Queen Inhyun’s Man team preps new drama for tvN
by | December 18, 2012 | 96 Comments

Well that was fast. If it’s one thing tvN knows, it’s how to brand a hot thing — in this case it’s the PD-writer combo behind this year’s hit time-traveling romance Queen Inhyun’s Man, director Kim Byung-soo and writer Song Jae-jung. The band is back together for a follow-up drama slated for the new year called Court Lady, and they’re currently courting Lee Jin-wook (I Need Romance 2012) and Jo Yoon-hee (You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly) to play the leads.

It’s kind of a mixed bag of news though. On the one hand, I really liked Inhyun and was thrilled to hear that the same team was doing a new drama for tvN. On the other hand, it’s apparently going to be another time-traveling drama. Oy. Not only is that retreading the same narrative ground for the same creative team, I am sick to death of that theme. It’s so 2012. Inhyun was certainly the best of the time travelers this year, but shouldn’t we move forward, and on to whatever 2013’s drama-fad-to-be is?

Both Lee Jin-wook and Jo Yoon-hee are still considering the drama, so it’s not a done deal for the actors. I would’ve groaned at the Jo Yoon-hee casting if I had never seen her in the weekend drama You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly, because before that, she was just that super bland second lead in Lie to Me. But then she chopped off all her hair and played the tomboy middle daughter in that hit drama, and improved her screen presence a great deal.

Court Lady will feature another time traveling character, though these two time periods will reportedly be closer together. Still, if the title refers to a palace maiden, there has to be king in a palace, so we’re talking late Joseon at least. No word yet on which of the characters is the one who travels to the other time. They promise one big departure from Inhyun though — this drama will be less about the romance, and will feature a different kind of story. Hm. Can I trade the time travel for the romance?

The thing is, I’m so behind this creative team, and I’m doubly behind them doing another drama for tvN. But another drama with the same premise makes me sad. Because they’re capable of awesome, so why not let them do something new and amazing? This is where I think the Oh Boy series has the franchising done right — loose idea of target audience and flower boy theme, but no repeating of central premise from drama to drama. Instead they’re doing what tvN tried with I Need Romance, which is the version of branding that quite didn’t work for me — same drama, weaker version. I hope there’s enough to differentiate Court Lady from Inhyun, because I want this team to do well and keep making good dramas.

Court Lady will follow Flower Boy Next Door, and premiere in March.

      another time travelling drama -.-
      even though i loved inhyuns’man
      *rewatches kiss scenes*

      • 1.1.1 JO

I felt like the girl from “unexpected you” wasn’t that great at acting. It was like..she didn’t really have to do a lot of work. In fact, I think that I loved that couple the most because of her character (and not her acting) and her ROMANTIC PAIR. God, he’s great.
        As for her…urgh…She’s so deadish..lol

  2. DayDreamer

    *sigh* I’m with you….I don’t want to see a time-traveling drama. :/

  3. rearwindow

I’m sorry, I tuned everything out after “Lee Jin-wook.”

He is on another plane of hotness. His level of hotness should be considered a deadly weapon.

    • 3.1 jomo

      LOL True

I think THIS director understands how to harness the hot, too. He didn’t just get the kissing right, and BOY! did he, but the eye contact, the closeness, the breathless dialog.

It may feel familiar with the time traveler schtick, but that doesn’t mean it won’t give us the feels again.

      • 3.1.1 rearwindow

OMG yes, and LJW SURE knows how to kiss. Not that I, um, watched I Need Romance for the makeouts or anything. Ha ha ha! Heavens no.

I actually haven’t finished a time travel drama yet. Here’s hoping this’ll be the one!

        • rearwindow

And by “I Need Romance,” I of course meant “I Need Lee Jin-wook…er…ROMANCE 2012.” Gah, these dramas and their “Let’s add the year to the title! That’ll TOTALLY distinguish it from the original!”

    • 3.2 Mrembo

I am so with you on Lee Jin-wook’s level of hotness, sigh. And he is age appropriate for me ๐Ÿ˜‰ Didn’t realize Jo Yoon-hee was in “Lie to me” as the second lead – I guess she was that bad (everything was that bad)? But I looooved her in “You who rolled in unexpectedly!” These two could be so awesome together, but only if the romance is not dialed back. *fingers crossed for some hot romance/kisses, etc.*

      • 3.2.1 rearwindow

I don’t remember her at all from Lie to Me either! I don’t even remember a female character aside from Eun Hye’s frenemy. It’s like LTM has been sucked into the “WTF drama” vortex in my mind.

