Su Ae and Kwon Sang-woo’s Yawang secures time slot

It’s full steam ahead for Yawang, or Queen of Ambition, the latest drama adaptation of hit manhwa writer Park In-kwon’s work (Dameul, War of Money). Su Ae and Kwon Sang-woo have signed contracts to star, and the show has now secured a Monday-Tuesday slot on SBS’s January broadcast schedule. The 24-episode series will focus on the story of a fiercely ambitious woman who is dead set on becoming the First Lady and fights tooth and nail to get there.

The production has undergone a writer change, and now the adaptation will be scripted by writer Lee Hee-myung, of Rooftop Prince and Bad Family. Hm, that’s a mixed bag. I loved Bad Family, but the writing was a big weakness in Rooftop. I recognize his older ’90s dramas like Tomato and Mister Q, but my memory’s pretty fuzzy on what happened in those stories. Directing are PDs Jo Nam-gook of The Chaser and Jo Young-kwang of 49 Days. Again, mixed bag since the directing in 49 Days wasn’t anything to write home about, but The Chaser‘s director seems a perfect fit for taut suspense and political intrigue.

Su Ae stars as the ambitious heroine who overcomes severe poverty and dreams of becoming the president’s wife. Kwong Sang-woo is the sweet and innocent guy who sacrifices everything for her. The drama deals with fatal loves, betrayal, conspiracies, unstoppable ambition, and the downfall of humanity. So… light and fluffy, are we?

The heroine is described as “falling into the swamp of ambition,” like it’s an addiction she can’t shake, and it sounds like Kwon Sang-woo’s character doesn’t stay the sweet sacrificial patsy for long, because it’s the story of his revenge, as he seeks to punish the woman whom he once loved like life itself. Sounds like Nice Guy meets The Chaser.

The production plans to finish casting and start shooting by November, and airs in January on SBS.

I'm not sure I'll be ready for another "guy takes revenge on his ex-love" story so soon after Nice Guy. But I do like both of the actors, so I'll probably check it out.

I agree the premise sounds interesting though very similar to Nice Guy, but somehow I like the idea of watching a woman driven by ambition because it could be fun to watch a drama where both leads toe the line between likability, but I'm still not sure whether to try Nice Guy or this one first...I'll probably just try both to see.

Cont. And wanted to watch Rom- Com with him only to realize most if not all his drama are sad ones. I can't handle Kwon Sang-woo tears so i will also enjoy his picture, although i do want to watch his movie "Pained" -_-

Pain was actually pretty good, though. Not AS tear-jerky as it could have been given the title...but...still tear-jerky.

I vividly remember Sang-Woo and think he's great. But a part of me wishes this role was at least offered to Park Ki-Woong. Seems right up his alley and he hasn't done a legit lead drama role yet (movie no county and I loved Tutor Friend 2)

Kwon Sang Woo!

I did a mini retro marathon months back watching Winter Sonata and Stairway to Heaven back to back and I think my tear ducts haven't recovered yet :)

I once looked up his filmography and cracked up at the hilariously tearjerky titles. To wit:

Bad Love (KBS2, 2007)
Sad Love Song (MBC, 2005)
A Story Sadder than Sadness (2009)
Shadows of Love (2012)
Pain (2011)
Fate (2007)
Almost Love (2006)

Between him and Su Ae I'm hoping for a lot of very pained, angry, I-am-trying-to-hold-it-in-but-the-tears- just-fall-out-oh-so-beautifully-MTV-style moments ... he's really at his best steering clear of comedic roles and Su Ae is just an emotional powerhouse all on her own.

Hyuk hyuk.

And then there's the laundry list of physical impairments and illnesses his screenwriters trot out (carefully selected so that the faces stay pretty, of course): TWO blind girls, one girl who feels too much pain, he can't feel any pain, he gets cancer, and I think there's even one ending in which he loses his foot as some kind of poetic justice trade-off...

His management company needs to find a plot where he can weep while showing off those choco abs, asap. Heartrending underdog bodybuilder sports drama meets revenge tragedy, mayhaps?

Back in 2002 he was in We Are Dating Now with Chae-Rim. He played a player, he was pretty funny and not bad at all...

Didn't see Daemul. But I'd watch anything with Su-ae in it.

It's a rather bizarre ambition to have. Why not shoot for actually being the president instead? At least there's more control over that since you'd only have to deal with your own capabilities...

To aim to be the first lady you have to either make your husband the president or hope that an unmarried man becomes president then falls in love with you through all the bodyguards and other jostling singles.

I KNOW, right? Kind of an empty ambition. If we can't even fully get behind or understand the reasons why she strives for that (as opposed to, say, president) it's going to be very hard to buy all the angst that's sure to follow in her quest for her "dream."

Sounds like "Love and Ambition" (sarang-gwa yamang) sauteed in the "Flames of Ambition/Desire" (yokmang-ui bulkkot) becomes the "Daemul".

No, seriously. It's like the darker version of "Daemul" without the intensity of "There's No Such Thing as a Good Guy in this World".
