Jae Hee is secretly married and a father
by | October 23, 2012 | 115 Comments

And no, I don’t mean that in a drama way. News has come out that Jae Hee is in fact married with a young child, according to a women’s magazine article that seems to have caught the Jae Hee camp by surprise. The article states that he is living a married life though has yet to officially register the union and also has a hidden son.

On the 23rd, Jae Hee’s agency issued a statement in response, saying that because he doesn’t wish to cause trouble for his current drama May Queen, he is addressing the story and moving on so he can focus on his work. His rep confirmed that he is in fact married, but objected to the wording that suggested he was being secretive. Yes, but what fun is it for the tabloids if he’s just being a quiet family man instead of harboring a seedy double life?

The statement asserted that Jae Hee’s relationship is honorable (and registered), and that he did not disclose the news out of consideration for his wife, who is not a celebrity. “He is taken aback that it was reported before he announced it himself, but it is a situation he could confidently reveal.” (Meaning: nothing skeevy going on here, move along folks.) He apparently felt uncomfortable at the idea of his first post-army publicity being about his personal life rather than his work, which is why he chose to keep it quiet.

I’m more surprised that he could have gone this long being a husband and father without the press getting wind of it, but I suppose he’s not really a high-profile star. And since Jae Hee is a stage name (he began acting under his real name, Lee Hyun-kyun, then switched to Jae Hee early on), perhaps he managed to fly under the radar. Aw, but you do have to respect a guy who keeps his private life private and chooses not to turn it into a headline moment. At least not intentionally.

I read this news earlier this morning. He really did manage to stay under the radar, regarding his personal life. Good for him.

      • 1.1.1 pabo ceo reom

Yeah, I was completely taken by surprised. When I read the rumor early on, I instantly dismissed it as being ridiculous…..but who knew?! I have a huge soft spot for Jae-hee from Delightful Girl Chun-hyang, so I am slightly heartbroken (ha!) But I’m glad to hear he’s happy!

        • joybells

I too have been his fan since Delightful Girl Chun-hyang days.I loved his on-screen pairing with Han chae young.I wish they could have dated in reality too.But sigh!!!! both are married now.
Lots of hearty congratulations and good wishes too the couple and hope the tabloids dont give them a hard time.
          N she’ a non-celeb!! 🙂 🙂

    2012 scandal of the year?

    • 2.1 kakashi

well, that cannot seriously be considered a scandal in Korea, can it?! I hope they leave him alone again soon. There’s nothing more normal (and boring) than being married and having a child.

      • 2.1.1 kakashi

… and I mean the “boring” in the best possible ways

      • 2.1.2 Ivoire

And I was going to add, “and you would know :-)”

        • kakashi

          exactly – I talk from experience 🙂

      • 2.1.3 mud

I didn’t mean to say that it is a bad thing… so I suppose I should use the word “surprise” instead. It’s just my brain-washed media mind calling it a “scandal” whenever a celebrity does something ordinary in their private life, but that comes as a surprise to audiences who may usually only see the celebrity as their role in dramas/ movies or some mysterious entity that comes with their status as a celebrity.

      • 2.1.4 flowg

Smart move. Start a family early before getting under the spotlight.
Fans who really cares will understand.
It actually benefits them more since family’s support is very important.

  3. roro

anyway, i'm so happy for him!

  4. Melmax

Congratulations Jae Hee, have a happy, fruitful life… Must be a huge load off his shoulder…. that he is able to be open. Good luck to you and your family… A scandal, surely not.. What a thrill!!! Thanks.

  5. ck1Oz

Yeah, I was waiting for the post to come out here. Because I felt as if I was going to burst.
Congratulations on the family but, but… * OMG * how did he manage to keep a secret for so long. Wow.

  6. midwestmz

Having to live in a fish bowl has to be rather stinky. I applaud him for his concern for his family, which should always come first in my book. My hope, to borrow a line from someone else, is that he can live long and prosper, and his family is his sanctuary and strength.

