King of Dramas in extension talks

Oh no. I feel terribly conflicted about this: SBS is reportedly negotiating a four-episode extension for its Monday-Tuesday King of Dramas, and things are looking likely that it will happen.

I’m thoroughly enjoying the drama, which makes me laugh out loud and feel just so durned good — it’s good-natured without being insipid, funny without being slapstick, and I love that. And it’s still early enough (kind of) to write in the extension — plus, with dramaland as its source material, there is PLENTY to draw from. And reference. And mock to hilarious effect.

It’s just… you know. Extensions. They never do a drama good, do they? At best, they don’t do any harm, but it’s never an improvement. So let’s just say I’d prefer the show stayed on its 16-episode course, rather than upping the count to 20.

It’s curious that the show should entertain extension talks, given that it’s not doing well in the ratings. It’s not a complete bomb, but it is taking up the rear of Monday-Tuesday shows with numbers in the 7% range — so, it’s more like the mania dramas Anthony’s so keen on avoiding, since he’s all about the smash hits, the thirty-percenters, the daebaks.

Whenever an extension seems puzzling, I always turn my attention to the show slated to follow it, since it’s possible the next show needs the time more than the current one does. In this case SBS has the 24-episode Yawang / Queen of Ambition planned for the January slot, which sounds like a straight melo and stars Kwon Sang-woo and Su Ae. Hm, that’s a show we haven’t heard very much of at all; could it be they’re running behind?

In any case, a rep from one of the actor’s camps said, “We still have to consult with the production company, but there’s no problem schedule-wise so we are considering the extension positively.”

Well, let’s look at this glass-half-full: More episodes means more meta, more feel-good relationship moments, more tongue-in-cheek jabs at the industry, more Anthony, more faaaabulous fur-lined three-piece suits. It’s not all bad news.

I keep on seeing the King of Drama on my Viki app but I can't seem to click it.

Is it a good tv show? I mean the guy is really not 'eye candy' and kind of old looking..hahaha.

But Cha Seung Won in The Greatest Love, he was hilarious and his character made him adorable!

LOL Kim Myung-min's face was not made to be an eye candy but to give out the most brilliant expressions an actor could ever possibly make. Born an actor, not a model hihihi! :-)

It's the best drama, if you ask me.

I watched ON AIR. Yeah it's good. Watched it because I'm a fan of Lee Beom-soo and Kim Ha-neul. But I ended up forwarding their parts and became a major fan of Park Yong-ha and Song Yoon-ah.

As per my opinion, it is good but not better than King of Dramas. Still a fan of Park Yong-ha hihihi! I wanted to marry that guy for real!

It's good, it just has more romance, if I can call it that, and focuses more on specific topics about acting and writers, funding etc, but doesn't go as deep into the dirty end. It does have its "bad guys", but it's nowhere near as dramatic or tense as 'The King of Dramas'. It's a bit more soapy than this one, in a sense. A bit more boring a version.

I only watched it for Lee Beom Soo and the theme (I really dislike the writer of it after an interview she did), but it was an ok show. Nothing great, but good.

I felt the same with Park Yong Ha. It's the first and probably only work of his I will see. You do tend to get immersed into the episodes, but it really is saddening when you remember. You can't help think of how nice his acting was, how nice of a young man he looked like. And then you remember. But hey, watching his work and appreciating what he did is not bad.

Plus, Lee Beom Soo has been in other films with now-gone actors (2 actresses, that I know of), so I got used to that before even picking up 'On Air'. As "used to" as you can get to such a horrible thing.

I'd recommend 'On Air' though. It's slower and does get boring at times, but it's an experience. It's sure better than most sludge that comes out, so you're covered anyway.

I personally loved it. It was less extravagant than KOD, maybe more intimate. I learnt a lot about the dirty laundry of Dramaland. The romance was kept low-key too but it was touching. I know some people found Kim Ha-neul's character tiring cause she is like a female jerk but the reasons for her behavior were there, so... Also, good OST. And as usual with that writer, funny crazy dialogue.

Anyone else notice that very few dramas nowadays are the standard 16 episodes? Extending the average lifetime of a drama would make sense from a 'recouping investment' perspective, but as a drama watcher, it makes me a bit sad because there'll be fewer dramas and the dramas that do get aired will be even more convoluted than usual. Sigh.

For some reason I was already under the impression that this was going to be 20 eps....considering that the drama within the drama is just really starting production at the halfway point (of the real drama) I think theres enough time to add in a lot of conflicts for a 20 ep show.....as long as they dont drag out the other (non-TV related) plotlines

I was just thinking last week that this drama could use an extension since the drama had hit halfway point without the drama within the drama starting production. I'd be interested to follow Kyungsung Morning's production from beginning to end - like when there's a time crunch because of live shoots.

