Happy Friday everyone!!!
And sweet greetings from Sweden, especially from Uppsala (... I always wanted to say something like that.. :-) ).
Uppsala is a nice town and the swedish people too. Unfortunately I could not see much of the city. It is a business trip, so work comes first.
And I am not up to date with kdramas. My business trip ends on Sunday. I think, I will watch Level7servant - I missed some episodes. Hope, I see the funny types with the ugly wigs again... .
And maybe maybe I will watch FBND. Or I will wait until the end and celebrate my special kdrama-FBND-weekend. But I am tired, so I can't decide yet.
I wish you a nice weekend.
I am pretty hard to shock, having been around the world 3 times, 2 county fairs, etc. but that one was just repulsive to me.
A pretty old one (2004?), but it was my first subtitled Asian drama-rom-com, and it put me off of them for at least two years, did not come back to them until 2009.
Strange, I actually like that movie. I like both actors, the plot was digestible since I'm a Regency novel reader and historically in my culture, young age marriage was an established practice. I didn't like that the girl was rowing between two rivers but hey let's put it to age and immaturity.
First time commenter, long time stalker here...just wanted to thank you for your hard work. You have saved my marriage and my family many times by cutting my drama viewing time down from 16 hours (average) to 2. I will only invest time (that I really don't have) in dramas that have been recapped by you and seem interesting enough to watch after having read the recap. You are all extremely funny, witty and insightful, a true pleasure to read. You are the site I turn to for Kdrama recommendations. Thank you. Because of your dedication, I can remain a semi-functional mother of four and wife of a man-child.
Hello Open Threaders!
This week has filled me with FBND feels and opinions that I must release here. Excuse me in advance for my rants...
1. So much win mixed with so much that would usually have me scratching my head. The writers could run a much tighter ship, but with all the extra dead end characters I still don't have any moments that I feel forced to fast forward. That's saying something b/c I'm a natural fast forwarder.
2. Is Kouki Mizuta (Watanabe Ryu) the start of a K-Drama importing trend? Hallyu has been exporting for some time now, I feel that the injection of some actors from Taiwan and Japan and other countries would be awesome. It would be welcome in my book because it would allow for a great variety of different looks. K-dramas are stuck in a rut aesthetically. Mizuta is sooo cute but is still looks vastly different compared to his fellow K-drama actors who have definitely had work done or are immaculately manscaped. I mean c'mon, Jin Rok is supposed to be gruff and slovenly. I look back at oldies and it seems that actors have carbon copy haircuts for every show. Look at the tragedy that is Lee Jung Jin's hair cut for A Hundred Year's Inheritance. His head is fighting that haircut. He needs more hair!!!
3. The preview kiss that hasn't happened yet. Will it happen for real or is Enrique having a coma induced dream? Either way her lifeless arms during the embrace would have been off-putting, if I didn't remember this is a girl who, 9 episodes ago, was a social recluse. The way she dived into that tear-filled kiss was... squee inspiring. No wincing or fish pucker in the style of GHS! And although I didn't see much movement between their lips, the moment seemed sweet and if there are 4-5 more episodes (depending on if the kiss happens in ep. 11 or 12) then there is much more time for much more lip locking...right!? Yoon Shi Yoon should bring his A-game for this. We've seen his magic in Me, Too Flower.
I agree that crossover asian actors should be more utilized. TWDramas do this with Korean actors (think Siwon), so why not other countries / genres? I think it's a growing, and welcome, trend.
This is my first time seeing Kouki Mizuta act, even though I watch a decent amount of JDoramas, too. He's so cute, and his slight off-pronunciation of hangeul makes me hope that when/if I learn the language, it won't sound too harsh on the ear to a native speaker!
I have tried these
DramaFever
NetFlix
Hulu
DramaCrazy
Vicki
YouTube
Gooddrama.net
DramaFans.org
I am interested in KDrama/TDrama/JDrama/CDrama ... well pretty much open to new horizons ... and I some times have trouble locating dramas that I have heard of on the big three DramaFever/NetFlix/Hulu.
