Flower Boy Next Door: Episode 10

Sparks of all kinds go off left and right in this episode—the romantic kind, the combative kind, and the kind that sting and burn. Our heroine is forced to face her demons, while the boys race to be her knight in shining armor… except they’re so busy fighting each other for the honor that they don’t even notice their Rapunzel is slipping out of reach.

EPISODE 10: “If you want to know the enemy, don’t look with my eyes, but hers!”

Facing the departure gate, it finally dawns on Enrique that he’s been grasping at straws for a reason to stay—someone who’d need him at the company, a deal that couldn’t be done without him. But now he knows: “I didn’t need those things. I can leave whenever I want.”

Seo-young argues that his stuff is already on the plane and it’s about to take off. She tells him that everything that seems so dire now will fade as soon as he gets back home.

Enrique: “No. The reason I can’t leave is with me—It’s still okay, I can stop here, I can leave anytime—I was fooling myself like this. But you know me. Once I start a game, I have to see the end no matter what. I can’t end it here.” She relents, telling him to follow his heart to that end then, and not to give up like she did. She boards the plane, leaving him behind.

Enrique rushes back, now armed with Seo-young’s phone. He tries calling Dok-mi, but she’s busy buying flowers and misses his call. He grows more and more incensed as he thinks about Do-hwi, and then Jin-rak, who is now a con artist and evil webtoon plagiarist in his eyes.

Jin-rak is still stuck at the meeting with his editor, who seems to have taken a liking to Dong-hoon. She wonders if he hasn’t slept because he looks so tired, and tells him that she’s not going to allow herself to sleep more than four hours a night until she’s 35. Ha, well that explains the constant dark circles and raging anger.

Jin-rak gets a call from Enrique, whose face darkens as he says he doesn’t really care that much about the plagiarism, “But why did you hide your identity? I don’t like people who can’t be honest. I can’t have someone who isn’t honest… by Ajumma’s side. So leave her side. Until you do, I won’t return to Spain.”

Jin-rak jumps up and rushes out to the party, frantic about getting there before Enrique. “Because I was first!”

Dok-mi arrives at the party, and we catch up to the scene that closed the last episode, as Do-hwi introduces their old teacher with a nasty smile. Dok-mi drops the flowers in her hand in shock.

The two boys arrive at nearly the same time, or at least appear to in split-screen, both muttering simultaneously about this sinking feeling of nervousness.

Inside, Dok-mi sits nervously as Do-hwi catches her up on what Teach has been up to. He turns to her and asks if she’s still writing, remembering the play they wrote when she was in high school.

She’s near tears and growing increasingly agitated, which no one seems to notice. She finally speaks: “You’re all… fine. You all ask me without a care. You’re all… so cruel.” It seems to jab at Teach, while Do-hwi just scoffs like the evil snake that she is.

Dok-mi blinks back her tears and gets up, staggering to the door. The room grows fuzzier with each step, and she starts to fall…

But Enrique is there to catch her. “Ajumma, ajumma.” A tear trickles down her cheek as she looks up at him and thinks to herself, “You left. Why are you here?” And then she faints in his arms.

Do-hwi then comes running up feigning concern… and then we see that it’s Jin-rak holding her up, not Enrique. Omo. Did she imagine him as Enrique? Omo.

Jin-rak screeeeeeams, “What the hell did you do?!” He carries her out and rushes off to the hospital, leaving the entire party standing in the street. Enrique arrives just then and demands to know what happened.

Do-hwi just wails that she doesn’t know why everyone’s blaming her. Uh, because you’re basically the one standing over the dead body with the knife in your hand and looking guilty? Hypothetically. For instance.

Enrique growls that he’s like a dog with a bone when he wants to get to the bottom of something, and demands to know what the hell she did, back then and now. “What did you do to make a person shut herself away so completely?!”

Dok-mi wakes up in the hospital, a little embarrassed and insisting that she’s fine. Jin-rak doesn’t let her off the hook so easily, and asks what happened back in high school. He says that Do-hwi’s version of the story sounded not quite right, and wonders if he hasn’t stood by and watched her long enough to merit that much trust.

Enrique arrives just then, and sees them together. He stands behind a curtain, as Dok-mi starts to tell Jin-rak (in vague terms) about waking up famous one day. She went to school not knowing what rumors were circulating about her and didn’t know how to handle it, or even how to run away.

“Why do people hate other people? Why do they treat them differently? Why do they want to step on the weak? There must be people who aren’t like that. Where are all those people? I thought if there were just one person like that, it would be nice. Since then, being alone was always more comfortable.”

She cries while saying the words, and Enrique cries while hearing them from behind the curtain.

Jin-rak thanks her for opening up to him, and offers up a pathetically cute confession in exchange that he was a loser in high school too. It’s pathetic because it’s sort of like telling a person who got hit by a car that you have a paper cut, but it’s cute because he means well by it.

