Kim Myung-min eyes based-on-a-true-story film Himalaya

Kim Myung-min, aka the Method Actor To Rule Them All, is thisclose to signing on to a new movie project titled Himalaya. (As usual, he is “positively considering” and “nothing is finalized yet” but there are enough reports to make it sound very likely.)

The project comes from JK Film, and is based on the true story of mountain-climber Uhm Hong-gil, who participated in a 2005 expedition to climb Mount Everest. During the climb his teammate and hoobae, Park Mu-taek, perished in an accident; the film will follow our main character as he risks his life to bring his teammate’s body back. Oh man, I’m blinking back tears already. Auggggh. These stories totally get to me, and I can already see Kim Myung-min bringing such intensity to the role.

But Kim’s awesomeness aside, who else immediately thought with some concern that he would be off ravaging his body in preparation for the role? You just know he’s going to insist on climbing freaking Everest himself, for realism and kicks and giggles. I feel like even if producers wanted to fake the whole mountain thing, he’d insist on packing up for Nepal anyway. I worry about this man’s health, I do. His well-documented devotion to his roles is something I both admire and find unnerving.

Himalaya plans to begin filming in September.

The amazing Kim Myung-min. This is the kind of movie I want to watch in the theatre even if I have to take a box of tissue. Love the story, a man with a heart as big as Mount Everest.

Javabeans, I thought the same exact thing. This guy is definitely going to climb Mount Everest himself and I am going to freak the hell out!!!

Love this guy, seriously I do, but I really hope they restrain him from doing such a dangerous thing (even though there's tiny part in me that also wants to see it happen with him alive and well....because that would actually be so badass).

Does he risk for the dead or still alive friend? Or he's not sure? Because risking has to have some sense too.

Not sure in this case (don't know the story) but in bringing back his friend he would be risking his own life, no matter if the friend is already dead or not. Climbing Everest can dangerous as hell, and if you die on the mountain you often gets left where you die, because of the risks involved for the live people in bringing down the body.

Known there have been planes for bringing down dead bodies off of the mountain, but it is a dangerous operation and could very well end up in more accidents and deaths.

That's why I thought that for the dead it's better to be left on a mountain. After all, the Himalayas are sacred.

KYAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! Kim Myung-min? YES. I'm a newly fan of his because of King Of Dramas. And I've been on a quest for this past dramas. I did however discover his movie" Closer To Heaven" and I must say I cried a RIVER!! This guy is Good at Every role he gets his hands on. So I can definitly agree that he will bring much intensity to the role. I also must get a LOL out there. Hahahaha Yes he's a actor that will do every and anything to bring a scripted character to life and that's what I repect about him. He's in the same class as Kim Sun Ah that gain/loss weight for a drama/movie.

I know how you feel. I too came to find his awesomeness in KoD and have been looking all over for his past works and googling about him. What a truly great actor and human being!

For those who are looking for oldie-but-goodie KMM dramas, I highly, highly recommend More Beautiful Than A Flower (gooddrama dotnet has it if you can't find it elsewhere). It's a Noh Hee Kyung drama from 2004, and not only is it my favorite KMM drama, it's one of my favorite dramas, period. Warning: your heart will ache intensely for him. But IMHO, it's a must-see for KMM fans. (As well as for fans of poignant dramas.)

And yes, I agree- he's not just a superb actor, he seems to be a wonderful human being as well.

Another thumbs up for Bad Family. Funny and heartwarming drama!

Also, I really hope KMM doesn't decide to climb Everest. It's no joke whatsoever, but he should definitely try climbing something safer as it's an experience in itself and will give him perspective on what a climber has to do to make it up to a mountain like Everest. Sadly, I don't know how much time he would have to do this as the preparations for even a much safer climb would take quite a while.

Best of luck, Kim Myung-Min and most importantly, stay safe!

I had become an avid fan of him since KoD too and since then, I've been looking into all his dramas. I already watched Bad Family (what a funny gangster, heh). The other dramas revolve around settings/occupations that don't really interest me at all. But this one looks very interesting in wiki so I'll definitely give it a try. Thanks a lot.

