Update: Screencaps, recaps, and Joo-won

What a morning. So stuff happened. There was a lot of emotion. And we here at Dramabeans realized once again what an awesomely supportive and fiercely loyal readership we have. We love you. ♥ Really, it was surprising and touching to see how much people care about this site and what we do. We wouldn’t be here without you.

Here’s what happened: Sites that infringe on material covered by Dramafever’s licensing agreements have been shut down in the past. The company that Dramafever hired to handle these cases saw that we covered a show they licensed. They filed the DMCA notice with our webhost, who warned us to delete or be shut down. We deleted (and replaced with lovely stick figures. You’re welcome).

We have spoken with reps from Dramafever, who have issued their official statement. They retracted the DMCA notice and have informed us we can resume screencapping. We’re a little gun-shy about that at the moment (hence the stick figures. You’re welcome), but will try easing back into normal operating procedure and bringing back the pretty.

We have to admit that the recent shakeups in the drama fan community have us uneasy, from streaming site and torrent crackdowns to fan recap sites being taken offline, and we’re not quite sure how the landscape may change in the future. We’re grateful to still be here, and we’re committed to sticking around, even if that requires evolving with the shifting sands (and maybe learning how to draw better stick figures). So thank you again for all the love and support, which is what keeps us going. Y’all rock.

-javabeans and girlfriday

We will support this amazing site to the end!... If we have to stick with drawings lets do it! :) ... Who knows this can be an opportunity. Having recaps with sketches would all more funny to the bloomy :D ... So, Im all for what you guys have to give us. It would be a shame that they wont let you recap if they do in the future... :( ... That would be the worst thing happening.. Let's hope for the best and cheers to creativity! <3

It's nice to see you guys are taking the high road, but I can no longer support DramaFever. They're bullies.

was not on your site for 2 days and all this drama happens?

I think we get enough drama IN the drama itself without this added one, thanks very much.
I've noticed so many sites have been shut down and if there are any problems with this site, I don't know what I'd do.

I might just take a full sabbatical from k-dramas like I did a few years ago (which lasted 2 years).

All that said, I love the stick figures. That should become a permanent addition to the recaps. I LOVE THIS SITE AND I LOVE YOU GUYS!
(thought I'd voice my support too <3)

Don't they get it . It the episode recaps, summary and discussion that helps the non understanding make sense of the dramas that they sell, market and benefit from. So to crack down on images/using scenes from drama it's kind of like cutting of your foot to heal your cut in the hand. They should thanks the recap/drama sites that translate because it keeps interest in the dramas that they will benefit from.

I hope your going to continue. Truly your site is a treasure and a habit the I don't want to get cured from.

I haven't even been following Level 7 Civil Servant (I might start reading the recaps just for the great stick figures though) but just wanted to say that this site is my drama crack and I'd be going into UNIMAGINABLE severe withdrawal symptoms without it. :D Thanks for all your great work and effort JB and GF and keep it up! Hwaiting!!

OK - people need to give Dramafever a break here.

As stated, Dramafever has an outside firm that they hired to police the net for the dramas they license.

That firm noticed that Dramabeans was covering one or more dramas and filed a DMCA notice (the people over at Dramafever probably had no idea about this).

Once JB/GF spoke to the people over at Dramafever - they rescinded the DMCA notice and gave Dramabeans the go-ahead to continue as usual.

Now, if Dramafever had not rescinded the DMCA, it would be a whole 'nother story (would've been really stupid on their part since a site like Dramabeans only INCREASES interest in K-dramas and Dramabeans doesn't stream K-dramas, legally or illegally - so not really competition for Dramafever).

I have no issue w/ Dramafever and am glad that they exist so that I can watch K-dramas from the comfort of my coach (wish they had more K-films).

I like Viki as well (actually like Viki's subs a little better since they tend to be more precise and not "dumbed down" for an audience that isn't familiar with Korean cultural idiosyncrasies.

But yeah, if Dramabeans had been prevented from doing its normal activities, there would have been hell to pay.

Its so annoying that dramafever has the license for this when sites like kimchi and viki were doing a WAYYYY better job :( I really hope DB wouldn't be the next one taken off or i think my Kdrama addiction will really just die off. as a fan whose not in the US, i cannot even use DF or viki, which is why sites like mysoju and kimchidramas were such precious finds :( Without them, i have yet to find a comparable subbing site to enjoy watching my dramas hence, the drastic lack of drama watching in the past few months :(

ohwell i hope everything blows over soon, ALL THE WAY DB AND GF, LOVE YALL <333333 LOVE YOUR STICKFIGURES TOO ^.^

Thank goodness that the whole fiasco ends quickly.