  7. Dara

Another reason he can’t have Hae-joo cuz my Kang-san (KJW) is still single (right? RIGHT?). Pls finish May Queen before anything, the ratings is getting good, or…. is this Ji-ho revenge schemes, yeah may be Five Fingers gotta do with it haha….

  8. Waca

I’m a bit new to dramaland…so I don’t know who he is, but I do hope the press will let him be. Poor celebrities, can’t they have a private life? So what if the guy is married and didn’t shout it everywhere?
I am actually happy that he’s married to a “normal” person and that they have a kid. I wish them happiness.

Thank you, javabeans, for giving us these news in a neutral tone, and not in a gossip-like way. That’s why I love your dramabeans! 🙂

    • 8.1 birdscout

I agree. It’s really ridiculous that some reporter is trying to paint this as a bad thing.

Best wishes to Jae Hee and family.

      • 8.1.1 befuddled

        I concur with this sentiment.

      • 8.1.2 flog

The old concept of actors/actresses getting married would lose popularity isn’t true anymore. Married life helped them to stay out of troubles. Knowing that they have loved ones, they have better reasons to work hard.

    • 8.2 alualuna

He’s the male lead in Kim Ki-duk’s 3-Iron, in which he was just so awesome. That’s like one of my favourite films ever and Jae Hee’s character I equally adore, so I have a real soft spot for him.

As for the news: good for him – wish him and his family all the happiness the world and I hope the press leaves them in peace. They deserve privacy.

      • 8.2.1 kopytko

Now that you mention 3Iron – it’s a film where he doesn’t utter a single word, although he’s the main character. I guess he learnt something from that role 😉

        • alualuna

Hahaha… very true! Now he just needs to give the press that rebellious look and hold up his palm with the eye to scare them off.

          • flog

Lol…you’ll see that in his role in Jang Ko Jung.haha.
He looks great in that series.

      • 8.2.2 skelly

That was him? I thought that movie was fun and inventive. Good for him for keeping his private life as private as possible. He’s a conscientious husband and father, and so I hope he is successful!

        • alualuna

Yup, that was him. I only made the connection recently as well – i.e. that he starred in some dramas.

      • 8.2.3 Waca

I usually prefer sageuks…but you all got me curious, maybe I’ll have a look at 3-iron! Thx guys!

        • alualuna

It’s an independent, art house movie by the Korea director Kim Ki-duk – who usually makes quite controversial films. His most recent one, Pieta won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival and is Korea’s submission to the Foreign Language Film oscar. Along with Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter…and Spring, 3-Iron is one of Kim Ki-duk’s more reflective and gentle movies. There is still some violence, but very very little really.

          • Waca

Thank you! I don’t know much about Korean Cinema, so thx! I’ll write Kim Ki-duk on my to-watch list. 🙂

  9. jomo

I know I am not the only one who thinks the words:
“married” “child” do not belong in the same sentence as “scandal.”

    • 9.1 Annie

Yep; sometimes you just have to pity celebrities.

  10. 10 aidablue

thumbs up for him for keeping his private life private … well at least until now.

    • 10.1 paper

      Totally agree 😀
I was gonna say~ when is he getting hitched ~ and it has already happened XD I would kill to see his kids pictures D: Babies are so adorable & squishy~<3

  11. 11 Rach^^

    *jaw drops to ground*

    • 11.1 Cam

ME 2 TOOOOO………I am REAAALLY shocked about this news! O_O

CONGRATS to JAE HEE and his new family!!! 😀 😀

  12. 12 houstontwin

Isn’t it great that Jae Hee has a family? Let’s applaud him for making a commitment!

  13. 13 kewbie

I just read that he put out a statement saying that he did register the marriage and the birth of his child. It’s all good.

  14. 14 Saima

oh yeah, this piece of news came out of left-field. Chukhae to Jae Hee & fam!! 😀

It’s kinda swoony that he kept his marital status private to protect his wife from the lime light.

  15. 15 Tha

Awe, my boo is married and a dad…congrats to them. Is it wrong if I want to see pix?!

  16. 16 bluemoon

I am very happy for him and his wife. I, myself, like to keep my private life private too.

While watching May Queen, I couldn’t help but notice that there was something very mature about him compares to his earlier work, now I know that because he has become a father and a husband that’s why he seems more mature.

