Go Hyun-jung in talks to headline new drama

It’s been three years since Go Hyun-jung last stopped by dramaland, by way of Daemul and Queen Seon-deok — she’s had an interesting detour as a talk show host, and is now set to return where I think she does best. She’s reportedly in talks to star as a teacher in the new drama Queen’s Classroom. (Though I suppose Queen’s Class leaves a little more room for title puns?) Also, are teachers going to be the new time travelers this year?

The new MBC drama is planning to air on Wednesdays/Thursdays starting in June, and will be helmed by PD Lee Dong-yoon of Feast of the Gods. It’ll be a remake of a Japanese drama of the same name, about a cold and self-righteous teacher who takes a new position at an elementary school.

I don’t know the source drama, but the implication is that she goes from professor/lecturer to grade-school teacher — something that she’d initially consider to be beneath her, but will ultimately make her a far better teacher. Her character hides a scar underneath her rigid exterior, naturally, which will be uncovered in the course of the drama.

It’s described as a unique school-centric story, which I’d be willing to entertain, save for the drama called SCHOOL, airing right now. Why not just be transparent and say you’re riding on School 2013′s success, since I don’t think anyone would argue that there are too many heartwarming dramas about teachers and students out there in the world. The more the merrier.

Queen’s Classroom is planning for a June premiere on MBC.

The plot doesn't sound very interesting to be very honest :(

I'm not familiar with the source material but Queen's classroom aounds interesting (and different) to me.

Instead of the usual Earnest Teacher reaching out and converting Wayward Students one by one, looks like the Teacher is going to be the distant one in this drama. And the kids are the ones who will be doing the cracking of that cold exterior to get to teach's marshmallow heart.

Come on get her to act as a modern female version of Botchan will be far more interesting than this queen stuff. Sound so boring. To add spice, make her the mistress of Natsume Sōseki, that will be fun!! :P

Yeah... sounds like boring storyline, I would prefer the remake of GTO or Gokusen though...

That got me interested in the Japanese version and googled it (Jyoou no Kyoushitsu). Of course I'm expecting the original to be better again so I'm gonna watch that. Based on description of the teacher, the role would suit Go Hyun-jung. She's got that Miss Minchin vibe, haha.

Anyway, it would be interesting since it's set up in grade school and so I'm looking forward to those who'll be cast as her students.

MUKYAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH !!!!!!! ULTIMATE NEWS !!!
I freaking love, adore, worship this little gem of a drama!
I think she's a wonderful choice as an actress, because it's gonna be a tough job to succeed to the awesomeness of Amami Yuki.
Just a note: Jyoou no Kyoushitsu (The Queen's Classroom) is FAR from being a heartwarming ride. The teacher is rigid as hell (or ice?) and makes a point to break her students...utlimately for their own good, but still.

GAH, can't wait, can't wait already *crosses off one day*

I've also seen this drama. It was unsettling to watch at times, but it was definitely captivating. I think she's perfect for this remake.

MTE. If I had to name someone else for the mysterious/graceful/Evil Queen Akutsu Maya. May I dare hope that they'll also show a dance version for the ending? I'd love to see Go Hyun-jung set the playground on fire ^^

For those who want a peek at the japanese version, here's the closing credits.

I was so captivated by this drama, I think I watched it in 2 days. Admittedly, most of that urge was to find out what the HELL was Akatsu-sensei's deal, but still. I hope she's as good as Amami Yuki was!

Maybe I'm just biased, but I definitely think GHJ is the perfect fit for the "teacher-from-hell-but-not-really". Your description for the drama was perfect: unsettling, but captivating. Made me cry and I got affected cause I really hate bullying.

Ditto... after her role in Queen Seon-Deok, GHJ is an ideal choice for the teacher. I watched the Japanese version and it was really different from the usual "teacher drama." Not sure if the Korean version will stay loyal to the original storyline, but I think it has potential to be a great drama. - especially since they usually have bigger budgets for casting and osts.

No, actually I'm glad you yelled, since otherwise I wouldn't have known about the dorama being awesome and all (though when I'm going to have to time to check it out I don't know).

I haven't yet managed watching any of the new doramas yet either, it's only been K-stuff this week (School 2013 and Flower Boy Next Door). Waiting on the last ep of Priceless to be subbed (didn't realise that one was only 9 episodes!).

Sorry to break it to you. There won't be one. At least, if they stick to the original source.
But the story is so great, and rife with so many (societal) issues that you won't even notice it. I swear!

Even if Japan is over love stories, Korea definitely isn't. I'd bet good money that they're going to insert some silly tangential love line just for kicks.

Korea will work a love story into this. The Kpublic demands it.

I'm certainly not against a good love story, but I'm afraid it'd would only dilute the real theme just for the sake of romance. That would be too bad. I'd take a meaningful and realistic narrative over fanservice any day...
If it was a cable drama, I would think differently though.

0

I pray there is also no demand for incurable disease or amnesia anywhere in the storyline...

0

It's Kdrama of course we'll have a male lead, a love line.

