Chae Jung-ahn to play Song Seung-heon’s wife

Interesting. Chae Jung-ahn (Queen of Reversals) was originally planning to make her drama comeback in the JTBC sageuk War of the Flowers, but has dropped that project to join Song Seung-heon’s new gangster-who-loves show When A Man Loves. Well, they’ll certainly make a pretty pair. This should tell us everything we need to know about this drama: She plays his wife, and is the second lead. I smell cheater!

It’s a melodrama about people who are swept up in “the feverish craze of love,” and the strife that comes from their entanglements. Song Seung-heon stars as a gangster who falls in love with his mob boss’ wife, and then marries her once the boss dies. Whether it’s for love or power is anybody’s guess. And then he’ll meet and fall in love with Shin Se-kyung, while still married to Chae Jung-ahn. Are we supposed to like him at all? Yeon Woo-jin will be his rival, who also falls for Shin Se-kyung.

Chae Jung-ahn’s character is described as a passionate, sophisticated woman, who finds out about her husband falling in love with another woman… and just sits back and keeps tabs on the affair. Hm, why does that sound scarier than if she were to blow her top? I’m not sure this drama is my cup of tea, but I do like Chae Jung-ahn. She’s definitely better in cute comedic roles, and second lead is no new territory for her, but I can see her playing up the cold jilted lover.

When A Man Loves will be helmed by the director of Arang and the Magistrate and the writer of Equator Man. It follows Level 7 Civil Servant and premieres in April on MBC.

Hi, could someone explain why people don't like Song Seung-heon? Is he a bad actor or is it that he's been in bad projects? I liked him very much in A Better Tomorrow.

Hi. I've only seen him in a couple if things, so I can't speak with authority on his whole body of work. However, based on what I have seen, I think people's "dislike" of him has to do with what we call here in the States, "lack of range". He seems to do okay only in a certain type of genre, like rom-coms .... and that's it. Remove him from this and it starts to get a little off.

I would add that he seems "too aware" of the camera, if that makes any sense ..... like he knows everyone is looking at him "right now" and on some level he feels uncomfortable with all eyes on him. I think he's a very good-looking man, and I'm guessing he was very good-looking since a very, very early age. Perhaps he received a lot of attention because of this early on and for whatever reason, it was just too much .... too much for a young boy to handle which later carried on into adulthood.

All this being said, I like him too. I didn't think he was that bad in My Princess (rom-com of course). It suited him. I'll give him credit for trying different things though. At least he tries to diversify himself and he keeps at it. Can't blame a guy for trying.

Anyway, a bit long here, but this is my best guess so far.

In My Princess, he was OK: Give him simple scenes where he has to smile and be flirty and he nails it. In Dr Jin, I was always whispering at my screen: "overacting" "flat" "non fitting" "dead fish eyes"... Script was awful but it doesn't prevent a good actor from harboring the right emotion/expression for a scene: Some actors for secondary characters did better than him with what they were given.

He's actually very good in A Better Tomorrow....filling in commendably in the very big shoes of Chow Yuen Fatt. And he's delightful in My Princess. But unfortunately....lacklustre in his other efforts, especially his portrayer of the character of Dr Jin lately, although the writer in that drama have to take most of the blame.

With actor such as him, he has to be very aware of his own limitation and be clever enough with the right drama/movie selection which will allow him to shine.

I agree. He's been good exactly twice -- My Princess and A Better Tomorrow. In My Princess he did comedy and was golden and in Better Tomorrow he was really quirky and kinda crazy and therefore awesome. But he also was not the lead so he didn't have to carry the emotional center of the film. In those kinds of roles, he's good, but as a dramatic lead, YUCK!

I'm not one of those who don't like him. But, it is true that his acting skills aren't something to talk about. He's pretty no body can deny it but sometimes being pretty is not enough particularly if your enjoyment in watching movies or dramas mainly comes from a good acting. But I like him in He Was Cool, I like him in My Princess and I don't hate him in Summer Scent. Having said that I have to say that I the main reason for me in watching drama is its story line and reading what this one is all about I think I'll pass. Not because of Song Seung Hun but because melo isn't my cup of tea and this cheater's story is a no no for me.

