Trailer and stills for disaster movie Tower

This movie’s been in the works for a while; it’s been promising a release for over a year, but the time has finally come for blockbuster disaster film Tower to hit theaters, in just a few weeks. It’s the citizens-trapped-in-a-burning-skyscraper movie that promises big effects and heartwarming heroism… yunno, amidst the total panic and horror of people trapped in a burning building (and on Christmas Eve, no less).

It’s the latest project from director Kim Ji-hoon of Sector 7 and May 18, though mostly people are just calling it another Haeundae. Not hard to see why — you’ve got your disaster, and you’ve got your Sol Kyung-gu, which pretty much makes it the fire disaster film to Haeundae’s water disaster film. Every yin’s gotta have a yang?

Sol Kyung-gu stars as a firefighter who’s called to the scene to lead the rescue effort when the 108-story tower goes up in flames, while Sohn Ye-jin (Chilling Romance) and Kim Sang-kyung (White Christmas, May 18) play two employees in the building, who will be the emotional center for those trapped inside. Sohn Ye-jin runs a restaurant up on the top, while Kim Sang-kyung manages the building, and also happens to have a young daughter who’s trapped up there. So while everyone is running down, he’ll be going up to save her.

The trailer looks impressive, and well, with Sohn Ye-jin at the center of it, the teaser alone makes me want to cry. It’ll hopefully be a better outing from PD Kim, whose monster-at-sea disaster film Sector 7 pretty much tanked. Tower looks like it has heart though, because it’s less about the badassery and more about ordinary people and the moments of human connection in the face of disaster. Please just let some of the people survive, otherwise it’s going to be one somber Christmas.

Tower premieres December 19.

A tower, Christmas, heroes: A mix of Die Hard and The Towering Inferno. If done well, it can be the perfect pop corn movie for this winter.

I had a total flashback to The Towering Inferno, which was first released when I was a girl, and my big sister took me to see it. I see they are using the restaurant-at-the-top idea, and the children-trapped idea - I wonder if they will use the roof helicopter rescue, the plummeting skyview elevator, and the cameos by famous actors, LOL.

Looks good, but don't know if I could watch a movie about people stuck in a burning skyscraper. Reminds me too much of 9/11 which hits home for me. Maybe in another 10 years...

Is that Kim Sung-Oh a.k.a Secretary Kim from Secret Garden I see? (last movie still before the bottom two posters) I feel like it's a game of Where's Waldo with him - he's in the supporting cast of every movie, it seems.

Yep. Reminds me of Towering Inferno, too. It's was my dad's favorite movie along with The Poseidon Adventure.

Movie looks good. The elderly couple was the one that really tugged at my heart. Reminded me of the old couple in the movie Titanic (that's the only scene I cried to in that movie).

This clip actually looks BETTER than 'Towering Inferno.' More real emotion, less soap opera. A fine cast.

I lost patience with 'Haeundae' because it didn't have that much to say until the waves hit, and because the special effects were screwed up. It was like two different movies cut into one. In one of them the waves are a couple of hundred feet tall and no one should have survived, in the other they're ten feet tall and you have some people who might get out alive.

I watched 'Sector 7' for Ha Ji Won, but always aware that the director had put no thought into the script and the story was a waste of first rate acting talent.

OH! He's the psycho killa. I was wondering who it was ya meant. I don't know about the movie though. Sector 7 was such a bust. It was all over the place and it sucked. I think he was trying to pull off Alien on an oil rig. I love HJW but in that she seemed to overact. It was sorta ridiculous. I think I'll wait for some reviews.

I hated 'Haeundae' and 'Sector 7' I only liked because it embraced how brainless it was. It depends a lot on the writer and what they're going for, but a trailer can't get me excited yet. It can go either way. Shallow tearjerker or really good emotional film. Like with most works, won't know till we see it.