  17. 17 mjfan

am happy for him , I always respect those who keep their personal life private , so I even love him more now , congrats , jae hee ……

  18. 18 Danna

Awwww….just the fact that there is a baby Jae Hee out there makes me so happy

  19. 19 DTK

I did not recognize him .

  20. 20 kopytko

Poor him! The guy lives a normal life, and yet someone had to turn people’s attention to his family, just because it is his. I hope this is the end of this story – the news is out and the journalists/paparazzi will leave them alone, for lack of other ‘scandalous’ extras.
It’s nothing wrong to want to be acknowleged for one’s work and not for showing off one’s private life. The second one is easier, but also very cheap in my opinion. I hope Jae Hee will continue protecting his privacy and that his agency won’t make him go around showing cute baby pictures.

  21. 21 Birdie

Good for him. I respect him for keeping his personal life private and doing his best to protect his family. Hope after this, the media and public leave them alone.

  22. 22 saltandpepper

Congratulations Jae Hee….i like him so much 🙂
one of my favorites ever since i saw Delightful Girl Choon Hyang 😀

  23. 23 simply_me

It amazes me how certain actions of the press and public can go scot-free under the disguise of the so-called “freedom of speech”, “journalism”, “free press” and whatnot. It really is no one’s business except that of his immediate family and in-laws, if he is married with a child or not, if he registered his marriage and birth of his child or not. Why he has to explain himself to us, I can not begin to figure it out!!! (smh in wonder!)

I think we, the public, have to re-examine the imaginary boundaries we currently have on privacy and personal space, especially with celebrities – they are human beings with a life as well, just like us plain old people. The fact that they chose to be artistes does not give us the right to encroach on their privacy, just like anyone would get hell-raising-mad if their precious privacy/personal space is remotely perceived to be invaded.

I do not see news being given about the shoe repairer* around the corner who lives with a woman that is not his wife but has gazillion kids from said woman and others as well – what? he’s not an actor/artiste/ celebrity/socialite, so it doesn’t matter? The so called moral standard does not apply to him too?

Thanks for the opportunity to vent.
    – end of rant –

*This is a complete figment of my imagination. Any resemblance to any person(s) alive or dead or yet to be born is totally not intended and purely coincidental. And even when coincidental, well, it’s his life not mine, so, no worries.

    • 23.1 kopytko

Thanks for typing. I think exactly the same but after a day of hard work I feel to lazy to write it all down myself 🙂

    • 23.2 mud

      I second your rant =)

    • 23.3 ~Feather~

You echo my thoughts and typed them out perfectly. My hat off to you, my friend! It’s good to know that not everyone feels that famous=not human and without boundaries. thanks for sharing your thoughts! 🙂

    • 23.4 skelly

I third the rant. I don’t want to know what anybody does in their private life, really – the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker, Lee Min Ho, whatever – unless someone else is being harmed by it, I don’t want to know about it and I don’t think anyone else should, either.

Conversely, I don’t think actors should take jobs if their personal life will affect their performance – for example, a spouse has forbidden them from doing any love scenes. It’s a JOB. I don’t want to know about their private life, which means I don’t want to know about how they like to spend Sunday afternoons waltzing in their kitchen, and I also don’t want to be thinking about their demands/inhibitions/political views when I am trying to lose myself in the story.

      • 23.4.1 Mystisith

I think I know which wife you are talking about. 🙂
I agree: I don’t care about their personal life either. Do your job, be happy. That’s enough for me.

    • 23.5 Waca

That was really well-written and totally my thoughts too. Thx for commenting! 🙂

  24. 24 kumi

If he ordained to the monastic order, that would have surprised me.

    • 24.1 Shin

      LOL! Right?!

  25. 25 Jilly

This totally reminds me of “you’re beautiful” and SUFBB. It’s both funny and sad that this stuff happens in real life.

  26. 26 lizzie

People saying how he was able to hide it…

but Lee Jia and Taiji were able to hide it for years, and if they didn’t fight over money nobody would ever know they were married LOL

    • 26.1 canxi

      Fourteen (?) years, too,lol.