I have to disagree. Jumong was a drama that should have ended a long time earlier, but it started going around in circles and circles for too long. Especially when you consider that in the end, it was 80 episodes. And we all complain when a drama hits 30...

Once you get into the really heavy sageuk dramas you're looking at anywhere from 30 to 60 episodes or even more at least. Like Dong Yi, San Yi, Queen Seon Duk, Jewel in the Palace, etc.

0

MBC's Miss Mermaid is 256 Episodes long. :-)

0

I am awed by these numbers. I shouldn't be though since Indian dramas go on for like two years but with Korean dramas, 16-20 episodes sound just about right.

0

the ones that go up to several hundreds are usually everyday dramas. Also, for like sagueks, they are usually long because the story telling is usually like an epic and the weekend dramas are usually about families and people like watching those for a long time, because it's like...getting to know a family and adkfasdlkfj it's just great.
I might just be raving about Unexpected You, the family drama Kim Nam Joo was amazing in.

0

Well.

Gaksital remained even with its 4-episode extension (though some things got repetitive especially in the middle of the drama), whereas Nice Guy actually NEEDED an extension..... its ending was really hurried. And incomplete.

Nice Guy felt like they were waiting for an extension even till the last minute but didn't get it so they decided hodge podge it as a result. Which I didn't understand because they were supposed to have a script for the original prescribed amount of episodes, right?

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Apparently Gaksital already had a lot of story to work with and cut it down to 20 episodes originally, and then they decided to go with 24 eps of which they already have material for. But for KoD I worry that extensions means the drama will become draggy because they have to think of stuff to fill in for 4 more episodes to an already solid story.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

You are right on that on Nice Guy. I need a more meaningful ending. I was expecting to see more episodes after Nice Guys' operation. How he had amnesia and how she's the one who helped him remember her this time.

Then the ending episode should of ended like .... him remembering her with a deja vu memory at the beach.

Required fields are marked *

I love KSW, but he's not the strongest actor out there. So it would have been better to have another solid actor to help carry the story, but instead were getting a walking cardboard instead.

Yunho is excellent on stage, but acting is another topic. Whenever he's on screen, either a) he blends into the background or b) whenever it's his line, his delivery isn't natural to the point that it's so obvious he's acting.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think we all know why Yunho got cast as the 2nd lead - Japan, Japan, Japan.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Well, he's been in 2 musicals and a few little drama roles/cameos since HTTG, so there might very well be improvement from Yunho. And at least he got only a supporting role. Not that crucial to carrying show, not as much pressure to do well, but still there to bring in his fans as viewers.

And yeah, they obviously want this drama sold in Japan. The fact that Yunho is fluent in Japanese and can very well promote it there all on his own is a big plus for the production team.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

He's the 2nd male lead though; sustaining a love triangle/rectangle/polygon takes some measure of talent. Does it bother anyone else that the writer either had to create a character specifically with Yunho in mind or modify her original plans after casting took place? It seems like these little casting games and cheap ploys for attention are really affecting the creative process (assuming that the writers aren't in on it to begin with).

We can't blame extension for that. It was just a crappy ending, probably forced on the production since it would be too "immoral" if things happened otherwise. An extension gained early on should not cause any such issues, when series even manage to do well with the scripts for each episode completed even on the last minute.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't think it was 'morality' that the writers were concerned with - after all, Kdramas are by and large written by women for women and they tend to sympathize with divorcees/single moms/other social pariahs. The concept of fate tying lovers together was introduced from the getgo but the execution was just piss poor.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I dropped Oohlala Spouses somewhere near the 14th episode and only heard that the original divorced spouses got back together....but what was all that about fate and all? That god and goddess just seemed to have disappeared somewhere in the middle of the show as if they had nothing to do. So I agree the fate part of the show was executed poorly. I even managed to forget about their past lives since it seemed to have no relevance after they switched back to their original bodies.

0

Required fields are marked *

you are so right, the plot was poorly developed and i guess that the writers just got tired in early episodes and wanted to mess with the audience because you can't create such a great oppa and then tell us that she has to get back with you cheater-monster ex husband...

We already have an endless supply of obstacles for the drama within a drama Kyungsung Morning, but with four more episodes, I cringe to imagine what machination they come up with now. So, good luck Writer-nim and do us proud :-)

Like someone mentioned, there can be a lot more meta fun so I really hope the production team doesn't make the show move at a snail's pace just to cover four extra hours. Since there's talk of extensions now, then the writer should take this early opportunity to plan out extra stuff rather than have things moving along slowly.

You're not alone in this. Korean dramas are well known for its romance but rarely do they execute it this well. The chemistry between Kim Myong Min and Jung Rye Won reminds me of Kang Ji Hwan and Park Shi Yeon in Coffee House. This is how romance should be shown.