She starts to get up, when Enrique shows himself. Dok-mi immediately thinks back to her hallucination and smiles to see that he really didn’t leave. Aw. He challenges Jin-rak to confess anything else he’s hiding, and they exchange charged looks.

He rushes over to Dok-mi and apologizes for insisting she make up with Do-hwi, and speaking too quickly before even knowing the whole story. “But the one person who’s one your side… isn’t Oh Jin-rak.”

When it’s time to check out and pay the hospital bill, Jin-rak stands off to the side, pitifully emptying his pockets and sighing to himself, as Enrique pays the bill. Dok-mi promises to pay him back.

The two boys walk ahead as Dok-mi trails behind, and they finally have it out. Enrique says that he can’t leave Jin-rak by Dok-mi’s side, and Jin-rak in turn calls him out for liking her.

They go back and forth in a round of over-my-dead-body, and Jin-rak swears that even if it’s not him (to stay by Dok-mi’s side), it won’t be Enrique. Enrique of course says the same—he can’t let it be Hyung.

They’re so busy having their shouting match over Dok-mi that by the time they turn around, she’s long gone. Pwaha. Serves you right.

She walks home on her own, thinking back to the moment she saw Teacher tonight, and then back to high school, when he weaseled out and named her as the one who was obsessed with him and left the school.

She heads to a realtor to start looking for a new apartment, and says that it doesn’t matter where; she’ll go wherever the security deposit is cheapest.

Enrique finds her on her way back home, and she asks why he returned. He can’t quite bring himself to tell her the truth, so he puts on his happy face and says it’s because of his book… and then admits he came because he was worried about her.

She tells him that she played his board game and did what it told her to—she opened her door and stepped outside but this happened. “You don’t need to worry anymore, because I’m not going to throw the dice again.”

He says that her teacher was 28 at the time, (ah, so it must’ve been Teach who told him what happened) and that he was so scared of losing his job that he thought of himself first before protecting Dok-mi. Years later he realized how terrible that was and gave up teaching.

He tells her that her teacher came today because he wanted to apologize to her, and asked Enrique to tell her so. But Dok-mi counters coldly that she doesn’t want an apology—are those words supposed to make her feel better? I know, right? Even I’M angry at that measly apology. So you quit teaching, boo hoo. Ass.

Enrique tries to get her to overcome the problem using another soccer analogy, but it has the opposite effect of making her shut down completely. She says, dripping with cold sarcasm, that he’s right and she’s all better now, and walks away. He sighs, knowing it’s a flat-out lie.

Jin-rak waits and waits in the hallway, and eventually goes home.

Inside, Dok-mi opens up Enrique’s board game and holds the dice in her hand. Enrique opens up the USB drive from Jin-rak and finds a picture of a notebook—proof that he didn’t plagiarize Zombie Soccer. And Jin-rak puts away the notice of his debt case.

Dok-mi writes more of her work in progress:

That woman’s door did not open for a long time. Invitations began to pile on her doorstep, two, then three. A person who came close like a new breeze, a person who blocks a gale like a shelter from the wind. For the first time, that woman grows afraid of her own desire to open her door.

Dong-hoon is still moonlighting as a flower boy designated driver, and has an unfortunate accident when he backs up into another car. Suddenly his webtoon editor arrives at the same club and barges her way in.

It turns out he called her, not wanting Jin-rak to know about any of this, and begs her to co-sign the contract that he’ll repay the cost of damages to the other car. She hems and haws, but eventually signs, and they share a cute little moment looking into each other’s eyes.

Dok-mi heads out the next morning and hands the security guard ajusshi an envelope. He’s in the middle of catching the neighbor ajumma from falling, which Dok-mi mistakes for a public display of affection and leads to awkward looks all around.

Enrique gets all riled up watching his team lose at soccer, screaming that he can’t trust a soul in this world, like they personally betrayed him or something. He furiously draws a sketch of Jin-rak’s plan (to woo Dok-mi), which basically involves watching her from a distance for a long time.

He declares that he’ll just do the opposite then, and say that he was the first to take her to the beach and the first to storm into her apartment… and then buries his face in embarrassment: “Why does it all sound so childish?” Because it is?

But then to his utter surprise, Dok-mi shows up at his doorstep. She’s here to repay him for the hospital bill, but he looks at it with an evil eye, knowing that the second he takes it, she’ll zoom away. Hee. But she asks to come inside. His eyes widen and he nods eagerly.

At the same time, the security guard and ajumma knock on Jin-rak’s door to tell him that Dok-mi returned the settlement money from their protest because she’s moving. The ajumma says everyone in the neighborhood knows that Jin-rak likes 402 (aw) and they all sigh in sympathy as the news sinks in.

He thinks back to the only request he ever made—for Dok-mi to just remain where she is.

Enrique rattles off this story about how he ran out from the airport, and then stopped at a Chinese restaurant. (That’s why you were late? Pffft.) He says he always racked his brains choosing between jajangmyun and jjampong, and so decided to try the dish that combines the two flavors.

