Arang and the Magistrate: Episode 18

So much good stuff today, packed with development and intensity. A few ends get tied up so we can turn our attention to the big ramp-up to next week’s finale, and I’m glad of it: We could use the time to confront the Big Bad and address the numerous mythological mysteries still to resolve, of which this drama has plenty. The mythology is also this show’s forte creatively, so I’m happy to direct my attention to that. And the romance, of course, which is inextricably linked to that mythology. ‘Cause I’m still dying to know how this universe and all its rules are going to allow our couple their happily ever after. Because they’re getting a happily ever after, right? I’m sure of it. Don’t contradict me.

EPISODE 18 RECAP

Eun-oh is called a criminal and arrested by the newcomer and his armed guards: Governor Park accuses him of misusing his power to plot a rebellion. Which makes him a traitor.

It’s obvious this is Lord Choi’s doing, and we saw him previously sending word to the governor. He can’t best the magistrate of his town, so he has gone over Eun-oh’s head to upper management, so to speak.

Lord Choi assures the governor that all his accusations are founded. The governor believes he’s locking up a true insurgent, but worries about Eun-oh’s powerful father causing problems for them. Lord Choi just chuckles, saying that they can use this opportunity to rid both father and son.

Arang makes her way inside the cave to face Mu-yeon, and gets to the point: What did Eun-oh’s mother want from her? Mu-yeon asks why, and for a moment I’m afraid Arang is going to tip her hand, but thankfully she just supposes that Arang wants to know what could be powerful enough motivation to give up her body. She answers that Mom wanted revenge against Lord Choi—but not to kill him. She wanted for him to spend his entire life groveling and submissive at her feet.

Ah, it’s a clever revenge, and exactly up Mu-yeon’s alley. She didn’t even have to do anything differently since that was how he spent his days anyway, so she could enter Mom’s body readily. Arang shakes her head in disbelief: “She wouldn’t have given up her body for that reason.”

Joo-wal paces outside the cave anxiously, and decides to barge in. He stops at the entrance just as Mu-yeon asks what Arang would want enough to exchange her body for it. Revenge on her killer? Protection for a loved one?

Arang stammers, “I… I…” No! Don’t say a word! Then she hurriedly gets up and runs outside. Phew.

Joo-wal stops her outside and entreats her not to forget what he’d told her—about never giving herself up.

Arang asks why the heck Joo-wal is with that woman in the first place, and he can’t answer. He enters the cave and finds Mu-yeon put out by Arang’s resistance, saying that she won’t be easy. Well, thank goodness for that.

She wants the magistrate out of the picture and he agrees to it, but she contradicts him: Leave him alone for now. He’s surprised, but she says that she changed her mind after meeting Arang, and with a sneer says she understands now why Joo-wal was so slow in finding out her heart’s desire.

Lord Choi drops by the prison to chuckle over Eun-oh’s predicament, saying that he could arrange for someone to bring him food if he likes. “Ah, she could do it—that woman ghost.”

Eun-oh’s eyes narrow. Lord Choi continues, smirking that even if Eun-oh were to die right now, the unkillable ghost-woman wouldn’t be able to die to meet him on the other side. Hm, he must really think he’s got Eun-oh good to reveal his hand like this. Don’t you know you do the Scooby Doo monologue after the fall guy’s dead? Or better yet, not at all? Some secrets you should just take with you to the grave. I’m no evil genius (or am I?) but that just seems like standard evil operating procedure to me.

Lord Choi adds the taunt that he could go to Eun-oh’s mother and describe in grotesque detail the way her father died. Sick bastard.

Eun-oh fumes, angry tears filling his eyes as Lord Choi tells him, “You can’t do a single thing, just like your foolish mother couldn’t.” He laughs, and Eun-oh launches himself at his bars, yelling into his face.

Arang returns home to the strange scene and wonders what happened. The Bangs fill her in and she beelines for the prison. Bang-wool arrives moments later, having heard the same news. Aw, that’s so sweet that both men at least have sweethearts to lament their downfalls.

The men urge the women to leave quickly before Lord Choi causes trouble for them too.

A notice is posted in the village of the magistrate’s supposed crime. The townspeople are convinced it’s slanderous, which warms my heart, and even propose taking a stand on his behalf. But thankfully these men have wits to match their hearts because they see that fighting in the name of the magistrate actually makes true the charge against him, which is that he was inciting rebellion. Still, brownie points for the thought! They decide to keep quiet and sniff around for the truth behind the matter.

Joo-wal is stunned to hear of Eun-oh’s capture, and his faithful servant informs him that it was Lord Choi’s doing. Joo-wal tears out immediately.

At the magistrate’s office, a crowd has gathered for Eun-oh’s punishment, while the governor presides with Lord Choi at his side. Along with Dol-swe, Eun-oh is dragged out and charged with his crimes; he is to be stripped of office and investigated. Eun-oh spits out that they’re trumping up false charges with no evidence.

The governor lays out his offenses, which Eun-oh forcefully refutes, like that he misspent earmarked funds for his patrols or offered jobs to the low-born with the intent of undermining national law. But when leveled with the accusation that elevated his slave to government office, which is also against the law, he can’t protest because that’s exactly what he did.

He tells Eun-oh to acknowledge his crimes, which will save at least his life. Furious, Arang starts to step in (“Oy, old man!” she barks) but she’s held back and cautioned to be quiet for Eun-oh’s sake.

Eun-oh insists, “I won’t confess to a crime I didn’t commit, not even if I die!” He glares and challenges them to lock him up or cut off his head if they like: “If I am guilty of a true crime, I won’t run away—I’ll accept my punishment!”

Lord Choi is determined to make an example of him, and tells the people to watch and see what happens to lawbreakers. He yanks Arang along, accusing the people of being too stupid to see that their magistrate has been bewitched by a ghost. He points a finger at her: “This woman is not a person!”

Arang tries to protest, but Lord Choi draws a sword and announces that the woman won’t die, no matter how many times you kill her. Uh… are you just going to stand there and let him kill a body without reason, on the off-chance that his whackadoo theory is true? (I mean, yes in this case it does happen to be true, but still! In normal people situations, this is not acceptable logic!)

Eun-oh fights his bonds and screams, “Don’t you dare touch her!” Even Joo-wal darts forward to intervene, but is blocked by the governor’s officers. Lord Choi swings his sword upward… and Eun-oh shouts, “Stop! I acknowledge all my crimes.”

Nooooooo! But even though his ploy has succeeded, Lord Choi is so worked up that he declares that he must see this through anyway, wanting to kill Arang to get the proof out in the open. But the governor orders him that it’s enough, and he lowers the sword.

The Bangs lament this unfortunate turn of events, and just when they hopped on the Eun-oh train! Weak-hearted Lee-bang trembles that he hopes Lord Choi will take him back, but Hyung-bang argues a different way: Let’s rescue the magistrate. I like him.

But a masked breakout seems above their heads, so they keep brainstorming. What if they take this to Eun-oh’s father? They draft a letter and send a messenger straightaway.

That night, Bang-wool and Arang sit on her front stoop, feeling gloomy. Bang-wool asks why it’s such a bad thing for Dol-swe to wear an official uniform, and why there are such strict differences between people when you’re all looking up at the same moonlight.

