Park Ha-sun offered lead in new rom-com

It’s raining dramas lately. Another new project is in the works — a romantic comedy series called Gangnam Style. Whaa? Thankfully, it has nothing to do with the song (because what would that drama be?), but then, that leads to the obvious question: WHY would you call it that? It’s a drama project that’s been in the works for some time, set in the fashion world, and based on the popular webtoon Fashion King… which has nothing to do with the drama Fashion King.

*headrattle* Okay, Show, you’re already confusing the daylights outta me, and you haven’t even started. You’re called Gangnam Style but have nothing to do with horse dancing or Psy, and you’re based on Fashion King the webtoon which has nothing to do with Fashion King the drama. All my ducks in a row?

The leading role has been offered to Park Ha-sun (High Kick: Counterattack of the Short Legs), in what will be her first headlining role in a drama series. Yay for her. I have absolutely no idea what the drama will bring, but I’m excited for how much exposure she’s gotten since High Kick. She was really so lovable and so game for the crazy comedy. Park has played lots of supporting characters in film and tv (and some notable ones like in Dong Yi), but after standing out in the ensemble-cast sitcom, she went on to star in the rom-com movie Tone-Deaf Clinic (due out next month), and now has a lead role in a drama coming her way.

The drama is described as a story about young love and today’s trendiest fashion, which doesn’t actually tell me much. It makes sense that that’s where they got their title Gangnam Style — in reference to the trendy shopping district. It’s just… you do know it means something else now, right? I guess fashion designers are going to be next year’s time travelers, if the trend holds.

On paper the story sounds much like Fashion King — about a young designer trying to become the king of fashion — which would explain why that drama got slapped with accusations of plagiarism early on, for its similarity to the webtoon. On the upside, you can only do better than Fashion King. On the downside, that’s a lot of negative association you’re carrying into the project from the start. Here’s hoping for better things.

Gangnam Style will start shooting in December for a February premiere, and is still looking for a broadcaster.

actually, I have no idea why posters are excited about being the first to post in this site and just post the word "first".

Wouldn't it better to post something relevant to the topic/post or not post at all? That's my opinion.

Thank you so much for addressing this issue~~ I understand that it might be exciting for some people to realize that they're online at the same moment an article is posted, but it was getting a little annoying. It really contributes nothing to the discussion, and it's more of a game tweens at a11kpop can play or something~~

why the fuck would the "first" posts be deleted? are you fking crazy, that's how much internet got under your skin? you reached the point where you actually care about a random person writing "first" on your virtual website? it must be so good being you, if you worry for such little things, then i guess you don't have big things to worry about. people are writing either nasty shit, racist shit , cruel shit, stupid shit, or insulting shit all over the internet, and you're bothered by someone who writes "first".

They're doing the same thing with Full House 2. (that has nothing to do with the original)

anyways, I enjoyed Park Ha-Sun in High Kick 3. She was a likeable and endearing character with good comic timing to boot.

Fyi, the drama's under some heat for the title change (to Gangnam Style), because they didn't bother to consult the creator of the original series (webtoon). Which seems like the kind of thing you'd want to check when you're licensing something to turn into a show. The creator is pi-iiiiissed and considering nulling the contract. Producers have said the title might not be finalized after all, which would be funny in an absurd way. You can't call it Fashion King, you can't call it Gangnam Style... what next? Cinderella Fashion Style King Allo?

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, why wouldn't they have worked together with the creator to change the title of the show? ...It's like the people who create dramas also like to create real life drama...

I wonder if this is some kind of strange marketing strategy to get people to follow the progress that just went wrong, lol.

Superficial Seoul?

Overdressed Unnies?

Frivolous Fashionistas?

. . . Also, when is SOMEONE going to finally do that highly anticipated spin-off from 'My Princess,' the one that needs to be called "Noonas of Darkness"? It would feature all of Dramabeans' favorite evil female second leads from the last few years, in a mass deathmatch over the rights to Dramabeans' favorite flower boys.

I read somewhere that Jang Geun Seuk was offered the main lead, and the management company rejected it. I hope things are looking good for the drama from here on because judging from the title issue and how it is still finding a broadcaster, things are not looking good, at least for now.

Really? Imagine if he did take the role, it's likely that he'd play another character with questionable fashion sense (YAB, LR) given that this is a drama about fashion. I can't remember the last time JGS played a character that dressed like normal people.

the male lead character was supposed to have awful sense of fashion, and in order to win the girl's heart, he did a make over. Make over + JGS = over the top fashion? so yeah, it's a good thing that he rejected the role actually.

Ugh I love her and I so want her to star in a great drama so I hope all this drama title hullabaloo gets cleared up quickly. Better yet, she gets offered a leading role of another drama because I just can't think good things whenever anything is associated with Fashion King (the drama).

I just looked at the photo and immediately thought: We could so put her against Joo Won as a female spy.

Digression? Yes. But I have yet to recover against the shock of Choi Kang Hee against aegyo-boy...

Either way, this better be tonnes better than Fashion King else I'm suing them myself on behalf of Park Ha Sun and all viewers >.<;;

She was actually my top choice for Joo Won's drama because it was only a matter of time before she got a lead role. I have a bad feeling about this drama though - something tells me an idol will get cast as the male lead.

That's exactly what I thought too.

I saw the drama title, clicked on the link, saw how pretty and YOUNG she looked and thought she would've made a bitchin' female lead opposite Joo Won.

Oh wells, there's always hope for future dramas. I really should stop moping.

Anyways, I'm so watching this based on title alone. LOL Gangnam Style the drama.

I'm a big fan of the webtoon and read it weekly and I was really hoping for the drama adaptation to have a similar plot to the actual webtoon- a high school boy discovers fashion and becomes famous and starts liking a girl and goes on some fashion audition program yada yada yada- but the plot's just like fashion king (the drama)
a little disappointed but saw it coming

For a second I thought it was Yoon Eun Hye.

LOL for GS title. I only think about PSY and horse dancing. I thought by now that fire would of burned out but it's still going strong. I mean he was on the View.. Woopi horse danced, people. This shit just got real. So I don't know why they would choose that title unless it was only to get peoples attention.

Whenever I see PSY - I still think P-S-Y and not the way that he pronounces it - sy. Frankly, I would not want to be in a drama called GS. I just think that it takes away from the drama - people will associate it with the song, even if it's not. But then again, yet another fashion drama? I like the thought but have yet to see one that I actually like.

This is K-drama land. If the title doesn't change three or four times, it ain't normal.

By the way, would the Gangnam Style folks also have a say in this?

Gangnam Style plot based on the lyrics of the song...

A girl that likes coffee, plays hard at night and has long hair. She doesn't wear short skirts, etc. So she'd have her hair up during the day and get super drunk at night. (Go to Noraebang). (She could work in a coffee shop)

While a guy pretends to be from Gangnam to impress her--pretending to be a rich Chaebol, but the truth is that he's poor and lying to her about being rich. He does things like show off his friend's airplane. (He's really from Pusan and fell in love with her at the coffee shop.)

The trouble is that she's not into him that much. (And his horse dancing)

So then his rival can be the owner of the Noraebang bar who listens to her troubles every night.

And her rival can be a Chaebol daughter.

Hijinks ensues. Done. I can't imagine that song fitting a melodrama...

....And while she's stone drunk one night in the Norebang bar and is drunkenly pouring out her troubles to the besotted owner, the bar doors swing open and a horse comes galloping in to the beat of "Gangnam Style" and proceeds to dance a strange magnetic horsey dance, hoofs in the air.

Park Shi-hoo's horse from The Princess's Man would be wonderful in this role.
