Character lineup for School’s student cast

Lee Jong-seok, Kim Woo-bin

Finally, some details about 2013 School! Other than the previously released bits about there being actors playing teachers, and actors playing students, that is. Because when your title is School, those don’t count as plot points.

As we already know, the main leads in the younger generation will be Lee Jong-seok and Kim Woo-bin, who’ve both played endearing high school characters in recent history (High Kick 3 and A Gentleman’s Dignity, respectively). On the girls’ side, Park Se-young (Faith) goes from queen to teen as the main lead, and 5dolls idol Ryu Hyo-young plays a supporting character. In the teachers’ generation, we have Daniel Choi and Jang Nara as opposites who probably attract; he’s wildly popular, rich, and smart, while she’s more our everywoman type.

Lee Jong-seok’s character is named Go Nam-soon and just wants to live an ordinary life with the simple goal of getting that high school diploma. But contrary to his wishes, “unexpected circumstances” arrive and shake up his calm environment, and spur him to grow up.

Lee’s dong-gap buddy Kim Woo-bin (both are 1989-ers) appears to be at the core of the sudden shake-up as mysterious transfer student Park Heung-soo. He has flunked a grade and been held back; a rebellious attitude masks his loneliness, since he acts out as a result of having to give up his dream.

Park Se-young, Ryu Hyo-young

Park Se-young’s character is Song Ha-kyung, who’s the girl who seems to have everything: good looks, good grades, good family. But she’s fixated all her efforts purely into getting results on paper, scoring the high marks and getting into a prestigious college, “without a dream driving her goals.” I feel like this is a type that should speak to a lot of students who are pushed to achieve at extreme levels, but who then find themselves adrift when let loose into the real world.

Ryu Hyo-young appears to be the opposite as a tough tomboy, Lee Kang-joo. She’s got a carefree attitude with an easygoing personality, though you probably don’t want to piss her off since “her foot moves faster than her words.”

I’m feeling optimistic with the characterizations, which indicate room for growth and development on multiple fronts. Chemistry will have a lot to do with how well they jell, but as for potential it’s all there. The show is described as tackling realistic situations to cut straight to the heart for students and parents alike, which suggests that it’ll have a less slapstick/sitcommy vibe and go more for poignant and lightly dramatic. I dig that a lot, since I’m all for more Answer Mes and Shut Ups in dramaland. *knocks wood*

2013 School follows Oohlala Spouses and premieres in early December.

I always dislike the idea of idols acting but we'll see how it goes. For everyone else that has been casted so far, I'm super excited.
I loveeeddddd Shut Up but mostly because of all that friendship between the boys.

I dislike Taiwan Idol dramas probably for the same reasons I dislike idols acting. Some of them really can't be up to par with an actual actor.

Was that your reason, too?

Out of all these actors/actresses, there's only one idol actress and the rest are not exactly rookies as well, so I'm really not worried (:

Ooh, this sounds good.
Aside from the idol girl who I'm not familiar with, I like all of the other actors a lot, and I'm all for this heartwarming Breakfast Club type premise.

The descriptions of this character describe me perfectly. Looking in retrospect as a senior in college, I feel lost as I am living without a dream. I have been a hardcore pre-med but I sometimes question my motivation. Perhaps I will develop passion for a career path (maybe medicine maybe research?) in the near future. Only time will tell.

This is kind of off-topic here. Sorry for making a post that's somewhat unrelated to this drama. =)

I can only imagine that kind of pressure and lifestyle since I grew up on my own like a borderline girl and with modest ambition. Success Race seems like a recurrent and chronic problem in Asian countries. Thanks for sharing your experience, that's one of the cool things with dramabeans.
Hope you will find your way.

I can understand what you're going through. I'm a senior in high school and I'm always asked what career I'm aiming for. I'm going to be applying to colleges with the mindset of majoring in Biology and minoring in Asian Studies/Korean Studies. I'm probably going to go on to med school after that to get a doctorate. Your post reminds me of the times I think and wonder of I'm going to become a doctor for myself or because that type of thinking was imposed on me because of my parents. It's unnerving not knowing the source of your motivation. I've sometimes thought to just pursue art or photography, but I consider those hobbies and I'm not sure if I'm good enough to make it in their respective fields. Sorry, I'm rambling, I'll stop before I end up writing an essay.

Hullo. You sound like me. I graduated with a Biology degree and a minor in Asian Studies. But contrary to my aspirations (possibly due to my parents admiration of the doctor profession) at enrollment I was no-long pre-med. It's a difficult decision, but I had to talk it out with my parents, explain why I want to do what I want to do, and why I felt getting an MD as a shadow dream, a dream I really didn't want. I enjoy what I do now. So my advice to you, is just enjoy your time, follow the more natural career path, and don't force anything on yourself, you'll discover a LOT in college, especially about yourself.

Thank-you for your advice! :)
I really hope that going to college will help me in deciding what and who I want to be. I feel like I never had a chance to explore other possible professions. I mean, it's not like I can go through every single possible profession on earth and choose as if I'm at a vending machine. I am hopeful that my college experience will open my eyes to new experiences and things. Maybe I'll end up as an OB/GYN aiding the poor in some desolate region or in a suburban town, or I could become a photographer for National Geographic taking pictures in the Savannah, the Amazon, or Africa. :) Who knows what life I'll choose? I just want the one that'll make me the happiest. I'll keep your advice in mind as I continue on to college. Thank-you once again! :D

Yup yup, I feel the same way. I'm at my last year of highschool and I have no idea what I'm doing. Whenever I think about college I always have this littlenpanick attacks.

So, this premieres un December huh? That' s the time when I would be applying to colleges. Let's hope PSY's character can help us with thus. Even just a bit.