Happy Friday, everyone! Gah, I always seem to come late. xD
I've still been enjoying Flower Boy Next Door immensely. One thing I've liked about the Oh Boy series is that they really get the casting down. I think that makes the dramas all the more enjoyable. Do Hwi really took a trip downward this past week; I didn't see her going that far but it still seemed natural for her character. I think the thing with Jin Rak is that he doesn't have that intuitiveness that Enrique and Dok Mi share. It's coming out more and more in situations that Dok Mi needs comforting, or the scene when he confronts Enrique about coming back, that he doesn't really understand what's going on. You could say that yes, Enrique doesn't always either, but he sees the depth of Dok Mi's pain because he understands what it means to hurt on that level. Jin Rak doesn't, and that's not his fault, but it's really a setback to Dok Mi ever healing if she doesn't have someone like Enrique to understand and draw her out.
And that writer noona KILLED ME in the club scene. I had to rewatch it like 15x. I love her!!!
I keep putting off Shut Up Flower Boy Band, because for some reason it doesn't grab me right now. It may just be all the melos and whatnot that just passed through dramaland, or maybe real life, because I remember really liking it when I watched the first few eps. So I'm trying to decide what drama I want to watch in between FBND eps...Baby Faced Beauty (for something just cute and there), Secret Garden, Best Love....Aigo, how will I decide?
Hi! Nice to meet you all. I don't know how this thread works, is there a time limit or something like a chat room or just a random thread?
I'm in New Zealand but I have been following dramabeans since java was the only writer. Not much for comments though since I prefer to read then go back to watching my videos. As I was reading through most of the post, I found that I have actually watched almost all the above recommended dramas or either sampled them before going on a rain check. I must have had plenty of time all these years or just addicted I guess, more of the latter. I remember cramming 24 episodes of Princess Hours on a day, which is doable if one promises not to sleep. lol!
Alas, that was back in Uni when it's possible to catch some snooze in the middle of a lecture for 100 students as long you have the technique down. Now a days, I'd loose my livelihood if I snooze on the side.
Admittedly, I am a closet otaku. Currently watching FBND and loving it. Still sampling other dramas on the side, some Jdramas, Tvb's, Taiwanese ones when bored. It's the annual Naughty Girl's week in my town so I'm dreading the expected influx of intoxicated ladies. But, what's a girl to do to be naughty?
English is not my first language but I have watched more dramas with subtitles than the one in my own language. Funny that! Hope to get to know some of you here!
I meant to ask but how is it the some user names are yellow/gold?
Hello unik! Welcome here!
OT is opened for the whole week and is valid basically until the next one arrives. That said, it's true than most commenters post on Friday and on the WE.
It's old school: You can do a touch and go with a random post of yours, write an essay about your life or whatever you want. Or you can start a discussion with someone here. 50 first comments are on page one and are the most popular but the hardcore fans read everything. Cough *Not time consuming at all*cough. As you could see, people talk about almost everything, from dramas to Kpop to cooking or work life. There is people from all around the world living in harmony (most of the time) and this is why the OT and dramabeans are a precious place. Talk of a nice community! By the way, speaking of naughty girls, we had quite raunchy sessions on the past here so you would need big guns to scare us. Lol.
About having read Eng subs than ones in your first language: I totally get it since in my country (France), we don't sub. We dub TV shows.
About the names in yellow: If you click on them you will land on the blog of the authors. A lot of the people here also have a twitter or facebook account where the party keeps on going 7/7 & 24hrs a day. The tree hides the forest. ^^
OK. Need to go to bed now! Again, nice to meet you. See you around later! :)
That was a fantastic welcome speech and beginner's primer, Mysti!
unik...We love new people! I'm not here as often as I used to be, but the OT still feels like home. And, as Mysti said, many of us continue the joys of OT on Twitter and Facebook. Be careful, though, the OT is almost as addicting as k-dramas. Its not unusual for hours to go by without even noticing. :D
And what Mystisith and CMRPRindle says is correct. I tend to check in about once a day during the week to see what's new.
