Third tvN Flower Boy drama stars Yoon Shi-yoon, Park Shin-hye

Dude. DUDE! I’m not going to jump the gun and say this show is going to be awesome… but it’s going to be awesome, right?

The time has come for a third installment in the “Flower Boy” series, and this one is titled Flower Boy Next Door. I love that, inasmuch as I love all cute plays on words. The producers have scored two big names for this one: Yoon Shi-yoon and Park Shin-hye. Huzzah! Two young talents with acting skills to match their pretty faces.

Cable channel tvN has scored twice thus far with its “Oh Boy” series of programming. Oh Boy was a project that kicked off last year to target the young teenage demographic (which doesn’t always command the big broadcast audiences—the prime-time dramas on the Big Three stations mostly target 20-something and 30-something audiences, as well as the ajumma viewer base). It kicked off with Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, then aired a reality audition show to cast a supporting role in the follow-up drama. Straight from the auditions did Yoo Min-kyu go to Shut Up: Flower Boy Band, where he played bassist Ha-jin.

Both Flower Boy dramas have been ratings successes and became buzz shows, and both definitely scored with me—they were vastly different despite the Flower Boy in their titles, but spoke to me for different reasons. Ramyun Shop was zany and comedic in the best of ways, while Shut Up just spoke to my heart. The reason both worked—despite the admittedly gimmicky premise—is that even though they’ve got the trappings of fluff teen fare (and the marketing, branding, and pretty faces), neither drama forgot to have a story and a spirit, and contained tons of warmth and soul.

Thus I’m hoping third time is also a charm, and am optimistic that this one will also have a solid story to carry the drama. It’s based on an existing webtoon called I Steal Peeks At Him Every Day. It’s an upbeat, lively story that centers around an “urban Rapunzel” type character, played by Park Shin-hye, who is locked up in her lonely tower. Figuratively speaking—at least I hope. She sneaks peeks at her neighbor across the street, and gets caught by a different guy, played by Yoon Shi-yoon. Sold and sold. I’m hooked already.

These names crack me up; Park plays Go Dok-mi, which is a play on the word for lonely (go-dok). Yoon’s flower boy character is named Enrique Geum. Okay, there’s nothing inherently funny about his name, but the juxtaposition amuses me. Enrique is a fashionable creative director with charm out the wazoo and “superior genes.” Heh.

I’m super excited about this pairing, because I love both actors but not always all their roles, and this one sounds like it’ll be great for both of them. I’m crossing fingers and toes that they have chemistry, because they sure have the comedic and dramatic chops. I really enjoyed Yoon Shi-yoon in his last drama, Me Too, Flower, and he was good in it—but that drama nosedived and I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was terribly miscast. Park, too, has had some winners and also some… not-so-winners. So I’m hoping this one succeeds.

Plus! PD Jung Jung-hwa is back in the game, after having directed Flower Boy Ramyun Shop. Screenwriter Kim Eun-jung is penning the scripts; her film credits include Coffee (Gabi) and Hwang Jini (the 2007 movie).

Just like the first two series, Flower Boy Next Door one will be a Monday-Tuesday romantic comedy running for 16 episodes. It premieres on January 7, 2013. *circles date in red ink* *decorates with flowers and hearts*

at least YSY don't have to pretend an "adult" role over his age... he deserves to have a BIG BIG break being a wonderful actor... one underrated actor but still I am giving HIGH hopes for him..

and to PSH I know she's also good and I don't have worries for her ability..

I WILL DEFINITELY WATCH THIS ONE!!! <3

I love the premise! I hope they have chemistry! (And it doesn't hurt that the pair is easy on the eyes.)

I'm happy he won't be working with an ajhumma as I've come to expect but something about this pairing doesn't seem quite right to me. I think PSY looks best with really masculine actors and YSY is a little too 'flower boy' to me. I liked her best with Joo Sang Wook even though he is much older than her.

It's good to see actors not cast with noonas and ahjummas as has been the case recently. I do agree that someone more manly would have looked better with PSH or someone delicate for YSY. But, PSH has always had amazing chemistry with all her male leads therefore I have hope that it will continue in this drama too

O M G YESSSS YOON SHI YOON!!! He is such a talented actor and it certainly doesn't hurt that he is so good looking! :) And tvN!!! I think they have established a brand name for themselves; at least when I personally think of tvN, the first word that pops up in my mind is 'quality'. Well, YSY + tvN = WIN! :D As for Park Shin Hye, I am generally neutral towards her, because none of her previous works made me like her more than before. Anyway I am definitely eagerly anticipating this drama! :D

Not a big fan of the male lead, but I love Park Shin Hye. She won me over with her performance in Heaven's Tree and I've loved her since then. Sadly, I haven't been able to really get into any of her dramas after that. I'm hoping this one changes that. Fingers and toes crossed!

Javebeans,

I was already excited for this and your written enthusiasm had me squee'ing. Although PSH's roles haven't always been great, her on screen appeal grows with every appearance. I'm sooooo stoked. I really loved the quality of the first two flower boy dramas. Imma have to watch the other two first to get into the mood. Great, more drama'ing...I'm not REALLY complaining, y'know.

I've read the webtoon before! Siyoon is perfect as KkeGeum. I wonder who's going to act as Han Taejun(Dokmi's crush) and the other girl(dwenjang girl lol) whoever is Taejun has to be the handsome charming neighbor that Dokmi spies on. If they follow the webtoon closely, does that mean that Siyoon is going to be calling Shinhye an Ahjumma? Lol that's hilarious because he's older irl

I also wonder if theyre going to do anything drastic to Siyoon's hair. In the webtoon, it's blonde and pretty :O Anyways, I'm glad this webtoon is being picked up as a drama because kdramas seldom have these types of characters as the main lead. (Cute, happy-go-lucky, outrageous guy). Usually it's the cold but warm hearted guy that is usually the lead, which is so cliche.

I literally spent all day yesterday watching Me Too Flower (I am not kidding, 15+ straight hours) to prepare myself for this show. I had never seen Yoon Shi Yoon act before, and people loved him so much in Baker King (Which I just could not get into); So I watched him in MTF..... I have a new love! I cannot wait to see him in this drama.

The date is circled on my new calendar!

Finally! PSH in a tv drama. Cannot have enough of watching her. Wanted to see her with LSG ......they are really perfect in every project together. But, then she has always looked good with everyone.....BSH, lee wan, JGS, JYH, BTG, LSG etc. People really seem to like YSY so I hope I will also once I actually see him in the drama.

I am SO looking forward to this drama! He was amazing to watch in M2F, even though the story fell apart. He's also one hell of a pretty face with talent to match.

I have to admit, I'm not a huge fan of PSH, but I can't argue the girl has talent. I loved her in You're Beautiful and Heartstrings.

Mainly, I can't wait for another Flower Boy series, the other two are in my top ten!

It was a well-scripted, well-acted, directed and touching drama with an unusual storyline. Worth watching. Nothing creepy about it at all. Good balance of light and sad moments.