Arang says, “I don’t know either. People who should live become wandering ghosts, while Lord Choi should have already died and become a demon but runs amok. I suppose there’s a reason for everything. Maybe they’re throwing a mistake-ridden world at us, telling humans and ghosts to do what they can to change it.”

Eun-oh and Dol-swe are dragged out to the courtyard again the next day, to kneel before a smug Lord Choi, who says that maybe now that the rabble-rousing magistrate has been subdued he’ll be able to get some reading done. Eun-oh spits back at him that he’s the one killing men to silence them and filling his stores in corrupt ways: “But heaven doesn’t exist just to look nice—you’d better prepare yourself to receive your thousand punishments!”

Lord Choi kicks him and growls, “I am heaven, and I am the law. You receive those thousand punishments—I’ll give them to you!” He starts stomping on Eun-oh in his rage.

A cry sounds, “Stop!”

Lord Kim has arrived. Aww, yeah. I’m itching for a smackdown.

Lord Choi accuses him of interfering in due process—how can he harbor a traitor, no matter if he’s his son? Then he advises the governor that Lord Kim should also be considered under suspicion.

To which Lord Kim declares, “Governor, receive the king’s command!” Everyone reels in shock. Booyah! Daddy came prepared.

Immediately everyone gets down on their knees, including Lord Choi. Lord Kim reads the royal decree: Pardon the magistrate, Kim Eun-oh. His disregard of social status in his administration within his purview and not a crime. Furthermore, the magistrate has improved the lives of his citizens, which is to be commended.

The reactions of everybody are moved and relieved (except for the Old Evil One, but he doesn’t count), but the scene is worth noting just for Eun-oh’s alone. There’s such an intense mix of emotion in his silent reaction that you can’t help crying along with his tears of shock, relief, and gratitude. Or at least, I can’t. Blubbering mess here. Give me a sec to recover.

As they leave the premises, the men are greeted by their sweethearts: Bang-wool races into Dol-swe’s arms in a loud outburst of emotion, while Eun-oh and Arang have a quieter, but no less intense, reunion.

Eun-oh’s father explains that he got additional support from ministers who’d failed to step in when Eun-oh’s grandfather was unjustly accused. Eun-oh has taken on a key role in ferreting out Lord Choi’s evils, and he vows not to stop until the job has been completed.

Dad says that the people’s spirit is something that, like water, flows on its own once it starts to trickle. Eun-oh has tapped that public sentiment, and should stick around to see where its path leads. Eun-oh replies that he can’t presume to know what that public sentiment is, but he will make sure no more lives are taken.

Arang thinks to herself of all the things Eun-oh has, as though just now remembering—he has a father, and a mother, Dol-swe, this job, this home. “That’s right, he had his own life,” she notes sadly, as though she’s not a part of it. She thinks of Mu-yeon’s offer/question of what would entice her to give herself up.

In her cave, Mu-yeon is seized with a gripping pain as she becomes weaker still. “Mu-young…” she gasps.

She must be sensing his presence, just outside the cave. He enters, and she entreats, “Please help me.” He clenches fist and turns, leaving her pouting after him.

Eun-oh and Dol-swe set out to “finish the job.” With their patrolmen in tow, they storm Lord Choi’s household, a full-on battle waging in the front yard. Lord Choi is outraged, but refuses to heed his servant’s warning to flee. Instead, he begins emptying his drawers of valuables to take with him. Yes, so at least your road to hell will be paved with gold.

Predictably, he isn’t fast enough to both line his pockets and escape. Eun-oh strolls in as he’s packing up his chest and says he’s here to say: “After experiencing it firsthand, prison life is quite endurable.” He’ll escort him forthwith, so he can see for himself.

He arrests Lord Choi for murdering Seo-rim’s maid and illegally organizing a private army, among many other crimes. He’s dragged off literally screaming and casting one last longing glance at his gold, heh. Eun-oh sends him off tut-tutting. It’s pretty satisfying.

The officers clear out Lord Choi’s ill-gotten stores and dispense rice to the people.

Up in heaven, the gods watch the fall of one more of Mu-yeon’s minions, prey to his own desires. Always one to play devil’s advocate, Jade Emperor says that desire isn’t always a bad thing—it’s just that it can twist you up when you use it wrongly. However, “there are times when desires have the power to move the world. If all humans had powers of discernment, gods like us would not be so beset with such headaches, would we?”

Joo-wal comes out of the chaos unscathed, perhaps because heeded his servant’s cautions and left. He’s surveying Lord Choi empty room when Eun-oh returns and announces, “Now we meet again.”

Eun-oh knows Joo-wal secretly moved Mu-yeon and demands to know what their relationship is. Joo-wal replies, “Arang met her.” He warns that Mu-yeon never lets go of something she wants: “I don’t know what Arang is thinking, but at the very least you had better make sure she doesn’t give herself up for your sake.”

First thing back at home, Eun-oh asks Arang about the meeting: “You can’t possibly believe what she says?”

Arang explains the whole we’ll-forget-each-other quandary, “At least this way, we’d stay in each other’s memories.” Aww. So it’s not noble sacrifice driving her, but a last-ditch attempt to hold on to her love. Which, while also frustrating, is something I can’t take issue with.

He scoffs at the reasoning, telling her, “If it’s because of my mother, stop it. No—whatever it’s because of, stop it.”

Arang replies that the moment she found out that his mother had killed her, she realized that the truth bell was meaningless. “So, it made me think that my truth isn’t about killing your mother, but saving her and saving you. Let me do one real thing for you.”

He fires back, “Do you know how much of a coward you’re making out to be? Did you think that that’s what I’d want you to do?!” He glares at her with hurt eyes and storms out.

Eun-oh drowns his sorrows, while Arang writes a letter. Please tell me it’s not a Dear John. Don’t do it!

Joo-wal receives a different letter—one whose contents put him into a panic.

Later that night, Arang brings a tray of food to Eun-oh’s room, which she prepared herself. There’s not much time left till the full moon, she reminds him, and she wanted to cook for him at least this once.

He’s not feeling very enthusiastic about dinner, but she concedes that he was right about her misguided thoughts, and she’ll do as he wishes. You’re not lying, right? To lull us into a false sense of security or whatnot? At least her words get him to relax a bit and he eats, telling her the food is tasty. And still, I am not reassure at the way her smile drops when he’s not looking…

Neither am I getting good vibes at the way Arang strolls around the yard in the early morning, giving everything one last, wistful look. Oh, this is so sad. It’s the little wifely gestures that get to me, like the cooking of dinner and the way she turns around his shoes on the stoop. She grows teary-eyed as she walks away, and starts crying in earnest as she walks through the village.

She arrives at the shaman’s house just as Bang-wool is primping in the mirror, and the timing has Bang-wool grumping—because all the fussing in the world can’t compete with Arang’s beauty. Aw, but one solid bit of flattery is enough to revive her spirits.

Arang hands her a letter, asking her to convey it to Eun-oh. Ack! I knew it. Arang says she was a big bother to Bang-wool and tells her to be well. There’s no hiding the goodbye intentions, and Bang-wool hurries to Eun-oh right away, handing him the letter.