You'll find that a lot of people use screen names on the first line of any post. That is in order to use the "find" button on your web brower to pinpoint your entries and the responses to those entries.
A lot of people use some common abbreviations (FBND for Flower Boy Next Door, for example) and they are pretty easy to pick up.
And don't be afraid to ask questions or request clarification on someone's post. Being a melting pot of different cultures and levels of English, the OT post can sometimes be confusion, but we are all willing and ready to answer any questions!
Hi unik from NZ! I spent a month on the south island a couple of years ago and loved it. I stayed with a friend in Christchurch, and from there ventured all around the island. Loved Oamaru and the blue penguins (did some painting there), and Queenstown is gorgeous at the base of the Remarkables range and awesome lake. I remember having a decent Thai meal there.
I had to look up otaku~
It is always fun to hear from another kdramafanaddict! Totally cannot wait until Monday for FBND. Oddly, I am in the mood for Secret Garden re-watch tonight (just finished Okusen -the movie and L7CS - which gets better each episode. Happy weekend!
Welcome to OT unik! I think uni life is almost made for kdrama addiction, especially if you ever have days of no class lol (and I'm another one whose fixes are severely curtailed by work). Hope you come back to OT and hang out with us again next week, this is the most fun part of DB and a great place to rant or rave about whatever you're loving/hating right now, drama-related or not.
Hi everyone. It's been ages since I've been here, but I'm just dropping by very quickly to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year.
Another year, another reunion eve dinner....yep, tonight's The Big Night, where relatives travel from all over the country to gather together for the Big Feast.
It's also the time of the year to:
*smile and smile until your cheeks ache at That Relative That You Hate Absolutely Hate as he delivers a long lecture (as he does every year) about the symbolic and auspicious meaning of each dish that appears on the table, and as the dishes keep appearing throughout the dinner, that's practically listening to him jabber on and on the whole night, omg! Can someone just clobber this guy with the Emperor's Chicken already!
*try your damnest to stop your eyes from glazing over as he switches to his pet topic: The Importance of Chinese Herbs in Today's Toxic World: Balancing The East and West.....please, Grandma, do us all a favour, just stuff that Lion's Head meatball into his mouth!....I could do it, but you're sitting right next to him. Appreciate it, thanks.
* hold a silent conversation with him inside your brain to stop yourself from going over the edge as he drones on and on: DUDE STUFF IT OR I SWEAR I'M GONNA DUMP THAT PLATE OF PEKING DUCK ON YOUR SANCTIMONIOUS HEAD.
*raise eyes heavenward and mutter a silent prayer of thanks as Jabberwocky finally SHUTS UP and remembers he's supposed to eat, not talk!!!!
* laugh uproariously over the lamest jokes which you hear EVERY YEAR - this requires years of practice, which I have .
* be alert; know when to stop laughing: one year, I laughed so much I was the only one still laughing after the whole table had fallen silent....yeah, you can guess - weird stares all around
*surreptitiously stuff all that mouth-watering food into your mouth when no one's looking....why do those crispy buttered prawns finish SO FAST every year????
*burp extra long and hard into your napkin while you make a big show of wiping your mouth delicately
Note of caution here: at times your burp may explode in a most revolting and bestial manner - never fear, just start coughing to cover up....deep raking coughs are the best( korean melos helped me perfect the art)
*restrain yourself from opening your mouth humungously big and yawning out loud once you've gorged yourself sick on all that nice food
*enjoy that unique half-awake, half-sleeping state (shades of Cheongdamdong Alice?) where your mind and tummy are reduced to a delicious hazy stupor and your eyelids grow very, very heavy....