But what he found was that it didn’t taste the same at all—he likes each separately, but not together. Was it because of the lost anticipation of choosing one and missing the other? He says resolutely that from now on, he’ll think about it carefully and choose one or the other.

Dok-mi interrupts his rambling to say thank you, which we know is a goodbye. She thanks him for everything he’s done for her, and says that when she thinks of the ocean, it’ll make her smile and give her strength.

She says she feels bad that he’s only ever done nice things for her and she’s never done anything for him. He pouts that it’s like she’s saying thanks but it sounds more like I’m sorry, and tells her to be nice to him from now on.

He thinks of something right away, and asks her to come with him to his book signing tomorrow, and wear a dress on the red carpet. He giggles to himself in excitement, but realizes it’s asking a lot of her, so he just asks her to come along.

She says in response: “[He’s/You’re] a good person…” Enrique blushes, thinking she means him. But she finishes: “Oh Jin-rak-sshi.” *gasp* What?

She says that she feels comfortable enough with Jin-rak to tell him about herself. His face falls, “So you chose… between jajangmyun and jjampong. You thought about it carefully, right?” She doesn’t answer.

She leaves the envelope of money and heads to the door. He reaches over to open the door for her, and they end up face-to-face. He raises a finger to touch her forehead and their eyes lock.

Enrique: “When I looked at you, I strangely used to think I could hear your voice. But now… I can’t hear anything. I don’t know. I really don’t know.” Augh, puppy. He opens the door and she walks out.

Dong-hoon checks their webtoon stats online and gapes to see their average rating as 1.5, with a total of 11 votes (including the two of them, sadly). Jin-rak barely hears him, he’s so depressed about Dok-mi moving away.

The doorbell rings and he flings the door open angrily, jumping in shock to see Dok-mi at his door. She asks him to go to a Van Gogh exhibit with her (like a date?), and he beams. “I love you! I mean, not you! I love Van Dok-mi! I mean, Van Gogh!” Hahaha. You’re such a spazz.

But around the corner, Enrique has overheard the whole exchange and pouts that he likes Van Gogh too. Waah, I don’t think I can handle it if his heart gets broken.

It’s the day of his book signing, and though he puts on a happy face, all he can think about is Dok-mi and Jin-rak making time with Van Gogh. He finishes the signing and takes his camcorder on a tour of the city, and picks up two stalkers in the process. One looks like his ajumma stalker anti-fan, and the other looks a lot like Seo-young from behind.

He’s bobbing along down the street when suddenly the ajumma stalker jumps out and pushes him down, into oncoming traffic. What the?

The car comes to a screeching halt. Eep, did he get hit?

At the art gallery, Dok-mi grabs a pamphlet and gets a paper cut, drawing blood in the same spot where she had pricked her finger trying to close her curtains and keep Enrique out.

Enrique lies in the street as people start to gather around him. Suddenly he sees Dok-mi looking down at him, crying with worry. Is it really her? Is it a vision?

He smiles as he looks up at her, and the realization sinks in. He thinks to himself: “I’ve fallen in love.”

COMMENTS

Awwww. What a great episode for Enrique. Yoon Shi-yoon has been doing a fantastic job all series long, but he really brought out the full spectrum of Enrique’s character in this episode. He’s outwardly such a bright bubbly chatterbox that when he quiets down to show a moment of sincerity it hits that much harder, and cuts that much deeper. That sharp contrast has always been there, but it did wonders in this episode when he went from riding high on Dok-mi’s thank you and then sinking when he thought she chose Jin-rak over him.

I do believe that Dok-mi means what she says about Jin-rak being a good person, but I think she’s saying that for the boys’ benefit, not because she’s chosen her noodle dish, so to speak. But even still, the fact that Enrique suffers heartache thinking that she’s made her choice—that in itself hurts like hell.

But despite what they say to each other outwardly, we see in the episode’s theme that they’re still on the same wavelength, just on mute for the time being. I love what each of them hallucinating the other in a moment of trauma conveys so simply, without needing explanation: I wish you were here. It finally takes that kind of shock to make Enrique realize that he’s not just feeling jealous or protective or feeding his curiosity and his I-have-to-see-how-it-ends nature, but falling in love. The question is how much Dok-mi realizes about her own feelings, if at all.

My concern isn’t that Dok-mi is running off with Jin-rak, but that she’s going around saying her goodbyes, intending to lock herself away for good. It was so nice to have her knocking on both boys’ doors for a change, and I’d hate to see her retreat back because of Do-hwi’s nasty stunt. She was doing so well, but now she’s back to shutting down and everything she’s saying right now feels like goodbye. I hope that rather than having the boys save her in some way, she’ll decide for herself that she wants to open her door and come out into the world. And if that reason happens to be because she falls in love, all the better.