I watched Sheung's work for the first time, and truth be told, I don't get where you get off bashing SSH coz what I have read, none of you. Got the story line on WHEN A MAN LOVES...facts...he was never married to the 2nd lead female who happened to be his dead boss's girlfriend...she infact had a one_sided relationship...they almost got married, but she didn't turnout for the wedding to save him from being falsely accused. He nailed his character, no need to fault a guy for his looks. Am totally beyond comprehending how none of you, are talking about the horrible drop dead to kingdom come acting of the lead female actress I kept going..."are you freaking kidding me, the whole drama she had one emotional expression she failed miserably in bringing her character to life , be realistic in your reviews don't just bash for the sake of bashing. Am about to watch Dr.Jin am sure just like WHEN A MAN LOVES....yu all bashers will definitely be off the mark. When a man loves was well written , it brought out all the emotions that the.writer envisaged, it had twists and turns and the ending left one with the feeling of "I didn't see that coming" considering the events unfolding to.that point. As far as this drama is concerned SSH nailed it, and the two gangster friends of SSH. I give the female trophy to the actress that played the mom of Seo Mi Do,..I will watch more of SSH WORKS PROBABLY I WILL BE PROVEN WRONG BUT O HIGHLY DOUBT IT. I Enjoyed his work as I did the four gentlemen in THE.DRAMA A GENTLEMAN'S DIGNITY.

I don't think that's true. He is quite a darling here. We even have a pet name for him Mr. Hand Towel. And we don't give a pet name to just any actor. Another darling here is Jo Hyun Jae who is practically lost his name here and simply called as Kang Ah. The different is that Song Seung Hun got his pet name because of his lack luster acting skills but there are many other actors/idols who also don't shine in that department and they don't get a pet name let alone so much attention as Song Seung Hun. So, you see in a way we are his fan.

And I can tell you that I'm not anti Song Seung Hun.

Yep, there will be blood at the end of this drama. Cheating is the crappiest thing you can do to a partner but I find it interesting that if the genders were reversed, even my initial reaction would have been 'oh, maybe her husband was abusive/uncaring/cheating' but no such benefit of doubt is extended to men. Just an interesting thought.

Anyhow, I'm guessing that either their relationship is business only (on his end at least) or the wife betrays him in some unforgiveable way.

And then he just cons the wife into marrying him right after even though she may not really like him all that much. And then when he falls in love with the other girl, she's all "Oh, hell no! I'm not being biased or whatever but I really want to give my opinion about SSH.

SSH's talent in acting seems to be controversial and doubting for everyone here. Anyway, have you all watched East of Eden ? or any other series except My Princess and Dr.Jin?

I think he is not only good at rom-com because before that he had been playing in many melodramas. Most of his roles are very tough and really need a lot of effort. Autumn in My Heart, Summer Scent, East of Eden are very good examples.
His acting is so good. I mean while I am watching I really believe he's 100% of that character.

If you have watched these series you might change your attitude toward SSH.

For Dr.Jin, I think he can't really show his talent. I believe he can do better if the writing is good. His character is not quite interesting and less outstanding compare to other characters in Dr.Jin.
That's why people who watch it might think he's not talented.

I did watch EoE all the way up to ep 20, and SSH was absolutely astoundingly gorgeous. I actually stopped the video just to stare. They dressed and lit him with loving care.
But he was not a good actor in that. Yes, he can do the quiet moments nicely, and some romantic ones, but everything heavy duty is so forced, and BIG and everyonelookatmeIamacting!
The other thing I noticed in EoE is how little connection he makes to the other actors in his scenes. You can almost see him recite the other actors lines in his head waiting for his turn to speak. Nothing natural, organic, smooth.
The fact that he won an acting award is still considered a joke. He shared it with Kim Myung Min, for goodness sakes.

In jin, i think the story is not good enough to prove the skill acting of SSH. Not because he cant act but the story does not good enough.
