Alice in Cheongdam-dong’s first teaser

It doesn’t tell us anything about the story, but the first preview clip for SBS’s Alice in Cheongdam-dong lays out the light, romantic, fantasy ambiance to the weekend rom-com series.

Described as centering around the ordinary heroine’s “project to make herself into a Cheongdam-dong daughter-in-law” (ugh; sorry, that description just keeps turning me off), the drama’s teaser uses a decidedly fairy-tale-esque vibe to convey its fairy-tale-esque setup. Moon Geun-young (Mary Stayed Out All Night) is our heroine, while her chaebol prince is played by Park Shi-hoo. I love them both, but I find myself a little creeped out by the watercolor drawings; anyone else think he has Furby eyes?

I’ll be honest; if it were anybody else in these lead roles I probably wouldn’t pay this drama any notice. It’s a weekend miniseries so it probably won’t be attempting anything innovative or new, though at a brisk 16 episodes it could be a nice, sweet show to liven up the tears and gloom permeating dramaland these days. Seriously, it’s a melodrama-rama.

I really do hope hope that despite the very dated-sounding premise, the show has got an interesting take on the whole “marriage project” idea. Otherwise why bother casting such fantastic leads for such a cookie-cutter old-school story, right? RIGHT?

Also in the cast are Kim Ji-suk (I Need Romance 2012), So Yi-hyun (You’ve Fallen For Me), and Shin So-yool (Answer Me, 1997). The show premieres on December 1, following Five Fingers.

I believe there's more behind it. I am hopeful.

I hope they will release another teaser soon! :-)

I would have preferred to have Kim Ji Suk in the lead role. And when is anyone reviewing I NEED ROMANCE 2012? That drama is worth more than the others recapped here (my opinion only, of course).

Haha, after all the heavy dramas that I have been watching like Nice Guy and Five Fingers, I seriously need a break.

I like the cast, the premise sounds cute enough, and I want some laughter. Bring it on!

Don't count on it, after all it's weekend drama. Overall, this is for those who like weekend dramas (with the same cliches - a rich man, a poor girl. Blah blah) and for PSH and MGY's devout fans.

It's such a shame that MGY has been doing such crappy dramas lately. This one seems cute but I really want to see her in something that really shows how awesome she is!

She was amazing in Cinderella's Sister and then Mary Stayed Out All Night came out, now this. SOMEONE JUST PUT HER IN AN AWESOME DRAMA!

I think if you want a light drama, check out can we get married. The cast has 2 guys from white christmas. I love the show, it has both comedy and proper drama. I thought their acting was quite good. Otherwise you should just watch Park Ki Woong in Full House Take 2 :)

I wish they would re cap Can We get married... its actually an interesting show

I'm very much underwhelmed by that project: Outdated, recycled... Not very exciting.
Furthermore, it starts in 2 weeks and all we got is a teaser composed of 5 frames put together? Quite cheap.
On the other side, I like PSH and I miss a good rom-com... So what to do? I will keep my expectations very low. Maybe we will have a good surprise.

Isn't this story a bit new for romcoms in kdrama land?

The heroine is trying to project a Candy-type personality in order to get married when (I assume) her real personality is kinda manipulative.

Like a mini-Lee Mi Sook when she was seducing Kim Gab Soo in Cinderella's Sister.

Usually these type of role is for evil female second leads so I'm curious how MGY is going to portray this without losing the viewer's sympathy. Specially if she's going to play with Park Shi Hoo's heart. That's minus 50% sympathy right off the bat.

Required fields are marked *

That's only assuming if she's manipulative and her Candy persona is fake. She could be a true Candy girl with dreams of being a rich daughter-in-law.

I mean, if you see a guy who meats all your ideal standards and try to do your best to get him to like you, is that manipulative?

That would be nice twist on the mostly cookie-cutter, one size fits all of k-drama heroine. Variety is always good in my books, if done right.

regarding your last paragraph concerning viewer's sympathy,
I think, if written and acted well, viewer's will still be sympathetic to an anti-hero(ione). I remember many still had sympathy for Jang Miri a la Miss Ripley (and she was practically in a full villain role). I remember Choi Hang-woo a la History of the Salaryman, people was still swooning, despite plenty of villain activities and attitude. There are more examples, but my point is a show does not always have to give us a Candy-heroine in order for us to like her. Also, people have SO MANY variety of personalities, why is k-drama showing only a few.

Love MGY's character in Cinderella Sister (I'm a sucker for a tough, cool heroine with brain) but I don't think this one is going that way.

Just look at those pictures. Sugary sweet. The storyline doesn't really sell it for me. But again, we don't know how they are going to execute it. How she's going to project her character.

Anyway because of the leads and I always prefer the happy dramas to the doom and glooms ones I'm going to watch this one.

They are extremely stingy on the details, aren't they?
So far, the only real promotion material is the 147 year old story of "Alice`s Adventures In Wonderland" (first pub.1865) The title, the poster, the teaser, they are relying on the well known classic to do all the marketing. (besides the cast themselves)

As I have said before, I will come for the pairing, but I will only stay for the show. These two leads have earned my respect enough for me to check out the first episode or two. I have no problem abandoning a show if it turns out boring, bad, or other reasons.