Eun-oh reads, understanding what she’s gone off to do. As he races out of the yard, Arang narrates her letter:

Arang: “Someone once said, I dreamt of a butterfly one afternoon and when I awoke, I did not know whether I was the butterfly or the butterfly was me. While I’ve known you, I felt that. Was I a ghost who’d become a human for a brief moment? Or a human turned ghost? It was enough to make me forget, and time flowed by like a dream. I felt happy spirits happily, and sad spirits sadly—living as a human was quite moving. Thank you for holding me dear. Thank you for allowing me to live with that dear heart. Just as the cold wind wipes away the spot where the moon grows dark, the place where I was will also disappear. But I won’t ask you to forget me. Please remember the name Arang. Magistrate, I love you.”

I love the shift from “I loved you” (i.e., I used to be here) to the present tense, to claim her love as enduring and without end. *Tear*

Arang arrives outside the cave… where Joo-wal awaits. Ah, so she wrote him the other letter, telling him of her intentions. He asks if she really means to do this, and she nods.

He blocks her advance, however, fighting his tears to say that she’s quite cruel, that she gives no consideration to what he feels. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t deserve that consideration, but his pain is palpable and he’s trying to urge her against this crazy idea, so I’m cutting him a little slack here. Arang tells him it’s not about that, but offers to go the rest of the way alone.

Joo-wal pulls her back, telling her not to go. The move sends her whirling back against his chest, and the motion recalls Seo-rim’s last moments—only this time, it’s Joo-wal who remembers. He flashes back to Seo-rim darting in front to take the dagger, and how she fell at his feet with her last words calling to him.

Arang pulls away and hurries to the cave. Joo-wal stands there stunned speechless, finally putting together that Arang is Seo-rim.

Mu-yeon smiles to sense her visitor. Arang heads inside the dark wearing a grimly determined face. And nearby, Eun-oh runs madly up the mountainside.

COMMENTS

Oh man, did I love Lee Jun-ki today. I’ve been enjoying him all series long but he had a lot to work with today, running the gamut of emotions in one concise story arc that I also really appreciated (the conciseness, I mean). When they introduced the treason accusation at the end of last episode I was afraid this would be the conflict to take us through the final stretch of the show, like so many sageuks do at some point or other. Instead, they let Lord Choi sneer and smirk for a while, seemingly back our hero up against a rock, and then resolved it before the story had any time to lag.

Perhaps for a different kind of sageuk (say, one more politically inclined, or set at court) this kind of resolution is laughably simple, but it felt just right for this drama, which isn’t about those things. It’s more about how these machinations mean for our hero and how our good guys can best him and turn their attentions to more important matters. Namely, that whole heaven-hell dilemma and the twisted ethereal monster on the loose trying to upset the order of the universe. You know, that little thing.

This plot turn also gave me one of my favorite emotional moments from Eun-oh, after his father read the king’s order. It was such a small beat—a wordless moment that played out almost entirely as a fleeting facial expression—that I’m surprised how strongly it affected me. The primary emotion isn’t elation or amazement, as it is for everybody else, but this overwhelmed and overwhelming well of pathos. Like he can’t believe this show of support, the hand of solidarity, being extended to him.

I wonder if it’s a double-edged moment for him, as sharp and keen as it is comforting, because it’s this validation that he wasn’t expecting, that perhaps he’d believed was never his due because he’d been forsaken. It’s that curious in-between state of being an illegitimate son, particularly the higher up in status you go; there the rift is especially vast between the life (and honor, and respect) your bloodline commands, but from which you are not allowed to partake. Eun-oh has a kind father so his struggle isn’t, say, quite at the level of Hong Gil-dong (who famously “cannot call his father his father, or his brother his brother”), but we’ve seen that insecurity manifest itself at various points throughout. And thus we can presume Eun-oh became that cold, indifferent man to shield himself from the world’s rejection. To have the king not only back him up but praise him for his progressive ways… well, it explains the fullness of feeling in that moment.

I find it intriguing that Arang’s decision to give herself up is such a close echo of Mu-yeon’s own origin story—it’s her way of claiming a bit of agency in a situation that robs her of control. The winds (and whims) of Fate have seemingly shoved these two in an untenable situation, of giving them all the provisions to feel and cultivate love, but no way to actually act it out. Neither has been born into a situation where that love can be realized in a “normal” way, without breaking the laws of life and afterlife, or twisting the natural order of everything. And any way you shake it, the gods are telling them that you don’t get to keep this—it’s precious and dear and you can take a nice long look, but don’t you dare want it!—and moreover, that it’s not even right for them to want it.

So they do what they can to cling to whatever scrap they can, to resist the limitations of their supernatural Catch-22. What they end up with may not be anywhere near as close to the real thing they desperately want, but in the absence of anything better they’ll take it. So while I don’t love the shades of noble idiocy in her sacrifice, I bear with it because I do like how it rings true in this world, and how it connects these two opponents in a really fundamental way.

Of course, Arang and Mu-yeon are worlds apart, and Arang has additional reasons driving the decision; since giving herself up is the only way to have a shot at defeating Mu-yeon, I’m sure she’s comforting herself with the thought that at least this way, they’ll remember each other. Not that I find hers a selfish desire in the first place. All series long, she has faced this existential struggle to claim herself on her terms—to know she mattered. Her love of Eun-oh is just part and parcel of that. Here, the difference between Heroine and Evil Being makes itself clear: one lets her love pervert her very nature, and the other holds fast to it as a way of remaining true to herself.

I'm interested to find out what Arang's deepest desire is. To not be forgotten? If that's the case, her desire for Muyeon may very well be to die once Muyeon has entered as a way of defeating the demon fairy, retaining her identity and love, and being remembered by others.

I think Arang deepest desire is not to be forgotten & she would like to do something for EO... like she mentioned before... she would like to save EO mother ...and by saving EO mother she think will save EO too ~~~
To be honest ...I don't like her thought ... I think she is too stubborn ... she should know, if she possessed by a demon ...or died it will break Sato heart ...even more.
Basically , I don't really like Arang character here... she always sacrifice her self for her loved one. She should team up with Sato ... try to defeat the demon... at least she should tell Sato... or discuss things ..how to solve the problems. ShinMina acting is slightly ... toneless... boring ...stubborn & bit dumb !!!

Because in this part of the story they don't even have the slightest idea to defeat Mu Yeon. They only know one thing: that if Arang give her body to Mu Yeon, Eun Oh's mom might have the chance to live.

And it's totally obvious that she didn't tell Eun Oh because he won't allow it, duh.

I'm also bit sad that Arang lost her more spirited attitude that we can see in the first episodes. She changed when Seo Rim's memory slowly came back to her---and Seo Rim's a very refined lady. I can see that she resembles Seo Rim's attitude now, but we can still see traces of her strong personality she gained as Arang. Shin Mina's acting is good for me and she's definitely not dumb.

At least Arang's not a damsel in distress who waits for someone to save her, she wants to do something for the man she loves.

