Queen Inhyun’s Man team preps new drama for tvN

Well that was fast. If it’s one thing tvN knows, it’s how to brand a hot thing — in this case it’s the PD-writer combo behind this year’s hit time-traveling romance Queen Inhyun’s Man, director Kim Byung-soo and writer Song Jae-jung. The band is back together for a follow-up drama slated for the new year called Court Lady, and they’re currently courting Lee Jin-wook (I Need Romance 2012) and Jo Yoon-hee (You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly) to play the leads.

It’s kind of a mixed bag of news though. On the one hand, I really liked Inhyun and was thrilled to hear that the same team was doing a new drama for tvN. On the other hand, it’s apparently going to be another time-traveling drama. Oy. Not only is that retreading the same narrative ground for the same creative team, I am sick to death of that theme. It’s so 2012. Inhyun was certainly the best of the time travelers this year, but shouldn’t we move forward, and on to whatever 2013’s drama-fad-to-be is?

Both Lee Jin-wook and Jo Yoon-hee are still considering the drama, so it’s not a done deal for the actors. I would’ve groaned at the Jo Yoon-hee casting if I had never seen her in the weekend drama You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly, because before that, she was just that super bland second lead in Lie to Me. But then she chopped off all her hair and played the tomboy middle daughter in that hit drama, and improved her screen presence a great deal.

Court Lady will feature another time traveling character, though these two time periods will reportedly be closer together. Still, if the title refers to a palace maiden, there has to be king in a palace, so we’re talking late Joseon at least. No word yet on which of the characters is the one who travels to the other time. They promise one big departure from Inhyun though — this drama will be less about the romance, and will feature a different kind of story. Hm. Can I trade the time travel for the romance?

The thing is, I’m so behind this creative team, and I’m doubly behind them doing another drama for tvN. But another drama with the same premise makes me sad. Because they’re capable of awesome, so why not let them do something new and amazing? This is where I think the Oh Boy series has the franchising done right — loose idea of target audience and flower boy theme, but no repeating of central premise from drama to drama. Instead they’re doing what tvN tried with I Need Romance, which is the version of branding that quite didn’t work for me — same drama, weaker version. I hope there’s enough to differentiate Court Lady from Inhyun, because I want this team to do well and keep making good dramas.

Court Lady will follow Flower Boy Next Door, and premiere in March.

I felt like the girl from "unexpected you" wasn't that great at acting. It was like..she didn't really have to do a lot of work. In fact, I think that I loved that couple the most because of her character (and not her acting) and her ROMANTIC PAIR. God, he's great.
As for her...urgh...She's so deadish..lol

I'm sorry, I tuned everything out after "Lee Jin-wook."

He is on another plane of hotness. His level of hotness should be considered a deadly weapon.

LOL True

I think THIS director understands how to harness the hot, too. He didn't just get the kissing right, and BOY! did he, but the eye contact, the closeness, the breathless dialog.

It may feel familiar with the time traveler schtick, but that doesn't mean it won't give us the feels again.

OMG yes, and LJW SURE knows how to kiss. Not that I, um, watched I Need Romance for the makeouts or anything. Ha ha ha! Heavens no.

I actually haven't finished a time travel drama yet. Here's hoping this'll be the one!

And by "I Need Romance," I of course meant "I Need Lee Jin-wook...er...ROMANCE 2012." Gah, these dramas and their "Let's add the year to the title! That'll TOTALLY distinguish it from the original!"

I am so with you on Lee Jin-wook's level of hotness, sigh. And he is age appropriate for me ;) Didn't realize Jo Yoon-hee was in "Lie to me" as the second lead - I guess she was that bad (everything was that bad)? But I looooved her in "You who rolled in unexpectedly!" These two could be so awesome together, but only if the romance is not dialed back. *fingers crossed for some hot romance/kisses, etc.*

I don't remember her at all from Lie to Me either! I don't even remember a female character aside from Eun Hye's frenemy. It's like LTM has been sucked into the "WTF drama" vortex in my mind.

I haven't heard of You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly. Is it good? (I mean, clearly it's pretty good if you loved her in it...)

I am ready for some more Lee Jin Wook in my life. Time travel doesn't seem too steep a price to pay. A gummi baby brain tumor does, potentially...but I'm willing to dicker on even that.