And don't expect it to follow the original story. The only kdrama that closely follows the original story IMO was that one that propelled Lee Min HOT to stardom.

I loved the Japanese version with Matsushima Nanako (if you don't know her, think Lee Young Ae or Kim Nam Joo, perhaps more Kim Nam Joo since she's still active and has an actor as a husband).

Hopefully this won't flop :)

Yeah, I'm not getting good vibes at all. The J-drama was freakin' AWESOMESAUCE and gave me the shivers at the same time. I don't see the remake having the same dark flavor, especially if they start casting idols right and left for this. Prove me wrong, people!

These are elementary kids though, so I'm not sure if there are idols out there young enough to be fasted. I don't think the storyline would work with older kids. The storyline, if I'm remembering correctly, was very powerful cause we see this power-tripping kids, then the teacher from hell enters to rein them in.

Just as a p.s. but is Go Hyun Jung gorgeous in this picture or what? I used to be confused when people described her as beautiful because I always thought her face looked so swollen but I can definitely see what they mean in this pic. Luminous!

Having seen so, so many gorgeous actresses in K-drama land over the years, I, too, was rather non-plussed when I heard people speak of Go Hyun Jung's beauty. Then I checked out the masterpiece that is 'Sandglass' (she was 24 at the time) and her magnificance hit me right between the eyes. :) Still pictures rarely do a person justice. It is when we are animated that all of the sides of a person's allure become magnified...

For the first time i'm actually excited for another Japanese remake 'cause i think this one can work.

Watch them! No, seriously, I LOVE THIS WOMAN!

My fav dramas from her are "Queen Seon Duk," "What's Up, Fox?," and "H.I.T." in that order.

She was also the lead female in "Sandglass," arguably THE most famous drama in Korean television history. At one point it clocked in over 60% viewer ratings. (I'm about to start it soon to really make my own opinion about that.)

I'd love to see a cameo from Yoo Seung Ho in this drama ... as the kid from hell - at 15 years old he played Kim Chun CHu and he was amazing as teenage prince going against Mishil and his own auntie(QSD) Too bad that YSH is going to the army.

If they insert a love line .... errrmm Kim Nam Gil would be interesting to be seen as lover (he played her son before, but their interaction in QSD was the Oedipian type - insert some Freud here)

If anyone wants some "spoilers" about how dark and intensive the original "Jouou no kyoushitsu" was, then check out this clip...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hirc8zQvev4

SCHOOL 2013 is great, and quite "realistic", but Queen's classroom may exceed that realistic level by a notch.
Not sure how the Korean drama producers are gonna remake this one, but I will not like it if they censor out depictions or problems just because the drama will be broadcast on a big channel.
But it would be a nice idea to move the setting into secondary school, so that we can gather all of our much loved child actors/actresses in one awesome class haha. I can count Kim Yoo Jung, Kim So Hyun, Yeo Jin Gu, Park Ji Bin, Park Gun Tae, Seo Shin Ae, etc...are among 13-16yr old range.

And Amami Yuki is legendary, with immense charisma! So hopefully Go Hyun Jung will be able to do the same.

I second your motion to include members from this talented group of young actors/actresses! Personally, really miss seeing Seo Shin Ae who was, once again, outstanding in early 2012's KBS Drama Special, 'Save Our School' (S.0.S.). :)

P.S. Kim Sae-ron is currently "out of work" and she and her sister, Ah-ron might also be nice to have along for the ride...

i think Kim Yoo Jung is the most likely fit because of her age, and the girl from thank you. She recently did a drama special with similar themes and she really gets you in the gut. Another actress whose name i can never remember is the other little girl from high kick through the roof. The girl from thank you has worked with both of these other girls and they would have great chemistry. I am really holding my breath for this one. I disagree though that this should be set in a highschool, the impact of the dorama was that it was preteens. If they were to do it in a highschool it would be a little more similar to the dorama "Life".

So, it's a drama with no real plot, therefore it's going to be filled with psychological introspections, self discovery journeys and other existentialist crap. Too bad! Because I will always remember Go Hyun Jung as the string pulling, back stabbing, maneuvering and manipulating Mishil! I guess what goes up, must come down.

Wow!,

This sounds really interested, but with remakes it's either a hit or miss.

Queen's Classroom, the japanese version, was an amazing japanese drama, and the tone of it was quite dark, compared to other dramas that were airing at the time (school setting dramas). It was also a great look into japanese society and how testing and getting into top schools were so important, and how the japanese school system is.

I'm wondering how this will translate into the Korean Drama, for those who know, is the Korean school system similar to Japanese ? where you have to take entrance exams, in order to go to high school ?

Gaaah, I'm so freaking happy and sad about this. I loved this dorama and had nightmares for weeks after watching it. I think Go will do a great job but the students matter too. I hope the little girl from Ajusshi plays the Shida Mirai character cus that would pack a punch. I almost wish they would go with the length of dorama or at least only 12 episodes, dragging it on kinda loses the hard impact imo. Still can't wait! Thank you for the news. If you haven't watched the dorama, i suggest you do, it will change your perspective.