When I read about the earlier news last nite (I'm from the other time zone), I was shocked and worried if things gone haywire.... what would it mean for the future recaps for other shows as well? where would I be able to get my kdrama fix? where to find you guys again?

Like many have said, dramabeans is not just an ordinary recap blog. It's a place where a community of like-minded kdrama-goers share their loves, their views on not only about the drama itself but its extension behind each drama (the cultures, values and beliefs as compared to our real life where everyone of us are from different parts of the world).

I have only come to realise how much I love DB and value their recaps and fellow beanies' comments when I started watching "Hundred Years Inheritance". I've been so used to watching a drama and follow up with each episode by reading DB's recaps and others' comments, that something felt amiss with "Hundred Years". I've tried to search for other blogs for recap but theirs are not as insightful as I used to enjoy for other dramas. (Disclaimer: I may not agree with all DB's comments but I appreciate their views all the same and enjoy them as much.)

Hence, I'm so glad that All is Well. :)

Copying from Kae-qeum of FBND:
"I'm sorry that I only found you two years ago. Thank you for your wonderful recaps and comments. Dramabeans, I love you."

Thank god, that seemed like a rather silly reason to file a complaint, you guys are only providing summaries and a few screencaps. Those pictures don't really make up for a drama episode, even if they are well chosen as episode milestones. As for the recap reading experience, we don't always have the time to check out the first few episodes of every potentially good drama. Your recaps encourage so many viewers to start watching a drama and then a forum for them to discuss ensuing episodes.

And what would we do if Dramabeans suddenly disappeared? :(

As for DF... I like that they provide subs with speed, faster than some other subbers. And some of their videos are in far better quality than, say, some of those subbed youtube videos. The reason why I haven't been going to their site lately is out of convenience, I found some other site that also provides fast subs or I can't get past their 2 minute commercials. It's not a place either where I have to go just for a show they have exclusive rights to (not very into L7CS or Iris 2). I'm not up to date with how they've been pulling the plug on other sites, though I don't like the sound of it, but besides that it by itself has fallen out of my go-to place for dramas anymore.

Another thing is that sometimes when viewing an episode again (just rewatching for fun, especially during that AM1997 obsession) with chinese subs elsewhere (they had HQ videos), or with other subs, I feel that they leave out subtle nuances in the dialogue, and diction is rather important in conveying the point. I do understand that some things get lost in translation, even other subbing projects such as some in Viki. (I used to avoid it years ago since I was displeased with the shoddy grammar in some projects, but some other projects have changed my mind with really excellent subbing teams, even if it takes time to produce quality subs. It really depends on the team.) Since I typically only watch videos with fast subs releases on DF, I understand that fast releases may not mean the best translation quality, but I do hope they do go back and edit those in the future for best viewing experience.

Okay so I read DB everyday I might not comment as often but I visit this site religiously, so when I read about the DramaFever hullabaloo I went directly to their facebook and wrote a classy letter letting them know that I am not happy with what they are doing. No trashy talk just a classy letter befitting a member of the DB family cannot let my girlfriends and boy friends down lol! Then back to DB where I read that DF has retracted, still I'm glad that I gave my 2 cents on DF's actions. I think its so grossly unfair that MySoju and KimchiDrama have been taken down by one Company when these sites has given them the fanbase to actually exist. Crazy world, my drama watching has significantly decreased this last few months maybe it's the crazy job but I'm not in the mood to watch dramas right now but I'll always be in the mood to read recaps because they are just that awesome. Love you Javabeans, Girlfriday, Kaedejun, gummimochi and HeadsNo2. Life may suck sometimes but there's always DB to cheer me up.

I came across this site about two years ago and since then I've found that I just love coming here to get K-drama news even if there aren't any dramas I'm interesting in watching at that time. I just really love the witty, professional atmosphere that all the bloggers on this site provide for the K-drama fanbase.

So thanks for keeping up this website for so long and know that I will continue to come here and support it. At the very least, I can't seem to muster up the same persistence in blogging about any kind of Asian drama myself. My own site has been untouched for too long already...

Hi Javabeans and Girlfriend -

I'm getting this news late as there's been drama in my life.

CRAY CRAY as my silly graduate school friends would say. My heart dropped reading it so I'm sure yours must've taken a huge dive.

Legal people leave the drama lovers alone! It's cool though that DF took the time to work things out with you, but I can understand the hesitancy...eeeks!

Fighting ladies of dramaland!