Uhm... both comments make sense to me. In my opinion ...it make sense to discuss with EO... although he might refused or not allowed her. But facing dangerous wench ...alone is bit too far ! But well, I think she is not dumb too. Her part is bit too slow...perhaps.

"I’m no evil genius (or am I?) but that just seems like standard evil operating procedure to me." Hahaha! I love this!

So, at least Arang still has the hairpin she secretly reclaimed from Eun Oh. I don't know if she can actually use it, but I bet she took it with her. And since Eun Oh is frantically chasing after her, he can at least use it against Mu Yeon.

I also want this to end happily. And I had a brilliant idea—even if Arang loses this body (you know, the one that can't die, but has no body heat), she still has a happily undecomposed body in the cemetary. I think the Jade Emperor purposely did that so she can return via a loophole in the bet.

I loved Eun Oh so much in this episode, too. He's had so many awesome moments and such great character development, but this episode went beyond all that. I didn't even know that I could love him more, but I really really do. He's just amazing.

Frankly speaking ...I detest Arang ...she could be...have something in her mind..but why she didn't discussed with Sato & team up .... with him... how to overcome the demon ??? Both of them already confessed their love. Now, the are couples. AT least she let him know... about her idea
and what she heard from Granny Shaman .....
And totally agree with you ..re: Sato. I'm so much in love with EO (Sato) too.... esp in this Episode... not only because of his character ...the way she protect Arang ... but also because of LJG "SUPERB " acting . His Charisma , his Charm, his Pains, his eyes..., his glare... really Shine.
How can we not Fall in love with such a great Man ( + Great
Actor) ...The way he portray EO Sato is amazing !!!! I'm not only LOVE HIM .....I'm Madly in LOve ... totally in LOve !!!

I love LJG superb acting in this drama.. He improves a lot after he return from his 2 years MS.. I LOVE HIM!

As for Arang, I think I can relate & understand her decision.. Like the analysis & discussions which we had shared with the others Soompiers yesterday, we love how the Writer developed Arang character from a spunky and reckless ghost to a mature and understanding lady..

Being in love is not always about possessing or being together with your loved once all the time. It is also about letting go and being selfless for the sake of your loved ones happiness..

Arang, after experiencing series of deaths and at the same time knowing her dateline as well as the possibility to forget each other if she goes to another life. It's understandable that she want to keep at least their memories of loving each other rather than forgetting about it..

Comparing LSR-JW love vs Arang-EO love vs MYeon-MYong love.. This drama display 3 types of love.

The first love of LSR towards JW, which is unrequited and shallow.. It breaks our heart when she's sacrificing herself to save her first love..

Arang's love towards EO is a slowly developing in this drama, they quarrel, they fight, they consult each other, they comfort each other and end up being soooo deep in love.. Both of them are willing to sacrifice themselves to save their other half.. It's a selfless & unconditional love.. Therefore, Arang is willing to give up her body as long as EO can get his mother back & as long as she can keep her memories with EO to last.. For me, this is a true love..

As for MYeon loves towards MYong, she has possesive type of love. She's willing to kill and end other people lives as long as she can get her love..

Like JE told Yeom Ra, human desires is not always bad.. If the human use their desires in a good way, it can even move the world. (Refer to ep 18)

Well, in short, I've learnt a lot from this drama.. From Arang particularly, from EO as well as from Myeon.. Kudos to the writer for such an original storyline and wonderful plot!

The whole scene as Arang is leaving the house "for the last time" was beautifully, beautifully directed. The camera tracks her "death march", capturing Shin Min Ah's despair while conveying all the town activity around her . . . just so good . . .

About Arang's noble idiot decision . . . keep this in mind, it's a ghost story. Whether it's an Asian ghost story or a Western ghost story, the climactic plot point usually involves the protagonist going straight into the trap. In addition, in an Asian ghost story, there's usually a overlapping themes of a prevailing grudge and the transience of life. That all has been written into her resolve to meet (give in?) the Witch.

yes, it was beautifully shot - it really fills you with the sense of all that she's giving up by making this decision, and Shin Mina acted it perfectly, she doesn't have to say a word but you can see that heartbreak and loss and yet resolve in Arang's face.

**coughHarryPottercough**

It's an old, OLD plot point - didn't Jesus himself go straight to his own death knowing what was waiting for him? The concept of self-sacrifice by a hero is something that spans across cultures, but maybe because people here see it in an Asian drama, they think it's mainly an Asian thing.

Belleza didn't say it was specifically an Asian thing, but applies to Western ghost stories too. Only the next line was specific to Asian ghost stories.

"Sometimes the right kind of desires have the monumental power to change the world..." - Jade

Do I dare to believe that Arang's move will be that momentous pivot that will change the fate of our hero and heroine?

I know that the conversation amnesiac Arang and Bang Wool had on existentialism will come back to haunt us. Little did I expect it to become the primary reason for Arang's decision to body exchange. Again, a very logical plot development from the PD.

EO has had a positive influence on Arang - now she takes time to reflect and think critically the way EO does. But overwhelmed by her immense sadness over the impending separation and inescapable fate of losing their memories of each other, Arang had slipped and given in to her inner desires. In this respect, I truly applaud EO's supernaturally strong will - his earnest belief in the futility of the whole body exchange business and flat refusal to trade with the devil, be it for the sake of his mom, for their love, for anything. Jade has really picked the right candidate for his task.

I wish I could shout in Arang's ears to let her know how futile this is. She should know that EO will never live happily knowing his beloved has been engulfed by a monster and will mindlessly seek solutions for her release for as long as it takes. Hardly the next best scenario that Arang think she will be getting by choosing to keep their memories intact.

If I recall rightly, EO's hairpin is still with Arang. I'm praying for some miracle to happen. May the body exchange process goes awry. JW, please stop being stunned. Do something!! Run!!

There's also been too much foreshadowing about Dol Swe becoming the next magistrate. Please, no more! I beg you! Never have I want a happy ending more than this!

I love your insights JK... it makes sense that Arang give in to her desire to remember her love till the end by trading her body to the crazy MYe...

I also believe JW will redeem himself by saving Arang.. N please Yeom Ra, have some mercy to that pitiable soul.. JW was manipulated by MYe.. Let us consider that he's trying to save Arang as the redemption for all his sins.. Yae??

But, I don't think Arang bring that hairpin when she met MYe.. We've been discussing about it a lot in Soompi forum..

Joo Wal will definitely do something! I feel it in my drama bones.

But, isn't the sacrifice of Arang giving herself up going to be a small temporary one? If she even does it... her spirit is going to be taken from her by the Jade Emperor on the third full moon? Is the Jade Emperor gonna not kill her just because she and Mu-Yeon are in the same body? Seems to me, Arang is not gonna be in this world for long, however she goes, whatever she does. I'm thinking this is all moot, cause Joo Wal's gonna save her from sacrificing herself. But even if she sacrificed herself, all it would do is prevent Eun Ho from being able to kill Mu Yeon, although his mother would be free.

Yes, Joo Wal will try to get in between MYe & Arang's body/soul transfer that will end up him dying - the bell will ring because it was Joo Wal who really killed Arang in the beginning.