I haven’t heard of You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly. Is it good? (I mean, clearly it’s pretty good if you loved her in it…)

    • 3.3 JoAnne

I am ready for some more Lee Jin Wook in my life. Time travel doesn’t seem too steep a price to pay. A gummi baby brain tumor does, potentially…but I’m willing to dicker on even that.

      • 3.3.1 rearwindow

Hahaha! Such is the power of LJW that he can even make gummi baby brain tumors acceptable.

I’m hoping the main downside of his time traveling will be hot flashes, so he has to walk around shirtless all the time.

    • 3.4 Shukmeister

“Court Lady”? I vote for a sports theme – who wants to see Lee Jin-wook in tennis whites and tank tops?! [waving hands frantically] 15-LoveThatGuy

      • 3.4.1 rearwindow

YES to everything you just said.

    • 3.5 maria

i know right? there’s something about a new drama…? after “Lee Jin Wook”, my mind kind of goes “guuuuuuuuH” and i don’t recover. i LOVE him, i’m literally down for anything and everything Lee Jin Wook. it doesn’t help my obssession any that his best friends are in.sane. hot as well =. GUUUUUUH

      • 3.5.1 rearwindow

        Who are his best friends?

        • jomo

Lee Dong Wook, for sure. Boom? Kim Jae Won?

          • canxi

            and Kim Ji Suk!

          • rearwindow

            OMG. Hotness overload dot com.

  4. MsB

Never seen either before (barely remember him in Lie to Me) and Unexpectedly You is on my watch list but I hear you about time travel, its time to change to another genre for 2013!!

  5. Mystisith

On one hand, time travelling drama: *SIGHHHHH*.
On the other hand: I’m terribly shallow and that pic of LJW is smoking hot. GF, you owe me a new screen: Mine just melted.
I wonder if the action will take place mostly in the present (I prefer that version and that’s the feeling I got here) or in the old days.
I think tvN was lucky and smart with QIHM: Lucky to have such a couple cast. Smart enough to capitalize on it. If I go back to that drama, the story wasn’t that interesting honestly but the chemistry was the strong point of the show.

  6. Carole McDonnell

I don’t mind another time travelling drama. Just finished reading Jade Devereux’s classic romance “A knight in Shining Armor,” which has two time travellers — a knight who comes from the past to the present, and the woman he loves who travels back to Elizabethan time with him as he clears his name against the charge of treason. And IMMEDIATELY, I told myself, “Gotta see Queen In Hyun’s Man again.” I have the time-travel jones that bad. So, between QIHM and Faith, whether folks go back and come forward, I am on that travel train…or chariot..or palanquin…or whatever it’s called. Waiting in anticipation.

    • 6.1 Mrs_d

I read that as well! I loved that book too… must read again! Gives me some nostalgia about when I used to watch QIHM on Solive. Ahh I miss Kim Boong Do!

      • 6.1.1 Carole McDonnell

Nicholas Stafford vs Kim Boong Do? Decisions, decisions. I think I like Kim Boong Do just a tad bit more.

        • skelly

Me too. Frankly, there aren’t many romance heroes as epic as Kim Boong Do – nearly all of them have some level of jerkitude to them, to keep the conflict level up.

I think this news calls for yet another re-watch of QIHM…!

    • 6.2 D

you mentioned ‘Jude Deveraux’ so i just have to delurk ๐Ÿ™‚ she’s one of my favourite authoress, i remember reading AKISA years ago (borrowed from a friend) tho tbh I’m not fond of time travel theme in my reading materials (other than recap of dramas i’m not watching).
Back to the drama, ILUBLEEJINWOOK so it doesn’t matter even if it’s so 2012. I’ve never seen him in a hanbok before.

      • 6.2.1 Carole McDonnell

I love any man in a hanbok. I do wonder how they can do those great martial arts moves while wearing hanboks and their super aristocratic hats …but dang! They look so cute and noble.

    • 6.3 Gee

I love that book! One of the most memorable out of the many romance books I’ve read.. Jude Devereux is one of my favourite authors..
And I would watch Court Lady just for Lee Jin Wook even though time-travel’s been done one too many times this year..

  7. Fab

    Already forgotten…

  8. Ash

Man, tvN, why you gotta build a girl’s hopes like that and then fizzle them right back out? I’m on board with the creative team and the Lee Jin-wook (sigh, Lee Jin-wook, sigh), but everyone and their mother was filming a time travel drama this year. I don’t even dislike it as a trope/genre; I’m just burnt out at this point.

