Third tvN Flower Boy drama stars Yoon Shi-yoon, Park Shin-hye

Dude. DUDE! I’m not going to jump the gun and say this show is going to be awesome… but it’s going to be awesome, right?

The time has come for a third installment in the “Flower Boy” series, and this one is titled Flower Boy Next Door. I love that, inasmuch as I love all cute plays on words. The producers have scored two big names for this one: Yoon Shi-yoon and Park Shin-hye. Huzzah! Two young talents with acting skills to match their pretty faces.

Cable channel tvN has scored twice thus far with its “Oh Boy” series of programming. Oh Boy was a project that kicked off last year to target the young teenage demographic (which doesn’t always command the big broadcast audiences—the prime-time dramas on the Big Three stations mostly target 20-something and 30-something audiences, as well as the ajumma viewer base). It kicked off with Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, then aired a reality audition show to cast a supporting role in the follow-up drama. Straight from the auditions did Yoo Min-kyu go to Shut Up: Flower Boy Band, where he played bassist Ha-jin.

Both Flower Boy dramas have been ratings successes and became buzz shows, and both definitely scored with me—they were vastly different despite the Flower Boy in their titles, but spoke to me for different reasons. Ramyun Shop was zany and comedic in the best of ways, while Shut Up just spoke to my heart. The reason both worked—despite the admittedly gimmicky premise—is that even though they’ve got the trappings of fluff teen fare (and the marketing, branding, and pretty faces), neither drama forgot to have a story and a spirit, and contained tons of warmth and soul.

Thus I’m hoping third time is also a charm, and am optimistic that this one will also have a solid story to carry the drama. It’s based on an existing webtoon called I Steal Peeks At Him Every Day. It’s an upbeat, lively story that centers around an “urban Rapunzel” type character, played by Park Shin-hye, who is locked up in her lonely tower. Figuratively speaking—at least I hope. She sneaks peeks at her neighbor across the street, and gets caught by a different guy, played by Yoon Shi-yoon. Sold and sold. I’m hooked already.

These names crack me up; Park plays Go Dok-mi, which is a play on the word for lonely (go-dok). Yoon’s flower boy character is named Enrique Geum. Okay, there’s nothing inherently funny about his name, but the juxtaposition amuses me. Enrique is a fashionable creative director with charm out the wazoo and “superior genes.” Heh.

I’m super excited about this pairing, because I love both actors but not always all their roles, and this one sounds like it’ll be great for both of them. I’m crossing fingers and toes that they have chemistry, because they sure have the comedic and dramatic chops. I really enjoyed Yoon Shi-yoon in his last drama, Me Too, Flower, and he was good in it—but that drama nosedived and I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was terribly miscast. Park, too, has had some winners and also some… not-so-winners. So I’m hoping this one succeeds.

Plus! PD Jung Jung-hwa is back in the game, after having directed Flower Boy Ramyun Shop. Screenwriter Kim Eun-jung is penning the scripts; her film credits include Coffee (Gabi) and Hwang Jini (the 2007 movie).

Just like the first two series, Flower Boy Next Door one will be a Monday-Tuesday romantic comedy running for 16 episodes. It premieres on January 7, 2013. *circles date in red ink* *decorates with flowers and hearts*

Hmm.. I've only seen PSH in Heartstrings, and couldn't finish it. YSY, I've only seen a few episodes of Me too, Flower. So I'm just thinking that I happen to catch both their not as good dramas. Let's hope this one will work out!

When 2 known primetime miniseries leads gets transferred to cable drama that means their career is doing bad.

Only exception is if top stars like jang dong gun and kim ha neul accept cable offer cause then that means they got paid a lot.

Park shin Hye has done nothing but teenybopper roles for how many consective dramas, which have been failures. I was really hoping that she would go back to her old days, where she picked projects that have depth. I knew that after consecutive failed projects they would put her on cable that's how it works in Korea. I thought she would have learned her lesson by now.

Same thing as Yoon Si Yoon, after baker king, he's just been floundering. It's a huge slap in the face to have starred in a big rating drama like Baker King, and now they transfer him to cable after failing in Me Too Flower, while his second lead in Bake King's Joo Won is doing so well as a lead in primetime dramas on regular networks.