2nd scenario: Eun Oh will get there before the transfer and he will stopped MYe from entering Arang's body. MYe will try to kill EO but mom still stuck in MYe will try to help her son & will kill herself using the hair pin ~ somehow during the fight EO will dropped it. MYe will die and so is mom then we will hear the bell ringing.

Arang will still die, EO will die or will do his lonely traveling/soul searching and, Dol Swe will be the new Saddo.

Gosh, this drama is driving me nuts! Thinking of so many possible things but at the same time hoping for a happy ending. I can't believe that we only have two episodes left...no more hot good looking Saddo?!!!

I am really fangirling you Javabeans. Then and now. You really write ever so nicely. You make the mundane come alive. The subtle lyrical beats matter. Never crass. Scene after scene unfolds right between the lines each time I read your recaps. I don't need a 720p or 1080p(well maybe to scrutinize if the actors got anything done or not -hee.)
I know you graduated from subbing, but can you go back? I miss how you put the emotions into the dialogue. Like melody to a song.

With only 2 episodes left, I wonder what the revelation behind EO's death when he was a child could be and how in the whole schema of things will that have an impact on upsetting Mu-Yeon's grand plan. I have a half-baked theory about how the usual person will have his spirit taken away by grim reapers, but in this case, EO's soul directly belongs to Jade so... what does that mean?

I thought of listing down the revelations I need from the remaining two episodes but realised it's too much trouble. There are just so many troubling issues that remained unresolved and we only have 2 more episodes!!

Trying to make some sense of the spirit entering and leaving the host part...

For Muyeon to enter someone's body, the host must be willing and Muyeon must fulfil the host's desire/wish. E.g. EO's mom wants revenge, so she allowed Muyeon to reside in her body, in return, Muyeon will trample over Lord Choi.

As for leaving the host, either (1) Muyeon leave at her will i.e. to enter another host's body, or (2) according to Bang-wool's grandma, something that the host's most desire enter into the body so that it weaken Muyeon thus forcing her out and then destroy her with Jade's weapon. And Jade said it must be done by someone with the same bloodline (this one, we know but our OTP don't know or do they know?).

We saw that EO's mom regretted immediately after Muyeon possess her when she saw her predecessor died on the spot, but Meyeon managed to overpower her, and continue to live there by eating pure souls every leap month? Meaning to say, once a contract is signed by the host, there is no turning back?

Option 1 (Muyeon leaving at her own will) is not a good idea to save EO's mom since the host drop dead immediately when Muyeon leaves (hope Arang remembers this!)

Option 2.... well, seems like desire is a double-edged sword. It can allow Muyeon to enter or weaken her. We saw that EO's mom almost won over Muyeon when EO is around so seeing EO is mom's next greatest desire since she had revenged?

Maybe Arang has hatched a plan on her own.
Plan A: To use mom's hairpin a.k.a Jade's weapon to draw out EO's mom's living desire to see EO since it's his gift to her, thus forcing Muyeon out and then kill her with the hairpin?

Plan B: If Muyeon manages to enter her body, she will kill herself with the hairpin?

Plan C: Joo-wal to do the deed if she fails? If not, I don't see why she needs to inform Joo-wal about her intention, and him calling her cruel.

A flaw in her plan (if they are her plans).... neither Arang or Joo-wal are bloodkin to Muyeon or EO's mum. >.<

Can't believe only 2 more episodes left. So enjoyable having Lee Jun Ki to watch these past few weeks.

Had to get out the tissues again... Arang's last meal for Eun Oh and her farewell letter brought me to tears...Shin Min ah was so wonderful.. especially when Arang is with Joo Wal who finally gets the realization he's the killer of Seo Rim and she's Arang.

WOW! So many wonderful scenes in this episode.I still think Eun Oh will have a hand in killing the Demon Mom using her own hairpin because he's a blood kin. I hope Eun Oh and Arang can be together in Heaven in the end.

Random comment.

I think Arang must have asked JW to do something in her letter, which is why he came to the cave to meet her. That could be also why JW called her cruel (for asking him to do xxxx knowing that he loves her).

I just hope that whatever Arang is thinking of doing makes sense and not just because she wants to give herself up for EO. She is meant for something much bigger than that. She knows it and she knows her mission.

Ultimately, the evil one will perish (this can mean any FORM of perish) and the good ones will be saved. AND, true love will never die. True love can take any form too. Doesn't mean that if someone is dead his/her love is dead too. True love transcends time and space.

I certainly hope this is the morale of the story.

PS. I still want JW to get his salvation please!!><

I wasn't really a fan of Lee Jun Ki in the past but I must say I love him in this drama. To me, he looked too much like a pretty boy for me to take him seriously in the past. However, his face has filled out and he looks less pretty and more masculine. The way he emoted all the different feelings just by his eyes and facial expressions is beautiful to watch. This drama is a keeper for me.

PS for the pseudo-psychological assessment above, a drama is a drama, for most people, a vehicle to escape reality. It is in it's fickle imperfections that we know it is, after all, a drama.

First of all, I also hope for a happy ending but

I somehow have a sneaky feeling that Arang will go to heaven alone. Eun Oh will remain on earth as Jade's special agent to fight demons. He will be promised a reunion with Arang once his missions on earth are accomplished. In a year or two we may have a new drama about the magistrate's new adventure. Arang will make guest appearance and be honored as the magistrate's true love. Joo Wal may become a new grim reaper and sort-of Eun Oh's brotherly rival.

A cheesy hollywood-style ending, but it seems the magistrate character (and Joo Wal) have potential to go further. The reborn/reincarnation is gonna kill that. And Eun Oh as grim reaper kinda puts constraint on future stories (earth/human are better materials for new stories, I think). For Arang, I think her story completes here and there's not much else to be added.

As far as the ending, we must remember that technically, both EO and AR are dead, and have been reanimated by JE on a temporary basis. I just don't see our great couple together on Earth. But I am remaining hopeful that JE will grant AR's deepest desire, which I think is to be human. Otherwise, let them be a reaper couple. If they become butterflies or flowers or goats, I will break my computer!

Dol Soe and the three stooges talked and I think the idea of him becoming magistrate was thrown out there to prepare us. He is going to take over the good works in Miryang after EO leaves/dies.

This has been such a wonderful show. While I can't wait for next week to see what happens, each day just brings us closer to the end. :(

Thank you so much for the awesome recaps here. I look forward to them almost as much as the show itself.

I so loved this episode. As usual especially for Eun Ho. Oh my! I love my heroes noble! (Please, Ma Ru, please, remember that!) And I like them to be nice guys as well. Dang, Eun Ho, you rock!

I also like the various checks and balances in this episode. When Joo Wal and the Bangs are watching the Magistrate's nobility, it's such a moment of growth for fence-sitters. I think those are the only characters who are not totally good or totally evil, the only characters capable of moral growth or moral decline. And we see how both Joo Wal and the Bangs grow toward goodness...and casting away their own sense of self-preservation in order to do the right thing. Oh sure, Joo Wal kinda wants to sorta kill Arang and Eun Ho but he really isn't able to do it. That pesky conscience thingey.

Oh, happy ending, please come! My Eun Ho has wept too much, too much. Same for my Joo Wal! Divine Jade Emperor please, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease find a way to save and redeem that little lost boy's soul!

