, “Don’t… blow air into my ear.” Omo!

They get down to one piece each and then Tae-hwan wins it for his team.

Next up is Haha who starts off strong by knocking out a couple of Tae-hwan’s pieces but he soon catches up. They’re down to 1:1 again and then… Haha misses, giving the victory to the Green Team yet again.

This time, Jae-suk steps up to the plate and even before his first shot, all I can hear is Coach Kookie and Coach Gary muttering in the background. (“He’s going, he’s going!” “It’s gonna fly!”)

Coaches Kookie and Gary relentlessly keep up the “Hey batter, batter, batter…” tactic but Jae-suk eventually sends two of Tae-hwan’s pieces flying off the table. In the end, Tae-hwan snatches a third win.

The Green Team pretty much earn all of the available ingredients and all the other teams can do is look on with envy.

Tae-hwan gets back a well-earned mini name tag this time and in the car, they chat about his disqualification at the 400m freestyle heats in London. He was on pins and needles waiting for the decision to be overturned. All he could do was reassure himself in the hope that it would be.

He admits that he lost some motivation before the finals but Gary could tell that Tae-hwan’s expression read how determined he was anyway. Then to buoy the gravity of the conversation, Gary confesses, “I drank so much afterward that I missed the finals!”

They move onto the Winter portion of the training camp at an ice rink. Aww, how cute are the kids cheering for their favorite Running Man members! It’s Human Curling where the team who stops closest to the finish line wins.

The Red Team set themselves up to go first. Yeon-jae panics but she stops riiiiggght at the finish line. Ji-hyo stops further away from the line and Jae-suk is launched to push her out of the way.

It’s that Ji-hyo grabs hold of him and she ends up just a tad further than Yeon-jae. Definitely the Ace. And then Suk-jin manages to push Yeon-jae out of the way.

Aww Yeon-jae is so cute. She and her teammates have a bit of fun sliding on the ice with their knees and she stops in front of Im PD who blushes. LOL.

Onto the Human Curling finals between the Green and Blue Teams. HA – looks like Spartakooks‘ weakness is ice as he slips and falls for the second time. Tae-hwan gives some coaching advice to Gary (are all of them Coaches? keh) but Ji-hyo’s up next and Gary tells him that his weakness is Ji-hyo.

And we get our ex-Monday Couple moment after all because Gary grabs onto Ji-hyo’s hand, turning her around. They both end up past the finish line and Gary defends, “I wanted her by my side!”

Now I’m convinced that all the Olympic athletes are made for variety. The other teams gripe at the Green Team’s strategy powwow as if they’re at the actual Olympics and Tae-hwan finally bursts, “I have a huge grudge against [the Olympics]!” HAHAHA.

The crowd must be full of Jong-kook fans because Spartakooks ends up right on top of the finish line. When the others complain against it, they scrreeeam in his defense.

All Suk-jin needs to do is push Jong-kook out of the way. He starts off promising but then Jong-kook grabs him and they both end up tumbling out of their trash cans. The PDs declare them both disqualified and Ji-hyo is declared the winner. Blue Team wins it again.

Immediately they call for Jong-kook’s name tag to be supersized.

At the final mission, Autumn and now we’re getting to some name tag ripping. Plus, there are potions hidden in the grounds that could be advantageous. Wait, is this Secret Garden all over again?

How sweet – Yeon-jae hopes that Kwang-soo isn’t tagged out too quickly but then she nearly cries when Kwang-soo playfully starts ripping off her name tag.

Haha hands over a box a little too willingly to Kwang-soo, calling themselves “Shin-ja” (for “baeshinja” or traitor). It’s a dud of course.

<

Haha and Jae-suk stumble upon Witch Maknae FD’s humble abode but turns out that’s not where the potions are hiding. In fact, Kwang-soo finds one and makes no secret of his discovery.

They bring it back for Witch FD to work his magic. The result of Kwang-soo’s hard labor? A giant name tag. Hahaha – man cannot catch a break.

Jong-kook confesses to his teammates that the supersized name tag makes him super nervous and jumpy. Gary reminds him, “A tiger without teeth is still a tiger.”

Tae-hwan locks on his target, Kwang-soo, and then gives chase. Damn this boy is fast on water and on land and catches him in no time. He isn’t even out of breath!