I mean I can totally understand him. Look at Lee Min Jung and Lee Byun Hung…people are already showing news segments speculating how their child will look. They’re not pregnant! They’re not married! They aren’t even engaged!

Who wants cameras all up in their wife & child’s face? Nobody.

  27. 27 Abbie

Good for him. It’s good to see that some celebrities are able to separate their personal and professional lives. I’m happy for him!

  28. 28 Darklady7

Good, let us focus on his work. Applause for him for protecting his private life.

  29. 29 Betsy

This is not really anyone’s business but Jae Hee and his family’s. I can see why he didn’t want to announce it publicly after being released from the army since his wife isn’t a celebrity and now he is just trying to protect her and his child from these false rumours.

Why can’t the paparazzi and the public just leave celebs alone. I get that they live these fascinating and exciting lives, but they are also “normal” people who do mundane everyday errands too. I don’t need (or want) to hear about celebs grocery shopping, going to the gym/salon, or what they ordered at Starbucks.

I’m glad Jae Hee is clearing up the rumours, but the press/public shouldn’t chastise him for hiding his relationship. I’m glad he was able to keep his personal life private for so long. Hopefully the press will back off now since he’s given his statement and just let him live his life peacefully.

    • 29.1 canxi

Fan-Syndrome? Everything you don’t report to the media is hiding something from your fans who act like you MUST do everything with them in mind because you “belong to everybody”. <– quotes cuz actually have seen this said.

  30. 30 gusya

Thats so cute! Glad he found somebody to share his life with and probably has a really cute kid too!!! ^__^ Love Jae Hee and support his choice to keep things quiet…he had the right to do that…

  31. 31 ajewell

But – but he was supposed to marry ME!

haha, j/k. This actually made me love him more. You have to respect a guy who puts his family above everything else.

  32. 32 Laurita

I’m also happy that he managed to lead a normal simple family life.

But I don’t think that paparazzi will let them be (even though we might not hear any news for a while) – as far as I can see fans from other sites want to see the baby… It seems to be a desirable bite now… So either he’ll have to make a public photos of all the family or… well… no privacy for a while…

  33. 33 mollyp

    My heart! It breaks. Hai.
Its okay Jae Hee! Ill support you but I will never be able to watch DGCH again without heartache, becauae Mongryong will never be mine. *cries tears of blood*

All joking aside I love Jae Hee and dont give a damn if hes married ir not. Hes still mine. And now ill go eat my body weight in kebabs and cake. Not because im heartbroken or anything. Just because I feel like it. *sniff*

    • 33.1 loveless

      LOL You’re so funny 😀

  34. 34 Quiet Thought

Wow. You don’t have this issue in the United States, where the media market is continental in size and no successful actor is individually important enough to attract intense national gossip. After following Dramabeans for a while, I can certainly appreciate how important it would be in Korea. Anyhow, good for Jae Hee.

    • 34.1 skelly

Oh, I don’t know about that. Ever see how many articles there are about what Suri Cruise is wearing? I feel sorry for that kid on so many levels…so young and already a featured headliner on the National Enquirer. I think the press in this country is just as rabid and intrusive.

      • 34.1.1 Quiet Thought

Okay, I’ll admit I had to Google Suri Cruise to figure out who she was. For the most part, I ignore the gossip magazines and I forget that they are loitering around like skunks in the lilac bushes.

Still, the massive American gossip industry, as near as I can tell from glancing at the tabloid front pages, focuses on a couple of dozen celebrities at a time. Middling stars like Jae Hee, with a few good TV and movie roles to their credits, have no problem disappearing into the vastness of the LA suburbs. No one much cares who they date and marry as long as it doesn’t involve public debauchery or criminal activity. There isn’t much that they can do that would amount to a career-ending scandal.

  35. 35 Carinne

He’s taken!?! Awww, now I have to mend my sis’ broken heart. She watches his every drama. However, I speak on behalf of my sis, we wish Jae Hee and family the best and bond their love stronger through any fortitude.