As for fighting skills Joong-ki wouldn't have a chance. Woosie wounded pretty boys are rarely good fighters.

Joongki was in Deep Rooted Tree, though only in the beginning coz he played the role of the young King Sejong. I've seen him before in Sungkyungkwan Scandal and I liked him there but he definitely earned my respect after Deep Rooted Tree. It's a really good drama if you're looking for somethig to watch^^

0

Somewhat agree with your opinion... you were right... usually Woosie wounded pretty boys are rarely good fighters. And KangMaru - Song Joong Ki Face is slightly toneles... he needs to develop his facial expression. I've watched Arang & Nice Guy . SJK needs to learn more to express his emotions... I should say ...still too far. To be honest I do like him. I mean in SKKS - SJK is delightful to see. But for more serious role.... I'm totally agree... with those girls ( Yaya, Joon Girl ,etc) ..Junki is 'unbeatable". I've watched his first movie / first drama... he is "talented" since the beginning... To say...The King's Man - he is unbelieve able talented & genius. He is an expert - he really know hoe to express those complicated feelings ( combination feelings : anger, hurt, pain, love, etc) . Me too, I wish he could wins an awards for his role. He deserved it !

Both man - LJK & SJK are Handsome & Good Looking. I like SJK but I love LJK. LJK has more "Flavor / Taste"...than SJK. He is not only Handsome or Good Looking. His Charisma is unbeatable.

0

I know It's bit cruel ...but comparing LJK with (SJK or LMH ) is like "Heaven " & "Earth " . Junki shi is an expert compare to those 2. No offense....

0

I've been fan-girling on Lee Jun-ki since episode 1 and I know he is an amazing actor but he is not the only one. Song Joong Ki is just as good. Maybe you didn't watch him in "Tree With Deep Root?. He was amazing there and thats what you should compare to the Jun-ki of Arang because thats Soong Ki's sageuk performance that made him a serious actor.
The only thing that Jun-ki would do better than Soong Ki would be the fight scene in my opinion.

Yup, I didn't watch the whole of three with deep root, only SJK part, and I know he is a good actor, in SKKS, I even love home more than PYC, he portrayed ho's role and the best than his other costars,he even better than LMH IMO, but still, can't beat Lee Joon Gi, IMO, sorry :( not only about the fighting scene, haha, not about that.
Do you only watch him on Arang and the Magistrate or have watched his other production?

0

I've wacthed every drama/movie that he was in. We just have different opinions.

0

He is the reason why I'm watching Arang.

0

Sorry, I did so many typo, lol, yup just different opinion. :)

0

LJK is well known & acknowledged as serius actor beside his pretty face... since the very beginning. Like one of commentator (Albert) said LJK is very committed actor. Not only he never use double stunt but his acting skill is superb & praised by netizens & world wide. So it's unwise to compare LJK with other actors... I agree in this point. He has won many awards in many roles.

Arang sadly misunderstood EO.

Granted, EO's wish is to be reunited with his mom but that is only a manifestation of his deepest fear - one of rejection, of being spurned by the one he loves, of abandonment. It fully explains the emotions he had at the moment when his father came to his rescue. He has no reason to hope that someone would come to save him - the society has no place for a person like him and given his belief that a person could only bear responsibility for his own sufferings (even as he come to realise his ability to help others through his position). The royal decree is like a symbol of recognition of EO's existence and acceptance as a person in society, even though he has never actively seek that kind of existential recognition but choose to live his life on his own terms.

In Ep 10, JB quipped that EO's statement about his father's ability to exert influence sounded oddly blase. Retrospectively, I think EO himself couldn't, or wouldn't bring himself to believe his father's unconditional love for him, given his odd existence in life - given up by his own mother as a child, being an illegitimate son forever branded an outcast of society and being able to see and hear ghosts. EO's greatest weakness explains fully the reason he seeks his mother - to understand why she chose to abandon him and the kind of existence he means to her.

Existentialism, thus, isn't a problem that is unique only to Arang. In more ways than one, Arang and EO both share the same oddness in life - not knowing how their existence relate to the rest of the world. Alas, Arang hasn't come to understand it - just when EO is beginning to step out of one abyss he is thrust into another by having Arang disappearing on him.

JW also suffers a similar existential problem - a desire to be accepted by society. The greatest difference between EO and JW is the latter's overindulgence in craving society's recognition and his foolishness in believing that make-believe can become real, that he can become a respectable person if he does what he does, killing innocents and choosing to take the easy way out by conveniently forgetting his murders. JW existed. Once. In the heart of the dead LSR. JW could have had what he wanted so badly if he hasn't been so blind, that all he ever really needed is strength and the ability to love, someone else other than himself.

The same could be said for Mu-Yeon who based her existence on Mu-Young, such that when she lost grips with reality, the only thing to do was to grab whatever ramnants' left to fill her empty heart. I think Mu-Young's death, or rather his departure from the world (since he's already dead so the next thing that's left is to become nothingness) will be the only resolve for her in the end.

I don't think Arang (or Eunoh) knows what effect will be for earth, heaven, hell, or the universe if Mu Yeon gets Arang's body. As the audience we know, but character-wise, isn't it only the jade Emperor, Hades, and Mu Yeong privvy to that information, or am I confused? If that is the case, I think it only means more that Mu Yeong will have a huge role in what plays out in the last two episodes if this most amazing series.

C'mon, we knew all along it would come down to Arang willingly giving herself up. Otherwise how else would we get the demon fairy to swop bodies. Of course then demon catcher brother and magistrate will swoop in and intervene at the opportune moment ... I think the scriptwriter had no choice but to go down the sacrificial path to tie things up.

Let's just enjoy this drama to the very end, like we have been since day one. Lee Jun Ki made a fabulous comeback. Not everyone can cut a dashing figure in period costume, but he sure does. And what a convincing pairing Jun Ki and Min A! They really made this story work. This drama saved the Fall K-Drama season, don't you guys agree?

I love how you summed up the parallelism between Arang and Mu-yeon's sacrifices and desires for love. But I don't think that it's noble idiocy when in fact there's another reason why she's going to Mu-yeon. Would it still be noble idiocy if nobility's no longer the only reason?

And I still have a feeling that Lord Kim's the Jade Emperor. -_- Or at least, that it was he who went to Eun-oh this time. But then that would mean that there's a shred of falsity with the order that he read. Or how he treats Eun-oh. Or... GAH. IDK.

The Joo Wal character is really well done. I like how he teeters on the brink of good and evil, so that we are still guessing whether it is he who will save Arang.

I think it is to preserve this possibility that the writer makes Arang take off on her own.

It's interesting how the comments veer towards disgust and fury at Arang's sacrifice, but not at Eun Oh's sacrifice in the same episode. The quick save by his father also surprised me. I get that the Choi corruption storyline needs to be quickly disposed of, but this felt just a bit too convenient.
I would have preferred something like Arang having to go to the cave alone because her time had run out and Eun Oh was still imprisoned.

Still, I completely, completely love the writer.

Eun Oh's case is like a spur of the moment. He was holding himself until Lord Choi was really gonna kill Arang. So his reaction is natural given the circumstance and therefore acceptable.