I wasn't completely satisfied with the previous episode to be honest but this one is back on the awesome: Clearing the way of all those "ennemies" (DH, teacher, control freak JR). Dok Mi can breathe now and has latitute to ponder her next move. I'm so glad than she decided to physically move out of that building. If so many people were trying to meddle in my life I would have my own party to tell everyone just fu** U. Those who would understand are welcome, the others, well...
The preview for next week is *in-te-res-ting* but I refuse to choose a scenario for the context: I've been burnt too many times with misleading previews (tvN is a specialist of the discipline: The 3rd Ward anyone?). Will enjoy quietly the rest of the week, without pressure.

My sentiments exactly about misleading previews. It's cute when the ending is a bit of a fake-out but when the previews are purposely messing with you...aaargh.

I'm so fed up with Jin Rak. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike his character, he's sweet and protective. But he keeps saying 'I was first! I saw her first!' when really Enrique's statement about their wooing of Dokmi was right. Enrique was first; the first to visit her house, to take her to the beach, to help her change. Jin Rak keeps saying that he deserves to be Dokmi's side because he was there longer, but he wasn't; he's never gotten close enough to BE by her side, while Enrique did. It's just Jin Rak doesn't see that, which frustrates me so much... He's wrong, and he can't see why so he can't improve..... AAAHHHH!!!

Wow, I found myself really hating that "I was first" stuff as well. Not hating Jin Rak. But there seems to be this unwritten rule in drama that "I was here first so I should be the one who is loved."

Am presently rolling my eyes with "One hundred year's inheritance" because one girl has a major case of "I was here first."

I liked the conversation between Enrique and Jin Rak about the whole concept. I mean, there is no "time" or "time limit" on how/when we should love. So glad the screenwriters were kinda addressing the whole "Me first. I deserve her because chronologically in time I was there first."

Sometimes I want to say to a drama character: "Do you really think he would've loved you if your rival didn't exist?"

I'm pretty sure that the person with the guitar at the end of the episode isn't SY (it's probably the obsessed fan). SY's guitar case is darker and doesn't have that keychain (or whatever that is) on the bottom zipper handle.

The last couple episodes have been really good. I like all the characters too. But here's the reason I support Enrique more then Jinrak (though I wish their bromance wasn't ending sourly).
For Jinrak, I don't like him using "I was first" as an excuse for why he should be with Dokmi. Okay we get it, you were first. But you didn't do jack for the 3 years that you were first. Also him trying to keep Dokmi sheltered away from the world, I don't like. You can only live like that for so long. The way I see things, post-Enrique Dokmi was barely living. I just feel like he's trying to date Dokmi for all the wrong reasons. Like he's not trying to understand her at all and just keeps believing she's a princess who needs to be shielded.

With Enrique, I admit that I don't like his childish demeanor at times and he could be annoying at times. But at least he tries to understand Dokmi. I liked that he tried to understand her way before he was in love with her. Also I just generally like his all around character. He probably deals with the most pain out of the characters with him being insulted by antis, attacked by antis, have rumors spread about him and people assume stuff about him. He also probably keeps all those hurt emotions bottled up because he doesn't have a friend in the world to confide to. But despite all this he keeps on trucking. Whenever he gets knocked down on his ass he just gets back up. He doesn't let the world or the haters get him down. I respect him for his mental fortitude

I was wondering why Enrique cried when he heard Dok Mi's thoughts on the rumours about her and the people who spread them. I finally understood when I read your comment.

Quote from the recap by Girlfriday:
"Why do people hate other people? Why do they treat them differently? Why do they want to step on the weak? There must be people who aren’t like that. Where are all those people? I thought if there were just one person like that, it would be nice. "

What Dok Mi said must have been what he was feeling about the anti-fans. I am so used to his happy face that it didn't occur to me that he could have been hurt by the rumours. Then again, on hindsight, the show has been dropping little clues here and there. E.g At the book signing event earlier on when someone asked if he had a son like the rumours said; he was also disturbed by the search engine keywords associated with his name etc.

That's a great analysis. He perceives himself as much as an outcast as Dok-mi does. I thought the scene at the airport where he says that he was waiting for an excuse to stay, but in the end there was nothing, was full of loneliness. It says everything. He waited for someone in his company to say he was needed to solve the problem. No one needed him. He waited for Dok-mi to call or show up at the window. She never did.

He was going to leave for Spain feeling unneeded.

And don't forget, when he reached the hospital, he had already spoken to Teacher Asshat, and had realized Dok-mi was victimized and bullied in school. So he had the empathy on both levels.

And don't forget: as a child prodigy, he would had little interaction with his peers and probably never really had people to rely on, outside of his cousin, or another friend outside of Seo-young. So he had his own well-developed sense of isolation.

I appreciate Enrique's response to Dok Mi's decision to date Jin Rok (retire back to seclusion). He just asked her if she thought it through and left it at that. Even though he had an opportunity to try to change her mind with a possessive kiss (like most dramas would), he refrained and instead made that moment about their mental connection. During that doorway scene, she plastered herself on that wall, so his physical proximity was more potent than usual for her, she didnt know what he would do. He dropped the bubbly high pitched voice and used his sexy, low, voice. (HOT!!!) He showed he realized that he knows there's more than what she saying aloud, but he can't read her for now.(So good)

And another thing...Overall the drama has used the wrist grab sparingly, to my surprise. The trope wasn't used in FBND because of dominance but to convey a sense of need. Enrique and Dok Mi used it to get physically closer to each other to ask or offer emotional protection. That's tremendous progress for a Kdrama, in my book.