Your vision of cable is outdated. It was valid a few years ago but not anymore. The dramas on cable have less audience but a faithful one and the critics agree on the quality of the scripts. tvN which is part of CJent has announced recently they won loads of money with their recent dramas. Their stories are fresh and innovative.
I would take a good drama on cable over a crappy one on the Big 3 anytime and actors/writers are beginning to realize it too.

And cable has been doing fairly well critically: A Wife's Credentials, Queen In Soo, I Live in Chungdam-dong, Padam Padam, Reply 1997, the Flower Boy series. I mean, that's some pretty heavy lifting. I think Channel A is the only one that hasn't put out incredible programming.

A Wife's Credentials is one of the best dramas I've ever seen. Cable has been really bringing it to the Big 3 these past few years.

there have been lots of big name and veteran stars who did cable shows (Chae Sira, Lee Tae Ran, etc... and oh there's Jung Woo Sung too) and i doubt their career is doing 'bad', so i don't know how you ended up with that conclusion ._. plus the tv landscape has been shifting this year; cable dramas that generated buzz earned their actors some recognition and fame.

lol accept not really
TVN have done a lot of good dramas and get sold a lot this year( some dramas got sold in 20 countries). And don't underestimate the power of Park Shin Hye's fans.
The both previous dramas PSH have done is because they are idol dramas but I don't think it the case this time
We will need to see after we see it

I don't think Shinhye's career is doing bad, she may not have any regular drama this year but do you really think she didn't have offers. She's one celebrity who gives her studies so much importance and I think this is one reason why she didn't accept a drama series this year plus the fact that she has lots of out of the country events to attend to. She did a special drama and a movie (which is still to be shown) and just finished the Heartstrings FM with JYH and the most recent the Okinawa Kpop Festival where is was an MC. Is this someone whose career is doing bad? Isn't her schedule so hectic. I find her so amazing.

Also, TVN is doing so well these days and their stories are great, enough to give the Big 3 competition. Eventually, this cable channel will catch up but I hope they will retain their good stories.

I think PSH is a bit... overrrated?

Don't get me wrong. She is a okay actress, but nothing really wow to talk about.

I watched YAB, Tried You've fallen for me, Tree of Heaven...

and I think she was okay but at the same time I never saw her improving. Her acting is always the same.

And she has this habit of pouting all the time too.

The only drama I really liked her was in the special ''don't worry I'm a ghost'' I think she did well, didn't pout all the time and didn't Overacted too much.

Is only me? Don't worry I know she is a sweet and hardwoking girl in real life and dances well too, but her onscreen isn't that good....

Sure all the girls must be overated when there are many people like them, and it's perfectly OK for the guys
It's how Kpop works right?

Whaaat? Girl you judged me from one comment like this?

lol Of course guys are overated. Like for example Lee Min Ho, the guy is just okay at acting but receives so much praise from his fangirls...

Kim Soo Hyun was good at Moon/Sun but didn't deserve such huge award when there were better actors competing with him.

I don't care about Kpop.

You say ''It's called opinions. But you then talk as if I can't have this opinion and judge me as a blind fangirl of a kpop idol guy.

You are being butthurt.

Girl, I'm not judging you, I was just saying the fact that most guys can get away with everything and girls cant, in dramaland or Kpop... Girls always have it harder... There a few Shinhye's haters in the last couples... to prove that fact.
She is loved internationally but not really that big in Korea
So I think it's unappropriated to call her "overrated"
And chill!
It's your opinion, and we have ours

With the right director, she can be really good - as long as she is restrained a bit.

I just wished she picked a different role, she always pick the same kind of roles.

Have you tried her last movie Cyrano agency?
Since she is still in college so she doesn't do much in the recent years, like 1 drama/ year and another movie the next year. And she has many under her belt for a 22-yr-old girl :)
She got award for Stairway to heaven, which is her first ever role and in Kimchee Radish Cubes as well, where she was pair with a guy who is 12 yrs older.
She might not be the best actress and have a lot of room to improve but she certainly have amazing chemistry with all the guys she has worked with ( you have watch you're beautiful and she was great with 3 of them at the same time). Plus she is the sweetest girl who all her co-stars adore and become her friends afterward. Plus girl can sing dance very well too... it's hard to find a well-grounded artist like her
Her new movie Dec 23 will come out in a few months as well, so look forward to it

I guess I would say in all her dramas there are moments where she has been very touching and effective and you think, "Wow! You DON'T really have to have that dumb look on your face all the time."