So drama, please be good! This is the first time I'm actually counting on a drama for my personal life lol.

i just graduated from college in may, and i'm taking a gap year as i apply to medical school, so i feel ya. i was never a hardcore premed, but as i kept chugging along the path, i found that medicine is something that i have become passionate about, especially the caring aspect.

don't feel bad if you don't feel like you have a passion for anything right now. the big unspoken secret about adulthood is that most people *don't* start out with a passion. in fact, the "find and pursue your passion" thing was a product of the baby boomers, and is an unreal expectation placed on our generation (cal newport has a book and several articles on the subject). the only thing that i've ever really known that i was passionate about are fairy tales and folklore and mythology, and i knew that wasn't what i wanted to pursue for my career.

really the best most of us can do is keep trying things. if you find something you like, stick with it a little longer. most people gradually become passionate about the things they do the longer they spend time with them, rather than start out immediately passionate about the subject. everything you experience is not wasted--if nothing else, it'll show you that maybe this isn't the right path for you, and allow you to keep searching.

in the words of the musical avenue q, "everyone's a little unsatisfied [...] but only for now"

This is so true. Those people who start with a passion are rare and blessed. Narae has a good suggestion to try different things to find what you can enjoy. Good luck to all of you who are finding your way.

This was exactly me three years ago (and I'm still working through related issues now). If I may give some unsolicited advice: it's fine to question your motivation - it's always important to take the time to think about what you really want. And it's never too late to have a dream :)

I totally get what you're feeling! As a medical student, I'd advice you to do short attachments in whatever area you're interested in just to get a feel for it. Medicine, surgery & research are actually so different, but if you try them out and can't imagine yourself doing this type of job for at least the next 5years, then maybe this is not for you. Hope you do find a goal to work towards eventually!!!

I must add that medicine does grow on you though & you'll come to love interacting with patients (though there are always bad days when you feel really useless on the wards and patients don't want to cooperate...)

On a completely different note...LEE JONG SEOK!!! I don't think I would have finished SeGa if it wasn't for him, Secretary Kim & Yoo In Na

It can't possibly be worse than Ooh-la-la Spouses, a drama that angered and insulted and depressed me so much I gave up after two episodes. If that's considered funny, I'll take a melo any day.

I am cautiously optimistic, as Kim Woo-bin was one of the few really great things about AGD (I could have watched a whole series about his budding parent/child relationship with Park Min-sook), Lee Jong-seok had a sensitive and gutsy turn as Oska's gay admirer in Secret Garden, and Park Se-young has done a great job in Faith, bringing a lot of humor and charm to her Queen...she is so believable as a woman in love. So they have the genesis of a great cast, it's just a question as to whether or not they've got a good story and halfway decent direction (unlike Faith, still hobbling along under it's lame, lame, director).

I will give my take if you allow: The body switching antics are getting old rapidly cause actors overact (+ we all know that show which was good in the field) and the husband is just an hateful character. From what I could read on multiple blogs, it's love or hate at first sight with this drama. I personally keep watching it for the 2 second male leads and for 1 funny scene here and then. I FF a lot in fact.

I honestly liked her in her precedent roles but not here. And so the male lead. I think it's a problem of artistic choice: It's hard to mix dramatic stuff and goofy comedy, it feels off. Very tricky.

For me, the problem is the OTP - I not only wouldn't wish the OTP to be together, I think he ought to be boiled in oil. The supposed "hero" is a liar, a chauvinist, a manipulator, a taker - he is rude and ugly, inside and out. And he is an unrepentant Cheaty McCheaterpants.
In the first few episodes they juxtapose the wife's tears, shock, despair, and crisis-induced, life-threatening bout of asthma with the husband laughing, smiling, making love to his callow mistress in the bedroom of the apartment that the married couple originally bought for themselves. Yeah, that's comedy for me. Not.

IMHO, I think the show is great. I've caught up with the latest episodes and if you're the type who likes redemption, I recommend you watch it. Yes, the husband is a scum but I think that's what makes the drama so much more interesting because when you see him start to regret things and realize his wrongdoings, it's like "YES!" Yeah, I'm the type who'd rather see people do good after being bad than see them be punished for whatever wrongdoing they've done. Ha...

First 2 episodes are slow and drag a bit but the funny and the melo collide really nicely.

It almost seems like it is an obligatory to put at least one rich, smart, good looking male character in every k-drama for the sake of becoming female viewers' object of fantasy no matter how unmatched the character is with the drama background. Sigh.

Well, I've had some smart and good-looking teachers. Rich? Not so much. I mean, they're a TEACHER. Yes, they should be paid more since they mold the minds of the future generations, but they don't. Soooo, 2 out of 3? We could just pretend the rich part was a typo. (>.>) (<.<) *whispers* No one needs to know...
OR....he could just be teaching cause he's so rich that he got bored having awesome expensive parties and lounging around in his awesome house/apartment all day that he was like, "Hey! Why don't I see what teaching is like? It can't be too hard since I have a (presumably) above average IQ as all rich, good-looking men in dramas do."

Yeah...that's all I got.

I FINALLY watched Shut Up (more like marathoned) and that was a great ride - a good exploration of finding your place and staying true to yourself, finding personal dreams, and leaving your friends without losing them. One of the best things about Shut Up (and other high school dramas like Answer Me, What's Up, Dream High in a sense) is how they paint scenarios for different characters and having the characters clash as a result of their different conflicts, and each of them is involved in the heart of the conflict. But they also grow alongside each other, which makes their relationship stronger and makes for a better scene onscreen. There's a lot of high school conflicts which make for great television and I thought Shut Up did a refreshingly good job of it, and hope so from School as well.

I can't wait to watch Lee Jong Seok and Kim Woo Bin. Park Se young too, from good performances in Faith and Equator Man.
