Sung Joon joins Gu Family Book

Sung Joon, now in Gu Family Book?! Finally, I’m feeling the excitement.

Of course, it’s not like I wasn’t interested in this drama already, or that its cast wasn’t solid — it’s got Lee Seung-gi, Suzy, Lee Yeon-hee, Choi Jin-hyuk, Jung Hye-young, and Lee Yubi, among others. But I don’t have a handle on the show itself yet, even with all the castings and plot descriptions — I still don’t know what kind of drama it is, what the tone will be, and whether it’s more likely to make me laugh or cry. Sort of important things to know.

So Sung Joon joins the cast and takes on the role of… Suzy’s bodyguard? That’s it? This had better be the world’s most important bodyguard ever, ‘s all I’m sayin’, Kevin Costner included. I don’t just say this because I’m a big fan of Sung Joon, but because he’s been carving his path as leading man material with his recent projects; he was the heart of Shut Up: Flower Boy Band and the romantic lead of Can We Get Married, so it seems odd for him to then step back and play a bodyguard. An assistant. A mere helper. His role had better be HUGE. (That’s what she said.)

Suzy’s character is plenty well-versed in the martial arts herself and an expert archer, while her father is a former soldier and now serves as martial arts master, so I wonder at her needing a bodyguard in the first place. He also happens to be nursing a one-sided love for her — sadness! I’m a sucker for this kind of drama relationship with the quiet protector loving the heroine from right by her side, all silent and unseen. Sung Joon also serves as our half-gumiho hero’s (Lee Seung-gi) steadfast assistant and has a bickering relationship with him (cute)… though I suppose things might get a little complicated once Seung-gi and Suzy fall for each other.

Otani Ryohei (The Chaser, Soulmate) is another late addition to the cast, playing a character merely described as “top ninja.” Hottest ninja ever.

Gu Family Book premieres on April 1.

I completely agree!! I was interested in this drama, but now I'm SOLD!!! Heart Sung Joon :D Plus his storyline reminds me of Gaksital's lovelorn bodyguard, which was one of my favs from that drama (though I miss it all so much!!). Can't wait for April 1st!!

One of my biggest draw to the show was that the heroine was supposed to be a warrior, which translates to kickass in my book. So why the heck does she have a bodyguard? WHAT KIND OF WARRIOR HAS A BODYGUARD!? This is just TELLING US that the "female warrior" of the show will be weak and dependent on the guys of the show.
On the other hand, Sung Joon.....

Yeah, Yoo Yeon Seok plays his rival and brother of his first love who grew up with Kang Chi and now hates him. It might be an ensemble cast, but I'm having a hard time figuring out the bodyguard's (that Yeo Ul shouldn't even need) relevance to the plot other than to awkwardly listen to her complain about Kang Chi.

why a girl that can kick anyone's ass needs a bodyguard? O__o anywaaayys... I've read awesome things about sung joon so I guess he would be great!! I hope there's bromance included!! I had my fair amount of beautiful bromance with my biases Seung Gi and Jung Suk -OHH MY EUN SHI KYUNG~~ :'(- and I hope there's bromance here too :33

Oh man oh man now Sung Joon? Great beans! I loved that guy since the terrible Lie to Me and further enjoyed him in SUFBB. Looking even more forward to Gu Family Book (although the extra large cast has me worried about how everything's going to be resolved).

I wasn't paying attention to this drama so far but now that Sung Joon is part of it, I will definitely wait for this one.

I'm still in search for my drama crack for the first half of 2013 and maybe this will be it along with Jang Ok Jung... sageuk!!!! bring back my drama mojo!

I'm confused here because while I love Sung Joon's recent dramas, he isn't that great but everyone talks like he's at Won Bin level. Tbh, I think he won't have much airtime because he's not even lead, just supporting role, I checked the cast, they have some big name like Lee Sung Jae, Yoo Dong Geun, Jo Sung Ha, in official website, those three are even listed before the second lead are Yoo Yeon Seok and Lee Yoo Bi, so I guess romance is not the main story in here, better prepare yourself before watching this drama. I hope there aren't many complaints when it won't turn out the way you want.

To all Sung Joon fans, please be prepared for the following:
1) He is NOT the lead and definitely will not have that much screen time.
2) He will DEFINITELY NOT have the girl, because he's NOT the lead. You can ship him with the leading lady all u want, but we all know what the final outcome will be...

With this in mind, if you STILL want to watch the drama, it will be at your own disappointment. But pls don't tear down or underestimate the lead actor just because you're disappointed and please don't overestimate your idol just because you want him in a bigger role. It's really annoying to make comments like, "oh I prefer him wt Suzy", "why can't he be the lead?" etc.
My advice is DON"T watch the drama. Why subject yourself to such unattainable desires? And spoil it for those of us who like the leads? When I was watching BOF, and realised that the second lead was not ever going to get the girl, I stopped watching it even though I like KHJ. Didn't want to waste my time.
Instead you should just re-watch all his other dramas where he did get the girl and where he had more air time!

This drama is about the journey of the hero and all the characters so far revolves around him - His parents, his first love, his new love, his mentor, his side-kick man, his assistant etc.

There's nothing wrong with liking the other characters more than the lead, but please know the reality. I wish we won't hear such comments like 'Why is he only appearing mere seconds in each episode?!"

Yes, the cast is big but they all have one thing in common in Kang Chi. Either knowing his dad or helping him now. There isn't going to be any main character the story revolves around but him. The summary tells you as much... I think hot daddy and main bad guy will probably play a bigger role than either of the supposed 2nd/3rd leads. Hopefully more than Suzy too tbh...

I so agree with you, Crazyajummafan ! This drama the lead is LEE SEUNG GI !!!!, not Sung Joon. Is that too hard to understand ??. Please don't make silly comments like "why can't he be the lead ?" He's NOT !! Sorry, to burst your bubble, but he was not offered the lead role !

Yay Sung Joon!

I planned to watch at least the first few episodes of this show just for Lee Seung-gi, but I might have forgotten about it. Sung Joon makes it better! Now I will definitely check it out. I've seen every single drama Sung Joon has ever been in, and with the exception of Lie to Me, he played interesting/captivating characters. Okay, even in Lie to Me I liked him at first.

I don't know what the hype is all about when Sung Joon joined Gu, because I clearly haven't watched any drama wherein he partakes an important/lead role, but all I can say is that they DO look better together than Seung Gi and Suzy. I just don't see Seung Gi and Suzy happening, you know? They're basically brother and sister to me. But who knows, maybe the production can change that. They have a knack for changing our opinions to better fit their drama.

I'm watching it for Seung Gi, basically because I've watched all of his dramas and loved him in them.

Either way, I can't wait for this to air!
