Leads cast for rom-com All About My Romance

SBS’s upcoming romantic-comedy drama series All About My Romance has settled upon its leads, and while that means Im Soo-jung is out (having considered the role), we do have confirmation that Shin Ha-kyun (Brain) will be taking the show after all. Joining him as the leading lady is Han Hye-jin (Thorn Birds, Syndrome).

The project is an opposites-attract romance set in the world of politics, which isn’t a milieu that automatically screams love and laughs. But that’s exactly what this writer-PD duo, who produced Protect the Boss together, hope to do by drawing parallels between the political arena and the romantic. Not only will our leads be total opposites in personality and ideology, but also political parties. Ooh. That… could get dangerous.

Shin Ha-kyun’s character is Kim Soo-young, a former judge and a newly elected parliamentarian belonging to the conservative New Korea Party. Confident and prickly in nature, as a judge he hated being pressured by superior forces and thus entered politics… ’cause you know there’s no pressure there or anything. As a new assemblyman, Kim Soo-young finds himself constantly crossing paths (and clashing) with another new parliamentarian, Noh Min-young, of the Green Progressive Party.

Noh Min-young entered politics after the death of her older sister, who was a strong presidential candidate. So when all that crackling romantic tension with Kim Soo-young leads to actual dating, she’s careful to keep the relationship a secret, since she’s already under the scrutiny of the opposing party and, oh yeah, the whole nation. Ha, I bet the upstanding judge isn’t used to being anybody’s dirty little secret.

So this could be cute, and funny, and quite a bit different from what we’ve been seeing in dramaland. Maybe, if done well to make the most of its potential—which is always a big if. I like the concept and could see it making for light humor and sweet romance, as well as being able to swing more serious when needed. Sort of like West Wing meets City Hall. (I’m also thinking fondly of the cracked-out secret congresswoman romance in 30 Rock, although that level of zaniness is too much to hope for in a K-drama, I suppose.) And since politics is already a pretty high-stakes arena, my big hope is that the drama won’t need to reach into that grab bag of standard angsty melo tricks to draw out the big dramatics. *crosses fingers*

All About My Romance is wrapping up its casting and plans to begin production soon, for an April premiere.

I have no doubt about Shin Ha Kyun's humorous side and acting ability, but I am wondering how good he can form a chemistry with Han Hye Jin.

HHJ is a good actress, but seems to act independently and could not really form much chemistry with her counter part. That's the reason, she never won any best couple award in her acting career. (Please correct me, if I am wrong).

In Jumong, Jejeongwon, Thorn Bird, and Fighting Sansoom, she seems to be always acting on her own and independently, rather than bringing out the chemistry between her and her lead actor.

Deep down, as I observed Healing Camp and KBS Drama Awards in 2011, I believe she is a machiavelli, and this woman politician role should fit her to the tee.

Am looking forward to the drama. ^_____________^

Sounds like a fun premise. I'll be crossing my fingers too since good romcoms seem incredibly hard to make.

"West Wing meets City Hall": If this is what we get I will be happy like a clam.
And yes, forget the melo boring/upsetting family tropes which would be overkill. Please?

that would be so cool! passing each other secret notes or trading bars on the debate floor with hidden messages in it that are actually lovey dovey but on the surface sounds like they are going at each other's throats lol! what a hoot!

They say politics makes strange bedfellows, so with a few laughs along the way, could be fun.

Oh sounds like the love story of a family friend.

This family friend is an activist, as in she joins rallies and marches to protest against government policies and stuff like that. In one of those anti-government rallies she met a military man. They fell in love despite their opposing ideologies. They got married, had kids, and still pursued their respective beliefs.

Later on she became congresswoman in our country representing marginalized members of society, while her husband rose in the ranks in the military.

Sadly, the husband died young due to heart attack. She is still congresswoman in our country.

I have loved Han Hye Jin since her Geum Soon days, and would love to see how she does in a comedic role. I have a feeling this one has potential.

Yeah, she'll always be a bit of 'Geum-soon' to me. Along with all of the other bits, she was pretty comedic, at times in that one. I see her delivering in whatever role she plays... :)

She's also good on Healing Camp - it's a variety show, but still.

I beg to disagree. See the comments above!! BTW, her last portrayer of a doctor, was not really impressive.

Loved her in Jumong as Queen So Seo No. I was hoping she would do another sageuk but this sounds a lot better than the weep-fest called Thorn Birds.

She did do one in 2010 called Jejungwon - although it was not popular, it was a quality drama about the first western medical school in Joseon/Korea. Check it out at http://www.dramacrazy.net or related k-drama sites, they are likely to have it.

She portrayed doctor twice. But, both dramas flopped. Jejeongwon is kind of slightly better, given the historical context.

Read about this on an online news site. That sounds promising and I like Han Hye-jin. I have never seen Shin Ha-kyun in anything, so I will be curious to see him here. Does anyone know how long (how many episodes) this drama will be?

Shin is a veteran actor and has been in close to 30 movies, thats why we dont see much of him in dramaland. He's only been in 2 or 3 dramas since 2010 I think.

this is a total random question but can anyone tell me how Seoul is exactly pronounced: is it see-ol or soul ????

Phonetically, I would say it sounds like "so-all" in English. Korean native speakers are free to correct me of course...

Not a native speaker, but I'd say it sounds more like 'sole' as in the sole of a foot.

It's suh-wool. Soft s. Think of it as two syllables, breaking as Seo-ul rather than one syllable like soul.

This sounds promising. My prayer is that if it starts out light in funny that it not devolve in to draggy draggy melo territory. I am getting really sick of that. (I prefer my melos to be upfront about it.)

Yes, SHin Ha Kyun is a all-round actor. He can be really funny and makes you laugh. In Harvest Villa, he did make me laugh a few times (non-stop!!). Nevertheless, he did not manage to have much chemistry with Lee Bo Young. I guess, it is not so much of Shin Ha Kyun's inability to ignite her loving sentiment, I believe it is Lee Bo Young who failed to respond to her counter part. That's the reason, I never finished watching the drama.

OMG I think it was just last week when I saw the news which reported Shin Ha-kyun didn't accept this role. Oh my god. I am so happy. You mean SHK + Rom-Com = 16 hours of silly, childish but adorable antics by SHK? (sorry, got reminded of Protect the Boss, hehe.) lol, I'm getting a little too excited here.

I'm so contented with the main leads, I hope the script and the rest of the cast will be good too. :)

I hope she wont give-up and chose another drama project and be on my computer screen each week! Cinema is special but sometimes she needs to seen on tv! Tv need good actresses.