For Arang, she had time to think over and over again. So I (and maybe others) kinda expect that at least she and Eun Oh should sit down and talk things thru.

Yeah, where's the hairpin? You don't put it in there, show how important it is, and not use it at the end right?

Only Eun Oh can use the hairpin. Maybe he can use it then Mu-yeon will try to possess Arang's body. Then we wait until the Gods take her away.

First of all, thanks Javabeans for your recap!

I'm thinking of the ending and I know this won't happen unless it's an American or Japanese horror thriller supernatural movie. All of us want a happy ending and we all want Eun Oh and Arang together, right? Hear this:

Mu-yeon possesses Arang's body and becomes immortal. Then Mu-yeong finally helps her and then possesses Eun Oh's body so they can be together. Voila! All love teams are happy, and all memories are intact until Eun Oh dies and Mu-yeong changed bodies.

What a twisted ending this could be, but hey, no one will need to die early and Eun Oh's mother will be free.

Another possible ending:
Mu-yeon possesses Arang's body. Mu-yeong still possesses Eun oh's body, but not to help her but to kill Mu-yeon. Because if M-yeon gets that immortal body, nobody can kill her because Arang doesn't have remaining blood relatives (unless Hades and Jade decide its time to collect her body). But if Mu-yeong takes over Eun Oh's body, he can kill Mu-yeon/Arang because their souls are still connected by, uh, blood or whatever. Then Mu-yeong exits from Eun Oh's body and kills Mu-yeon with Jade's knife. Then because Arang's and Eun-Oh souls have weakend, both dies and goes to heaven. I think if they ascend to heaven together, they'll still remember each other, just like those tragic siblings.

Sorry. I can't think of any ending that is not tragic.

I'm really rooting for sato Dol-Swe. They're giving hints, even if its only some lines. But still, he could be.

Which really means both Eun Oh and Arang die at the end. Maybe both can be reincarnated as butterflies, or Eun Oh becomes a flowering peach tree and Arang becomes the butterfly.

What the heck, just as long as they still love and remember each other even if they're dead, that'll be okay. But of course, I still want them to live but that's not for me to decide.

Until next week!

This show is just so tough to call. I think it's a little strange how upset some people are getting over Arang potentially sacrificing herself for Eun Oh's happiness when she hasn't actually done it yet. Yes, there is a lot of potential for the writers to really screw up here, but they have done pretty well with the rest of the show so I am moving forward with cautious optimism. That said, there are just way too many variables to reliably call the ending at this point and it's driving me crazy!

We don't actually know if Arang has something up her sleeve. I know for sure that the Jade Emperor does. There are still some things we don't know, as evidenced by the fact that the bell has not sounded. This means Arang STILL has not figured out the full mystery behind her death. Eun Oh could possibly show up with enough time to keep her from doing anything stupid. Ju Wal might sacrifice HIMSELF for Arang! After all, he just realized she and LSR are the same person, and now that he knows LSR really loved him, etc. There are still too many loose ends, and the writers have done a great job up til now surprising me with new twists that I expect nothing will go exactly as I imagine it will.

That said, I do have one prediction, and that is that everything will conclude in ep 19 and ep 20 will be epilogue. I just hope it's a happy epilogue, and I think it will be just from the tone of the story, but I honestly don't know. It could go either way! And that's why this drama is so amazing and FRUSTRATING at the same time.

I think Arang is only a "Bait" to catch MYeon.. Do you people note that actually MYeon do not know about Arang's dateline??

Will that immortal body eventually die after 3 moons?? When her body die, then MYeon spirits automatically out from the body & MYong might have the chance to stab her with JE knife..

That is the questions which been playing in my head, I can't even sleep thinking about it..

I better discuss this with the other soompiers..

Lol, dear, you're too obsessed with the muscle :) he's not a muscle freak to build some abs, he's body not kind of Birain's body who build up for muscle pretty well, his body is more athletics and flexible, and for me, he doesn't need ABS to show how sexy he is, Just imagine him callingmy name with intonation like the way called Arang just makes me shivered. His poise, gait, his gesture, his Glare ( Eyes), the way he grabs Arang ....and the voice when he call Arang ...that's Sexy !!! Everything ...about LJK is So Sexy !!! Even a Man find him ...SEXY !!! This kind of SEXYNESS will last forever... not just physical. Something from inside is ... everlasting !!! I love this man (LJK ) !!!

Although I think he would fit with Non-Sageuk too, indeed it's his capability to fit for every role he plays. He went to Arang And the magistrate because this story is fresh and new, and yes, he said he is fit with Sageuk's clothes, lol (The King and The Clown, Iljimae, now, Satto armor, I have no complaint about that)

But well Arang & the Magistrate is the worst ( * or I should say is The Best ! ) ...he made me "Madly in Love "....or totally in love. This guy ..drives me crazy .

Plus he can show his other qualities that other man with abs don't have and that is he can kick ass without using stuntman!!! He even did some of the stunts choreography himself plus he's a great hot good looking guy with great talent in acting! A great package deal for this drama :-)

@Arang2soul, totally agree with you. If an actor can show his mettle without having to become undressed, that shows something isn't it? I watched JG Style ep 5 where LJG trained so hard for the stunts, really incredible. I have watched his previous works before, and they had much more fighting scenes than Arang and the Magistrate (i.e. Iljimae). I have been rewatching Iljimae this weekend and oh boy, the stunts that he had to do, for every episode no less!! You can really see the kind of efforts that LJG wants to put in.

But the best difference between Arang and the Magistrate and his previous works? I think he has successfully show that he's not just a pretty boy that people think he is (NOT that he is not pretty, in fact he still is and doesn't even look like he grew older!!), but that he can act in a mature role and be totally HOT, SEXY and MANLY as well! Love him to bits!

@Joongirl, I read about the Tweet too. Hope his next project is a drama rather than an album or concert (then we won't get to see him on screen). But then even the most popular actors in Korea hardly get more than one drama per year.. some even every 2 years. While I hope we won't have to wait for that long, I hope he gets a well-deserved rest after his current filming ends. Feel very sorry about his eyebags. Next weekend though, he's going to Japan for a press release of Arang and the Magistrate where it's going to start airing and sing his OST live. We can watch it online. I hope some nice souls will put it on the website and share the video :)

0

Do i know you somewhere?? Haha, cos somehow as LJG's fan we may know each other without notice :)

0

You should watch ...the king's man too.... you will be surprised , how pretty ..he is. I like him since the king's man.
Btw, i've read about his wrinkles / eye bags too but he says he doesn't care & will not do anything...

0

@donna, Yes, I've watched his previous works (i.e. The King and the Clown. TBDW, Iljimae, Hero..) But it was Iljimae that I watched first which got me started. Actually, LJG is kind of disturbing to me sometimes haha.. esp when he starts to act all girly, I totally get goosebumps :P But he's still one of my favourite actors, good looking, good acting skills, dance well (too many male actors only know how to act angsty). Objectively, I admit his singing can be improved but I don't think it's too much of a problem since singing is only a more direct means of engaging with his fans. He has mentioned this and think of himself first and foremost as an actor, so that's fine.