  9. John

Since the court is involved, someone will probably have to prevent a terrible event from happening or else prevent an evil person from doing an evil deed.

I’ll wait and see. Perhaps they can pull it off.

  10. 10 kopytko

To hope or not to hope?
I am all for a drama with Lee Jin Wook. But I have never been able to watch a historical (or simply set in the distant past) from the beginning to the end. Even colourful hanboks and cute actors (not even LMH) cannot keep me watching… So please, make it some kind of metaphore or give us a hint in the first episode, and let it be a contemporary drama…

  11. 11 rainbow

ya……bored of time travelling theme ๐Ÿ™

  12. 12 miss minho

hi. this totally unrelated but if anybody wants to chat with me about kdramas IM me on yahoo messenger (sillystuffgirl). i’m so sick of not having any kdrama fans to gush to. i recently finished watching to the beautiful you and was so saddened by the disappointment of it and i even quit watching faith out utter despair at my poor minho’s fate….i just started the drama school….anyone who wants to chat with me let know

    • 12.1 leila

hi. i’ll IM you. can’t wait to discuss everything from Lee Min Ho to kimchi

    • 12.2 Mrs_d

I’ll IM you too! I need more drama friends to gush to and gush with!

      • 12.2.1 miss minho

YAY Love you guys! can’t wait I love Min Ho AND kimchi sooo much! they’re both yummy

        • miss minho

hm, I checed my Yahoo messenger and didn’t see any requests. If you guys can’t contact me there you can also add me on facebook: just search Kash Lee Min Ho

  13. 13 nomu nomu nomu

Lets not jump the gun here. Other than time traveling, there wasn’t any information at all regarding the premise (it might be a re-thread, it might be not).

At this point, I’m not in or out. I’ll wait for more info. I don’t like to make snap judgment based on one tiny piece of information.

    • 13.1 5 hearts

i love your username first off and second I totally agree. I’m so not gonna get excited…yet. too many recent disappointments

    • 13.2 Rachael

Same here. I need more info before I decide if this is a yea or nay since I’m not tired of time-travel and I’m on board with what’s offered so far. I am see-sawing on what gender and time period I’d like to see them hopping between. Also, I can see why they’re doing some re-tread with this content as it’s riskier compared to trendies or rom-coms as it’s outside that established comfort (and rating zone) for them. I think if this also goes well they may get a little more experimental within the genres used. Otherwise, crossing fingers for great chemistry once again, even if it’s focus isn’t a rom com. Can really help things out hehe!

  14. 14 leila

this looks like it’ll be fun!

  15. 15 Rashell

Awww…I squeed initially and then kind of felt deflated. I could maybe handle a re-tread of the time travel for the millionth time, but cutting back the romance? With Lee Jin Wook as lead? NOOOOOO!

However this team has pretty much proven that they’re awesome, so I’m going to be optimistic. And if Lee Jin Wook confirms, I’m in no matter what. He’s yummy.

  16. 16 canxi

I’m in. I’m behind this creative team and ya know, I have to support my boyfriend Lee Jin Wook in his career choices (MINE!). Lol.

Since, I didn’t watch all of 2012 time travel dramas (I think I only checked out 3 of them–does Padam Padam count because if so, 4) I’m OK with the theme. But that may just be because I’m really interested in the space-time continuum and time travel and how people interpret it,hahaha.

    Plus. LEE.JIN.WOOK. Aigoo.

  17. 17 Bakachild

    -sigh- more time-traveling.
I’ll keep waiting for more updates before I decide whether I want to watch it or not. I probably will because it seems to be a good writing team. Here’s hoping!

  18. 18 browncoat_78

Funny, I’m just re-watching Queen In Hyun’s Man right now and thinking to myself: Man, that’s some great writing. I wonder what else this writer has done? How weird is that?! So this is super happy news to me! Really, I’ve seen a lot of time traveling shows and movies from the West and now from Korea, and the way Kim Boong Do is written is just the best and most believable I’ve ever seen. His character is so refreshing and realistic compared to the ridiculousness of most time traveling characters. So, YIPPEE for the Queen In Hyun’s Man creators (and TVN)!

  19. 19 Meeyeong

Isn’t it just Nine? It even says in the article that the story is closer to the present.

  20. 20 jomo

Time travel is my absolute favorite premise for novels, films, TV commercials, anything.

