Weekend ratings: series highs for Childless, Seo-young, Alice

It was a good weekend for dramaland ratings, with multiple series highs left and right. Perhaps the most significant of them: cable network JTBC’s hit drama Childless Good Fortune reached a record 9.4% this weekend. Damn. Guess we can’t call cable the land of 1% ratings anymore. The family drama from star writer Kim Soo-hyun is breaking its own records week after week, and surpassing even Big 3 numbers on lower-rated shows. Go cable, go.

Childless ratings have been climbing steadily, but this weekend its peak ratings hit 12.5%, and the average is well on its way to breaking the 10% barrier. The series has already been extended due to its success, and will now end at 39 episodes total. Its competition, SBS’s My Love Madame Butterfly, came in with 13.0%, and MBC’s Rascal Sons brought in the rear with 6.1% Losing’s one thing, but losing to cable is rather epic.

Meanwhile, weekend ratings leader My Daughter Seo-young also reached a series high on KBS, now at a crazy 45.6% (surpassing its time slot predecessor, You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly). The production has had its share of backstage drama, but that doesn’t seem to have affected its numbers. Seo-young has decided not to extend (I think wisely, given its production woes), ending as originally planned at 50 episodes.

In the later time slot, MBC’s Hundred Year Inheritance led the pack at 17.5%, while Alice in Cheongdam-dong ended its 16-episode run on a series high at 16.6%, in second place. KBS’s King’s Dream recorded 11.6%. I just consider any day someone doesn’t end up in the hospital a good day for that show. Hundred Years is in a good position to maintain its lead, but we’ll have to see if Incarnation of Money shakes things up this coming week.

-Childless good fortune: I needed a few eps to warm up to it but now I'm seriously hooked. In a way, it looks a lot like Can We Get Married from the same channel.
-Hundred Year Inheritance: The fact than it's a Frankenstein creature makes it addictive. Pure makjang then slapstick comedy than rom-com than family scenes. And so many veteran actors/actresses in it.
-Alice: The last episode was much better than the previous ones which fell flat and were disorienting. Satisfying ending.

I find Hundred Year Inheritance so infuriating, but can't stop myself from watching. I still don't get why the girls father is so freeking passive. "oh, you lost your memory - well don't tell anyone it might upset them..." WTF??

Way to get my attention.Wasn't expecting the first photo.
Am pleased as punch with the ratings. I was wondering why I was watching so many weekend dramas vs weekday ones recently. They are quite good. I am watching 3 weekend series now.
And thank goodness we have confirmation MDSY is not getting extended. The end is in sight. I want to see what happens with HJ and SW. Subs are 3 weeks behind and I've given up on rewatching it subbed once they arrive.

I, too, noticed the first photo, except the photo sits there without any credit or description and so I haven't the foggiest idea where it came from and who is in it.

If you do, perhaps you would kindly share?

That's Childless Comfort and Ha Seok Jin the cutie from Standby. No idea who the girl is.

It's a screenshot from Childless Comfort (aka Childless Good Fortune). The male is the second son from the eldest family in the story; the lady his co-worker. Both are in the medical/plastic surgery profession (he's a dentist and she's an anesthesiologist, I believe). She's older than him by 2 years and in the show they're supposed to have sizzling chemistry with lots of bedroom romps. They are dating but both have agreed not to get married...for now.

Great opening pic! Man, I would look a lot less troubled if I were in the same bed as Ha Suk Jin all nekkid.

Wow, Childless Good Fortune's ratings! From now that, anyone with <10% ratings on a broadcast network will feel even crappier!

I wonder if South Korea was cold this past weekend and everyone just stayed in to watch tv.

I didn't think Soo Young would cross Unexpected You's ratings, mostly because I didnt find it that interesting (or funny) from the few episodes I watched. But damn, indeed, for Childless Fortune, that it crossed into double digits. I should check to see what it's about...

On my part I can't believe my daughter seo young is doing so well.. I think Koreans must really like melodramas better. But then maybe watching it is not so much a reflection of how good a drama is on a weekend but how little else we have to watch. I certainly am following with one eye coz I tend to be at mom's on weekends and both of us sit there and complain about plot development etc!!

Now I really wanna watch Childless Good Fortune... Why isn't anyone subbing it???????????????
no, seriously i'm about to watch it without subs.

Yayy for My Daughter Seo Yeong, I love that show... it did take me a few episodes...10...to really get into it but now i'm hooked and rooting for the pschyo stalker girl with the doctor.

I wish someone would kindly sub it cuz we're really behind!

Oh thank God for not extending Seo Yeong! I mean i love it obviously but an extension would mean extended heartbreak for the main couple whilst i just want them to start making up (or is that making out?!) already!
'100 year inheritance' is awesome but surprisingly am only interested in the main characters, the rest of the different crazy families' members i just can't be bothered with...

You're not the only one. I just skip the parts with the other family members. I have no idea what their storylines are until/unless they cross paths with that crazy mother-in-law and her goings on.

I'm currently on episode 13 for My Daughter SeoYoung and really can't understand what all the hype is about. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge makjang and weekend drama fan so I was rather excited for this drama but so far I'm waiting to "get hooked" and honestly, getting kinda tired waiting. I may give it a couple more episodes however not sure which episode is the turning point for this drama.....anyone watching, do let me know!

I wish Childless was being subbed, I'd love to check it out!

Hundred Year's Inheritance is up the wazoo with makjang cliches, but hey, if you're a fan, this is right up your alley *points to self* lol it's worth checking out

Damn 9% ratings on cable! and to think they were thinking of not doing dramas anymore because of low ratings and now they are going toe to toe with the big networks! that says a lot about what's going on in dramaland right now, perhaps if the big networks could be more creative and stop copying each other, it would be more exciting. Anyway i'm happy them.

The ratings reached 45% ? Dear me, that's getting close to the 50% mark (I remember My Name is Kim Sam Soon reaching those numbers towards the end), but I'm watching this drama right now and I love it, maybe I find it easier than Kay to adhere to the choices Seo Young has had to make (I will agree that it takes time to lift but once you get around 15-20 it will soar).

This is the first drama I am actually watching unsubbed and it is keeping me literally hooked to my seat (I am on 31 right now). I might make my mother watch this one. Oh, and I would like to say THANK GOD, no extension, because the story is doing absolutely fine thus far. An extension would only ruin things.

Good thing Seo young will not get extended, it will just lead to endless loops in the complicated story. BUt must admit it is addictin to watch all the melodrama unfold.