When it's us the audiece who shivers with anticipation whenever we see our lead couples on the screen even when they just talk or glare at each other it means they do it right.

They show is really doing fantastic! I wonder whether we'll get a kissing scene as fantastic as the show itself.

During 10 I was trying to imagine how they would get to a first kiss.
Considering her firey temper- can't forget she dumped a bucket of OJ on him - I don't see how it could be anything other than BIG.
But they may surprise me and do a low key, sweet one.

Jomo! Seeing how the show is doing so far I have a feeling that it might indeed surprise us in kissing department.

Kim Myung Min is a great kisser and never shy away from intimate scene (Closer To Heaven as an example) but I don't know about Jong Rye Won whether she is in the same ilk with Go Hye Sun (which I like but is the worse actress when it comes to kissing).

And despite my imagination which is running wild I can't come up with a great kissing scene that will make us jump up and down with feverish fever. If they are going to give us one it must be a spectacular one not just an insipid meaningless kiss. I'd rather they have no kissing scene at all if that's all they could come up with.

Writernim, we have an absolute faith in your ability!

0

pipit you're right!!

Kim Myung-min is such a hot hot hot kisser!!!

In Closer to Heaven (with Ha Ji-won) and in Open City (with Son Ye-jin). But my favorite KMM kiss is in Bad Family (with Nam Sang-mi) so awkward!

Seriously, just them standing next to each other makes my heart race. They way they look at each other and just the support that is in the air. It's just heart stopping! I think I will die when they kiss.

I like that they both have each other's back and understand each other. It's not a PASSIONATE WILD romance where they bicker constantly, but they both respect each other's differences.

I LOVE that Kim is letting HER figure out her problems and treats her like a real adult and not a child. So romantic. But then he is always there giving her support.

Anyway, I love the undercurrents to them. It's not in your face, but you can slowly see the way they look at each other change and soften and that is just so sweet. I think this is not just the best romance this year, but probably ever. I loved how he said he trusted her in ep. 10. Swoon. So realistic and soft and ugh!!!

hehe. I can keep going. I watched Beethoven Virus and was not into Kim Myung Min but Anthony Kim just melts me inside. Anyway, I love that they both have what the other lacks and therefore make a whole!

Jung Ryeo Won and Kim Myung Min have ridiculous chemistry and that makes it better and they are executing this perfectly, it's a treat to watch!

Haha! What I would want to see is how Go-eun would explain to the director how the scene would be like.

When Go-eun explains it to director and she tries it on Hyun-min... Omg who would be #1 against!!

We need a demonstration. Anthony teaching the "how to kiss" to the clueless bad skilled main lead. "Come here my guinea's pig...". Man, that would be hilarious!

LOL @Mystisith I was pondering about that like 3 weeks earlier and I came to my senses: LOL and Anthony Kim became the instant director of KyungSung Morning!

What you said is an ideal scenario I've been imagining for weeks!

I want to see Hyun Min fall for Minah so bad. haha It would be hilarious to see him try to make her fall for him. :P

Not happy about the extensions, but if they are going to have an extension, the drama within the drama should also have an extension as well.

Overall, though I get the feeling that the grueling schedules are wearing everyone down...

8.9 ratings for ep 10. And that just prove viewers want more romance on the show.

Initially, I thought 16 eps is too short for this drama. But know with the extension I'm kinda conflicted too. But fingers crossed things will work out well.

I was actually just thinking how this drama seems more like a 20 episoder. Especially because they've barely started filming "Kyungsung Morning" and they have plenty to mine from the whole live-shoot side of things. But unless the writer and director always had something in their back pocket waiting for an extension, it could just mess things up. Please don't ruin this awesome show!

king of dramas may not have stellar ratings but it's definitely a hoot internationally.
My mom was watching the Vietnamese channel during the news and they were discussing the KOD.
Some scenes were played in the background and they just loved how this show gives an inside look of the world of drama-making.
I am against extensions, as always, but hopefully this gives more room for META META META.
I hope this doesn't mean slowing down the pace -- which i absolutely loved in the first half of this show.

I remember History of a Salaryman and how the two-episode extension just focused on the villain rather than the protagonists of the drama. But that's a whole different thing coz History was a ratings meat. I wonder what will happen to this show if it does really settle on an extension. Will they include all the dramas behind the dramas? They're currently on plagiarized script and stuff. What's in for us for the next one and half month? If they will include everything for this extension, then there's a big probability that the actors/actresses will be involved in an accident. Oh no! Hyun Min ah!

I was watching episode 10 earlier today, and was trying to remember if it was a 16 or 20 episode drama, since they do have lots of stuff they can still cover. I hope they can pull it off well! I LOVE this drama! You'll be watching and tense at some points, and all emotional at others, only to end up bursting into laughter here and there. I also totally agree with the comments about the wonderful romance in the drama. Any time it's Go Eun and Anthony on the screen I get all excited and flip out over the slightest smiles and smirks!

