Kim Sun-ah confirms The Five
by | December 20, 2012 | 48 Comments

Confirmations are in for Kim Sun-ah’s next project — she’ll be taking the lead role in the revenge film The Five, based on the popular webtoon by Jung Yeon-shik. I have to say, I’m pretty excited that she’ll be playing a dark character in a revenge thriller; she’s got chops, but her choices tend to be safe, which for her is rom-com territory, with just a few detours in nearby melodrama or action comedy. A role where she doesn’t get to rest on her familiar dramaland persona will be one to watch.

The Five’s original webtoon creator will also write and direct the movie version, about a group of people who come together to get revenge on a serial killer who robbed them of their loved ones. Kim Sun-ah will play the heroine Eun-ah, who loses her husband and daughter in a brutal serial murder, and nearly dies herself. She barely survives, “body and heart fallen,” and ends up in a wheelchair half-paralyzed with nothing to do but plot her revenge.

She puts her own organs down as collateral to fund her mission (Dude. Hardcore.) and puts together a team. They include a North Korean defector, a former gangster, and a deadbeat debtor — all people who are marginalized by society in some way. The story is as much about the way these people come together as a strange family, fueled by revenge.

The webtoon has an interesting background in that it came from a script for a movie to begin with. (The series started in 2011 and is still ongoing.) It makes sense that as a newbie director the script alone might not have had enough clout, but now that it’s gained a following online in webtoon form, the movie gets to be made. Win-win, and very well played. Now we just have to wait to see who they’ll cast as the other four members of her crew.

The Five starts shooting early in the new year for a 2013 release.

    Thank you! Off to read…

I agree with GF, it would be interesting to see her play a dark character, and to see who the next actors/actresses cast for the movie will be. Looking forward to it.

I will be happy to be pleasantly surprised.

However, I am pretty certain that Kim Sun Ah will once again recycle herself, as she has always done since Sam Soon.

I may still help myself to it, if the drama comes in a package that contains enough interesting bits other than Kim Sun Ah.

      • 1.2.1 Mystisith

It will be a movie, not a drama. ^^

      • 1.2.2 Atiya

She puts her heart and soul into her characters causing withdrawal when filming is done. Her role in Sam Soon was nothing like Scent of a woman. City hall was nothing like I Do I Do. I do agree that we all have different taste in dramas and actors. If you think of it all actors recycle some mannerisms. People in general recycle daily, same laugh, same facial expressions, and same conversations. I guess I am saying that she is human.

I totally agree with you. I’ve seen all her dramas and I also see no similitudes between the roles she played. Also, her character in I do I do was quite a change compared to her previous roles since she had to be cold and charismatic. So saying that she recycles is a bit far fetched in my opinion.

something new for Kim Sun Ah, who has mostly done rom-coms..

  3. kookicookie

Oh cool~! I love her!!! yay!

  4. skelly

FINALLY. I totally agree about Kim Sun Ah sticking to safe choices. I like her best when she is playing strong, a little raw, and coloring outside the lines, and it I think it past time she left rom-coms behind. Maybe she’s grown out of them, maybe she likes the premise but gets bored in the execution, but I feel that both of her recent projects had moments, if not entire episodes, that felt phoned-in.
I admire her acting ability, it’s just I want her to kick it up a notch, and not with more tears.

I’m pretty excited that she’ll be playing a dark character in a revenge thriller”

Me too! I’m sure she’s more than capable to pull this type of role. I really want to see her portraying a character that’s different to what we often or used to see her portrays

  6. ade

After seeing her in I do, I do, I know she can pull it off.

  7. Chuck

It sounds a bit like Lady Vengeance, with Lee Young Ae.

    • 7.1 obivia

Ditto! Not a bad association (I can watch Lady Vengeance at the drop of a hat).

  8. Mystisith

“Dude. Hardcore.” Indeed. Kill Bill but with a rag tag family.
Will it be “black is black, there is no turning back” or will it be dark grey with a ray of light?
I’m in the camp of those who want to see her try something different so color me interested, at least.

  9. Danna

This movie sounds so cool…totally mt type of dark…now that they have a fantastic actress to lead…excited to see who thet’ll cast next….totally going to be following this one closely

  10. 10 Noelle

Yes! Finally she gets a role with some meat. I really can’t wait to see her as this character. I know she’ll be amazing. I wish she got offered roles like this on dramaland. Hopefully, after this she will.