For me this drama up til now is almost perfect. My only wish is that it had a better handle on its peripheral characters. I think FBND is really trying to make good on that ratings promise kiss.

Yup and double yup! I felt the tension in that scene. I could feel Dok-mi's physical attraction to Enrique then but because it's a new feeling her initial reaction is to shrink back. Isn't it perfect that Enrique sent her back with the realization that he also felt that same mind reading connection she felt in the first few episodes. It made it clear to her that she isn't honest enough even to herself.

"she isn't honest enough even to herself."

In her last entry she acknowledged that she wants to open the door to the person knocking. But she is just too afraid to open herself to more pain...I totally agree that she's honest, but not enough.
If she's completely honest, it is painful to leave all these connections behind. It will hurt to move away from all her new found friends. It will be painful to her and the people she's leaving. So at this point she needs to realize that causing and receiving pain is going to happen whether she secludes herself or opens herself up to life and love with Enrique.

thanks gf,

Jin rak's character was written as for 2nd lead actor.

I SAID that if kim ji hoon didn't perform well than YSH acting will fall FLAT !

Kim jin hoon is the catalyst for YSH to act well.

Well jin rak still have his moments nothing is concrete yet . Whose hands are clasping tightly definitely not enrique.

I still like jin rak's character not pushy or greedy
either.

As for the kiss, dok mi didn't open her mouth same like the first time - the accidental kiss from enrique.

With YSH, do you meant YSY instead?
In that case, I disagree. I do not think Jihoon is the catalyst for Siyoon to act well.
Even without Jihoon, I'm confident Siyoon would act just as good with another actor in Jihoon's place.
I get that you are a fan of Jihoon, but lets not say things like it's because of this actor that another actor is doing well.

What an emotional episode. As usual, all the actors really brought their A-game. You could practically see Dok-Mi physically retreating into her shell when she saw the teacher, and realized Do-Hwi is the same old psycho beyotch she always was (speaking of which, did anybody else practically hear the Death Star music when Do-Hwi cruelly smiled?). And when Dok-Mi said at the hospital she just wanted to know if there were people in the world who wouldn't be cruel . . .waugh, that was just so heartbreaking.

Everyone has their opinions on this, but I think her leaving the apartment and going on the "date" with Jin-rak were bad things. She is essentially running away, both from the physical apartmen (by leaving) and from her budding feelings for Enrique (by going out with Jin Rak), and that's wrong. For her own good she needs to come out of her shell, not retreat further into it. And speaking of Enrique, I love how he literally runs away from a flight to get to his girl, Hollywood rom-com style, has a soapy, "back-off, she's mine" convo with Jin-Rak, but it takes him a whole episode to realize he's falling for her? Um, you think :)? I also appreciated his apologizing to Dok-Mi for pushing her reunion with Do-Hwi. His analogies may have been less than helpful, but for a bubbly, confident person to admit they're wrong shows strength of character.

As for Jin-Rak, he's starting to grate. I think he's a good guy and cares for Dok-Mi, and I can understand his agony at losing out because he waited too long to act. But "I saw her first?" Really, dude? She's not a half-price item on a sales rack, or an object up for auction at Christie's. You can't call dibs on a person, especially when you've made no moves for 3 years. I'm still curious to see his double-identity backstory, though.

Loved the ending scene - Enrique coming full circle by hallucinating Dok-Mi the way she imagined him. I love the parallel steps they're taking toward each other - almost like a dance. Bring on Monday!

Best line in these comments, no contest.

I really love the way Enrique and Dok-mi are changing each other, even if it's hard for them to realise and deal with it. And Monday cannot come fast enough!

I really liked the fact that the episode's pacing really draws you in and makes you breath at one with the tempo of the characters. The scenes between Dok Mi and the boys are so heartfelt and so real. There's a lot of emotional honesty and depth, not the usual "look pained bec i'm supposed to be sad" /"Look angry bec i'm supposed to be jealous" type of k-drama emotions. It's much more complex.

I also love the conversation (or shouting match) outside the hospital between the two boys. it is so telling that they have opposite approaches to Dok Mi and how they both believe they are doing the best thing. "Don't shake her!" sums up Jin Rak's approach of standing by her and shielding her, the "shield from the stormy gale" as Dok Mi described him. Enrique is the "cool breeze" that shakes things up.

Can't wait for next week!

I'm again, a bit disappointed with these two last episodes. Many things happened and everything was just too messy. The party, Dok Me getting hurt, revelations, Enrique leaving and coming back, hospital, strange new fan, Dok Me deciding to move, sudden Van Goh date. I totally laughed when Jin Rak was like "No not you I love Van Dok" xD Then that strange stalker, the accident and much more.