Hahaha! Such is the power of LJW that he can even make gummi baby brain tumors acceptable.

I'm hoping the main downside of his time traveling will be hot flashes, so he has to walk around shirtless all the time.

On one hand, time travelling drama: *SIGHHHHH*.
On the other hand: I'm terribly shallow and that pic of LJW is smoking hot. GF, you owe me a new screen: Mine just melted.
I wonder if the action will take place mostly in the present (I prefer that version and that's the feeling I got here) or in the old days.
I think tvN was lucky and smart with QIHM: Lucky to have such a couple cast. Smart enough to capitalize on it. If I go back to that drama, the story wasn't that interesting honestly but the chemistry was the strong point of the show.

I don't mind another time travelling drama. Just finished reading Jade Devereux's classic romance "A knight in Shining Armor," which has two time travellers -- a knight who comes from the past to the present, and the woman he loves who travels back to Elizabethan time with him as he clears his name against the charge of treason. And IMMEDIATELY, I told myself, "Gotta see Queen In Hyun's Man again." I have the time-travel jones that bad. So, between QIHM and Faith, whether folks go back and come forward, I am on that travel train...or chariot..or palanquin...or whatever it's called. Waiting in anticipation.

Back to the drama, ILUBLEEJINWOOK so it doesn't matter even if it's so 2012. I've never seen him in a hanbok before.

Man, tvN, why you gotta build a girl's hopes like that and then fizzle them right back out? I'm on board with the creative team and the Lee Jin-wook (sigh, Lee Jin-wook, sigh), but everyone and their mother was filming a time travel drama this year. I don't even dislike it as a trope/genre; I'm just burnt out at this point.

I am all for a drama with Lee Jin Wook. But I have never been able to watch a historical (or simply set in the distant past) from the beginning to the end. Even colourful hanboks and cute actors (not even LMH) cannot keep me watching... So please, make it some kind of metaphore or give us a hint in the first episode, and let it be a contemporary drama...

Same here. I need more info before I decide if this is a yea or nay since I'm not tired of time-travel and I'm on board with what's offered so far. I am see-sawing on what gender and time period I'd like to see them hopping between. Also, I can see why they're doing some re-tread with this content as it's riskier compared to trendies or rom-coms as it's outside that established comfort (and rating zone) for them. I think if this also goes well they may get a little more experimental within the genres used. Otherwise, crossing fingers for great chemistry once again, even if it's focus isn't a rom com. Can really help things out hehe!

So this is super happy news to me! Really, I've seen a lot of time traveling shows and movies from the West and now from Korea, and the way Kim Boong Do is written is just the best and most believable I've ever seen. His character is so refreshing and realistic compared to the ridiculousness of most time traveling characters. So, YIPPEE for the Queen In Hyun's Man creators (and TVN)!

LJW is so nice to look at. I am slightly worried about what they will do with his hair...

Don't forget this is the same director as Guyliner Prosecutor the First as well as QIHM.
That means more cuts, only 45 mins each episode, atypical story-telling, interesting camera angles and lots of skinship!

I am on boarder than I have ever been on board.

Maybe it will be a crazy court room drama? A current period lawyer trying to avenge false racketeering charges laid against her future man who fell in the time hole to the present and dragged her forward? Like in Terminator with less robots? This will force her to have several training montages resulting in bloody noses. Plus huge amounts of product placement opportunity, right? Maybe it will be a steam punk future with shiny shiny metal costumes?

Sigh, . . . a girl can dream, right?

I'm a giant sci-fi geek so I don't mind another time-travelling premise as long as it showcases a new aspect of it in a logical manner.

Though Queen In Hyun's Man faltered a bit at the end and it required the audience to somewhat infer information to make the resolution logical, that drama remained the most consistent and understandable of them all this past year.

As a Whovian, I can tell you that time-travel is a broader premise than one might expect with many permutations available for exploration.

I thought she made a charming pair with Lee Hee Joon in MHGAF but she doesn't exactly scream 'Palace Maiden' to me. Correction: The sting of time-traveling as a plot device started in 2011 with Padam Padam. Granted, Kang-Chil only travels back in time by a month at most, but it's still time travel. Personally, I think Padam Padam is the absolute best of the lot, but then, I'm also of the opinion that it's the finest series produced anywhere in the world, ever.
