Yoochun’s fans demand firing of his co-star

File this one under the What The Fuck Files of Dramaland.

There’s a tempest brewing in the teapot of I Miss You, the upcoming MBC melodrama starring Yoochun and Yoon Eun-hye. You may have heard of the show? Perhaps once or twice, or okay, practically daily as the drama gears up for its launch next week. The controversy? Netizens are demanding that the production fire one of the actresses, Jang Mi-in-ae. The reason? “She doesn’t suit the drama.”

Suuuuure. Says the netizens who haven’t seen a single episode, to the people making the show. According to the news reports, the uproar stems from the JYJ fandom, as in the supporters of Yoochun’s pop group with Jaejoong and Junsu. Essentially they don’t like her and want her out, and have been exceedingly vocal about it.

Jang Mi-in-ae plays a webtoon writer harboring a one-sided love for Yoochun’s character, and she gets entangled in the love triangle with Yoon Eun-hye. Aw, that means she’s not even a real contender for the hero’s affections — Oppa is safe from her clutches, but the fandom is reportedly adamant against having Jang Mi-in-ae sullying the drama with her “sexy image.”

Yes, Jang has had some sexy photo shoots, but nothing really scandalous; it’s the standard stuff of your Star Hwabo variety. You know, bikinis and cleavage. (It’s Maxim lite, not Playboy.) And she’s played sultry characters before — you may recall her seductive Min-ae in 2006’s Soulmate (which is on my all-time favorite dramas list). But what should that matter? No sluts allowed in dramaland, is that what you’re saying? No sexiness except for the kind that’s kid-tested, mother-approved?

Poor girl. What a crap reaction to your casting, and when you’re just a supporting role. Aside from her image concerns, the Jang Mi-in-ae opposition has accused JYJ’s agency, C-JeS Entertainment, of casting Jang as a coattail-rider. Basically, they think the agency has bought the casting using Yoochun’s starpower. To which I say: Do you even know how entertainment works? There is a term for this, and it is packaging. It’s hardly shady. It’s the whole point of being with a large agency that has the weight to package a project, to leverage a bigger name to get its lesser-knowns attached and working in projects. This is standard in Hollywood.

I thought this hullaballoo would blow over quickly because the controversy is so stupid, but it’s lingered and even picked up steam. I suppose it shouldn’t be too surprising given how large and fervent the JYJ fanbase is — they’re super organized and passionate, sometimes to a frightening degree. This is the group battling all those sasaeng fan problems (as in, the intrusive kind of uber-fan who crosses the line into stalking and harassing the object of their affection). And you know, I totally understand having a strong negative reaction to a casting and wishing for an undo pill. If we love a drama, or a star, or an idea, the possibility of something ruining that can lead to a lot of frustration.

But there’s reasonable disappointment, and there’s inappropriate. It’s saddening that they’re jumping all over this actress so fiercely. The production has even come out to state that Jang Mi-in-ae will not be ousted (phew), and that she got the role after going through the full audition process. “When you watch the drama, you will understand why we chose Jang Mi-in-ae,” said one rep.

The more I think about it, it just makes me sad and mad. It’s just dumb.

Since they're fans of Yoochun, means they know the casting drama behind the DRAMA. And they still do this???? The so-called fans still wants to create additional casting drama a week before premiere?!?!? Let them concentrate on filming, as it looks as if they're already behind, what with the late casting of leads.

If you really want to harass anyone, maybe it should be YC's agency, as they're the one who insisted on bundling her. /just a thought/

i wish people wouldn't pin this all on "crazy young JYJ fans." honestly from what i've seen, korean JYJ fans haven't been happy with this casting but they aren't demanding her to be cut. believe it or not, the majority of JYJ fandom are in their 20s, and more with women in their 30s and 40s than you think.

the fans in the article mentioned are a minority in JYJ fandom, and no one is more embarrassed than us fans that yoochun had to apologize for the behavior of a few, and in doing so giving a bad name for all JYJ fans.

just wanted to point that out before everyone starts talking about how all JYJ fans are crazy jealous teenagers who can't stand seeing their idol with another woman.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Seriously, I feel so bad for this actress. I hope she rocks in her role, so all these people feel bad about what they're saying and doing.

Sometimes, I don't get Korean fans. I don't mean this in a prejudiced way, but it just feels like some fans think they own the stars they idolize, and have a say in who they work with or where they go or whatever. It's ridiculous. I feel bad for all the Korean actors, actresses, and idols that I myself have come to love. Maybe I'm not as biased because I'm in America, and far removed from all that fan stuff. I'm just sorry that some fans carry this way to far for some celebrities in Korea.

Sorry, I really don't understand this and it's sad that 'fans' are capable of doing something so stupid.

*googles Jang Mi-in-ae* OOOoooh now I get it. Her trampy soulmate character wasn't one of my favorites either, but this is a big whatever since it was the character, not the actress. I wish they had been this vocal over a different casting for a certain other drama. But whatchagonnado...

Not only does the fans have problems with her casting, so do the scriptwriter. Her role originally had much more going, but the writer reduced her scenes to a minimal because the writer does not like her casting as well.
Han Jungwoo's (Yoochun's role) halfsister, and the love triangle (Yoochun, Eunhye and Seungho) will be getting more airtime.
So whatever the rep supposedly said, it's probably just paying lip service.

