Park Shi-hoo bares skin for serial killer role

Helloooo, nurse! It seems decidedly wrong that a serial killer ought to look like Park Shi-hoo, but then that’s sort of the slick twist on his new movie. It’s an action crime thriller called I Am a Murderer, about a serial killer who literally gets away with murder… and then outs himself as a bestselling author and true crime celebrity, making him rich and famous for killing people. Jeepers. Jung Jae-young stars as the homicide detective determined to make him pay for his crimes.

The story is pretty awesomely twisted: Park Shi-hoo stars as a killer who successfully evades capture for fifteen years, and then once the statute of limitations passes on his crimes (ten murders in total), he writes a shocking tell-all biography called I Am a Murderer. It makes him famous overnight, and suddenly he’s enjoying life in the lap of luxury (hence the hotel swimming pool and team of hired bodyguards). I just love the sick true-to-life commentary on how being a handsome and well-marketed killer could get him fame and fortune.

Park Shi-hoo is chillingly cunning in the trailer and stills — publicly asking for forgiveness for his crimes like the guilt is what’s driving him, all the while enjoying the notoriety like it’s all a game. Jung Jae-young plays the lead detective on the case, or rather the ex-lead detective, as the case is now dead in the water. He’s the one person who refuses to let it go, and thus begins the game of cat and mouse between the man who got away with the crime of the century and the cop who’s hellbent on getting justice.

What a great setup; I can’t wait to watch mind games unfold. Bring it on. I won’t be fooled by the Pretty!

…I won’t! No really, I won’t! *squeezes eyes shut*

I Am a Murderer hits theaters November 8.

he was awesome in How To Meet Your Perfect Neighbor. I have no plans watching it before because i though he was just the second lead. i don't want to feel the pain watching him cry in the end because he didn't end up with the girl. But then, when i learned that it turned out that he actually stole the girl from Kim Seung Woo, i hurriedly downloaded all the episodes and started watching. It's a good move that the writer decided to change the flow of the story. It made the drama more interesting to watch. :-)

same goes for Queen of Reversals.. :-)

It makes sense though. Quoting wiki, " One reason is that, over time, evidence can be corrupted or disappear, memories fade, crime scenes are changed, and companies dispose of records. The best time to bring a lawsuit is while the evidence is not lost and as close as possible to the alleged illegal behavior. "

0

Required fields are marked *

Not arguing the quote from wiki for it is true. However, my bone of contention is with the loophole that makes a murderer a free man after a period of time because of technicality.
There should be an article that states no matter how long it is once someone is found guilty beyond reasonable doubt he could be prosecuted accordingly. Only then justice could be served.

0

That excuse can't be used nowadays where technologie is widely improved. Think DNA . People never forget such thing as murder and due to the digital world improving, there's always a lot of footage. I mean they even catch child molesters from decades ago...

BTW I thought that I read a while ago that they would scrap that limitation in SK, not sure from when.

0

At the first glance, 15 or 25 years seems long enough for prosecuting, right? But actually there are a lot of cases that need more than that.
For example, if the criminal is a powerful person or powerful organization, the victim's side must wait for a long time until the criminal is not powerful enough to interfere the prosecution.

0

I know Japan changed it's 15 year statue of limitation on murder after a drama that dealt with that. So, if Korea hasn't changed their laws yet, who knows? Maybe this movie will do the trick. (Although, didn't Vampire Prosecutor do an episode where a female murderer didn't get away ....and got arrested in the nick of time before the statute ran out?

We were just discussing this on the Soompi "Five Fingers" forum, where the 15-year statute of limitations is a major portion of the plotline. I quote from one of my international law journals:

"Korea will scrap the statute limiting the time for prosecuting murderers as early as this year [2012] in an effort to better protect the lives of citizens, officials said Thursday. The measure reflects growing public demand that the country abolish the statutes of limitations on premeditated homicide as well as crimes against children. Last year, the country removed such a statute on sexual abuse against disabled people and children under the age of 13.

The Ministry of Justice said it will submit a revised bill that calls for the removal of the statutory period for first-degree murder for National Assembly approval this year. If the bill is passed, it will be retroactively applied to murders committed after 1997.

In 2007, Korea extended the statutory period for crimes that are punishable by the death sentence, including premeditated murder, to 25 years from the previous 15 years. However, civic groups have urged the government to remove it, citing high-profile murder cases that happened long ago, but have remained unresolved." (emphasis mine)

The operative word here is "premeditated" -- the cops would have to prove that a criminal plotted the murder from the get-go. So I do not understand why Raine's Sweetie isn't being prosecuted, as his killings have definitely been proven to be classified as premeditated. But as of 15 October, this new law has yet to be passed and is still swirling around in their legislature. I guess the Korean Government moves as slowly as it does here in the U.S. :(

Wow, I really hope they pass it soon - 15 years especially is an ABSURDLY short time. If it allows for a scenario like the plot of this movie to be remotely plausible, that should be a great big red flag that something is WRONG.

It's not just about punishing past crimes - it's also about protecting everyone else. Who says that a murderer who killed 15 years ago, and was not punished, would have any compunction about doing it again? I mean, come on people, who would it benefit to have such a short statute of limitations?

Apparently Park Shi Hoo the good looking killer with killer body ^-^

I sincerely hope that this movie will be a huge hit and powerful enough to affect how people feel about this statute of limitation after wacthing it.

The statute freaked me out the first time I saw it in a drama. I believe they changed it from 15 to 20 years or was that for a different crime. But still, wow!

I love a good Psychological Thriller. Looks exciting and will definitely check it out.

Unfortunately, some will be fooled by the pretty. Whether in real life or drama/movies, a character should be judged on their actions and not how swoon worthy they are or how adorable they are with another significant other.

so in conclusion, I hope Park Shi-hoo characters fry for the ten murder he did. *cheering for the cop*

I read in earlier announcements of this movie (here on Dramabeans) that the conflict was supposedly:

Now that the ex-killer is famous via book, there are similar murders happening in the present.

The cop must work reluctantly with the ex-killer, under the assumption that these are copycat murders. All the while suspecting that it's still ex-killer all along.

-- Not sure if the plot changed drastically since then.

reply

Required fields are marked *

Like other crime thrillers, I'm thinking there is a copy-cat killer, but it does not rule out that the "ex-killer" was actually responsible for at least one or more of the new killing. Thus, giving us a chance for a long over due justice.
