Yoo Seung-ho’s last pre-army photo shoot

I know what you’re thinking: This kid is waaaay too young to be having a “last” anything. But read it and weep (perhaps even literally): Yoo Seung-ho, at the tender age of 19, is already being featured in his “last photo shoot before army duty” with March’s issue of Bazaar.

Of course, whether this actually IS his last photo shoot before army duty remains to be seen; remember Kim Nam-gil popping up with a last photo shoot before army duty at least a half-dozen times? So I’m half-expecting to see a few more for Yoo Seung-ho, which gets no complaints from me. We’ll need it to console ourselves while he goes off and gets his army abs, and then he’ll come back with his many “first photo shoot after army duty” dealios and we can laugh at how much of a little boy he once was.

Still, how crazy is it that he’s 19 and already has the full leading-man filmography of an actor heading off in his prime (aka 28 years old with the army countdown clock ticking ever louder with each day)? His credits include Immortal Lee Soon-shin, Sad Sonata, King and I, Legend, Queen Seon-deok, God of Study, Flames of Ambition, Warrior Baek Dong-soo, Operation Proposal, Arang and the Magistrate, and I Miss You. He’s played a king at least four times (and a god once — twice if you count that whole god of studying business). How accomplished do YOU feel? *weeps into cornflakes*

Yoo Seung-ho’s Bazaar photo shoot comes with accompanying interview. It appears his enlistment date is not yet fixed (or announced, at least), though we know it’ll be in the first half of this year. He reportedly does not intend to apply for the entertainers’ unit, wanting to serve in active duty with the army, or on the front line.

For some reason I'm just not worried about this kid. For some, a 2-year absence can really affect a career. But for him, I think it'll be good. After two years, he'll be able to choose what kind of image he wants. He can choose to start off with second lead territory and still rule it; or simply jump off to lead status. Either way, I'm sure projects will be lined up for him. And by golly, when he returns, he's still a young actor.

This, really - this is a genius move, and I applaud him. We adore him already, he's a success already, he's going to go away with noonas waiting eagerly for his return, and when he comes back he'll be barely 21 and have the REST OF HIS INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL ADULT MANHOOD to become the huge star we rightfully expect him to be, with NO interruptions. Smooth sailing right to the top, Baby Boy. I hope you get it!

Hush. He inspires therapy-inducing conflicts in my heart. He's the age of the boys my daughter was raised with, went through school with. I look at them and some are handsome and some are not but NONE make me feel anything but affection. Or dislike, in some cases.

But this one here. It's all the mom stuff PLUS the noona stuff and I just need him to go away for a little bit so I can catch my breath.

I think this is a super smart move. I've said this before, but most of our 20-something male heartthrobs are getting dangerously close to their army days. When they all leave in one swoop, there will be a gaping hole for talented male first leads. If the younger talented ones leave now, they'll be back just in time to fill that need with washboard abs to boot!

0

Required fields are marked *

Don't worry about a gaping hole. There is no chance of that, even if, as you say, all leave in one sweep.

There are so many more -Bins and -Gis and -Hwans and -Seoks waiting in line ready to step in and take over at a moment's notice than the drama industry knows what to do with. In the current South Korean economy, this (along with the opportunity to make big bucks by winning CF contracts) has become a most highly sought-after profession. And then, there are those "idols" looking to become "heartthrobs" as their retirement or transition gig.

As such, I would rather see new ones in every new drama, if not every night of the week, than the same old ones. Unless it is Lee Min Ho.

The real problem in the South Korean drama industry is the dearth of girls who can play leading ladies plausibly, even though they don't get drafted to the military duty.

I think there's a lot of talented, beautiful under30 actresses as well. It's just that DBies and drama-watchers in general are usually straight women (enthusiastically so, in the case of DB), so the focus skews that way both on this website and in the industry.

He ain't gone yet, and I am thankful because it's tough trying to prepare myself for the inevitable. I've been watching him rock the Puppy King Sejong role in "The King and I" these days, and all I can say is (in Dongsoo-yah voice):

I think this is a brilliant career move for this kid. He's already acting at the level of a leading man, but at 19 is still too young to pull off some of these lead roles. This gives him 2 years to grow up, and he'll return right as the Lee Min Ho's, Song Joong Ki's, Kim Soo Hyun's et al (I say with a wince) will be preparing to leave. Perfect timing for him to swoop right back into his leading man career and he won't have to prepare to leave at his peak. He can just keep going to be the wonderful actor we all know he can be. Sky is the limit for this guy.

I'm with him on going in early and getting it out of the way. He's had some great roles so its not like he has to prove anything still. His looks will only get better as he loses the babyface that we all love. Tone that body that already makes us older women sigh and that time will be gone in a flash.

They basically be the PR people of the army. Some (like Lee Junki) are assigned to go around the country and talk nice things about the army to entice early enlistments. Some, like Boom, Lee Dongwook, Lee Donggun, Andy, Tony An, Kim Jisuk, etc., get tasked to host military events or do variety shows that are meant to entertain the troops. Others, like Joo Jihoon and Leeteuk, get tasked to be in military plays or musicals.

Basically, whatever they normally do as celebrities, they do for free for the military.

Wow, I didn't realize he was so young. I thought he was in his 20's already.

I've only seen him in Arang. He hasn't left a major impression on me yet.

Those ~2 years will fly by for him and it'll be interesting to see what new roles he'll take on after he's out of the army.

Love this kid! He's one, smart cookie to take the long view and set his priorities. More actor/idol young men should take note of this and follow.

Had to laugh at JB's comment of the suspicious 'last' shoot of YSH or KNG before entering the military - just brought to mind the (seemingly) dozens of 'last' events for the over-publicized SJ Leeteuk. God - it was like he was NEVER going to leave!

Good luck for the next 24 months, pretty boy. May you fill out, abs-up and have a successful military career!

This is a smart move, and a good one on his part - he's so incredibly talented, but his age and youthful looks really work against him sometimes (he very nearly pulled off playing a 25-year-old in I Miss You, but not quite).

Two years out and he'll be only 21 when he returns - most actors haven't even graduated to playing adults at that age, but something tells me a post-army Yoo Seung-ho will have no problems in that department, and it'll be good to have him back when all the '86/'87-ers have gone off to military service too.

Also, MS is an abberation by now. With all my respect, wars are not made or won by "mere" soldiers anymore: They happen in the cyberspace.
From what I could hear, the new President of SK has in project to shorten the MS of 3 months pretty soon. I say the sooner, the better.

I'm really proud of Seung Ho. I'm impressed with his body of work, but also with his maturity in choosing to do his military service now. There are so many actors that have put it off or tried to avoid it or went the easy route once enlisted, and I'm glad that he's not falling into any of those pitfalls. This reminds me alot of my own children leaving for college. They're off for a few years and then we get to see what they've become afterward. I'm excited to see how awesome Seung Ho can be when his service is over.

I agree with this being a smart move, but a part of me wanted to see more of him acting in the right age. He only had a few dramas where he acted as a teenager. I know he is totally heading for that big leading male status but, once he starts acting adult roles it'd would be weird to go back and do teen roles again (I hope not). So, when he comes back from the army... well he's still a kid. hahaha why am I fussing over this. Oh well, at least he does not have a time bomb hanging over him like all the other actors do.

His eyes and smile make him unique in being good-looking. Once he comes back in two years he should be even better with the added maturity and army experience. This photo shoot gives only an inkling of what he will be in the future.
