Stills and behind-the-scenes shots from School 2013

KBS’s new series School 2013 is just around the corner, with Oohlala Spouses out and the Monday-Tuesday slot ready for its baton pass. I feel like I’ve said just about all I have to say on this drama, so let’s just review the finer points:

It’s got two writers and two directors on its team: the writers mostly have Drama Specials on their resumés, as well as MBC’s 2011 Late Night Hospital; between them the two PDs have Dream High, Hometown of Legends, Hello Miss, Reputable Family, Delightful Girl Chun-hyang, Sangdoo Let’s Go to School, and the original 1999 School on their collective record.

The drama focuses on a class of second-years in high school (so, the equivalent of junior year) and is emphasizing its sense of “fierce realism.” I’m am really looking forward to that — a less glossy look at adolescence than many shows give us, with lots of emotion and moments of growth. It also has the potential to turn into an issue-maker, addressing challenges facing today’s students like bullying, violence, suicide, and so forth. According to its PD, they’re striving for the utmost realism with the real-life high school experience, and have populated their cast with a diverse mix of students.

That gives us Lee Jong-seok as the ordinary guy with no ambitions whose wishes for a calm life get disturbed with unexpected events. There’s Kim Woo-bin as the troubled transfer student, and Park Se-young as the model student who doesn’t really have her own goals.

They’ve got a lot to live up to, given the stars that studded the original series (who were rookies at the time) like Im Soo-jung, Choi Kang-hee, and Jang Hyuk, though they’re also mindful of making their roles their own. Lee Jong-seok said, “My character could be similar to Jang Hyuk sunbae-nim’s character, but our images are different and I’m trying to express the role a little differently.”

A key point in the series will be the relationships between the students and the adults, and playing two teachers are Jang Nara and Daniel Choi. As we saw in the teasers, these teachers struggle to keep their classes in line, depicting a reality of modern schools where the teachers have lost a lot of their former authority. Should make for some interesting conflict between the kids and the adults.

School 2013 premieres next Monday.

That group photo of the entire cast psyches me up for this series. I hope the drama lives up to all the realism it's promoting. Love all it's leads. See you guys Monday!

I'm so looking forward to watching this! The still all looks like they're having so much fun :) with some great high school based dramas out there, like Dream High (definitely not Dream High 2 *shudder*) and Reply 1997, this show has many expectations to live up to.

Okay, is it just me or OMG Park Se-young look like she lost 10 years compared to her character in Faith?

I was like Faith, Faith... Wait, The Queen! Wow: Replace the royal garb by a student's uniform and the sophisticated hairdo by the simplest one and voila. I love actors/actresses who are chameleons.

Yes, she looks way younger.. even compare to Love Rain days..

Park Se Young plays different characters this year, from EM as young Soo Mi, Love Rain as spoiled-bratty lil' sister cum famous model, Faith as Queen Noguk, and now this. She is on the rise.. and she surely is a chameleon.

fierce realism? sounds good to me.

The information I have about this franchise sounds positive, and considering there was four seasons before this one, they definitely must of done something right. I'm certainly open to test out something new, and a little bonus, I wouldn't mind seeing Jang Nara and Daniel choi together onscreen again. They had cute chemistry in Babyface Beauty.

if anyone would like to see the first episode trailer

Maybe not, maybe we're so used to photoshopped legs that we can't see normal legs on photos as normal :D

I'm so excited for this I can't even waittt. I'm a sucker for school dramas and eye candy haha. But they all look like they're having fun, so I hope that comfortable atmosphere translates to the actual drama. Is it just me or in the group photo is that Bong-gu from God of Study (don't know his real name sorry D:)?

Sounds like Biscuit Teacher and Cotton Candy, although the main romance here is between teachers (unlike BT&CC where it was between a student and a young teacher).

I wonder if, like BT&CC, it will be episodic, with each episode or more focusing on the struggle of each student and the main romance tying them all up.

Between this and My Flower Boy Neighbour, it looks ike the 2013 crop of dramas is getting off to a good start (like 2012). Yay!

I hope they stay true to their word about making this as realistic as possible. I understand there will be a good amount of watering down, but as long as they don't start focusing all their energy on solely romance (esp the drama kind aka UNREALISTIC) due to ratings and whatnot then yea. I love school-themed dramas, and can't wait for this!

Woo, looks exciting! I was sad that Lee Yubi is not in it, but now I'm really anticipating this show! Can't wait to see Kim Woo Bin and Hyoyoung's performances :) Hyoyoung looks so bright and spunky with that short hair! And Lee Jong Suk is looking quite fine too. And I guess I'm very okay with Park Se Young...so yayyy :D

well everyone seems to be getting on board..with poster being sent out to schools and even the education minister have photo ops with Jang Nara and Daniel Choi [think that the top photo]....not sure how i feel about that..governemnet has way too much control over TV already without whispering in the producers ear about what 'they' would like to see in regard to the 'real' korean school...
In regard to the fight Jang Nara character has with the unruly student she simple said the truth that if she meet a delinquent like that she would feel scared [in real life]

"fierce realism." i am skeptical, which does not mean that the series won't be good. but since school 2013 is a mainstream network tv show (and granted my experience watching kdramas is more limited), i doubt their claims of "fierce realism," whatever that even means.

Let's hope it comes close to the same level of realness Jungle Fish 2 achieved when it comes to portraying school and youth and actual emotions.

I like that girl Hyoyoung. Saw her once in KBS drama special Jungle Fish 2. She's acting alongside T-Ara's Jiyeon. And I think that, she's a better actress than Jiyeon :-)

And the girl playing Queen in Faith, I like her too.. Perhaps, she can win the Best New Actress award at KBS Drama Awards, she was in 3 dramas so far with KBS in 2012.

I hope this show will do better and make me fall in love again with high school drama. The one I really enjoyed was Dream High.

Such a good-looking cast. With so much pretty around it would be hard enough to focus on what actually is going on in the drama..XD
Can't wait for this to start.

Appears promising. After the success of Reply 1997, it's just smart to wipe off some of the k drama gloss on a series like this. I wish good things for this series.