Uh, and where did this little nugget of information come from? Allkpop? Naver? Somebody's Me2Day page? Really, a professional writer (and I should know, I've been one for 25 years) would not be so unprofessional - or risk their future marketability - by revealing this sort of information. Notice that when writers are asked about why they did this or that with a character, they usually reply in very vague, artistic terms - it's not because they are vague and artistic, but because they've got to maintain professional confidentiality about their methods if they want to stay employable.

So I like your name - very apt.

You may have been a professional writer for 25 years, but I'm sorry to say that you don't know much about the K-drama industry. K-scriptwriters do occasionally publicly say before hand whether or not they will they will reduce the number scenes/lines/basically screen time an actor/actress will have. And in those cases, they usually provide clear (not vague and artistic) reasons why.

I agree with you. I was wondering what all the fuss was about if she had only done some picures in a bikini, but then I googled her Korean name and then I saw all those questionable pictures of her. It's not only topless, but completely naked o.O Not at all the kind of Star Hwabo pictures that JB said.

It was kind of disturbing really, and I don't know if her image will fit well with this drama, but I do agree that demanding her to quit is too much. I don't like this actress at all, but we should give her at least a chance, and then judge for ourselves if she fits the role or not.

I've heard of the scariness of Korean fans but wow! As a fan of DBSK, I can understand that they do have a "purity" aura, but whether they are pure sainted types is not my problem. And if the fans are true fans, they shouldn't want their idols to stagnate. Fans want the object of their fandom to grow and expand in all ventures.

Dramabeans needs to apologize for generalizing all JYJ fans. If you even bothered to do your research, you'd realize the only ones who had a problem with this were a minority of Yoochun's fans and some drama fans.

You're angering an entire fanbase and scolding JYJ fans when the majority had nothing to do with these demands.

JYJ fans are accepting of the works each member does. If this truly applied to the whole fanbase, everyone would be just as upset over Jaejoong working with JiHyo.

Again, this has little do with the fanbase as a whole. It had more to do with drama fans and some Yoochun fans that disagreed with the casting decision.

Besides, this information is over a month old now..... why is it surfacing in the media just now? People are over it. Move on!

Next time, research properly before you jump on a story.

Seriously, besides the boob shots aren't that sexy anyway. It's not like she's squeezing them or squeezing them together... or trying to seduce the camera. Some of them actually are taken professionally and pretty well. It's like getting upset at Venus De Milo... or the Statue of David.

And I don't get some fans... really? Sounds like they are jealous. He's going to get older and he's going to marry. He might pull a Jae Hee stunt considering this. Get over it. He's not going to be an idol forever. *sighs* I don't understand.

The complaints are from Yoochun's drama fans. They mostly support only YC not JYJ.
Please do not generalize all JYJ's fandom. These hardcore YC's fans only love him, they are called acgae fans, in fact they also bashed Jaejoong and Junsu and prefer YC to go solo. They mostly hate Jaejoong because he is also an idol actor.
I know these fans are crazy, but they do not represent JYJ's fandom, in fact alot JYJ's fans were against the petition to fire Jang Mi-in-ae.

I feel sorry for Jang Mi-in-ae. They are already judging her before they even saw her act in the drama. And with such a strong hatred towards her, she could doing Meryl Streep-level acting in this drama and they will still say she's a bad actress.

And these kinds of stories bring out the angry detractors/instigators (see first page of comments) and the extreme supporters that just leads to arguments, personal attacks from both sides, etc. This is not omona or allkpop! Sigh.. such is the internet. Thankfully the vast majority of people that frequent this site are able to act maturely, but the few that infest their comments of hatred in this site... ugh...

Errr.... do you have any proof that the JYJ fanbase organized this protest against the casting of Jang Mi In Ae, and not individual fans of Yoochun?? Just because riled up Yoochun fans congregate on Missing You message boards and protest and complain and whatnot doesn't mean it's an organized attack by an entire fandom...

Sigh... I'm tired of everyone vilifying JYJ fans and I'm not even a JYJ fan.

A huge congratulations to those crazies for making the news and dragging everyone otherwise uninvolved with their mess.

But seriously JB, it's unfair to flock us all with them, crazies exist in every group, that's why they're called the extremes, but we don't generalize them all as one do we? If we're following by that rule then no fandom/group/communities would be considered as sane.

Please do not generalize the entire JYJ fanbase. These demands and requests did not come from our fandom. We did not organize any kind of demand.

This article is not reporting the story as it is.

SOME of Yoochun's fans have made this type of request awhile back. It had absolutely nothing to do with the entire JYJ fanbase. Most JYJ fans didn't even know this was taking place as it was organized by a select group of Yoochun's fans (acgaes) and some people (drama fans) who do not like the actress.

Sure, there are some of us JYJ fans that do not like the actress, but we are accepting of who the members work with and what they choose to do with their career path.

Even some dedicated Chunsas did not agree with the demands that were made.

Please correct the article. It is entirely misleading and you are fueling hate against the JYJ fandom when we are innocent of making any type of requests.