*close your eyes to block out the final horrifying images of toothpicks being passed around the table and EVERYONE picking their teeth IN SYNC as another Reunion Dinner concludes thank the Lord.
Quick add: I started I am Sam last night. Funny thing, but despite zaniness, the kids were more normal to me than the ones in Scool 2013. They seemed like real teenagers as opposed to tall elementary school kids with grown up responsibilities. So, maybe the love lines should've been included in School after all? But then no time for bromance. Argh, so torn...
I'm here, waiting for the roads to be a bit more clear and drinking morning coffee. I think the coffee to be the determining factor for when I actually get to doing the things I NEED to be doing. The side roads may not be clear for a few days, but I think the main ones are good. Its clear and sunny too, so looking good for outdoor activities.
I have been reading a book called Chinatown by Gwen Kincaid and recently picked up Snakehead by Patrick Radden Keefe. Usually I'm a rom-com girl, but these stories are really complex (being real). Perhaps that's imprecise, the feeling I get from these stories is really complex-the stories are told simply in journalistic style. I feel like the 80-90s human/drug smuggling should have a drama written about it. Something akin to Law and Order, Homeland, Breaking Bad, and Giant. (If that were possible). The makjang elements would make actual sense for once. Plus infinite work for all nationalities of actors, but especially for Chinese and South Asian.
Whenever they talk about Khun-sa I picture Bad Daddy from City Hunter. Although, in comparison, Bad Daddy was a small fish.
I missed most of the 20th century, and the time I spent in the 20th, I was very self absorbed being underage and all, so this is all new and exciting stuff. I had little idea of how smuggling actually occurred on a world wide scale, although I understood things weren't all sweetness, light, puppies, and kittens in many parts of the world.
How did my Super Ladies know I've been hunting down some Seo In-guk songs lately?.. yeah, Answer Me 1997 withdrawal still in effect. Haha~
I know I've been out of the loop year 2012. Been busy with life and death or some. It already says a lot when I can vaguely remember three shoes in my year 2012, those are The Moon That Embraces the Sun, Shut Up Flower Boy Band, and Answer Me 1997. Year 2012 must have been my worst record keeping of unfinished/dropped dramas in my life's history. Well, pretty much all avatars to shows in DB's 'recently completed' recapped series I have one by one dropped. I feel bad, I do. Life wouldn't permit it, so thanks to year 2013, I hope this will turn a new leaf and I will gain interest in shows airing not to distant future.
Suddenly, I feel like I'm in a silent film, a little wind chime notes a reminder around this time is DB's 6th Anniversary! Happy Day!! Congratulations. Shhhhh, I'll keep it my lips zipped tight, while my fingers are doing the chitter-chatters. Pahehe~
Thanks so, so much for what y'all do in here. My life would get a little more miserable without your fierce recaps and reviews. And life is a tad fun listening to podcasts while getting tipsy with a recorder tracking score to your every giggle.
Be seeing y'all more often, I hope. And keep yourself warm and safe from Nemo's fury. Happy Lunar New Year Everyone! XOXOXO
This might be out of topic but i have not been watching any korean dramas lately after WR, but I've been watching a lot of Japanese movies: my recommendations:
1. A taste of tea
2. Crying out love in the middle of the earth
3.the letter
4. 1 million yen and the nagushima woman
They are pretty good. The actors are not as pretty as korean actors ,but they can really deliver! Now I'm into watching samurai movies like 13 assassins and harakiri. Yay!

What brought you back to rom-com in 2009?

Happy New Year, everyone!!!! Gong Xi Fa Chai!!!!!

Happy Saturday, OT!

Yay!

Vampire Idol question: how the heck do they all fit in that piano?
Also, Yubi is super-cute. If I wasn't a woman in her 30s, I'd want to dress like her.
Also FYI for other T.O.P fans: 71: into the fire is subbed on YouTube.
