Flower boy next door Yoon Shi-yoon for CeCi

Aw, it’s Ke-geum-ie! It’s going to take me a while before I stop seeing Yoon Shi-yoon as his Flower Boy Next Door character, not that I ever want to. He really took adorable to new heights in that role. The show might’ve fallen short in the end, but it did leave some memorable characters behind, and Yoon Shi-yoon’s Enrique really takes the cake. (The quirky, oddly-shaped toothache-inducing cake, but who cares about that in the face of this much Cute?) Here he is in a spread for CeCi Campus, looking as impish as ever and playing up the charm.

The 27-year old actor said in an interview with Newsen that his personality isn’t anything like his Flower Boy Next Door character, but that he does identify with Enrique’s man-child (what he calls adult-child) in-between-ness. Fitting, since that seems to be exactly where he is right now on the actor spectrum, and I like that he plays to it instead of trying to outgrow it too quickly.

Yoon: “A lot of people saw the bouncing Ke-geum-ie and asked how I acted a character whose personality was the total opposite of my own. But I have that adult-child side in me too. Ke-geum is an adult-child, and a young prince [he means a la “The Little Prince,” which he mentions as a source of inspiration] who looks upon the lives of adults. Ke-geum-ie is that kind of character.”

He continues: “Everyone has an adult-child inside of them too. But society tells us that we have to hurry up to become adults and hold certain qualifications in one hand and duty in the other, in order to be impressive. It would be nice to enjoy being an adult-child. That an adult-child can give happiness too — that’s what I wanted to portray as an actor.”

Well then I’d call Ke-geum-ie a raging success on that score. Thanks for the happy.

Wait, he's 27 years old? Not that it matters...he has a total baby face.

And I'm dying from the cute...who else is dying from the cute?

But being a flower boy, it is a matter of time before the bloom is off. Just like with girls.

In some photos, I cannot even tell if the person in the photo is a boy or a girl.

That's just another trait of being a flower boy. So pretty that they can be almost prettier than girls.

People always say that and that is SOOOO NOT true.

Yes - I get it that some females like their guys "safe" and androgynous looking, but there's no way androgynous looking guys like Yoon Shi-yoon look prettier than a Kim Tae-hee, Shin Min-ah, etc.

These androgynous looking guys all look a bit weird and to most, conventionally handsome guys like Oh Ji-ho, Kim Sung-soo, Won Bin, etc. look more "pretty" (in the way that a George Clooney or Brad Pitt is a "pretty boy" - meaning good-looking but not feminine/androgynous).

Put a wig, make-up and a dress on Yoon Shi-yoon and he would look like an androgynous guy in drag and not a pretty girl.

And really - he's 27? (He has the build of a 12 yr old boy.)

Eh, it's neither nor, just laying it out there.

Song Jong-ki, Kim Bum (in his younger years), Yeo Jin-goo, etc. are actually "pretty boys" - having good features, but still having that "boyish" look.

Yoon Shi-yoon and others like him, otoh, have that weird androgynous look (which in no way makes them "pretty" like a pretty woman).

0

No. He has the body of a 27 year old man, since he is a 27 year old man. It just so happens that the bodies of 27 year old men can include a range of appearance wider than you appreciate. That doesn't mean that suddenly his physical existence is impossible or wrong in some way, as your verbal de-aging of him suggests.

0

.........well, our boy's doppelganger Lee Jun-ki came back from military service with the bloom off but HOTTER THAN EVER, so I'd say this is patently false.

Ooh did someone mention Jun ki? Loved loved him in Arang and the Magistrate. And I think he is one of those rare men who manage both - the young, cute androgynous look and the manly appearance - well.

I think this Yoon Shi Yoon photo shoot is simply amazing. I won't forget Enrique any time soon, that's for sure. He made a seemingly annoying character so lovable and endearing.

just a question, does the korean pop culture discourage hairy legs for men? or are korean men naturally not hairy (AT ALL) in general?

i mean, i don't think i've ever taken notice of korean male celebrity with hairy legs and that makes me think it's because hairy legs don't actually exist in this side of the world.

I've seen a few with hairy legs, lower legs anyway. I think in general Asians have less body hair than, say,Caucasians. Fine by me! While I do enjoy a well-defined happy trail and perhaps a bit of hair on the chest, whisker-burn and bear-like men are not a big turn on :)

I think it's just an Asian thing (as opposed to just a Korean thing). I'm Asian and my legs are as bare as can be. But my older brother got some hairy ass legs. But my dad's legs are also bare. It's weird. I think we just tend to be less hairy though in general. Some of my friends who are also Asian can't even grow facial hair haha.

why cant we all just be "a person". impressive just by living our lives, being an individual.
it is hard when someone says " you are worthless, no one needs you, cause you have no job / money" or "you are uncool, cause you are not like ME!" man, child, i think it is also meant in the sense of "playing happily togewther with everyone.

This term "Flower boy/boys"..where did it originate? Did the Korean drama coin this term or is it there in English dictionary? Maybe some one could shed light on this. the first time I ever heard of that phrase was when I watched Flower boy Ramyun and then I keep seeing the phrase but in relation to Korean celebrities only. thanks!

Required fields are marked *

The first time I heard about it is from the English translation of Japan's comic series Hana Yori Dango (Dumplings Over Flowers - a proverb about choosing practical things over aesthetics). The characters for "dumplings" were altered to read like "boys" (danshi), so it means something like choosing the boys over the flowers. Like Flower Boys are guys who are more attractive than flowers. Opposite of which, I think, are the Beast Men.

Required fields are marked *

Flower Boy is an ancient term. Google Hwarang. I do not know what started it in the current pop culture manifestation, but Hana Yori Dango is a good bet. In pop culture context my understanding is that Flower Boys are young, very beautiful, usually metrosexual, meaning fashion conscious, stylish, well groomed, Asian men.

I think Hana Yori Dango for the manga purpose was multi-faceted.

Hana Yori Dango=Dumplings Over Flowers=Boys over Flowers=Practical Over Aesthetics=Beauty is only skin deep=the boys were more than just pretty and rich, they were human beings.

AND

Hana Yori Dango=Dumplings Over Flowers=Boys Over Flowers=Practical Over Aesthetics=Beauty is only skin deep=Bros over Hos.

AND

Hana Yori Dango=Dumplings Over Flowers=Practical Over Aesthetics=Beauty is only skin deep=the strong enduring weed over a fragile hot house flower aka Makino/Shancai/JanDi

Does wearing or not wearing makeup change your gender or your sex?

If a woman doesn't wear make up, does she stop being a woman? Does the state of your gender/sex increase or decrease as you apply or remove cosmetics?

What's the Female/Male vs. Cosmetics Formula?
- Foundation + lipstick = 50% Woman
- Foundation + lipstick + eyeliner = 80% Woman
- No make up + the sweat from hunting animals = 100% Dudebro

I'm unclear about the math, actually...

There's nothing wrong with your first sentence about your personal preferences. It's the second sentence that's offensive. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a man wearing make up, stage make up or street make up, and it does not lessen his state of being a man. By implying so you have not only insulted men who wear make up but also women who don't as if their genders change because of some cosmetic usage.

I remember seeing him on the FBND Strong Heart special and his personality is indeed the total opposite of Enrique - the serious kinda guy who carries a book with him wherever he goes. I think this just proves that he does indeed possess the acting skills to pull any role off. And omg he is such a baby face.