Kwang-soo and Jae-suk plead for another chance but Tae-hwan is well aware that Kwang-soo always uses his second chance to betray his captors. He decides to let the Giraffe and Grasshopper off the hook anyway.

This time, Haha finds a red potion bottle and runs to Witch FD. Haha is allowed to call out one person and if they’ll be eliminated if they rip off Haha’s name tag. He whispers, “Park Tae-hwan.”

But that’s a no can do… because someone else has already picked him. So his second choice is Jae-suk, who is also listening right outside the door. Oho…

Haha stares at the camera and leaves a message for Jae-suk that he’ll be mighty angry next week. How about he’s angry now?

What?! We have to wait a week to find out how this all ends?! *stompity stomp*

personally, i consider eps. 109/110 as two of my favorite RM episodes (Top 5). why? let me count the ways:

1. son yeon jae = cutest. female. RM guest. ever. her childlike (not childish) reactions are so endearingly funny and cute, it just makes you want to hug her.

if i were a doll manufacturer, i'd be selling SYJ huggable dolls by now LOL. i can't help noticing that even while she was falling on the trampoline, she kept her toes straight and pointed (now, there's a rhythmic gymnast for you).

2.park tae wan -- i like the fact that his natural competitive drive just oozes out of him naturally; even his playfully temperamental outbursts didn't seem out of place. it even made him more likable.

3. interplay between the RM cast -- sometimes these guys are at their funniest when they make those absurd ad-libs.

4. various scenes like KJK slipping on ice (it was so unexpected & ludicrous i roared out in laughter when i saw it); kwang-soo's expression when he was given that humongous name tag (and not the reward he was clearly expecting); the cast's over-the-top reaction to the buzzing bee that dared to approach son yeon jae; park tae wan's spontaneous dance when he won the board game (KJK and gary did a great job of distracting his adversaries with their non-stop prattle LOL)

there's more but space is limited, so i'll just end right here...

p.s. more athletes, or at least athletic celebrities, as guests please!

I wanna see Hak Seon Yang on a variety show! And KIM Soo Myun as well, he was so cute when the announcer made a big pause to make sure he says the right country lol.For Hak Seon Yang I cheered even if he took gold in a competition that someone from my own country was in. Son Yeon Jae was such a sweetie in the competition, all the spectators became her fans lol, even the BBC reporters on scene saw it and emphasised it during the broadcast. Park Tae Hwan was so funny in this episode! All in all, I do hope the media gives a bit more credit to other athletes as well, it's good to emphasise the variety of sports there are around, so that people involve more and stay healthy :)

I just loved that episode!

Park Tae Hwan cracked me up :D He is made for variety!

And Son Yeon Jae...She is sooo adorable :) (I saw her for the first time during this year's olympics and I was a fan like from the first second^^ She seems just so cheery while competing which is kind of refreshing in rhythmic gymnastics!) And the Haroro story jis just too damn funny^^

Can't wait to see what happens next but I guess Haroro will be in BIG trouble :D

How come nobody, as in guests, ever pick Ji-hyo in their team? It just surprises me. She's like, one of the best member in RM! I would actually pick her first. It's kinda sad how she always end up in the RM-only team...

Yonghwa chose her for the Hong Kong Special Episode. That is the only one that comes to my mind, I'm also surprised she doesn't get chosen considering how good she is on the show.

Sometimes I think it's scripted - female guests either by choice or PD-instruction 99% of the time choose Jaesuk (and if they're bad/new at variety, this is a great bet because he'll draw you out of your shell and all). Then I'm assuming the PDs don't think it looks good to stack all the females in one team (not that it's a bad idea, since Jihyo is so ace.)

Therefore male guests are more likely to choose Jihyo. But then, we don't have very many episodes (that come to mind) where there were more than 1 guest (at this point I auto-assume guest + Jaesuk), AND the male guest got to choose his team. Of that small subset, that male guest must also either watch RM a lot and know that Jihyo is an ace, or the guest must know Jihyo personally. This doesn't happen a lot (e.g. Jaehyung).

They did stick all the females on one team and it was the shortest hide and seek *ever* I don't think a short hide and seek like that has happened since. lol. I think the PDs are afraid of that happening again.

You know why? Because females rock, especially ajumma.

