Answer Me 1997’s sequel courts parents for a reunion

Cable darling Answer Me 1997′s sequel project is finally starting to cast, and first up are the roles of Mom and Dad: Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa are being courted to return to the franchise and steer a brand new family through the murky waters of adolescence. I normally never get excited about who gets cast as parents in a drama, but these two were pitch-perfect and such a huge part of what made 1997 so great.

The follow-up drama will be set in 1994, with a focus on the basketball craze of the era. It’s being called both Answer Me 1994 and Basketball Extravaganza, but either way it’ll have a similar setup with a family and a bustling cast of youngsters at the core. 1994’s idol du jour is of course Seo Taiji, and in keeping with the Answer Me tradition, pop fandom will play a big part. Now if they could get him to cameo, that’d be something.

Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa really played the full gamut in 1997, from slapstick to raw emotion and heart, and had some of the best chemistry among all the characters on the show. I’m a little scared that no set of characters will top their 1997 couple, and I don’t want anything to sully the memory of that. But I do trust these writers and this pair of actors, so I’m mostly excited for the reunion and more unforgettable hijinks from Mom and Dad in 1994 if they sign on.

Answer Me 1994, Basketballopalooza, or whatever it’s called, is gearing up for a September premiere on tvN.

Awww...I love these parents. But I'd want them to have the same type of relationship. I don't want them to ruin the great memories of mom and dad.

Wait, are they going to be in the same roles or something else? Because if it's someone else I don't know how I feel about that.

I kind of already see them as the 97 Mom and Dad so to see them in a completely different role might feel weird.

I believe it's different roles.

While I loved them in AM97, I dunno how I'd feel them playing the different types of parents in AM94. I might compare them too much to their roles in AM97.

Still, can't wait for AM94. I'm not that worried about the basketball craze, but then I'm a guy, so I guess I can relate better to that than, say, fashion....

I think its undeniable we will compare, we also normally compare an actor/actress's previous role to their current role. Same with them doing variety and suddenly doing dramas and we still have their variety character in mind.

However with them 2 veterans I am very sure they will create something new to surprise viewers.

They're bringing the parents back they're bringing the rents back! It will be difficult for it to be as epic as girlfriday said vs the last cast, but now at least there's hope. (The whole bball theme is making me nervous...)

But they were so great. They made me laugh out loud and even cry every time they came on the screen. Even snatching screen time moments from the idol stars sometimes.

I think they are actually one of my favorite Kdrama couples of all time, and definitely my favorite parents. If they come back again, there is no way I won't watch this. I believe in their and the writer's ability to make it work to have the same actors doing a different set of parents.

Same here! I don't want Mom and Dad mk. II, but I trust that they'll still be good and that the writing will do them justice.

1997 spoilers**

But if these parents are back, who would be the kids? Cos we know that one of them has a tragic end..........

I doubt they're going to cast Yewon in the main role.

well, that tragic end happened in 1992 so that's not an issue with casting for the kid in question.

People have to understand they'll play new characters and it won't have SIG, Hoya and Eunji in this version.

I can't wait to be honest, and I'm sure this version will be dabaek since I heard the writer had this story/version on her mind before changing it to Answer 1997.

They were totally awesome...I just worry about rehashing stuff. I know they'll be different characters with different stories...it just might be hard for me to not see them as Siwon's parents in a similar style drama setting :/

Joonie appa! <3 Sung Dong Il really is one of my favorite characters in Reply 1997. I got a kick out of him constantly calling Tony oppa "monkey" and cried a river when Dad was admitted to the hospital. I also loved how Mom loved Joon Hee as a future son-in-law without knowing the truth about him. I know Seo Taiji is a bit reclusive, but they have to have a cameo in the sequel, like Tony did in the original. If not Seo Taiji, then perhaps one of the Boys, maybe YG?

While I loved the parents and much of the cast of AM1997 did a real good job acting-wise, SDI stole every scene he was in (along with Shin So Yool).

Awww, I am so onboard this train. I recently saw the old manhwa Slam Dunk in the Korean bookstore and it reminded me about this season's(?) direction for the show. Hmm... Seo Taiji. Was a pretty BFD in the K-popscape so I understand the need to include that piece of K-pop history but it's gonna be hard to see him in the drama other than through old clips.

But personally I was a big R.ef fan back then and Solid and some of those members are still in the entertainment biz. I was also gonna suggest Roo'ra but there's no way I would want to see Go Young Wook but my fave member was Chae Ri Na anyways. Although I wouldn't able to point her out to you these days because I don't recognize her without the spray tan.

So, it's going to be like the "Vacation" franchise where the parents are the same but the kids are different.

That last photo brought tears to my eyes *sniff, sniff*.

I'm so looking forward to these two again (also, Seo Taeji's cameo). Hopefully, 1994 would be as good as (or even better than) 1997.

Yay! I love them in AM97 (I speak in the present tense because I'm still trying to finish watching the series online).

However, I do get people's misgivings about them parenting a different family this time around. Hopefully, they and the writers will give us another set of Mom and Dad characters to adore :)

Sung Dong Il! Whatever my ultimate ahjusshi crush does, I'm onboard! I've watched him in a lot of dramas and I have to say he was at his best in Reply 1997. I'm currently watching him on Jang Ok Jung and Dad Where are you going?, but it will be nice to see him again in all his comedy glory when September comes. I really hope this is going to push through! Please, dramagods!

Thanks for the news, gf!

hmmm . . . not sure how i feel about this. on one hand, it could be great. they were both quite awesome in answer me 1997, and are just generally great actors. on the other hand, it could be difficult to separate them from the characters in answer me 1997 and ruin it for me in bball-1994-palooza. guess we'll just have to wait and see.

i'm still stuck on the basketball theme . . . it does not sound that interesting to me, but at the same time i can acknowledge it could be great depending on how it's done. this team did a superb job with the original so perhaps i should let go of my apprehension. idk.

I'm curious what specifically about the basketball craze are people concerned about.

For example, I'm not a kpop fangirl or really been around kpop fangirls, but I still totally enjoyed AM97.

My impression is that it might be like AM97 but slightly in reverse with AM94. And there was some basketball craze thrown into AM97, though it never really factored too much into the story.

I am so excited. I have been rewatching Answer Me 1997 countless times and recently watched it again coz I have been watching too much Dad, Where are we going?

Joonie's appa is strict but loving. Meanwhile Shiwon's appa is loud and well just like her daughter. They both loves fiercely just like how Shiwon is devoted to her Tony oppa... Appa did her homework but then doesn't think twice to cut her hair or call her Tony oppa monkey to drive some sense into her...

Love Shiwon omma too... She whom cook heaps of foods... wonder if it will be a running gag again.

So Answer Me 1994? Bring it on. Am sure the parents are going to bring something fabulous into the show.

Love this couple. One of my fav plots in Answer Me 1997 was the one where the dad fell sick, and to cut the long story short, the mum pestered a scriptwriter to change the drama ending to give him and the other patients hope. That was awesome!