LJW is so nice to look at. I am slightly worried about what they will do with his hair…

Don’t forget this is the same director as Guyliner Prosecutor the First as well as QIHM.
That means more cuts, only 45 mins each episode, atypical story-telling, interesting camera angles and lots of skinship!

I am on boarder than I have ever been on board.

    • 20.1 Mystisith

And suddenly my faith is restored… ๐Ÿ™‚

      • 20.1.1 jomo

      • 20.1.2 skelly

That sounds suspiciously like a pun or wordplay, Mysti…

        • Mystisith

*open ending*… You can interpret this as you like. ๐Ÿ™‚
PS: Glad to see than most commenters still have their sense of humor.

    • 20.2 canxi

I agree jomo! I also really love time-travel as a theme. And it’s on tVN, so I know they won’t hold back when it comes to awesomeness.

  21. 21 laraffinee

Queen Inhyun’s Man was my favorite drama of this past year! I love the time travel theme and am NOT tired of it. I am all for another good story with that theme. That production team was wonderful. I will be watching!

  22. 22 myra

talking about future dramas, does anyone know what drama will follow School on KBS? I’m really curious…

    • 22.1 Mystisith

I think it’s IRIS 2. Not sure tho.

      • 22.1.1 nomu nomu nomu

IRIS 2 will be a Wed/Thurs drama starting Feb. 13 (School, is Mon/Tues)

      • 22.1.2 SprinkledPink

Nope. Iris 2 is replacing Jeon Woo-Chi.

        • nomu nomu nomu

yes, I know. That is why I said IRIS 2 is Wed/Thurs drama. The current wed/thurs drama of KBS is Jeon Woo-chi thus IRIS 2 on Feb. 13.

I also said School is a Mon/Tues drama, but I did not know the replacement, Only that City Conquest was no longer it.

        • nomu nomu nomu

          Hi SprinkledPink

My apologies, I misread the reply numbering.
please disregard my reply to you.

    • 22.2 nomu nomu nomu

It was suppose to be City Conquest but…

    • 22.3 SprinkledPink

According to MisterX’s blog, Ad Genius is replacing School.

      • 22.3.1 canxi

Is that another re-make of an old 90’s K-drama??

  23. 23 pogo

I’m on board for this <3

  24. 24 Anvesha

I agree.. Why time travel? They can do great and I want to watch something different from them.

I didn’t know the girl was in Lie to Me.tarotally didn’t recognize her later in the hit drama.

    • 24.1 Annie

Time travel dramas have the ratings potential of a sageuk + PPL potential of a modern drama. It’s genius, really, from a marketing perspective.

  25. 25 iviih

    I’m in.

I loved and hated him on I need romance 2 and I loved QIHM.

I don’t get why people get so sick of time traveling dramas.

I mean, still better than fashion dramas or school dramas that aren’t done well… (TTBY /DH2 )

  26. 26 IzOcha

Maybe it will be a crazy court room drama? A current period lawyer trying to avenge false racketeering charges laid against her future man who fell in the time hole to the present and dragged her forward? Like in Terminator with less robots? This will force her to have several training montages resulting in bloody noses. Plus huge amounts of product placement opportunity, right? Maybe it will be a steam punk future with shiny shiny metal costumes?

    Sigh, . . . a girl can dream, right?

    • 26.1 Mystisith

I was thinking about something… Nevermind. Great minds think alike. ^^

  27. 27 Taber

I love QIhm and I wouldn’t care for the time travel theme but the lead actor Lee Jin-wook I fine very boring.

  28. 28 tapioca pearl

Lee Jin-wook is all I need to watch a drama. I watched Myung-wol the Spy against my better judgment just to see him. And QIHM was the only time-traveling drama I watched, and since I really enjoyed that drama, I don’t mind another time-traveling one. At least it’s doing something different with the time-traveling staying in the past. (And it’s Lee Jin-wook! I need to see MORE of him!)

    • 28.1 sally_b

      @tapioca pearl –
RE: Lee Jin-wook is all I need to watch a drama.

truer words were never said. (Friends – you & I – with like minds) ๐Ÿ˜‰

  29. 29 ravens_nest

I’m a giant sci-fi geek so I don’t mind another time-travelling premise as long as it showcases a new aspect of it in a logical manner.

Though Queen In Hyun’s Man faltered a bit at the end and it required the audience to somewhat infer information to make the resolution logical, that drama remained the most consistent and understandable of them all this past year.

As a Whovian, I can tell you that time-travel is a broader premise than one might expect with many permutations available for exploration.