I feel like characters didn't have enough time to get over first hit when another was already coming. And even when so much happened I felt kind of bored... Maybe because the drama is at the point when sad and dramatic things usually happen and this is where the quirkiness usually starts disappearing and dragginess comes along. Usually it's the first 8 amazing episodes in every drama and then it starts getting worse.

Actually my favorite scenes were with Dong Hoon and the webtoon manager xD I love her character even though all she does was just yell.

I also really like Park Soo Jin and I think she is doing her job with Cha Do Hwi really WELL! She managed to turn such an annoying character into actually an interesting one, true she is annoying but not so much I want her leave the screen. I want to know her story.

Two things:
1) everyone has a problem with Jin Rak saying "i saw her first, i was here first." ummmm, thats how guys act. That is one of the most realistic guy traits portrayed here. While it was shown in another format with the karoke sing off in ep 9, at the base, it's a pissing contest.

2) the anti-fan ahjumma. Need tonfind out wtf her deal is, and will she be as crazy coucko bananas like the maid in wild romance?

Ok i lied,, three things. 3) die do hwi, die.

That is all.

yeah, Do-hwi can just go die in a fire, that sociopath - I don't even understand what further purpose she serves in the story now. At least Seo-young, self-centred as she is, had the decency to let Enrique go with a good wish once she realised what was up/he told her he wanted to stay.

(and while we're at it can someone burn Do-hwi's horrible Yeti coats too)

I am going to agree with what maakopla said. These last two episodes have been kind of lack-luster. I have really enjoyed watching this drama because of its ability to blend humor and sadness without either emotion drowning out the other. I hope that the writer doesn't resort to typical k-drama formula for the remaining episodes (because I'll cry and then I'll rant!).

I loved watching the scene with Dong-hoon and his manager. I'm sensing a romance!

I liked PSH singing this OST which has a sad lyrical quality. Just love her voice.

LOL at the hilarious scenes with the editor and Dong hoon. She is a real funny scene stealer! I loved it when they beeped the bad words they were exchanging to the night club owner over the repair bill. I hope they use more scenes with them together.

I think Dok Mi is slowly saying good bye to her fellow tenants and hide away again. Her asking Jin Rak out to see Van Gogh (My absolute favorite French Impressionist painter) was not because she is romantically interested in him, but to say good bye. After all, he has drawn 3 years of post-its on milk cartons to her to lift her spirit.

Everyone is hallucinating in this episode. Dok Mi thinks she sees Enrique at Do Hwi's party, and Enrique thinks he sees Dok Mi at the accident. I hope the preview kiss for next week isn't a dream or day dreaming.

For all his childish behavior, at least Enrique realizes he has fallen in love even though he has to get smack to the side of his head with an automobile.

Thanks for the recaps! Can't wait until Monday comes!

Loved this episode so much. My sweet Dong Hoon looks to be on the erge of falling in love. Am hoping, anyway. And although i was shipping Ahjumma and Watanabe, I'm thinking she and the guard are gonna make a good pair.

Still don't know what Jin Rak's secret is. And not sure what Do Hwi expected to get outta that. Dok Mi leaving yes..but why? Nervous breakdown? Falling in love with Teach again?

I like the way Jin Rak and Enrique treat each other. Like honest guys who understand competition and fairplay. I've heard folks say that the reason some women can be so nasty in competition is because they don't engage in sports as boys do. Who knows? But i like the code of honor between the rivals, and I love the way Jin Rak honored Dong Hoon's drawing skills by acknowledging that Dong Hoon could draw. Heck, DH's drawing also seems to show his soul to Bleary-eyed editor. I love that woman!

So, what is it? Six more episodes to go? Lord, please don't let any weird plot points pop up. I can accept car accident...but anything outta the blue is gonna annoy me. Jin Rak, what's your secret?

For DH, I wonder if she always assumed 'the lie was the truth' and that Dok-mi really was in love with the teacher, and assumed she would jump at the chance to be with him again.

Whenever Enrique smiles, I smile, whenever he sulks or feels down, I feel the same...

I've become way too attached to the main characters now I can't wait until Monday and Tuesday (Wednesday for the English subtitles) :)

I hate how Dokmi is pushing Enrique away even though he's trying so hard to understand and see things from her perspective.
I know Dokmi's past has hurt her terribly and she is scarred but she needs to be the one to pull herself out of this depressed and locked up life. She's not a toy, she is a human so she can't live the way she does for the rest of her life. With or without Enrique and Jinrak, she needs to be the one to pull herself back together.
I close to loving Dokmi's character because she is realistic and I understand everything she's going through.

ah Jin rak -.-
I like him but what's with him lying about his true identity? I hope whoever he is, his feelings for Dokmi won't change unless Dokmi and Enrique gets together.
I hate his "I'm the first, I was here first!" pathetic excuse as to why Enrique should back off from DM.
Dude, you had 3 years before Enrique! 3!
If you truly love her, you would want her to see the beauty of the world and not let her continue to rot in her apartment believing that the whole world is cruel and that she is all alone. Even though she likes being alone most of the times, living like that is unhealthy!
If anything, I hope JR gives up on DM soon because there is only 6 episodes left ><

