New season of Drama Special premieres with Sirius

A new year means a new season of KBS’s anthology series Drama Special, an umbrella for their short programming that varies in length from one to eight episodes per installment and launches new directors, writers, and lesser-known stars. This year they’re planning on six shows, and it kicks off with a 4-episode suspense thriller called Sirius, starring Seo Joon-young (To the Beautiful You, Bleak Night, Tree With Deep Roots) in a double leading role as a set of twins. Two Seo Joon-youngs and one of them is evil? Sold.

Directing is Mo Wan-il, whose credits include past Drama Specials and Dream High 2 (We’ll try not to hold that against you.) and writing is newbie Won Ri-oh with no credits. The series is an action thriller about a set of twin brothers, one good and one evil. They’re not going to be subtle about it either — one’s a cop and the other’s a criminal, so it’s as literal as can be. But damn if the imagery isn’t cool, with two identical gun-toting angels.

But of course there’s a twist, otherwise it’s not so interesting. The “E” and the “S” on the poster are for the two brothers’ names: Eun-chang, the hyung and convict, and Shin-woo, the younger brother who grows up to become a detective. And judging from the trailer — and granted, it’s confusing since it’s one actor playing two parts — the younger brother is the evil one. He’s the one whispering at the end, “Hyung should never have been born.” Creeeepy.

So it looks like Eun-chang ends up a convict because of something he did to save his little brother, and Shin-woo is a crooked cop. What makes it even harder to know for sure is that the story involves them swapping places, naturally, so who knows which brother is evil at which juncture in the story? I say we just prepare for a healthy dose of confusion, and hope that the performance from Seo Joon-young helps keep it all straight in our heads. No pressure.

The tagline on the poster: “The two brightest stars,” a reference to Sirius being the single brightest star in the sky. Please just don’t start adding any metaphors about how there can’t be two moons in the sky either. In some ways it sounds like your classic sacrificing hyung and wayward little bro story, except the part where they share a face, which opens them up to a sinister identity-swapping plot and a whole host of personal issues. I don’t know which brother is saying this in the trailer: “I look in the mirror and I see a face the same as yours, but why am I like this?” I think if you have to ask, you’re the Bad Twin.

Ryu Seung-soo (The Chaser), Uhm Hyun-kyung (Horse Healer), and Jo Woo-ri (Can Love Become Money) also star. Sirius premieres Sunday January 6, and airs for four weeks on KBS.

Wow, I didn't realize that before and I sat through quite a few painful episodes of "Only You" and most of "To the Beautiful You." I knew I had seen him somewhere before TTBY, just couldn't place it.

I finished that one...only cause his chemistry with the lead actress was amazing. Altho, unlike other dailies, problems in Just You got resolved pretty quickly. So i give them plus points. And SJY is really an amazing actor. His talent was wasted on TBY. SPOILER ahead for his daily drama's ending:

It's typical kdrama where everything got resolved. The evil second lead dude was sent to prison. When he was released, he went tot the States with Park Jung Ah's character. The lead girl was pregnant and was about to give birth just before the ending credits rolled in. And it wouldn't be a daily drama without a wedding!

AWESOMESAUCE! Seo Joon Young was the only reason why I sat through 128 episodes of "Only You." Can't wait for this tomorrow night!!!

I did the same. Though it was painful at times. He has a lot of charisma in the roles I've seen him in.

Yeah, the side stories were quite painful. But as I mentioned in an above comment, his chemistry and relationship with Han Hye Rin's character were so natural. The two looked like they're so in love.

This drama concept of hyung-dongsaeng is already heart-wrenching, and with twins at that. Hot twins. Yes, please.

I've encountered a somehow similar drama in the Philippines two years ago where one was a soldier and the other was a rebel in the mountains. Separated at birth, both raised good, until they met in an operation, got confused of each other's existence, and changed places.

This K-drama special has to be acted well, considering the actor's solid performance was what convinced me to watch that drama.

it's quite confusing... LOL

lol at the 'there can't be two moons in the sky' reference. But I'm sure that with only a 4-episode run there is no time to bore us with repetitive methaphors... right?

Other than that, this looks pretty interesting~~!

was wondering about these drama specials coz we get them on Saturdays on kbs world. managed to catch them once or twice but a bit frustrating cos there is no synopsis and no way for me to check out title and casts! yesterday, at least I recognized Minho's face and found out it was the pianist. that was a sweet drama. this one sounds interesting. thanks

Ohhhh! I'm excited! One of the reasons I hesitate to watch Korean dramas is the length, so watching mini-dramas is precisely what I wanted!

What are the other 4 shows about?

Seo Joon-young? SOLD, SOLD & SOLD. & Not, just one Seo Joon-young, but two Seo Joon-young's (Regardless of him playing two roles at once, still... the fact that theirs an evil and good) side is just intriguing ^^

This sounds really interesting, but will you guys recap it? 'Cause I don't think it'll be on Dramafever anytime soon, and that's where I get my kdrama fix, other than Netflix. And here is the only other place I can get kdramas. Please, Please recap this!

Yes! I've loved Suh Joon Young since Grudge: The Revolt of Gumiho. Excited to see him the lead again after being completely wasted as the lead on the daily drama Just You (where he had excellent chemistry with leading lady Han Hye Rin).

Definitely going to watch this.