I was watching his J Style MV and OMG! I think he can very well take on a sci-fic role as the devil's spawn or an irresistible vampire.. totally seductive!! If you think his eyes are expressive in Arang, u should see him in this MV... *swoon*

It's an army tradition. That's more the point. It's not just abs, it's *post army* abs. (Shower scene). It's a running joke, so I thought I'd point it out... he's not fulfilled his obligation. ^.~

This episode has so many good moments:

1. The scene where Eun Oh cried because of relief/incredulity/happiness when Lord Kim read the King's order. Gotta love how Lee Jun Ki expressed so many emotions in this scene. The simplicity and promptness of the resolution to the Lord Choi problem is kinda funny but I guess the production people had no choice since the drama's ending soon and they have to focus on more important things.

2. The reunion between our lead and secondary couples. Dol Soe and Bang Wool's made me laugh out loud while Eun Oh and Arang's made me go "aww".

3. The way Arang said goodbye to Bang Wool. At first, Arang simply went to Bang wool to gain whatever she wants and Bang wool just considered her as a nuisance but now they've become really good friends who understand and care for each other.

4. Arang's letter to Eun Oh. It's heartbreakingly sad and I can sense some foreshadowing going on.

Speaking of foreshadowing, since this show was written in a way where everything can be treated as clues, here are some things that were hinted at and questions that are yet to be answered:

1. Bang wool's (fake-but-could-not-be-fake) prediction that Eun Oh will die early if he continues to meddle in other people's business

2. The possibility that Dol Soe could be the next magistrate. Eun Oh told Dol Soe he'd make a good magistrate more than once, one of the Bangs dreamt of Dol Soe being the magistrate, etc. It's cute and all but I really don't want Satto to die and be replaced especially since he can still do a lot of things for Miryang. :(

3. Arang comparing herself to a butterfly.

4. Arang's original body not being decomposed.

5. Jade not ringing the bell.

6. Lord Choi knowing that Lee Seo Rim was the "girl who went wrong" even if he wasn't in the shack that night.

Ah! So many things to be resolved. I hope the drama will wrap everything up nicely and not leave any loose ends.

Lastly, I want to comment that while seemingly stupid at first, Arang's self sacrifice isn't stupid at all. Instead of just waiting for her expiration date and going to a place where her memories will be meaningless, she chose to do something meaningful for Eun Oh instead. AND she could pave a way for Mu Yeon to be defeated.

I really hope this drama will have a good ending. OR ELSE.

Seriously, there's still plenty of things left over...especially that bell that has tolled yet. I wonder what's left to uncover...Eu Oh's mother's real desires? Eun Oh discovering that he actually died and was revived again by Jade Emperor? Cause the Jade Emperor did say that they would meet again when Eun Oh will remember their connection, right?

Also what will happen to Eun Oh once his "time is over"? When will that be? So many questions still.....the ending definitely has to be good if there are still so many loose ends.

yeah, one of the things we often miss in all our love for LJK is the fact that the entire cast has such good chemistry with each other, not just romantic couples but also friends - I love watching EO and Dol-swe, and Arang with Bang-wool both before and after she became human, and even the brief scenes of Arang talking to Dol-swe and EO talking to the shaman, especially in Episode 11 when she asks him about the kiss, kekeke

(and of course I love the three idiot Bangs too)

Javabeans, it was not just you who became emotional with Lee Jun Ki's scene when he was crying after his father reading the king's orders. That was intense for me too and so much was loaded into that single scene alone that I am simply awed. Just loved it.

This episode was gripping. There is something so satisfying about justice being meted out so well: Lord Kim backing Eun Oh, thus backfiring against Lord Choi, and Eun Oh overtaking Lord Choi for once and for all. So glad action was taken immediately against that old punk, lol. I also appreciate the change in the three Bangs' attitudes and support towards the Magistrate and Dol Soe: love some of that brotherhood action.

Now about Arang: I felt the pangs of heartaches for her. I fear what will happen now that Arang is going straight to the lion's (or in this case evil fairy's) den. On one hand, I hope Eun Oh will reach in time and prevent it...but on the other hand, a perverse side of me wants to see what happens if the soul transfer actually happens. I get the feeling, it will be some pretty epic stuff.

Whatever will happen, I'm already starting to feel sad that next week will be the last week for AatM. :(

Yes, I'd like to see how devilish Arang can get, I'd like to see how SMA pull it off, because s0 far I've seen only LJK's range of emotions here and am satisfied with it but not so much with Mina-sshi's...I mean, yes she has played feisty, kind, tender, awe, surprise and mischief but still in goodwill which suits her, so I want her to take more challenge by displaying a villainous streak :) It's only for a while, though as we all know that she gets to expire for the evil to get expelled out of her bod.

The big question for me is will the 3 full moons rule remain after Mu Yeon possessed Arang body? Since I remember there is this heaven fear that Mu Yeon will success and lead to heaven collapse... I'm afraid that once Mu Yeon possessed arang that means those 3 full moon won't work for the body... I'm not quite sure with arang spirit..
this drama is so good... even in their last 2 episodes still make us guessing like crazy..
I hope they make special for explaining all heaven rules... so that in the end we understand all...

I think that Arang is much smarter than we give her allowance for
1. remember that from get go, she has always insisted that she will never lose herself
2. she knows that the magistrate will follow and find her somehow, why did she give the letter to the seer? she could have left it in her room, but doing that she could not ensure that he followed her asap.
3. she intend for them to kill the "parasite" and the only way she can do that and not kill his mother is to allow her access to her body but she is strong enough to resist her. also, I think that they will end up together, remember that the magistrate is also "special" because when he was a child he died but the Jade Emperor brought him back to life.who knows if he is not like Arang
I okay as long as it ends all mushy and lovey and the guy gets the girl even if to accomplish that both ends up being"ghosts", that is a possibility.

I don't think so, it's just the way her character developed as she lived more of her 'grace period' as a human. She's not exactly as she was at the start of the story, and that's only expected.

And she definitely still has some of that old ghost sass, look at her yelling at Lord Choi at EO's interrogration, Bang-wool has to actually hold her back, lol.

What the Jade Emperor said earlier on in the episode -- that desire sometimes has the power to change the world -- makes me think that Arang is going to pull through. Arang's pure desire to save Eun-oh and Mom (not the Evil Demon one) further distinguishes her from Evil Demon Mom's corrupt/self-centered desire. If Mu-yeon and Mu-young are the couple to disappoint the Jade Emperor, Eun-oh and Arang will be the ones to prove him right -- that humans (and ghost-humans?) are capable of extraordinary things... and of attaining happy endings. I hope. I would love to see Shin Min-ah play Evil Demon Mom, though, just for a sec! I can totally see her being like Frodo near the ringwraiths...

IMO she's not totally in love with satto, I do love bangwool acts more than her in some episodes. Weird thing is when she's portraying Lee Soe Rim's feeling towards Joo wal, she's okey, I believe she was falling in love with him, as Arang with Satto, something lack, I dunno, maybe it's just me, It's satto who has a suitable expression about his feeling and saves the show, for me, their chemistry was good when they're bickering, lol