I think it's because she's a girl and naturally weaker in physical games. So if the guests want to win, they'd naturally go for KJK kinda guy.

Oh, I think I remember one, a long time ago, Cha Tae Hyun immediately pick Jihyo and Joongkook as his teammate, Ace and Spartakook in one team. But maybe, they need to put the Ace in the other team to distribute the ability of each team.

I think people try to make sure there is only one girl per team. I also think that a lot of it has to do with scandals. The guys make it clear that they pick girls they like the best so if a male comes on and picks her right away then they might be afraid
of making a scandal.  Idols are hard because of their fanclubs...notice how different the RM guys were when Lizzy was on?

Jihyo is rather weak in actually catching people (guys) & tearing nametags, though. At least that's what I noticed from recent eps. Might be she doesn't want to brawl with unfamiliar male guests. Secondly, in a straight chase, it's hard for her to grab much less tear someone (recent Olympics hide-n-seek).

But she's excellent at everything else like finding stuff, being sneaky, being smart, and generally kickass. (And she survives nametag tearing a lot better than KJK (my bias) for various reasons, lol)

I guess I'm just saying depending what the guest is expecting/looking for, Jihyo may not be the best choice and I'm not that surprised she doesn't get picked more often.

Ji hyo is certainly one of the best players among the RM members but not the best, she's good at solving puzzles and stuff and hiding or making alliance in the name tag ripping games, so far from what i've seen the only reason ji hyo survives until late in the name tag ripping game is because the guys treat her as a woman, they are always soft on her in the beginning, jae suk and jong kook always help her or work together whenever they see her, gary is weak towards her, kwang soo doesn't dare to rip her tag even if he can, the guys always let her hang around and fight amongst each other which is why she always remains until late in those games, if somebody rips her tag early she gets so pissed off that guys look like they don't want to make her angry, she has quick thinking ability but nothing more than that whereas KJK on the other hand has brains as well as brawns, he's the perfect candidate for the guests to choose if they think they might not succeed, even jae suk and haha are very smart when it comes to thinking, they can talk their way out of dangerous situations...

I absolutely love this episode. The two guests were so cute and awesome.

1) I like it when Yoo Jae Suk mentioned about Eun Hye and Jong Kook gave a flying kick in response. The first game was so hilarious, the way they dance, jump and sing.. wow! definately difficult. The waterball game was very difficult too.

2)I am so glad that gary is back to RM. I like it when he and KJK became coaches to park tae wan. All the distracting methods.. KJK and Park Tae Wan were so similar in terms of competitiveness. It is the first time, a guest is physically 'bigger' than KJK.

3) At the Ice ring, Spartakook fall down twice and ex-monday couple moment and KJK grabbing Suk Jin legs..

4) At the third game, Kwang Soo expression is so funny when he found the bottle and ended up with a big nametag.

5) Park Tae Wan ran after Kwang soo, and Yoo Jae Suk had to save him.

6) Gray had to reassure Jong Kook, " a tiger without teeths is still a tiger!" haha... Jong Kook actually felt threaten with the super big name tag..

7) Son Yeon Jae reaction when Kwang Soo pretend to tear her name tag

8) Haha wet armpit.. (embarassing) and the mention of the autograph

Last but not least, the part about Ji Hyo not being selected by guests were reasonable.
Son Yeon Jae will automatically join Jae Suk team because she is new and she is the centre of focus being the only female guest. Kwang Soo was chosen instead of Haha because of the autograph incident and his armpit. I think because he is getting married soon so it was pretty sensitive to pair with her.

Park Tae wan is competitive and of course he chose KJK, and in order to balance up the power he chose Gary who just recover from injuries.

Ji Hyo is also the leader of another team because she is the ace and she knows the games well, so she is independent to stand on her feet.

Thank you for the review.

Thank you for the review. :)

Is everyone ignoring Park's own reasons for choice? I know some people think teams are chosen by PDs beforehand, (making the 'guest's choice' a lie ._.), but personally I think guests are (usually) just given 'guidelines' like "don't have all the girls in one team" or "don't pick both YJS and KJK" (only rarely not enforced).