  36. 36 Nokcha

Respect! I totally dig that he kept his personal life as quiet as it was. Too bad he’s been outed.

  37. 37 Kim Yoonmi

Waa~ Makes me respect him more though my heart twinges a little. Definitely props to him for keeping it secret–his business.

  38. 38 Mai

I totally respect his decision to keep his private life under the radar. I have nothing but Congratulations for him but I feel bad for him that the press had to dig into this situation without him revealing it first later.

Either how, I am happy for him. It just annoys me when they refer to this story as a “scandal” when really the guy is just living his life.

  39. 39 red

Awww I’m so happy for him…and totally enjoying is evil Chang Hee on May Queen!!

  40. 40 Noelle

Well good for him keeping his life to himself. Why does everyone need to know his business anyway? So dumb if they make this a big deal.

  41. 41 Liza

I am the only cynic visiting this blog. I am going to take off the rose-colored glasses for one second and say that celebrities minor or otherwise made a deal with the devil, Money and Fame in exchange for living in a fish bowl. in the west the fans owns the body, in the east they own the celebrity’s body and soul, it is ridiculous how much influenceeastern fans exertson a celebrity’s life. Sometimes, it is in the star’s best interest to keep their personal life private. Privacy has nothing to do with it. If this story been about a ” western ” star, I would have bought the privacy line. ” eastern” star, I do not buy it, I am sure that almost every asian reading this story does not buy it either. Sorry, just put the glasses back on..NO!, something still smells fishy, but then again, it is his business.

    • 41.1 kopytko

You’re not the only one. But my inner cynic shows its teeth when she sees a couple’s wedding pictures delivered to the press and reads some lame squeeks how happy someone is and how good they look together. Or when a starlet buys a fashionable pet to show it of via selcas.

But do you mean all Asian actors are supposed to give in to that idiocy that telling around about their personal lives is? I didn’t quite get your idea. Do you mean Jae Hee kept quiet because he did something wrong? Or that he kept quiet not to confine himself and family in a fish bowl under Big Brother’s surveillance?

  42. 42 Addylovesbwood

I love Jae Hee. I’m totally rooting for him in MayQueen!! #TEAM CHANG HEE!! so buzzzzz off all KANGSAN.. i mean biased Kim Jae Won fans!! lool >>>pls don’t kill me. lol

  43. 43 nozomi05

He is one of those actors that I love.

I fell in love with him in 3-iron. I just love the man’s smirk. 🙂

Anyways, I still love him even if he is married and make me admire him more because he is trying to keep his personal life private. Protecting his wife and family.

Too bad though that he is now officially off the market. More and more of my “age-appropriate” favorite actors are getting married.

Dongsaengs actors are now what I should look out for. heheheh

  44. 44 Katherine

Wishing him & his family nothing but the best.
The magazine tried to make it out as something dodgey with the whole him being secretive. At least have some common courtesy & tell him before hand that you’ll be releasing the news of him being in a relationship/has a son then perhaps they could’ve gotten the exclusive from him – work hand in hand rather than throwing it out there.

(I’ll forever ship him with Han Chae Young: Delight Girl Chun-Hyang FTW !! lol)

  45. 45 Kelinci Biru

Maybe because of the Chun Hyang, and Han Chae Young seems pretty popular in Korea, i always though he has the same range of popularity. That’s why i kinda thought when he got marry, it’ll be a big celebrity wedding. at least like Jeon Ji Hyun, they didn’t have to show the not celebrity-wife/husband but i want to see Jae Hee in wedding tux or wedding hanbok. 🙁

but as a fan, I’m also very happy for him and especially because he can get away from the Korean media.

  46. 46 Ingrid

We really don’t know how many of them are married. Jae Hae
and some of his batch are of marrying age, they just want their personal lives “private”.

  47. 47 Lilian

Total respect for his decision. Paparazzi can be overly troublesome at times.

  48. 48 Dan Dan

Nice Guy has actually taken over my thoughts. When I read that headline, Han Jae Hee immediately popped into my mind. It was quite a hilarious image …

  49. 49 Mia

    Awww congrats! 😀

  50. 50 21

    Very happy for him!!