  30. 30 Christy

    Been there, done that.

  31. 31 tarianant

    QIHM team + Lee Jin-wook = a must-see

  32. 32 Innit

I loooooved Queen InHyun’s Man….. so I’m willing to welcome “Court Lady” with an open mind…. Queen InHyun’s story was told at a fresh perspective. Hopefully, Court Lady will be equally fresh…..

  33. 33 Annie

I like Lee Jin Wook for ahem, less than appropriate reasons but I’m not enthused about Jo Yoon Hee. I thought she made a charming pair with Lee Hee Joon in MHGAF but she doesn’t exactly scream ‘Palace Maiden’ to me. If Park Ha Sun weren’t doing Gangnam Style (which is sure to be a clunker), I could totally see her doing this role.

    • 33.1 canxi

Well, we don’t know what roles they’ll be playing, or if they’re even confirmed yet, so don’t worry too much about that.

      • 33.1.1 Annie

        … thanks for the reassurance?

        • canxi

Well I mean she may not be the Palace Maiden, so you shouldn’t worry about it right now. Like we get there when we get there and then we see how it goes because it may be awesome, lol. You never know.

  34. 34 bd

I thoroughly enjoyed INR2102 (definitely one of the better romcoms that I have seen); the 1st INR didn’t interest me much.

  35. 35 piggy68gal

I was pretty surprised when I first heard of the news that QIHM’s team will be doing another time-travel drama…but then I am still looking forward to it. After all, the only time-travel drama I have seen thus far is QIHM. So there. ๐Ÿ™‚
And I am liking the leads! Lee Jin Wook is attractive. I haven’t seen any of his previous works though. And Jo Yoon Hee! I watched cuts of her and the other guy in You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly, and I totally loved the couple. So sweet! And she looked so cute with the short hair~

  36. 36 ladida

Sign me the hell up because I am ready for this show like woah.

  37. 37 asianromance

Maybe they’ll take a different spin on time travel. Like maybe one modern-day character and one-Joseon-day character time-travel to the period when the Japanese occupation of Korea happened. Then it could be some sort of Queen In-hyun/Gaksital crossover!

I’m pretty tired of time travel…but Lee Jin Wook……!

  38. 38 Toya

Well you never know, they might alter reality AND make it time travel. Maybe she is a court lady of the current king who is sent back in time to keep the timeline alternate-history correct?

    • 38.1 Toya

Now I wanna write that story. **copyrighted**

  39. 39 k-soup

I like sageuk! but I’m afraid that it will have a drawback

  40. 40 sally_b

    Lee Jin-wook.

    …in a Hanbok
    out of a Hanbok

    Mane of Glory
    or…completely shaven

    Time travel
    or…sitting on a couch reading

    I’m *IN*. gimme that.

  41. 41 Stephanie

hmm jo yoon hee is under my boring actresses list…. sigh, not very good.

  42. 42 Lovely DM

I was hoping that this team would make another drama/romance with a different premise. Actually if they had made a time travel drama heavier on the romance/drama than the time travel then I might be tempted to watch.

But given that they said it will be lighter on the romance, and I am already fed up with the time travel theme, so basically there’s nothing here that has me interested in the least. So for me, it’s a pass.

On another note: I’m really looking forward to Pretty Boy Next Door, this sounds like it could be a very good romance/drama, and it has an interesting premise.

  43. 43 LoonyLizard

Correction: The sting of time-traveling as a plot device started in 2011 with Padam Padam. Granted, Kang-Chil only travels back in time by a month at most, but it’s still time travel. Personally, I think Padam Padam is the absolute best of the lot, but then, I’m also of the opinion that it’s the finest series produced anywhere in the world, ever. And that’s coming from a 42-year-old professional critic.

    • 43.1 LoonyLizard

      *The string…

    • 43.2 canxi

I also thought Padam Padam was the best (= It’s my favorite time-travel drama. That wasn’t all about time travel! lol.

  44. 44 am

I actually want to watch it probably because I only watched one time traveling drama this year. hehe

Maybe the girl is the time traveler this time around and the guy travels to the past.

  45. 45 annnsow

I don’t like Time Traveling dramas.
But as long as Jin Wook is in it…
I’ll watch it. I love this actor. He’s not perfect but he played enough good scenes in his career for me to trust him. And yeah, he is incredibly hot.

  46. 46 ab

i wish whoever wrote this post would look back on it and do a follow up cos the next drama they did was NINE which was abso-fucking-lutely fantastic ๐Ÿ™‚
