A Dramabeans Meetup? Vote!

We’ve had a lot of requests over the years for a Dramabeans Meetup, and while that seemed like a good idea in theory, we were always daunted by the reality of prying ourselves away from our screens, putting on pants and venturing into the sunlight. And then somebody suggested, “Nighttime could work and pants are still optional.” The idea was too genius not to consider.

So before we get really serious about putting on pants, we thought we’d ask you if you’d be interested in coming to such an event, to gauge interest. Because it would be really sad to be the only two people at our birthday party. [I dunno whatchoo talkin’ ‘bout. My mom will be there. *throws confetti* -GF]

As it turns out, we’ll be heading over to New York next month — who knew there were classes on Hallyu now? — which strikes us as a good time to test out this Meetup experiment. Unless the poll results say otherwise, that is, in which case you can stop reading now and we’ll turn away to cry into our ice cream. Votes?

Clearly we know exactly what we are doing and have no need of any help whatsoever in planning such an event because of our extraordinary foresight and stellar planning skills… but okay, we’ll open ourselves up to offers of help, if you insist. Does anyone have great ideas for meeting places? I’m sure we can scrounge something up, but right now our best idea is huddling somewhere in Central Park, fighting with the squirrels for space. Those bastards can be vicious.

And if you do think the Meetup is a fun idea but wish it were in your hometown, tell us where you’d like us to go next, and maybe we can make it happen!

I vote Seattle/Portland for an in-between spot for SF and Vancouver. If it's Portland we can go get a maple bacon at Voodoo donuts. In Seattle we could stop by Lunchbox Laboratory then ride the Seattle Great Wheel-switch that- wheel first, then lunch, easier on the tummy that way.

Houston, TX!!!!!! Please come! I refresh the blog at least 12 times a day and am an avid advocate of the blog! If anyone is as much of a k-drama-crack addict as I am in Houston, I'd gladly host drama discussion group nights, too! Like book clubs, only with dramas of very, very, very good-looking people you can see on screen and don't have to imagine in your head. And if Dramabeans ever come to Houston, I'll host/volunteer/do slave work/bring hard-A!!!! Come!

Boo. I'm from the east coast, but nowhere near NY. And I'm actually going to Houston in a few weeks to visit my best friend. So yeah. Boo.

BUT! I do like the idea of a live chat! Via google/youtube. :)

or (even better)
San Diego

I would come in a heart beat if you held it in any of these places. I would pull some strings and skip my classes just to meet all of you guys. Please do it on the west coast.

But I can't drink, since I'm underage...though I can make exceptions. I'm sure the law won't mind.

Unfortunately, I live on the opposite side of the country or I would come. My brains probably would have exploded during the shift from cyberworld to reality, so maybe it's a good thing?

I think a live podcast show would be awesome (like Radiolab's In the Dark or the ones Stuff You Should Know does at Comic Con) and then you could upload it for those of us that can't be there. As long as we're all tossing out wishes here. :)

I bet if you contacted a KSA or similar at a school in New York, say NYU, they would be able to arrange for an auditorium/meetup. You have a big enough site that someone is bound to help you plan. Otherwise, I would suggest looking at large open table restaurants such as Radegast or Biergarten. Good luck!

Agreed. Also, another thing to think about is whether food will be provided (in which case, people will have to pay), or if you want to go to a restaurant for some bibimbap/bulgogi/Jjajangmyun...

If you're all feeling broke as, then you could issue a challenge for everyone to cook and bring one Korean dish. This site is great for recipes

Linky link: http://www.beyondkimchee.com

(her chili bulgogi sauce smells frightening to an amateur - http://www.beyondkimchee.com/chili-bibim-sauce/), but is more addictive than crack, according to everyone I've ever made it for)

If you did it that way, you could have a google doc that only you and GF could edit but everyone could see and once people confirmed, they e-mailed you what they were bringing and you could update the documents, to avoid too many people bringing kimchi (though you can never have enough in my opinion). Complete cooking novices could bring rice. Great way to start discussion and that way, using the park would be a viable option (picnic!), though wet weather plan will be needed (I don't know the area, so I can't help in that regard).

I think finding a noraebang/karoke bar would be a great idea but might eliminate all underage Beanies (don't know what the laws are there). You could probably get sponsors too, depending on the numbers.

Anyone need hiking gear...? :)

I hope this helps a little on the practical side and then any NYers could chip in with more of their city savvy knowledge of great places to hit up. Even though I won't be there (I'm in Paris/London), I definitely want it to happen. Pics! Pics for everyone! Even if the same doesn't go for pants!

It would be totally awesome if you guys did a meetup in nyc! Even though I live in New York, I actually have no one else to talk about dramas with so this would be a great opportunity to meet other addicts (like you guys!) and vent or bond or whatever

I would go in an heartbeat (if I was single and not the mother of two youngsters) but sadly I live in Seattle and my husband is extremely tolerant of my kdrama addiction but I think he would draw the line at my jetting off to NYC for a meetup. Now if you did LA (half of my family and the MIL) or Chicago (the other half of my family) I would be there with bells on (and pants!). I would swing up to Vancouver for a Canadian meetup. Regardless I think you ladies (classy as always) are very sweet to extend this offer to your fan base and as the events of the last week have shown we are a very loyal group. Hope to see many photos of all the fun!

I'm in for NYC. If I can make it there for Dr Who events, I can certainly hop a train there for you girls (and guys).

The Whovians who meet up regularly in NYC use a Pub. If the group will be small, that is probably the least expensive option. If you folks are staying in a hotel during your visit, we could coordinate for the visitors for the meeting to all get rooms there. I know NYC hotels are pricey, but room share is always an option.

I am totally available to help with logistics. You've got my email, please contact me direct.

P.S. Tell me more about this Hallyu class. Sounds interesting.

What a super idea!

I live partway between New York and Philadelphia, and would love to come to a beanfest in either place. Baltimore or Boston are probably too far afield, tho. How about Fort Lee (Fort Yi, as my wife calls it; see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koreatown,_Fort_Lee for info) at the western end of the George Washington Bridge?

God, I hope I don't have a business trip or something conflicting!
