Wolf Boy takes the box office

There seems to be no end in sight to the string of domestic box office hits in Korea this year. Wolf Boy starring Song Joong-ki and Park Bo-young opened in first place this week, and is poised to sell over 500,000 tickets in four days. The film is receiving heaps of critical praise as well, and now Song Joong-ki is being called the king of both screens small and big, with his Nice Guy / Wolf Boy double-first-place killer combo. One Pretty Face to Rule Them All.

It’s just fantastic timing for him, because Nice Guy (KBS’s current Wednesday-Thursday drama and ratings leader) is one of those turning point roles for his career. He’s been the lead in films before, but it’s his first time as a carry-a-drama leading man, and having the show and his concurrent movie both end up commercial successes means big big things for Song.

Wolf Boy is an unusual love story between a reserved girl who’s shut away in a country home and a feral wolf boy. They develop a friendship and she teaches him how to be more human (the toothbrushing still below is my favorite), and they eventually fall in love. But of course when the town discovers that they have a dangerous creature in their midst, the trouble begins.

I can’t wait to get my hands on this movie, mostly because every single still and trailer I’ve seen is gorgeously shot. The film is written and directed by Jo Sung-hee (of horror film End of Animal), and in three days at the box office, it sold 457,205 tickets and heads into the weekend still at Number 1. Whether nice boy, bad boy, or wolf boy, one thing is certain: Song Joong-ki is the It Boy.

I used to watch a few k-dramas here and there. When I was earning my first masters, I hardly ever had free time. I was reading and writing all the time. After I took my writing exams to get my degree, I had a few months during the summer to myself. That's when I became an avid k-drama watcher. Things are slightly easier for my second masters (depending on the type of courses I am taking), but I also feel like I discovered things later in life. I have other interests but feel that the real world is closing in on me too soon.

II went to a talk about the Hallyu wave, and this guy was saying ythat a big reason the movie industry has done so well recently is the shift from big budget SFX extravaganzas like D-Wars to low(er)-budget films with good stories. And that Korean film crews are awesome at what they do and make gorgeous films. Haven't seen a ton of Korean movies, but these stills and the film's success seem to prove that point. Maybe you guys can do a movie podcast? Tell us about your fave movies abd stuff? Or have you done one of these already?

I would kind of disagree. Korea has done really well in terms of high art films since the 90s (or maybe even before that) that have a great deal of complex story telling and amazing acting. However, I would have to agree in terms of "popular" movies, "popular" meaning movies not made to win cannes film festival awards.

0

Required fields are marked *

Smart.

I stay away from movies that are well received in Cannes, Venice or Berlin, like a plague. Those Europeans have really out-of-whack taste and standards ...

I've often wondered where the hell the South Korean dramas got their melo cancer genes. They certainly did not invent the genre. It has to be the post-WWII French films, the so-called auteur-cinema, which never caught on in Britain or America (we know better), but which for incomprehensible reasons became the standard in South Korea.

I've watched some of his previous dramas and movies, and I could say that this boy really knows how to act! He can do both comedy and heavy drama. The emotion he exerts and his facial expressions are perfect for every scene he makes.

Now, I'm moving SJK several notch higher on my favorite actors list. He's currently #2. :-)

he is kind of a scene stealer for me....when i was watching triple i always found his character to be adorable...cute enough for me to actually repeat his part^^
In Will it snow for Christmas he had a very small role but he was an adorable doting oppa..
But it was Sungkyunkwan scandal that made me his fan...i may have fallen for Yoochun through that drama but Gu Yong Ha was my fav character of the drama ♡ aaaaah i loved his flirty ways and his funny twirls! Ahh i miss that character!!
And currently he is doing so well in Nice Guy! Gosh i am positively spazzing over Joong Ki here!!
This boy will do great things...i just hope his effort is recognized at the award ceremonies too :)

He's never lacked for popularity in Korea. :)

The challenge has been for him to be taken seriously as an actor. (Call it the Leonardo Dicaprio or Robert Redford dilemma.) He's never, ever been embroiled in any controversy over his acting, that's never been the issue. But in the early days, they (both the industry and the audience) just couldn't get past his looks and it often resulted in their underestimating his potential and abilities as an actor. He changed that with Tree With Deep Roots last year, and his double home-run this year with Nice Guy and A Werewolf Boy cement it. His roles in NG and AWB are so wide apart, the fact that the industry people and the audience can see for themselves what he can do simultaneously means that they'll never mistake him for anything but a dead serious actor and an incredibly talented one at that.