I actually started watching him in The Immortal Lee Soon Shin. God. He was amazing in that sageuk. When that sageuk first came out, it was like a revelation. Now a days sageuks have gotten much better in complexity and quality, but it's a classic.

I watched all 104 episodes and I'm convinced that no one else could play this historical figure like KMM so I'm not that excited about the upcoming remake. I love Uhm Tae Woong but KMM's Lee Soon Shin will be hard to top.

Mr. Kim? What are you doing? MR. KIM! STAHP!

I can just see him rolling in snow till his skin gets burned from the cold. I can see him eating canned soup alone, for months, to prepare for it. I can see him drinking his own...

Ok, seriously now, someone place a guardian beside him until this is finished. As his fan, I really can't take anymore of this self-abuse. I really hope he's now aware that a body can only take so much, especially as you age. He has a wife and kids. As important as "realism" is, health and sanity should come first.

I was making angry comments on "the other site" at the ridiculata of PSH fans and then I refreshed DB page and saw the nice smiley wholesome picture of my favorite K-actor so I let out a huge squuueeeee in the office. Then I read on and let out some lunch over my keyboard when i read "You just know he’s going to insist on climbing freaking Everest himself" :-)
You are the best, DB and KMM! I love you guys with all my heart (or wait, that sounds just like those PSH fans. Ahh, what the heck)...

I'd hate to initiate a thread with all the PSH debate here at DB (I totally understand and truly appreciate the fact that DB has stayed away from all the PSH stuff). But you know sometimes it's hard not to be rubbernecking so I was checking out updates on Koala's Playground and Parksihoo4u (the latter only to get some updates as it's so blatantly biased).

I personally appreciate the fact that DB avoided talking about PSH's case ..that was smart of them imo because this website is foremost here to provide recaps, drama news, reviews to dramagoers not scandals. I respect koala's blog and visit it from time to time but I think it was a bad decision of her to even talk about it...each time there's an update on the case, it stirred a lot of hatred, people are insulting each other, it has really become insane over there. PSH fans are going through harsh times these days and instead of being understanding towards them, we condemn them/bring them down...that's not nice at all. That's why I prefer avoid the topics related to this case altogether. We don't know what happened this particular night and we may never know. I like Park Si Hoo as an actor, he's talented. I do believe he made a mistake (that could cost his career indeed) but I sincerely think that everyone involved in this case is at fault. That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it.

*sigh*, although I am a fan of PSH and i got a little bit pissed when I got cut out immediately after I posted a seemingly (I thought) unbiased scientific answer to a question/comment at a site. I won't comment anymore about who was right and who was wrong, because clearly nobody will know about the truth except the persons involved. All I can say is that the media has been less than kind to both (all) parties and also the police did a pretty bad job of damage control IMHO.

Anyway, i was holding out to see whether DB would post anything about PSH and frankly now that I am so glad that they had the wisdom not to. Not to say that KP was wrong or anything (i love KP and her posts), people commenting there are usually less biased and have less hate than some other sites.

"All I can say is that the media has been less than kind to both (all) parties and also the police did a pretty bad job of damage control IMHO."

THIS. Exactly my thoughts. This case has been handled very badly from the start...Frankly speaking, I feel sorry for both parties.

0

LOL! I admire your courage AnotherFan. I never commented on PSH's case before and refrained from saying anything. But in the end I did and guess what, the insults start flying my way and directed towards Kang Ji Hwan nonetheless tsk tsk... I'm beyond speechless.

DB makes a good decision in not writing anything about it. It's not healthy for one's mental health reading those thing write by his fans.

Pipit, what his fans write or what you see his fans write is may not reflect the whole situation, some of his fans are probably very rational and mature but their voices drowned out by all the PSH mega fans or haters. it's becoming extraordinarily unhealthy nowadays.

Likewise for A.

I hope no mortality will come out of this in the end.

In 2011, KBS broadcasted a documentary special on this expedition to bring the body of Mr. Park. Here's the documentary posted on YouKu. No Eng sub. Interestingly, there was another expedition to bring down another Korean mountaineer who died on a separate expeidtion. In that case, they weren't able to bring the body down due to the dangers and reburied him on a rocky slope facing east, towards Korea. In that case, they brought the family to the base camp for a make shift memorial service.