I do not believe in the concept of "It's-so-bad-it's-awesome", to me, if it's so bad, then duh it's just bad. period. I also don't have the k-drama villain logic of "I've gone too far, I can't stop now" my darling biased actors and actresses, I will still drop you like a hot potato if, Show, shows even small signs of going Dr.Jin,FK,DH2,Marry, on me.

All that being said, I really want this show to be good for the leads. good luck team. *Hwaiting*

Kind of off-topic but speaking of marriage, is anyone watching the show "Can we get married" starring jung somin and bang sungjoon? Pretty cute show imo.

Aaanyway, i want to trust the leads decision in taking part in this drama. I've always suspected that moon geun young read the premise of MSOAN thinking it such a fresh take on the marriage contract trope only to get screwed over by the writers in the end. SO, maybe she read the script for this one and its actually better than the drama plot descriptions we're getting. Although this is still not on my list of anticipated shows what with jeon woo chi, flower boy next door, and joowons new drama(forgot the name) coming up.

Like it doesn't sound substantial and they better write a female character that I can respect.
Also considering we still don't have the license for the drama on viki, don't want to be involved in another MSOAN channel.
Please, please... make this story to be way better than the teaser and the tagline. Because we have seen how teasers can be misleading. Take Nice Guy for instance. It's turned out to be so much better than anticipated.

Lol, this teaser was so bad. And I feel like it made Park Shi Hoo's head look huge! Hahaha, but I wanna watch this drama. I, too, wish that Kim Ji Suk was the main lead like some one else said. I really do think it's time for him to get the spotlight and the girl!

I feel like there is more to the story, too, for some reason. I feel like the synopsis they have given is missing a key part--like something that makes the heroine's action make sense. I don't think it was just because she was unsatisfied with working/being a lackey under her ex-classmate. Or, I hope anyway.

Ok so I mentioned this in the last Alice post, but I am having some doubts on whether Park Shi Hoo will be in this drama. Or whether this drama is real in the first place. This "teaser" did not assuage those doubts.

Think about it, no stills of him shooting this drama have been released. And this "teaser" is just a montage of really weird overly photoshopped pictures of the "cast" superimposed together.

My theory is that the photos are rejects from a old PSH photo shoot that were rejected due to not accurately capturing the hotness and charisma that is PSH.

Maybe they plan to use a cardboard cut out of Park Shi hoo and the only picture they could find was from his Perfect Neighbor awkward style phase.

Maybe i am reaching but so many things about this drama (like the plot) just don't make sense. I still have faith in PSH's ability to choose (Loved him in Queen of Reversals and that totally came out of left field).

Or this is just all a elaborate plot to mess with our minds and this drama will be Awesome. OH PSH you charming devil, you! (I am going to go with that theory!)

I started watching FH2 for some fluff but I stopped at episode four (only because I became addicted to Reply 1997 and decided to rewatch FBRS (omg Il-woo, I love you). I can see how this could be a fluff piece, but I have a dreadful feeling about it.

"furby eyes" I don't even know what that means but ROFL!!!!
I know it's early but I'm already getting bad vibes from this show, which I hate because I like both actors and want to watch them in something GOOD! I don't know... it kind of feels like MSOAN all over again, where I'm excited about the cast but not the plot and every teaser that comes out deflates my excitement, and then... the show turns out to be a big disappointment. But I hope that isn't the case here.

I think that the reason why Moon Geun Young picked this drama is because of Kim Ji-Won, a screenwriter she has worked with before in the film “A Tale of Two Sisters”. It says in wiki that this film is “both the highest-grossing Korean horror film and the first to be screened in American theatres” with great success. Maybe she wanted to work with that screenwriter again, because she figured that any drama he wrote or takes part in will be a good one? Thing is that Kim Jin-Hee is also another screenwriter in this drama and I couldn't find even one film or drama he has wrote a script for. Could this drama will be like Faith, in which the Director let his protege take charge and slapped his name on it—only in this case it will be screenwriters? Or maybe this drama is purposefully trying to fool us into thinking it will a normal, cliche-ridden drama with a light-hearted, sugar-coated romantic
comedy feel, but then provides a shocking twist that tears apart our expectations, in the style reminiscent of the anime “Puella Magi Madoka Magica”? To those curious, view the anime's opening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMI3rY2hvAU Compare to amv which has clips of anime: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61qXcPjs5So&feature=related

While I'm not putting much hope in the last option, I do hope that the drama ends up having more substance and plot than the teaser and descriptions are showing.

Sadly, most actors and actresses don't really choose the dramas they play in. Well, maybe the 5 most famous ones of each gender can afford that luxury. For the others, they feel lucky if they can enter the casting process. And being offered a part so they can pay the bills is a miracle. So much competition...

I have learned to never judge a K drama too much by it's promos or even cover shots, opening sequences, because they often do not jive with the show. Okay, well, Vampire Prosecutor is an exception lol. Do you know how much wacky fun looking stuff I got suckered by when I was a newbie that turned out to be melo horrifying die of cancer stuff?

I'd be in on this for the actress, out of it for the plot as it's described, and out of it on PSH, he's just not my cup of tea, so no one stab me, lol, I'm not crit-ing him. So, that's two strikes already, and frankly despite my rule of not judging a drama by its promo stuff alone, the the hair IS a little frightening, and that's saying a lot from someone who LIKED Gu Jun Pyo's hair. I'll paraphrase/channel Bridget Jones here and advise PSH, "You should seriously reconsider the size of your pompadour." Then again, I might have to watch and episode FOR the hair.