ENRIQUE<3 I love his persistent nature, I don't know why JR doesn't realize that E's existence in DM life is a truly good thing for her.
ah Ep 11 preview, I can't wait!!! that kiss better be real and DM please kiss back!
the writers better not troll and make E suffer amnesia or make that girl-who-looks-like-Seoyoung-from-behind fall in love with E.
I need Enrique & Dokmi to be together<3

It was sweet how Enrique got the paper plane /into/ her house while Jin Rak's milk carton was left outside as always. Jin Rak never really tries to understand her for who she really is or bring her out of her shell, which is why Enrique is so much better for her.

In the webtoon, Dok-mi is really older than Enrique but I think she's still in her 20's.

0

Required fields are marked *

I want to know that too. I feel like he's not that much younger and he was just trying to get a rise out of her before, and then it became a nickname.

I have another question: I swear I saw a bed in Dok-mi's room. Why on earth does she sleep ON THE FLOOR? Wouldn't a bed be way warmer than the floor?

0

Required fields are marked *

It's warmer on the floor maybe because it's being heated. Remember Dong Hoon complaining about the maintenance fee and the efficiency of the boiler? Boilers are being used to heat the floors in Korea.

0

Required fields are marked *

Although, yes, the bed would be warmer, the hard surface of the floor is better for your spine, especially when you've been sitting for hours and hours. It reshapes the back!

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think the nickname was a joke that stuck, too and Dok-mi is around the same age as Enrique at most - the invite Do-hwi sent Dok-mi had something about a five-year reunion, so if that means 5 years since high school she'd be 23-24 at most, or 25 if she moved into the building right after college as her first independent home and has been staying there for three years. While Enrique's '10-year first love' makes me think he's in his mid-to-late 20s, if it began when he was in his teens.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

...coming back to this later, I'm not even sure if Dok-mi actually went to college, after what she was put through in school. She probably enrolled in a programme that was online/allowed her to do her learning with minimal human contact - her shut-in/avoiding tendencies definitely predate her moving into the building.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Enrique is 9 years old when he went to Spain and after 15 years he went back to Korea based on the sypnosis. So he's 24 years old right now.

With regards to Dok Mi, if she went to college and then live independently after college, she's at least 27 years old or more than that. If you will watch the video invitaion of Do Hwi, she's inviting everyone for their 5 years in business. So if they started their business after college or during college, Do Hwi and Dok Mi are really in their late 20s. In episode 9, Enrique also called Do Hwi ajumma because she's really older than him like in the webtoon.

Mylasan - knowing what we do about Dok-mi, I'm not sure she actually went to a normal four-year Korean college at all. Can you imagine her around all those people, every day? Especially immediately after what Do-hwi did to her? I'd peg her at around 25 approx, if the apartment is her first independent home away from her grandparents.

There's something I remarked with PSH in the preview that I remarked in her dramas: when there's a kiss scene she's quite passive, she rarely touches the male, like in YAB. Her arms are always at her sides. If I were in her place. I'd touch those men as much as I could !!!!

The scene where Dok-mi was sitting on the sofa and saying in such a brittle way, "You’re all… fine. You all ask me without a care. You’re all… so cruel.” broke my heart. DAMN THOSE HEARTLESS PEOPLE! So sad that Dok-mi stepped outside of her comfort zone and got burned like that.

And webtoon editor was hilarious! Her entire entrance ("DON'T TOUCH ME! DON'T TOUCH ME! *hacking cough*) into the club and her dancing was epic. I hope someone does a compilation of all her screaming rants!

This show is a gem so far. It's not the most edge of your seat show, but it's charming and warm and just touching without being total emo fest. I love that it's touching on phobias and anxiety with Dok Mi. Kudos to the writer. Just love all the quirky characters.

All that said, the Enrique's of the world are great mood lifters...in moderation. In real life Enrique would be a great friend for Dok Mi, to pull her out and make her laugh...in scattered doses. Dok mi, no matter if she copes with her anxiety (I actually do not think she's not a complete mess no matter how it seems) needs her quiet time and her solitude. Being around him all the time would make her more anxious in the long run. Jin rak is a better fit as a long term mate for her. But that is why it is fiction and I plan to enjoy Enrique. This show does what k drama is great at with its two male leads formula-it shows that there is more than one person that is a good fit as a mate, and it has two leads that each compliment and meet different needs in the female lead character.

How about En-rak-ue - a combination of the two leads in one?

That is why Enrique is growing too in keeping with Dok-mi. He is easing up on the exuberant pretend happy because with her he is just simply genuinely happy. In reality that works perfectly.

Jin-rak as a long term partner is counter productive for both people when they finally get to the couple stage. But, to be honest I've had a difficult time envisioning their life together. I can't see them having long conversations, etc...