I'm a new fan of SJK. He's a revelation to me. I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you on the LeoD comparison but IMO, if there's anyone in HW A-list that had to fight off and work hard to get off from his pretty boy image that shows in his body of work, that would be Brad Pitt. I hope SJK with his abundance of talent and charisma, follows a similar career trajectory. Like Pitt, he is a character actor trapped in a leading man's body.

It was a real good vehicle for Song Joong Ki to show another side of his acting abilities. I really enjoyed the movie from a love story point of view. It was at our international film festival, which normally has that queer, indie feel to most films, and to a non-asian audience it might have felt short of 'uniquely' interesting, ie, my caucasian neighbours got up and left before the movie ended. Yet the asians in the theatre and the remaining open minded caucasian audience did enjoy it and clapped at the end of the production. For me, I loved it bec SJK had very few lines and yet thru his body actions and eyes, you believed his character to be sad, lonely, and longing for acceptance and love. I've also been watching the Nice Guy, so it's wonderful to see his acting ranges both at the same time. From little words (WB) to many words that imprint (NG), he convinces you to believe in his character. I'm glad he chose this film to do. He's becoming a great actor, not just yummy eye candy that i can't stop eating up! =)

DB needs to make a deal with the box offices in SK to allow us access to currently playing movies online. Just charge us the regular per ticket fee ;)
Can't wait to see this one. The plot alone has me reeled in, and the cast is just a bonus (albeit a very hot bonus!!).

Slightly OT:

Here lately I've been watching a SK movies that I missed the first time around on Netflix (my local cable provider even offers mostly SK flix in its foreign lineup and I love them for it).
I just finished watching Welcome to Dongmakgol (onDemand) and omg, how funny/sad it was. I've also noticed that movies produced in SK seem to be much longer than a lot of movies that are produced in the US. The last 3 movies alone were all well over 140 minutes each. Yesterday I decided to watch Glove and The Front Line and I didn't regret a single minute. There's just something about Korean made movies that seems a cut above the rest. At least in my book.
Movies like these just make me realize how much I'd love to have access to current feature films, especially with todays talent.

SKKS was the first time I'd ever seen Song Joong Ki and he was my most favorite of the Joseon F4. While most people were more drawn to the quiet hero played by Yoo Ah In, I just completely fell head over heels for Song Joong Ki's Gu Yong Ha. It was a pretty awesome character for him to take.

I'm glad he's getting so much recognition for his acting and that he's at a great break-through point in his career. I just wish I could see Wolf Boy soon since I have to wait for English subs.

And like you, I ended up jumping on board Running Man because of Song Joong Ki. He's quite influential with his pretty face and all; and I think it's excellent that he's the type of actor who can prove that even pretty faces can have great acting talent and skill.

BTW, here's a site for Obstetrics and Gynecology Doctors. I haven't seen it myself either, but you can find English subs for a lot of series just about anywhere nowadays. But DramaFever is where I get my fix: http://www.dramafever.com/drama/741/1/Obstetrics_and_Gynecology_Doctors/

I hadn't seen Song Joong-ki in anything until Nice Guy, and I am loving him. I cannot wait to see this movie at some point. It probably won't be in America for a while if ever. It just looks so good and sad.

Song Joongi Ki
Such a pretty face, too.

I liked the meta in the scene where his face is all tore up and he comments “To tell you the truth, I like my face now. It’s become more like a human face. Having a painting-like, good-looking face is getting really boring now.”

While I don't think SJK wishes he were ugly, it would be easier to be taken seriously if he weren't so ridiculously surreally beautiful. I think LKJ had/has the same "problem" if you want to call it that.

This is truly Song Joong Ki's year. He's been everywhere now and all things about him become a hit! I'm glad that finally people see his true talent, he's such natural actor.
He's on the top of Best Young Korean Actor right now.

way before Nice Guy, I watched him in Tree With Deep Root. He was so amazing in just 6 episodes. I wish PDs will make the Young King Sejong drama, Song Joong Ki is the perfect actor to play the role.