"Park Tae wan is competitive and of course he chose KJK"
The whole point you forgot was, he skipped KJK and went for Gary (knowing that Son could've gone next and chosen KJK). It made sense. Physically at least, Gary is a very reliable (minus when Jihyo's involved, LOL) support/dark horse to a strong player like Park without being overkill like having the Commander. Maybe he even felt confident enough with his ideal team (Park+Gary+?)and wanted to face off Commander's team (likely KJK+a girl+a guy equal/weaker than Gary) to spice up the show/competition. I know I would've liked to watch that.

Only, this was all assuming Gary was his usual self. Park didn't have time to watch RM (he said it at his intro before all this) and only then realized Gary was injured. Now his team suddenly becomes weaker than he imagined (it's like suddenly getting 2nd worst instead of 2nd best), so he'd want to have KJK on his side.

Sorry for the long post :p But it was a detail I really liked about Park. That he was competitive in the right spirit, and not the kind of "I want all the best members on my team" competitive. It's the weaker guests that go for KJK without a thought (with good reason).

I loved this episode! I actually watched it before the recap came out, but I found myself laughing all over again while reading this- thanks for the great recap, gummimochi.

I can understand why Ji Hyo doesn't picked more often, although I found myself really wishing that Tae Hwan had picked her and Jong Kook- that would have been a seriously ace team.

I was actually surprised by how likeable and into the activities Park Tae Hwan was. When I found out that he'd be guest-starring in this episode and the next, I was pretty excited, but seeing him on TV during the Olympics, he didn't seem like he'd be good at variety, but he totally is. And holy cow, the boy moves fast, even on land. 0_0

Whoaa!! I like that substitute life idea at the end of episode. I wonder how Jaesuk and Haha will play it!
And who is the person who chose Park Taehwan??

And I like how Park Taehwan treats Yonjae like a sweet oppa although they are in different team. If only Yeonjae is not underage, I will ship them already.

Anyone notices that recently RM members always urge Jihyo and Gary to go back being couple? At first when Jihyo's dating was announced, they always told Gary to forget about Jihyo. But what happen now? Jihyo is still dating, right?

Just 'story progression'. They're interacting, so they tease. Or would you want to watch more "tell Gary to forget" for the next 50 episodes? These hosts know how to be funny & what audience wants to see/hear.

(Not to mention I don't recall "they always told Gary to forget Jihyo". They only quietly acknowledged the MC broke up, and Gary played with "it's not over yet!!! DX", and the rest just seldom comment on it except for moments when it's funny to go "it's OVER!!! 8D" to Gary)

This was a good, but not great ep - like the one w/ Gong Hyo-jin and the 1st one w/ Han Ji-min.

The games weren't as interesting/fun and as conducive towards cast tomfoolery w/ each other.

Tae-hwan and Yeon-jae are pretty good guests tho.

Despite the jokes about it, Tae-hwan's shoulders aren't anything like Spartakook's.

Kookie just has more mass and bulk to his shoulders than TH.

Kookie is listed at 5'10" (so probably more like 5'9") w/ his listed weight ranging from around 160 to 167 lbs.

There is no way the tiger weighs that little w/ his bulk; I have a few inches on KJK and I weigh btwn 180-185 lbs and I don't have as thick of a frame.

KJK has to be a good 15-20 lbs more than listed weight.

Maybe you just have heavier bones.

He looks pretty slim if you see him in suits.

Anyway if you are that obsessed with his 'true weight' (half your comment was on it and not the ep...), there were many weight missions in previous eps & at least one had to have his weight revealed (directly or indirectly via deductions/simple math. Even Jihyo couldn't escape it entirely)... if you trust the scales.

I don't remember offhand because his weight doesn't really concern me, but it was in the range of 70+kg.

Tae-hwan shoulders are much morr broader than Jong-kook. Kid looks like a football player. When people talk about shoulders, they're talking about how wide it is, not how thick the arms are.

Tae-hwan's shoulders really aren't that broad; KJK shoulder "pop out" b/c of all that muscle.

Put the same sized shirt on Tae-hwan and KJK and KJK would fill out the shoulder area more.

i don't know what you're trying to prove here, anybody can clearly see tae hwan's shoulder are broader and bigger than KJK, he has big bones and as a swimmer his shoulders became broader like every other swimmer out there, no matter which shirt you put on both of them KJK still will look small in terms of shoulder length, even if KJK lose all his muscles his shoulder won't look bigger than tae hwan's because KJK's shoulder's bones are clearly smaller than tae hwan's.