I agree that DM is not a "complete mess" as you put it. She is a recluse by choice. But, this is also not her real self. needing solitude does not mean that she excludes interactions and forming relationships with others. Both can co-exist. E is the person who can not only make her realize this but i feel they are a better fit because they both respond to and understand each others needs. I agree with DM that JR is basically "a good man". i think he really loves her but E makes her alive and want to experience the outside world. He opens the doors but does not force her to go through them. He just wants her to live to the fullest in the way she wants to.

Enrique showed his childishness character that's is why jin rak also answered in a childish manner saying :-

When I watch jin rak trying to pay the medical bills , digging his pockets with some korean currency and looking at his face I said that is love - a sincere man trying to help her, my heart goes plump when enrique easily took out his card to pay on her behalf.

*Sigh*
I don't know why this keeps happening to me... I always like and root for the guy that doesn't get the girl. EVERY TIME.

I've always understood and appreciated Jin-Rak's approach, thinking he was doing the right thing by letting her live as she wished to, rather than busting through her walls uninvited as Enrique did... Kills me knowing Jin-Rak made all those cute post-its, letting her be as she wanted to be, just to have another guy show up and win her heart...

I don't really understand Enrique's appeal, so I think I may have to re-watch the episodes... Maybe I missed something important that made all these other girls like him so much? This episode, at least, was a bit better for me regarding Enrique's character; I never found his cutesy routine appealing, and it's good to see a solid break away from that. I wouldn't think it was realistic if a serious, hermit-type like Dok-Mi ended up with a boisterous man-boy with little depth.

GAH! I just can't see Enrique being able to sit with Dok-Mi to have a serious, adult, deep conversation that he didn't turn into a soccer analogy. The conversation with Jin-Rak in this episode was much more realistically what I think a healthy romantic relationship should be like... at least to me.

WHAT AM I MISSING?! Please tell me!

I think it's in the way Enrique and Dok-mi complete each other. In real life it doesn't necessarily work this way (although it certainly happens): there is a certain sort of poetry in a couple where each individual has a positive attribute the other lacks. As a unit, the couple can be happy, warm, functioning. Apart, each of them loses that special piece that makes them feel like a whole creature, properly alive. Enrique has a persistence and vitality Dok-mi lacks, whereas Dok-mi has the ability to confront the raw truth that Enrique tends to run away from.
Jin-rak, however, would let Dok-mi dwell in that world she sees, and it's not a very nice one. Yes, I think they could work and even be happy. But I don't think they would help each other grow. I don't think they'd inspire each other to be all that they could possibly be.

I think that's the the ideal behind the Enrique/Dok-mi couple. They push each other to be the best they can. Jin-rak might accept Dok-mi for who she is now and not push her, but Enrique can't because he so clearly sees she's not living as the person she could and wants to be. Likewise, Dok-mi won't let Enrique wallow either.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

That is one solid remark. A couple that complete and inspire each other doesn't always happen in real life. But when they do, it's a union of souls.

And I do think, Dok-mi and Enrique have had deep, meaningful adult conversations. Their conversations are peppered with metaphors, symbols that one is more used to, which strangely the other receives well without needing translations. It must be the editor in Dok-mi and the social perceptiveness of Enrique that somehow allows the messages to be sent.

Required fields are marked *

The key is Jin-rak missed the point in thinking that Dok-mi is happy as she is and is living the life she wished. And maybe you share the same misconception as Jin-rak. Don't get mad! lol!

Dok-mi maybe reclusive now but she wasn't always that way. She is no extrovert to begin with but she was no mouse either. She's gotten used to the life she has now only by necessity because that is the safest place she knows. No one has cared enough to show her that there is safety in being part of someones life and of society and the world.

Jin-rak's post-it is very sweet but is it a realistic courtship? To begin with, did he write his name in them in the past 3 years or even on the most recent year. I'm assuming that Dok-mi thought the milkman had a crush on her. I agree that she found some sort of comfort on the daily post-its but never really felt secure enough to get it through an unlocked door. I used to wonder why she had to crouch and struggle reaching through a locked door for the milk when it's easier to open the door wide to get it. Maybe because the milk and the post-it is welcome but not the faceless milkman. lol!

I like both episodes for this week ! While I do have to admit that I miss the comical part of the earlier episodes but the serious tone is indeed needed to address the issues that they have in the drama, so it's okay. But while watching, I was in awe the whole time with the explosion of acting here, esp. by PSH and YSY. Manager-nim and Dong Hoon sub-plut is super cute as well. I am still laughing when I am thinking that it all started from Papa New Guinea. Hahaha

Watching drama, I cannot help but thinking maybe the old lady ahjuma is actually Bae Bok's mother ? If it's true then she probably blames Enrique for what Bae Bok is doing. I guess we have to wait till next week. Arghhh. The editor-nim who handles the next week previews part love to play with the audience's heart T_T

And thank you for the recap ! I was literally watching and reading the recap at the same time. It's like a drama buddy hahaha.