Im irrationally happy for this role!! at times its a breath of fresh air to see some -badass- different roles…!

    ℒℴνℯ Kim Sun-ah ♥‿♥

    bring on the Badass ̿ ̿ ̿’̿’\̵͇̿̿\з=(•_•)=ε/̵͇̿̿/’̿’̿ ̿

    Kim Sun-ah…
    will be Amazing!

  15. 15 canxi

Oh yes. I am so in for this.

  16. 16 snow

can hyun bin pick this as his post-army project? would love to see him re-team with kim sun-ah, miss their MNIKSS chemistry!

    • 16.1 Annie

I strongly doubt there will be any romance in this movie. Also, I loved Sam Soon as a drama but I thought the chemistry was only so-so, with Kim Sun Ah trying the hardest on that front. I think it’s time for a rewatch!

    • 16.2 jastinel

Same here, I love to see them working together!

  17. 17 Orion

The cast will probably make or break this. I expect to see equally good actors in the rest of the roles. This premise has great potential. Can’t wait!

  18. 18 sulyn

Yeh, Kim Sun Ah in a different role! She will definitely
deliver. Am looking forward to this movie.

  19. 19 True2u

*Calms down* OK Kim Sun Ah??? Yes, you don’t have to say anymore. I am T H E R E!!!!! I’m just wondering who will be the rest of the ragtag crew!! and most of all who is going to be the Killer?

  20. 20 jastinel

KSA is not sticking to safe choices, as far as I can remember, in one of her interview, she said that she want to try different kinds of role and she even said she want to be a villain or play bad, but no offers for that kind of role she even joked about, her looking innocent and pure (something like that, correct me if I`m wrong!)
I`m happy that she have this project for 2013 and hopefully another TV-drama.
    KSA….Love u forever!

  21. 21 Angelica Pinero

GREAT ♥ KIM SUN AH ♥ The only actress i LOVE ♥

  22. 22 toystar

OMG I’m so excited. I love Kim Sun Ah!!!!

  23. 23 gh

kim sun ah is too skinny. looked better as sam soon

    • 23.1 msim

      That’s neither here nor there.
She’s a fantastic actress – her body; her choices (big, medium or small).

Dark, vengeful KSA sounds intriguing, really loved Girl Scouts.

  24. 24 lovelovesunny

thank you so much, i am very happy!because i miss kim sun a very much.

  25. 25 zoe

I ve seen an old hindi/bollywood movie with the same story…altho in that one the lead lady is not paralyzed. But it was a horrible 😛 Too loud for me :/

    • 25.1 alodia

Yeah, similar. But I’ve read the webtoon and there’s more to it than revenge. So much more to it!

  26. 26 omo

I think KSA has been so terribly typecast that no such roles have been offered to her. I hope this is a breakout role in bad ass territory for her. Though I’m not liking the paralyzed bit, I do hope it’s more psychological than physiological. I so want to see her long, sexy legs kicking ass.

    • 26.1 True2u

hahaha I had to double read “psychological than physiological” first i was like, “huh?” lol. i thought the words were the same. definitely agree tho.

  27. 27 MsMilkT

So super excited that I can’t even describe with words.
Not only does this sound like a very dark psychological thriller, but now that Kim Sun Ah has hopped on board, I’m just totally SOLD.

I too hope that this will be her next breakthrough role, I love her so so much!! My gosh, to see a dark, vengeful Kim Sun ah? (Lee Young Ae in Sympathy for Lady Vengeance anyone?) Kyaaa!!

And to quote [nomu nomu nomu]:

Bring on badass Kim Sun Ah ̿ ̿ ̿’̿’\̵͇̿̿\з=(•_•)=ε/̵͇̿̿/’̿’̿ ̿

  28. 28 df

    I ADORE this woman!

  29. 29 shinta

    Great …… i really can’t wait her new movie…. ^^

  30. 30 suri

obviously super keen 🙂 but since no one has asked the question: anyone have an inkling where i could read an english version of the webtoon by Jung Yeon-shik? looked in all the usual places, nada 🙁 any help would be awesome <3

    • 30.1 alodia

      I don’t think there’s any and I don’t think it’ll be because it’s a paid manhwa.
