Han Ji-hye headlines I Summon You, Gold

Weekend drama I Summon You, Gold is back in the casting game, after having lost its leading man Lee Jong-hyuk (booooo, one strike, Show) when it jumped production companies. Now it has a leading lady in Han Ji-hye (May Queen), who will actually be playing two characters in the show. Uhhh… is this a twins-separated-at-birth thing? It’s described as a satirical comedy, so at least it won’t be a melo twins-separated-at-birth thing… I think.

The “human drama” is about the struggling working, middle class in contemporary society. Han Ji-hye will play the heroine, Jung Mong-hee, who once dreamed of becoming a jewelry designer, but now runs an accessories stand in the street. She’s your typical Candy — hardworking, steadfast, and always optimistic despite her troubles. And then she’ll ALSO play a chaebol daughter-in-law, Yoona, who has the same face as Mong-hee. So… we’re going with inexplicable doppelgänger? Really?

Based on that setup we’re basically going to get a prince and pauper scenario, yeah? So what, Alice in Cheongdam-dong if Alice had a lookalike whose life she could take over instead? I’m hoping there’s (a) a logical explanation for the how of it all; and (b) a point other than It’s awesome to be rich. If played for the comedy, it could be wacky fun. But if played for the you-stole-my-face-and-my-life (not to mention husband, eep) makjang, then it sounds totally insane.

Sohn Dam-bi (Light and Shadow) is also considering the drama, but hasn’t confirmed. There isn’t much information yet on which character she’d play if cast. I Summon You, Gold follows Rascal Sons and premieres in April on MBC.

This sounds more like a female version of Cinderella Man to me *shudders*. From the story, I'll probably avoids this - but I may well be sucked back in if they choose the right leading man...

Maybe it's not fair to her, but I'm going to avoid this after the sinking ship that was May Queen.

Sounds like same old same old. Where is the twist? I'll check the first episode then probably ditch in the first 10 minutes.

Not the Annie above, but I'm a sucker for telenovela-ish storylines done RIGHT. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of Han Ji Hye - I kind of wish Son Dambi had gotten a shot at the lead role instead but I'll stick to hoping that she's not a bitchy second lead type.

May Queen was horrible. My wife is currently watching Sweet18 (2004) .

Han Ji-hye at 20 yrs old sure was cute. It took me a moment to realize who she was .

I find Han Jihye endearing in most of her roles, but particularly her older ones where she was just a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed young actress. So while I do think she has her Candy personas down pat, I preferred her so much more as a reckless juvenile a la Sweet 18.

I haven't seen Light and Shadow. What else has Sohn Dam Bi been in?

Son Dam Bi was also in "Dream" with Kim Bum. She's also a singer and probably more famous for that.

Is Han jihye considered a bad actress? I watched a bit of May Queen and she made me cringe in some scenes when she's acting shocked in a way that seemed cartoonish and over the top that I had to wonder if she's considered a bad or a good actress.

A bad script and PD will do that even to good actors/actresses.

Han Ji Hye was cute in Sweet 18....

I always liked HJH (btw, she's a fab dancer and has a great sense of humor), but she needs a good project, preferably a well-written romcom.

That typical Candy storyline has been done to death.

Maybe the chaebol wife ran off and the husband "Hires" the jewellry stand owner as a stand-in. After a strange meet-cute.

Because he needs the wife for something and can't admit she's gone until it's over.