So you wonder why the director WANTS her to play the character goofy and one-note and inept when she is capable of so much more.

SOOO AWKWARD!!! It hurts me to see these lead actress acting like they don't know what a real kiss is. I know they are innocent girl around, but my gosh not that many. They are practically in every drama. Both her and Koo Hye-Seon needs A LOT of work when it comes to romance scenes. I always feeling disgusted because they make it seems like I'll watching some wrong by the expression that have when they are being kiss. Every time I find myself screaming, Girl he is HOT!! enjoy while you can, but sadly they don't enjoy it.

I haven't seen her other co-stars in anything else, so I can't judge their kissing scenes; but I agree that in the two series I've seen her in, all of her kissing scenes are the standard freeze-frame, lips-pressed together, simple kisses. Very awkward. HOWEVER, I saw the kisses in Me Too Flower and Yoon Shi Yoon owns those. So maybe he'll be able to make up for Park Shin Hye's awkwardness or bring out a feistier side in her. THAT would be awesome!

I love Park Shin Hye mostly for her charm and acting because I didn't really care for either of her two roles in You're Beautiful or You've Fallen For Me, even though she did great. Funny how that works.

*Crosses fingers* Maybe a combination of cable television and Yoon Shi Yoon will mean hot kissing scenes and show us a whole new side of Park Shin Hye?

There is light at the end of my drama tunnel, thank goodness.

I LOVE LOVE this kid. I might be the only one that actually really liked Me Too Flower, I almost feel it is under rated, loved the coverage of depression and other themes, loved the characters, well, except for the scary ass noona, biotch was cra cra, she was Dragon Lady Kang from BOF in the making. Shudder. And how can you not appreciate a kid that will start stripping his scrawny chicken chest body down in a police department all up on his crush like he's got Bi Rain's body and swag, omg that was frigging hilarious.

PSH, I think she's adorable but I am really hoping we can bypass the You're Beautiful and Heartstrings type of character and have a more adult and cool character like in Cyrano, but that is probably too much to ask. If we can avoid the bulging eyeball kiss, that would probably satisfy me but that too is probably a pipe dream.

I have hope with this show, as FBRS, for all its crazy and seeming fluff, really had some layers, and I'm hoping PSH's character will be doing the rescuing, ala Yang Eun-bi.

I've only seen Yoon Shi Yoon in Me Too, Flower; and while that series tanked, Yoon Shi Yoon still managed to hold it together as well as the writing allowed him to and he was awesome. And Park Shin Hye... I've been amazed by how charming she is since I saw both You're Beautiful and Heartstrings.

I have conflicting feelings about Heartstrings... and it holds a special place in my heart mostly because it was one of the first few K-drama series I watched. I liked the concept of Heartstrings, I liked where the story was headed, but I didn't like how the last half of it ended up concluding. I feel like things lost steam after the mid-way point, but I still enjoyed the series a lot because I'm really big on youth drama and light-hearted romances.

That and I suffered the second-lead syndrome after watching You're Beautiful and so was aching for some good chemistry between Jung Yong Hwa and Park Shin Hye when Heartstrings came around. At the very least, those two make a really awesome onscreen couple.

I adore Yoon Shi Yoon (he pretty much has my eternal love from starring in Baker King, one of my all-time favorites despite its flaws) and although PSH's character in You're Beautiful annoyed me a lot at times, I do think she's a good actress and so cute too.

looking forward to this drama, and i'm so happy that dramabeans highlighted it in red with flowers and hearts - meaning to say, she will recap it...sooooooooooooo excited......

Loved the 2 previous Flower Boys dramas.

I think the pairing of PSH and YSY is cute, but can't imagine them in romantic scenes together kissing. Awkward mental pictures...

I enjoyed YSY in Baker King, but his role in M2F was strangely miscast. Although PSH was great in YAB, Heartstrings was a bore.

Hopefully, the webtoon sounds cute and interesting, so I hope this third series is a winner for both of them. It's been quite a while so I 'm glad they're both back together in a new comedy!