I love Anthony's slightest smiles and smirks. I still couldn't forget his facial expression when the wife of the Yakuza came to serve tea and looking at him Go Eun muttered to herself: "Huh, he's a man after all". That scene is going to be one of the most memorable scenes in KOD for me.

i do agree that it seems early enough to be discussing extensions, so i'm not too worried. plus, i secretly like this drama well enough that i'm not sorry to see four more episodes—IF done without dragging anything out. this is a series that could have been 20 episodes from the start, it's so fun.

i still think it's pretty obvious and a little reminiscent of on air. we're going to be watching all the conflicts that could occur at every stage of the drama-making process. great, but a bit predictable i think. that said, i'd be pleased if it ends up surprising me storyline wise. i'm having SUCH fun watching the three leads, but i think siwon is stealing the show. he is SO much more than i'd ever anticipated from him, and i love that he's decided to just go and run a triathlon with his character, figuratively speaking. ha!

speaking of extensions, i think oohlala greatly suffered from its. honestly, by the end it was like a completely different show. and ever since the grandpa fairy had made the ominous remark about how hyun-woo's post-cancer life couldn't be extended forever, i just kept waiting for his character to go into remission and die. then KJE got sick instead, but i still kept waiting... -_-

Please, please... Yes!!!!!
It"s the first time a drama would be extended for the good reasons:
-The drama(s) in the drama leaves us with a lot of story to unravel.
-The love lines need extra time to be showcased and we have many interesting secondary characters.
-I just need more of #KOD and it's a valid reason enough. :)

Dear Santa, I've been a good girl. That's the only thing I want for Christmas this year.

NO! I'm getting tired of the back-and-forth between World and Empire Productions. I'd be okay with the extensions if they stopped that and focused more on the actual relationships between the Kyung Seong team....

On one hand, I don't want an extension to mess with the show's pacing...but on the other hand, that would mean four more hours of listening to Kim Myun-min's amazing voice... :D

I'm choosing to be (cautiously) optimistic about this extension even though they usually elicit a loud BOO! from me. Just finished watching ep. 9 and they still haven't even started shooting Kyungsung Morning, so it feels to me like KOD actually needs a little extra time to counterbalance all the time it's spent on the KM pre-production arc. The characters' relationships have lots of room to grow and, as we all know, there's still a ton of great meta just waiting to be harvested. Also, it's hard for me to imagine that the writer of this particular drama went into this without giving any thought to the possibility of an extension.

For me it is good news.

To think that there are only 6 remaining episodes to uncover every detail.

We're still in the pre-prod and prod of Kyungsung Morning. We will still go through the post prod...

We will still go through when Kyungsung Morning is already aired. And the aftermath of the success of their drama.

There are still a lot to reveal. It won't fit in 6 episodes -- even though let's say each episode is tightly strong and filled with exciting details every bit of the way.

16 is okay. But I thought of it... and allowing 4 more episodes is just about the PERFECT time frame to unfold all storytelling and character developments.

Episode 20 is just about the right amount this storyline deserves (as how I see it watching the first 10 episodes). It's not a bad idea AT ALL. :-)

my thoughts exactly. well at first I was deeply worried about the extension...

but hey, i thought of the remaining episodes. only 6 remaining. 1 hr and 20 mins for each ep! and still have a lot to tackle and overtake.

20 minutes is darn perfect for this.

Hoooooray for extension!

I agree. I typically don't like extensions, but for some reason this drama is moving kind of slower - at least in the progression of the plot and all the relationships as well. I hope that means it will fit 20 episodes better. I hope the ratings keep going up, because this drama deserves it!

I disagree--I think it's more drama drama drama...this show within a show is never going to get filmed! It wouldn't surprise me if they needed more time because right now I feel like the pace is very slow.

We shall see--I vote upping Siwon's scenes--HyunMin would certainly agree ;)

For the first time ever, I hope they get the 4 extra eps.

We haven't even met the supporting actors on the set, or the music guy, or seen a funny wardrobe arguement.

I could watch just Siwon laughing that ridiculous laugh he has for an hour solid.

There had to already been a plan in the script to address either extension or shortening, depending on how they want their drama to succeed or fail.
We have to see what ideas the team tosses around to get more episodes. That will be hilarious.

Could Siwon and JRW be any cuter together? I don't even mean romantically. He seems to light up when she is around.

I enjoy this drama, but I notice one thing that kind of makes me a bit irritated. There are always ups and downs in every episode, so if one problem is solved, another problem will come out in the next episode...

This is welcome news to me, as long as they manage to keep me glued to the screen for the whole episodes like they have in the past.

I don't even really mind the repetition of constant dangers to the drama coming up. I love this drama.
